    Description: Using the fault plane mechanisms of the shallow earthquakes occurring along the Hellenic arc and the extent of the intermediate seismic belt, we make a quantitative estimate of the relative motion occurring between the Hellenic arc and the adjacent sea floor. This estimate is then used to evaluate the deformation in the Aegean area and to reconstruct the pattern of motion over the Eastern Mediterranean region for the last 13 m.y. It is shown that this pattern is compatible with the neotectonic and seismicity studies in Aegea. We then discuss the dynamics of the area and propose that, since Serravallian-Tortonian time, Aegea has been spreading gravitationally in front of the southwestward advancing Turkey. The reasons for this gravitational spreading are discussed.

However, in the last decade research in the field of marine products has increased sbstantially. The heightened interest in this area is attested by the appearance of the monumental treatise of Halstead on Poisonous and Venomous Marine Animals in 1965 (108), Baslow’s review on “Marine Pharmacology” in 1969 (14) and Scheuer’s recent book “Chemistry of Marine Natural Products” (160) in 1973.     Description: Data gathered by recent “Islas Orcadas” cruises reveal the seafloor spreading pattern for a region south of the Agulhas/Falkland fracture zone system. The presence of a magnetic anomaly bight about the Agulhas Plateau indicates that the Agulhas Plateau may have developed at the site of a tectonic plate triple junction during the Late Cretaceous. A westward jump in the seafloor spreading center during the Late Maestrichtian (anomaly 34−31) reduced the offset across the Falkland/Agulhas fracture zone system and resulted in the formation of two conjugate aseismic ridges here described as the Meteor and Islas Orcadas Rises. The magnetic lineation pattern in the Agulhas Basin suggests that a tectonic plate (Malvinas Plate) existed during Campanian to Maestrichtian times. Relative rates of motion are calculated for Antarctica, South America, and Africa for the Late Cretaceous.

    Description: A single layer of cells secretes the hard cephalopod beaks. The beccublasts are tall columnar cells that separate the beak from the surrounding buccal muscles, and must serve to attach these muscles to the beak. Within the cell layer there are three types of cells. The first, and most frequently found contain cell-long fibrils. These fibrils may have contractile and tensile properties. Complex trabeculae extend from the beccublasts into the matrix of the beak. The fibrils are attached to these trabeculae and at the other end of the cells they are anchored near to the beccublast-muscle cell interface, closely associated with the muscles that move the beak. The second group of cells contain masses of endoplasmic reticulum the cysternae of which are arranged along the long axis of the cell. These cells also contain dense granules and are probably the major source of beak hard tissue. It is probable that each cell secretes its own column of beak hard tissue. The third group of cells contains a mixture of fibrils and secretory tissue. In the beccublast layer there are changes in the proportion of the three types of cells depending upon the region sampled. In the region where growth is most active there are mostly secretory cells, whereas near the biting and wearing tip there are mainly anchoring type cells.

    Description: Laboratory data are presented on the distribution of cobalt between pyrite, chalcopyrite, and pyrrhotite. Pyrite-type deposits are used to show that the results enable one to estimate the temperatures of formation for copper mineralization. Recent years have seen extensive studies on element distributions between coexisting minerals in order to define mineralogical thermometers and barometers [1-3]. Detailed studies have been made of the thermodynamic basis of such distributions, as well as of the factors that influence component levels in coexisting minerals. Here we will not consider a theoretical analysis of the distribution, but we do note that trace elements appear in pyrite and chalcopyrite only below the 1 wt. % level, while the compositions of the minerals deviate only slightly from stoichiometric, with temperature the main parameter that controls the distribution.

    Description: This chapter discusses the carbon turnover, calcification, and growth in coral reefs. Carbon turnover within a total reef community is a function of two distinct, biochemically interacting cycles. The first is the metabolic cycle consisting of the photosynthetic fixation of CO2 and the release of CO2 by respiration and decomposition processes. Superimposed on this are the direct incorporation of organic compounds (dissolved or particulate; living or non-living) originating outside the reef systems (in the adjacent ocean waters), and the loss of organic compounds from the reef system into the out-flowing water. The second is the inorganic carbonate cycle involving the biological and non-biological precipitation and dissolution of carbonates. Superimposed on this is the loss of particulate carbonates in suspension in the out-flowing water. The main chemical component of a coral-reef system is calcium carbonate, which occurs either as high-Mg calcite, aragonite, or low-Mg calcite. The mean calcification values in various environments at One Tree Reef are presented in the chapter. These data may be converted to an implied vertical growth rate potential assuming that accrual is dominantly aragonite (density = 2.89 g cm–3) and that there is 50% porosity after normal compaction.

    Description: Pairs of individually recognizable male Octopus vulgaris were observed in a large seawater tank containing two suitable homes (brick pots or plastic buckets). None of the animals established exclusive occupancy of one home and for much of the time both animals were associated together at the same site. Usually one of the two homes was preferred and its occupant was most likely to be the larger animal, or the earlier resident if they were of equal size. Large animals were observed to take food forcefully from smaller octopus. An arm alignment interaction is described which, it is suggested, may be a means by which two octopuses establish their relative sizes.

    Description: A program of geophysical research was carried out as a preliminary stage of study of the Santorini volcanic group. This area is of remarkable geothermal and volcanological interest, and the definition of a volcanological structural model is the starting point for an understanding of the local geodynamic processes. Gravity, magnetic and geoelectrical data proved that: (i) the core of the volcanic edifice consists of a sedimentary-metamorphic basement; (ii) the basement is tectonically disturbed and a linear tectonic system produces a graben-type structure in the middle part of the area.

    Description: Sponges are diploblastic acoelomate Metazoa. They are sedentary, filter-feeding animals which utilize a layer of flagellated cells to pump a unidirectional water current through themselves. They are found in freshwater, but more abundantly in marine habitats. Sponges have been persistent throughout geological time from the Precambrian to the Recent, with special success during the Paleozoic. They are apparently the most primitive multicellular animals on a phylogenetic scale ranked by morphological complexity, although the levels of physiological and biochemical complexity found in sponges easily measure up to the degree of sophistication found in so-called higher animals. The Porifera (sponges) and Coelenterata are related as two phyla representing distinct stocks, but stemming from a presumed common although presently unknown origin (Hyman, 1940).

    Description: Mesozoic deep water sedimentary rocks uplifted and exposed in basement complexes on the islands of Fuerteventura (Canary Islands) and Maio (Cape Verdes) help document the early Atlantic ocean and the volcanic history of these islands. On Fuerteventura ca. 1.5 km of terrigenous quartzose clastics, black shales, and subordinate redeposited limestones of early Cretaceous age are overlain first by Albian-Cenomanian marls and clastics, showing extensive soft sediment slumping, then after a hiatus by Senonian nannofossil chalks with chert nodules. After a further break alkalic submarine volcanic rocks, largely hyaloclastics, were erupted, then overlain by redeposited bioclastic limestones and volcaniclastics of Oligocene age. A dyke complex was intruded, then the basement complex was uplifted, peneplaned, and overlain by Neogene plateau lavas. On Maio the basement complex comprises mafic pillow lavas of midocean ridge character overlain by up to 4 00 m of deep water sedimentary rocks. Upper Jurassic to lower Cretaceous radiolarianrich pelagic limestones are succeeded by middle and upper Cretaceous sequences of mudstones, redeposited limestones, chalks, tuffs, and volcaniclastics which document the onset of volcanism. During a sedimentary hiatus plutonic rocks were intruded, uplifted, then eroded to produce conglomerates of late Miocene age. These are overlain by several series of gently dipping subaerial alkaline basalt flows. Comparisons with D.S.D.P. sites, oil wells and on land geology confirm that the lower Cretaceous Fuerteventura quartzose clastics formed part of a deep water fan complex located close to the Atlantic continent-ocean boundary. Comparable flysch is known in the Moroccan basin, in the Betic-Maghrebide system and the feeding Tan-Tan-Cape Bojador delta system. The inferred disconformity between Cenomanian and Senonian is part of a widespread depositional hiatus associated with slumping on the adjacent west African continental margin. On Maio pelagic limestones comparable with the Tethyan Maiolica facies were deposited on a subsiding? middle/late Jurassic ocean ridge before uplift related to onset of volcanism probably in the late Cretaceous.

