Notizen: Abstract Box schemes (finite volume methods) are widely used in fluiddynamics, especially for the solution of conservation laws. In this paper two box-schemes for elliptic equations are analysed with respect to quadrilateral meshes. Using a variational formulation, we gain stability theorems for two different box methods, namely the so-called diagonal boxes and the centre boxes. The analysis is based on an elementwise eigenvalue problem. Stability can only be guaranteed under additional assumptions on the geometry of the quadrilaterals. For the diagonal boxes unsuitable elements can lead to global instabilities. The centre boxes are more robust and differ not so much from the finite element approach. In the stable case, convergence results up to second order are proved with well-known techniques.

Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Summary A bioassay of vitamin K is described, based on the prothrombin clotting time of 3-week-old, vitamin-K-depleted, and cumatetralyl-sensitized male broiler chicks, using a homologous thrombokinase preparation. With this test it could be shown that the diacetate and dibutyrate esters of menadiol are vitamin-K-active. The bioactivity of menadione from these menadiolesters amounted to about 70 % of the standard menadione from a coated menadione sodium bisulfite (Dohyfral). Menadiol seems to be temperature-resistant under such conditions, whereby two uncoated MSB preparations lost about 60 % of their activity.

Notizen: Abstract We introduce a concept for approximately efficient solutions in vector optimization and compare it with another recent concept given in [8]. Further, we study relations between the set of approximately efficient solutions of a vector optimization problem and the approximate solutions of a corresponding parametric surrogate optimization problem. Finally, we prove stability properties for the scalar surrogate problem.

Notizen: Abstract The structure of solutions to the nonlinear parametric programming problem with a one dimensional parameter is analyzed in terms of the bifurcation behavior of the curves of critical points and the persistence of minima along these curves. Changes in the structure of the solution occur at singularities of a nonlinear system of equations motivated by the Fritz John first-order necessary conditions. It has been shown that these singularities may be completely partitioned into seven distinct classes based upon the violation of one or more of the following: a complementarity condition, a constraint qualification, and the nonsingularity of the Hessian of the Lagrangian on a tangent space. To apply classical bifurcation techniques to these singularities, a further subdivision of each case is necessary. The structure of curves of critical points near singularities of lowest (zero) codimension within each case is analyzed, as well as the persistence of minima along curves emanating from these singularities. Bifurcation behavior is also investigated or discussed for many of the subcases giving rise to a codimension one singularity.

Notizen: Abstract We prove that theε-optimal solutions of convex optimization problems are Lipschitz continuous with respect to data perturbations when these are measured in terms of the epi-distance. A similar property is obtained for the distance between the level sets of extended real valued functions. We also show that these properties imply that theε-subgradient mapping is Lipschitz continuous.

Stabilität und Konvergenz des neuen Differenzenverfahrens werden analysiert. Numerische Vergleiche mit bestehenden Differenzenschemata sprechen klar zugunsten des neuen Verfahrens.
Notizen: Abstract A time-discrete pseudospectral algorithm is suggested for the numerical solution of a nonlinear third order equation arising in fluidization. The nonlinear stability and convergence of the new scheme are analyzed. Numerical comparisons with available finite-difference methods are also reported which clearly indicate the superiority of the new scheme.

Notizen: Abstract In a study covering 3 years, experiments were carried out in order to determine the feasibility of producing a microsporidian pathogenNosema marucae in the spotted stalkborerChilo partellus. A maximum yield of 4.9×108 spores/larva (equivalent to 3.1×1010 spores/g fresh larval body weight) was obtained in 3rd instar larvae. It is considered that the production is inexpensive and can be readily adapted for small scale pathogen propagation systems in the tropics.

Notizen: Abstract To address the possibility that proliferative disorders may originate from interactions between multiple populations of proliferating and maturing cells, we formulate a model for this process as a set of coupled nonlinear first order partial differential equations. Using recent results for the asymptotic behaviour of the solutions to this model, we demonstrate that there exists a region of coupling coefficients, maturation rates, and proliferation rates that will guarantee the stable coexistence of coupled cellular populations. The analysis shows that increases in the coupling between populations may ultimately lead to a loss of stability. Furthermore, the analysis indicates that increases (decreases) in the maturation and/or proliferation rates above (below) critical levels will lead either to instability in the populations or the destruction of one population and the persistence of the other.

Notizen: Abstract The response of male European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis (Hübner) to synthetic pheromone lures containing various isomeric blends of the sex pheromone 11-tetradecenyl acetate was measured in 13 counties in North Carolina. The blends consisted of either 3% Z (‘E strain’), 97% Z (‘Z strain’), or 35% Z (‘hybrid’) 11-tetradecenyl acetate. Response to E strain lures predominated in those counties located in the Coastal Plain (east) of the state, while response to the Z strain pheromone was dominant in the west. A zone of overlap of these broad strain distributions appears to occur in the eastern Piedmont. Within this zone there was substantial response to both E and Z blends. The proportion of these responses changed considerably between generations within years as well as between years. Significantly higher capture rates in hybrid baited traps in parts of the overlap zone may be indicative of increased rates of hybridization between the E and Z strains.

Notizen: Abstract The diel flight periodicity of the nocturnal moth Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) (Lepidoptera;Pyralidae) was measured in the laboratory using an actograph and in the field with suction traps. Females showed almost no flight activity on the night of eclosion. Flight activity of mated females peaked before midnight, the period of peak oviposition activity. Male peak activity occurred after midnight coinciding with female eclosion. Presence or absence of females did not affect when or how long males were active. Data on flight activity and reproductive behaviour are discussed in relation to the use of pheromones to protect maize.

Notizen: Abstract This study examined the impact of irrigation water on certain aspects of an insect-plant relationship in the field including the assessment of plant-mediated water effects on an herbivore's development, survival, and behavior, and plant damage parameters and host tissue water status. Maize (Zea mays L.) plants were arranged in a randomized complete block design in the field over two years in North Carolina (NC). Four blocks were subjected to three different irrigation treatments initiated ca. one week before anthesis: optimal, intermediate, deficit water supply. Each plant was infested with one (1986) or two (1987) black head stage, E-race European corn borer [Ostrinia nubilalis (Hübn.)] (ECB) egg masses at tasselling. ECB development, tunnelling site, and survival as well as plant tissue water status (tissue % water contents [θ] & leaf water potentials [Ψ]) were recorded through July. The irrigation effect on ECB parameters was slight and variable. Internal stalk temperatures of optimal plants were consistently cooler than their deficit counterparts (1 day-degree/day). With degree-days included as an explanatory variable in the analyses, there were no significant irrigation effects on the ECB parameters, except for total proportion of ECB's bored into maize plant parts. More ECB's bored into drier plants than in optimal plants; however, this trend was not significant in 1987. Plant water indices showed that though Ψ responded to irrigation, there were only minor changes in tissue θ, particularly in view of the larger diurnal tissue changes observed and the relatively high, sustained stalk θ levels seen over all treatments. Examination of ECB pupal θ confirmed that dietary water changes were minor or non-limiting to the insects' developmental physiology, because pupal θ was not sensitive to the irrigation treatments. Though water supply changes have drastic developmental and agronomic consequences for the maize plant, little or no changes were seen in the ECB feeding environment. Furthermore, a plant damage model was developed whereby the total % of ECB's tunnelled into maize was related to the mean larval age. The implications of this model on the understanding of ECB tunnelling behavior, damage potential, and pest management is noted.

