    Notizen: Theoretical solutions for unsteady flow of a three constant Oldroyd fluid and a second order fluid under several different flow conditions of practical interest are obtained. The response of these fluids to suddenly applied external force is investigated in each case. Without using the stick-slip boundary condition at the wall, it is possible to show that pressure oscillation occurs with both fluids under a certain case.

    Notizen: Antioxidants such as bisphenol A (BPA) have long been recommended for retention of physical properties on oven-aging of PVC plasticized with certain plasticizers. We have shown how BPA inhibits oxidative fragmentation of plasticizers such as diisodecyl adipate (DIDA) and thus decreases apparent volatility, and how it improves retention of modulus, elongation, and low temperature flexibility. Low concentrations are more beneficial than either zero or high concentrations, especially on longer aging. At higher concentrations, although the plasticizer is retained in the PVC, it becomes less efficient at low temperature, and low-temperature flex is impaired while elongation is preserved. DIDA exudes during oven-aging unless oxidation occurs to prevent it. When BPA is present, exudation is worst at the most efficient concentrations of antioxidant. This appears to be the normal incompatibility of DIDA at 105°C which is permitted by the antioxidant. On oxidation, the dielectric constant of DIDA rises into the 4-8 range, signifying compatibility with PVC, and the DIDA does not exude.

    Notizen: Measurements of melt viscosity on samples of polytetrafluoroethylene of different molecular weight were carried out at 360°C by means of tensile creep tests in the linear viscoelasticity range. The apparent activation energy for viscous flow in the range between 330° and 380°C was estimated to be 20 kcal/mole. A value of about 7,500 was also determined for the average molecular weight between entanglement points (Me), from the equilibrium compliance (De). Melt viscosity data were compared with zero strength time (ZST) values and a linear correlation was found on a bilogarithmic scale. The dependence of ZST on the applied stress and temperature was also studied and the results are discussed on the basis of Bueche's theory on the creep at rupture above the glass transition temperature.

    Notizen: Optical microscopy has been used to illustrate various types of discontinuities, or flaws found within acrylic polymer fibers and to determine the distribution of such internal flaws along the length of the fiber. Flaws are comprised of particulate inclusions and voids. The internal flaw distributions approximate a Poisson type for point flaws, but significant variation is found in mean flaw concentrations from 0.03 to 2.3 flaws/mm. Both flaw concentration and flaw-free length distributions have been used to predict, for random selection of test lengths, the probability of avoiding a flaw with respect to gauge length (P versus Lg plots).

    Notizen: It has been shown that the resistance of certain polyethylene sulfides to thermal degradation can be markedly improved by the addition of small amounts of metal dithiocarbamates, thioureas, or diphenyl acetylene together with a suitable carbodiimide. The extent of degradation, as indicated by the concurrent changes in polymer melt viscosity in the temperature range 220°-250°C, was dramatically reduced, in particular, by a stabilizer comprised of 4% hexamethylenebis(tert-butyl)carbodiimide and 2% diphenylacetylene. At 250°C polyethylene sulfide (Dabco initiated) was stable in the melt viscometer for a period of 8-10 min and the resulting extrudate showed little sign of discoloration. The detailed mechanism of stabilizer action cannot be put forward at this stage because of uncertainty regarding the mode of polymer degradation which could occur by radical or ionic processes.

    Notizen: The effect of monomer and initiator feeds to each of a series of continuous stirred tank reactors (CSTR) on the molecular weight distributions, average molecular weight, polymer production rate, and initiator and monomer conversions is studied for the termination-free polymerization system. For initiator feed concentrations less than 0.001 mole/liter, the distribution becomes narrower as the polymer progresses from reactor 1 to reactor 3. But for concentrations of initiator of 0.01 mole/liter, the distribution may be broadened from reactor 1 to reactor 3. The broadening of the distribution results in the production of a lower molecular weight polymer.

Les polymères attaqués présentent une très mauvaises tabilité thermique. Les polymères préparés avec un systéme alkylaluminum-titanate de butyle ne sont que fort peu attaqués par l'alkylaluminum et leur stabilité thermique est relativement bonne. Les résidus de titanate, lorsque leur teneur dépasse 100 ppm, inhibent l'accélération de la dégradation thermique.

    Notizen: A systems approach is applied to the analysis of chromatogram resolution dispersion, or zone broadening, in gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Three possible sources of dispersion are considered; these are: the packed columns; the empty tubing between pump and columns, columns and detector, etc.; and the detection system, viz., the differential refractometer cell. It is shown that empty tubing can contribute significantly to the degree of dispersion and to skewness of elution curves and that this dispersion should depend on molecular weight of solute (polymer) and diameter and length of the tubing. The importance of dispersion in the empty tubing is compared with that in the packed columns and refractometer cell.

    Notizen: Experiments coupled with a systems analysis were conducted on chromatogram dispersion, or zone broadening, in gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Three components of a Waters Associates Model 200 chromatograph, each of which is a potential cause of dispersion, were considered; these are: the packed column, with extraparticle dispersion only; the empty tubing, between pump and columns, columns and detector, etc.; and the detection system, viz., the differential refractometer cell. Toluene solvent was used and the solutes whose dispersion was studied included orthodichlorobenzene (ODCB) and narrow-molecular-weight polystyrene standards having molecular weights of 900, 20,400, 51,000, 97,200, and 160,000. Nonporous glass beads, 50 μ in diameter, were used as column packing. Two diameters, 1 mm and 0.5 mm, of stainless steel tubing were studied. In addition to the usual rectangular pulse sample injection, a step input mode for solute introduction was also used. The empty tubing was found to contribute significantly to the degree of dispersion and to skewness of elution curves. Anomalous bimodal characteristics of the elution curves were also observed which could only be ascribed to the empty tubing. These phenomena depended markedly on parameters such as tube diameter and length, and solute concentration and molecular weight. Dispersion in the packed column, although important, was found to be symmetrical (Gaussian) and less sensitive to these parameters than in the empty tubing, especially with respect to molecular weight. Dispersion in the cell was believed to be insignificant relative to the packed column and empty tubing.

    Notizen: An analysis is given of the principal thermodynamic factors that influence the distribution of an ion between a macroscopically homogeneous polymer phase and a second homogeneous phase and a general method is proposed for the computation of the equilibrium ion sorptions in well-defined model systems. Particular attention is paid to the sorption of ions by polymers containing ionizable groups and the method is used to clarify some of the current problems in the theoretical explanation of the mechanism of sorption of acid dye anions by polyamide fibers. The method is applicable in principle to any dyeing system in which the fiber phase may be regarded at equilibrium as a macroscopically homogeneous, equipotential volume.

