    Description: Distribution and abundance of the horned octopus Eledone cirrhosa in the Tyrrhenian Sea are described on the basis of stratified-random bottom trawl surveys in spring and summer of the years 1985–1987. Specimens were caught between 25 and 630 m depth (higher densities between 50 and 200 m depth); mature males were found to prefer deeper bottoms than mature females. Young specimens occurred in spring samples from the Western Ligurian Sea and in summer samples from the Lower Tyrrhenian Sea, but were scarcely represented in the Higher Tyrrhenian Sea. Thus recruitment seems to be progressively delayed later in the season from north to south. The greatest abundance was recorded in the Higher Tyrrhenian Sea; wide seasonal variations of minimum stock biomass estimates have been observed and total biomass decreased from 1985 to 1987 in the surveyed areas.

    Description: An investigation was carried out on the morphology, growth and microstructure of statoliths of 833 specimens of Sthenoteuthis pteropus (Steenstrup) mantle length (ML): 2–548 mm collected in the open waters of the Gulf of Guinea in 1984–1988. Statolith morphology is similar to that of other species of the subfamily Ommastrephinae and is similar to the sibling species S. oulaniensis. Statolith development includes five stages resembling those of Illex illecebrosus and other ommastrephids. Statolith growth is characterized by negative allometry. Increments visible in ground sections of statoliths can be grouped into four main growth zones, differing mainly in colour and increment width. Age and growth rates of S. pteropus were calculated using increment counts. The life span of females of all size groups does not exceed 1 yr, that of males is 1–2 months shorter, probably due to preliminary mating. Instantaneous relative growth rage (G) of paralarvae is high (up to 16% of body weight (BW)). G values for juveniles decline, but remain relatively high (7–8% BW). Juveniles attain 100–110 mm ML by age 100–110 days. G values for adults are the lowest (1.8–2% BW), but daily growth rates reach maximum values (40–70 g per day in large females of 450–500 mm ML). Each ontogenetic phase of S. pteropus corresponds to features of morphology, growth and microstructure of the statolith.

    Description: Using the fault plane mechanisms of the shallow earthquakes occurring along the Hellenic arc and the extent of the intermediate seismic belt, we make a quantitative estimate of the relative motion occurring between the Hellenic arc and the adjacent sea floor. This estimate is then used to evaluate the deformation in the Aegean area and to reconstruct the pattern of motion over the Eastern Mediterranean region for the last 13 m.y. It is shown that this pattern is compatible with the neotectonic and seismicity studies in Aegea. We then discuss the dynamics of the area and propose that, since Serravallian-Tortonian time, Aegea has been spreading gravitationally in front of the southwestward advancing Turkey. The reasons for this gravitational spreading are discussed.

    Description: Mean intracellular pH (pHi) and PCO2 (PiCO2) have been analysed based on pH and total CO2 measurements in tissue homogenates. Tissues were sampled from undisturbed worms (Sipunculus nudus), squid (Illex illecebrosus), trout (Salmo gairdneri), toads (Bufo marinus), and rats. Homogenate metabolism was inhibited by the addition of potassium fluoride and nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA). Model calculations revealed that the influence of dilution, medium buffers, and contamination by extracellular fluids was negligible. In white muscle tissue the resulting pHi values were virtually the same as found in studies using DMO (dimethyloxazolidinedione). If large fractions of mitochondria were present (e.g. in heart muscle), DMO derived pHi values were considerably higher, probably representing overestimates. Homogenate derived pHi values are concluded to represent the effective mean pHi by taking into account pH gradients, and the volumes and buffering of cellular compartments. High time resolution and small variability make this method especially useful to assess rapid changes in pHi, e.g. in exercising animals.

    Description: The periodicity of deposition of growth increments in the cuttlebone of juvenile Sepia officinalis was investigated under controlled conditions for a short period after hatching (19 days). The slope of time elapsed and increment counts was significantly different from 1 indicating that lamellae are not deposited on a daily basis. The relationship between increment counts and juvenile length was, however, highly significant. Also significant were the relationships between the number of growth increments and shell length and increment counts and cuttlebone area. These data show that the number of growth increments is related primarily to the growth rate of the juvenile rather than to its chronological age. Taking into account these data, the cuttlebone lamellae cannot be used for age determination in the juvenile cuttlefish just after hatching.

