Description: Sound pressure levels, frequency spectrum, and jet velocity profiles are presented for an engine-afterburner combination at various values of afterburner fuel - air ratio. At the high fuel-air ratios, severe low-frequency resonance was encountered which represented more than half the total energy in the sound spectrum. At similar thrust conditions, lower sound pressure levels were obtained from a current fighter air craft with a different afterburner configuration. The lower sound pressure levels are attributed to resonance-free afterburner operation and thereby indicate the importance of acoustic considerations in afterburner design.

Description: The effects of several wing leading-edge camber and deflected-tip modifications on the force and moment characteristics of a 1/20-scale model of the Convair F-102 airplane have been determined at Mach numbers from 0.60 t o 1.14 for angles of attack up to 14 deg. in the Langley 8-foot transonic tunnel. The effects of elevator deflections from 0 deg. to -10 deg. were also obtained for a configuration incorporating favorable leading- edge and tip modifications. Leading-edge modifications which had a small amount of constant-chord camber obtained by vertically adjusting the thickness distribution over the forward (3.9 percent of the mean aerodynamic chord) portion of the wing were ineffective in reducing the drag at lifting conditions at transonic speeds. Leading edges with relatively large cambers designed to support nearly elliptical span load distributions at lift coefficients of 0.15 and 0.22 near a Mach number of 1.0 produced substantial reductions in drag at most lift coefficients.

Description: An investigation of a decoupler and a controlled-feathering device incorporated with the YT-56A turboprop engine has been made to determine the effectiveness of these devices in reducing the high negative thrust (drag) which accompanies power failure of this type of engine. Power failures were simulated by fuel cut-off, both without either device free to operate, and with each device free to operate singly. The investigation was made through an airspeed range from 50 to 230 mph. It was found that with neither device free to operate, the drag levels realized after power failures at airspeeds above 170 mph would impose vertical tail loads higher than those allowable for the YC-130, the airplane for which the test power package was designed. These levels were reached in approximately one second. The maximum drag realized after power failure was not appreciably altered by the use of the decoupler although the decoupler did put a limit on the duration of the peak drag. The controlled-feathering device maintained a level of essentially zero drag after power failure. The use of the decoupler in the YT-56A engine complicates windmilling air-starting procedures and makes it necessary to place operating restrictions on the engine to assure safe flight at low-power conditions,

Description: The operational characteristics of a J57-P1 turbojet engine have been investigated at altitudes between 15,000 and 66,000 feet in the Lewis altitude wind tunnel. Included in this study is a discussion of fuel nozzle coking, the altitude operating limits with and without the standard engine control, the compressor surge characteristics, and the engine starting and windmilling characteristics. Severe circumferential turbine outlet temperature gradients which occurred at high altitude as a result of fuel nozzle coking were alleviated by the manufacturer's change in the fuel flow divider schedule and in a nozzle gasket material. Compressor air bleed is required to prevent surge of the outboard compressor in the low engine speed region. The maximum altitude at which the engine was operated without the control was about 66,000 feet at 0.8 flight Mach number and at a reduced engine speed to avoid compressor surge; with the engine control in operation, the altitude operating limit is reduced to approximately 59,000 feet. The maximum altitude at which the engine was started was about 40,000 feet.

Description: An investigation was made of a 1/10-scale dynamically similar model of the North American F-86 airplane to study its behavior when ditched. The model was landed in calm water at the Langley tank no. 2 monorail. Various landing attitudes, speeds, and conditions of damage were simulated. The behavior of the model was determined from visual observations, acceleration records, and motion-picture records of the ditchings. Data are presented in tabular form, sequence photographs, and time-history acceleration curves. From the results of the investigation it was concluded that the airplane should be ditched at the nose-high, 14 deg attitude to avoid the violent dive which occurs at the 4 deg attitude. The flaps and leading-edge slats should be fully extended to obtain the lowest possible landing speed. The wing tanks should be jettisoned to avoid the undesirable behavior which occurs with the tanks attached. In a calm-water ditching under these conditions the airplane will run smoothly for about 600 feet. Maximum longitudinal and vertical decelerations of about 3g will be encountered.

Description: An investigation is being conducted to determine the dynamic stability and control characteristics of a 0.13-scale flying model of Convair XFY-1 vertically rising airplane. This paper presents the results of flight and force tests to determine the stability and control characteristics of the model in vertical descent and landings in still air. The tests indicated that landings, including vertical descent from altitudes representing up to 400 feet for the full-scale airplane and at rates of descent up to 15 or 20 feet per second (full scale), can be performed satisfactorily. Sustained vertical descent in still air probably will be more difficult to perform because of large random trim changes that become greater as the descent velocity is increased. A slight steady head wind or cross wind might be sufficient to eliminate the random trim changes.