    Notizen: An infrared spectrophotometer was calibrated for the quantitative determination of butene-1 in copolymers with propene, and of butene-1 and limited concentrations of octene-1 in terpolymers with propene. 14C-tagged standards were used for the butene-1 calibration while standards for the octene-1 calibration were prepared from a homopolymer by blending. Films were pressed from the standards, and the absorbance per mil thickness was correlated with composition. For our instrument, wt-% C4 = 510 (A/mil) at 766 cm-1, and wt-% C8 = 539 (A/mil) at 725 cm-1. No special steps were required to eliminate the effects of crystallinity.

    Notizen: A solution-fractionation technique has been developed for water-soluble (molar substitution, MS, ca. 4) hydroxypropylcellulose (HPC), utilizing mixtures of anhydrous ethanol (solvent) and n-heptane (nonsolvent) of varying composition. Solubility is primarily an inverse function of chain length, species of highest molecular weight being soluble only in solvent mixtures richest in ethanol. Fractionation data indicate HPC substitution is fairly uniform, although there is a tendency for shorter chains to be more highly substituted than long ones. Some control over the degree of variation is possible by changes in processing conditions. Molecular weight and molecular weight distribution reflect the properties of the cellulose employed in sample preparation and the use or omission of deliberate degradation for viscosity control. A sample of HPC ([η] = 4.2; MS = 4.4) was separated into seven fractions of approximately equal weight and the average molecular weight (Mw), root mean square radius of gyration, and second virial coefficient of each of these fractions in ethanol were determined by light scattering, while molecular weight distributions were investigated by gel permeation chromatography in tetrahydrofuran. The relation between intrinsic viscosity and degree of polymerization (DP) was found to be [η] = 7.2×10-3DPw0.90. A comparison of hydrodynamic and configurational parameters for HPC in ethanol with those for hydroxyethylcellulose (HEC) in water indicates these two polymers behave very similarly in solution. In both systems the ratio of the mean square end-to-end unperturbed molecular chain length (R02) to DP diminishes with increasing molecular weight, reaching a minimum at a DPw of approximately 3000. The ratio [(R02)/(Rf2)]z½, where (Rf2)½ is the root mean square end-to-end distance for 1,4′-polysaccharides assuming free rotation of the chain units, also diminishes with increasing molecular weight, reaching a limiting value of 3.5. This relatively high ratio indicates considerable rigidity in the coiled molecule and is believed to be at least partially the result of intramolecular hydrogen bonding.

    Notizen: The peel strength and tensile shear strength of polyester hot-melt adhesives on metals coated with epoxy resins are affected by four characteristics of the polyester: (1) inherent viscosity, (2) glass transition temperature (Tg), (3) degree of crystallinity, and (4) melting point. The inherent viscosity affects the strength, toughness, and crystallinity of the adhesive. The Tg and degree of crystallinity affect the low-temperature adhesive properties; the peel strength is relatively low when the Tg is appreciably above the use temperature. The Tg, degree of crystallinity, and melting point affect the high-temperature adhesive properties. A hot-melt adhesive with high peel and tensile shear strengths from 0° to 120°C is the polyester of 1,4-butanediol and trans-1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid.

    Notizen: Several sets of porous cellulose acetate membranes were made using the same casting solution composition and gelation conditions but varying the casting solution temperature and solvent evaporation conditions. The films were tested in reverse osmosis experiments at 250 psig using aqueous feed solutions containing 3500 ppm NaCl. The results show that the product rate obtained at a given level of solute separation is independent of evaporation time in the range tested and, for a given casting solution composition, the temperature of the casting solution and conditions of solvent evaporation during film formation together constitute an important interconnected variable governing the porous structure of the resulting membranes. These results offer a new approach to the problem of developing more productive reverse osmosis membranes and have led to a new class of porous cellulose acetate membranes capable of giving product rates 100% to 150% higher than those of the best membranes reported, at any given level of solute separation under the experimental conditions used. These results are of practical importance in low-pressure reverse osmosis applications.

    Notizen: The preparation of isotactic and syndiotactic 1,4-polypentadienes with a cis content of at least 70%-75% using i-Bu2AlH/Ti(i-OPr)4 and AlEtCl2/thiophene/Co(acetylacetonate)2 catalysts, respectively, is reported. Physical characterization of the vulcanizates, prepared by a common recipe, involving infrared analysis, DTA, simple stress-strain and swelling measurements, and dynamic mechanical measurements over a frequency range of 2 decades and temperature range of -60°C to +20°C indicated that no isomerization had taken place during vulcanization and that stereoregularity of the polymer chains affected the resultant cure: the isotactic form was found to have a greater crosslink density than the syndiotactic form. Master curves covering an extended frequency range were constructed from the reduced dynamic mechanical data and the calculated quantities - thermal expansion coefficients of free volume and the fractional free volumes at the glass transition temperatures - agree with the accepted values. Glass transition temperatures of the isotactic and syndiotactic polymers are -37°C and -42°C, respectively, and for their vulcanizates, -33°C and -40°C, respectively.

    Notizen: A new, graphic method of the resolution of a chromatogram into its component peaks is presented. From a mathematical description of the chromatogram of a monodispersed sample, a practical method of peak resolution of a multicomponent sample is derived. From this, the constituents may be characterized as to size and their weight fractions determined. As an example the final product in the synthesis of N,N-diglycidyl tribromoaniline is analyzed graphically and compared with results obtained using the du Pont 310 Curve Resolver. The agreement appears to be quite satisfactory.

    Notizen: NMR analysis of the chain ends of samples of poly(vinyl chloride) prepared using a Ti(OBu)4-alkylaluminum system in CCl4 reveals that the mechanism of the formation of free radicals depends on whether the alkylaluminum used is chlorinated or not. In the first case, some of the radicals are reactive in the initiation step of the polymerization, while in the latter case theses radicals first undergo transfer to CCl4, then the CCl3· formed initiates the polymerization of vinyl chloride. The poly(vinyl chloride) radicals are chiefly stopped by transfer to CCl4 (chlorine abstraction) or to alkylaluminum (hydrogen abstraction). In transfer reactions between growing radicals and alkylaluminum, the radicals formed have to react with CCl4 before reinitiating the polymerization of vinyl chloride.

    Notizen: The dependence of the rate of emulsion polymerization of methyl methacrylate on the concentration of sodium dodecyl sulfate has been studied using the Mx+-N2H5OH system as initiator (where Mx+ is Cu2+, Fe3+, and Mn3+). It was found that the rate dependence on soap concentration was different for each initiator. The extent of this variation was: \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ {\rm Rp }\alpha {\rm }\left[ {{\rm Soap}} \right]^{0.18 - 0.55} $$\end{document} The variation is large enough to show that the dependence of the rate of emulsion polymerization on soap concentration is not simply a function of the solubility of the monomer in water, as had been suggested by Gershberg.

