    Notizen: Abstract The application of laser deceleration and monochromatization of atoms in the schemes of single atom fluorescent detection is examined. The analysis performed shows that the use of resonant-light pressure in experiments with atomic beams enables one to obtain an ultimate value of detection selectivity that ranges from 1013 to 1016.

    Notizen: Abstract For the detection of the rare radioactive isotope41Ca, the possibilities of the earlier-proposed initial-state enrichment by continuous-wave laser radiation are examined. It is shown that the enrichment ∼1014 of 3d-states of the ion Ca II can be reached. As the method of enriched-state detection, the process of resonant charge exchange is analysed. For a further increase of the selectivity, the repetition of the cycle “initial state enrichment plus resonant charge exchange” is discussed.

    Notizen: Abstract A new method for determining trace amounts of elements in a substance has been developed. It is based on thermal evaporation and atomization of a substance in vacuum and detection of the released trace atoms by the laser stepwise photoionization technique. A rather effective way of detecting atoms is their multistep excitation to Rydberg states by the radiation of tunable dye lasers with their subsequent ionization by electric field pulses. The analytical laser spectrometer consisting of several tunable, pulsed dye lasers, a vacuum chamber with an atomizer and a recording system is described. The microimpurities of elements have been detected in pure materials: the contents of Na impurities in CdS crystals (2×10−6%) and Al impurities in germanium (2×10−7%). The detection limit of about 10−9% was determined. A technique for direct determination of the content of elements in natural water and human blood is described. A high sensitivity, universality and other merits of the method enable it to be used in determining traces of many important elements at a level of 10−8 to 10−11% almost in any matrix.

    Notizen: Abstract Stimulated Raman scattering has been experimentally studied by using the process of two-step ionization of a Na atomic beam. A dip that is due to a resonance at a combination frequency corresponding to the forbidden 3S–4S transition of a Na atom was observed in the signal of nonresonant photoionization when two laser frequencies λ1=284.5 nm and λ2=1.06 μm were overlapped.

    Notizen: Abstract This paper analyses the slight change undergone by the polarization of a laser beam performing a multipass between two spherical mirrors facing each other. We replace the general 16-parameter Mueller formalism by an approximate 7-parameter one, and we give a quantitative experimental criterion for the validity of this approximation. Then we apply this formalism to the analysis of our experimental data. The results evidence:i) intrinsic birefringence in the mirror coatings (typical value per reflexion ∼2 to 4×10−4 rad);ii) birefringence due to off-normal incidence (typically 3.6×10−5 rad per reflexion for an incidence of 2×10−2 rad);iii) optical rotation, of purely geometrical origin (typically 14° for a multipass with revolution symmetry and 100 forward-backward passes under constant incidencei=2°);iv) no observable circular dichroism (≲10−6). Finally these results are discussed in connection with possible associated systematics in a parity violation experiment which motivated this work.

    Notizen: Abstract An observation and the theory of a nonlinear response in the ensemble of nonlinear classical oscillators excited by two field pulses — similar to the phenomenon of a photon echo in optics — are reported. It has been shown that an echo arises in any ensemble with an inhomogeneously broadened line regardless of the type of interaction with a field (classical or quantum). New peculiarities appear during the determinate distribution of frequencies in the ensemble. On the one hand, an echo pulse is observed with a relatively small (about 100) number of oscillatorsN, on the other, new pulses spaced at a distance that is proportional toN arise in the nonlinear response.

    Notizen: Abstract The lineshape of two-photon absorption in a standing-wave field during elastic collisions is studied. It has been found that the transit broadening of the two-photon resonance on vibrational-rotational molecular transitions is sharply decreased because of an increase in the time of interaction of particles with the electromagnetic field due to elastic collisions. The effect considered allows one to obtain supernarrow optical resonances of two-photon absorption in a low-pressure gas with high intensity.

    Notizen: Abstract We report the observation of superfluorescence and of stimulated emission in the near-infrared at 965.69 nm in atomic Bi. The atoms are prepared in the 6p 2(3 P 0)7p 3/2 upper state by nonresonant two-photon excitation. The cooperative character of the emission is demonstrated by the delay of the light pulses and their N2 dependence upon the atomic density.

    Notizen: Abstract The general steady-state solution of the density matrix equations for a Doppler broadened three-level system irradiated by two resonant standing-wave laser beams of arbritrary intensity is analyzed. The solution is expressed in a matrix continued fraction form, that involves 4×4 matrices in important configurations and is convenient for numerical computations. Some representative cases including the absorption spectra for a probe laser of arbitrary intensity, the Doppler-free multiphoton resonances and the optically pumped lasers are analyzed numerically in connection with previous experimental investigations.

    Notizen: Abstract We consider cooling of a trapped particle in the limit when the position and velocity variables do not change adiabatically. The slowly varying quantity in a harmonic trap is then the energy, and a representation based on oscillator eigenstates is used. For large excitation, fast particles, a Fokker-Planck expansion is obtained which is valid when our adiabatic description breaks down. Estimates of the initial cooling rate are given and compared with earlier results. Our treatment requires a large number of oscillator states to be coupled by each one-photon process, and in this limit the diffusion will make the expansion invalid towards the end of the cooling; our physical interpretation is that particles leak out of the trap. The opposite case, the Lamb-Dicke regime, is advantageous for cooling experiments, and then a difference equation replaces the Fokker-Planck equation of the present paper.

