    Publication Date: 2023-08-28
Description: Ferromanganese concretions from Grand Lake and Ship Harbour Lake in Nova Scotia and Mosque Lake in Ontario are most common in water 0.5 to 2 m deep. X-ray diffraction studies show the ferromanganese portions of the concretions to he amorphous. Petrographic and electron probe studies of the ferromanganese material reveal chemical banding of iron and manganese. Bulk chemical analyses indicate that the Fe:Mn ratios of concretions from different sites within a single lake are similar, whereas concretions from different lakes have characteristic Fe:Mn ratios. Trace element concs are different in different lakes and are generally several orders of magnitude less than those of oceanic nodules.

In:  Supplement to: Harriss, Robert C; Crocket, J H; Stainton, M (1968): Palladium, iridium and gold in deep-sea manganese nodules. Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta, 32(10), 1049-1056, https://doi.org/10.1016/0016-7037(68)90107-5
    Publication Date: 2023-08-28
Description: The abundance and distribution of palladium, iridium and gold has been determined in manganese nodules from widely varying locations and geological environments within the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans. The distribution of these metals is characterized by a lack of distinct regional variations, homogeneous distribution within an individual nodule, and a lack of any correlation with variations in major and other trace elements in the nodules. Assuming that all the iridium in the manganese nodules is of extraterrestrial origin, an upper limit on the mass accretion rate of interplanetary matter to the earth is calculated to be 60 tons/day over the surface of the earth.

    Publication Date: 2023-08-28
Description: Studies by optical microscopy, x-ray diffraction, and electron probe techniques of ferromanganese concretions from three Canadian lakes reveal chemical banding of amorphous hydrated iron and manganese oxides. The average ratio of iron to manganese in concretions from these lakes varies from 0.43 to 2.56. The concentrations of cobalt, nickel, copper, and lead are one to two orders of magnitude below those reported for oceanic ferromanganese concretions.

Description: Manganese nodules were selected from various areas of the Pacific, Indian and Atlantic ocean. They were analysed using a mercury vapour discharge technique. The minimum precision of the technique as determined by multiple analyses of individual samples was +- 12 per cent of the amount present.

Notes: A 20 month study of some effects of highway construction on water quality was conducted during construction of Interstate 10 at Tallahassee, Florida. Highway construction resulted in significant increases in turbidity, suspended solids, total phosphorus, and dissolved silicon in downstream waters despite use of recommended procedures for erosion control. Highway construction did not result in significant increases in dissolved phosphorus or nitrogen.