    Notizen: The carbonates and oxides of zinc and cadmium polymerize propylene sulfide to elastomeric materials, but with the addition of ammonia low molecular weight polymers are produced. The effect of the ammonia is to react with some of the propylene sulfide to give aminopropanethiol, which will itself polymerize monomer by a stepwise reaction or, after reaction with the metal carbonate, form a metal bis(aminopropanethiolate) which is an active initiator. Chemical and spectroscopic examination of these polymers shows them to be essentially bifunctional, with one NH2 and one SH terminal group. There is, however, evidence to suggest that further reaction of monomer occurs with the terminal amine groupings to give polyfunctional compounds. From the relative proportions of ammonia, zinc carbonate, and monomer, the rate of polymerization, molecular weight, and degree of endgroup coordination with catalyst residue can be controlled as desired. Due to the highly reactive endgroups, the polymers are readily crosslinked with epoxy resins, aziridinyl compounds, and hexamethoxymethylene melamine to give useful products exhibiting high solvent resistance.

The results illustrate the existence of mobile and immobile sorbed layers and the governing influence of surface flow in gas-phase reverse osmosis separations. Preshrunk freeze-dried porous cellulose acetate membranes seem to offer a practical means of utilizing the reverse osmosis process for recovering helium from natural gas and separating sulfur dioxide from flue gases.

    Notizen: Gamma radiation-induced conductivity and permanent conductivity effects produced by high doses of 2 MeV electrons have been measured in two polyimidazopyrrolone polymers. Radiation-induced conductivity levels are small compared to those found in many common insulating polymers. Permanent increases in dark conductivity produced by accumulated doses of 5×109 rad at temperatures up to 300°C are not sufficient to inhibit ultraviolet-visible photoconductivity. High doses of 2 MeV electrons (5×109 rad) under the same temperature conditions produce no discernible effect on dielectric properties. Both radiation-induced conductivity and permanent dark conductivity increases were much smaller in one polymer (BTDA-DAB), suggesting the possibility of optimizing radiation resistance in this class of polymers by means of chemical structure variation. The radiolytic and thermal stability reported previously for this class of polymers has been generally confirmed, with particular reference to electrical properties.

    Notizen: In the polymerization of isoprene with the i-Bu3Al/TiCl4 catalyst at the mole ratio of 1.0 the diphenyl ether adduct of the i-Bu3Al showed no effect on the catalyst efficiency. The ether did not improve the low efficiency of the catalyst at ratios slightly above 1.0, but below 1.0 it brought the catalyst activity up to optimum. The ether compensated for the deleterious effects upon the catalyst of low amounts of water present in the isoprene solution in hexane. At the Al/Ti mole ratio slightly above 1.0, water and diphenyl ether were found to act synergistically in raising catalyst efficiency. In addition, at or close to optimal operating Al/Ti mole ratios the diphenyl ether had a very marked effect in improving the polymerization rate. Polymer properties were generally unaffected by use of the ether-coordinated catalyst.

    Notizen: A rheological study has been performed to characterize the low molecular weight butyl polymers using a couette coni-cylindrical viscometer. The bulk viscosity was determined as a function of temperature, weight-average molecular weight, viscosity-average molecular weight, and shear rate. The temperature dependence of the viscosity, while adequately represented by the Williams, Landel, and Ferry equation, is best described by an Arrhenius equation for the temperature range investigated. The viscosity is shown to vary with the 3.5th power of the weight-average molecular weight above a critical molecular weight and to the 1st power below this molecular weight. Although the ratio of the weight-average molecular weight to the number-average molecular weight usually affects the flow properties of polymers, this was not true for the polymers investigated. The bulk viscosity was found to be independent of the molecular weight distribution for the temperature and shear rate range studied. It has been shown that a definite relationship exists between the bulk viscosity and the viscosity-average molecular weight as determined by dilute solution viscosity. A mathematical model has been developed to relate these two parameters as a function of temperature and shear rate.

The kinetic scheme of all pairs fitted the improved scheme of copolymerization, taking into account the effect of the penultimate unit. The Alfrey-Price Q and e values were calculated. Using the modified Taft equation, log (1/r1) = ρ*σ* + δEs, it was found that the relative reactivities of the ester monomers toward the polystyryl radical were correlated by the polar substituent constants σ* of the ester alkyl groups (ρ* = 0.14) and not by their steric substituent constants Es (δ = 0.008).

    Notizen: The present investigation covers the isothermal stress-strain-birefringence behavior of various polybutadienes between -30°C and 110°C. Birefringence measurements were also made under constant stress as a function of temperature in the low temperature region between -30°C and -120°C. The polybutadienes studied were two high cis-1,4 (prepared by different catalysts), a linear medium cis, and an emulsion polybutadiene. At temperatures at which the photoelasticity theory could be applied, the segmental polarizability anisotropy, its temperature dependence, and other parameters associated with an elastic polymeric network were determined. The influence of the degree of crosslinking was examined. At the low temperatures, microstructure was shown to have a pronounced effect on the photoelastic properties, the crystallization phenomena, and the glass-rubber transitions.

    Notizen: The effects of casting solution composition and evaporation period on the performance of resulting porous cellulose acetate membranes have been studied, and the results are discussed in terms of casting solution structure, solvent evaporation rate during film formation, and the film shrinkage temperature profile. The development of Batch 316-type porous cellulose acetate membranes is reported. At 90% level of solute separation and feed flow conditions corresponding to a mass transfer coefficient of 45 × 10-4 cm/sec, the productivities of the above membranes are 21.5 gallons/day/ft2 at 250 psig using 3500 ppm of NaCl in the feed, and 53.9 gallons/day/ft2 at 600 psig using 5000 ppm of NaCl in the feed.

    Notizen: The decay of free radicals in irradiated PMMA subjected to high pressures has been studied by the method of ESR. The rate constants and activation energies has been determined for the decay of free radicals at the pressures of 5000 and 10,000 atm over the temperature range of 100-170°C. It has been found that the rate of decay was reduced essentially by the effect of high pressure. The mechanism of the decay of free radicals in solid polymers is being discussed. The important influence of the motion of macromolecule segments on the course of radical reactions in solid phase is printed out.

    Notizen: The effect of structural and morphologic modifications of styrene and fluorinated styrene polymers on their internal friction was studied by means of a free-oscillating torsional pendulum at temperatures from 300° to 4.2°K and frequencies of 1 to 2 Hz. Atactic and isotactic polystyrene gave the previously observed δ and β′ loss peaks at 38° and 100°K, respectively. These losses decrease in intensity with crystallinity in isotactic polystyrene but remain relatively unchanged in uniaxially drawn atactic polymer. Atactic polypentafluorostyrene showed an intense δ loss peak at 52°K and a broad shoulder around 100°K, which extends toward the β′ relaxation. In poly-α,β,β-trifluorostyrene, the δ loss peak is largely suppressed, the logarithmic decrement showing only broad maxima at 22° and 100°K. Plasticization of atactic polystyrene with 2% mineral oil gives rise to a sharp loss maximum at 100°K, which does not occur in the pure atactic polymer.

