    Beschreibung: This paper presents the design of NaviPBx, an ultrasound-navigated prostate cancer biopsy system. NaviPBx is designed to support an affordable and sustainable national healthcare program in Senegal. It uses spatiotemporal navigation and multiparametric transrectal ultrasound to guide biopsies. NaviPBx integrates concepts and methods that have been independently validated previously in clinical feasibility studies and deploys them together in a practical prostate cancer biopsy system. NaviPBx is based entirely on free open-source software and will be shared as a free open-source program with no restriction on its use. NaviPBx is set to be deployed and sustained nationwide through the Senegalese Military Health Service. This paper reports on the results of the design process of NaviPBx. Our approach concentrates on “frugal technology”, intended to be affordable for low–middle income (LMIC) countries. Our project promises the wide-scale application of prostate biopsy and will foster time-efficient development and programmatic implementation of ultrasound-guided diagnostic and therapeutic interventions in Senegal and beyond.

    Beschreibung: Traditional research methods in software defect prediction use part of the data in the same project to train the defect prediction model and predict the defect label of the remaining part of the data. However, in the practical realm of software development, the software project that needs to be predicted is generally a brand new software project, and there is not enough labeled data to build a defect prediction model; therefore, traditional methods are no longer applicable. Cross-project defect prediction uses the labeled data of the same type of project similar to the target project to build the defect prediction model, so as to solve the problem of data loss in traditional methods. However, the difference in data distribution between the same type of project and the target project reduces the performance of defect prediction. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a cross-project defect prediction method based on manifold feature transformation. This method transforms the original feature space of the project into a manifold space, then reduces the difference in data distribution of the transformed source project and the transformed target project in the manifold space, and finally uses the transformed source project to train a naive Bayes prediction model with better performance. A comparative experiment was carried out using the Relink dataset and the AEEEM dataset. The experimental results show that compared with the benchmark method and several cross-project defect prediction methods, the proposed method effectively reduces the difference in data distribution between the source project and the target project, and obtains a higher F1 value, which is an indicator commonly used to measure the performance of the two-class model.

    Beschreibung: This paper combines the interval analysis tools with the nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC). The NMPC strategy is formulated based on an uncertain dynamic model expressed as nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODEs). All the dynamic parameters are identified in a guaranteed way considering the various uncertainties on the embedded sensors and the system’s design. The NMPC problem is solved at each time step using validated simulation and interval analysis methods to compute the optimal and safe control inputs over a finite prediction horizon. This approach considers several constraints which are crucial for the system’s safety and stability, namely the state and the control limits. The proposed controller consists of two steps: filtering and branching procedures enabling to find the input intervals that fulfill the state constraints and ensure the convergence to the reference set. Then, the optimization procedure allows for computing the optimal and punctual control input that must be sent to the system’s actuators for the pendulum stabilization. The validated NMPC capabilities are illustrated through several simulations under the DynIbex library and experiments using an inverted pendulum.

    Beschreibung: Al2O3 and Al2O3-ZrO2 coatings were deposited on stainless steel using atmospheric plasma spraying. The influence of arc current and zirconia addition on the surface morphology of the coating, phase composition and tribological properties under dry sliding conditions were investigated. The addition of zirconia reduced the surface roughness of the coatings. The X-ray diffraction measurements indicated that the Al2O3 coatings were composed of β-Al2O3, α-Al2O3, and γ-Al2O3 phases. The addition of zirconia led to the formation of tetragonal and monoclinic phases of zirconia in the as-sprayed coatings. The friction coefficients of Al2O3 and Al2O3-ZrO2 coatings were similar and varied in the range of 0.72–0.75. The specific wear rates of the as-sprayed coatings were reduced with the increase of arc current. It was obtained that the wear rates of the Al2O3-ZrO2 coatings were at least three times lower compared to Al2O3 coatings.

    Beschreibung: This paper reveals the relationship between the Miller plateau voltage and the displacement currents through the gate–drain capacitance (CGD) and the drain–source capacitance (CDS) in the switching process of a power transistor. The corrected turn-on Miller plateau voltage and turn-off Miller plateau voltage are different even with a constant current load. Using the proposed new Miller plateau, the turn-on and turn-off sequences can be more accurately analyzed, and the switching power loss can be more accurately predicted accordingly. Switching loss models based on the new Miller plateau have also been proposed. The experimental test result of the power MOSFET (NCE2030K) verified the relationship between the Miller plateau voltage and the displacement currents through CGD and CDS. A carefully designed verification test bench featuring a power MOSFET written in Verilog-A proved the prediction accuracy of the switching waveform and switching loss with the new proposed Miller plateau. The average relative error of the loss model using the new plateau is reduced to 1/2∼1/4 of the average relative error of the loss model using the old plateau; the proposed loss model using the new plateau, which also takes the gate current’s variation into account, further reduces the error to around 5%.

    Beschreibung: The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) defines six levels of driving automation, ranging from Level 0 to Level 5. Automated driving systems perform entire dynamic driving tasks for Levels 3–5 automated vehicles. Delegating dynamic driving tasks from driver to automated driving systems can eliminate crashes attributed to driver errors. Sharing status, sharing intent, seeking agreement, or sharing prescriptive information between road users and vehicles dedicated to automated driving systems can further enhance dynamic driving task performance, safety, and traffic operations. Extensive simulation is required to reduce operating costs and achieve an acceptable risk level before testing cooperative automated driving systems in laboratory environments, test tracks, or public roads. Cooperative automated driving systems can be simulated using a vehicle dynamics simulation tool (e.g., CarMaker and CarSim) or a traffic microsimulation tool (e.g., Vissim and Aimsun). Vehicle dynamics simulation tools are mainly used for verification and validation purposes on a small scale, while traffic microsimulation tools are mainly used for verification purposes on a large scale. Vehicle dynamics simulation tools can simulate longitudinal, lateral, and vertical dynamics for only a few vehicles in each scenario (e.g., up to ten vehicles in CarMaker and up to twenty vehicles in CarSim). Conventional traffic microsimulation tools can simulate vehicle-following, lane-changing, and gap-acceptance behaviors for many vehicles in each scenario without simulating vehicle powertrain. Vehicle dynamics simulation tools are more compute-intensive but more accurate than traffic microsimulation tools. Due to software architecture or computing power limitations, simplifying assumptions underlying convectional traffic microsimulation tools may have been a necessary compromise long ago. There is, therefore, a need for a simulation tool to optimize computational complexity and accuracy to simulate many vehicles in each scenario with reasonable accuracy. This research proposes a traffic microsimulation tool that employs a simplified vehicle powertrain model and a model-based fault detection method to simulate many vehicles with reasonable accuracy at each simulation time step under noise and unknown inputs. Our traffic microsimulation tool considers driver characteristics, vehicle model, grade, pavement conditions, operating mode, vehicle-to-vehicle communication vulnerabilities, and traffic conditions to estimate longitudinal control variables with reasonable accuracy at each simulation time step for many conventional vehicles, vehicles dedicated to automated driving systems, and vehicles equipped with cooperative automated driving systems. Proposed vehicle-following model and longitudinal control functions are verified for fourteen vehicle models, operating in manual, automated, and cooperative automated modes over two driving schedules under three malicious fault magnitudes on transmitted accelerations.

    Beschreibung: In machine learning and data science, feature selection is considered as a crucial step of data preprocessing. When we directly apply the raw data for classification or clustering purposes, sometimes we observe that the learning algorithms do not perform well. One possible reason for this is the presence of redundant, noisy, and non-informative features or attributes in the datasets. Hence, feature selection methods are used to identify the subset of relevant features that can maximize the model performance. Moreover, due to reduction in feature dimension, both training time and storage required by the model can be reduced as well. In this paper, we present a tri-stage wrapper-filter-based feature selection framework for the purpose of medical report-based disease detection. In the first stage, an ensemble was formed by four filter methods—Mutual Information, ReliefF, Chi Square, and Xvariance—and then each feature from the union set was assessed by three classification algorithms—support vector machine, naïve Bayes, and k-nearest neighbors—and an average accuracy was calculated. The features with higher accuracy were selected to obtain a preliminary subset of optimal features. In the second stage, Pearson correlation was used to discard highly correlated features. In these two stages, XGBoost classification algorithm was applied to obtain the most contributing features that, in turn, provide the best optimal subset. Then, in the final stage, we fed the obtained feature subset to a meta-heuristic algorithm, called whale optimization algorithm, in order to further reduce the feature set and to achieve higher accuracy. We evaluated the proposed feature selection framework on four publicly available disease datasets taken from the UCI machine learning repository, namely, arrhythmia, leukemia, DLBCL, and prostate cancer. Our obtained results confirm that the proposed method can perform better than many state-of-the-art methods and can detect important features as well. Less features ensure less medical tests for correct diagnosis, thus saving both time and cost.

    Beschreibung: With the rapid development of deep learning, computer vision has assisted in solving a variety of problems in engineering construction. However, very few computer vision-based approaches have been proposed on work productivity’s evaluation. Therefore, taking a super high-rise project as a research case, using the detected object information obtained by a deep learning algorithm, a computer vision-based method for evaluating the productivity of assembling reinforcement is proposed. Firstly, a detector that can accurately distinguish various entities related to assembling reinforcement based on CenterNet is established. DLA34 is selected as the backbone. The mAP reaches 0.9682, and the speed of detecting a single image can be as low as 0.076 s. Secondly, the trained detector is used to detect the video frames, and images with detected boxes and documents with coordinates can be obtained. The position relationship between the detected work objects and detected workers is used to determine how many workers (N) have participated in the task. The time (T) to perform the process can be obtained from the change of coordinates of the work object. Finally, the productivity is evaluated according to N and T. The authors use four actual construction videos for validation, and the results show that the productivity evaluation is generally consistent with the actual conditions. The contribution of this research to construction management is twofold: On the one hand, without affecting the normal behavior of workers, a connection between construction individuals and work object is established, and the work productivity evaluation is realized. On the other hand, the proposed method has a positive effect on improving the efficiency of construction management.

    Beschreibung: Creating a widely excepted model on the measure of intelligence became inevitable due to the existence of an abundance of different intelligent systems. Measuring intelligence would provide feedback for the developers and ultimately lead us to create better artificial systems. In the present paper, we show a solution where learning as a process is examined, aiming to detect pre-written solutions and separate them from the knowledge acquired by the system. In our approach, we examine image recognition software by executing different transformations on objects and detect if the software was resilient to it. A system with the required intelligence is supposed to become resilient to the transformation after experiencing it several times. The method is successfully tested on a simple neural network, which is not able to learn most of the transformations examined. The method can be applied to any image recognition software to test its abstraction capabilities.

    Beschreibung: In this work, a single-layer TiO2–ZrO2 thin film is deposited on the AISI 316L austenitic stainless steel by the sol–gel process and the dip coating method to improve its corrosion resistance properties. For the sol preparation, titanium isopropoxide and zirconium butoxide are used as the precursors, yttrium acetate hydrate is used for the ZrO2 stabilization, i-propanol as the solvent, nitric acid as the catalyst, acetylacetone as the chelating agent, and the distilled water for the hydrolysis. The deposited films are annealed at 400 °C or 600 °C. Morphology and phase composition of the sol–gel TiO2–ZrO2 films and powders are analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped with EDX detector and X-ray diffraction (XRD), respectively. The thickness of the sol–gel TiO2–ZrO2 films deposited on the stainless steel is determined by glow discharge optical emission spectrometry (GD-OES). The corrosion behavior of the stainless steel, coated by amorphous films, is evaluated in 3 wt% NaCl and 0.5 mol dm−3 HCl by potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) techniques. It is found that the sol–gel TiO2–ZrO2 films with the amorphous structure, deposited by the sol–gel process, and calcined at 400 °C significantly enhance the corrosion properties of AISI 316L in both chloride media.

    Beschreibung: Physical inactivity increases the risk of many adverse health conditions, including the world’s major non-communicable diseases, such as coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and breast and colon cancers, shortening life expectancy. There are minimal medical care and personal trainers’ methods to monitor a patient’s actual physical activity types. To improve activity monitoring, we propose an artificial-intelligence-based approach to classify physical movement activity patterns. In more detail, we employ two deep learning (DL) methods, namely a deep feed-forward neural network (DNN) and a deep recurrent neural network (RNN) for this purpose. We evaluate the two models on two physical movement datasets collected from several volunteers who carried tri-axial accelerometer sensors. The first dataset is from the UCI machine learning repository, which contains 14 different activities-of-daily-life (ADL) and is collected from 16 volunteers who carried a single wrist-worn tri-axial accelerometer. The second dataset includes ten other ADLs and is gathered from eight volunteers who placed the sensors on their hips. Our experiment results show that the RNN model provides accurate performance compared to the state-of-the-art methods in classifying the fundamental movement patterns with an overall accuracy of 84.89% and an overall F1-score of 82.56%. The results indicate that our method provides the medical doctors and trainers a promising way to track and understand a patient’s physical activities precisely for better treatment.