    Description: The usually high concentrations of Zn, Pb, Cd, and Cu in the most recently accreted portions of ferromanganese nodules from the western Baltic Sea are thought to reflect increased metal input due to anthropogenic mobilization. If so, the point of increase represents a time horizon within the structure of the nodule. Similar trace metal distributions of radiometrically dated sediments from the same area suggest that the ferromanganese nodules have grown in thickness between 0.02 and 0.16 mm yr−1. From this growth rate anthropogenic Zn flux to the nodule surface was calculated to be 80 mg m−2 yr−1.

    Description: Microbial decomposition of organic matter in recent sediments of the Landsort Deep—an anoxic basin of the central Baltic Sea—resulted in the formation of a characteristic assemblage of authigenic mineral precipitates of carbonates, sulfides. phosphates and amorphous silica, The dominant crystalline phases are a mixed Mn-carbonate [(Mn0.85Ca0.10Mg0.05)CO3]. Mn-sulfide [MnS] and Fecarbonate [FeCO3]. Amorphous Fe-sulfide [FeS]. Mn-phosphate [Mn3(PO4)2] and a mixed Fe-Ca-phosphate [(Fe0.86Ca0.14)3(PO4)2] were identified by their chemical compositions only. The variability in composition of these solid phases and their mode of occurrence as a co-existing assemblage constrains the conditions and solution composition from which they precipitated. Estimates of activities for dissolved Fe. Mn. PO4, CO3 and S in equilibrium with such an assemblage are close to those found in recent anoxic interstitial water-sediment systems. It is important to have detailed knowledge of the composition and stability conditions of these solid precipitates in order to refine stoichiometric models of interstitial nutrient regeneration in anoxic sediments.

    Description: Goban Spur lies on the continental margin of northwest Europe, southwest of Ireland. It is a marginal plateau underlain by Hercynian granites and Palaeozoic sediments, which form large horsts, grabens and tilted fault blocks with a trend that is approximately parallel to the main Celtic/Armorican Shelf edge. The spur is thought to be a westward continuation of the buoyant Cornubian Ridge, and is bounded to the north and south by large fault lines which probably represent reactivation of Hercynian structural trends. The continental basement is further divided longitudinally into a low-lying outer zone (Intermediate Zone) and a high inner region (Goban Spur proper). The ocean/continent boundary is thought to lie at the outer edge of the Intermediate Zone, Sea-floor spreading anomalies immediately west of the Intermediate Zone suggest that the adjacent ocean crust was created prior to anomaly 33 (say at ca. 90 m.y. B.P.). The sedimentary sequence on Goban Spur can be subdivided into four layers which can be tentatively correlated with the stratigraphic succession on the Meriadzek Terrace (IPOD sites). Such a correlation suggests that the lowermost sediment layer (?Jurassic-Albian) represents a tectono-sedimentary rift infill, and that Layers 2–4 (Upper Cretaceous to Quaternary) were deposited during slow epeirogenic downwarping of the plateau and that the sedimentary processes involved both draping and strong current moulding. The relatively buoyant nature of Inner Goban Spur has inhibited the accumulation of a thick post-rifting sedimentary sequence (700–1000 m), and has shielded the Intermediate Zone from downslope mass movements of material. This has resulted in the accumulation of an anomalously thin post-rift stage outer margin sediment prism (ca. 1000 m) compared to most continent rises (up to 10 km).

    Description: A bathymetric map of the deep-sea floor off southeastern Africa shows the Agulhas Plateau to be separated from the continental margin of southeastern Africa by a narrow (50 km) elongate depression, the Agulhas Passage, which acts as a deep-water connection between the Agulhas and Transkei basins. Three regionally developed sediment layers occur in the deep (〉 4500 m) Transkei Basin/Agulhas Passage area. With the aid of a simple ocean crust sinking/carbonate compensation level (CCL) model these layers are related to the sedimentation history of the area. The model suggests that acoustic basement (Horizon X) represents Lower Cretaceous limestones draped over oceanic basement, and that this is overlain by an acoustically transparent sequence of pelagic/terrigenous material (Horizon A) that was deposited during a lengthy period (95 m.y.) beneath the carbonate compensation level. Post-Late Miocene sedimentation (Horizons B and C) has probably taken place above the CCL. Local sedimentation has always been influenced by strong sea-floor currents, but since middle Palaeogene times these currents have operated on a regional scale and have generated numerous large ridge and billow-like bed forms.

    Description: Many occurrences of mineral resources in ocean water, on the ocean floor and in its deeper parts have long been well-known. This is readily understandable, because numerous ancient mineral products which are exploited on land were originally formed in marine milieus as far back as the Precambrian , e.g., marine sedimentary iron ores, rock salt, potassium, phosphate and manganese , as well as petroleum and natural gas. This book deals with ores in sediments, and in sedimentary and volcanic rocks. According to the Concise Oxford Dictionary (Fowler and Fowler , 1964), ore is defined as "solid native mineral aggregate from which valuable constituents not necessarily metal may be usefully extracted". Therefore , in tllis chapter only mineral resources of inorganic origin in ocean water and on the ocean floor are discussed and not those of organic derivation, although the existence of petroleum, natural gas and, to some extent, of coal in the subsurface of the ocean shelves is of greater economic importance. The amount of oil and gas produced in 1969 represented more than 90% by value of all mineral resources obtained from the oceans and ocean floors. Ore deposits in bed-rock formations of the shelf region, such as those which are exploited near Cornwall (England) and Newfoundland for example, are also irrelevant, as these are merely extensions of discoveries on the nearby mainland. The purpose of this chapter is to give a general review of the (inorganic) mineral resources of the oceans and the ocean floors . In this respect, not only are the economically important products which are already in use discussed, but also those materials which, in their oceanic environment, can become of economic value in the near or more remote future. For a better understanding of the existence of such materials, some deposits have also had to be reviewed which will not become of economic value . Since some contributions in this book are specifically dedicated to Recent marine ferromanganese deposits and Recent phosphorite deposits, these mineral resources are only briefly discussed in tllis chapter. (For details on Recent marine and lacustrine manganese deposits see Chapters 7 and 8 by Glasby/Read and by Callender/Bowser, respectively, in Volume 7.)     Description: Thick sediments (maximum of at least 4900 m) infill the Natal Valley, which lies between the coast of South Africa/Mozambique and the Mozambique Ridge. Eight physiographic provinces are recognised in the valley, and their boundaries can be related to well-defined sediment thickness or facies discontinuities within the basin infill. The acoustic stratigraphy of the area is established by reference to two regionally developed reflecting horizons, which, on the basis of previously published borehole and seismic data, are tentatively identified as mid-Cretaceous (McDuff) and mid-Cainozoic (Angus) hiatuses or important facies boundaries. Sedimentation began in the Natal Valley before mid-Cretaceous times and since then sediment dispersion has been strongly influenced by the disposition of large basement (? volcanic) highs: the approximately NE—SW Almirante Leite and Naudé ridges, and the larger N—S Mozambique Ridge. There is abundant evidence that sedimentation in the vicinity of these ridges has been current-controlled since at least mid-Cainozoic (Angus) times. The two main terrigenous sediment input points have been the Tugela and Limpopo rivers, which have large sediment cones adjacent to their mouths.