    Notizen: Master curve methods or superposition techniques are rather widely used for characterizing the steady-state flow behavior of polymers. One method, developed by Sabia,1 is examined with respect to its applicability and limitations. In the original development of the method, it was assumed that a universal curve (master curve) exists. Based on this, a theoretical explanation was presented for the sample parameters. Such explanation became dubious because experimental evidence was found later to nullify the master curve assumption.2,3 In this paper, Sabia's method is treated as a curve-fitting procedure to represent observed data. In order to do so, the shear rates of observation must be limited to two or two and a half decades. Also, the range of shear rates are defined from 1 to 1000 sec.-1 The results of curve fitting and molecular interpretation of the parameters are presented.

    Notizen: Gelation of poly(ethylene terephthalate) by heating at 263°-300°C was investigated. Under nitrogen flow, crosslinks were scarcely formed. However in air, degradation and crosslinking were common, and these were accelerated by purging gaseous and sublimable degradation products out of the system with a stream of air. The main component of the sublimate was terephthalic acid. Infusible and insoluble gel was treated with methanol at 260°C, and then the methanolysis products were separated into two parts. The methanol-insoluble part exhibited a polyene structure with ester groups, and the methanol-soluble part contained dimethyl terephthalate, ethylene glycol, and some 1,2,4-butanetriol. To clarify the relation between the crosslinking and the formation of vinyl ester groups, the degradation of vinyl methyl terephthalate was studied. Thermoxidative degradation of linear polyesters other than poly(ethylene terephthalate) was also studied. Poly(ethylene isophthalate) and poly(ethylene sebacate) were easily gelated. However, poly(trimethylene terephthalate) and poly(neopentyl terephthalate) were scarcely gelated. The primary reaction leading to crosslinking is assumed as follows. At first, the random scission of polyester chain may take place forming carboxylic acids, vinyl esters, aldehydes, etc. After accumulation of vinyl esters to some extent, vinyl polymerization of the esters takes place and network structures are formed.

    Notizen: The reaction of a radiofrequency-excited oxygen plasma with the surfaces of cured and uncured polymethylsiloxane produces intense hydroxylation of the surface region as followed by FMIR spectroscopy. Characteristic infrared features indicative of intraor intermolecular hydrogen bonding are evident. Plasma oxidation differs markedly from thermal oxidation processes. Reactions of polymethylsiloxane with nitrogen and air plasmas were also investigated and compared to corona reactions of oxygen, nitrogen, and air. In air corona, nitrogen moieties appear to be introduced. The behavior of polymethylsiloxane surfaces in oxidizing acids is also described.

    Notizen: The principles and design of a gas permeability measuring instrument based on thermal conductivity measurement are described. Since the thermal conductivity of a gas mixture is dependent upon the partial pressure fraction rather than absolute partial pressure of sample gas, and the permeation rate of reference and sample gases through polymer films differe considerably, a pressure-equalizing device is necessary for the accurate measurement of gas permeability. The three types of measurements - integral, differential (flow method), and decay rate measurements - can be used with the instrument. The results of permeability constants and diffusion constants obtained with the methods showed good agreement with the conventional vacuum-type method. With proper selection of methods, the instrument can measure the gas flux through the range of 10-10 to 10-3 cm3 (STP)/cm2 sec cm Hg. Some advantages of the methods are discussed.

    Notizen: The adsorption of poly(vinyl acetate) from benzene solution onto cellulosic materials having various porous structures was measured in an attempt to investigate the role of the pore size distribution in the sorption process. The variety of cellulose porous structures was obtained by combinations of different swelling agents - water, ethylenediamine, sodium hydroxide solution - with different subsequent drying treatments. The pore structure analysis was based on benzene desorption isotherms. The porosity of cellulose is responsible for selective adsorption of the smaller macromolecules from an unfractionated polymer solution. The amount of sorbed polymer increases when the polymer solution contains a greater fraction of lower molecular weight polymer. Only the pores above a certain size are accessible to the polymer. The amount of polymer sorbed is proportional to the area of such pores but is otherwise independent of the effects produced by swelling pretreatments.

    Notizen: The effects of kind of acid and irradiation of ultraviolet light on the graft copolymerization of methyl methacrylate onto cellulose with adsorbed ceric ion were investigated. Irrespective of ultraviolet light irradiation, the amount of reduced ceric ion in the reaction systems was increased in the order HCl 〉 HClO4 〉 HNO3 〉 H2SO4, and the number of grafts formed was increased in the order HClO4 〉 HNO3 〉 HCl 〉 H2SO4. Thus, it was definitely observed that the graft copolymerization is affected by the kind of acid. Ultraviolet light remarkably accelerated the reduction of ceric ion adsorbed on cellulose in the various acid mediums, but decreased the efficiency of graft formation. The most favorable results for the formation of grafts were obtained in the system in which HClO4 and ultraviolet irradiation was employed. A combination of H2SO4 and ultraviolet irradiation resulted in the lowest per cent grafting and average molecular weight of grafts. It was found that H2SO4 characteristically dissolves out ceric ion adsorbed into an aqueous solution and accelerates the formation of homopolymer.

    Notizen: Using existing literature data on the rate of a bulk polymerization of styrene in a batch reaction carried to high conversion, it is mathematically demonstrated that there is a clear possibility of the existence of multiple steady states induced by viscosity effects in isothermal continuous stirred tank reactors. In solutions of high viscosity, the rate of free-radical polymerization increases with conversion, reaching a peak at very high viscosity, then falling off rapidly. Given this sort of behavior, it is demonstrated mathematically that steady-state mass balance solutions are possible at three levels of conversion. The lower and higher steady states are stable while the middle steady-state condition is shown to be necessarily unstable. This multiplicity of steady states with its particular problems of stability is analogous to the much studied phenomena of temperature stability. It is closely related to the problems of concentration stability characteristic of autocatalytic and heterogeneous catalytic reactions. This multiple steady-state problem is qualitatively discussed in relation to reactor stability, control, and optimization.

    Notizen: 1,1-Dihydroperfluorobutyl acrylate was prepared and grafted onto cellulose fabric by means of γ-ray preirradiation to produce oil and water repellency. A 2% grafting was sufficient to impart oil and water repellency to cellulose fabric. In the case of 19.1% or 29.4% grafted fabrics, the grafting decreased rapidly with laundering, and the laundered fabric which possessed no oil and water repellency still had about 10% grafting of the perfluoro compound. Thus, the apparent graft polymerization takes place both on the surface and in the inner structure of the cellulose fiber; the polymer grafted onto the surface imparts oil and water repellency and is easily removed by laundering, whereas the polymer grafted onto the inner structure is hardly eliminated but does not impart oil and water repellency to the fabric.

At all values of n studied, the value of r (ratio of spread height to nip width) increases with increasing values of H/ho where H is upstream reservoir thickness and ho is nip width. At higher values of H/ho, the curves of r, versus H/ho tend to “flatten” out, and r approaches an asymptotic value. For example, the asymptotic value of r for Newtonian fluids (power law constant of 1) is 1.226. Asymptotic values of r increase with decreasing values of the power law constant.

