Notes: Summary The catecholamine content of adrenergic nerves in the hearts of albinotic rats, estimated by use of the formaldehyde-induced fluorescence method, exhibits no alteration following severe stress (swimming for 1 h; water temperature about 19° C). After premedieation with Pertofran (25 mg/kg 4–6 h before sacrifice) the catecholamine content of myocardial nerves of both ventricles is lowered already under normal living conditions, while the fluorescence of the nerves of blood vessels, atria, specific musculature, epicard and the endocard respectively is of the same intensity or even more prominent. Combining Pertofran premedication and swimming for 1 h leads to a further decrease of the fluorescence intensity and diminishes the number of fluorescent adrenergic nerves in the ventricular myocardium. Vascular nerves and the nerves of epicardial and endocardial plexus show a somewhat weaker, but still bright fluorescence, and some extramedullary chromaffin cells have lost all their catecholamines. — Adrenalectomy 6 weeks before sacrifice has no visible influence on the results.