Notizen: The distribution of assembly workstations enables assembly operations to be done in parallel, while the multiple routing of parts in flexible assembly systems allows the opportunistic scheduling of assembly operations. This paper presents an assembly planning system, called the Assembly Coplanner, which automatically constructs an assembly partial order and generates a set of assembly instructions from a liaison graph representation of an assembly based on the extraction of preferred subassemblies. Assembly planning in Coplanner is carried out by the co-operation of multiple planning agents, such as the geometric reasoner, the physical reasoner, the resource manager and the plan coordinator, under the constraints of finding a cost-effective assembly plan in a flexible assembly system. The Coplanner identifies spatial parallelism in assembly as a means of constructing temporal parallelism among assembly operations. This is achieved in the following way: (1) the selection of a set of tentative subassemblies by decomposing a liaison graph into a set of subgraphs based on feasibility and difficulty of disassembly; (2) the evaluation of each of the tentative subassemblies in terms of assembly cost represented by subassembly selection indices; and (3) the construction of a hierarchical partial order graph (HPOG) as an assembly plan. A case study applying the Coplanner to a mechanical assembly is illustrated in this paper.

Notizen: Abstract The thermal oxidative stability of various ABS/PC compounds was studied by means of the chemiluminescence technique. Similarly to pure ABS, Irganox 1076 and Irganox MD 1024 perform as moderate antioxidants in ABS/PC and (ABS/PC + lubricant) blends. Neither Tinuvin 144, Irgaphos 168, nor their mixture affects the durability of the ABS/PC blend. At the same time, (Irgaphos 168 + Tinuvin 144) in combination with Irganoxes was found to provide a noticeable enhancement in durability to the (ABS/PC + lubricant) system. Titanium dioxide pigments by themselves have only a slight influence on the oxidative stability of the ABS/PC blend. Durability of the (ABS/PC + pigment) and (ABS/PC + lubricant) systems was found to be the same and the overall protective effect of Irganox 1076 was similar in both the (ABS/PC + lubricant) and the (ABS/PC + lubricant + pigment) systems. Certain modifiers significantly improve the durability of the ABS/PC compounds, although their function may differ in the systems with and without pigments.

Notizen: Abstract The influence of lubricants, UV stabilizers, antioxidants, and metal deactivators on the resistance of ABS to thermal oxidation was studied by means of the chemiluminescence technique. Neither of the additives seems to affect significantly the induction period of oxidation. At the same time, the influence of various additives on the oxidation rate constant is remarkably different: the introduction of lubricants and UV stabilizers increases its value, while antioxidants and metal deactivators have the opposite effect. For the particular systems studied durability is decreased in samples containing the lubricant and UV stabilizers and increased in samples stabilized with the antioxidant and metal deactivator.

Notizen: Abstract It has been demonstrated that the logarithm of the stability constant of some monochelated chromium(III) compounds, with structurally similar 1,3-dicarbonylic species, is linearly related to the negative logarithm of the acid ionization constant of the ligand. Graphical and analytical correlations which could be useful in predicting equilibrium constants of chromium(III)-β-diketonates, as well as other first-row transition metal derivatives, have been developed. A quantitative evaluation of the complexes stability has been carried out, providing information about the effects of ligand substituents on the equilibrium constants.

A detailed study of the influence of the pretreatment conditions shows that in order to obtain a high thermal stability (up to at least 960 °C) two parameters are of importance. The removal of both the template and the adsorbed water requires either a low heating rate at atmospheric pressure or a low pressure (less than 3 Torr) when the heating rate is 300 ° per hour.

Notizen: Abstract Given a finite ranked posetP, let α(P) be the maximum size of a subset ofP such that no two elements of it belong simultaneously to some interval ofP and let ϱ(P) be the minimum number of intervals covering all elements ofP. We say thatP has the strong interval stability property (resp. the strong interval covering property) if for each subposetP′ induced by consecutive levels ofP, i.e.,P′=P (l)∪...∪P (u), one has α(P′)=max{|P (l)|, |P (u)|} (resp. ϱ(P′)=max{|P (l)|, |P (u)|}). We prove these properties for several classes of posets and discuss some general facts concerning the numbers α(P) and ϱ(P), e.g., NP-completeness and min-max relations.

Notizen: Abstract We investigate the stability of waiting-time derivatives when inputs to a queueing system-service times and interarrival times-depend on a parameter. We give conditions under which the sequence of waiting-time derivatives admits a stationary distribution, and under which the derivatives converge to the stationary regime from all initial conditions. Further hypotheses ensure that the expectation of a stationary waiting-time derivative is, in fact, the derivative of the expected stationary waiting time. This validates the use of simulation-based infinitesimal perturbation analysis estimates with a variety of queueing processes. We examine waiting-time sequences satisfying recursive equations. Our basic assumption is that the input and its derivatives are stationary and ergodic. Under monotonicity conditions, the method of Loynes establishes the convergence of the derivatives. Even without such conditions, the derivatives obey a linear difference equation with random coefficients, and we exploit this fact to find stability conditions.

Notizen: Abstract Traditionally, manufacturing systems have mainly been treated as either job shops or flow shops. In job shops, parts may arrive with random routes, with each route having a low volume. In flow shops, the routes are fixed and acyclic, as in assembly lines. With the advent of semiconductor manufacturing plants, and more recently, thin film lines, this dichotomy needs to be expanded to consider another class of systems, which we call “re-entrant lines”. The distinguishing feature of these manufacturing systems is that parts visit some machines more than once at different stages of processing. Scheduling problems arise because several parts at different stages of processing may be in contention with each other for service at the same machine. There may be uncertainties in the form of random service or set-up times, as well as random machine failures and repairs. The goal of scheduling is to improve performance measures such as mean sojourn time in the system, which is also known as the mean “cycle-time”, or the variance of the cycle-time. In this paper we provide a tutorial account of some recent results in this field. We describe several scheduling policies of interest, and provide some results concerning their stability and performance. Several open problems are suggested.

Notizen: Abstract The stability of a polling system with exhaustive service and a finite number of users, each with infinite buffers is considered. The arrival process is more general than a Poisson process and the system is not slotted. Stochastic continuity of the stationary distributions, rates of convergence and functional limit theorems for the queue length and waiting time processes have also been proved. The results extend to the gated service discipline.

Notizen: Abstract Numerical simulations are made within the framework of the plane restricted three-body problem, in order to find out if stable orbits for planets around one of the two components in double stars can exist. For any given set of initial parameters (the mass ratio of the two stars and the eccentricity of their orbit around each other), the phase-space of initial positions and velocities is systematically explored. In previous works, systematic exploration of the circular model as well as studies of more realistic (elliptic) cases such as Sun-Jupiter and the nearby α Centauri and Sirius systems, large stable planetary orbits were found to exist around both components of the binary, up to distances from each star of the order or more than half the binary's periastron separation. The first results presented here for the η Coronae Borealis system confirm the previous studies.

Notizen: Abstract Symmetry properties of positive solutions of a Dirichlet problem for a strongly nonlinear parabolic partial differential equation in a symmetric domainD ⊂ R n are considered. It is assumed that the domainD and the equation are invariant with respect to a group {Q} of transformations ofD. In examples {Q} consists of reflections or rotations. The main result of the paper is the theorem which states that any compact inC(D) negatively invariant set which consists of positive functions consists ofQ-symmetric functions. Examples of negatively invariant sets are (in autonomous case) equilibrium points, omega-limit sets, alpha-limit sets, unstable sets of invariant sets, and global attractors. Application of the main theorem to equilibrium points gives the Gidas-Ni-Nirenberg theorem. Applying the theorem to omega-limit sets, we obtain the asymptotical symmetrization property. That means that a bounded solutionu(t) asr→∞ approaches subspace of symmetric functions. One more result concerns properties of eigenfunctions of linearizations of the equations at positive equilibrium points. It is proved that all unstable eigenfunctions are symmetric.