    Beschreibung: TiAlN coatings with different Al ratios were deposited by the cathodic arc ion plating (AIP) method, and the relationship between solid particle erosion resistance and structural, mechanical properties was investigated by a micro slurry-jet erosion (MSE) test. The crystal structure of TiAlN coating changes depending on the Al ratio. The coating shows a B1 single cubic phase between the Al ratio of 0 and 0.58; above this ratio, formation of a B4 hexagonal phase is observed. The mechanical properties such as hardness and Young’s modulus of the TiAlN coating also depend on the Al ratio and the crystal structure. The erosion rate decreases by increasing the Al ratio up to 0.58, as the coating is a cubic single phase. The TiAlN coating shows the lowest erosion rate at an Al ratio of 0.58. The erosion rate increases drastically as the crystalline phase changes from the B1 cubic to B4 hexagonal phase at the Al ratio of more than 0.58. The change in erosion rate is also discussed in connection with mechanical properties such as erodent particle hardness to coating hardness ratio and coating hardness to Young’s modulus ratio.

    Beschreibung: Single image super-resolution task aims to reconstruct a high-resolution image from a low-resolution image. Recently, it has been shown that by using deep image prior (DIP), a single neural network is sufficient to capture low-level image statistics using only a single image without data-driven training such that it can be used for various image restoration problems. However, super-resolution tasks are difficult to perform with DIP when the target image is noisy. The super-resolved image becomes noisy because the reconstruction loss of DIP does not consider the noise in the target image. Furthermore, when the target image contains noise, the optimization process of DIP becomes unstable and sensitive to noise. In this paper, we propose a noise-robust and stable framework based on DIP. To this end, we propose a noise-estimation method using the generative adversarial network (GAN) and self-supervision loss (SSL). We show that a generator of DIP can learn the distribution of noise in the target image with the proposed framework. Moreover, we argue that the optimization process of DIP is stabilized when the proposed self-supervision loss is incorporated. The experiments show that the proposed method quantitatively and qualitatively outperforms existing single image super-resolution methods for noisy images.

    Beschreibung: The characteristics of bridge pile-group foundation have a significant influence on the dynamic performance of the superstructure. Most of the existing analysis methods for the pile-group foundation impedance take the trait of strong specialty, which cannot be generalized in practical projects. Therefore, a project-oriented numerical solution algorithm is proposed to compute the dynamic impedance of bridge pile-group foundation. Based on the theory of viscous-spring artificial boundary, the derivation and solution of the impedance function are transferred to numerical modeling and harmonic analysis, which can be carried out through the finite element method. By taking a typical pile-group foundation as a case study, the results based on the algorithm are compared with those from existing literature. Moreover, an impact experiment of a real pile-group foundation was implemented, the results of which are also compared with those resulting from the proposed numerical algorithm. Both comparisons show that the proposed numerical algorithm satisfies engineering precision, thus showing good effectiveness in application.

    Beschreibung: Medical image analysis research requires medical image datasets. Nevertheless, due to various impediments, researchers have been described as “data starved”. We hypothesize that implicit evolving community standards require researchers to use ever-growing datasets. In Phase I of this research, we scanned the MICCAI (Medical Image Computing and Computer-Assisted Intervention) conference proceedings from 2011 to 2018. We identified 907 papers involving human MRI, CT or fMRI datasets and extracted their sizes. The median dataset size had grown by 3–10 times from 2011 to 2018, depending on imaging modality. Statistical analysis revealed exponential growth of the geometric mean dataset size with an annual growth of 21% for MRI, 24% for CT and 31% for fMRI. Thereupon, we had issued a forecast for dataset sizes in MICCAI 2019 well before the conference. In Phase II of this research, we examined the MICCAI 2019 proceedings and analyzed 308 relevant papers. The MICCAI 2019 statistics compare well with the forecast. The revised annual growth rates of the geometric mean dataset size are 27% for MRI, 30% for CT and 32% for fMRI. We predict the respective dataset sizes in the MICCAI 2020 conference (that we have not yet analyzed) and the future MICCAI 2021 conference.

    Beschreibung: Soil stabilization, through either physical or chemical techniques of coating-cementation development, is a commonly adopted practice in geotechnical and transportation engineering projects used to strengthen soils and mitigate negative geo-environmental impacts. This can be particularly important in enhancing the mechanical properties of soils which are prone to degradation of their response because of freezing and thawing actions. It was attempted in this research study to examine the effect of lime–zeolite stabilization on the behavior of a silt-sized natural soil of low plasticity, by performing standard compaction tests as well as unconfined compressive experiments evaluating the strength of the composite samples. The natural soil mixed with various contents of lime and zeolite partial replacement was subjected to consecutive freezing and thawing cycles. The results from the study showed significant improvement of the mechanical performance of the treated soil when mixed with lime partially replaced with zeolite in terms of strength and durability and, based on scanning electron microscopic images, additional insights were attempted to be obtained on the microstructure of the specimens subjected to temperature changes.

    Beschreibung: Low pressure fluid transport (1) applications often require low and precise volumetric flow rates (2) including low leakage to reduce additional costly and complex sensors. A peristaltic pump design (3) was realized, with the fluid’s flexible transport channel formed by a solid cavity and a wobbling plate comprising a rigid and a soft layer (4). In operation, the wobbling plate is driven externally by an electric motor, hence, the soft layer is contracted and unloaded (5) during pump-cycles transporting fluid from low to high pressure sides. A thorough characterization of the pump system is required to design and dimension the components of the peristaltic pump. To capture all these parameters and their dependencies on various operation-states, often complex and long-lasting dynamic 3D FE-simulations are required. We present, here, a holistic design methodology (6) including analytical as well as numerical calculations, and experimental validations for a peristaltic pump with certain specifications of flow-rate range, maximum pressures, and temperatures. An experimental material selection process is established and material data of candidate materials (7) (liquid silicone rubber, acrylonitrile rubber, thermoplastic-elastomer) are directly applied to predict the required drive torque. For the prediction, a semi-physical, analytical model was derived and validated by characterizing the pump prototype.

    Beschreibung: Many smart city and society applications such as smart health (elderly care, medical applications), smart surveillance, sports, and robotics require the recognition of user activities, an important class of problems known as human activity recognition (HAR). Several issues have hindered progress in HAR research, particularly due to the emergence of fog and edge computing, which brings many new opportunities (a low latency, dynamic and real-time decision making, etc.) but comes with its challenges. This paper focuses on addressing two important research gaps in HAR research: (i) improving the HAR prediction accuracy and (ii) managing the frequent changes in the environment and data related to user activities. To address this, we propose an HAR method based on Soft-Voting and Self-Learning (SVSL). SVSL uses two strategies. First, to enhance accuracy, it combines the capabilities of Deep Learning (DL), Generalized Linear Model (GLM), Random Forest (RF), and AdaBoost classifiers using soft-voting. Second, to classify the most challenging data instances, the SVSL method is equipped with a self-training mechanism that generates training data and retrains itself. We investigate the performance of our proposed SVSL method using two publicly available datasets on six human activities related to lying, sitting, and walking positions. The first dataset consists of 562 features and the second dataset consists of five features. The data are collected using the accelerometer and gyroscope smartphone sensors. The results show that the proposed method provides 6.26%, 1.75%, 1.51%, and 4.40% better prediction accuracy (average over the two datasets) compared to GLM, DL, RF, and AdaBoost, respectively. We also analyze and compare the class-wise performance of the SVSL methods with that of DL, GLM, RF, and AdaBoost.

    Beschreibung: Biomaterial surface modification represents an important approach to obtain a better integration of the material in surrounding tissues. Different techniques are focused on improving cell support as well as avoiding efficiently the development of infections, such as by modifying the biomaterial surface with amine groups (–NH2). Previous studies showed that –NH2 groups could promote cell adhesion and proliferation. Moreover, these chemical functionalities may be used to facilitate the attachment of molecules such as proteins or to endow antimicrobial properties. This mini-review gives an overview of different techniques which have been used to obtain amine-rich coatings such as plasma methods and adsorption of biomolecules. In fact, different plasma treatment methods are commonly used with ammonia gas or by polymerization of precursors such as allylamine, as well as coatings of proteins (for example, collagen) or polymers containing –NH2 groups (for example, polyethyleneimine). Moreover, this mini-review will present the methods used to characterize such coatings and, in particular, quantify the –NH2 groups present on the surface by using dyes or chemical derivatization methods.

    Beschreibung: The aim of this research project is to analyze support panels that are based on aramid fabrics which are reinforced with polybenzoxazine/urethane (poly(BA-a/PU)) composites and contain multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). Through the measurement of mechanical properties and a series of ballistic-impact tests that used 7.62 × 51 mm2 projectiles (National Institute of Justice (NIJ), level III), the incorporated MWCNTs were found to enhance the energy-absorption (EAbs) property of the composites, improve ballistic performance, and reduce damage. The perforation process and the ballistic limit (V50) of the composite were also studied via numerical simulation, and the calculated damage patterns were correlated with the experimental results. The result indicated hard armor based on polybenzoxazine nanocomposites could completely protect the perforation of a 7.62 × 51 mm2 projectile at impact velocity range of 847 ± 9.1 m/s. The results revealed the potential for using the poly(BA-a/PU) nanocomposites as energy-absorption panels for hard armor.

    Beschreibung: The SARS-CoV-2 virus has spread worldwide, and the World Health Organization has declared COVID-19 pandemic, proclaiming that the entire world must overcome it together. The chest X-ray and computed tomography datasets of individuals with COVID-19 remain limited, which can cause lower performance of deep learning model. In this study, we developed a model for the diagnosis of COVID-19 by solving the classification problem using a self-supervised learning technique with a convolution attention module. Self-supervised learning using a U-shaped convolutional neural network model combined with a convolution block attention module (CBAM) using over 100,000 chest X-Ray images with structure similarity (SSIM) index captures image representations extremely well. The system we proposed consists of fine-tuning the weights of the encoder after a self-supervised learning pretext task, interpreting the chest X-ray representation in the encoder using convolutional layers, and diagnosing the chest X-ray image as the classification model. Additionally, considering the CBAM further improves the averaged accuracy of 98.6%, thereby outperforming the baseline model (97.8%) by 0.8%. The proposed model classifies the three classes of normal, pneumonia, and COVID-19 extremely accurately, along with other metrics such as specificity and sensitivity that are similar to accuracy. The average area under the curve (AUC) is 0.994 in the COVID-19 class, indicating that our proposed model exhibits outstanding classification performance.

    Beschreibung: Defective hard candies are usually produced due to inadequate feeding or insufficient cooling during the candy production process. The human-based inspection strategy needs to be brought up to date with the rapid developments in the confectionery industry. In this paper, a detection and classification method for defective hard candies based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs) is proposed. First, the threshold_li method is used to distinguish between hard candy and background. Second, a segmentation algorithm based on concave point detection and ellipse fitting is used to split the adhesive hard candies. Finally, a classification model based on CNNs is constructed for defective hard candies. According to the types of defective hard candies, 2552 hard candies samples were collected; 70% were used for model training, 15% were used for validation, and 15% were used for testing. Defective hard candy classification models based on CNNs (Alexnet, Googlenet, VGG16, Resnet-18, Resnet34, Resnet50, MobileNetV2, and MnasNet0_5) were constructed and tested. The results show that the classification performances of these deep learning models are similar except MnasNet0_5 with the classification accuracy of 84.28%, and the Resnet50-based classification model is the best (98.71%). This research has certain theoretical reference significance for the intelligent classification of granular products.

    Beschreibung: In this study, a femtosecond laser was used to pretreat the surface of the Al–Li alloy, the surface micromorphology, roughness, contact angle, and surface wettability of which were adjusted by changing the laser scanning speed, and the sample was bonded into a single joint with polyether ether ketone (PEEK) adhesive. The mechanism of the laser surface treatment affecting the bonding strength of the Al–Li alloy was explored through tensile and shear experiments. The results indicated that optimizing the laser surface treatment parameters could change the surface roughness and surface micromorphology of the Al–Li alloy, so as to change its surface free energy and bonding strength. Compared with the untreated sample, the bonding strength of the Al–Li alloy increased by 81%, 95%, 107%, 91%, and 78% under the treatment of laser scanning at 25, 20, 15, 10, and 5 mm/s, respectively. As a whole, femtosecond laser etching of the Al–Li alloy surface had an important influence on its wettability and bonding performance.