Description: A supplementary investigation was conducted in the Langley 20-foot free-spinning tunnel on a 1/24-scale model of the Grumman F9F-6 airplane. The primary purpose of the investigation was to reevaluate the spin-recovery characteristics of the airplane in view of the fact that the ailerons had been eliminated from the flaperon-aileron lateral control system of the airplane. A spin-tunnel investigation on a model of the earlier version of the F9F-6 airplane had indicated that use of ailerons with the spin (stick right in a right spin) was essential to insure recovery. The results indicate that with.ailerons eliminated, it may be difficult to obtain an erect developed spin but if a fully developed spin is obtained on the airplane, recovery therefrom may be difficult or impossible. Flaperon deflection should have little effect on spins or recoveries.

Description: An experimental investigation has been conducted to determine the stability and control characteristics of a 0.13-scale free-flight model of the Convair XFY-1 airplane during take-offs and landings in steady winds. The tests indicated that take-offs in headwinds up to at least 20 knots (full scale) will be fairly easy to perform although the airplane may be blown downstream as much as 3 spans before a trim condition can be established. The distance that the airplane will be blown down-stream can be reduced by restraining the upwind landing gear until the instant of take-off. The tests also indicated that spot landings in headwinds up to at least 30 knots (full scale) and in crosswinds up to at least 20 knots (full scale) can be accomplished with reasonable accuracy although, during the landing approach, there will probably be an undesirable nosing-up tendency caused by ground effect and by the change in angle of attack resulting from vertical descent. Some form of arresting gear will probably be required to prevent the airplane from rolling downwind or tipping over after contact. This rolling and tipping can be prevented by a snubbing line attached to the tip of the upwind' wing or tail or by an arresting gear consisting of a wire mesh on the ground and hooks on the landing gear to engage the mesh.

Description: An experimental investigation has been conducted to determine the dynamic stability and control characteristics in hovering and transition flight of a 0.13-scale flying model of the Convair XFY-1 vertically rising airplane with the lower vertical tail removed. The purpose of the tests was to obtain a general indication of the behavior of a vertically rising airplane of the same general type as the XFY-1 but without a lower vertical tail in order to simplify power-off belly landings in an emergency. The model was flown satisfactorily in hovering flight and in the transition from hovering to normal unstalled forward flight (angle of attack approximately 30deg). From an angle of attack of about 30 down to the lowest angle of attack covered in the flight tests (approximately 15deg) the model became progressively more difficult to control. These control difficulties were attributed partly to a lightly damped Dutch roll oscillation and partly to the fact that the control deflections required for hovering and transition flight were too great for smooth flight at high speeds. In the low-angle-of-attack range not covered in the flight tests, force tests have indicated very low static directional stability which would probably result in poor flight characteristics. It appears, therefore, that the attainment of satisfactory directional stability, at angles of attack less than 10deg, rather than in the hovering and transition ranges of flight is the critical factor in the design of the vertical tail for such a configuration.

Description: A method has been developed for modifying a rocket motor so that its exhaust characteristics simulate those of a turbojet engine. The analysis necessary to the design is presented along with tests from which the designs are evaluated. Simulation was found to be best if the exhaust characteristics to be duplicated were those of a turbojet engine at high altitudes and with the afterburner operative.

Description: This paper presents the results of an investigation of the dynamic stability and controllability of a model which approximately represents the Lockheed XFV-1 airplane to a 1/8 scale. The investigation consisted of hovering flights in still air at a considerable height above the ground, hovering flights very close to the ground, vertical take-offs and landings, flights through the transition range from hovering to normal forward flight, and sideways translational flights. The model could be flown smoothly and easily in hovering flight despite the fact that the uncontrolled pitching and yawing motions were unstable oscillations. There was a noticeable reduction in the controllability of the model when hovered very close to the ground but take-offs could be made easily and landings on a g,ven spot could be made accurately in spite of this adverse ground effect. Flights through the transition range from hovering to normal forward flight could be performed fairly easily. The model seemed to have stability of angle of attack and angle of roll over most of the transition range. The yawing motion was divergent in the very high angle-of-attack range but could be controlled easily. At the lower angles of attack, the model seemed to become stable in yaw. In sideways flight there was an increasingly strong tendency to diverge in roll as the speed was increased and finally, at a speed of about 25 knots (full scale), the model rolled off despite efforts of the pilot to control it.

