    Beschreibung: A two liquid, neutral buoyancy technique is being used to simulate propellant behavior in a weightless environment. By equalizing the density of two immiscible liquids within a container (propellant tank), the effect of gravity at the liquid interface is balanced. Therefore the surface-tension forces dominate to control the liquid/liquid system configuration in a fashion analogous to a liquid/gas system in a zero gravity environment.

    Facilities and support systems for a 90-day test of a regenerative life support system (1972)

    Beschreibung: A 90-day test is reported of a regenerative life support system which was completed in a space station simulator. The long duration of the test and the fact that it was manned, imposed rigid reliability and safety requirements on the facility. Where adequate reliability could not be built into essential facility systems, either backup systems or components were provided. Awareness was intensified by: (1) placing signs on every piece of equipment that could affect the test, (2) painting switches on all breaker panels a bright contrasting color, (3) restricting access to the test control area, and (4) informing personnel in the facility (other than test personnel) of test activities. It is concluded that the basic facility is satisfactory for conducting long-duration manned tests, and it is recommended that all monitor and alarm functions be integrated into a single operation.

    Beschreibung: Theoretical considerations of lightning phenomena and the effects of the magnetic, capacitive, and resistive components of lightning-induced voltages are discussed. A typical tracking station is analyzed from a lightning standpoint. Specific protective methods are discussed, including the implementation of high-surge-current voltage clippers for sensitive electrical and electronic circuits, grounding, counterpoises, and bonding. The safety of operating personnel is also treated as a prime consideration.