    Beschreibung: Visual Question Generation (VQG) from images is a rising research topic in both fields of natural language processing and computer vision. Although there are some recent efforts towards generating questions from images in the open domain, the VQG task in the medical domain has not been well-studied so far due to the lack of labeled data. In this paper, we introduce a goal-driven VQG approach for radiology images called VQGRaD that generates questions targeting specific image aspects such as modality and abnormality. In particular, we study generating natural language questions based on the visual content of the image and on additional information such as the image caption and the question category. VQGRaD encodes the dense vectors of different inputs into two latent spaces, which allows generating, for a specific question category, relevant questions about the images, with or without their captions. We also explore the impact of domain knowledge incorporation (e.g., medical entities and semantic types) and data augmentation techniques on visual question generation in the medical domain. Experiments performed on the VQA-RAD dataset of clinical visual questions showed that VQGRaD achieves 61.86% BLEU score and outperforms strong baselines. We also performed a blinded human evaluation of the grammaticality, fluency, and relevance of the generated questions. The human evaluation demonstrated the better quality of VQGRaD outputs and showed that incorporating medical entities improves the quality of the generated questions. Using the test data and evaluation process of the ImageCLEF 2020 VQA-Med challenge, we found that relying on the proposed data augmentation technique to generate new training samples by applying different kinds of transformations, can mitigate the lack of data, avoid overfitting, and bring a substantial improvement in medical VQG.

    Beschreibung: Handover usually deals with the mobility of the end users in a mobile network to assure about the ongoing session of a user. It is observed that frequent handover results in call dropping due to latency. In order to overcome this issue, a fuzzy based handover decision scheme for mobile devices using a predictive model is proposed. First, an MFNN (Multi-layer Feed Forward Network) is used to determine the next cell of the user along with best hand off time. To obtain the best access network, multiple-attribute Access Network Selection Function (ANSF) is used. The fuzzy rule is applied by considering the parameter data rate, reliability, signal strength, battery power and mobility as input and the output obtained is the optimal network. The proposed scheme selects the best access network and enhances the quality of services.

    Beschreibung: In this paper, we construct novel numerical algorithms to solve the heat or diffusion equation. We start with 105 different leapfrog-hopscotch algorithm combinations and narrow this selection down to five during subsequent tests. We demonstrate the performance of these top five methods in the case of large systems with random parameters and discontinuous initial conditions, by comparing them with other methods. We verify the methods by reproducing an analytical solution using a non-equidistant mesh. Then, we construct a new nontrivial analytical solution containing the Kummer functions for the heat equation with time-dependent coefficients, and also reproduce this solution. The new methods are then applied to the nonlinear Fisher equation. Finally, we analytically prove that the order of accuracy of the methods is two, and present evidence that they are unconditionally stable.

    Beschreibung: IP fragmentation is still prevalent on the Internet. Defragmented traffic is a prerequisite for many network processing algorithms. This work focuses on the size and organization of a flow table, which is an essential ingredient of the hardware IP defragmentation block. Previous research suggests that fragmented IP traffic is highly local, and a relatively small flow table (on the order of a thousand entries) can process most of the traffic. Samples of IP traffic were obtained from public data sources and used for a statistical analysis, revealing the key factors in achieving design goals. The findings were backed by an extensive design space exploration of the software defragmentation model, which resulted in the efficiency estimates. To provide a robust score of the simulation model, a new validation technique is employed that helps to overcome the limitations of the samples.

    Beschreibung: The use of gradient descent training to optimize the performance of a rule-fact network expert system via updating the network’s rule weightings was previously demonstrated. Along with this, four training techniques were proposed: two used a single path for optimization and two use multiple paths. The performance of the single path techniques was previously evaluated under a variety of experimental conditions. The multiple path techniques, when compared, outperformed the single path ones; however, these techniques were not evaluated with different network types, training velocities or training levels. This paper considers the multi-path techniques under a similar variety of experimental conditions to the prior assessment of the single-path techniques and demonstrates their effectiveness under multiple operating conditions.

    Beschreibung: This study evaluates the effects of gelatin coating enriched with ethanolic propolis extract (PE) at 1%, 2% or 3% (w/v) on the quality parameters of pork meat during storage at 2 °C. Physical (pH, weight loss, color) and chemical parameters (percentage contents of metmyoglobin (MetMb), along with thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS)) were measured, and microbiological (total aerobic plate count (TAPC)) analysis, as well as consumer evaluation, was carried out every four days during the storage period of twelve days. The results indicated that the proposed treatments affected (p 〈 0.05) the quality characteristics of meat samples. The high prevention of physicochemical alterations and maximum inhibition of microorganisms was obtained for samples stored in gelatin coatings containing 2% and 3% PE. Additionally, despite a slight deterioration in odor on Day 4 in the P3 group, no negative changes in overall acceptability of the P2 and P3 groups compared to uncoated samples were observed. The obtained results indicate a significant role of propolis extract incorporation into gelatin packaging to extend the shelf life of stored pork.

    Beschreibung: Organic–inorganic nanoparticles, which can improve and modify the mechanical and chemical properties of polymers, have been used as fillers to prepare high-performance hybrid nanocomposite membranes. In this study, we explored whether the incorporation of organic nanofillers (graphene (G), graphene oxide (GO), carbon nanotubes (CNTs), or oxidized carbon nanotubes (CNTOxi)) into polysulfone (PSF) and montmorillonite (MMt)-modified PSF membranes could enhance membrane performance for the removal of heavy metal ions from contaminated solutions. These hybrid membranes were prepared by a phase inversion method using chloroform as the solvent. The surface morphologies of the membranes revealed good dispersibility of the organoclay and carbon nanomaterials in the PSF matrix. The hybrid nanocomposite membranes showed significantly improved thermal stability and mechanical properties as compared to the pristine PSF and PSF/MMt membranes. The adsorption efficiencies of these hybrid adsorptive membranes for Hg(II), Pb(II), Sr(II), Fe(III), Zn(II), Ni(II), Al(III), Co(II), Y(III), and Cr(III) were investigated. The PSF/MMt/CNTOxi and PSF/MMt/GO membranes exhibited the highest adsorption efficiencies. In particular, these adsorptive membranes showed selectivity toward Hg(II), and the Hg(II) extraction percentage was maximized at pH 2. The maximum Hg(II) adsorption capacities of PSF/MMt/CNTOxi and PSF/MMt/GO were 151.36 and 144.89 mg/g, respectively, and the adsorption isotherm was in approval with the Langmuir model. These hybrid nanocomposites can be used in water purification application.

    Beschreibung: The computing resources of today’s smartphones are underutilized most of the time. Using these resources could be highly beneficial in edge computing and fog computing contexts, for example, to support urban services for citizens. However, new challenges, especially regarding job scheduling, arise. Smartphones may form ad hoc networks, but individual devices highly differ in computational capabilities and (tolerable) energy usage. We take into account these particularities to validate a task execution scheme that relies on the computing power that clusters of mobile devices could provide. In this paper, we expand the study of several practical heuristics for job scheduling including execution scenarios with state-of-the-art smartphones. With the results of new simulated scenarios, we confirm previous findings and better comprehend the baseline approaches already proposed for the problem. This study also sheds some light on the capabilities of small-sized clusters comprising mid-range and low-end smartphones when the objective is to achieve real-time stream processing using Tensorflow object recognition models as edge jobs. Ultimately, we strive for industry applications to improve task scheduling for dew computing contexts. Heuristics such as ours plus supporting dew middleware could improve citizen participation by allowing a much wider use of dew computing resources, especially in urban contexts in order to help build smart cities.

    Beschreibung: The intricate nature of congenital heart disease requires understanding of the complex, patient-specific three-dimensional dynamic anatomy of the heart, from imaging data such as three-dimensional echocardiography for successful outcomes from surgical and interventional procedures. Conventional clinical systems use flat screens, and therefore, display remains two-dimensional, which undermines the full understanding of the three-dimensional dynamic data. Additionally, the control of three-dimensional visualisation with two-dimensional tools is often difficult, so used only by imaging specialists. In this paper, we describe a virtual reality system for immersive surgery planning using dynamic three-dimensional echocardiography, which enables fast prototyping for visualisation such as volume rendering, multiplanar reformatting, flow visualisation and advanced interaction such as three-dimensional cropping, windowing, measurement, haptic feedback, automatic image orientation and multiuser interactions. The available features were evaluated by imaging and nonimaging clinicians, showing that the virtual reality system can help improve the understanding and communication of three-dimensional echocardiography imaging and potentially benefit congenital heart disease treatment.

    Beschreibung: Friction nonlinear disturbance is one of the main factors affecting the control performance of servo tracking system. In this paper, an improved Active Disturbance Rejection Control (ADRC) scheme of dual-axis servo turntable is researched to achieve accurate tracking. Firstly, the mathematical dynamics model of dual-axis servo tracking turntable system is established. The Elastoplastic model is used to describe nonlinear friction, in which the immeasurable part is extended to be a new state. Secondly, considering the smooth and monotonic increasing property of hyperbolic tangent function, an improved tracking differentiator is introduced, which can provide better noise attenuation performance. Thirdly, based on adjustable parameter systematic pole placement method, the fuzzy control algorithm is applied to realize the intelligent tuning of the improved Extended State Observer (ESO) gains, in which the input of the fuzzy controller is the estimation error, while the output is the observer bandwidth. Finally, the improved ADRC system is transformed into a Lurie system, then the extended circle criteria are adopted to analyze the absolute stability of the proposed system. Simulation and experimental verification of the improved ADRC method for the dual-axis turntable tracking servo system are conducted. Results illustrate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed controller.

    Beschreibung: Conventionally, public key certificates bind one subject with one static public key so that the subject can facilitate the services of the public key infrastructure (PKI). In PKI, certificates need to be renewed (or revoked) for several practical reasons, including certificate expiration, private key breaches, condition changes, and possible risk reduction. The certificate renewal process is very costly, especially for those environments where online authorities are not available or the connection is not reliable. A dynamic public key certificate (DPKC) facilitates the dynamic changeover of the current public–private key pairs without renewing the certificate authority (CA). This paper extends the previous study in several aspects: (1) we formally define the DPKC; (2) we formally define the security properties; (3) we propose another implementation of the Krawczyk–Rabin chameleon-hash-based DPKC; (4) we propose two variants of DPKC, using the Ateniese–Medeiros key-exposure-free chameleon hash; (5) we detail two application scenarios.

    Beschreibung: In modulation identification issues, like in any other classification problem, the performance of the classification task is significantly impacted by the feature characteristics. Feature weighting boosts the performance of machine learning algorithms, particularly the class of instance-based learning algorithms such as the Minimum Distance (MD) classifier, in which the distance measure is highly sensitive to the magnitude of features. In this paper, we propose an improved version of the Salp Swarm optimization Algorithm (SSA), called ISSA, that will be applied to optimize feature weights for an MD classifier. The aim is to improve the performance of a blind digital modulation detection approach in the context of multiple-antenna systems. The improvements introduced to SSA mainly rely on the opposition-based learning technique. Computer simulations show that the ISSA outperforms the SSA as well as the algorithms that derive from it. The ISSA also exhibits the best performance once it is applied for feature weighting in the above context.

    Beschreibung: The purpose of this study was to investigate the feasibility of a time-of-flight (TOF) brain positron emission tomography (PET) providing high-quality images. It consisted of 30 detector blocks arranged in a ring with a diameter of 257 mm and an axial field of view of 52.2 mm. Each detector block was composed of two detector modules and two application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) chips. The detector module was composed of an 8 × 8 array of 3 × 3 mm2 multi-pixel photon counters and an 8 × 8 array of 3.11 × 3.11 × 15 mm3 lutetium yttrium oxyorthosilicate scintillators. The 64-channel individual readout ASIC was used to acquire the position, energy, and time information of a detected gamma ray. A coincidence timing resolution of 187 ps full width at half maximum (FWHM) was achieved using a pair of channels of two detector modules. The energy resolution and spatial resolution were 6.6 ± 0.6% FWHM (without energy nonlinearity correction) and 2.5 mm FWHM, respectively. The results of this study demonstrate that the developed TOF brain PET could provide excellent performance, allowing for a reduction in radiation dose or scanning time for brain imaging due to improved sensitivity and signal-to-noise ratio.

    Beschreibung: Detecting trace amounts of explosives to ensure personal safety is important, and this is possible by using laser-based spectroscopy techniques. We performed surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) using plasmonic nanogap substrates for the solution phase detection of some nitro-based compounds, taking advantage of the hot spot at the nanogap. An excitation wavelength of 785 nm with an incident power of as low as ≈0.1 mW was used to excite the nanogap substrates. Since both RDX and PETN cannot be dissolved in water, acetone was used as a solvent. TNT was dissolved in water as well as in hexane. The main SERS peaks of TNT, RDX, and PETN were clearly observed down to the order of picomolar concentration. The variations in SERS spectra observed from different explosives can be useful in distinguishing and identifying different nitro-based compounds. This result indicates that our nanogap substrates offer an effective approach for explosives identification.