Notizen: Abstract Bifurcation and continuation techniques are introduced as a class of methods for investigating the parametric nonlinear programming problem. Motivated by the Fritz John first-order necessary conditions, the parametric programming problem is first reformulated as a closed system of nonlinear equations which contains all Karush-Kuhn-Tucker and Fritz John points, both feasible and infeasible solutions, and relative minima, maxima, and saddle points. Since changes in the structure of the solution set and critical point type can occur only at singularities, necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a singularity are developed in terms of the loss of a complementarity condition, the linear dependence constraint qualification, and the singularity of the Hessian of the Lagrangian on a tangent space. After a brief introduction to elementary bifurcation theory, some simple singularities in this parametric problem are analyzed for both branching and persistence of local minima. Finally, a brief introduction to numerical continuation and bifurcation procedures is given to indicate how these facts can be used in a numerical investigation of the problem.

Notizen: Abstract A finite number of nodes, each with a single server and infinite buffers, is considered in discrete time. The service may be FIFO and the service times are constant. The external arrivals and the routing decision variables form a general stationary sequence. Stability of the system is proved under these assumptions. Extension to multiple servers at a node and general stationary distributions holds. If the external input is i.i.d. and the routing is Markovian then stochastic ordering, continuity of stationary distributions, rates of convergence, a functional CLT and a functional LIL and various other limit theorems for the queue length process are also proved. Generalizations to multiple servers at nodes, customers with priority, multiple customer classes, general service length and Markov modulated external arrival cases are discussed.

Notizen: Abstract This paper deals with the stability of periodic polling models with a mixture of service policies. Customers arrive according to independent Poisson processes. The service times and the switchover times are independent with general distributions. The necessary and sufficient condition for the stability of such polling systems is established. The proof is based on the stochastic monotonicity of the state process at the polling instants. The stability of only a subset of the queues is also analyzed and, in case of heavy traffic, the order of explosion of the queues is given. The results are valid for a model with set-up times, and also when there is a local priority rule at the queues.

Notizen: Abstract Consider a queueing system where customers arrive at a circle according to a homogeneous Poisson process. After choosing their positions on the circle, according to a uniform distribution, they wait for a single server who travels on the circle. The server's movement is modelled by a Brownian motion with drift. Whenever the server encounters a customer, he stops and serves this customer. The service times are independent, but arbitrarily distributed. The model generalizes the continuous cyclic polling system (the diffusion coefficient of the Brownian motion is zero in this case) and can be interpreted as a continuous version of a Markov polling system. Using Tweedie's lemma for positive recurrence of Markov chains with general state space, we show that the system is stable if and only if the traffic intensity is less than one. Moreover, we derive a stochastic decomposition result which leads to equilibrium equations for the stationary configuration of customers on the circle. Steady-state performance characteristics are determined, in particular the expected number of customers in the system as seen by a travelling server and at an arbitrary point in time.

Notizen: Abstract A sufficient stability condition for the standard token passing ring has been “known” since the seminal paper by Kuehn in 1979. However, this condition was derived without formal proof, and the proof seems to be of considerable interest to the research community. In fact, Watson observed that in the performance evaluation of token passing rings, “it is convenient to derive stability conditions ... (without proof)”. Our intention is to fill this gap, and to provide a formal proof of thesufficient and necessary stability condition for the token passing ring. In this paper, we present the case when the arrival process to each queue is Poisson but service times and switchover times are generally distributed. We consider in depth a gatedl-limited (l≤ ∞) service discipline for each station. We also indicate that the basic steps of our technique can be used to study the stability of some other multiqueue systems.

Notizen: Abstract The non-linear stability of the libration pointL 4 in the restricted problem has been studied when there are perturbations in the potentials between the bodies. It is seen that the pointL 4 is stable for all mass ratios in the range of linear stability except for three mass ratios depending upon the perturbing functions. The theory is applied to the following four cases: (i) There are no perturbations in the potentials (classical problem). (ii) Only the bigger primary is an oblate spheroid whose axis of symmetry is perpendicular to the plane of relative motion (circular) of the primaries. (iii) Both the primaries are oblate spheroids whose axes of symmetry are perpendicular to the plane of relative motion (circular) of the primaries. (iv) The primaries are spherical in shape and the bigger is a source of radiation.

Notizen: Abstract In this paper, we analyze a simple free boundary model associated with solid combustion and some phase transition processes. There is strong evidence that this “one-phase” model captures all major features of dynamical behavior of more realistic (and complicated) combustion and phase transition models. The principal results concern the dynamical behavior of the model as a bifurcation parameter (which is related to the activation energy in the case of combustion) varies. We prove that the basic uniform front propagation is asymptotically stable against perturbations for the bifurcation parameter above the instability threshold and that a Hopf bifurcation takes place at the threshold value. Results of numerical simulations are presented which confirm that both supercritical and subcritical Hofp bifurcation may occur for physically reasonable nonlinear kinetic functions.

Notizen: Abstract The stability and convergence of the solutions of perturbed and regularized variational inequality to the solutions of the primary (unstable a priori) variational inequality with proper monotone operator are investigated. All the objects of inequality: the operatorA, the right-hand partf and the set of constrains Ω are to be perturbed. At the same time no assumptions of boundedness and smoothness of the operatorA are used. The connection between the parameters of perturbations, which guarantees strong convergence of approximate solutions, is established. It is proved that the existence of the solution to the unperturbed variational inequality is necessary and sufficient condition for convergence of the regularized perturbed inequality solutions.

Notizen: Abstract We consider a modification of the standardG/G/1 queue with unlimited waiting space and the first-in first-out discipline in which the service times and interarrival times depend linearly and randomly on the waiting times. In this model the waiting times satisfy a modified version of the classical Lindley recursion. We determine when the waiting-time distributions converge to a proper limit and we develop approximations for this steady-state limit, primarily by applying previous results of Vervaat [21] and Brandt [4] for the unrestricted recursionY n+1=C n Y n +X n . Particularly appealing for applications is a normal approximation for the stationary waiting time distribution in the case when the queue only rarely becomes empty. We also consider the problem of scheduling successive interarrival times at arrival epochs, with the objective of achieving nearly maximal throughput with nearly bounded waiting times, while making the interarrival time sequence relatively smooth. We identify policies depending linearly and deterministically upon the work in the system which meet these objectives reasonably well; with these policies the waiting times are approximately contained in a specified interval a specified fraction of time.

Notizen: Abstract A new approach to the study of delay systems, applicable to physiological control systems and other systems where little information about the time delays is available, is examined. The method is based on the fact that stability information can be deduced from the statistical properties of the probability distribution that encodes the structure of the time delay. The main statistical variables used are the usual expectation parameter,E, and a modified variance, calledrelative variance and denotedR, that is invariant under time scale changes. Recent work of the author has shown that stability often improves asR increases whileE remains fixed. A four-parameter family of delay models is analysed in this paper, and the (E, R) pair is found to be a reliable indicator of stability over the global parameter domain of the family.