    Description: The presented data on indirect and direct calorimetry in Halicryptus spinulosus, a species with prominent ecological significance in parts of the Baltic Sea, provide a basis for a better understanding of the metabolic adaptation of these animals to low oxygen availability in their environment. Metabolic rates in H. spinulosus were measured respirometrically as oxygen consumption and calorimetrically as heat dissipation. Oxygen uptake rates are in the range of M O2 = 3.81 ± 1.37 μmol O2·g−1 dry mass·h−1. Upon reimmersion into normoxic seawater after an anoxic incubation of 7 days, the animals exhibit an overshoot of oxygen consumption by a factor of 2.4. It takes at least 2 days for the animals to balance their oxygen consumption to previously measured rates. Direct calorimetry exhibits different strategies of H. spinulosus to cope with declining oxygen and anoxia. During the first 2 transitional days to anoxia in the calorimeter, the animals decreased heat dissipation moderately down to 53.4 and 26%, respectively, of aerobic values. The animals are not necessarily quiescent at the beginning of anoxia, but at the end of the experiments after 14 days metabolic rates have dropped substantially down to ≈2% of normoxic values. These findings are discussed with regard to an effective adaption to frequently changing oxygen regimes in deeper parts of the Baltic Sea.

    Description: CO2 partial pressure in surface water was measured in the Northeast Atlantic and in the Hebride Shelf/North Sea area during a cruise with R.V. Poseidon in June 1991. A mean pCO2 of 303 μatm was found in the Atlantic between 50°N and 60°N. For an atmospheric CO2 content of 357.5 ppm(v) this corresponds to a partial pressure difference of −55 μatm. This supports the view that the subarctic Atlantic is a significant sink within the CO2 cycle between the ocean and the atmosphere. A comparison of our measurements with other data reveals that the pCO2 distribution changes significantly during May/June. This explained by seasonal warming, CO2 exchange with the atmosphere and biomass production. The contribution by each of these processes to the seasonal variations is calculated. It was found that during a plankton bloom the production of biomass is the dominating factor and may lower seawater pCO2 by almost 100 μatm. The shelf areas are charactrized by strong pCO2 gradients which are explained by water exchange with the Atlantic, temperature effects and biomass production.

    Description: Skin and hair samples of harbour seals (Phoca vitulina) found dead along the west coast of northern Germany in 1988 were analysed for total mercury, cadmium and lead. Cadmium and lead concentrations were below the detection limit in most skin samples. The mercury content of the hair (median: 23.1 μg g−1 wet wt) was several magnitudes higher than the mercury content of the skin (0.27 μg g−1 wet wt). Mercury concentrations in hair samples were significantly higher than lead concentrations (0.54 μg g−1 wet wt), which significantly exceeded cadmium levels (0.09 μg g−1 wet wt). Female seals revealed lower cadmium concentrations in the hair than male seals. Accumulations of metals with age were observed for cadmium and lead in hair samples and for mercury in skin samples of male seals. A connection between metal accumulation and pigmentation or rather moult was clearly recognizable.

    Description: The spreading of Mediterranean Water (MW) released through the Straits of Gibraltar is studied with hydrographic data, oxygen, nutrients and for the first time with chlorofluoromethane (CFM, compounds F11 and F12) distributions along seven sections in the Gulf of Cadiz, and with measurements in the Western Alboran Sea and west of the Gulf. The properties of MW entering the Gulf are deduced from CFM-salinity correlations east and west of the Straits as well as from property-depth profiles in the Western Alboran Sea. At the time of the survey, the outflow originated from depths above the salinity maximum of the Intermediate Water in the Alboran Sea. It turned out that the F11/F12 ratio of the outflow is equal to the ratios found in the Atlantic water in the Gulf of Cadiz; thus the ratio carries no time information in the region. A model is developed to describe mixing of the MW undercurrent with overlying North Atlantic Central Water (NACW) from different depths. The contribution of each layer to the mixing is parameterized by a weighting factor, which has to satisfy the balances of potential temperature (θ), CFMs, oxygen and nutrients in the MW undercurrent. It is shown that entrainment of water from shallower depths into the undercurrent is important near the Iberian Continental Shelf. Farther west and south, the undercurrent mainly mixes with water from near the salinity minimum of the NACW. For regions where the undercurrent has left the bottom, additional mixing with North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) has to be taken into account. The percentage of MW in the undercurrent decreases from 76% hear the Straits to about 34% at 7°30′W for the lower core (MI) and about 22–24% for the upper core (Mu). Assuming an outflow of undiluted MW through the Straits of 1.0 Sv, the transport of the undercurrent can be calculated by determining an average dilution factor for each section. The undercurrent transports 2.0 Sv just west of the Straits and 3.6 Sv leave the Gulf of Cadiz. At 36°N, 9°54′W, a meddy with unusually high temperatures and salinities below 500 m was found, covering the density range for both cores, Mu and Ml. From the θ−S characteristics and the evaluated mixing scheme of the meddy it appears to have formed near 7°W in the Gulf, a region up to now not proposed in the literature, and moved westward without much further mixing.