    Description: The exchange of inorganic nutrients; ammonium, nitrate and reactive phosphate between burrows of the infaunal polychaete Nereis virens Sars and the overlying water was assessed using V-shaped sediment cores. Exchange was determined by monitoring ventilation current and nutrient concentration of in- and excurrent water. Ammonium supply appeared independent of overlying water concentrations, showing a constant release of 0.5 μmol·h−1 (for a 2-g individual + burrow system) at concentrations from 2 to 87 μM. Of this release ≈40% originated from worm excretion, and the rest from microbial mineralization. Nitrate and phosphate exchange appeared very sensitive to overlying water concentrations, having equilibrium (zero flux) at 10–15 and 3 μM, respectively. Below these concentrations nitrate showed a slight release (due to nitrification), whereas phosphate was released at a rate of 3.2 × 10−2 μmol·h−1 at 1 μM (mineralization and desorption). Above equilibrium they both were removed during water passage through worm burrows, reaching 0.4 μmol·h−1 for nitrate at 107 μM (nitrate reduction) and 3.7 × 10−2 μmol·h−1 for phosphate at 5.6 μM (adsorption processes). The burrow system apparently acted as a buffer for phosphate and, to some degree, nitrate in the overlying water. At the study site (Norsminde Fjord estuary) nereid burrows were estimated to increase the sediment-water interface 150%. About 17% of the water column was cycled through the sediment by Nereis each day. The worm + burrow system was estimated to release 95 μmol· m−2·h−1 ammonium to the overlying water, which was ≈76–90% of the total release of ammonium from the sediment (30–36% was worm excretion).

    Description: Acoustic basement lies at an average of between 6.0 and 6.5 sec two-way time below sea level in the southern Rockall Trough and northern Porcupine Abyssal Plain. The overlying sedimentary succession reaches maximum thicknesses of at least 4.0 sec, and can be divided by 3 regionally-developed seismic reflecting horizons, which are used as a framework to establish an acoustic stratigraphy for the area by selecting three “type” seismic sections. These reflectors are named, in ascending order, Shackleton, Charcot and Challenger. The area is crossed by E—W basement high structures, the Clare Lineament (which may be an easterly extension of the Charlie Gibbs Fracture Zone), that separates the Porcupine Abyssal Plain from the eastern part of southern Rockall Trough. Under the latter, the post-Shackleton acoustic sequence is thickened, as if dammed to the north of the Clare Lineament, whilst a further thickening, above reflector Charcot, occurs along a NE—SW line somewhat farther north into the southern Rockall Trough. This can also be related to shallow-lying acoustic basement features. Pre-Shackleton sediments overlie a very irregular basement topography. The acoustic characters of the various sediment packages are described and it is speculated that major changes in the sedimentary environments took place across reflectors Shackleton and Challenger, the latter probably establishing the modern bottom current circulation patterns. No ages can be unequivocally assigned to the main reflectors, but previously published data suggest a late Eocene—Oligocene age for Challenger. Possible lavas or sills are identified in the succession between reflectors Shackleton and Charcot.

    Description: Isopach asymmetry, and sediment component changes in DSDP cores from the SE Atlantic (Orange Basin) support the hypothesis of major drainage system changes in SW Africa during late Cretaceous—Cenozoic time. This involved alternations in the use of the 28°S (modern Orange River) and 31°S (modern Olifants River) exit points across the western escarpment by rivers carrying run-off from the Upper Orange/Vaal catchment areas, as well as radical re-organizations of internal drainage geometry. It is postulated that during late Cretaceous times the 28°S exit was used, with the Middle Orange River following a course in the interior well to the south (up to 150 km) of its modern channel. Sediment discharge rates from this river were relatively high (at least 10 × 106 m3 yr−1), and resulted in rapid advancement of the continental margin sediment prism west of the mouth by large-scale slumping. The Palaeogene Orange/Vaal river exit was via the 31°S escarpment crossing, and during the later part of this period, the Cape Canyon was cut across the continental shelf and slope. A significant reduction in sediment discharge (to 2.0 × 106 m3 yr−1) suggests that the Lower Tertiary climate for SW Africa was drier than that of late Cretaceous times. However, aridity did not commence until late Miocene times, when the Orange/Vaal discharge had switched back to the 28°S exit. Modern sediment discharge rates (6.5 × 106 m3 yr−1) are relatively high and reflect soil erosion caused by agricultural activity. The two major alterations in exit point of the Orange/Vaal (late Cretaceous—early Tertiary, and late Oligocene—early Miocene) are related to periods of low sea level, which promoted river capture adjacent to the western escarpment. An additional factor in the first course change may have been the disruption of the Middle Orange channel by late Cretaceous igneous intrusions. Less important internal reorganizations of the drainage system are postulated in late Miocene—Pleistocene times. Economic implications for offshore diamond distribution are briefly mentioned.

    Description: The causes of the growth and collapse of the large Pleistocene ice sheets is a topic of intense scientific debate. The amount of new data and ideas has been prodigious during the last ten years. This review concentrates on the shifting patterns of glacial advance and shrinkage during the last Glaciation. We also examine reconstructions of conditions during the maximum of this Glaciation about 18,000 BP, and the mechanisms that might have caused the rapid collapse of many of the world's ice sheets between 18,000 and 8000 BP. Our paper focuses on the North Atlantic sector because it is there that the major Pleistocene ice sheets grew, developed, and retreated.

    Description: Large Neogene slumps have affected over 260,000 km2 of the outer continental margin and adjacent Cape Basin off southwestern Africa. Individual structures cover areas up to 68,700 km2 and proximally are commonly composed of huge rotated sediment blocks up to 450 m thick and several kilometers across. Seismic shocks, possibly in conjunction with lower-slope undercutting by bottom-current erosion, are suggested as possible trigger mechanisms for these features which are all thought to be post-Pliocene (possibly Pleistocene) in age. Older slumps are also recognized along the margin and four cycles of sedimentation/slumping are identified: early Upper Cretaceous (I); late Upper Cretaceous (II); Palaeogene (III); and Neogene (IV). In the main part of the Orange Basin depocentre (west of Childs Bank) the Cretaceous slump styles are thought to represent Mississippi delta-type down-slope sediment cascades (with reverse faulting and mud diapirism) over 1 km thick which resulted from very rapid dumping of terrigenous material from the Orange River. Cainozoic slumps show a different tectonic style and locus and this is thought to reflect a change in sedimentation patterns which resulted from lower terrigenous input onto the margin, higher biogenic/authigenic sedimentation, and slowed crustal subsidence. A connection possibly exists between low sea level stands and the Cainozoic episodes of slumping.