Notizen: Abstract The relationship between second generation European corn borer (Ostrinia nubilalis Hübner) egg mass numbers and subsequent field corn damage, as measured by stalk cavity numbers, was studied in 79 fields in northeastern North Carolina over three years. A mean of 0.028 egg masses per plant (645 egg masses/23400 plants) was found over the course of the study. Significant differences in oviposition rate were detected between fields and years. Ca. 85% of egg masses were deposited in a five leaf zone surrounding the primary ear; of these, 89% were found on the lower four leaves in this zone. Egg masses appeared to be distributed randomly within fields but at low rates of incidence, and oviposition was relatively uniform between sampling areas within individual fields. Under moderate to high oviposition pressure (mean number of egg masses per plant over the duration of the oviposition period 〉ca. 0.02), eggs laid during the early phases of the oviposition period account for more subsequent stalk damage than eggs laid during the later phases of the oviposition period. Variations in second generation egg mass numbers accounted for ca. 70% of variation in stalk cavity numbers.

Notizen: Abstract The Newton form is a convenient representation for interpolation polynomials. Its sensitivity to perturbations depends on the distribution and ordering of the interpolation points. The present paper bounds the growth of the condition number of the Newton form when the interpolation points are Leja points for fairly general compact sets K in the complex plane. Because the Leja points are defined recursively, they are attractive to use with the Newton form. If K is an interval, then the Leja points are distributed roughly like Chebyshev points. Our investigation of the Newton form defined by interpolation at Leja points suggests an ordering scheme for arbitrary interpolation points.

Notizen: Abstract This paper deals with adapting Runge-Kutta methods to differential equations with a lagging argument. A new interpolation procedure is introduced which leads to numerical processes that satisfy an important asymptotic stability condition related to the class of testproblemsU′(t)=λU(t)+μU(t−τ) with λ, μ ε C, Re(λ)〈−|μ|, and τ〉0. Ifc i denotes theith abscissa of a given Runge-Kutta method, then in thenth stept n−1→t n :=t n−1+h of the numerical process our interpolation procedure computes an approximation toU(t n−1+c i h−τ) from approximations that have already been generated by the process at pointst j−1+c i h(j=1,2,3,...). For two of these new processes and a standard process we shall consider the convergence behaviour in an actual application to a given, stiff problem.

Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Abstract We prove in this paper the instability, for all n ⩾ 4, of the configurations of relative equilibrium in the n-body problem where the n bodies submitted to newtonian mutual attractions are at the vertices of a regular polypon with n sides. For this proof we show that the equations of variations projected to the n bodies plan P have at least two conjugate characteristic exponents with a strictly positive real part; while these equations projected to an orthogonal axis to P have some solutions with secular terms.

Notizen: Abstract A new class of linear ordinary differential equations with periodic coefficients is found which can be transformed to the Gauss hypergeometric equation, and therefore the monodromy matrices are computable explicitly. These equations appear as the variational equations around a straight-line solution in Hamiltonian systems of the form H = T(p) + V(q), where T(p) and V(q) are homogeneous functions of p and q, respectively.

Notizen: Abstract I have computed proper elements for 174 asteroids in the 1 : 1 resonance with Jupiter, that is for all the reliable orbits available (numbered and multi-opposition). The procedure requires numerical integration, under the perturbations by the four major planets, for 1,000,000 years; the output is digitally filtered and compressed into a “synthetic theory” (as defined within theLONGSTOP project). The proper modes of oscillation of the variables related to eccentricity, perihelion, inclination and node define proper elements. A third proper element is defined as the amplitude of the oscillation of the semimajor axis associated with the libration period; because of the strong nonlinearity of the problem, this component cannot be determined by a simple Fourier transform to the frequency domain. I therefore give another definition, which results in very good stability with time. For 87% of the computed orbits, the stability of the proper elements-at least over 1M yr-is within the following bounds: 0.001AU in semimajor axis, 0.0025 in eccentricity and sine of inclination. Half of the cases with degraded stability of the proper elements are found to be chaotic, with e-folding times between 16,000 and 660,000yr; in some other cases, chaotic behaviour does not result in a significantly decreased stability of the proper elements (stable chaos). The accuracy and stability of these proper elements is good enough to allow a search for asteroid families; however, the dynamical structure of the Trojan belt is very different from the one of the main belt, and collisional events among Trojans can result in a distribution of fragments difficult to identify. The occurrence of couples of Trojans with very close proper elements is proven not to be statistically significant in almost all cases. As the only exception, the couple 1583 Antilochus — 3801 Thrasimedes is significant; however, it is not easy to account for it by a conventional collisional theory. The Menelaus group is confirmed as a strong candidate collisional family; Teucer and Sarpedon could be considered as significant clusters. A number of other clumps are detected (by the same automated clustering method used for the main belt by Zappalà et al., 1990, 1992), but the total number of Trojans with reliable orbits is not large enough to detect many significant candidate families.

Notizen: Abstract The form of the solar radiation pressure on a heliocentric orbiting solar sail is obtained for a finite angular sized and limb darkened solar disk by the use of the radiation pressure tensor. It is found that the usual inverse square variation of the solar radiation pressure is modified by the finite angular size, and to a lesser extent by the solar limb darkening. The actual magnitude of the modification is in itself small, except at close heliocentric distances. However, its existence has implications for the dynamical stability of solar sails both in parked and circular orbital configurations and for the accuracy of trajectory calculations, particularly for sails in the inner solar system.

Notizen: Abstract It is known that an abridged case of the averaged planar general three-body problem, at first-order resonance, is analytically integrated, using an expansion of the disturbing function linear in the eccentricities. There exist different methods with the help of which the integration can be performed. For the first time Sessin and Ferraz-Mello in the years 1981–88 (Sessin, 1981, 1983; Ferraz-Mello and Sessin, 1984; Ferraz-Mello, 1987, 1988) did an analytic integration for the restricted elliptic three-body problem, in terms of the variablesK andH (K=ΣD j e j cos (ψ1−π j ),H=ΣD j e j sin (ψ1−π j ),D j = const, wheree j and π j are, respectively, the eccentricity and the longitude of the periapsis of thei-th planet, ψ1 is the Delaunay's anomaly), which is inconvenient for the analytical investigation of the evolution of the major semi-axesa j , the eccentricitiese j and the resonance phases ϕ j =ψ1−π j . Later, a different method for the analytical integration of the general three-body problem, in the variablesa j ,e j and ϕ j , was considered by the author (Shinkin, 1993). A disadvantage of both methods is the fact that they use non-canonical changes of variables. But there exists a third very beautiful canonical method of analytical integration of the general planetary problem, which is briefly considered in the present paper and allows us to describe the bifurcations of separatrices (i.e. appearance, disappearance, splitting and confluence of separatrices) separating the domains of libration and circulation of the resonance phase on the phase plane in the averaged planar general three-body problem at first-order resonance. The bifurcation parameter is analytically found and plays an important role in a qualitative description of all kinds of motion in the examined problem.

Notizen: Abstract The effects of small external dissipative and disturbing forces on the non-linear planar oscillation of a cable connected satellites system in the central gravitational field of earth have been studied. Typical non-linear oscillation's phenomena arizing from the aforesaid external forces are shown to take place. The presence of these forces enables the application of asymptotic methods of the theory of non-linear oscillations due to Bogoliubov and Mitropolsky to the equation characterizing the non-linear oscillation of the system.