    Notizen: Abstract Observation with an improved signal-to-noise ratio of the hyperfine resonance pattern of199Hg+ stored in a radiofrequency trap is reported. A frequency control loop which locks the frequency of a 5MHz quartz crystal oscillator to the hyperfine transition of stored mercury ions, close to 40.5 GHz, is described. In this system, pulses delivered by the photomultiplier are processed digitally. Optimal conditions for the interrogation of the hyperfine transition are specified. A fractional frequency stability σy(τ)=3.6×10−11τ−1/2 for 10s〈τ〈3500s has been obtained. This frequency stability is comparble to that of commercially available cesium beam frequency standards. Prospect for improvement by a factor of at least 10 are discussed.

    Notizen: Abstract We discuss laser cooling of a trapped ion. The problem is formulated for a harmonic trapping well and one-dimensional cooling. We carry out an adiabatic elimination and a Fokker-Planck expansion in the limit of a slowly oscillating particle. The ensuing Fokker-Planck equation is discussed and solved in certain limits. Especially the final cooling stages and ultimate width are of interest. The approach is related to earlier work and its validity is discussed.

It has been shown that, in recording single atoms via the fluorescence signal from the photoelectron of thek〉1 atom, it is possible to achieve extremely high selectivity (S≃1020) of detection of these atoms against a great number of other atoms. The probability of recording the atom is slightly decreased.

    Notizen: Abstract We obtain essentially Doppler free spectra of the naturally occuring isotopes of Mg+, which are bound in a Penning trap, by using a frequency stabilized laser to continuously cool the ions, while the scatter rate from a second, frequency swept laser is, monitored. We show that the magnetron motion as well as the cyclotron and axial motion can be minimized. Line position measurements yielding resonance transition energy, isotope and hyperfine shifts are reported.

    Notizen: Abstract This paper treats the mechanical pressure of resonant light acting on a two-level system, where the degenerate magnetic sublevels are taken into account. The theory is developed with arbitrary relations between the quantization axis and the propagation and polarization of the light. Rate terms are obtained both for spontaneous and induced transitions; the requirements of incoherence put restrictions on the possible geometries of the experiment. The rate equations are restricted to motion along a light beam only; this one-dimensional case is simpler to handle. For small recoil velocities a Fokker-Planck equation is derived, and an adiabatic elimination procedure enables us to derive an equation for the velocity distribution of the total population. The assumptions and approximations are formulated and discussed.

The results of a detailed investigation of this resonance are given in the first part of the present paper. The second part is devoted to a two-photon resonance in a standing-wave field: the time of coherent interaction with the field is increased for trapped particles, which permits the elimination of transit resonance broadening.

    Notizen: Abstract Fluorescence spectra in the near infrared are observed of the dye Eastman 9860 and of new, faster mode-locking dyes. The quantum efficiencies are determined to be small with η≃10−3. The short fluorescence lifetimes are deduced from optical gain measurements. The fluorescence time-constants are found to have the same value as the corresponding absorption recovery times. Even laser action is observed in these fast saturable absorbers previously belieyed to be non-fluorescent.

    Notizen: Abstract In this paper we consider the laser cooling of a trapped particle when the discrete nature of the quantum levels must be taken into account. We particularize the equations to the Lamb-Dicke limit when the oscillational, amplitude is much less than the optical wavelength. Then the quantum levels are coupled only to the neighbouring ones, and we can also find a small parameter to use for adiabatic elimination of rapidly varying terms. There emerges one rate equation for the probability distribution over the quantum states. The ultimate distribution is found to be of the Planckian type independently of the initial one. We solve the equation, generally and obtain the time evolution for an arbitrary initial distribution. In particular we look at an initially thermal, Poisson, or pure state distribution. For the thermal one we find that its shape is preserved during the cooling. The results are discussed.

    Notizen: Abstract Selective regular reflection in the neighborhood of the 253.7 nm mercury resonance line was investigated in the pressure range extending up to 700 bar by applying a new technology, an internally heated autoclave with a window of synthetic sapphire. The measurements yield the maximum of spectral reflectance, which was shown to be constant up to a density of about 1018 cm−3, first to arise and then to fall off with increasing pressure. In this density range the impact theory of resonance broadening and the classical equations of anomalous dispersion are no longer valid and a statistical theory of multilateral dipole-dipole interactions should be developed to describe the reflection profiles.

    Notizen: Abstract By means of a N2-laser pumped dye-laser (P L ≈20kW, Δv L 〈 10 GHZ) different two-photon resonant four-wave coupling processes in Ba vapour (n Ba≈1016 cm−3) using the Ba states 6s8s 1 S o and 7s5d 1 D 2 were investigated. Coherent line radiation with conversion rates up to 10−3 was generated within the range of λ=190–200 nm by sumfrequency mixingv UV=2v 1+v 2 of 3 laser photons and within the range of λ=250–380 nm by couplingv UV=2v 1±v IR of 2 laser photons with one photonv IR stimulated emitted in laser-induced Ba transitions. For the second coupling type the various nonlinear processes contributing to the formation of the coupling components are discussed. The power of the UV-component as function of inensity and resonance detuning of the laser as well as on the phase-mismatch was calculated on the basis of the small signal theory and compared to the experimental data.