    Description: Enrichment cultures were prepared with different media for phototrophic bacteria from four species of marine sponges, collected from oxic coastal waters near Split (Yugoslavia). We obtained pure cultures of six strains of Chromatiaceae and two strains of Rhodospirillaceae by agar shake dilution. The Rhodospirillaceae were identified as Rhodopseudomonas sulfidophila and a marine form of Rhodopseudomonas palustris. TheChromatiaceae were identified as Chromatium vinosum, Chromatium gracile, Chromatium minutissimum. Ectothiorhodospira mobilis, and a Chromatium species, which in some respects resembles Chromatium minus. The occurrence of strictly anaerobic phototrophic bacteria in aerobic sponges is discussed with respect to nutrition and possible syntrophism

    Description: M. Dunbar (1957) called attention to the existence of a small circular polynya about 50 m in diameter in Cambridge Fiord in northern Baffin Island for which there was no obvious explanation. Other small polynyas are known in arctic fjords which are usually the result of turbulent mixing in areas of strong currents (Sadler 1974), but Cambridge Fiord is 100 km long, its tidal range is small, and the polynya is situated within 300 m of the delta face at the head of the fjord so that strong turbulence is very unlikely. The annual reappearance of the polynya in late winter is confirmed by a series of aerial survey photographs taken by the Royal Canadian Air Force between 1952 and 1957 and also by reports from Inuit hunters from Pond Inlet. It is first seen within about two weeks of 15 March appearing in exactly the same position each year as a circle with a diameter of about 40 m. Over a period of about a week, a lead extends from the polynya to the shore and open water is visible in the tide crack for several hundred metres either side of the shore end of the lead. The lead, unlike the polynya, changes its position from year to year, but once formed it remains fixed until general break-up (Figure 1).

    Description: Rhodopseudomonas globiformis is able to grow on sulfate as sole source of sulfur, but only at concentrations below 1 mM. Good growth was observed with thiosulfate, cysteine or methionine as sulfur sources. Tetrathionate supported slow growth. Sulfide and sulfite were growth inhibitory. Growth inhibition by higher sulfate concentrations was overcome by the addition of O-acetylserine, which is known as derepressor of sulfate-assimilating enzymes, and by reduced glutathione. All enzymes of the sulfate assimilation pathway. ATP-sulfurylase, adenylylphosphate-sulfotransferase, thiosulfonate reductase and O-acetylserine sulfhydrylase are present in R. globiformis. Sulfate was taken up by the cells and the sulfur incorporated into the amino acids cysteine, methionine and homocysteine. It is concluded, that the failure of R. globiformis to grow on higher concentrations of sulfate is caused by disregulation of the sulfate assimilation pathway. Some preliminary evidence for this view is given in comparing the activities of some of the involved enzymes after growth on different sulfur sources and by examining the effect of O-acetylserine on these activities.

    Description: The ability to use adenosine 5′-phosphosulfate (APS) or 3′-phosphoadenosine 5′-phosphosulfate (PAPS) as the substrate for the initial reductive step in sulfate assimilation has been tested in most of the known Rhodospirillaceae species and in some chemotrophic bacteria. Improved and optimized methods for the synthesis and purification of the sulfonucleotides APS and PAPS are described. The production of acid volatile radioactivity from 35S-APS and 35S-PAPS was measured under various conditions in the presence and absence of non-labeled sulfate. Specific differences in the ability to reduce APS or PAPS were observed among the Rhodospirillaceae species and also the chemotrophic bacteria. APS was found to be the substrate of the thiolsulfotransferase in Rps. acidophila, Rps. globiformis, Rm. vannielii, Rc. purpureus, R. tenue, Rps. gelatinosa, in Alcaligenes eutrophus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. PAPS was the substrate in Rps. capsulata, Rps. sphaeroides, Rps. sulfidophila, Rps. palustris, Rps. viridis, R. rubrum, R. fulvum, in Paracoccus denitrificans and in several Enterobacteriaceae. The presence of different enzymatic systems for sulfate reduction in the Rhodospirillaceae family is compared with their taxonomical grouping and their possible phylogenetic relatedness.

    Description: The mechanism of sulfate assimilation was investigated in Rhodopseudomonas sulfidophila, a bacterium able to grow either photoautotrophically, with sulfide as electron donor, or photoheterotrophically with sulfate as sole sulfur source. ATP sulfurylase, adenosine-5′-phosphosulfate kinase, 3′-phosphoadenosine-5′-phosphosulfate sulfotransferase, thiosulfonate reductase and cysteine synthase were present. Reduced sulfur compounds, especially sulfide and sulfite repressed all steps of sulfate activation and reduction including sulfate uptake. Adenosine-5′-phosphosulfate kinase activity in contrast to the other activities was high in the presence of cysteine or reduced glutathione in the growth medium. Sulfur was incorporated into the cellular sulfolipid from sulfate and also from reduced sulfur compounds like cysteine and thiosulfate. The activity of 3′-phosphoadenosine-5′-phosphosulfate sulfotransferase was rapidly lost during gel filtration or dialysis. From comparison with other sulfotransferases and from the specific cofactor requirement for the enzyme of R. sulfidophila it is concluded that two different low molecular weight cofactors are required in this system. A reaction sequence is proposed involving thioredoxin as the reductant of another dialysable low molecular weight cofactor, that binds to the protein.

    Description: A new purple nonsulfur bacterium was isolated from enrichment cultures of a sulfide-containing marine lagoon. The bacterium is similar to Rhodopseudomonas capsulata and is described as a new species of the genus Rhodopseudomonas: Rhodopseudomonas adriatica. Cells are non-motile, 0.5–0.8 μm by 1.3–1.8 μm, and multiply by binary fission. Intracytoplasmic membranes are of the vesicular type. The photosynthetic pigments are bacteriochlorophyll a and carotenoids of the spheroidene group. Growth is possible anaerobically in the light and at low pO2 in the dark. Biotin and thiamine are required as growth factors. A wide variety of organic compounds, as well as sulfide and thiosulfate, are used as photosynthetic electron donors. Sulfide is oxidized to elemental sulfur, which is subsequently converted to sulfate, whereas thiosulfate oxidation occurs without measurable intermediate. Rhodopseudomonas adriatica is unable to assimilate sulfate, growth is only possible in the presence of a reduced sulfur compound.

    Description: Seven strains of five species of the genus Ectothiorhodospira were characterized by oligonucleotide cataloguing of their 16S rRNA in order to determine the phylogenetic relationship to one another and to other phototrophic purple bacteria. All representatives of Ectothiorhodospira are members of that line of descent defined by phototrophic purple sulfur bacteria and relatives, showing a moderate relationship to those phototrophic organisms forming globules of elemental sulfur inside the cell (Chromatium and relatives). The 5 Ectothiorhodospira species fall into two subgroups. E.halophila, E. halochloris and E. abdelmalekii form one, E. mobilis, E. shaposhnikovii and the unnamed strain BN 9906 form the second subgroup. Within the two subgroups the strains are closely related, while the degree of relatedness found between members of the two subgroups is more distant.

    Description: Radiative transfer modelling for a coupled ocean-atmosphere system near 685 nm indicates a sufficiently high fluorescence signal of the chlorophyll a transmitted to the top of the atmosphere. However, only the shortwave half is seen at the top of the atmosphere, the longwave half is fully masked by atmospheric oxygen and water vapour absorption. The impact of atmospheric aerosol extinction on the signal transmission is almost negligible. The Hα line of the sun, atmospheric water vapour absorption, and chlorophyll absorption near 670 nm influence radiative transfer in the shortwave tail of the fluorescence line making the search for a baseline in order to eliminate the background radiation a difficult task.