    Beschreibung: Volatile fatty acids obtained from the fermentation of the organic fraction of municipal solid waste can be used as raw materials for non-toxic ethyl ester (EE) synthesis as well as feedstock for the production of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs). Taking advantage of the concept of an integrated process of a bio-refinery, in the present paper, a systematic investigation on the extraction of intracellular poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate), produced by mixed microbial culture by using EEs was reported. Among the tested EEs, ethyl acetate (EA) was the best solvent, dissolving the copolymer at the lowest temperature. Then, extraction experiments were carried out by EA at different temperatures on two biomass samples containing PHAs with different average molecular weights. The parallel characterization of the extracted and non-extracted PHAs evidenced that at the lower temperature (100 °C) EA solubilizes preferentially the polymer fractions richer in 3HV comonomers and with the lower molecular weight. By increasing the extraction temperature from 100 °C to 125 °C, an increase of recovery from about 50 to 80 wt% and a molecular weight reduction from 48% to 65% was observed. The results highlighted that the extracted polymer purity is always above 90 wt% and that it is possible to choose the proper extraction condition to maximize the recovery yield at the expense of polymer fractionation and degradation at high temperatures or use milder conditions to maintain the original properties of a polymer.

    Beschreibung: During transmission of digital images, secret messages can be embedded using data hiding techniques. Such techniques can transfer private secrets without drawing the attention of eavesdroppers. To reduce the amount of transmitted data, image compression methods are widely applied. Hiding secret data in compressed images is a hot issue recently. In this paper, we apply the de-clustering concept and the indicator-free search-order coding (IFSOC) technique to hide information into vector quantization (VQ) compressed images. Experimental results show that the proposed two-layer reversible data hiding scheme for IFSOC-encoded VQ index table can hide a large amount of secret data among state-of-the-art methods with a relatively lower bit rate and high security.

    Beschreibung: We constructed a capacitively coupled plasma (CCP) source and installed various diagnostic tools to perform process diagnosis using a plasma process gas (CxFy). We obtained the energy and mass distributions of the ions and radicals from Ar, C4F8/Ar, and C4F6/Ar plasmas. The energy distribution of the ions incident on the substrate was controlled using the self-bias voltage, and the ion energy was found to be inversely proportional to the mass. The measured species and density of the ions and radicals can help understand plasma process results as they provide information about the ions and radicals incident on the substrate.

    Beschreibung: In this work, we propose a mechanism for knowledge transfer between Convolutional Neural Networks via the geometric regularization of local features produced by the activations of convolutional layers. We formulate appropriate loss functions, driving a “student” model to adapt such that its local features exhibit similar geometrical characteristics to those of an “instructor” model, at corresponding layers. The investigated functions, inspired by manifold-to-manifold distance measures, are designed to compare the neighboring information inside the feature space of the involved activations without any restrictions in the features’ dimensionality, thus enabling knowledge transfer between different architectures. Experimental evidence demonstrates that the proposed technique is effective in different settings, including knowledge-transfer to smaller models, transfer between different deep architectures and harnessing knowledge from external data, producing models with increased accuracy compared to a typical training. Furthermore, results indicate that the presented method can work synergistically with methods such as knowledge distillation, further increasing the accuracy of the trained models. Finally, experiments on training with limited data show that a combined regularization scheme can achieve the same generalization as a non-regularized training with 50% of the data in the CIFAR-10 classification task.

    Beschreibung: Android apps are daily installed by billions of users worldwide, who grant access to an extensive set of sensitive personal data. Different techniques have been developed over the years to understand how apps protect or harm their users’ privacy. However, these results have been produced in different research domains and addressing privacy from different perspectives, resulting in a growing but scattered body of knowledge. To bridge this gap, we have carried out a systematic mapping study to provide practitioners and researchers with an overview of the state-of-the-art technique, published between 2016 and 2020, to assess privacy in Android apps. In this paper, we highlight the most relevant findings, identify and analyse the most pressing gaps, and discuss the promising research directions.

    Beschreibung: A conventional interdigital bandpass filter (BPF) is characterized by coupled and tapped lines and affords low insertion loss (IL) and easy fractional bandwidth (FBW) adjustment. However, the maximum FBW of the filter is limited to 30%, beyond that, its gap size increases, thereby rendering filter fabrication impractical on a standard printed circuit board. In addition, the filter size cannot be changed because it dictates the operational frequency of the filter. Hence, in this study, we propose a compact interdigital BPF based on a spiral and folded stepped impedance resonator (SIR), which affords low IL and excellent group delay. The spiral, folded structure facilitates drastic FBW adjustment: the center frequency and adjustable range of the FBW of the designed BPF are 800 MHz and 80 to 180%, respectively. Additionally, the proposed BPF can adjust the FBW by k-factor which can adjust from 80 to 180%. The insertion and return losses of the proposed filter are 0.043 dB and 17.1 dB, respectively, and the group delay is 0.098 ns. The total filter size is only 13.8 mm × 5.98 mm, which corresponds to a size reduction by factors of 〉2/8 relative to a conventional filter and 2.1 relative to the latest BPF design. The group delay difference between the BPF and other filters is 0.15 ns. In addition, the range of adjustable FBW for the filter is 1.36 times different than for other filters.

    Beschreibung: A test suite is a set of test cases that evaluate the quality of software. The aim of whole test suite generation is to create test cases with the highest coverage scores possible. This study investigated the efficiency of a multiple-searching genetic algorithm (MSGA) for whole test suite generation. In previous works, the MSGA has been effectively used in multicast routing of a network system and in the generation of test cases on individual coverage criteria for small- to medium-sized programs. The performance of the algorithms varies depending on the problem instances. In this experiment were generated whole test suites for complex programs. The MSGA was expanded in the EvoSuite test generation tool and compared with the available algorithms on EvoSuite in terms of the number of test cases, the number of statements, mutation score, and coverage score. All algorithms were evaluated on 14 problem instances with different corpus to satisfy multiple coverage criteria. The problem instances were Java open-source projects. Findings demonstrate that the MSGA generated test cases reached greater coverage scores and detected a larger number of faults in the test class when compared with the others.

    Beschreibung: This paper presents a dual-mode low-density parity-check (LDPC) decoding architecture that has excellent error-correcting capability and a high parallelism design for fifth-generation (5G) new-radio (NR) applications. We adopted a high parallelism design using a layered decoding schedule to meet the high throughput requirement of 5G NR systems. Although the increase in parallelism can efficiently enhance the throughput, the hardware implementation required to support high parallelism is a significant hardware burden. To efficiently reduce the hardware burden, we used a grouping search rather than a sorter, which was used in the minimum finder with decoding performance loss. Additionally, we proposed a compensation scheme to improve the decoding performance loss by revising the probabilistic second minimum of a grouping search. The post-layout implementation of the proposed dual-mode LDPC decoder is based on the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) 40 nm complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) technology, using a compensation scheme of grouping comparison for 5G communication systems with a working frequency of 294.1 MHz. The decoding throughput achieved was at least 10.86 Gb/s without evaluating early termination, and the decoding power consumption was 313.3 mW.

    Beschreibung: The widespread use of artificial intelligence (AI) in civil engineering has provided civil engineers with various benefits and opportunities, including a rich data collection, sustainable assessment, and productivity. The trend of construction is diverted toward sustainability with the aid of digital technologies. In this regard, this paper presents a systematic literature review (SLR) in order to explore the influence of AI in civil engineering toward sustainable development. In addition, SLR was carried out by using academic publications from Scopus (i.e., 3478 publications). Furthermore, screening is carried out, and eventually, 105 research publications in the field of AI were selected. Keywords were searched through Boolean operation “Artificial Intelligence” OR “Machine intelligence” OR “Machine Learning” OR “Computational intelligence” OR “Computer vision” OR “Expert systems” OR “Neural networks” AND “Civil Engineering” OR “Construction Engineering” OR “Sustainable Development” OR “Sustainability”. According to the findings, it was revealed that the trend of publications received its high intention of researchers in 2020, the most important contribution of publications on AI toward sustainability by the Automation in Construction, the United States has the major influence among all the other countries, the main features of civil engineering toward sustainability are interconnectivity, functionality, unpredictability, and individuality. This research adds to the body of knowledge in civil engineering by visualizing and comprehending trends and patterns, as well as defining major research goals, journals, and countries. In addition, a theoretical framework has been proposed in light of the results for prospective researchers and scholars.

    Beschreibung: Radars with mmWave frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) technology accurately estimate the range and velocity of targets in their field of view (FoV). The targeted angle of arrival (AoA) estimation can be improved by increasing receiving antennas or by using multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO). However, obtaining target features such as target type remains challenging. In this paper, we present a novel target classification method based on machine learning and features extracted from a range fast Fourier transform (FFT) profile by using mmWave FMCW radars operating in the frequency range of 77–81 GHz. The measurements are carried out in a variety of realistic situations, including pedestrian, automotive, and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) (also known as drone). Peak, width, area, variance, and range are collected from range FFT profile peaks and fed into a machine learning model. In order to evaluate the performance, various light weight classification machine learning models such as logistic regression, Naive Bayes, support vector machine (SVM), and lightweight gradient boosting machine (GBM) are used. We demonstrate our findings by using outdoor measurements and achieve a classification accuracy of 95.6% by using LightGBM. The proposed method will be extremely useful in a wide range of applications, including cost-effective and dependable ground station traffic management and control systems for autonomous operations, and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS). The presented classification technique extends the potential of mmWave FMCW radar beyond the detection of range, velocity, and AoA to classification. mmWave FMCW radars will be more robust in computer vision, visual perception, and fully autonomous ground control and traffic management cyber-physical systems as a result of the added new feature.

    Beschreibung: Rayleigh waves are very useful for ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation of structural and mechanical components. Nonlinear Rayleigh waves have unique sensitivity to the early stages of material degradation because material nonlinearity causes distortion of the waveforms. The self-interaction of a sinusoidal waveform causes second harmonic generation, while the mutual interaction of waves creates disturbances at the sum and difference frequencies that can potentially be detected with minimal interaction with the nonlinearities in the sensing system. While the effect of surface roughness on attenuation and dispersion is well documented, its effects on the nonlinear aspects of Rayleigh wave propagation have not been investigated. Therefore, Rayleigh waves are sent along aluminum surfaces having small, but different, surface roughness values. The relative nonlinearity parameter increased significantly with surface roughness (average asperity heights 0.027–3.992 μm and Rayleigh wavelengths 0.29–1.9 mm). The relative nonlinearity parameter should be decreased by the presence of attenuation, but here it actually increased with roughness (which increases the attenuation). Thus, an attenuation-based correction was unsuccessful. Since the distortion from material nonlinearity and surface roughness occur over the same surface, it is necessary to make material nonlinearity measurements over surfaces having the same roughness or in the future develop a quantitative understanding of the roughness effect on wave distortion.

    Beschreibung: Genetic algorithms (GA’s) are mostly used as an offline optimisation method to discover a suitable solution to a complex problem prior to implementation. In this paper, we present a different application in which a GA is used to progressively adapt the collective performance of an ad hoc collection of devices that are being integrated post-deployment. Adaptive behaviour in the context of this article refers to two dynamic aspects of the problem: (a) the availability of individual devices as well as the objective functions for the performance of the entire population. We illustrate this concept in a video surveillance scenario in which already installed cameras are being retrofitted with networking capabilities to form a coherent closed-circuit television (CCTV) system. We show that this can be conceived as a multi-objective optimisation problem which can be solved at run-time, with the added benefit that solutions can be refined or modified in response to changing priorities or even unpredictable events such as faults. We present results of a detailed simulation study, the implications of which are being discussed from both a theoretical and practical viewpoint (trade-off between saving computational resources and surveillance coverage).

    Beschreibung: Plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) has attracted increasing attention since the transportation industry adopts more lightweight metal components and requires an improved version of anodizing for surface protection. In response to the demand, researchers enrich the technical connotation of PEO through diversifying the growth paths and adopting new precursors. Foreign electrolyte additives, involving ceramic and polymeric particles, organic dye emulsions, are incorporated to accomplish various goals. On the other hand, significant progress has been made on comprehension of softening sparks; denoting the adverse trend of growing discharge intensity can be re-routed by involving cathodic current. I–V response shows the cathodic pulse current not only cools down the ensuing anodic pulse, but also twists the coating conductivity, and the residuals of twists accumulate over a long time frame, plausibly through oxide protonation. Thus, the cathodic current provides a tool to control the discharge intensity via integration of the coating conductivity deviations. So far, these cathodic current studies have been performed in the electrolytes of KOH and Na2SiO3. When exotic additives are included, for example Cr2O3, the cathodic current effect is also shifted, as manifested in remarkable changes in its current–voltage (I–V) behavior. We anticipate the future study on cathodic current influences of inclusion shall lead to a precise control of micro arc.