    Description: Experiments are described to define further the fatty acid requirements of rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri). In all cases, feeding semipurified diets containing no polyunsaturated fatty acids resulted in poor growth and feed conversion. Linolenic acid was superior to linoleic in stimulating growth and improving feed conversion. The requirement of linolenic acid (ω3 fatty acids) for rainbow trout is 1% of the diet or approximately 2.7% of the dietary calories. Essential fatty acid deficiency symptoms that were cured or prevented by linolenic acid included fin erosion, heart myopathy, and a shock syndrome. It is concluded that linolenic acid has an essential role in rainbow trout similar to that assigned to linoleic acid in man and higher animals.

    Description: In April 1990, 488 marine fish belonging to 30 species from central Phillipine waters were examined for flesh parasitic infections that may affect their consumability. One species of hemirhamphids and 3 species of belonids harboured plerocercoids of Otobothrium penetrans Linton, 1907 (Proceedings of the U.S. National Museum33, 85–126). This is the first record of this parasite from Pacific fish species. The highest intensity of infection found was 8 in Tylosurus crocodilus. Most of the larvae were located between the dorsal spines of the vertebral column, only 32% were found in the fillets. Based on the present material we give a description of the plerocercoid stage of the species using scanning electron microscopy of the armature and morphometrical measurements. Comparison to results from earlier findings of O. penetrons by Linton (1907; 1924, Proceedings of the U.S. National Museum64, 1–114) and to O. kurisi by Shields (1985, International Journal for Parasitology15: 635–643) lead to the conclusion that the latter species is a synonym for O. penetrans.

    Description: The growth of “Growing Sealife”™ plastic squid was tested against the principles of the von Bertalanffy growth theory. The von Bertalanffy growth curve fits the data well on visual inspection, although the Schnute curve actually provides a statistically superior fit. If the von Bertalanffy growth curve provides a reasonable fit to data, this is frequently interpreted as evidence for anabolic and catabolic changes. The results of this paper for plastic squid are intended to provide a warning that such an interpretation does not necessarily follow.

    Description: Work on the life histories of common antarctic benthic marine invertebrates over the past several decades demands a revision of several widely held paradigms. First, contrary to expectations derived from work on temperate species, there is little or no evidence for temperature adaptation with respect to reproduction (gametogenesis), devel? opment, and growth. It remains to be determined whether the slow rates of these processes reflect some inherent inability to adapt to low temperatures, or are a response to features of the antarctic marine environment not directly related to low temperature, such as low food resources. Secondly, contrary to the widely accepted opinion designated as "Thor- son's rule," pelagic development is common in many groups of shallow-water marine invertebrates. In fact in some groups, such as asteroids, pelagic development is as prevalent in McMurdo Sound, the southern-most open-water marine environment in the world, as in central California. In other taxonomic groups, especially gastropods, there does seem to be a genuine trend toward non-pelagic development from tropical to antarctic latitudes. Although this trend has been predicted by theoretical models, its underlying causes appear to be group specific rather than general. Thirdly, pelagic lecithotrophic development, often considered to be of negligible importance, occurs in many shallow-water antarctic marine macroinvertebrates. Pelagic lecithotrophy may be an adaptation to a combination of poor food conditions in antarctic waters most ofthe year and slow rates of development. Nevertheless, some of the most abundant and widespread antarctic marine invertebrates have pelagic planktotrophic larvae that take very long times to complete development to metamorphosis. These species are particularly prevalent in productive regions of shallow water (〈 30 m), which are frequently disturbed by anchor ice formation, and the production of numerous pelagic planktotrophic larvae may represent a strategy for colonization. Although planktotrophic larvae tend to be seasonal in occurrence, their production is not linked particularly closely to the mid-summer pulse of phytoplankton production. These larvae show no evidence of starvation, even during times when phytoplankton abundance is very low, and they may depend on unusual sources of food, such as bacteria. How they escape the selective conditions that apparently led to a predominance of non-feeding modes of development in antarctic marine invertebrates remains as a major challenge for antarctic marine biology.