    Description: A new bacteriochlorophyll b containing phototrophic bacterium was isolated from extremely saline and alkaline soda lakes in Egypt. Enrichment and isolation were performed using a synthetic medium with high contents of sodium carbonate, sodium sulfate and sodium chloride. Photoautotrophic growth occurred with hydrogen sulfide as photosynthetic electron donor. During oxidation of sulfide to sulfate extracellular elemental sulfur globules appeared in the medium. Cells were also capable to grow under photoheterotrophic conditions with acetate, propionate, pyruvate, succinate, fumarate or malate as carbon sources and electron donors. Under these conditions sulfate was assimilated. Optimal growth under the applied experimental conditions occurred at a total salinity of 14–27%, a pH-range between 8.1 and 9.1 and a temperature between 47°C and 50°C. The cells were 0.5–0.6 μm wide and, depending on cultural conditions, 2.5–8.0 μm long; they were spiral shaped, multiplied by binary fission and were motile by means of bipolar flagella. Intercytoplasmic photosynthetic membranes were present as stacks. Bacteriochlorophyll b was the main photosynthetic pigment; small amounts of carotenoids were mainly present as glucosides of rhodopin and its methoxy derivative. The new organism is described as Ectothiorhodospira halochloris.

    Description: A geochemical rock- and soil-sampling program was carried out in the vicinity of eight concealed “Cyprus type” deposits, occurring in marginal mafic to intermediate metapillow lavas of the Troodos Ophiolite Complex. The mineralization of massive and stockwork sulfide ore is characterized by the predominance of pyrite, intergrown with less chalcopyrite and minor amounts of sphalerite. Background values of Hg are in the range of 8–12 ppb for soils and 3–6 ppb for surface rocks. Anomaly/background ratios of 10:1 (soils) and 5:1 (rocks) have been found only, where Hg migrated along channels formed by faults cutting shallow-seated mineralization. Here, Hg sometimes shows significant correlations with Cu, Zn, Ba and exceptionally with Co. However in one case an Hg anomaly in soils and surface rocks was detected directly over a deposit. The use of Hg as indicator element for these types of deposits is therefore limited. Buried mineralization may be delineated more distinctly by Cu, Zn and Ba.

    Description: Data presented and discussed here were collected continuously during April/May 1975 in the Bornholm Basin of the Baltic Sea. Sedimentation rates of particulate matter were recorded with 5 multisample sediment traps from different depths in the water column at 2 positions 170 km apart. Current meter data collected during the same period and depths indicated that the positions remained hydrographically distinct during the investigation. Particulate matter from the euphotic zone including diatom cells formed the bulk of the material collected by all traps. This flux of organic particles to the bottom was unimpeded by the strong density stratification present in the water column. The upper traps always collected less material than lower ones. This paradox has been ascribed to diminishing current speeds with depth, concomitant with an increase in sinking rates of phytoplankton and phytodetritus. Both factors influence the sampling efficiency of sediment traps, which are thought to have underestimated actual sedimentation rates here. A time lag of 2 to 3 weeks in bloom development seemed responsible for the characteristic differences between the two positions. The phase of major sedimentation at one position covered about 18 days, and a distinct sequence in the composition of the material collected by the 6 glasses of each trap indicated phases of a progressively deteriorating phytoplankton population in the water column contributing the particulate material. A total of 6.2 g C m-2 in 34 days was recorded at this station. Apart from a trap situated in an oxygen deficient layer which collected 0.44 g C m-2 of zooplankton corpses, zooplankton mortality was overestimated by the traps. Large-scale sedimencation of “fresh” organic matter produced by the spring bloom is probably a regular feature in areas with low over-wintering zooplankton populations and, as such, possibly has a direct stimulatory effect on growth and reproduction of the benthos.

    Description: The Middle Triassic carbonate series of the Hochstaufen-Zwieselmassif reflect the last stage of a northward progradation of a wide southern reef platform extending into the attached northern basin. Regional facies differentiation was caused by differences in the morphology of the basin. A massive central reef core, exhibiting clear ecological zonation, developed along the slope of the slightly deeper eastern part of the basin. The shallower western parts, however, were quickly filled up by forereef debris and overlain by sediments of the rapidly spreading lagoon. A typical grapestone facies includes intercalations of vadose pisolitic crusts, thus indicating a shallow marine platform environment, which was sporadically interrupted by areas of subaerial exposure. Various sediment types occurring along the platform margin reflect synsedimentary mass movements. These were induced by tectonic disturbances caused by different rates of subsidence between the rapidly subsiding platform and the slowly subsiding basin. Forereef rocks which have been entirely lithified were affected by various stages of internal brecciation during this process. In contrast, basinal sediments which were semilithified or patchily cemented exhibit plastic deformation (slumping) and subsequent disintegration into intraformational breccias and debris flows. Turbidites were induced in cases of higher pore water saturations. All these mass mobilisations took place on gentle slopes. This assumption is supported by the observation of initial reef growth flourishing on protected areas of the foreslope. Along a gentle slope, differential rates of subsidence can easily be balanced by plastic deformation and dislocation of basinal material. This is supported by the fact that no prominent synsedimentary fault system could be observed along the platform margin. The facies differentiation of the central reef core is substantiated by a clear eclogical zonation of organisms. The lower, more protected portions of the central reef belt were occupied by theTubiphytes zones. Along the reef front the Coral-Solenoporacean biocoenoses found favorable living conditions. The high energy sediments of the reef flat exhibit a highly diverse Calcisponge—Hydrozoan—Coral community. Towards backreef areas a small belt was inhabited by a typicalThecosmilia —Thaumatoporella biocenosis. Die mitteltriadischen Karbonatserien des Hochstaufen-Zwieselmassives im Mittel-abschnitt des Alpennordrandes dokumentieren die jüngste Ausbreitungsphase einer ausgedehnten südlichen Riffplattform gegen ein nördlich vorgelagertes Becken. Die Entwicklung eines ausgeprägten Reliefs innerhalb des beckens verursachte eine starke regionale Faziesdifferenzierung. In den geringfügig tieferen östlichen Beckenabschnitten entwickelte sich ein Riffgürtel mit deutlicher Zonierung, während in den flacheren westlichen Beckenarealen über Vorriffsedimenten direkt eine lagunäre Entwicklung folgt. Zyklische Einschaltungen von vadosen Pisolitkrusten in eine überwiegende Grapestonefazies weisen den lagunären Ablagerungsraum als flachstmarine von zahlreichen Auftauchbereichen durchsetzte Plattform aus. Entlang des Plattformrandes dokumentieren zahlreiche Sedimenttypen synsedimentäre Massenbewegungen. Diese resultieren aus tektonischen Turbulenzen verursacht durch differentielle Absenkungsraten zwischen rasch absinkender Plattform und nur geringfügig absinkendem Becken. Diese Massenbewegungen führen in den vollständig lithifizierten Vorriffsedimenten zu unterschiedlichen Stadien von Internbrekziierung. Die meist nur partiell oder fleckenhaft zementierten Beckensedimente reagieren hingegen auf die gleichen Beanspruchung mit plastischer Deformation. Rutschfalten, intraformationale Brekzien. Debris Flows und schließlich proximale Turbidite dokumentieren zunehmende Deformation und Dislociierung. All diese Massenverlagerungen fanden entlang eines nur geringfügig geneigten Plattformabhanges statt. Dies wird durch das Aufblühen von initialem Riffwachstum in verschiedenen Abschnitten des Beckenabhanges dokumentiert. Aufgrund des geringfügigen Neigungswinkels des Plattformabhanges konnten die differentiellen Absenkungsraten im wesentlichen durch plastische Deformation und Massenverlagerung des Beckenmaterials aufgefangen werden. Daher kam es auch nicht zur Ausbildung von tiefreichenden Störungssystemen entlang des Plattformrandes. Die fazielle Differenzierung des Zentralriffbereiches korrespondiert mit einer ausgeprägten ökologischen Zonierung. Der untere geschütztere Abschnitt des Zentralriffgürtels wird von derTubiphytee-Zone eingenommen. Entlang der Riff-front etablierte sich eine Korallen-Solenoporaceen Biocoenose, während die hochenergetischen Sedimente des “reef flats” eine hochdiverse Kalkschwamm— Hydrozoen—Korallenvergesellschaftung aufweisen. Gegen das Rückriff folgt ein schmaler Gürtel mit einer typischen Thecosmilien-Thaumatoporellen Biocönose.

