Description: Phosphate deposits which apparently formed during the Miocene climatic optimum are widespread on the Chatham Rise and Camp bell Plateau, and on seamounts in the north Tasman Sea. They formed under oxidising conditions by the phosphatisation of older or contemporaneous foraminiferal oozes (Campbell Plateau and Chatham Rise) and coral limestones (Tasman Sea). The phosphorites of the rise and plateau were formed where current activity was sufficiently strong to prevent normal sedimentation, and now form lag deposits. After the Miocene, phosphorite formation ceased and was followed by manganese oxide deposition where conditions were highly oxidising on the eastern Campbell Plateau and north Tasman seamounts, and by glauconite formation in the much less oxidising environments of the western Campbell Plateau and the Chat ham Rise. The manganese deposits are not volcanogenic, as was formerly thought, but formed by slow precipitation from well oxygenated sea water.

In:  Supplement to: Piper, David Z; Williamson, M E (1977): Composition of Pacific Ocean ferromanganese nodules. Marine Geology, 23(4), 285-303, https://doi.org/10.1016/0025-3227(77)90036-6
    Publication Date: 2024-04-16
Description: Bulk composition of ferromanganese nodules from the pelagic environment of the Pacific Ocean is apparently related to nodule-growth rate, sediment-accumulation rate, and biologic productivity in the overlying seawater. Nodules with a high Mn/Fe ratio and high Ni and Cu concns tend to occur in areas where primary productivity in the surface layer of the ocean is high and the sediment accumulation rate low. They may have a Mn/Fe ratio as low as one and accrete at rates as low as 1 mm per 1 million years. Nodules with a larger Mn/Fe ratio apparently have growth rates that are greater by as much as a factor of 10.

In:  Supplement to: Carter, Lionel (1979): Significance of Unstained and Stained Gravel on the Newfoundland Continental Slope and Rise. Journal of Sedimentary Research, 49(4), 1147-1158, https://doi.org/10.1306/212F78D3-2B24-11D7-8648000102C1865D
    Publication Date: 2024-04-16
Description: The continental slope and rise, east of Newfoundland, accommodates two distinct gravel populations. The upper slope (300-700 m depth) population is characterized by unstained, granules to boulders of predominantly granitic and terrigenous sedimentary compositon that show affinity to Paleozoic and Proterozoic rocks of Newfoundland and areas further north. The rise (2,500-〉3,000 m depth) population consists of iron- and ferromanganese-stained granules to cobbles composed mainly of carbonate that presumably has been derived from the high Canadian Arctic. The rise clasts are further distinguished in that they are finer grained, slightly more rounded and more altered by solution and/or boring organisms than their shallower water counterparts. The upper slope gravel has been reworked from underlying sediments, and deposited from ice rafts, and both processes are probably continuing today. Gravel on the rise has been concentrated through winnowing of middle Holocene sediments by the Western Boundary Undercurrent which appears to have been operative as a winnowing agent since about 4,000 to 5,000 y BP. The undercurrent has also affected the distribution of stained gravel which is most common and most intensely stained beneath a fast-flowing undercurrent core where environmental conditions resemble those documented for deep-sea, ferromanganese nodule fields.
