    Publication Date: 2023-11-01

Description: This paper presents data on the chemical composition of iron-manganese nodules and associated sediments collected during the 35th voyage of the R/V "Vityaz" in 1962. The samples were made available to the author by Prof, P. L. Bezrukov. Data on the general distribution of manganese nodules at the bottom of the Indian Ocean were already given by P. L. Bezrukov (1962, 1963). Here the author analyzed the geochemistry of nodules samples from seven stations and four samples from the associated sediments. The analysis separates the outer layer of nodules from their apparent internal core.

Description: Iron-manganese concretions, closely related to lacustrine ores and deep sea manganese nodules, are presently forming in different parts of Gulfs of Bothnia and Finland. They can be divided according to physical form into three distinct groups: (1) round pea-shaped concretions, (2) ring-shaped concrections, and (3) flat sheets and crusts of concretionary material. A definite correlation was found to exist between the form i.e. type of concretions and their chemical composition (Mn/Fe ratio). Trace element concentrations were generally rather high, although not as high as in deep sea manganese nodules. X-ray and DTA was used to study the mineralogy and crystal structure of the concretions. Surface concentrations and geographical distribution of the concretions were estimated on the basis of samples, diving observations and echo-grams.

    Publication Date: 2023-08-28
Description: Manganese nodules have attracted considerable attention in recent years as a potential source of Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu and other minor elements. These elements are enriched in manganese nodules relative to igneous rocks, sea-water, and deep-sea clays. The present paper describes methods by which element correlations may be determined with the electron-probe, and summarizes the results obtained by electron-beam scanning and specimen traversing. The results obtained in the present electron-probe investigation of manganese nodules may be summarized as follows: (l) The iron concentration fluctuates whereas the manganese concentration is relatively uniform throughout a manganese nodule, hbing slightly higher where iron is low. (2) There is a distinct correlation between Fe, Co, Ti, and Ca. (3) There is pronounced element coherence between Xi, Cu, Zn, and Mg, and between K and Ba. These elements are enriched with Mn and Al in regions of a nodule where the iron concentration is low. (4) The pronounced inter element relationships suggest that isomorphic substitution is an important factor controlling minor element distribution in manganese nodules. The ions Ni2+. Cu2+, Zn2+, Mg2+, K+ and Ba2+ substitute for Mn2+ in the "manganite" phases, Co(III) occurs with Fe(III) in hydrated iron oxide phases and Ti(IV) in delta-MnO2.

Description: Microscopic and electron probe examination of some manganese nodules show that they consist of segregations of manganese-iron oxides in an interstitial material almost free of manganese but rich in iron and silicates. The segregations are widely spaced in the volcanic cores of the nodules but become more abundant towards their outer crusts where they form the centres of linked polygons of interstitial materials. Most of the minor elements are concentrated in the segregations compared to the interstitial materials. It is suggested that the structures observed result partly from solution and reprecipitation of elements in the original volcanic cores of the nodules and partly from the replacement and coating of these cores by manganese-iron oxides precipitated from sea water.

Description: Seven manganese nodules, eight ferromanganiferous shales from the Cretaceous Wai Bua Formation of Timor, and a pelagic limestone with four ferromanganese enriched layers from the Middle Eocene of Timor have been analysed. The nodules are compared with modern deep-sea nodules, and the ferromanganiferous shales are contrasted with relatively shallow marine manganiferous shales. The conclusion is reached that these rocks from Timor were probably deposited in a bathypelagic environment. There is a total absence of any indication that volcanic material has contributed to these deposits. The chemical composition of the ferromanganiferous rocks are discussed and some indications of biogenic influences are noted. The Middle Eocene pelagic limestone is compared with a similar modern sediment described from the Easter Island Rise in the Pacific.

Description: Although various models have been proposed to explain the origin of manganese nodules (see Goldberg and Arrhenius), two major hypotheses have received extensive attention. One concept suggests that manganese nodules form as the result of interaction between submarine volcanic products and sea water. The common association of manganese nodules with volcanic materials constitutes the main evidence for this theory. The second theory involves a direct inorganic precipitation of manganese from sea water. Goldberg and Arrhenius view this process as the oxidation of divalent manganese to tetravalent manganese by oxygen under the catalytic action of particulate iron hydroxides. Manganese accumulation by the Goldberg and Arrhenius theory would be a relatively slow and comparatively steady process, whereas Bonatti and Nayudu believe manganese nodule formation takes place subsequent to the eruption of submarine volcanoes by the acidic leaching of lava.

Description: Manganese nodules, similar in composition to other freshwater and shallow marine nodules, occur on the sediment surface of green bay and northern lake Michigan. Samples have been analyzed for their iron, manganese, calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, inorganic carbon, organic carbon, and total nitrogen content. The nodules average 20% iron and 6% manganese. the trace metal content (copper, zinc, cobalt, and nickel) of the samples is considerably lower than that of marine material. Interstitial water is one of the major contributors of manganese and iron for the growth of nodules in lake Michigan. Cores of green bay sediment show an inverse relationship between sedimentary and interstitial manganese with the sedimentary manganese increasing to a maximum at or near the sediment-water interface. Sedimentary iron remains fairly constant throughout the length of these cores while interstitial iron decreases slightly toward the sediment-water interface. in addition, lake water may be more than a passive contributor of iron and manganese. There are indications that as much as one-half of the manganese found in lake water is particulate. The source of this material is believed to be the iron deposits of the Canadian shield that have been subsequently leached of manganese and iron.