    Description: The luminescent flashing capabilities and swimming behavior were examined for two species of small midwater squids (Pterygioteuthis microlampas and P. giardi). Recently captured squid were placed in a small aquarium, where their movements and luminescent flashes could be recorded with an image intensifier, a photomultiplier tube and associated equipment. Flashing behavior was initiated by disturbing the squid with an electrical shock. The following 4 behaviors were observed: (1) a short flash and a rapid departure from the electrode; (2) a short flash and a delayed, slow departure from the electrode; (3) a longer flash persisting after a rapid departure from the electrode; (4) a longer flash when departure was prevented by continuing the shock. Luminescent flashes probably have a general defensive function, discouraging or disrupting an attack by potential predators, and within this context there may exist numerous strategies involving flashes.

    Description: Ammonium regeneration, nutrient uptake, bacterial activity and primary production were measured from March to August 1980 in Bedford Basin, Nova Scotia, Canada, a eutrophic environment. Rates of regeneration and nutrient uptake were determined using 15N isotope dilution and tracer methodology. Although primary production, nutrient uptake and ammonium regeneration were significantly intercorrelated, no relationship was detected between these parameters and heterotrophic activity. The average contribution of ammonium to total nitrogen (ammonium+nitrate) uptake was similar in the spring and in the summer (approximately 60%). On a seasonal average basis, 36% of the phytoplankton ammonium uptake could be supplied by rapid remineralization processes. In spite of the high average contribution of NH4 regeneration to phytoplankton ammonia uptake, there is indirect evidence suggesting that other NH4 sources may occasionally be important.

    Description: Although European boreal shores are inhabited by only a relatively small number of oligochaete species, the life histories and reproductive strategies of these species vary considerably. Growth in naidid populations mainly depends on asexual reproduction (paratomy, fragmentation) within a short period of individual life spans, whereas sexual outbreeding plays only a minor role. Naidid populations are characterized by considerable fluctuations of abundance. Aquatic and mesopsammic tubificids represent a ‘conservative’ type of sexual reproduction within well defined breeding periods. Population structure is fairly stable. Enchytraeids show a variety of improvements of the sexual outbreeding scheme which lead to an amazing plasticity. Other forms of reproduction such as parthenogenesis and fragmentation seem to be of greater importance in enchytraeids. The flexible adaptability of development and reproductive capacity in naidids and enchytraeids is mainly controlled by habitat conditions and population size.     Description: Anhand hundertjähriger Meßreihen wurden langfristige Salzgehaltsänderungen in der Unterweser und ihre möglichen Ursachen untersucht. Dabei wurde angestrebt, die natürlichen und die anthropogenen Einflüsse auf den Salzgehalt zu trennen. Trotz des unvollständigen Datensatzes konnten der Einfluß des Einzugsgebietes und Salzgehaltsschwankungen des angrenzenden Meeresgebietes nahezu eliminiert werden. Wegen der langzeitigen Änderungen der Gezeiten in der Nordsee waren genaue Aussagen über die Auswirkung der in den letzten hundert Jahren in der Unterweser durchgeführten Baumaßnahmen auf den Salzgehalt nicht möglich. Unsere Ergebnisse geben Hinweise für moderne Meßnetze zur Bestimmung der Wasserqualität.

    Description: A suite of marble specimens from the Sierra Alhamilla (Spain), deformed to large strains under natural conditions at about 300° C shows distinct variations in microstructure and fabrics. It can be demonstrated that the development of crystallographic preferred orientations and grain shape fabrics are strongly dependent on recrystallized grain size. This is interpreted to reflect the relative importance of various deformational mechanisms. Superplasticity seems to have a sharp upper grain size limit at 10–15 /smm. Within the power law creep regime, deformation in fine grained aggregates is probably dominated by diffusional, in coarser ones by dislocation mechanisms. The transition is a gradual one, and may span a grain size range of 30 /sm.

    Description: Two megameter long XBT sections passing through the Atlantic between the Iberian Peninsula and the equatorial Brazilian shelf, and between the Peninsula and the Cape region of South Africa were obtained during supply cruises to the antarctic in November 1980 and March 1981. Most of the individual probes reached an observation depth of nearly 800 m allowing statements on the thermal stratification and zonation of theWarmwassersphäre in the open ocean. Our new data are compared with a number of earlier long sections. As a general result we identify five zones dividing different hydrographic regions. Zone 1 is characterized by the clear influence of the Mediternean Undercurrent on the lower boundary of theWarmwasserphäre creating nearly thermostatic conditions below 300 m off Portugal. The adjacent zone 2 is identical with the Subtropical Convergence, where theWarmwassersphäre reaches its maximum depth (15°C isotherm at about 300 m). We call the equatorial region zone 3 and present an improved scheme of its current system and its thermal stratification. Zone 4 is marked by the Benguela Current and its northern extension. In a final zone 5 we show the influence of the Agulhas Current extension on the stratification.

    Description: The squid Loligo opalescens (Cephalopoda, Mollusca) was reared in artificial sea water in a closed system consisting of two 1300-l circular tanks. When the squids reached mantle lengths of 20 to 30 mm, they were transferred to a 10 000-l closed system raceway. From hatching, mantle length increased exponentially at a mean rate of 1.69% per day throughout the experiment. The largest and longest-lived squid attained a maximal size of 77 mm mantle length in 8 months. Only live food organisms, which consisted of copepods, other crustaceans and fishes, were accepted by the squids. Mortality, attributed to starvation and fin damage, was greatest during the first 20 days and again between days 45 and 70.

    Description: Faunal structure is described for the planktonic molluscs of the Middle Atlantic Bight based on two years of seasonal data from the continental shelf. Collection and taxa groups are constructed using numerical classification and reciprocal averaging ordination. Discriminant analysis is used to relate surface collection groups to physical variables, then taxa group distribution among these collection groups is analyzed by nodal fidelity analysis. The areal distribution of dominant species is presented by season, as is their surface temperature-salinity distribution. Four communities are recognized on the continental shelf. A subarctic community, including Limacina retroversa, Paedoclione doliiformis, and Clione limacina, is advected down the central shelf region from the northeast. A Gulf Stream community of weak vertical migrators, including Limacina trochiformis, Cavolinia longirostris, Creseis conica, Atlanta peroni, and A. gaudichaudi, is introduced onto the shelf in occasional intrusions across the shelf-edge front. A depth-limited warm-water community of strong vertical migrators, including Limacina inflata, L. bulimoides, L. lesueuri, and Cavolinia inflexa is generally confined offshore of the 100-m isobath since the extent of their daily vertical migration is greater than the bottom depths on the continental shelf. A coastal community, including the larvae of Loligo pealei and of Ensis directus is found in coastal water of local origin and is generally confined within a coastal boundary layer.

Die riffernen Zyklen umfassen mächtige Dasycladaceen-oder Schlickbänke und geringmächtige Zwischenlagen mit Loferiten, Stromatolithen und Peritidalbrekzien. In höheren Profilsequenzen schalten sich zahlreiche syngenetische Karsthorizonte mit einem sehr vielfältigen Strukturinventar ein. Die Verkarstung verursachte entscheidende Veränderungen im Gefüge der Riff-und Lagunenkarbonate des Wettersteinkalks. Epigenetische Dolomitisierungsvorgänge im oberflächennahen und im tief versenkten Karststockwerk scheinen die wichtigsten Prozesse bei den Veränderungen des Gesteinsgefüges der unterschiedlichen Faziesbereiche gewesen zu sein.

