    Description: The study deals with a large sand body (spit-bar) attached to the eastern tip of the Robberg Peninsula, Plettenberg Bay, South Africa. To date, the bar has prograded about 8 km beyond the tip of the peninsula. The bar top is predominantly composed of medium sand, the upper slope of fine sand, and the lower slope of fine muddy sand. Stratigraphically, the sedimentology thus documents an upward coarsening, calcareous quartz-arenitic depositional sequence. The spit-bar as a whole forms the eastern end of a sediment compartment that is clearly distinguishable from neighbouring compartments on the basis of its geomorphology, the textural characteristics of the sediment, and the distribution of sediment thicknesses. Aeolian overpass across the peninsula appears to have formed a fan-like sand deposit in its rear, which is perched upon the upper shoreface of the bay as suggested by the bathymetry to the north of the peninsula. It forms an integral part of the sediment body defining the spit-bar. The estimated volume of sand stored in the spit-bar amounts to 5.815 km3, of which 0.22 km3 is contributed by the aeolian overpass sand. The sediment sources of the spit-bar are located up to 100 km to the west, where a number of small rivers supply limited amounts of sediment to the sea and numerous coastal aeolianite ridges in the Wilderness embayment have been subject to erosion after becoming drowned in the course of the postglacial sea-level rise since about 12 ky BP. By contrast, the sediment volume in the adjacent compartment B to the north (Plettenberg Bay), which has been supplied by local rivers, amounts to only 0.127 km3. In a geological context, large sand bodies such as the Robberg spit-bar are excellent exploration models for hydrocarbons (oil and gas).

    Description: A large, deep-seated ancient landslide was partially reactivated on 17 June 2020 close to the Aniangzhai village of Danba County in Sichuan Province of Southwest China. It was initiated by undercutting of the toe of this landslide resulting from increased discharge of the Xiaojinchuan River caused by the failure of a landslide dam, which had been created by the debris flow originating from the Meilong valley. As a result, 12 townships in the downstream area were endangered leading to the evacuation of more than 20000 people. This study investigated the Aniangzhai landslide area by optical and radar satellite remote sensing techniques. A horizontal displacement map produced using cross-correlation of high-resolution optical images from Planet shows a maximum horizontal motion of approximately 15 meters for the slope failure between the two acquisitions. The undercutting effects on the toe of the landslide are clearly revealed by exploiting optical data and field surveys, indicating the direct influence of the overflow from the landslide dam and water release from a nearby hydropower station on the toe erosion. Pre-disaster instability analysis using a stack of SAR data from Sentinel-1 between 2014 and 2020 suggests that the Aniangzhai landslide has long been active before the failure, with the largest annual LOS deformation rate more than 50 mm/yr. The 3-year wet period that followed a relative drought year in 2016 resulted in a 14% higher average velocity in 2018–2020, in comparison to the rate in 2014–2017. A detailed analysis of slope surface kinematics in different parts of the landslide indicates that temporal changes in precipitation are mainly correlated with kinematics of motion at the head part of the failure body, where an accelerated creep is observed since spring 2020 before the large failure. Overall, this study provides an example of how full exploitation of optical and radar satellite remote sensing data can be used for a comprehensive analysis of destabilization and reactivation of an ancient landslide in response to a complex cascading event chain in the transition zone between the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and the Sichuan Basin.

    Description: After almost 200 years of exposure, the monuments of General Scharnhorst and Bülow have been analysed by means of ultrasound. Both sculptures are made of Carrara marble, both sculptures have been exposed to the same environmental influences and both sculptures are, based on the results of the ultrasonic measurements, in alarming conditions. This statement can be made because of the data of three different measurement investigations within the last 12 years. In this short exposure time, the already low velocities have been reduced by 16.2% and 14.7%. The very low average velocity of 2.8 km/s for the sculpture of General Bülow and a slightly higher average velocity of 3.2 km/s for the Scharnhorst sculpture indicate that both sculptures are in a poor condition, even though a protective winter shelter has been used since 2004. Comparing tomographic velocity measurements performed in 2006 with the measurements made in 2018 was possible and showed that even areas with a thickness up to 90 cm show alarming low ultrasonic velocities down to 2.6 km/s. Even if the circumstances for both sculptures have been the same, they differ in their weathering state. The careful and transparent documentation of all measurements was in this context the most important aspect for the comparative studies. Irregularities in their weathering behaviour of the two statues can be distinguished, allowing an in-depth analysis of the deterioration of the marble.