    Beschreibung: Within the context of structure deterioration studies, we propose a new numerical method based on the use of fragility curves. In particular, the present work aims to theoretically study the degradation of concrete bridge structures subjected to aggressive environments. A simple probabilistic method based on fragility curves is presented which allows the forecasting of the lifetime of the considered structural system and the best monitoring time. The method was applied to investigate the degradation of a concrete bridge used as a case study. A Monte Carlo numerical procedure was used to simulate the variation over time of the residual resistant section and the ultimate bending moment of the deck of the case study. Within this context, fragility curves are used as reliable indicators of possible monitoring scenarios. In comparison with other methods, the main advantage of the proposed approach is the small amount of computing time required to obtain rapid assessment of reliability and deterioration level of the considered structure.

    Beschreibung: In this study, nanosecond-pulse laser is used in combination with cold spraying to form a hybrid solid-state forming technology: nanosecond-pulse laser assisted cold spraying. This method successfully manufactured Al-Cu high-strength aluminum alloy coatings. The nanosecond-pulse laser reduced the porosity of the coatings. The laser-induced micro-texture on the substrate surface had the ability of improving the bonding strength of the coating-substrate interface. The bonding strength was closely related to the depth of the micro-texture. The deeper micro-texture caused an unfused interface on the bottom of the texture, which produced voids and reduced the bonding strength. The nanosecond-pulse lasers can also increase the hardness of the coatings. The assistance of the nanosecond-pulse laser has proved to be an effective method to improve the quality of cold sprayed metal coatings.

    Beschreibung: Greywater has been identified as a valuable alternative water source over recent years. Few practices (i.e., recycling and reuse) of greywater have attracted global attention in meeting the future water demand. However, essential parameters should be analyzed for reliable reuse and treatment. The present study addresses the possibilities of the alternative source with the treated greywater. Gravity—governed flow methods through a column containing gravel, sand, and activated carbon was applied. The quality of treated greywater from the university campus, which included physical, chemical, and biological parameters, was assessed to check non-potable reuse suitability. The reduction percentage of organics in biological oxygen demand and chemical oxygen demand was 64% and 42%, respectively. Similarly, the reduction percentage was obtained at 74% and 66% for turbidity and electrical conductivity. The removal efficiency was 57%, 77%, 48%, and 44% for total dissolved solids, alkalinity, chlorides, and total hardness. The pH of treated water samples was found in the neutral range suggesting its suitability for reuse. Hence, the proposed greywater treatment method is a cost-effective and straightforward approach to reuse greywater for irrigation, watering the lawns, and car washing. The greywater collected can be disinfected immediately and reused with minimal possibility of regrowth of microorganisms.

    Beschreibung: This paper proposes a novel coordinated multi-agent deep reinforcement learning (MADRL) algorithm for energy sharing among multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in order to conduct big-data processing in a distributed manner. For realizing UAV-assisted aerial surveillance or flexible mobile cellular services, robust wireless charging mechanisms are essential for delivering energy sources from charging towers (i.e., charging infrastructure) to their associated UAVs for seamless operations of autonomous UAVs in the sky. In order to actively and intelligently manage the energy resources in charging towers, a MADRL-based coordinated energy management system is desired and proposed for energy resource sharing among charging towers. When the required energy for charging UAVs is not enough in charging towers, the energy purchase from utility company (i.e., energy source provider in local energy market) is desired, which takes high costs. Therefore, the main objective of our proposed coordinated MADRL-based energy sharing learning algorithm is minimizing energy purchase from external utility companies to minimize system-operational costs. Finally, our performance evaluation results verify that the proposed coordinated MADRL-based algorithm achieves desired performance improvements.

    Beschreibung: A quad-port antenna array operating in 3.5 GHz band (3.4–3.6 GHz) and 5 GHz band (4.8–5 GHz) for fifth-generation (5G) smartphone applications is presented in this paper. The single antenna element consists of an L-shaped strip, a parasitic rectangle strip, and a modified Z-shaped strip. To reserve space for 2G/3G/4G antennas, the quad-port antenna array is printed along the two long frames of the smartphone. The evolution design and the analysis of the optimal parameters of a single antenna element are derived to investigate the principle of the antenna. The prototype of the presented antenna is tested and the measured results agree well with the simulation. The measured total efficiency is better than 70% and the isolation is larger than 16.5 dB.

    Beschreibung: Using automotive smartphone applications (apps) provided by car manufacturers may offer numerous advantages to the vehicle owner, including improved safety, fuel efficiency, anytime monitoring of vehicle data, and timely over-the-air delivery of software updates. On the other hand, the continuous tracking of the vehicle data by such apps may also pose a risk to the car owner, if, say, sensitive pieces of information are leaked to third parties or the app is vulnerable to attacks. This work contributes the first to our knowledge full-fledged security assessment of all the official single-vehicle management apps offered by major car manufacturers who operate in Europe. The apps are scrutinised statically with the purpose of not only identifying surfeits, say, in terms of the permissions requested, but also from a vulnerability assessment viewpoint. On top of that, we run each app to identify possible weak security practices in the owner-to-app registration process. The results reveal a multitude of issues, ranging from an over-claim of sensitive permissions and the use of possibly privacy-invasive API calls, to numerous potentially exploitable CWE and CVE-identified weaknesses and vulnerabilities, the, in some cases, excessive employment of third-party trackers, and a number of other flaws related to the use of third-party software libraries, unsanitised input, and weak user password policies, to mention just a few.

    Beschreibung: Collision between rigid three-dimensional objects is a very common modelling problem in a wide spectrum of scientific disciplines, including Computer Science and Physics. It spans from realistic animation of polyhedral shapes for computer vision to the description of thermodynamic and dynamic properties in simple and complex fluids. For instance, colloidal particles of especially exotic shapes are commonly modelled as hard-core objects, whose collision test is key to correctly determine their phase and aggregation behaviour. In this work, we propose the Oriented Cuboid Sphere Intersection (OCSI) algorithm to detect collisions between prolate or oblate cuboids and spheres. We investigate OCSI’s performance by bench-marking it against a number of algorithms commonly employed in computer graphics and colloidal science: Quick Rejection First (QRI), Quick Rejection Intertwined (QRF) and a vectorized version of the OBB-sphere collision detection algorithm that explicitly uses SIMD Streaming Extension (SSE) intrinsics, here referred to as SSE-intr. We observed that QRI and QRF significantly depend on the specific cuboid anisotropy and sphere radius, while SSE-intr and OCSI maintain their speed independently of the objects’ geometry. While OCSI and SSE-intr, both based on SIMD parallelization, show excellent and very similar performance, the former provides a more accessible coding and user-friendly implementation as it exploits OpenMP directives for automatic vectorization.

    Beschreibung: This study aimed to measure and compare the shear bond strength (SBS) of a self-adhering flowable resin composite to dentin with a conventional flowable composite, and evaluate the various modes of failure. Thirty human premolar teeth (n = 30) were randomly allocated to two groups (Group I: Vertise™ Flow; Group II: Filtek Ultimate + Single Bond Universal) of 15 specimens each, and SBS was measured for specimens from each group by applying a shear load using a universal testing machine (UTM). Modes of failure were observed with an optical microscope. An independent-samples T-test was performed to test Levene’s assumption of homogeneity of variance across both groups, with the critical value set at 0.05. The results revealed, that the self-adhering flowable composite (Group I: Vertise™ Flow) resulted in a lower shear bond strength compared with the conventional adhesive system composite (Group II: Filtek Ultimate + Single Bond Universal). Moreover, group I predominantly exhibited non-cohesive failure, which reflects poor bonding to dentin. On the other hand, Group II showed mixed failure for most of the samples, which demonstrated strong adhesive bonding. Therefore, it could be concluded that the self-adhering flowable resin composite (Group I) results in lower SBS to dentin compared with a conventional adhesive system.

    Beschreibung: Lithium-ion batteries (LiBs) are the most important part of electric vehicle (EV) systems. Because there are two different degradation rates during LiB degradation, there are many two-phase models for LiBs. However, most of these methods do not consider the randomness of the changing point in the two-phase model and cannot update the change time in real time. Therefore, this paper proposes a method based on the combination of the two-phase Wiener model and an extreme learning machine (ELM). The two-phase Wiener model is used to derive the mathematical expression of the remaining useful life (RUL), and the ELM is implemented to adaptively detect the changing point. Based on the Poisson distribution, the distribution of the changing time is derived as a gamma distribution. To evaluate the theoretical results and practicality of the proposed method, we perform both numerical and practical simulations. The results of the simulations show that due to the precise and adaptive detection of changing points, the proposed method produces a more accurate RUL prediction than existing methods. The error of our method for detecting the changing point is about 4% and the mean prediction error of RUL in the second phase is improved from 4.39 cycles to 1.61 cycles.

    Beschreibung: Research on flexible unit systems (FUS) with the context of descriptive, predictive, and prescriptive analysis have remarkably progressed in recent times, being now reinforced in the current Industry 4.0 era with the increased focus on integration of distributed and digitalized systems. In the existing literature, most of the work focused on the individual contributions of the above mentioned three analyses. Moreover, the current literature is unclear with respect to the integration of degradation and upgradation models for FUS. In this paper, a systematic literature review on degradation, residual life distribution, workload adjustment strategy, upgradation, and predictive maintenance as major performance measures to investigate the performance of the FUS has been considered. In order to identify the key issues and research gaps in the existing literature, the 59 most relevant papers from 2009 to 2020 have been sorted and analyzed. Finally, we identify promising research opportunities that could expand the scope and depth of FUS.

    Beschreibung: The purpose of this study was to examine the combined effects of milk intake and physical activity on bone mineral density in adolescents. This study was conducted using data from the 2009–2011 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES), which provided measurements of bone mineral density (BMD) in addition to basic health-related data. This study included 1061 adolescents aged 13 to 18 years (557 males and 504 females) whose data on milk intake and participation time in moderate to vigorous physical activity were available. BMD was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Milk intake was assessed using the 24-h recall method, and the levels of physical activity were examined using a questionnaire. The physical activity questions of 2009–2011 KNHANES were based on the Korean version of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) short form. The subjects were classified into four groups according to milk intake and physical activity level: no milk intake + low-level physical activity group (MnoPlow), no milk intake + high-level physical activity group (MnoPhigh), milk intake + low-level physical activity group (MyesPlow), and milk intake + high-level physical activity group (MyesPhigh). The results of partial correlation controlling for age, body mass index (BMI), and energy intake showed that the BMD variables were associated significantly with physical activity in both males and females. Among males, the MnoPlow group had the lowest BMD in all BMD variables, showing a significant difference from the high-level physical activity groups (MnoPhigh, MyesPhigh) by multiple logistic regression analysis. Among females, the MyesPhigh group showed a significantly higher lumbar BMD value than the other groups. The MnoPlow group had approximately 0.3 to 0.5 times lower odds ratio for median or higher BMD values, compared to MyesPhigh group. These results show that milk intake and physical activity have a combined effect on BMD, and suggest that to achieve healthy bone growth, it is important to encourage both moderate to vigorous physical activity and milk intake during adolescence.

    Beschreibung: Varicocele is an age-related disease with no current medical treatments positively impacting infertility. Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) expression is present in normal testis with an involvement in the immunological reactions. The role of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-α (PPAR-α), a nuclear receptor, in fertility is still unclear. N-Palmitoylethanolamide (PEA), an emerging nutraceutical compound present in plants and animal foods, is an endogenous PPAR-α agonist with well-demonstrated anti-inflammatory and analgesics characteristics. In this model of mice varicocele, PPAR-α and TLR4 receptors’ roles were investigated through the administration of ultra-micronized PEA (PEA-um). Male wild-type (WT), PPAR-α knockout (KO), and TLR4 KO mice were used. A group underwent sham operation and administration of vehicle or PEA-um (10 mg/kg i.p.) for 21 days. Another group (WT, PPAR-α KO, and TLR4 KO) underwent surgical varicocele and was treated with vehicle or PEA-um (10 mg/kg i.p.) for 21 days. At the end of treatments, all animals were euthanized. Both operated and contralateral testes were processed for histological and morphometric assessment, for PPAR-α, TLR4, occludin, and claudin-11 immunohistochemistry and for PPAR-α, TLR4, transforming growth factor-beta3 (TGF-β3), phospho-extracellular signal-Regulated-Kinase (p-ERK) 1/2, and nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain-like receptor (NLR) family pyrin domain-containing 3 (NLRP3) Western blot analysis. Collectively, our data showed that administration of PEA-um revealed a key role of PPAR-α and TLR4 in varicocele pathophysiology, unmasking new nutraceutical therapeutic targets for future varicocele research and supporting surgical management of male infertility.