    Description: The cause of the climatically controlled fluctuations in the carbonate content of deep-sea sediments remains the subject of uncertainty and debate. Three variables are involved: supply of biogenic carbonate, loss by dissolution, and dilution by non-carbonate phases. It is suggested that 230Th, which is produced in the ocean at a constant rate provides a reliable reference for measuring variations in rate of sedimentation on a regional scale. Results of a preliminary analysis based on published data indicate that, for depths at and above the lysocline, the carbonate fluctuations observed in cores from the North Atlantic Ocean are due primarily to variations in the terrigenous clay input, which was 2–5 times higher during glacials than during interglacials. Carbonate deposition appears to have been somewhat reduced during glacials, but probably not by more than a factor of 2. From published 230Th232Th profiles it appears that the South Atlantic Ocean also received increased inputs of terrigenous clay during glacial periods.

    Description: Statoliths of the short-finned squid Illex illecebrosus were chemically analyzed to define their chemical composition and surveyed by scanning electron microscope to differentiate internal structural patterns. X-ray diffraction data demonstrated that L Illecebrosus statoliths were composed principally of CaCQ in the aragonite crystal form. The crystals occurred in a protein matrix to form incremental patterns which radiated from the nucleus to the edge of the statoliths. The protein matrix comprised approximately 5% of the statolith by weight. The protein was principally composed of acidic amino acids. A high abundance of aspartic acid in the protein matrix indicated that the matrix would function as a template in the initiation and acceleration of the crystal growth of CaCO. The rhythmic microstructural patterns, constructed of aragonite crystals in the protein matrix, wer e suggested to be daily in formation and subsequent growth estimations were in agreement with known life history information. The stable isotopic composition of the carbonate of L illecebrosus statoliths suggested that oxygen may be deposited in isotopic equilibrium with the surrounding environment while carbon appeared to be related to biological processes. The information recorded in the statotiths as incremental growth and stable isotopic composition could provide valuable insights into the ecological history of squid.

    Description: In two closely spaced moorings in the Kiel Bight, four different current meterstwo rotor current meters (Aanderaa and Vector averaging), an acoustic current meter (designed by Gytre), and a pendulum current meter (designed by Niskin) were moored for 22 days. The Vector averaging current meter (VACM) was used as reference instrument on one mooring with the floatation at 7 m depth. The floatation of the second mooring was at 5 m depth in the first 17 days of the experiment, but in 2.7 m depth in the last 5 days to make their mooring more effected by surface waves. The Niskin wing current meter was most effected by wave-induced mooring motion. The Gytre instrument showed the smallest surface-wave effects. The vector variances of this instrument in 7.4 m depth on the surface-wave effected mooring and those of the VACM in 10 m depth on the reference mooring were about equal.

    Description: Deep sea sediments contain more Cu, Ni, Ba, B etc., than transport of detrital terrigenous matter (TM) can explain. Longdistance transport in dissolved from is of no importance for many of these elements. Marine biological matter (BM) is enriched in Cu, Ni, Ba, B etc. Conservative mixing models, using BM and TM as inputs show that the compositional variations in pelagic sediments can be explained by these sources. Such mixing models have been used to estimate how the influx of BM and TM have varied with time, and to what extent different elements ares upplied by BM and TM. The results show that in Cenozoic Equatorial Pacific sediments CaCO₃, opaline silica, B, Ba, and Cu are predominantly biogenous. It is probable that also P and Ni belong to this group of elements, whereas almost all Al, Ti, Zr, V and Mn are delivered by TM or some volcanic processes. The accumulation rates (AR) for the biological constituents reached maxima during the L. Oligocene and the Miocene, and minima during the U. Oligocene and the Pleistocene; some AR from the Oligocene and the Miocene being 3-6 times higher than at present. The accumulation rate patterns for opaline silica, Ba and B co-vary, whereas the AR for CaCO₃ show another time dependance pattern. These AR-patterns are probably partly due to climatic variations. Plankton in Pacific Equatorial waters incorporate much more Cu, Ni, etc., than is required for the particulate transport of these elements to the ocean floor. This suggests that transport in particulate form of BM is an important source of Cu, Ba, B, etc. for the deep sea floor.

    Description: DSDP cores from areas of low (Site 505) and high heat flow (Site 504 B) near the Costa Rica Rift, together with seismic profiles from the Panama Basin, have been studied to determine the relationship between: (1) carbonate content and physical and acoustic properties; and (2) carbonate content, carbonate diagenesis and acoustic stratigraphy. Except for ash and chert layers, bulk density correlates strongly and linearly with carbonate content. Velocity is uniform downcore and only small variations at a small scale are measured. Thus an abrupt change in carbonate content will cause abrupt changes in acoustic impedance and should cause reflectors that can be detected acoustically. A comparison of seismic profiler reflection records with physical properties, carbonate content and reflection coefficients indicates that the main reflectors can be identified with ash layers, diagenetic boundaries, and carbonate content variations. Diagenesis of carbonate sediments is present at Site 504 B in a 260 m-thick ooze—chalk—limestone/chert sequence. These diagenetic sequences occur in areas of higher heat flow (200 mW m−2). Seismic profiler records can be used to map the extent and depth of these diagenetic boundaries.

    Description: Seismic, lithostratigraphic, faunal, and isotopic evidence from the western and northern North Atlantic indicates that formation of northern sources for strongly circulating bottom water began in the late Eocene to early Oligocene. The widely distributed reflector R4 correlates with an unconformity eroded along basin margins at the Eocene/Oligocene boundary. This change in abyssal regime also correlates with a major benthic foraminiferal turnover in the deep southern Labrador Sea (DSDP Site 112) and with a faunal reorganization in the Bay of Biscay. The principal bottom-water source probably was of Arctic origin; it entered the Norwegian Sea following separation of Greenland and Spitsbergen and flowed south across the Greenland-Scotland Ridge through the Faeroe-Shetland Channel and possibly across a sill east of Greenland. This flow may have been supplemented by dense Arctic water entering the basin via Nares Strait and Baffin Bay, and by cooling and sinking of saline surface water south of the Greenland-Scotland Ridge and in the Labrador Sea. Current-controlled sedimentation and erosion, often of a chaotic nature, continued through the Oligocene above reflector R4, but the general intensity of abyssal circulation is thought to have decreased. Above reflector R2 (upper lower Miocene) current-controlled sedimentation became more coherently developed, and a major phase of sedimentary drift development was initiated. We interpret this to be a result of a further general reduction and especially a stabilization of the abyssal circulation, possibly linked with degeneration of numerous fracture-zone conduits that previously funnelled bottom water across the Reykjanes Ridge. The gross nature of the circulation has not changed substantially since the middle Miocene, although it has been punctuated by further climatic and tectonic events.

