    Notes: Investigations on the Thermal Decomposition of n-Dodecylcyclopentane in the Gas PhaseIn the thermal decomposition of n-dodecylcyclopentane at 670 and 750°C in a laboratory tubular reactor mixtures of hydrogen and 57 and 113 hydrocarbons respectively are formed. The mixtures have been analyzed and identified by capillary gas chromatography and by mass spectrometry. The distribution of the reaction products is used for mechanistic discussions.

    Notes: Kinetic Investigations of the Pyrolysis of Mono-n-alkyl-cyclohexanesThe thermal decomposition of cyclohexane and six mono-n-alkylcyclohexanes was studied kinetically in a metallic laboratory tubular reactor at 650 to 850°C and atmospheric pressure.Kinetic parameters were found to be a function of length of the alkylic side chain. A comparison with analogous parameters of n-paraffins and the unsubstituted cyclohexane allowed the conclusion that C—C-scission in the alkylic chain is the initial reaction in pyrolysis of n-alkylcyclohexanes followed by radical attacks to all C—H-bonds of the feed molecules.

    Description: Solar-wind plasma data from the ISEE-3 and Helios 2 spacecraft were examined in order to explain a uniquely rapid 10 deg turning of the plasma tail of comet Bradfield 1979l on 1980 February 6. An earlier study conducted before the availability of in situ solar-wind data (Brandt et al., 1980) suggested that the tail position angle change occurred in response to a solar-wind velocity shear across the polar component changed by approximately 50 km/s. The present contribution confirms this result and further suggests that the comet-tail activity was caused by non-corotating, disturbed plasma flows probably associated with an Importance 1B solar flare.

    Description: Burst-like and long-lived ion fluxes (E greater than 30 keV) of Jovian origin have been observed in interplanetary space by the LECP instrument on the Voyager 1 and 2 spacecraft. Burst (few minute duration) events are observed at distances greater than 0.6 AU from Jupiter. These events are highly anisotropic and possess steep energy spectra, while long-lived (greater than 8 hour duration) events have relatively steady fluxes at low energies, strong anisotropies that decay with time, and a variable high energy component. Both types of events usually display simultaneous onsets and sharp cutoffs for all energies, an excess of atomic number Z not less than 6 particles compared to solar and interplanetary events, and particle flow directions pointed away from Jupiter along the local interplanetary magnetic field. The origin for the long-lived events appears to be inside the bow shock of the planet.

    Description: The tidal heating components for the dusty Martian atmosphere are computed based on dust optical parameters estimated from Viking Lander imaging data, and used to compute the variation of the tidal surface pressure components at the Viking Lander sites as a function of season and the total vertical extinction optical depth of the atmosphere. An atmospheric tidal model is used which is based on the inviscid, hydrostatic primitive equations linearized about a motionless basic state the temperature of which varies only with height, and the profiles of the tidal forcing components are computed using a delta-Eddington approximation to the radiative transfer equations. Comparison of the model results with the observed variations of surface pressure and overhead dust opacity at the Viking Lander 1 site reveal that the dust opacities and optical parameters derived from imaging data are roughly representative of the global dust haze necessary to reproduce the observed surface pressure amplitudes, with the exception of the model-inferred asymmetry parameter, which is smaller during the onset of a great storm. The observed preferential enhancement of the semidiurnal tide with respect to the diurnal tide during dust storm onset is shown to be due primarily to the elevation of the tidal heating source in a very dusty atmosphere.

    Description: Major features of the daily surface pressure oscillations observed by the Viking landers during the two great dust storms on Mars in 1977 can be explained in terms of the classical atmospheric tidal theory developed for the earth's atmosphere. The most dramatic exception is the virtual disappearance of only the diurnal tide at Viking Lander 1 just before the second storm. This disappearance is attributed to destructive interference between the usually westward-traveling tide and an eastward-traveling diurnal Kelvin mode generated by orographically induced differential heating. The continuing Viking Lander 1 pressure measurements can be used with the model to monitor future great dust storms.

    Description: Modern atmospheric tidal theory has shown that the dominance of the terrestrial semidiurnal surface pressure oscillation, relative to its diurnal counterpart, is the result of the elevated heating source generated by solar heating of stratospheric ozone. Observations of the daily surface pressure variation at the Viking Lander 1 site on Mars reveal a similar predominance of the semidiurnal surface pressure oscillation only during the onset of a Martian great dust storm. Application of a classical, analytic tidal model to the Viking Lander 1 data indicates that elevating the effective heat source due to solar heating of airborne dust by a few kilometers during the onset of a Martian great dust storm can account for the observed semidiurnal surface pressure variation.

    Description: The character of both the retreating polar cap edge and the accompanying atmospheric ice haze has been determined during the 1979-1980 Viking Survey/Completion mission observations of the Martian north polar regions. The ability of these Viking IR observations to distinguish haze from surface condensate yields a more accurate seasonal regression for the polar cap than can be determined from visual images. The transition from ice-free ground to a predominantly ice-covered surface at the cap edge spans 5-10 deg of latitude.

    Description: Observations by the Viking Orbiters and Landers have made substantial contributions to an understanding of the episodic, planetary-scale dust storms on Mars. These and other observations pertinent to the great dust storms are reviewed in this paper; most of the emphasis is on the atmospheric/climatic aspects of these great storms. Specifically, observations concerning the optical properties of the airborne dust, the frequency of occurrence of great dust storms, and the kinematics of their evolution are summarized. Special attention is given to the various estimates derived from Viking data of atmospheric dust opacity. Within this observational framework, various physical mechanisms underlying the generation, evolution, and decay of the Martian great dust storms are discussed.

    Notes: The conjugate addition of the chiral, non-racemic alkoxy-enolates 5 and 6 to nitroolefins furnishes the hydroxynitroesters 7-13, which are catalytically hydrogenated to give the lactams 14-18. The configuration of adduct 7 from nitroethylene was elucidated by NMR. analysis of the acetal 20 derived from 7. The assignment establishes that the reaction follows the stereochemical rule of attack depicted in 21 and previously deduced for other electrophiles, i.e. formation of erythro-products of type 3b and 4b. No stereocontrol was found at the newly formed chiral centers in α- and β-position to the NO2 group of 8-12.
