    Beschreibung: Italy has a strong geothermal potential for power generation, although, at present, the only two geothermal fields being exploited are Larderello-Travale/Radicondoli and Mt. Amiata in the Tyrrhenian pre-Apennine volcanic district of Southern Tuscany. A new target for geothermal exploration and exploitation in Italy is represented by the Southern Tyrrhenian submarine volcanic district, a geologically young basin (Upper Pliocene-Pleistocene) characterised by tectonic extension where many seamounts have developed. Heat-flow data from that area show significant anomalies comparable to those of onshore geothermal fields. Fractured basaltic rocks facilitate seawater infiltration and circulation of hot water chemically altered by rock/water interactions, as shown by the widespread presence of hydrothermal deposits. The persistence of active hydrothermal activity is consistently shown by many different sources of evidence, including: heat-flow data, gravity and magnetic anomalies, widespread presence of hydrothermal-derived gases (CO2, CO, CH4), 3He/4He isotopic ratios, as well as broadband OBS/H seismological information, which demonstrates persistence of volcano-tectonic events and High Frequency Tremor (HFT). The Marsili and Tyrrhenian seamounts are thus an important—and likely long-lasting-renewable energy resource. This raises the possibility of future development of the world’s first offshore geothermal power plant.

    Beschreibung: We applied the Small Baseline Subset multi-temporal InSAR technique (SBAS) to two SAR datasets acquired from 2003 up to 2013 by Envisat (ESA, European Space Agency) and COSMO-SkyMed (ASI, Italian Space Agency) satellites to investigate spatial and temporal patterns of land subsidence in the Sibari Plain (Southern Italy). Subsidence processes (up to ~20 mm/yr) were investigated comparing geological, hydrogeological, and land use information with interferometric results. We suppose a correlation between subsidence and thickness of the Plio-Quaternary succession suggesting an active role of the isostatic compensation. Furthermore, the active back thrusting in the Corigliano Gulf could trigger a flexural subsidence mechanism even if fault activity and earthquakes do not seem play a role in the present subsidence. In this context, the compaction of Holocene deposits contributes to ground deformation. Despite the rapid urbanization of the area in the last 50 years, we do not consider the intensive groundwater pumping and related water table drop as the main triggering cause of subsidence phenomena, in disagreement with some previous publications. Our interpretation for the deformation fields related to natural and anthropogenic factors would be a comprehensive and exhaustive justification to the complexity of subsidence processes in the Sibari Plain.

    Beschreibung: An instrument has been built to carry out continuous in-situ measurement of small differences in water pressure, conductivity and temperature, in natural surface water and groundwater systems. A low-cost data telemetry system provides data on shore in real time if desired. The immediate purpose of measurements by this device is to continuously infer fluxes of water across the sediment-water interface in a complex estuarine system; however, direct application to assessment of sediment-water fluxes in rivers, lakes, and other systems is also possible. Key objectives of the design include both low cost, and accuracy of the order of ±0.5 mm H2O in measured head difference between the instrument’s two pressure ports. These objectives have been met, although a revision to the design of one component was found to be necessary. Deployments of up to nine months, and wireless range in excess of 300 m have been demonstrated.

    Beschreibung: We analyze the coseismic stress perturbation during the 17 June 2000 south Iceland seismic sequence; the main shock (Ms 6.6) was followed by three large events within a few tens of seconds (8, 26, and 30 s) located within 80 km. The aim of this paper is to investigate short-term fault interaction and instantaneous triggering. This happens when a fault perturbed by a stress change fails before the end of the transient stress perturbation. We compute the shear, normal, and Coulomb stress changes as functions of time in a stratified elastic half-space by using discrete wave number and reflectivity methods. We calculate dynamic stresses caused by the main shock at the hypocenters of these three subsequent events. Our numerical results show that the onset of the last two events is slightly delayed with respect to the arrival time of the second positive peak of Coulomb stress variation, while the first event occurred after the first positive stress peak. We have also analyzed the response of a spring slider system representing a fault governed by a rate- and state-dependent friction law, perturbed by shear and normal stress variations caused by the main shock. The fault response to the computed stress perturbations is always clock advanced. We have found suitable constitutive parameters of the modeled fault that allow the instantaneous dynamic triggering of these three earthquakes. If the initial sliding velocity is comparable with the tectonic loading velocity, we obtained failure times close to the observed origin times for low values of the initial effective normal stress.

    Beschreibung: High resolution seismic data, we collected in the Ionian sea, reveal large submarine landslide deposits offshore from Mt. Etna (Italy), spatially consistent with the eastern flank collapse of this volcano. A large debris-avalanche deposit, we relate to the Valle del Bove scar, displays long offshore run-outs (till 20 km) and a volume of a few tens of cubic kilometres (16–21 km3). Other landslide deposits are also imaged, in particular a striking unique record of the relative timing of multiple submarine large slump events.

    Beschreibung: Recent strong (M 6.6) earthquakes in Greece are examined from the point of view of two current, but disparate, approaches to long-term seismogenesis. These are the evolving stress field (ESF) approach, in which earthquakes are considered to be triggered by accumulated stress changes from past earthquakes and tectonic loading on the major faults, and the precursory scale increase (Y) approach, in which a major earthquake is preceded in the long term by an increase in minor earthquake occurrences, with the magnitude of the precursory earthquakes, and the precursor time and area all scaling with the major earthquake magnitude. The strong earthquakes are found to be consistent with both approaches, and it is inferred that both approaches have a relevant role to play in the description of the long-term generation process of major earthquakes. A three-stage faulting model proposed previously to explain the Y phenomenon involves a major crack, which eventually fractures in the major earthquake, being formed before the onset of precursory seismicity. Hence we examine whether ESF can account for the formation of the major crack by examining the accumulated stress changes at the time of the onset of Y for each strong earthquake. In each case, the answer is in the affirmative; there is enhanced stress in the vicinity of the main shock at the time of the onset. The same is true for most, but not all, of the locations of precursory earthquakes.

    Beschreibung: Time-invariant, long-range, and short-range forecasting models were fitted to the earthquake catalogue of Greece for magnitudes 4.0 and greater to optimize their ability to forecast events of magnitude 6.0 and greater in the period 1966–1980. The models considered were stationary spatially uniform and spatially varying Poisson models, a long-range forecasting model based on the precursory scale increase phenomenon with every earthquake regarded as a precursor according to scale, and epidemic type short-range forecasting models with spatially uniform and spatially varying spontaneous seismicity. Each of the models was then applied to the catalogue for 1981–2002, and their forecasting performance was compared using the log likelihood statistic. The long-range forecasting model performed substantially better than the time-invariant models, and the short-range forecasting models performed substantially better again. The results show that the information value to be gained from modeling temporal and spatial variation of earthquake occurrence rate, at both long and short range, is much greater than can be gained from modeling spatial variation alone.