    Beschreibung: The Dynamic Facility Location problem is a generalization of the classic Facility Location problem, in which the distance metric between clients and facilities changes over time. Such metrics that develop as a function of time are usually called "evolving metrics", thus Dynamic Facility Location can be alternatively interpreted as a Facility Location problem in evolving metrics. The objective in this time-dependent variant is to balance the trade-off between optimizing the classic objective function and the stability of the solution, which is modeled by charging a switching cost when a client’s assignment changes from one facility to another. In this paper, we study the online variant of Dynamic Facility Location. We present a randomized O(logm+logn)-competitive algorithm, where m is the number of facilities and n is the number of clients. In the first step, our algorithm produces a fractional solution, in each timestep, to the objective of Dynamic Facility Location involving a regularization function. This step is an adaptation of the generic algorithm proposed by Buchbinder et al. in their work "Competitive Analysis via Regularization." Then, our algorithm rounds the fractional solution of this timestep to an integral one with the use of exponential clocks. We complement our result by proving a lower bound of Ω(m) for deterministic algorithms and lower bound of Ω(logm) for randomized algorithms. To the best of our knowledge, these are the first results for the online variant of the Dynamic Facility Location problem.

    Beschreibung: Our daily life services are quickly becoming smarter with intelligence and information through artificial intelligence (AI) and Big Data technologies. Parking services are one of the most frequently used in our daily life-cycle. This parking application could be classified into several features according to demands and properties, such as parking capacity balancing on a city-level view, parking fee maximization for achieving the service provider demand, empty parking spot notification within a parking lot, etc. This paper concentrates on parking space detection and alert to users. Most smart services rely on smart mobile derives of users such as smartphones and smartwatches. The proposed novel mechanism for smart parking is based on a smart device to gather mobile sensing data such as users’ activity and position data. Acquired mobile data are analyzed via machine learning technologies to provide dedicated parking services per user. Based on real testbed setups on campus and the proof-of-concept implementation, the proposed localization can achieve accuracy of a parking spot scale (2m-second guess 95%); moreover, it shows a much lower service operation period of 6.8 times (34s) than the legacy approach (230s).

    Beschreibung: Currently, infrared fault diagnosis mainly relies on manual inspection and low detection efficiency. This paper proposes an improved YOLOv3 network for detecting the working state of substation high-voltage lead connectors. Firstly, dilated convolution is introduced into the YOLOv3 backbone network to process low-resolution element layers, so as to enhance the network’s extraction of image features, promote function propagation and reuse, and improve the network’s recognition performance of small targets. Then the fault detection model of the infrared image of the high voltage lead connector is created and the optimal infrared image test data set is obtained through multi-scale training. Finally, the performance of the improved network model is tested on the data set. The test results show that the improved YOLOv3 network model has an average detection accuracy of 84.26% for infrared image faults of high-voltage lead connectors, which is 4.58% higher than the original YOLOv3 network model. The improved YOLOv3 network model has an average detection time of 0.308 s for infrared image faults of high-voltage lead connectors, which can be used for real-time detection in substations.

    Beschreibung: Because modern electronic systems are likely to be exposed to high intensity radiated fields (HIRF) environments, there is growing interest in understanding how electronic systems are affected by such environments. Backdoor coupling in particular is an area of concern for all electronics, but there is limited understanding about the mechanisms behind backdoor coupling. In this work, we present a study on printed circuit board (PCB) backdoor coupling and the effects of via fencing. Existing work focuses on ideal stackups and indicates that edge radiation is significantly reduced by via fencing. In this study, both full wave electromagnetic modeling and experimental verification are used to investigate both ideal and practical PCB stackups. In the ideal scenario, we find that via fencing substantially reduces coupling, which is consistent with prior work on emissions. In the practical scenario, we incorporate component footprints and traces which naturally introduce openings in the top ground plane. Both simulation and experimental data indicate that via fencing in the practical scenario does not substantially mitigate coupling, suggesting that PCB edge coupling is not the dominant coupling mechanism, even at varying angles of incidence and polarization.

    Beschreibung: To date, reinforcement concrete is the main construction material worldwide. As the concentration of atmospheric CO2 is steadily increasing, carbonation of the reinforcement concrete becomes a pressing concern. In this study, novel surface protective materials (SPMs) modified with hybrid nanoSiO2 (HNS), fly ash, and slag were developed to reduce CO2 emissions and extend the service life of the reinforcement concrete. The carbonation depths were measured by phenolphthalein to reflect the carbonation resistance. X-ray diffraction (XRD), fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) were conducted to analyze the chemical components of the samples after carbonation. In addition, MIP was carried out to examine the microstructures of the samples prior to carbonation. Thermodynamic modeling was employed to calculate the changes in the phase assemblages of each blends in an ideal situation. The experimental results showed that the carbonation depth and CaCO3 content of the SPM modified with HNS decreased by 79.0% and 64.6% compared with the reference, respectively. The TGA results showed that after carbonation, the CaCO3 contents were 4.40% and 12.42% in the HNS modified samples and reference samples, respectively. MIP analysis demonstrated that the incorporation of HNS in SPM led to a 48.3% and 58.5% decrease in big pores and capillary pores, respectively. Overall, the SPMs modified with HNS in this study possessed better carbonation resistance and refined pore structures.

    Beschreibung: Both the statistical machine translation (SMT) model and neural machine translation (NMT) model are the representative models in Uyghur–Chinese machine translation tasks with their own merits. Thus, it will be a promising direction to combine the advantages of them to further improve the translation performance. In this paper, we present a hybrid framework of developing a system combination for a Uyghur–Chinese machine translation task that works in three layers to achieve better translation results. In the first layer, we construct various machine translation systems including SMT and NMT. In the second layer, the outputs of multiple systems are combined to leverage the advantage of SMT and NMT models by using a multi-source-based system combination approach and the voting-based system combination approaches. Moreover, instead of selecting an individual system’s combined outputs as the final results, we transmit the outputs of the first layer and the second layer into the final layer to make a better prediction. Experiment results on the Uyghur–Chinese translation task show that the proposed framework can significantly outperform the baseline systems in terms of both the accuracy and fluency, which achieves a better performance by 1.75 BLEU points compared with the best individual system and by 0.66 BLEU points compared with the conventional system combination methods, respectively.

    Beschreibung: With the flourishing development of the hotel industry, the study of customer satisfaction based on online reviews and data has become a new model. In this paper, customer reviews and ratings on Ctrip.com are used, and TF-IDF and K-means algorithms are used to extract and cluster the keywords of reviews texts. Finally, 10 first-level influencing factors of hotel customer satisfaction are determined: epidemic prevention, consumption emotion, convenience, environment, facilities, catering, target group, perceived value, price, and service. Based on backpropagation neural network and weight matrix operation, an influencing factor analysis model of hotel customer satisfaction is constructed to explore the role of these factors. The results show that consumption emotion, perceived value, epidemic prevention, target group, and convenience would significantly affect customer satisfaction, among which epidemic prevention becomes a new factor affecting customer satisfaction. Environment, facilities, catering, and service have relatively little effect on customer satisfaction, while price has the least effect. This study provides a path and method for online reviews of hotel management to improve customer satisfaction and provides a theoretical basis for the study of online reviews of hotels.

    Beschreibung: Deep learning technology has improved the performance of vision-based action recognition algorithms, but such methods require a large number of labeled training datasets, resulting in weak universality. To address this issue, this paper proposes a novel self-deployable ubiquitous action recognition framework that enables a self-motivated user to bootstrap and deploy action recognition services, called FOLLOWER. Our main idea is to build a “fingerprint” library of actions based on a small number of user-defined sample action data. Then, we use the matching method to complete action recognition. The key step is how to construct a suitable “fingerprint”. Thus, a pose action normalized feature extraction method based on a three-dimensional pose sequence is designed. FOLLOWER is mainly composed of the guide process and follow the process. Guide process extracts pose action normalized feature and selects the inner class central feature to build a “fingerprint” library of actions. Follow process extracts the pose action normalized feature in the target video and uses the motion detection, action filtering, and adaptive weight offset template to identify the action in the video sequence. Finally, we collect an action video dataset with human pose annotation to research self-deployable action recognition and action recognition based on pose estimation. After experimenting on this dataset, the results show that FOLLOWER can effectively recognize the actions in the video sequence with recognition accuracy reaching 96.74%.

    Beschreibung: The control of glucose concentration is a crucial factor in clinical diagnosis and the food industry. Electrochemical biosensors based on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and conducting polymers have a high potential for practical application. A novel thermal reduction protocol of graphene oxide (GO) in the presence of malonic acid was applied for the synthesis of rGO. The rGO was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. rGO in combination with polyaniline (PANI), Nafion, and glucose oxidase (GOx) was used to develop an amperometric glucose biosensor. A graphite rod (GR) electrode premodified with a dispersion of PANI nanostructures and rGO, Nafion, and GOx was proposed as the working electrode of the biosensor. The optimal ratio of PANI and rGO in the dispersion used as a matrix for GOx immobilization was equal to 1:10. The developed glucose biosensor was characterized by a wide linear range (from 0.5 to 50 mM), low limit of detection (0.089 mM), good selectivity, reproducibility, and stability. Therefore, the developed biosensor is suitable for glucose determination in human serum. The PANI nanostructure and rGO dispersion is a promising material for the construction of electrochemical glucose biosensors.

    Beschreibung: A new optical fiber sensor based on the fluorescence lifetime was prepared for specific detection of sulfate ion concentration, where 1,1′-(anthracene-9,10-diylbis(methylene))bis(3-(dodecylcarbamoyl)pyridin-1-ium) acted as the sulfate fluorescent probe. The probe was immobilized in a porous cellulose acetate membrane to form the sensitive membrane by the immersion precipitation method, and polyethylene glycol 400 acted as a porogen. The sensing principle was proven, as a sulfate ion could form a complex with the probe through a hydrogen bond, which led to structural changes and fluorescence for the probe. The signals of the fluorescence lifetime data were collected by the lock-in amplifier and converted into the phase delay to realize the detection of sulfate ions. Based on the phase-modulated fluorometry, the relationship between the phase delay of the probe and the sulfate ion concentration was described in the range from 2 to 10 mM. The specificity and response time of this optical fiber sensor were also researched.

    Beschreibung: The actively heated fiber optics (AHFO) technique has the potential to measure soil water at high spatial and temporal resolutions, and thus it can bridge the measurement gap from point to large scales. However, the availability of power might restrict its use, since high power is required to heat long fiber optic cables under field conditions; this can be a challenge for long-term soil water monitoring under field conditions. This study investigated the performance of different heating strategies (power intensity and heating duration) on soil water measurement by the AHFO technique on three different textured soils. Different heating strategies: high power–short pulses (20 Wm−1–3 min), low power–short pulses (10 Wm−1–3 min, 5 Wm−1–3 min, 2.5 Wm−1–3 min) and low power–long pulses (10 Wm−1–5 min, 5 Wm−1–10 min, 2.5 Wm−1–15 min) were tested using laboratory soil columns. The study compared the sensitivity of the thermal response, NTcum to volumetric water content (VWC) and the predictive error of different heating strategies and soils. Results of this study showed that the sensitivity of NTcum increased and the predictive error decreased with increasing power intensity, irrespective of the soil type. Low power–short heat pulses such as 5 Wm−1–3 min and 2.5 Wm−1–3 min produced high predictive errors, RMSE of 5–6% and 6–7%, respectively. However, extending the heating duration was effective in reducing the error for both 10 and 5 Wm−1 power intensities, but not for the 2.5 Wm−1. The improvement was particularly noticeable in 5 Wm−1 –10 min; it reduced the RMSE by 1.5% (sand and clay loam) and 2.73% (sandy loam). Overall, the results of this study suggested that extending the heating duration of 10 and 5 Wm−1 power intensities can improve the sensitivity of the thermal response and predictive accuracy of the estimated soil water content (SWC). The results are particularly important for field applications of the AHFO technique, which can be limited by the availability of high power, which restricts the use of 20 Wm−1. For example, 5 Wm−1–10 min improved the predictive accuracy to 3–4%, which has the potential to be used for validating soil water estimations at satellite footprint scales. However, the effects of diurnal temperature variations should also be considered, particularly when using low power intensity such as 5 Wm−1 in surface soils under field conditions.