Notizen: Abstract We study the structure of chaos in a simple Hamiltonian system that does no have an escape energy. This system has 5 main periodic orbits that are represented on the surface of section $$(y,\dot y)$$ by the points (1)O(0,0), (2)C 1,C 2(±y c, 0), (3)B 1,B 2(O,±1) and (4) the boundary $$y^2 + \dot y^2 = 1$$ . The periodic orbits (1) and (4) have infinite transitions from stability (S) to instability (U) and vice-versa; the transition values of ε are given by simple approximate formulae. At every transitionS →U a set of 4 asymptotic curves is formed atO. For larger ε the size and the oscillations of these curves grow until they destroy the closed invariant curves that surroundO, and they intersect the asymptotic curves of the orbitsC 1,C 2 at infinite heteroclinic points. At every transitionU →S these asymptotic curves are duplicated and they start at two unstable invariant points bifurcating fromO. At the transition itself the asymptotic curves fromO are tangent to each other. The areas of the lobes fromO increase with ε; these lobes increase even afterO becomes stable again. The asymptotic curves of the unstable periodic orbits follow certain rules. Whenever there are heteroclinic points the asymptotic curves of one unstable orbit approach the asymptotic curves of another unstable orbit in a definite way. Finally we study the tangencies and the spirals formed by the asymptotic curves of the orbitsB 1,B 2. We find indications that the number of spiral rotations tends to infinity as ε → ∞. Therefore new tangencies between the asymptotic curves appear for arbitrarily large ε. As a consequence there are infinite new families of stable periodic orbits that appear for arbitrarily large ε.

Notizen: Abstract This paper investigates the stability of the motion in the averaged planar general three-body problem in the case of first-order resonance. The equations of the averaged motion of bodies near the resonance surface is obtained and is analytically integrated by quadratures. The stability of the averaged motion is analytically investigated in relation to the semi-major axes, the eccentricities and the resonance phases. An autonomous second-order equation is obtained for the deviation of semiaxes from the resonance surface. This equation has an energy integral and is analytically integrated by quadratures. The quasi-periodic dependence on time with two-frequency basis of the averaged motion of bodies is found. The basic frequencies are analytically calculated. With the help of the mean functionals calculated along integral curves of the averaged problem the new analytic first integrals are constructed with coefficients periodic in time. The analytic conditions of librations of resonance phases are obtained.

The construction of periodic solutions near the equilibrium points, by using the Lipaunov theorem of holomorphic integral, is obtained and the necessary and sufficient conditions for the stability of the system are given.

Notizen: Abstract The Sitnikov's Problem is a Restricted Three-Body Problem of Celestial Mechanics depending on a parameter, the eccentricity,e. The Hamiltonian,H(z, v, t, e), does not depend ont ife=0 and we have an integrable system; ife is small the KAM Theory proves the existence of invariant rotational curves, IRC. For larger eccentricities, we show that there exist two complementary sequences of intervals of values ofe that accumulate to the maximum admissible value of the eccentricity, 1, and such that, for one of the sequences IRC around a fixed point persist. Moreover, they shrink to the planez=0 ase tends to 1.

Notizen: Abstract In this paper we deal with the circular Sitnikov problem as a subsystem of the three-dimensional circular restricted three-body problem. It has a first analytical part where by using elliptic functions we give the analytical expressions for the solutions of the circular Sitnikov problem and for the period function of its family of periodic orbits. We also analyze the qualitative and quantitative behavior of the period function. In the second numerical part, we study the linear stability of the family of periodic orbits of the Sitnikov problem, and of the families of periodic orbits of the three-dimensional circular restricted three-body problem which bifurcate from them; and we follow these bifurcated families until they end in families of periodic orbits of the planar circular restricted three-body problem. We compare our results with the previous ones of other authors on this problem. Finally, the characteristic curves of some bifurcated families obtained for the mass parameter close to 1/2 are also described.

Notizen: Abstract It is argued that even for a linear system of ODEs with constant coefficients, stiffness cannot properly be characterized in terms of the eigenvalues of the Jacobian, because stiffness is a transient phenomenon whereas the significance of eigenvalues is asymptotic. Recent theory from the numerical solution of PDEs is adapted to show that a more appropriate characterization can be based upon pseudospectra instead of spectra. Numerical experiments with an adaptive ODE solver illustrate these findings.

Notizen: Abstract A new approach to the integration of vertex singularities is described. This approach is based on a non-uniform subdivision of the region of integration and the technique fits well to the subdivision strategy used in many adaptive algorithms. A nice feature with this approach is that it can be used in any dimension and on any region of integration which can be subdivided into subregions of the same form. The strategy can be applied both to vertex singularities and internal point singularities. In the latter case this can be done without an initial subdivision of the region in order to put the singular point in a vertex. It turns out that the technique has excellent numerical stability properties.

Notizen: Abstract The effect of the August 1987 River Reuss flood event on the phytoplankton biocoenosis in Lake Uri (Urnersee, part of Lake Lucerne, Switzerland) was investigated firstly by comparing biological, chemical and physical data sampled before the event with equivalent data sampled after the event; and secondly by comparing the phytoplankton succession in 1987 with that occurring in the “floodfree” year 1989. As a consequence of the flood, the physical and chemical environment of the phytoplankton was found to have undergone a change which resulted in an alteration in the composition of the phytoplankton community. The phytoplankton community existing previous to the flood event, which had been dominated byTabellaria fenestrata sensu Husted 1930 (K-strategist), was replaced by a biocoenosis characterized mainly by various species of flagellates, which represent a typical spring successional stage (r-strategists). After the externally-imposed perturbation, the return to stable physical and chemical conditions was followed by the re-establishment of the successional stage which had existed before the flood (termed “reversion” by Reynolds, 1980).

Notizen: Abstract Population dynamics of the blackfaced leafhopper, Graminella nigrifrons (Forbes) (Homoptera: Cicadellidae), was studied at five temperatures (18, 21, 24, 27, & 30°C) in the laboratory on seedling maize (Zea mays L.), oats (Avena sativa L.), and the perennial johnsongrass (Sorghum halepense (L.) Pers.). Effects of temperature and host plant on egg to adult mean development time, adult size and weight, and fecundity were determined. Leafhoppers on all three hosts developed fastest at the highest temperature tested (21.3 days), and slowest at the lowest temperature tested (73.2 days). The duration from first to last adult eclosion was shortest at 30°C, (11.5 days) and longest at 18°C (43 days). The sex ratio of males to females did not differ from 1:1, but males developed an average of 1.2 days faster than females on all three hosts. Mean percent development/day ranged from 1.4% at 18°C to 4.7% at 30°C. The relationship of this development rate and temperature was determined using both a linear model and a variable parameter biophysical model. Based on these models, the developmental threshold is estimated at 12–15°C. The lowest temperature yielded larger and heavier adults (312 μg, dry weight) than did the highest temperature (225 μg). Fewer leafhoppers developed on the perennial than the annuals at 30°C and fewer on the annuals than the perennial at 18°C. Our results suggest that early in the season johnsongrass and perhaps other perennials are the superior developmental hosts for this leafhopper, whereas in midsummer when temperatures are highest, annuals are the better hosts.