    Notizen: The effects of grafting styrene and acrylonitrile onto polyethylene and Teflon FEP films on their gas permeation and separation properties were investigated. The time-lag method was used to determine the permeability, diffusion, and solubility coefficients of nitrogen and methane gases in the grafted films. The separation factors of nitrogen - methane gas mixtures were measured by gas chromatography. Structural and morphologic changes in the modified films were examined by density, differential scanning calorimetry, and infrared measurements. Attempts were made to relate these changes to the gas permeation and separation characteristics of the films. Modification by graft copolymerization resulted in slightly improved separation factors; however, the permeability and diffusion coefficients decreased. The experimental permeability and diffusion coefficients for gas mixtures were in good agreement with those of the pure components and could be predicted by single gas permeability and diffusion coefficients.

    Notizen: The mechanism of formation of surface roughness and extrusion swelling of the extrudate and the steady-shear viscous flow behavior in the region of high shear rate for branched polymers were investigated using two low-density polyethylenes and their sheared samples. These two polyethylenes varied in their degree of branching, molecular weight, and molecular weight distribution but were similar in their melt flow index. The effect of molecular parameters, especially long-chain branching, on viscoelastic properties in the molten state was also considered. Samples of various degree of shearing level were prepared by passing them repeatedly through an extruder. Results of intrinsic viscometry, gel permeation chromatography, and infrared spectroscopy of the original and the sheared samples indicate that no appreciable variation between them takes place in the molecular parameters during the process of extrusion shearing. Both surface roughness and extrusion swelling of the extrudate diminish with increase in the extent of shear. The extrusion shearing affects the surface roughness and extrusion swelling of the extrudate as well as the capillary entrance effect more markedly for the highly branched polymers with considerably higher molecular weight than for the less branched species with bell-type molecular weight distribution. These results demonstrate that heterogeneity becomes more conspicuous with the degree of long-chain branching level, and therefore the role of long-chain branching in the development of the heterogeneity is particularly important. It is suggested that the secondary heterogeneous structure arises through phase separation or from the heterogeneous formation of strongly entangled network at the branching point of the long-chain branching in the manufacturing process of the low-density polyethylene and that its presence causes the distinctive viscoelastic properties of long-chain branched polymer melts.

    Notizen: Polypropylene-nylon 6 10 composites were prepared by the in situ polymerization of the nylon monomers on polypropylene films. The adhesion between the nylon and the polypropylene was markedly improved by a brief corona discharge treatment of the films in nitrogen prior to coating. This improvement was demonstrated by an increase in the peel strength of the nylon coating and a decrease in brittleness of photo-oxidized compesites when corona treatment was used. Adhesive bonding between the nylon and substrate was sufficiently strong to cause cohesive failure in the corona-treated polypropylene. Only interfacial failure was observed at untreated surfaces. These effects were demonstrated by electron microscopy of the surfaces produced in peel tests. The effects of corona treatment on adhesive bonding characteristics of surfaces are discussed in terms of the chemical and physical changes observed in treated surfaces.

    Notizen: Experiments were conducted on samples of crosslinked rubbers filled with poly(tetrafluoroethylene) powder or small glass beads. Volume changes on elongation were measured in a dilatometer. Slow deformation cycles showed considerable hysteresis, the volume on elongation being smaller than on contraction. There is much less hysteresis if the sample is degassed before the experiment. These observations suggest that, to a large extent, the volume of the cavities is determined by the availability of gases dissolved in the elastomer matrix. When the samples were saturated with carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and helium, it was indeed found that the degree of cavitation increased in order with the solubility of these gases.The initial rate of cavitation is high. After about 1 min, dilatation is proportional to the logarithm of time. This rate is inversely related to the solubility of the gas present.When a sample is subjected to a constant tensile stress under vacuum and the external pressure is suddenly brought to atmospheric, the elongation at first decreases due to compression of the cavities and then increases slowly as gas diffuses into them. Even unfilled compounds mixed mechanically contain submicroscopic holes. These enlarge on deformation thus causing dilatation. Only for samples prepared by evaporation from solution is there no pressure dependence of the apparent modulus.It is demonstrated that the relation between the volume of vacuum cavities and the external pressure resembles that of volume and inflation pressure of a spherical hole in an infinite elastic medium.

    Notizen: When the Rouse distribution of relaxation times is inserted into Pao's constitutive equation as expressed by Huseby and Blyler, a simple two-parameter model results. The parameters can be fitted using the limiting values of viscosity and modulus at low shear rates. The modulus in this case is defined as the ratio of shear stress during steady flow to the recovered shear during creep recovery with the stress removed. The mathematical model, is then used to predict the behavior at high shear rates where flow is pseudoplastic and elasticity is non-Hookean. A sample of polyisobutylene and several high molecular weight poly(dimethylsiloxanes) can be fitted reasonably well. Silicones of lower molecular weight (3.7 and 5.5 × 105) are not correlated successfully, perhaps because not all the “recoverable shear” stored during flow can actually be recovered experimentally. The Rouse distribution can be generalized for added flexibility.

    Notizen: The thermal decomposition behavior of rayon yarn which had been treated with various chlorosilanes and boron-phosphorus compounds was determined at temperatures up to 800°C. It was found that 70% of the available hydroxyl groups in rayon would react with dichlorodiphenylsilane and that the treated yarn had an initial decomposition temperature 125°C higher than that of untreated rayon. The weight loss of the treated yarn at 800°C was dependent on the nature of the chlorosilane and the type of posttreatment used. Alkylchlorosilanes produced higher weight losses than did the arylchlorosilane-treated rayons. Treatment of rayon yarn with bis(chlorodiphenyl-phosphine)decaborane (BCDPD) or dimeric chlorophospha(III)-o-carborane (DCPC) resulted in an increase in the char yield of the pyrolyzed yarns. In the case of untreated rayon, weight retention at 800°C was 20%, whereas the treated yarns yielded boronated residues of 42-53%. Carbon yields as high as 28% were obtained with the BCDPD treatment. This treatment also resulted in substantial improvement in the oxidative stability of rayon at temperatures up to 250°C.

    Notizen: The effect of N-methyl dithiocarbamate substitution on the radiation stability of poly-(vinyl chloride) (PVC) films was studied. PVC containing between 2 and 11 mole-% N-methyl dithiocarbamate (PMD) was irradiated with γ-rays from a 60Co source at 40°C and the evolved gaseous products were measured and analyzed with a mass spectrometer. The apparent G values for gas evolution for PMD decreased remarkably. For example, a G value of 0.28 was obtained for a PMD which contains 11 mole-% dithiocarbamate group compared with a G value of 10.8 for unmodified poly(vinyl chloride). Furthermore, the mass spectrum of the evolved gas from the same PMD sample (PMD-44) with 10 Mrad irradiation showed no hydrogen chloride to be present. The external protection was studied using polymer-blended films of PVC and PMD-44. The stabilization coefficients for internal protection and external protection in polymer blends were calculated. The ESR spectrum of the irradiated PMD-44 showed a strong anisotropy with high g values which differed significantly from the spectrum of the irradiated PVC. A suggested mechanism for radiation protection of PVC against γ-rays irradiation by the N-methyl dithiocarbamate group is discussed.