    Beschreibung: Electrocardiogram (ECG) signals play a vital role in diagnosing and monitoring patients suffering from various cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). This research aims to develop a robust algorithm that can accurately classify the electrocardiogram signal even in the presence of environmental noise. A one-dimensional convolutional neural network (CNN) with two convolutional layers, two down-sampling layers, and a fully connected layer is proposed in this work. The same 1D data was transformed into two-dimensional (2D) images to improve the model’s classification accuracy. Then, we applied the 2D CNN model consisting of input and output layers, three 2D-convolutional layers, three down-sampling layers, and a fully connected layer. The classification accuracy of 97.38% and 99.02% is achieved with the proposed 1D and 2D model when tested on the publicly available Massachusetts Institute of Technology-Beth Israel Hospital (MIT-BIH) arrhythmia database. Both proposed 1D and 2D CNN models outperformed the corresponding state-of-the-art classification algorithms for the same data, which validates the proposed models’ effectiveness.

    Beschreibung: Among the various polymeric options employed for the deposition of electrospun coatings, poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) has been widely investigated thanks to its excellent mechanical properties, high chemical resistance, and good thermal stability. In this work, the electrospinning technique is used for the fabrication of functional PVDF fibers in order to identify and evaluate the influence of the experimental conditions on the nanofiber properties in terms of optical transmittance, wettability, corrosion resistance, and surface morphology. Some of these properties can play a relevant role in the prevention of ice formation in aircrafts. According to this, a matrix of 4 × 4 samples of aluminum alloy AA 6061T6 was successfully coated by controlling two operational input parameters such as the resultant applied voltage (from 10 up to 17.5 KV) and the flow rate (from 800 up to 1400 µL/h) for a fixed polymeric precursor concentration (15 wt.%). The experimental results have shown a multilevel fiber-bead structure where the formation of a fiber mesh directly depends on the selected operational parameters. Several microscopy and surface analysis techniques such as confocal microscopy (CM), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), UV/vis spectroscopy, and water contact angle (WCA) were carried out in order to corroborate the morphology, transmittance, and hydrophobicity of the electrospun fiber composite. Finally, the corrosion behavior was also evaluated by electrochemical tests (Tafel curves measurement), showing that the presence of electrospun PVDF fibers produces a relevant improvement in the resultant corrosion resistance of the coated aluminum alloys.

    Beschreibung: The emergence of very high-resolution (VHR) satellite imagery (less than 1 m spatial resolution) is creating new opportunities within the fields of ecology and conservation biology. The advancement of sub-meter resolution imagery has provided greater confidence in the detection and identification of features on the ground, broadening the realm of possible research questions. To date, VHR imagery studies have largely focused on terrestrial environments; however, there has been incremental progress in the last two decades for using this technology to detect cetaceans. With advances in computational power and sensor resolution, the feasibility of broad-scale VHR ocean surveys using VHR satellite imagery with automated detection and classification processes has increased. Initial attempts at automated surveys are showing promising results, but further development is necessary to ensure reliability. Here we discuss the future directions in which VHR satellite imagery might be used to address urgent questions in whale conservation. We highlight the current challenges to automated detection and to extending the use of this technology to all oceans and various whale species. To achieve basin-scale marine surveys, currently not feasible with any traditional surveying methods (including boat-based and aerial surveys), future research requires a collaborative effort between biology, computation science, and engineering to overcome the present challenges to this platform’s use.

Recently, an anti-counterfeiting protocol to address this issue via radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology was proposed by researchers. Yet, the use case of reselling the same product has not been fully addressed which might cause serious problems for the exciting and proposed schemes and transactions. This paper proposes an extended RFID-based anti-counterfeiting protocol to address the use case of the original buyer reselling the same item to a second buyer. We will follow the proposed extended scheme with a formal security analysis to prove that the proposed protocol is secure and immune against most known security attacks.

    Beschreibung: An FTL (flash translation layer), which most flash storage devices are equipped with, needs to guarantee the consistency of modified metadata from a sudden power failure. This crash recovery scheme significantly affects the writing performance of a flash storage device during its normal operation, as well as its reliability and recovery performance; therefore, it is desirable to make the crash recovery scheme efficient. Despite the practical importance of a crash recovery scheme in an FTL, few works exist that deal with the crash recovery issue in FTL in a comprehensive manner. This study proposed a novel crash recovery scheme called FastCheck for a hybrid mapping FTL called Fully Associative Sector Translation (FAST). FastCheck can efficiently secure the newly generated address-mapping information using periodic checkpoints, and at the same time, leverages the characteristics of an FAST FTL, where the log blocks in a log area are used in a round-robin way. Thus, it provides two major advantages over the existing FTL recovery schemes: one is having a low logging overhead during normal operations in the FTL and the other to have a fast recovery time in an environment where the log provisioning rate is relatively high, e.g., over 20%, and the flash memory capacity is very large, e.g., 32 GB or 64 GB.

    Beschreibung: Guidance, navigation, and control system design is, undoubtedly, one of the most relevant issues in any type of unmanned aerial vehicle, especially in the case of military missions. This task needs to be performed in the most efficient way possible, which involves trying to satisfy a set of requirements that are sometimes in opposition. The purpose of this article was to compare two different control strategies in conjunction with a path-planning and guidance system with the objective of completing military missions in the most satisfactory way. For this purpose, a novel dynamic trajectory-planning algorithm is employed, which can obtain an appropriate trajectory by analyzing the environment as a discrete 3D adaptive mesh and performs a softening process a posteriori. Moreover, two multivariable control techniques are proposed, i.e., the linear quadratic regulator and the model predictive control, which were designed to offer optimal responses in terms of stability and robustness.

    Beschreibung: After a disaster happens, effective communication and information sharing between emergency response team members play a crucial role in a successful disaster response phase. With dedicated roles and missions are assigned to responders, role-based communication is a pivotal feature that an emergency communication network needs to support. Previous works have shown that Named Data Networking (NDN) has many advantages over traditional IP-based networks in providing this feature. However, these studies are only simulation-based. To apply NDN in disaster scenarios, real implementation of a deployment architecture over existing infrastructure during the disaster should be considered. Not only should it ensure efficient emergency communication, but the architecture should deal with other disaster-related challenges such as responder mobility, intermittent network, and replacement possibility due to disaster damage. In this paper, we designed and implemented an NDN-based disaster response support system over Edge Computing infrastructure with KubeEdge as the chosen edge platform to solve the above issues. Our proof-of-concept system performance shows that the architecture achieved efficient role-based communication support, fast mobility handover duration, quick network convergence time in case of node replacement, and loss-free information exchange between responders and the management center on the cloud.

    Beschreibung: We demonstrate spectroscopic imaging using a compact ultra-broadband terahertz semiconductor source with a high-power, mid-infrared quantum cascade laser. The electrically pumped monolithic source is based on intra-cavity difference-frequency generation and can be designed to achieve an ultra-broadband multi-mode terahertz emission spectrum extending from 1–4 THz without any external optical setup. Spectroscopic imaging was performed with three frequency bands, 2.0 THz, 2.5 THz and 3.0 THz, and as a result, this imaging technique clearly identified three different tablet components (polyethylene, D-histidine and DL-histidine). This method may be highly suitable for quality monitoring of pharmaceutical materials.

    Beschreibung: The paper presents some investigation results on the properties of forced cooling systems dedicated to electronic devices. Different structures of such systems, including Peltier modules, heat sinks, fans, and thermal interfaces, are considered. Compact thermal models of such systems are formulated. These models take into account a multipath heat transfer and make it possible to compute waveforms of the device’s internal temperature at selected values of the power dissipated in the device. The analytical formulas describing the dependences of the thermal resistance of electronic devices co-operating with the considered cooling systems on the power dissipated in the cooled electronic device and the power feeding the Peltier module and the speed of airflow caused by a fan are proposed. The correctness of the proposed models is verified experimentally in a wide range of powers dissipated in electronic devices operating in different configurations of the used cooling system.

    Beschreibung: The suppression of unnecessary radio-electronic noise and the protection of electronic devices from electromagnetic interference by the use of pliable highly microwave radiation absorbing composite materials based on polymers or rubbers filled with conductive and magnetic fillers have been proposed. Since the working frequency bands of electronic devices and systems are rapidly expanding up to the millimeter wave range, the capabilities of absorbing and shielding composites should be evaluated for increasing operating frequency. The point is that the absorption capacity of conductive and magnetic fillers essentially decreases as the frequency increases. Therefore, this paper is devoted to the absorbing capabilities of composites filled with high-loss dielectric fillers, in which absorption significantly increases as frequency rises, and it is possible to achieve the maximum frequency selective of absorption due to electromagnetic and electromechanical resonances.

    Beschreibung: Compact double notch coplanar and microstrip bandstop filters are described. They are based on a version of the open interconnected split ring resonator (OISRR) integrated in microstrip or coplanar waveguides. The OISRR introduces an RLC resonator connected in parallel with the propagating microstrip line. Therefore, this resonator can be modeled as a shunt circuit to ground, with the R, L and C elements connected in series. The consequence for the frequency response of the device is a notch band at the resonant frequency of the RLC shunt circuit. The number of notch bands can be controlled by adding more OISRRs, since each pair of rings can be modeled as a shunt circuit and therefore introduces an additional notch band. In this paper, we demonstrate that these additional rings can be introduced in a concentric way in the same cell, so the size of the device does not increase and a compact multi-notch bandstop response is achieved, with the same number of notch bands as pairs of concentric rings, plus an additional spurious band at a higher frequency.

    Beschreibung: This paper proposes a model to evaluate business projects to get into an incubator, allowing to rank them in order of selection priority. The model combines the Momentum method to build prospective scenarios and the AHP-TOPSIS-2N Multiple Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) method to rank the alternatives. Six business projects were evaluated to be incubated. The Momentum method made it possible for us to create an initial core of criteria for the evaluation of incubation projects. The AHP-TOPSIS-2N method supported the decision to choose the company to be incubated by ranking the alternatives in order of relevance. Our evaluation model has improved the existing models used by incubators. This model can be used and/or adapted by any incubator to evaluate the business projects to be incubated. The set of criteria for the evaluation of incubation projects is original and the use of prospective scenarios with an MCDM method to evaluate companies to be incubated does not exist in the literature.

    Beschreibung: The internet-of-things (IoT) is expected to have a transformative impact in several different domains, including energy management in smart grids, manufacturing, transportation, smart cities and communities, smart food and farming, and healthcare. To this direction, the maintenance cost of IoT deployments has been identified as one of the main challenges, which is directly related to energy efficiency and autonomy of IoT solutions. In order to increase the energy sustainability of next-generation IoT, wireless power transfer (WPT) emerged as a promising technology; however, its effectiveness is hindered as the distance between the base station and the wireless powered IoT devices increases. To counter this effect, decentralized approaches based on the use of distributed densely deployed remote radio heads (RRHs) can be utilized to diminish the distance between the transmitting and the receiving nodes. A trade-off ensues from the use of RRHs as power beacons (PBs) or access points (APs) that enable either energy transfer during downlink or information reception during uplink, respectively. To balance this trade-off, in this work, the maximization of the ergodic rate in ultra-dense wireless powered networks is investigated. In more detail, three different protocols are introduced, optimized, and compared to each other: density splitting, time splitting, and hybrid time and density splitting, which are based on the optimization of the portion of the number of RRHs that are employed as PBs or APs at a specific time instance. Additionally, two different policies are taken into account regarding the PBs’ power constraint. The formulated problems that correspond to the combination of the proposed protocols with each of the two considered power constraint policies are optimally solved by using convex optimization tools and closed-form solutions are derived that result to useful insights. Finally, numerical results are provided, which illustrate the ergodic rate achieved by each of the proposed protocols and offer interesting conclusions regarding their comparison, which are directly linked to design guidelines and the required capital and operational expenses.

    Beschreibung: Phacoemulsification is a widely used surgical method in cataract surgery with a high energy ultrasound source. The viscoelastic is considered to be tissue protective. The aim of this study is to investigate during surgery the impact of using viscoelastic versus no viscoelastic on clinical outcomes, potential complications and effect on endothelial cell density. The study group included 64 patients, who were subjected to phacoemulsification using balanced salt solution (BSS). Control group consisted of 62 patients, who underwent phacoemulsification using Hyaloronic acid 1% Healon 1%. Student’s t-test was applied for statistical analysis. The simulations of temperature changes during phacoemulsification were performed by COMSOL Multiphysics software. In the BSS group, a mean endothelial cell loss (ECL) of 4.5% was measured one month postoperatively, while in the Healon group ECL was 5.3%. Data analysis showed no significant difference in ECL between the groups (Student’s t-test, p = 0.8). No significant difference was observed in endothelial cell morphology and IOP between the two groups pre- and postoperatively (all p 〉 0.05). The modeling of thermo fluid dynamics showed that the heating of the cornea is slightly less when Healon was used as irrigation fluid. The phacoemulsification technique can be performed by an experienced surgeon with viscoelastics or continuous anterior chamber (AC) irrigation on the same level of safety regarding endothelial cell damage, providing equally satisfying clinical outcomes.