Notizen: Abstract Oviposition by the African migratory locust, Locusta migratoria migratorioides (Orthoptera: Acrididae), was studied in maize and wheat crops on the Orange Free State Highveld. Maize was shown to be the most important oviposition habitat with peak laying taking place in autumn and early winter when highest pod densities were recorded. Laying was mainly concentrated along the middle of the crop interrows in maize and within clearings in the wheat crop. Despite the uniform layout of these crops, the distribution of egg pods was found to be aggregated. Non-reproductive behaviour, such as locust aggregation, basking and feeding, as well as environmental factors appeared to influence the distribution of egg pods in these crops. Notizen: Abstract The toxicity and anticholinesterase activity of tremorgenic fungal metabolites, territrems, to the corn earworm, Helioverpa zea (Boddie) (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae) were examined. In oral toxicity studies, territrem A significantly inhibited growth by 40% at 25 ppm and by 89% at 250 ppm. Territrem B and an epoxy-derivative significantly inhibited growth by ca. 45% at 250 ppm. Piperonyl butoxide administered orally synergized the toxicity of the territrems tested. In topical toxicity studies, the epoxy-derivative caused 26% mortality and 25% growth retardation at 10 mg/gm insects. Territrem A and B were not significantly lethal, but did reduce growth by 15–20% at 10 mg/gm insect. Paraoxon tested in the same way caused 100% mortality at 25 ppm orally and 10 mg/gm topically. However, all territrems tested in vitro as inhibitors of H. zea head acetylcholinesterase were at least comparable to or were more active than paraoxon. Topically administered epoxy-territrem B also inhibited H. zea head acetylcholinesterase. The potential for development of new insecticides from a territrem lead structure is discussed.

Notizen: Abstract The set of cost inputs for which an optimal solution of the dynamic lot size model remains valid is called stability region. The size of this region may be viewed as a measure of robustness of a solution. It is an expectation that the stability regions shrink with growing time horizons and that they are monotonous in this sense. In the present paper several sufficient conditions implying monotonicity will be studied. The conditions cover the existence of planning and forecast horizons and generalize the results of a previous paper in wich monotonicity results were presented for the case of ordinary planning horizons.

Notizen: Abstract Sizeable data bases are now being routinely generated in a variety of contexts in chemical industry. Statistical investigations of such data bases are aimed both at initially uncovering structure and eventually proposing models, in particular for predicting product quality by the mix or characteristics of the chemical compounds. “Online Multivariate Exploratory Graphical Analysis” (OMEGA) stands for a structured exploratory study of the relationships in a multivariate data set, where, rather than testing for one specific property, as many clues as possible for interesting structures are searched for by different dimension reductions and succeeding interactive graphical analyses. The stability of the projections obtained by the different dimension reduction methods is assessed by simulation producing graphical displays particularly supporting the identification of influential points. The variation of the predictions obtained by the different dimension reduction methods is assessed by cross-validation delivering misclassification rates or cross-validated R2 values. The interpretation of the new coordinates corresponding to dimension reduction is supported by loading simplifications and graphical displays for judging its adequacy. The OMEGA strategy has been found to be an effective tool for routine searching for structure.

Notizen: Abstract The problem of stability of equilibria of a physical pendulum with a nonstretchable thread attached to it is considered from the standpoint of the Lagrange theorem on stability and its inversion. Specific difficulties which one faces when studying an infinite dimensional mechanical system are discussed. A new approach to the study of stability with respect to two metrics is suggested. The influence of resonant phenomena on the motion of the shortened (linearized) system is considered.

Notizen: Abstract A robustness analysis and synthesis for incomplete nonlinear decoupling for a class of nonlinear systems is discussed. Rigid and elastic-joint robot models belong to this class. For the elastic case, a transformation facilitates the robustness analysis under a weak assumption. Charts with H 1- and H ∞- norms of closed-loop disturbance transfer functions of the nonlinear-decoupled system are presented for a robust pole assignment.

Notizen: Abstract This paper explores two practical issues related to the force control of manipulators. The first issue examined is how system stability is effected by commonly occurring manipulator nonlinearities, such as sampled-data, control signal saturation and slip-stick friction. It is shown that discretely implemented force control algorithms can drive the feedback force controlled manipulator into a limit cycle, even for a very small sampling period that by far satisfies Shannon's sampling theorem. The bounds of stability are enhanced by the presence of control signal saturation and slip stick friction. The second issue investigated is the inclusion of a high gain inner position loop as a means to minimize the unpredictability in the steady state error due to slip-stick friction. In order to support the theoretical conclusions, experiments were performed with the PUMP 560 industrial robot testbed facility developed at Colorado State University.

    Notizen: Abstract A functorial filtration GL n =S−1L n $$ \supseteq$$ S0L n $$ \supseteq$$ ⋯ $$ \supseteq$$ S i L n $$ \supseteq$$ ⋯ $$ \supseteq$$ E n of the general linear group GL n, n ⩾ 3, is defined and it is shown for any algebra A, which is a direct limit of module finite algebras, that S−1 L n (A)/S0L n (A) is abelian, that S0L n (A) $$ \supseteq$$ S1L n (A) $$ \supseteq$$ ⋯ is a descending central series, and that S i L n (A) = E n(A) whenever i ⩾ the Bass-Serre dimension of A. In particular, the K-functors k 1 S i L n =S i L n /E n are nilpotent for all i ⩾ 0 over algebras of finite Bass-Serre dimension. Furthermore, without dimension assumptions, the canonical homomorphism S i L n (A)/S i+1 L n (A)→S i L n+ 1(A)/S i+1 L n + 1 (A) is injective whenever n ⩾ i + 3, so that one has stability results without stability conditions, and if A is commutative then S0L n (A) agrees with the special linear group SL n (A), so that the functor S0L n generalizes the functor SL n to noncommutative rings. Applying the above to subgroups H of GL n (A), which are normalized by E n(A), one obtains that each is contained in a sandwich GL′ n (A, ρ) $$ \supseteq$$ H $$ \supseteq$$ E n(A, ρ) for a unique two-sided ideal ρ of A and there is a descending S0L n (A)-central series GL′ n (A, ρ) $$ \supseteq$$ S0L n (A, ρ) $$ \supseteq$$ S1L n (A, ρ) $$ \supseteq$$ ⋯ $$ \supseteq$$ S i L n (A, ρ) $$ \supseteq$$ ⋯ $$ \supseteq$$ E n(A, ρ) such that S i L n (A, ρ)=E n(A, ρ) whenever i ⩾ Bass-Serre dimension of A.

This topological result is deduced from a splitting theorem for pointed Hermitian modules over a cyclic group ring. A stability result for such modules is also proved. This applies to the isotopy classification of locally flat embeddings.

Notizen: Abstract Forty Fusarium isolates obtained from maize fields were screened for moniliformin production on maize kernels. Twelve isolates, including seven of F. subglutinans, were found to produce moniliformin at levels ranging from 0.4 to 64 ppm. Twenty six isolates were also screened for production of deoxynivalenol, diacetoxyscirpenol, T-2 toxin and zearalenone. Of these, 22, including all 11 isolates of F. graminearum, produced zearalenone at levels ranging from 0.1 to 96.0 ppm, while 13 produced T-2 toxin at low levels, (〈1.1 ppm). Deoxynivalenol and diacetoxyscirpenol were each produced by six isolates, also at low levels (〈1.0 ppm). Three isolates of F. graminearum and one of F. sambucinum produced four toxins simultaneously.