Description: Manganese nodules collected from four sites in the N.W. Indian Ocean by R.R.S. Discovery have been analysed for a range of elements. At two of the sites, samples were collected from two morphological populations, at one of these sites each population being a distinct chemical population also. In addition, considerable differences have been observed in the composition of morphologically similar modules from sites a few miles apart. The information obtained is of significance in any consideration of the genesis of the nodules and could have practical implications in the event that manganese nodules become a potential source of manganese and other metallic elements.

Comptes Rendus de la Société Géologique de Finlande, 39, 161-172, https://www.geologinenseura.fi/sites/geologinenseura.fi/files/bt_229.pdf
    Publication Date: 2023-08-28
Description: Fe-Mn-concretions of a spheroidal type were found according to electron probe determinations to consist of alternating iron- and manganese-rich layers. This pattern was ascribed to seasonal variations in the physico-chemical conditions governing the precipitation of the hydrous oxides of iron and manganese. Calculations based on the rhythmic growth of the concretions investigated gave a mean accumulation rate of 0.15-0.20 mm/yr. The rather high phosphorus content (average 3.5 % P2O5) of the concretions was found to be concentrated in the iron-rich layers, probably as a result of the scavenging effect of ferric hydroxide.

Description: In October 1964, a detailed geophysical and sampling survey was made of the central part of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge between 22° and 23° north latitude. The results indicate a large difference in age between the relief of the crest and that of the flanks of the Ridge and suggest that the crest portion is very young. Detailed surveys of two sediment-filled valleys on the upper western flank of the Ridge reveal different sedimentary sequences in the two valleys and indicate the probable existence of a locally controlled depositional regime and a significant local supply of sediment.

    Publication Date: 2023-08-28
Description: The petrology of the mid-Atlantic ridge between 22° and 23°N latitude may be typical of those portions of the ridge characterized by a linear topography parallel to the axis, a well-developed median valley, and an absence of volcanic cones. Submarine basalt lavas dredged at fifteen stations on the crest of the ridge are of three eruptive facies, all derived from essentially identical magmas; (1) pillow lavas, (2) sideromelane-rich tuffs, and (3) massive, mainly holocrystalline basalts. This association is well known from continental exposures of ancient submarine lavas. Chemically, the lavas are oceanic tholeiites and thus support the view that these low-potassium olivine basalts are by far the dominant eruptive on the deep-sea floor. In the 22° area, they are probably the product of voluminous fissure eruptions. The oceanic tholeiite is evidently the counterpart of the continental flood basalts, but it differs compositionally from these, especially in a lower potassium content. As a further characterization of the basalts, seven new analyses of major, minor, and trace elements are presented. Post-cooling hydrothermal metamorphism under some overburden has transformed some of these basalts into greenschists and lower-grade metamorphic rocks. New data indicate that faulting and shearing along the median valley combined with the introduction of hot, probably saline solutions were major agents in the metamorphism.

Description: During Discovery Cruise 11, April-May 1966, eleven hauls were made on the crest and on the southern facing slope of Palmer Ridge in the Peake Deep area in order to fill out the information gained last year. Limestones were collected ranging in age from lowest Eocene through to Upper Tertiary, and several hauls successfully sampled the basement beneath these, producing weathered basalts, metamorphosed basalts and dolerites. In Peake Deep on the north slope of Palmer Ridge hard Eocene sediments were core sampled near the base of the slope but no cores could be got near the top.

Contributions of the Sedimentology Research Laboratory, Florida State University, 19, 99 pp, https://ntrl.ntis.gov/NTRL/dashboard/searchResults/titleDetail/PB177287.xhtml
    Publication Date: 2023-10-04
Description: An extensive deposit of ferromanganese concretions has been investigated in the Southern Ocean around Antarctica, a region of particular interest in that it contains most of the parameters thought to be of importance in concretion formation. The physical and chemical properties of 93 concretions from 62 stations have been analyzed for possible interpretations as to the elemental source and the distributional characteristics as possible responses to respective parameters. It was found that four classes of concretionary types best represent the physical characteristics of concretions recovered within this area and that their morphology may be representative of the rate of formation and the proximity to the source of elemental constituents. It is suggested that the major source of concentrated elements in Southern Ocean ferromanganese concretions is submarine volcanism, with the dominant volcanism occurring along the Pacific-Antarctic Ridge. There is some evidence that connects periodic concretion growth and distribution characteristics to possible glacial and inter-glacial periods.

    Publication Date: 2023-11-25
Description: Vertical distribution of abundance and biomass of upper interzonal copepods Calanus cristatus, C. plumchrus, Eucalanus bungii, Metridia ochotensis and M. pacifica have been studied in the whole depth range of their occurrence. These species comprise 55 per cent of total plankton biomass in the 0-4000 m layer. The major part (90% of the population) of C. cristatus inhabit depths are above 3000 m, and of the other species - above 750-1000 m. Feeding of juveniles proceeds in the surface euphotic zone, and then adolescent animals descend to deep water. At depth 1000-2000 m they make up 〉40%, and at 2000-3000 m, about 20% of total biomass of plankton inhabiting these depths. Interzonal species serve as a food reserve for predatory deep-sea animals and as a close connection between the surface and deep-water communities that makes it possible to regard these communities as parts of a single biocoenosis.