    Beschreibung: Objective: The health effects of a supplemented Mediterranean diet (SMD) with extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO) and nuts are well documented in non-HIV-infected individuals. We hypothesised that the benefits of an SMD could be mediated by changes in the gut microbiota, even in those with an altered intestinal microbiota such as people living with HIV. Design: Individuals living with HIV (n = 102) were randomised to receive an SMD with 50 g/day of EVOO and 30 g/day of walnuts (SMD group) or continue with their regular diet (control group) for 12 weeks. Methods: Adherence to the Mediterranean diet was assessed using the validated 14-item MD-Adherence-Screener (MEDAS) from the PREDIMED study. A sub-study classifying the participants according to their MEDAS scores was performed. Results: The lipid profile was improved in the SMD group vs. that in the control group (delta-total cholesterol and delta-B-lipoprotein). The immune activation (CD4+HLADR+CD38+ and CD8+HLADR+CD38+ cells) and IFN-γ-producing T-cells significantly decreased at week 12 compared to the baseline in the SMD group but not in the control group. The gut microbiota in those from the high-adherence group presented significantly high diversity and richness at the end of the intervention. Succinivibrio and Bifidobacterium abundances were influenced by the adherence to the MD and significantly correlated with Treg cells. Conclusion: The Mediterranean diet improved metabolic parameters, immune activation, Treg function, and the gut microbiota composition in HIV-1-infected individuals. Further, Mediterranean diet increased the Bifidobacterium abundances after the intervention, and it was associated to a beneficial profile.

    Beschreibung: In this paper, a joint multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO OFDM) radar and communication (RadCom) system is proposed, in which orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) waveforms carrying data to be transmitted to the information receiver are exploited to get high-resolution radar images at the RadCom platform. Specifically, to get two-dimensional (i.e., range and azimuth angle) radar images with high resolution, a compressive sensing-based imaging algorithm is proposed that is applicable to the signal received through multiple receive antennas. Because both the radar imaging performance (i.e., the mean square error of the radar image) and the communication performance (i.e., the achievable rate) are affected by the subcarrier allocation across multiple transmit antennas, by analyzing both radar imaging and communication performances, we also propose a subcarrier allocation strategy such that a high achievable rate is obtained without sacrificing the radar imaging performance.

    Beschreibung: This research is focused on searching for frequency and noise characteristics for available GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite Systems). The authors illustrated frequency stability and noise characteristics for a selected set of data from four different GNSS systems. For this purpose, 30-s-interval clock corrections were used for the GPS weeks 1982–2034 (the entirety of 2018). Firstly, phase data (raw clock corrections) were preprocessed for shifts and removal of outliers; GLONASS and GPS satellites characterize a smaller number of outliers than BeiDou and Galileo clock products. Secondly, frequency and Hadamard deviation were calculated. This study concludes that the stability of GPS and Galileo is better than that of BDS (BeiDou Navigation Satellite System) and GLONASS. Regarding noise, the GPS, Galileo, and BDS clocks are affected by the random walk modulation noise (RWFM), flashing frequency modulation noise (FFM), and white frequency modulation noise (WFM), whereas the GLONASS clocks are mainly affected only by WFM.

    Beschreibung: In this paper, we propose a new approach to the attitude control of quadrotors, by which angular velocity measurements or a model-based observer reconstructing the angular velocity are not needed. The proposed approach is based on recent stability results obtained for nonlinear negative imaginary systems. In specific, through an inner-outer loop method, we establish the nonlinear negative imaginary property of the quadrotor rotational subsystem. Then, a strictly negative imaginary controller is synthesized using the nonlinear negative imaginary results. This guarantees the robust asymptotic stability of the attitude of the quadrotor in the face of modeling uncertainties and external disturbances. First simulation results underline the effectiveness of the proposed attitude control approach are presented.

    Beschreibung: Community detection plays an essential role in understanding network topology and mining underlying information. A bipartite network is a complex network with more important authenticity and applicability than a one-mode network in the real world. There are many communities in the network that present natural overlapping structures in the real world. However, most of the research focuses on detecting non-overlapping community structures in the bipartite network, and the resolution of the existing evaluation function for the community structure’s merits are limited. So, we propose a novel function for community detection and evaluation of the bipartite network, called community density D. And based on community density, a bipartite network community detection algorithm DSNE (Density Sub-community Node-pair Extraction) is proposed, which is effective for overlapping community detection from a micro point of view. The experiments based on artificially-generated networks and real-world networks show that the DSNE algorithm is superior to some existing excellent algorithms; in comparison, the community density (D) is better than the bipartite network’s modularity.

    Beschreibung: Background: Pasteurized donor milk (PDM) is typically prescribed to preterm or low birthweight newborns when their mother’s own milk is unavailable. In surplus, PDM is prescribed to meet the nutritional needs of healthy newborns in the first few days of life. However, its overuse can undermine efforts to promote and support breastfeeding, waste resources, and reduce the availability of PDM for at-risk newborns. We conducted this study to examine factors associated with the prescription and prolonged use (〉48 h) of privately purchased PDM to healthy newborns. Methods: Prospective observational study of 2440 mothers of healthy, term, and normal birthweight newborns born at Da Nang Hospital for Women and Children between April and August 2019. In addition to the descriptive analysis, we performed multiple logistic regressions to examine factors associated with the prescription of PDM (n = 2440) and prolonged PDM use among those who used PDM (n = 566). Results: Twenty-three percent (566/2440) of healthy, term, and birthweight ≥2500 g newborns received PDM and were included in the study. The prevalence of PDM use was higher for cesarean births (OR: 2.05; 95% CI: 1.66, 2.55) and among male newborns (OR: 1.33; 95% CI: 1.09, 1.62), but lower for farmers or workers (vs. other jobs; OR: 0.71; 95% CI: 0.54, 0.93), family income

    Beschreibung: Vitamin D has been hypothesized to play an important role in preventing the development and progression of periodontal disease, but the underlying immune modulatory mechanisms remain understudied. We examined the cross-sectional association between biomarkers of vitamin D status and C-reactive protein (CRP) among postmenopausal women aged 53–81 years. Linear regression was used to examine the association between plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) concentrations, a biomarker of vitamin D status, and both salivary and serum CRP concentrations in 567 women from the Buffalo Osteoporosis and Periodontal Disease (OsteoPerio) Study (1997–2000). CRP concentrations were measured with multiplex arrays and transformed for normality using the natural log. Concentrations above and below the limit of detection were included in analysis as right- and left-censored observations. An inverse association was observed between 25(OH)D and salivary CRP in a model adjusted for age, smoking status, frequency of tooth brushing and flossing, and hormone therapy use (−7.56% difference in salivary CRP concentrations per 10 nmol/L increase in 25(OH)D, 95% CI: −12.78 to −2.03). Further adjustment for percent body fat attenuated this association (−2.48%, 95% CI: −7.88 to 3.24). No significant associations were found between 25(OH)D and serum CRP. Plasma vitamin D concentrations were not associated with salivary or serum CRP concentrations in this cohort of postmenopausal women.

    Beschreibung: Owing to the toxicity of polycyclic aromatic (PCA) oils, much attention has been paid to the replacement of PCA oils by other nontoxic oils. This paper reports comparative study of the effects of new vegetable oils, i.e., Moringa oil (MO) and Niger oil (NO), on rheological, physical and dynamic properties of silica–filled natural rubber composite (NRC), in comparison with petroleum–based naphthenic oil (NTO). The results reveal that MO and NO exhibit higher thermal stability and better processability than NTO. Cure characteristics of the rubber compounds are not significantly affected by the oil type. It is also found that the NRCs containing MO or NO have better tensile strength and lower dynamic energy loss than the NRCs containing NTO. This may be because both MO and NO improve filler dispersion to a greater extent than NTO as supported by storage modulus and scanning electron microscopy results. Consequently, the present study suggests that MO and NO could be used as the alternative non–toxic oils for NRC without any loss of the properties evaluated.

    Beschreibung: Within an increasingly connected world, the exponential growth in the deployment of Internet of Things (IoT) applications presents a significant challenge in power and data transfer optimisation. Currently, the maximization of Radio Frequency (RF) system power gain depends on the design of efficient, commercial chips, and on the integration of these chips by using complex RF simulations to verify bespoke configurations. However, even if a standard 50Ω transmitter’s chip has an efficiency of 90%, the overall power efficiency of the RF system can be reduced by 10% if coupled with a standard antenna of 72Ω. Hence, it is necessary for scalable IoT networks to have optimal RF system design for every transceiver: for example, impedance mismatching between a transmitter’s antenna and chip leads to a significant reduction of the corresponding RF system’s overall power efficiency. This work presents a versatile design framework, based on well-known theoretical methods (i.e., transducer gain, power wave approach, transmission line theory), for the optimal design in terms of power delivered to a load of a typical RF system, which consists of an antenna, a matching network, a load (e.g., integrated circuit) and transmission lines which connect all these parts. The aim of this design framework is not only to reduce the computational effort needed for the design and prototyping of power efficient RF systems, but also to increase the accuracy of the analysis, based on the explanatory analysis within our design framework. Simulated and measured results verify the accuracy of this proposed design framework over a 0–4 GHz spectrum. Finally, a case study based on the design of an RF system for Bluetooth applications demonstrates the benefits of this RF design framework.

    Beschreibung: Weather change such as raining is a crucial factor to cause traffic congestion, especially in metropolises with the limited sewer system infrastructures. Identifying the roads which are sensitive to weather changes, defined as weather-sensitive roads (WSR), can facilitate the infrastructure development. In the literature, little research focused on studying weather factors of developing countries that might have deficient infrastructures. In this research, to fill the gap, the real-world data associating with Jakarta, Indonesia, was studied to identify WSR based on smartphone sensor data, real-time weather information, and road characteristics datasets. A spatial-temporal congestion speed matrix (STC) was proposed to illustrate traffic speed changes over time. Under the proposed STC, a sequential clustering and classification framework was applied to identify the WSR in terms of traffic speed. In this work, the causes of WSR were evaluated based on the variables’ importance of the classification method. The experimental results show that the proposed method can cluster the roads according to the pattern changes in the traffic speed caused by weather change. Based on the results, we found that the distances to shopping malls, mosques, schools, and the roads’ altitude, length, width, and the number of lanes are highly correlated to WSR in Jakarta.

    Beschreibung: High stress levels and sleep deprivation may cause several mental or physical health issues, such as depression, impaired memory, decreased motivation, obesity, etc. The COVID-19 pandemic has produced unprecedented changes in our lives, generating significant stress, and worries about health, social isolation, employment, and finances. To this end, nowadays more than ever, it is crucial to deliver solutions that can help people to manage and control their stress, as well as to reduce sleep disturbances, so as to improve their health and overall quality of life. Technology, and in particular Ambient Intelligence Environments, can help towards that direction, when considering that they are able to understand the needs of their users, identify their behavior, learn their preferences, and act and react in their interest. This work presents two systems that have been designed and developed in the context of an Intelligent Home, namely CaLmi and HypnOS, which aim to assist users that struggle with stress and poor sleep quality, respectively. Both of the systems rely on real-time data collected by wearable devices, as well as contextual information retrieved from the ambient facilities of the Intelligent Home, so as to offer appropriate pervasive relaxation programs (CaLmi) or provide personalized insights regarding sleep hygiene (HypnOS) to the residents. This article will describe the design process that was followed, the functionality of both systems, the results of the user studies that were conducted for the evaluation of their end-user applications, and a discussion about future plans.

    Beschreibung: Planetary boundaries are an important sustainability concept, defining absolute limits for resource use and emissions that need to be respected to avoid major and potentially irreversible earth system change. To remain within the safe operating space for humanity, there is a need for urgent adoption of climate-neutral diets, which make no additional contribution to warming. In the first study of its kind, a new climate metric, the Global Warming Potential Star (GWP*), was used to assess greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with 9341 Australian adult diets obtained from the Australian Health Survey. Dietary climate footprints averaged 3.4 kg CO2-equivelent per person per day, with total energy intake explaining around one quarter of the variation. Energy-dense and nutrient-poor discretionary foods contributed around one third. With lower climate footprint food choices, a diet consistent with current Australian dietary guidelines had a 42% lower climate footprint. Currently, it is not possible to define a climate-neutral dietary strategy in Australia because there are very few climate-neutral foods in the Australian food system. To bring Australian diets into line with the climate stabilization goals of the Paris Agreement, the most important need is for innovation across the agricultural and food processing industries to expand the range of climate-neutral foods available.
