Description: A summary data set concerning 4 years of Antarctic sea-ice conditions was created and is available on magnetic tape. The data were derived from electrically scanning microwave radiometer brightness temperatures and were mapped into a polar stereographic grid enclosing the 50 deg S latitude circle. The grid size varies from about 32 by 32 sq km at the poles to about 28 by 28 sq km at 50 deg S. The microwave brightness temperatures of Antarctic sea ice are predominantly characteristic of first-year ice with an emissivity of 0.92 at 19 GHz frequency. Sea ice concentrations were calculated from the brightness temperature data for each grid element with an algorithm that uses an emissivity value of 0.92 and an ice physical temperature estimate from climatological surface air temperatures. Monthly, multiyear monthly, and yearly maps of brightness temperatures and sea ice concentrations were created for the 4 years, except for 7 months for which useable data were insufficient.

Description: Analytical expressions for the backscattering cross sections have been derived for active remote sensing of an arbitrary number of random layers. These results are applicable to the interpretation of radar backscattering from vegetation and snow-ice fields. We illustrate the results by matching experimental data using the model of a three-layer random medium with air above and ground below.

Description: A method and apparatus for making in-situ measurements of flow resistivity on the Earth's ground surface is summarized. The novel feature of the invention is two concentric cylinders, inserted into the ground surface with a measured pressure applied to the surface inside the inner cylinder. The outer cylinder vents a plane beneath the surface to the atmosphere through an air space. The flow to the inner cylinder is measured thereby indicating the flow from the surface to the plane beneath the surface.

Description: One of the advantages of automated cartography is that map data stored in the digital computer can be plotted or displayed at any scale or projection by recomputing the coordinates of the data. This is especially easy in the case of vector (graphics) data but in the case of digital image (raster) data, remapping is a more difficult operation. Examples of the remapping of digital imagery would include rectification of a LANDSAT MSS to an orthographic or Mercator projection, warping of one image to register with another, or rotation, scale, or aspect changes of a digital image. Use of general purpose computers and array processors for this task will be covered. Data processing error will be discussed for each modelling/warping approach.

Description: Satellite imagery for the State of Pennsylvania was digitally mosaicked to provide the seed data base for monitoring defoliation of hardwood trees by the gypsy moth. Two separate mosaics for the state were prepared, one before defoliation and one after defoliation, to determine the extent, direction, and impact of gypsy moth activity in the state. The digital mosaic technology used to construct the data base was transferred to Pennsylvania State University to permit periodic updates to the data base and to assist in planning and abatement activities. Participating agencies or institutions included Goddard Space Flight Center and the Pennsylvania State University Office for Remote Sensing of Earth Resources.

Description: Techniques and software developed to characterize the Washington, D.C. scene were improved and are being systematically applied to an Imperial Valley, CA scene. Digital elevation files are being acquired. One hundred seventy-two tiepoints were located in the Imperial Valley scene. They were digitized from USGS maps to determine their lat-long coordinates. A least squares fit is currently being performed between line-sample image data and the lat-long positions of the tiepoints. Thematic mapper scanner sweeps were determined for the Imperial Valley P-data. VICAR jobs are currently under way to analyze sample-direction offsets between sweeps in the data, as well as band to band registration offsets. Tiepoint location is about to begin in the Harrisburg, PA scene.

Description: Procedures and software for the digital mosaicking of Landsat data are discussed. It is noted that image processing in support of JPL's planetary program has furnished the software and procedures necessary to achieve digital image mosaicking of vidicon imagery using rigid projective geometry. The incorporation of ground-control points, by either manual or automatic ground-control point file identification, has yielded rms positional accuracies exceeding the National Map Accuracy Standards. Rotation to north vertical is effected at low computational cost. It is possible to cut input data frames in any arbitrary shape to remove cloud cover and accommodate terrain offset effects. In similar fashion, the final digital mosaic can be segmented arbitrarily to conform to user requirements. Information is presented on applications in Pennsylvania and Bolivia.

Description: Procedures for adjustment of brightness values between frames and the digital mosaicking of Landsat frames to standard map projections are developed for providing a continuous data base for multispectral thematic classification. A combination of local terrain variations in the Californian deserts and a global sampling strategy based on transects provided the framework for accurate classification throughout the entire geographic region.

Description: The paper discusses integration of Landsat, Seasat, and other geographic information sources. Mosaicking of radar data and registration of radar to Landsat digital imagery are described, and six types of geophysical data, including gravity and magnetic measurements, are integrated and analyzed using image processing techniques.

Description: Landsat digital data are presently available by frames whose size and location are determined by satellite orbit. The utility of Landsat data was increased by the image processing support for JPL's planetary program which provided the basic software and procedures necessary for image mosaicking. The computer software has been extended to perform this task on Landsat Multi-spectral scanner imagery and a ten frame digital mosaic of the Southern California desert has been completed. Major processing steps include location of geographic points in the digital frame and of common geographic points in adjacent frames, conversion to a map projection, lateral 'rubber sheet' correction of the digital frames, brightness correction of adjacent frames, and mosaicking of the frames to eliminate overlap and produce a single large frame.