Notizen: Abstract A three year field study was conducted at five locations in the Nigerian savanna to evaluate the response of early maturing maize variety to varying rates of K and Zn with a view to establishing the K and Zn requirements for maize production in this zone. Treatments consisted of 4 × 3 factorial combinations of 4 levels of K and 3 levels of Zn. Responses to K and Zn fertilization were sporadic and were obtained only in soils of the Southern Guinea savanna and in the soil formed on sedimentary sandstone. There seem to be no problem at present in soils of the Northern Guinea and Sudan savannas where leaching is less intense. It is inferred from this study that K and Zn deficiences are incipient in the high rainfall soils and in the sandstone derived soils. For these soils, 50 kg K/ha and 2–5 kg Zn/ha is suggested as adequate for an early maturing maize crop. Soil data showed that K and Zn responses can be expected when available K and Zn levels fall below 0.1 meq/100 g and 2 ppm respectively.

Notizen: Abstract Sluijsmans and Kolenbrander developed a simple model to describe the availability of animal manure, assuming a readily available, an easily decomposable and a slowly decomposable N fraction. We tested this model on data from an experiment in which farmyard manure had been applied for eleven successive years to silage maize [Zea mays L.] grown on a light sandy soil. The residual effects of this FYM were then measured by growing Italian ryegrass [Lolium multiflorum Lamk.] in the 12th year. The measured uptake of N by the grass of the FYM residues was then compared with the computed values. The measured amounts of N taken up agreed fairly well with the calculated amounts for applications of 50 and 100 t FYM per ha per year. If the rates of manure application are adjusted to crop requirement, the model shows that the potential, long-term release of N from the residual N fraction of FYM will not exceed 20 kg N per ha. For cattle slurry with a smaller residual fraction, the release will be at most 10% of the total annual N application.

Notizen: Abstract In the Netherlands, pig slurries are processed to improve their fertilizer value as well as handling and application. The relative efficiency index (REI) of N, P and K and the stability of organic carbon (C) in test products of processed pig slurries (PPS) were determined in pot and incubation experiments. The dry and easily manageable PPS were produced according to the Promest procedure. The mineral fraction of total N varied from 60 to 88%. It consisted mainly of nitrate. About 25% of the organic N was rapidly mineralized. The REI of N varied from 66 to 92%. After application REI of P from pelletized PPS varied from 41 to 62% in the first half year. The REI of P in ground but non-pelletized PPS varied from 81 to 100%. The REI of K was estimated to be 100%. PPS contained less easily decomposable organic C than untreated pig slurry due to the anaerobic digestion step in the processing procedure. About 34% of the organic C disappeared as methane and carbon dioxide during processing. It was concluded that processing improved the fertilizer value of PPS compared with that of untreated pig slurry.

Notizen: Abstract It has been suggested that there are several potential benefits of providing nitrogen to cereals via the foliage as urea solution. These include: reduced nitrogen losses through denitrification and leaching compared with nitrogen fertilizer applications to the soil; the ability to provide nitrogen when root activity is impaired e.g., in saline or dry conditions, and uptake late in the season to increase grain nitrogen concentration. Factors that influence the degree of foliar absorption in field conditions have not, however, been clearly defined and losses to the atmosphere and soil can occur. Foliar urea applications may also hinder crop productivity although the explanations for this vary, and include desiccation of leaf cells, aqueous ammonia and urea toxicity, biuret contamination and the disruption of carbohydrate metabolism. It has not yet been determined which one, or combinations, of these mechanisms are most important in field situations. When damage has not been severe, foliar urea applications have increased grain yield, particularly when applied before flag leaf emergence and when nitrogen availability is limiting. Increases in grain nitrogen content are often larger when applications of nitrogen fertilizers to the soil are reduced, and when the urea solution is sprayed either at anthesis or during the following two weeks. It is during this period that foliar urea sprays can be of greater benefit than soil applications with regard to nitrogen utilization by the crop. Increases in wheat grain nitrogen concentration following urea application can improve breadmaking quality. Responses in loaf quality may, however, be variable particularly when increases in grain nitrogen content have been large, and/or when the nitrogen: sulphur ratio in the grain is increased. These circumstances have lead to alterations in the proportions of the different protein fractions which influence breadmaking potential. To exploit the full potential benefits of foliar urea application to cereals, more needs to be known about the mechanisms, and thus how to prevent losses of nitrogen from the foliage, and to reduce the phytotoxic influences of sprays. More information is also required to exploit the reported effects that urea may have on limiting the development of cereal diseases.

Notizen: Abstract In determining root distribution of univariate polynomials with real or complex-valued coefficients, the Bistritz tabular form offers a significant computational advantage. Stability studies of two-dimensional (2-D) discrete-time systems involve univariate polynomials possessing parameter-dependent coefficients, where the parameter takes values on the unit circle in the complex plane. This paper investigates the application of Bistritz tabular form in determining stability of 2-D discrete-time systems, and for this purpose we present two algorithms. Both algorithms utilize a recent result that has established the relationship between Schur-Cohn minors and the entries of the Bistritz tabular form corresponding to a given polynomial. A comparison between the use of the modified Jury table and the Bistritz table in stability checking of 2-D discrete-time systems is also presented.

Notizen: Abstract Field experiments with silage maize during eight years on a sandy soil in The Netherlands, showed that dicyandiamide (DCD) addition to autumn-applied cattle slurry retarded nitrification, thus reducing nitrate losses during winter. Spring-applied slurry without DCD, however, was on average associated with even lower losses and higher maize dry matter yields. Economically optimum supplies of mineral N in the upper 0.6 m soil layer in spring (EOSMN), amounted to 130–220 kg ha−1. Year to year variation of EOSMN could not be attributed to crop demand only. According to balance sheet calculations on control plots, apparent N mineralization between years varied from 0.36 to 0.94 kg ha−1 d−1. On average, forty percent of the soil mineral N (SMN) supply in spring, was lost during the growing season. Hence, the amounts of residual soil mineral N (RSMN) were lower than expected. Multiple regression with SMN in spring, N crop uptake and cumulative rainfall as explanatory variables, could account for 79 percent of the variation in RSMN. Postponement of slurry applications to spring and limiting N inputs to economically optimum rates, were insufficient measures to keep the nitrate concentration in groundwater below the EC level for drinking water.

Notizen: Abstract Theee trials to evaluat the potential of alley cropping in maize production on the low fertility, acidic soils in Northern Zambia are described. Leucaena leucocephala, Gliricidia sepium, Sesbania sesban, Albizia falcataria, Fleminga congesta, and Cassia spectabilis, were grown in alley crops with hybrid maize and soybean. All trials received recommended rates of P and K fertiliser; N fertiliser was applied at three rates as a subplot treatment. One trial received lime before establishment. Only in the limed trial was there a significant improvement in maize yields through alley cropping; when no N fertiliser was applied, incorporation of Leucaena leucocephala prunings resulted in an increase of up to 95% in yields, with a smaller improvement being produced by Flemingia congesta. There was a significant correlation between the quantity of prunings biomass applied and the proportional increase in maize yields over the control treatment. It is suggested that the lack of effect of most of the tree species on crop yields was due to low biomass production. An economic analysis showed that alley cropping with limed Leucaena was only profitable when fertiliser costs were high in relation to maize prices. However, lime is both expensive and difficult to obtain and transport for most small scale farmers in the region, and is therefore not a practical recommendation. It is suggested that future alley cropping research should focus on screening a wider range of tree species, including other species of Leucaena, for acid tolerance and higher biomass production.