    Description: Glass separates from 115 ash layers derived from the Kamchatkan (DSDP Site 192; 34 layers), the eastern Aleutian (DSDP Site 183; 56 layers) and the Alaska Peninsula (DSDP Site 178; 25 layers) volcanic arcs have been analyzed for up to 28 elements. In addition, the abundance and diversity of associated mafic phenocrysts have been evaluated. The resulting data set has made possible an evaluation of the late Miocene to Recent changes in composition of ashes derived from North Pacific volcanic arcs and of the factors controlling the evolution of highly siliceous magmas. We find no evidence for a general transition from arc tholeiite to calc-alkalic magma parentage of ashes derived from the volcanic arcs during the last 10 m.y., but instead find 0.1- to 0.5-m.y. intervals during which particular types of volcanism are prevalent. Most convincing is the transition from arc tholeiite to calc-alkalic for ashes derived from Kamchatka during the last 0.8 m.y., a change believed to be associated with a landward shift in the site of magma generation. Considered together, ashes derived from North Pacific volcanic arcs have been becoming more siliceous during the last 1.5 m.y. and may be associated with accelerated subduction during the same time interval. Hydrous phenocrysts (e.g., biotite) are typically associated with low-silica deep-sea ashes, but not with terrestrial volcanic rocks of comparable silica contents, suggesting the important role of water in the evolution of siliceous magma. REE patterns and relative abundances of mafic phenocrysts demonstrate the importance of fractional crystallization in controlling the evolution of highly siliceous arc magmas. REE increase with increasing silica, but become less concentrated in ashes with SiO2 〉 64%. Eu anomalies increase throughout the SiO2 range. Initial fractionation is dominated by clinopyroxene and plagioclase with amphibole strongly influencing fractionation above 64% SiO2.

    Description: Petrographic examination of amygdules and veins associated with moderately altered pillow basalts dredged from the Peru Trench has revealed that a consistent pattern of mineral crystallization has occurred. This sequence is: (1) green, weakly pleochroic clay (R.I. 〉 1.56); (2) dark yellowish brown, non-pleochroic clay (R.I. 〉 1.56); (3) light yellowish brown to colorless, fibrous, weakly pleochroic clay (R.I. 〈 1.56); and (4) calcite or celadonite. Chemical and X-ray diffraction analyses suggest that all clay mineral amygdule and vein fillings are dominated by intimate mixtures of an Fe-rich saponite and nontronite with very small admixtures of serpentine and illite. It is argued that sequential mineral fillings of fractures and vesicles may provide significant information about the chemistry of circulating interstitial fluids. For the pillow basalts studied the first-formed clays were enriched in nontronite, thereby suggesting Fe-rich fluids. These in turn were followed by saponite-rich clays and calcite. The change from Fe-and Mg-rich fluids to dominantly Ca-rich fluids is thought to correspond to a change from mafic mineral alteration to plagioclase alteration in the pillow basalts. An increase in the Fe3+/Fe2+ ratio of clays toward the centers of vesicles may indicate a change toward a more oxidizing environment of alteration.

    Description: Five separate exposures of oceanic basalts were dredged in the vicinity of the Peru-Chile Trench between 9° and 27°S latitude. Each dredge is dominated by abundant pillow basalts. Approximately ten of the most unaltered, glassy and fine-grained samples were selected for detailed chemical and petrographic analyses from each dredge area. All basalts recovered in the Peru-Chile Trench are olivine and quartz-normative tholeiites that are believed to have formed at the now extinct Galapagos Rise 30–50 m.y. ago. Detailed chemical analyses of the basalts, including major and selected trace and rare earth elements, indicate that considerable compositional variability exists both within each of the dredged areas as well as between areas. Most of the inherent chemical variability observed within particular basement sections appears consistent with the concept of temporal evolution of magma bodies at a former spreading center by shallow-level fractional crystallization involving primarily plagioclase and olivine. In contrast, important chemical differences between the dredged areas suggest compositional heterogeneities in the mantle source regions. Our results indicate that although shallow-level fractionation has brought about large changes in composition of basalts in each area, compositional trends are distinct and appear to reflect original mantle-derived compositional differences.

    Description: Thirty-four ash layers of Pleistocene and Pliocene age from DSDP Site 192, northwestern Pacific Ocean, have been subjected to detailed chemical and optical study to evaluate: (1) the chemical and optical variability in glass shards from deep-sea ash layers, and (2) secondary changes brought about by prolonged exposure to seawater. Glass shards from approximately half of the ash layers studied were found to have uniform compositions which approach the precision of the microprobe chemical analyses, whereas the remainder are compositionally diverse (e.g., SiO2, variations of 5–15% among shards from the same ash layer) and appear to be the eruptive products of compositionally zoned magma chambers. Optical studies of glass shards confirm the absence of devitrification or the formation of pervasive secondary alteration products. By contrast, chemical studies suggest that the glass shards have experienced progressive hydration with possible minor ion exchange of K, Mg, Ca and Si. The hydration occurs rapidly and leads to a rather uniform water content of 4.5–5% after several hundred thousands of years exposure to seawater. Step-wise heating dehydration experiments, optical effects, and published'oxygen isotope studies indicate that the water of hydration is incorporated uniformly within the glass. Systematic chemical differences between electron microprobe analyses of glass shard interiors and corresponding bulk chemical study by atomic absorption lead us to postulate that glass shard margins have undergone a minor chemical exchange with major cations in seawater. They have gained 0.10–0.20 wt. % K20, MgO, and CaO while losing a corresponding amount of Si2O. Although the glass shards from DSDP Site 192 are hydrated and may have experienced subtle, surficial ion exchange, we stress that they are the most chemically representative samples available of magmas that were explosively erupted from volcanic arcs.

    Description: Several tissues (e.g. kidney, blood, digestive gland) in oceanic cephalopods which do not exhibit in vivo bioluminescence, luminesce when homogenized in the presence of air or when simply exposed to air in a vial (blood). The source of the luminescence appears to be a luciferin: treatment of kidney homogenates and blood with a photophore extract presumably containing luciferase resulted in a 20-fold increase in light production. Luminescence was also found in the renal fluid, which may be the source of luminescent clouds produced by squids. The variability in luminescence found in some tissues of cephalopods appeared to be related to feeding. Luminescence was also detected in the digestive glands of midwater octopods.

    Description: The means of detecting downwelling light for counterillumination in several midwater animals has been examined. Eyes and extraocular photoreceptors (drosal photosensitive vesicles in the enoploteuthid squid Abraliopsis sp. B and pineal organs in the myctophid fish Myctophum spinosum) were alternately exposed to overhead light or covered by a small opaque shield above the animal and the bioluminescent response of the animal was monitored. Covering either the eyes or the extraocular photoreceptors resulted in a reduction in the intensity of counterillumination. Preliminary experiments examining the bioluminescent feedback mechanism for monitoring intensity of bioluminescence during counterillumination in the midwater squid Abralia trigonura indicated that the ventral photosensitive vesicles are responsible for bioluminescent feedback.

    Description: A complete set of linearly independent relationships among the different cross spectral components obtained from pairs of moored instruments is derived which can be utilized to test whether or not the observed fluctuations within the internal wave frequency band represent a field of propagating internal waves. A further complete set of relationships is derived which enables to test whether or not the internal wave field is horizontally isotropic and (or) vertically symmetric. These relations are compared with corresponding relations for alternative models (standing internal wave modes, three-dimensional isotropic turbulence) and their capability to discriminate between the various models is investigated. The tests are applied to a set of data for which it is found that the observed fluctuations are consistent with both propagating and standing internal waves whereas isotropic turbulence must be rejected for the most part of the internal wave frequency band.

    Description: Natural phytoplankton from Lake Constance was exposed to competition experiments in continuous culture at 6 different molar rations of PratioSi as potentially limiting nutrients. As predicted by theory there was competitive exclusion of all species but one at single nutrient limitation, and coexistence of two species in steady state when P was limiting for one and Si for the other species. In one case coexistence of three species occurred. Equilibrium species composition, which stabilized after 3 to 6 weeks of cultivation, was independent of the species composition of the inoculum and only controlled by the nutrient regime. Comparability of experimental results and field observations is discussed.