Description: At the request of the Bureau of Aeronautics, Department of the Navy, National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics has conducted a preliminary investigation at high subsonic speeds of the static longitudinal and lateral stability characteristics of a 0.05-scale model of the Convair F2Y-1 water-based fighter airplane. The tests covered a Mach number range from 0.5 to 0.94 and corresponding Reynolds numbers, based on the wing mean aerodynamic chord, from 3.3 x 10(exp 6) to 4.3 x 10(exp 6). The maximum angle-of-attack range (obtained at the lower Mach numbers) was from -2 degrees to 25 degrees. Sideslip angles from -4 degrees to 12 degrees also were investigated. The investigation included effects of various arrangements of wing fences and of rocket packages.

Description: A turbine blade with a porous stainless-steel shell sintered to a supporting steel strut has been fabricated for tests at the NACA by Federal-Mogul Corporation under contract from the Bureau of Aeronautics, Department of the Navy. The apparent permeability of this blade, on the average, more nearly approaches the values specified by the NAGA than did two strut-supported bronze blades in a previous investigation. Random variations of permeability in the present blade are substantialy greater than those of the bronze blades, but projected improvements in certain phases of the fabrication process are expected to reduce these variations.

Description / Table of Contents: Protective Lead Coating by PaintThe number of metallic pigments capable of being used as a rust preventative is small. Ultra-finely pulverised lead has proved to be far superior to all other metals. However, the addition of a binder in all respects suitable to the pigment is an absolute necessity when lead is used. Chlorinated rubber has been proved to be of particular value in this respect. The use of “Plumbol” paint also applies a coating of lead on the surface of iron, one coat of which has the same protective value as three or four coats of oil-bound paints. Weathering tests have also substantiated the protective value of lead coating paints as compared with the usual oil-bound paints. A maximum of protection is obtained against the action of certain chemical agents (soda lye, potash lye, sulphurous acid, sulphuric acid, acetic acid and other cold dilute acids), but no protection against the effect of nitrose (a solution of nitrosyl sulphuric acid in sulphuric acid, formed in the lead-chamber process) fumes and nitric acid results. Generally speaking, a coating of „Plumbol“ paint affords the same protection as a coating of metallic lead the same thickness.

Description / Table of Contents: Temporary Anti-corrosive MeasuresThe article opens with a survey of the various methods employed for ensuring temporary protection against rust. The following points are then discussed:  -  creation of a non-corrosive ambient atmosphere, use of special removable protective coatings (having an oil, wax or patty base). Particular attention is paid to the use of Dicyclorhexylammonium nitrite (VPI) and to modern anticorrosion compounds having a mineral oil base. Some practical examples of the application of these protective coatings for interior and exterior surfaces are included. The removal of such coatings is then discussed. The article closes with a brief discussion on tests suitable for testing temporary anti-corrosive compounds. A compendious bibliography on the subject is appended.

Description / Table of Contents: Reactions in the Intermediate Stratum between Iron and Coating Systems and the Effect of InhibitorsCorrect surface pre-treatment of iron and steel is regarded as irremissible for good performance and maximum service life of a coating system in corrosion control. The peculiar features of surface texture are characterized by a mosaic of anodic and cathodic ranges. Industry's tendency to speed up every process to the utmost calls for quick drying paints. Their wetting properties and their water permeability determine adhesion characteristics and electrochemical attack. Therefore, the paint chosen has to correspond with the pre-treatement applied to the surface or vice versa. The addition of suitable inhibitors contributes to the efficiency and performance of the coating. Combinations of inhibitors with ionadsorbing film-forming materials create an active intermediate stratum between metal and paint, improving adhesion and preventing corrosion. The development of a special surface-technology is necessary for pursuing the aim of prolonging the life of steel structures and/ or reducing maintenance costs, even under the most severe service conditions.

Description / Table of Contents: Cathodic corrosion PreventionThe article opens with a short definition of the term „Cathodic Corrosion Prevention“ and then describes the possibilities and limits of the application of cathodic protection by the use of outside current supplies in conjunction with an auxiliary insoluble anode. The appearance of cathodic corrosion, which limits the possibilities of this method of corrosion prevention, is described in detail. The results of tests made with iron and aluminum which was subjected to various representative forms of corrosion are given. The current required per sq. metre and per annum, as determined from these tests, forms a criterion for the cost of cathodic corrosion protection.

Description / Table of Contents: The Influence of the condition of the Surface of Iron upon the Rapidity of Corrosion when buried in SoilExperiments were made to determine the action of various soils sand, clay and loam upon elements Ferough (damp soil) Fe smooth and Ferough (soils I/II) Fesmooth. Current measurements made with element Ferough (damp soil) Fesmooth demonstrated that the reversal of direction of the current, which is dependent on the dampness of the soil, only takes place between very narrow limits. These limits are correlated to the point at which the soil saturated with water goes over to the unsaturated state. The period of time in which the potential difference between two electrodes of varying surface condition (Ferough Fesmooth) placed in soil, disappears after a definite quantity of electrolyte has been added, could be plotted as characteristic curves. Such curves could give information upon the increased soil activity.