    Notizen: An attempt has been made to rationalize the variables in the preparation procedure of Loeb-Sourirajan-type reverse-osmosis membranes. The quaternary phase diagram of the system cellulose acetate-acetone-formamide-water was determined and has proved a useful tool in the discussion of membrane structures and properties. A mechanism based on differences in the precipitation rate of the polymer during the membrane formation process has been suggested to explain the observed asymmetry in the membrane structure. The porosity of the membrane has been ascribed to the relative rates of water entering and solvent leaving the cast film. The effects of the casting solution composition, the evaporation time, the wash bath temperature, and the annealing procedure have been studied. X-Ray diffraction and electron microscopy were used to supplement flux and retention data of membranes made from a cellulose acetate-formamide-acetone casting solution.

    Notizen: Large sublimed leaflets of titanium trichloride have been observed over a wide range of magnification both by optical and electron microscopy under conditions such that ethylene polymerization was slow enough so that its progress could be observed in detail. After treatment with triethylaluminum, a network of cracks develops on which polymer grows upon introducing ethylene. Polymer also appears on steps, crushed areas, and cleaved edges but not on as-grown edges. The polymer appearing on lateral surfaces was nodular in character while that growing on basal surfaces was fibrous. The physical properties of these two forms may be different, and methods for favoring one or the other are suggested.

    Notizen: The kinetics of continuous emulsion polymerization of styrene were studied theoretically on the basis of the authors' batch reaction model, and a new reaction model was proposed for continuous operation. The validity of the model was tested by experiments conducted with stirred tank reactors in series. The characteristics of the first reactor used to generate polymer particles were studied in particular detail. It was found that there was an optimum residence time for the first reactor, the value of which was quantitatively predictable from the operating variables. The most suitable combinations of several types of reactors for continuous emulsion polymerization are also discussed.

    Notizen: The stability of red iron oxide, titanium dioxide, and carbon black dispersed in cyclohexanone and isopropyl alcohol solutions of fatty polyamides was studied by measuring adsorption, viscosity, zeta potential, and sedimentation volumes. It was found that the stability of dispersion is markedly affected by the adsorption of polyamides. The greater the amount of adsorption, the greater the stability. On the other hand, a negative adsorption impaired the stability. A stabilization mechanism of polyamide adsorption was discussed in terms of entropic repulsion, electrostatic repulsion, and van der Waal's attraction.

    Notizen: In order to synthesize poly(methacrylic acid) and poly(alkyl methacrylates) over a wide range of polymer tacticity, the anionic polymerization of the following alkyl methacrylates (ethyl, n-propyl, isopropyl, n-butyl, sec-butyl, isobutyl, tert-butyl, n-amyl, n-hexyl, n-octyl, n-decyl, n-lauryl, and n-octadecyl) in toluene using phenylmagnesium bromide initiation was studied. It was found that the amount of isotactic polymer structure generally decreased as the size of the ester group increased. In all cases, the polymers had greater than 50% isotactic triad structure. Whether the polymerization was carried out at 0° or -78°C had little or no effect on the tacticity of the polymer produced. It was found that the poly(alkyl methacrylates) produced could be hydrolyzed in concentrated sulfuric acid to poly(methacrylic acid). The poly(methacrylic acid) produced in the hydrolysis could be esterified with diazomethane to give poly(methyl methacrylate) or with diazoethane to give poly(ethyl methacrylate) with the same tacticity as the poly(alkyl methacrylate) from which the poly(methacrylic acid) was derived. It is possible, therefore, to produce poly(alkyl methacrylates) of a desired tacticity by polymerizing the appropriate monomer, hydrolyzing, and reesterifying the resultant poly(methacrylic acid) with a diazoalkane to give the desired poly(alkyl methacrylate).

    Notizen: Infrared absorbance measurements as a function of temperature down to 13°K have been made on poly(ethylene terephthalate) and polystyrene. Transition temperatures are assigned to the temperatures where there are abrupt changes in the absorbance or integrated band intensities. Bands of known structural origin arising from either crystal-line or amorphous phases are studied to probe the structure basis and environment effect for each transition. Transitions are found around 50, 120, 180, and 220°K for PET and around 50° and 235°K for polystyrene.

    Notizen: Low-pressure plasma technique was used in the deposition of thin polymeric coatings upon a filter paper. Sixteen different monomers, including aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons, nitriles, chlorine-containing compounds, and a silane, were used in the coatings. Most of the coatings functioned as water vapor barriers in different degrees, and the coated samples possessed wet tensile strengths anywhere from 3 to 34 times that of the untreated samples. Attenuated total reflectance infrared spectroscopy was used to study the chemical structure of the coatings.

    Notizen: The molecular weight distribution of a series of polyisobutylenes was determined using osmotic pressure measurements, gel permeation chromatography, and intrinsic viscosity. All of the polymers except for one, a blend of the highest and lowest molecular weight constituents, had similar moderate molecular weight distributions. The “extended chain length” method of calibrating the gel permeation chromatograph for polyisobutylenes was found to be effective. Steady state and transient shear stresses and normal stresses were measured on 5% decalin solutions of these polymers. The zero shear viscosity increased with the 3.3 power of molecular weight, and the zero shear normal stress coefficient (σ11 - σ22)/Γ2 varied with the 7.5 power. Relative elastic memory as measured by (σ11 - σ22)/σ12 or stress relaxation increased with increasing molecular weight (and at constant number- or weight-average molecular weight) with breadth of distribution. Stress overshoot also correlated with this tendency.

    Notizen: In order to determine the effect of the molecular structure of short side branches in lowdensity polyethylene upon the physical properties of the resin, a study was carried out in which small amounts of various comonomers were added to an otherwise relatively unbranched polymer. It was found that linear short side branches have about the same effect in decreasing stiffness and increasing toughness as the natural short-chain branches of polyethylene have. However, branches containing a tert-butyl group increased resin toughness more than linear branches while decreasing stiffness by about the same amount. Thus, by adding a small amount of branched, short side branches, it is possible to obtain an optimum balance of physical properties not obtainable from low-density ethylene homopolymer.

    Notizen: Branched polyethylene has quite different rheological and physical properties from its linear homologue. Despite their many different properties, the densities of linear and branched polyethylene melts at atmospheric pressure have been reported to be identical at all temperatures. However, it was not known whether their melt densities at a given temperature would also be identical at all pressures. In this investigation, the compressibilities of one linear and two branched polyethylene melts at 160°C, 190°C, and 220°C were studied, and it was found that they had an identical compressibility over the present experimental pressure range of ca. 0-455 psi (0-31 atm). Both the specific volume and the density at each temperature could be very accurately expressed as linear functions of pressure for this pressure range. Time-dependent compressive property was not observed within the present low pressure range.