Notizen: Abstract Maize growing next toErythrina hedgerows had 44% lower biomass (p〈0.01) and 35% lower N content (p〈0.1) than maize growing in the middle of the alleys. Maize growing next toGliricidia hedgerows had the same biomass but 56% higher N content (p〈0.1) than maize growing in the middle of the alleys. However these differences did not develop until 2 months after sowing of the maize. Spatial variability in soil nitrogen mineralization and mulch nitrogen release did not explain any of the differences in growth or N uptake of the maize with respect to distance from the trees. It is hypothesized that the slower growth of the maize next to theErythrina trees after 2 months is due to increasing light and/or nutrient competition from the trees as the trees recover from pollarding. The apparent lack of competition fromGlirigidia may be due to different rates of regrowth or different shoot and root architecture. A theoretical model is described demonstrating that if a crop is to take advantage of the higher nutrient availability under alley cropping it must complete the major part of its growth before the trees recover significantly from pollarding, and start competing strongly with the crop.

There was a strong correlation between the maize yield and the total amount of nitrogen applied, both from prunings and fertiliser, suggesting that a major reason for the observed benefit from alley cropping, particularly withLeucaena, was due to an improvement in nitrogen supply.Leucaena produced significantly more biomass, and its leaves had higher concentrations of nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium and lower C/N and C/P ratios than did those ofFlemingia. There was also evidence that the trees had a beneficial effect on other soil chemical properties; under the hedgerows, particularly those ofLeucaena, there were higher levels of organic carbon, Mg, K and ECEC, and pH values were also highest. It is suggested that higher levels of organic carbon in the alley crop treatments were responsible for the improvements observed in soil physical properties. Lower bulk density, lower penetration resistance, and a higher infiltration rate and pore volume fraction were measured in the alley crops, although there was no significant change in the soil water release parameters. A deteriorating effect of constant applications of nitrogen fertiliser on soil fertility was observed; as the level of urea application increased, there were significant decreases in Mg, K and pH, increases in Al and soil acidity, and higher penetrometer resistance. These results highlight the urgent need for further research on biological methods of maintaining soil fertility.

Notizen: Abstract A general acid-base equilibrium theory was proposed to explain the formation and stability of the Bi-2223 phase based on the Lewis acid-base theory, and principle of metallurgical physical chemistry. The acid-base nature of oxide was defined according to the electrostatic force between cation and oxygen anion. A series of experimental facts were systematically explained based on the theory: substitution of Bi for Ca in. the Pb-free 2223 phase, and the effect of substitution of the high-valent cation for Bi3+; oxygen-pressure atmosphere, and the heat-schocking technique on the formation and stability of the 2223 phase.

Notizen: Abstract This paper presents a reinforcement connectionist system which finds and learns the suitable situation-action rules so as to generate feasible paths for a point robot in a 2D environment with circular obstacles. The basic reinforcement algorithm is extended with a strategy for discovering stable solution paths. Equipped with this strategy and a powerful codification scheme, the path-finder (i) learns quickly, (ii) deals with continuous-valued inputs and outputs, (iii) exhibits good noise-tolerance and generalization capabilities, (iv) copes with dynamic environments, and (v) solves an instance of the path finding problem with strong performance demands.

Notizen: Summary After a review of the existing state of affairs, an improvement is made in the stability theory for solitary-wave solutions of evolution equations of Korteweg-de Vries-type modelling the propagation of small-amplitude long waves. It is shown that the bulk of the solution emerging from initial data that is a small perturbation of an exact solitary wave travels at a speed close to that of the unperturbed solitary wave. This not unexpected result lends credibility to the presumption that the solution emanating from a perturbed solitary wave consists mainly of a nearby solitary wave. The result makes use of the existing stability theory together with certain small refinements, coupled with a new expression for the speed of propagation of the disturbance. The idea behind our result is also shown to be effective in the context of one-dimensional regularized long-wave equations and multidimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equations.

Notizen: Summary In this paper we rigorously show the existence and smoothness inε of traveling wave solutions to a periodic Korteweg-deVries equation with a Kuramoto-Sivashinsky-type perturbation for sufficiently small values of the perturbation parameterε. The shape and the spectral transforms of these traveling waves are calculated perturbatively to first order. A linear stability theory using squared eigenfunction bases related to the spectral theory of the KdV equation is proposed and carried out numerically. Finally, the inverse spectral transform is used to study the transient and asymptotic stages of the dynamics of the solutions.

Notizen: Summary Contractile actomyosin systems play a central role in the generation of intracellular patterns. Models for pattern formation have benefited greatly from the application of mechanochemical theory. However, investigations of the patterns have been primarily qualitative in nature; the two-dimensional nature of the evolving patterns has not yet been addressed mathematically, nor has the evolution of stable heterogeneous steady-state solutions. We consider these issues, supporting our analytical predictions with numerical simulations in one and two spatial dimensions. We show how, for certain gels, the two and three-dimensional tensor equation which describes a balance of forces can be reduced to a reaction-diffusion equation.

Notizen: Summary Engineering and physical systems are often modeled as nonlinear differential equations with a vector λ of parameters and operated at a stable equilibrium. However, as the parameters λ vary from some nominal value λ0, the stability of the equilibrium can be lost in a saddle-node or Hopf bifurcation. The spatial relation in parameter space of λ0 to the critical set of parameters at which the stable equilibrium bifurcates determines the robustness of the system stability to parameter variations and is important in applications. We propose computing a parameter vector λ* at which the stable equilibrium bifurcates which is locally closest in parameter space to the nominal parameters λ0. Iterative and direct methods for computing these locally closest bifurcations are described. The methods are extensions of standard, one-parameter methods of computing bifurcations and are based on formulas for the normal vector to hypersurfaces of the bifurcation set. Conditions on the hypersurface curvature are given to ensure the local convergence of the iterative method and the regularity of solutions of the direct method. Formulas are derived for the curvature of the saddle node bifurcation set. The methods are extended to transcritical and pitchfork bifurcations and parametrized maps, and the sensitivity to λ0 of the distance to a closest bifurcation is derived. The application of the methods is illustrated by computing the proximity to the closest voltage collapse instability of a simple electric power system.

Notizen: Abstract A new kind of diazafluorenone Schiff base amphiphile has been synthesized from 1,10-phenanthroline. The superior self-assembling properties of the amphiphiles are advantageous for forming surface monolayer and bilayer membranes (BLMs). BLMs formed with these amphiphiles possess very good stability and electrochemical oscillations. The possibility is suggested of developing a new type of chemical sensor with the ability to distinguish various metal ions from the patterns of electrochemical oscillations.

Notizen: Abstract A secondary mutant, derived from an allele of maize alcohol dehydrogenase 1 (Adh1) carrying a Mutator transposable element (Mu1) in its first intron, was reported to exhibit a threefold decrease in ADH enzymatic activity and steady-state RNA levels compared to the original mutant. The original mutant,Adh1-S3034 (abbreviatedS3034), was previously characterized at the molecular level. The derivative, abbreviatedS3034b, has now been cloned; at the DNA sequence level the insertion and surroundingAdh1 sequences are indistinguishable fromS3034. Furthermore, in our lines there is no difference in relative ADH activities between products of the two putative alleles. A comparison of gene expression in heterozygotes obtained by crossing to different tester lines reveals a correlation between the measured decrease in levels of ADH polypeptide produced by the mutant allele and the background in which it is measured; this effect is distinct from any background-related variation in the expression of the progenitor allele. It does not appear to be attributable to alternative patterns of DNA modification. It appears to reflect a background-associated difference in the level of normalAdh1-RNA produced. Thus the previously reported distinction betweenS3034 andS3034b may be due to differences in the extent to which the mutant allele and a given genetic background interact to produce functionalAdh1-RNA.