Description / Table of Contents: The Basic Causes of “Short” Fractures in MetalsThis article forms a report on various lectures delivered at a Meeting which was held to determine the present extent of knowledge of “short” fractures. The lectures were published in Nos. 415 (1953) of the “Raeder Rundschau”, and dealt exhaustively with the phenomena of “short” fractures of various metals in use in industry, as well as of welded and non-welded components. The lectures also included a survey of the causes of “short” fractures as far as present-day knowledge and the various theories on fractures permitted. In addition, various important questions regarding the various methods of testing metals for their liability to short fracture “are discussed”.

Description / Table of Contents: Contributions to the Theory of Chemical Polarisation during Solution, Separation and Overstressing of MetalsIt was shown that the appearance of surface layers is an essential factor in the chemical polarisation which occurs during the solution, separation, overstressing, inhibitory action, polishing and passivity of metals. The surface layers exercise a restraining effect on the adjustment of the equilibrium of association. These layers are to be found on practically all metals and even in solutions which are capable of dissolving the material of which the layers are composed. They are created by a slowing down in the speed of the diffusion of the ions necessary for the dissolving of the metal in relation to the more rapid formation of layers on the surface of the metal. Such surface layers differ from the usual macromolecular surface layers, such as oxides or scale, rust, salts, etc., in their solubility. Their formation continues at a very high reproductive rate, even though the top layers are removed, and they form an indication of the behaviour of the metal in solutions after it has been subjected to suitable preliminary treatment. In contra-distinction to the irreversible macro-molecular surface layers, the afore-mentioned layers can be regarded as being reversible micro-molecular coverings.

Description / Table of Contents: Preparation and Passivation of light metals for paintingAluminum and magnesium alloys are forming natural oxide films, the strengthening of which is performed by several methods of chemical and electrolytic oxidation. Light metals are also protected by insoluble films of metal salts (phosphate films) in a similar manner as the iron metals. In recent years a new method was developed whereby metal organic protective films are produced by using so-called reaction primers (wash primers). All these protective films are functioning likewise as anticorrosive coatings and as adhesive substrates for paint and lacquer coatings.

Description / Table of Contents: Quartz Bricks and BlocksAt first only hollow-ware (tubes, vessels, etc.) suitable for the needs of the chemical and allied industries, was manufactured from quartz produced by fusing pure quartz sand. The production of solid articles was neglected, since the advantages of the non-porous structure, combined with its heat and chemical resistant properties, which protect quartzware from the action of pulverised, liquid and gaseous agents, was only realised later. It was the initiative of users which led to the production of quartz bricks, which were used in copper works, Siemens-Martin furnaces chemical works and certain specialised electric furnaces. These quartz bricks proved to be far superior to all other materials, but were found to be too small and too expensive. A well-known glassworks was successful in developing quartz bricks suitable for tank-linings, whereby a far superior quality of glass was obtained with less contamination, better colours and no bubbles, knots or streaks. The same type of brick was also found ot be of great use in chemical works. Quartz bricks and blocks were first produced by means of compressed resistance fusion and, later, by solid fusion, but in every case one fusion operation was required to produce one brick or block. Nowadays blocks are produced by cutting up billets of large cross-sectional area, so that they can be produced in large quantities at economic prices for all purposes where their application has proved successful.

Description / Table of Contents: The Prevention of Water Corrosion in RefineriesThe protection of equipment against the corrosive effects of water is problem that affects underground storage tanks, boilers and other equipment. The degree of corrosion depends essentially on factors such as the presence and nature of im-purities in the water, temperatures prevailing in the system and the velocity of the flowing water. The following methods of corrosion prevention are discussed:  -  cathodic protection, organic coatings (paints), metallic coatings, the addition of corrosion retardants, pretreatment of the water (de-aeration) and choice of suitable metals or alloys as materials of construction.
Legierungen.

Description / Table of Contents: The Initial Corrosion of Metals in Contact with Aqueous Solutions at Room TemperaturesThe writer differentiates between two types of initial corrosion, which are characterised either by a rapid, many thousand-fold increase over the initial value (incubation period), or by a very rapid drop in corrosion, which can only be determined by oscillographic (methods at the commencement). In both cases it is assumed that a local element is formed, which can also be proved by evidences of coating.