    Notizen: Structure-physical property relationships in high-vinyl butadiene-styrene copolymers have been determined for samples cured with dicumyl peroxide under the same conditions. Three different structures, butadiene-styrene-butadiene (B-S-B) triblocks, butadiene-styrene (B-S) diblocks, and random butadiene-styrene copolymers, have been examined. Flexural modulus increases with increasing styrene content owing to the inherent stiffness of a polystyrene backbone. Swelling increases whereas hardness and heat distortion temperature decrease with increasing styrene content. This behavior is explained by the decrease in crosslink density with increasing styrene content in all structures. Heat distortion temperatures of the B-S-B and B-S networks are superior to the heat distortion properties of the random structures. The B-S-B structure is the most solvent resistant, followed by the random copolymers, with the B-S structures swelling to the greatest extent. Swelling differences between the B-S-B and random networks decrease with increasing styrene content, while swelling differences between the B-S-B and B-S networks increase with increasing styrene content. These results are explained by the nature of the crosslinking reaction and the number of loose ends present in each network.

    Notizen: Diphenylguanidine acceleration of sulfuration of natural rubber both in the presence and absence of dicumyl peroxide (DCP) has been studied. DPG enhances the rate of decomposition of DCP, and the crosslinking maxima due to DCP are lowered by DPG to some extent, which increases with the concentration up to a limiting value. The rate of sulfur decrease is very high and is dependent on DPG concentration but practically independent of the presence of ZnO and stearic acid. It is observed that with constant level of DCP and sulfur, crosslinking increases with the increase of DPG concentration and finally becomes additive when the molar proportion of DPG: S8 approximately equals 1:1. In presence of ZnO and stearic acid, with each increment of DCP concentration crosslinking is retarded for both systems. Mechanisms have been suggested in terms of polar and radical process.

    Notizen: Low molecular weight components of both an acid-polymerized and a γ-alumina polymerized furfuryl alcohol polymer were separated by gas chromatography utilizing a Porapak type P-S column packing. The identities of the separated polymer components were established by infrared spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and nuclear magnetic resonance analysis. Volatile constituents found to be common to both furfuryl alcohol resin types were: furfuryl alcohol, water, difurylmethane, difurfuryl ether, and 2,5-difurfurylfuran. Also, 5-furfurylfurfuryl alcohol was found to be present only in the acid-polymerized resin, and 4-furfuryl-2-pentenoic acid γ-lactone was a constituent only of the γ-alumina-polymerized resin. Contrary to expectation, no esters of levulinic acid were found among the low molecular weight components of the γ-alumina-polymerized furfuryl alcohol polymer.

    Notizen: A rapid iteration method has been developed to correct the molecular weight averages calculated from raw GPC data for dispersion. Though simple in its performance, it covers the general case that the instrumental spreading characteristics (Tung's resolution factor h) depend on the elution volume. Moreover, it is irrelevant whether the calibration curve, being the logarithmic plot of the molecular weight versus the elution volume, is linear or not. The method has been applied to a number of well-characterized polystyrene mixtures and yields molecular weight averages which agree with those predicted theoretically. The effect of asymmetry exerted by the dispersion on both molecular weight averages M̄n and M̄w is also discussed.

    Notizen: Differences in refractive index between deuterated and normal solvents have been determined using a conventional gel permeation chromatograph equipped with a differential refractometer detector. Three molecular systems have been studied, namely, water-deuterium oxide, acetone-acetone (d6), and tetrahydrofuran-tetrahydrofuran (d8). A plot of the signal intensity versus the concentration of the deuterated solvent in the normal solvent gave a linear relationship for all three systems studied. The effect of deuteration is found to result in a lowering of the refractive index which is at least three orders of magnitude larger than the sensitivity of the differential refractometer. Consequently, for permeation chromatographic studies, the addition of 1% or less of the deuterated solvent in the injection sample would be more than sufficient to produce a peak characteristic of the mobile phase.

The greatest deposition of cerium occurred in the primary wall due largely to the reaction with noncellulosic constituents in this area of the fiber. The use of ceric ions for an electron-microscopic stain was found ineffective for producing the desired contrast in the cotton fiber.

    Notizen: Model equations were used to determine approximately the optimum conditionneeded to obtain the lowest molecular weight, P̄v, with a fixed molar amount of modifier by the addition in three portions of modifiers with different regulating indexes. Simulated calculations were also conducted to determine the effect two- and three-portion additions of a modifier had on the P̄v/P̄n ratio. The simulated calculations served as guides for two-, three-, and manyfold incremental modifier addition experiments. The calculations and experiments establish the need for matching the portioning of the modifier to the regulating index in order to obtain efficient use of the modifier.

    Notizen: The change of the mixing state of polybutadiene rubber-polyolefin resin blend resulting from remilling and heat treatment was studied. Polyolfin resins studied here were high-pressure polyethylene, low-pressure polyethylene, and polypropylene. As in case of polybutadiene rubber-general purpose polystyrene resin blend, we made use of the results obtained through hardness and compression modulus measurement and microscopic observation. Even in case of polybutadiene rubber-polyolefin resin blend, the change of mixing state and the softening phenomenon by remilling were observed. The hardening phenomenon by heat treatment of the sample softened by remilling was also observed at high polyolefin resin content. But at low polyolefin resin content, the hardness which had increased once often decreased as the heat treating time increased, and in some cases the nonremilled sample was observed to soften with heat treatment. These phenomena attendant on heat treatment show that the intrinsic nature of a heterogeneous blend system also appears in a microheterogeneous polymer blend system.

    Notizen: A comparison is made of the composition and properties of the different rubber vulcanizate networks obtained by varying the ratio of sulfur to sulfenamide accelerator and by the thermal aging of vulcanizates containing predominantly polysulfide crosslinks. It is concluded that the changes in network structure which can take place, for example, during the service life of natural rubber tires are not the direct cause of failures of the type associated with rubber fatigue at high temperatures. However, a reduction in the total number of crosslinks can accelerate failure by increasing the amount of heat generated during flexing. More stable networks giving improved resistance to fatigue at high operating temperatures are obtained by the use of higher ratios of accelerator to sulfur than are conventionally employed.

    Notizen: A continuum modification of the bead-spring (elastic dumbbell) theory of dilute solutions of linear macromolecules, recently introduced by Gordon and Schowalter, is used to obtain explicit constitutive equations for the stress and polarizability tensors. The stress constitutive equation, closely related to a semiempirical result obtained earlier by Spriggs, is superior in predictive capability to the constitutive equation obtained from the elastic dumbbell theory. Results are presented for steady shearing flow, large-amplitude oscillatory shearing, and stress relaxation following cessation of steady shearing and are compared with the results of the elastic and rigid dumbbell theories. In general, predictions are similar to those of the rigid dumbbell and thus are in qualitative agreement with experiment.