    Description: Flat lakes with a large catchment area are especially affected by sediment inputs. The Kolleru Lake catchment (south-eastern India) with a surface area of approximately 6121 km〈sup〉2〈/sup〉 belongs to such types of lake basins. The study’s main objective was the assessment of both soil erosion and sediment yield concentration rate of the Kolleru catchment. The study was conducted using the revised universal soil loss equation (RUSLE) model due to its simple and good applicability for soil erosion estimation. Data such as rainfall, soil texture, topography, crop cover management, and support practice factor were integrated into the modeling using RUSLE and ArcGIS. Field data were used both to analyze the soil texture and the slope length factor. The results showed that average annual soil loss was estimated with 13.6 t/ha/year, classifying the Kolleru Lake Basin under a very high erosion rate category. About 38% of the catchment area has encountered slight soil loss. Areas covered with moderate, strong, severe, very severe erosion potential zones are 29%, 17%, 9%, and 5.5%, respectively. This study identified that upland areas with less vegetation cover exported high potential erosion rates. Unlike the soil loss, the sediment delivery ratio values for the catchment were not affected by land use, while it showed a strong relationship with the catchment drainage system. Whereas, the average annual sediment yield was determined with 7.61 t/ha/year, had identified with the same pattern of the soil erosion. Catchment topography, vegetation, drainage system, soil properties, and land use cover played a major role in exporting the highest sedimentation. The outcome of these studies can be used among others to identify critical erosion areas on a pixel basis for the planning of erosion management practices.

    Description: The feasibility of precise real-time orbit determination of low earth orbit satellites using onboard GNSS observations is assessed using six months of flight data from the Sentinel-6A mission. Based on offline processing of dual-constellation pseudorange and carrier phase measurements as well as broadcast ephemerides in a sequential filter with a reduced dynamic force model, navigation solutions with a representative position error of 10 cm (3D RMS) are achieved. The overall performance is largely enabled by the superior quality of the Galileo broadcast ephemerides, which exhibits a two- to three-times smaller signal-in-space-range error than GPS and allows for geodetic-grade GNSS real-time orbit determination without a need for external correction services. Compared to GPS-only processing, a roughly two-times better navigation accuracy is achieved in a Galileo-only or mixed GPS/Galileo processing. On the other hand, GPS tracking offers a useful complement and additional robustness in view of a still incomplete Galileo constellation. Furthermore, it provides improved autonomy of the navigation process through the availability of earth orientation parameters in the new civil navigation message of the L2C signal. Overall, GNSS-based onboard orbit determination can now reach a similar performance as the DORIS (Doppler Orbitography and Radiopositioning Integrated by Satellite) navigation system. It lends itself as a viable alternative for future remote sensing missions.

    Description: For more than 20 years, precise point positioning (PPP) has been a well-established technique for carrier phase-based navigation. Traditionally, it relies on precise orbit and clock products to achieve accuracies in the order of centimeters. With the modernization of legacy GNSS constellations and the introduction of new systems such as Galileo, a continued reduction in the signal-in-space range error (SISRE) can be observed. Supported by this fact, we analyze the feasibility and performance of PPP with broadcast ephemerides and observations of Galileo and GPS. Two different functional models for compensation of SISREs are assessed: process noise in the ambiguity states and the explicit estimation of a SISRE state for each channel. Tests performed with permanent reference stations show that the position can be estimated in kinematic conditions with an average three-dimensional (3D) root mean square (RMS) error of 29 cm for Galileo and 63 cm for GPS. Dual-constellation solutions can further improve the accuracy to 25 cm. Compared to standard algorithms without SISRE compensation, the proposed PPP approaches offer a 40% performance improvement for Galileo and 70% for GPS when working with broadcast ephemerides. An additional test with observations taken on a boat ride yielded 3D RMS accuracy of 39 cm for Galileo, 41 cm for GPS, and 27 cm for dual-constellation processing compared to a real-time kinematic reference solution. Compared to the use of process noise in the phase ambiguity estimation, the explicit estimation of SISRE states yields a slightly improved robustness and accuracy at the expense of increased algorithmic complexity. Overall, the test results demonstrate that the application of broadcast ephemerides in a PPP model is feasible with modern GNSS constellations and able to reach accuracies in the order of few decimeters when using proper SISRE compensation techniques.