    Notizen: The failure criterion developed by Harwood et al. between energy input to break and hysteresis at break for amorphous rubbers has been related to the fatigue and cut growth properties of the rubber which are based on the tearing energy theory. It is found that the constant K in the hysteresis failure criterion is a function of the cut growth constant G and the inherent flaw size C0. The effect of adding fine particulate fillers to amorphous rubbers on the hysteresis and fatigue properties is considered and shown to be in agreement with the theory.

The halides include bischloromethyldurene, p-bischloromethylbenzene, and p-bisbromomethylbenzene. Since the polymers contain no olefinic unsaturation, the crosslinking is achieved by electrophilic attack of the halide on the pendant aromatic rings. The order of activity is naphthyl 〉 tolyl 〉 phenyl. The new curing system also reacts with olefinic unsaturation. Thus, an EPDM elastomer and SBR rubber, the latter containing both aromatic rings and double bonds, were also readily crosslinked.

    Notizen: The ultraviolet stability of polyimides and polyamide-imides was determined in both a wet and dry environment. Films have been exposed to these environments for 3000 and 6000 hr, respectively. The polymers are not stable to UV radiation (2900-4000 Å); serious deterioration of the mechanical properties occurs under both wet and dry conditions with the former giving rise to greater damage. The polyamide-imide polymer is more unstable to UV radiation than the two polyimides evaluated; however, it is more resistant to hydrolysis as indicated from rate data obtained from a kinetic analysis of the mechanical property degradation curves. The electrical properties of the polymers are relatively unaffected in the dry environment but begin to deteriorate as the polymer becomes brittle. In the wet environment these properties begin to deteriorate more rapidly. Dissipation factor and dielectric strength are the properties most affected.

    Notizen: The pressure-driven transport of liquids employed in reverse osmosis has been shown to occur by a solution-diffusion mechanism in highly swollen polymer membranes. A theory based on this mechanism was successfully used earlier to correlate permeation fluxes for such membranes. Positive confirmation of this theory is provided here by direct measurement of the proposed concentration gradient. A study of the temperature dependence of the liquid diffusion coefficient in the polymer membrane has provided additional evidence of a hydrodynamic regime of diffusion in highly swollen membranes. It is also shown that the proposed ceiling flux in reverse osmosis is equal to the pervaporation flux.

    Notizen: Diene polymers (i.e., polyisoprene, polybutadiene, and butadiene - styrene copolymers) were hydroxylated in tetrahydrofuran by hydroboration with diborane and subsequent alkaline oxidative hydrolysis. The strong, broad infrared absorption of the product at 3340 cm-1 shows the introduction of hydroxyl group. The properties of hydroxylated diene polymers depend upon the extent of hydroxylation. The less hydroxylated polymers are rubbery. As the extent of hydroxylation increases, the product becomes a white thermoplastic which is soluble in alcohol. The hydroboration of diene polymers with diborane is very rapid. However, if the reaction is continued further, the extent of hydroxylation decreases because of side reactions. The results of acetylation and formylation of the hydroxylated products and the grafting of vinyl monomers onto hydroborated diene polymers are also presented.

    Notizen: The influence of small amounts of 1-chloro-1,3-butadiene on the kinetics of the emulsion polymerization of 2-chloro-1,3-butadiene and on properties of the resulting polychloroprene has been studied. Some changes in the properties of the chloroprene polymers were observed at 1-chloro-1,3-butadiene concentrations in monomer as relatively high as about 5%. Polymer prepared in the presence of 5% 1-chloro-1,3-butadiene had decreased tensile strength, and also its crystallization tendency was somewhat lowered. At 1-chloro-1,3-butadiene concentrations near 1% or higher, the polychloroprene obtained had worsened thermo-oxidation stability which resulted in crosslinking during aging. The kinetics of emulsion polymerization of chloroprene are not influenced by 1-chloro-1,3-butadiene up to 5%.

    Notizen: A new method of obtaining films of aromatic heterocyclic ladder polymers has been found which circumvents casting from high-boiling acidic solvents. The BBL ladder polymer has been formed into tough, durable films by collecting suspensions of the polymer obtained from acid reprecipitations upon a fritted glass funnel. After drying, the polymer can be removed as film, with thickness dependent upon the amount of material used. Such a film has a tensile strength of 9,600 lb/in.2 as compared to a tensile strength of 16,000 lb/in.2 obtained from the same polymer when cast from methanesulfonic acid solution.

    Notizen: Sulfur-free thiuram vulcanization has been investigated at temperatures from 160° to 190°C over 0.5 to 600 min. Continuous measurements in a VUREMO curemeter were used to estimate the extent of crosslinking, which was plotted against cure time. Simultaneously the values of the network chain density were calculated from swelling measurements on the vulcanizates. The cure curves show clearly an induction period (ti), then fast crosslinking, a partial degradation, a “long-time” crosslinking, and finally a slow, limited degradation. Apart from the induction period, the kinetic graphs are satisfactory represented by a rate equation assuming three independent first-order reactions: fast crosslinking, degradation, and slow crosslinking. The rate equation contains seven kinetic parameters. Over the temperature range studied, there is no difference between the values of activation energy for fast crosslinking, for degradation, for slow crosslinking, and for ti-1. Due to the presence of thiourea, the values of the induction period, the rate constant, and the extent of slow crosslinking are decreased. Simultaneously the activation energies calculated from degradation and slow crosslinking are significantly increased. On the basis of the above results, the mechanism of the sulfur-free thiuram vulcanization, in which ionic and radical reactions take place, is discussed.

    Notizen: If drawn, crosslinked, high molecular weight polyethylene films are restrained during melting, two endothermic peaks may be noted on a scanning calorimeter. In x-ray diffraction experiments, the appearance of a single new peak accompanies the disappearance of the orthorhombic pattern. The new peak is thought to be due to hexagonal chain packing above the melting temperature. The results are interpreted in terms of a small amount of fibrillar crystals in the drawn films.

    Notizen: The diffusive flux of NaCl and the hydraulic flux of pure water through coagulated cellulose acetate membranes are examined. Coagulated cellulose acetate membranes (without densification by heat treatment or drying) possess higher permeability than what may be expected from the permeabilities of the dry polymer. Their overall hydraulic permeability (ultrafiltration rate of water) is greatly dependent upon the membrane casting conditions and the resulting asymmetry of the membrane. On the other hand, the asymmetry of a membrane does not play as great a role in the diffusive permeability of a solute. With homogeneous membranes, higher diffusive flux is always accompanied by higher hydraulic permeability. With asymmetric membranes, this is not always true. The diffusive permeability of NaCl and the hydraulic permeability of water through coagulated cellulose acetate membranes can be controlled nearly independently. Consequently, high diffusive (NaCl) permeability with low hydraulic water permeability and vice versa can be obtained by varying the casting conditions and also by partially saponifying the denser portion of the membrane.