    Description: Nine large box cores collected in the western Greenland-Iceland-Norwegian (GIN) Sea were analyzed for calcium carbonate content and coarse fraction components. Stratigraphic control is based on oxygen isotope records performed on four of the cores. All cores were correlated using oxygen and carbon isotope data, fluctuations in calcium carbonate content, coarse terrigenous particle content and volcanic ash beds. Glacial and interglacial cycles are documented by a number of terrigenous particle events and differentiated calcium carbonate production which can be correlated to major paleoceanographic and paleoclimatic shifts. In the older core sections, extensive deposition of ice-rafted detritus (IRD) persisted until about oxygen isotope stage 9 and document a relatively stable environment in this area, strongly influenced by cold surface water masses. The following interval was characterized by variations in the general surface water circulation pattern, although high amounts of IRD are still present in Iceland Sea sediments. Pronounced shifts in terrigenous input and pelagic carbonate records were identified close to the oxygen isotope stage Full-size image (〈1 K) and Full-size image (〈1 K) boundaries, indicating massive melting of icebergs in the western GIN Sea. These enormous inputs of debris were followed by an increase in calcium carbonate production caused by maximum intrusion of warm Atlantic surface waters. Relatively high calcium carbonate contents also show that only little dilution by fine-grained material and a minimum of ice melting occurred during these warm phases. During oxygen isotope stage 5, conditions were more uniform indicating a less pronounced westward penetration of Atlantic waters as compared to the Holocene. The last glacial (stages 4-2) is characterized by the occurrence of “Heinrich”-like events, although high IRD contents were present throughout this interval. A distinct contrast between the northernmost cores and the cores in the south is indicative of a rather strong westward penetration of Atlantic water in the north and of an area dominated by cold water east of the Kolbeinsey Ridge during the Holocene. However, conditions west of Jan Mayen seem to have remained constantly dominated by cold surface waters throughout the whole time investigated.

    Description: Sixteen samples (588 individuals) of the Argentine shortfin squid Illex argentinus were collected by commercial vessels from Falkland and surrounding waters (42°06–51°17S) between February and May 1990 and subjected to starch gel electrophoresis. Levels of electrophoretically detectable generic variability and the extent of population differentiation were determined from allele frequencies at 25 enzyme-coding loci. Low levels of genetic variability were detected, with the overall proportion of polymorphic loci, P = 0.28, mean heterozygosities per locus, H1 = 0.011, and the average effective number of alleles, Nc = 1.23. Marked population differentiation was indicated by significant differences in allele frequency among samples, and unbalanced genotypic distributions with heterozygote deficits at most loci. Nei's mean genetic distances (D) and identities (I) ranged from 0.000 to 0.130 and 1.000 to 0.878, respectively, underlining the marked genetic divergence detected. Some evidence of microgeographic differentiation (between replicates within sites) was observed. Individuals collected from northerly limits of the sampled area (42: 06 S, 58:09 W) were most genetically distinct (I = 0.878−0.904), suggesting the existence of a hitherto unrecognised subspecies or species of Illex. Emphasis is placed on the need to delimit putative stock boundaries, and develop appropriate population models to ensure conservation of genetic resources.

    Description: The biology of exploited cephalopod stocks is reviewed. Individual growth rates are high, slowing drastically or becoming erratic at sexual maturity. Growth estimates depend on aquarium studies and population modal analysis. In some cases, ring markings in the statolith appear to be age-related, but at present there is no generally applicable method of age determination. Sexes are separate and fertilization is normally by direct mating. Rapid maturation is followed by a single spawning season and, with few exceptions, an early death. Methods for estimation of fecundity are poorly developed. Annual recruitment to the population is essential and depends critically on each year's breeding success and the survival of eggs and hatchlings. Many cephalopod species have a planktonic stage of variable duration but no specialized larval stages. Cephalopods are carnivorous animals with very high gross growth efficiency. They are also consumed in large quantities by higher trophic levels leading to suggestions that cephalopods are potentially capable of supporting significantly increased levels of exploitation.     Description: Data gathered by recent “Islas Orcadas” cruises reveal the seafloor spreading pattern for a region south of the Agulhas/Falkland fracture zone system. The presence of a magnetic anomaly bight about the Agulhas Plateau indicates that the Agulhas Plateau may have developed at the site of a tectonic plate triple junction during the Late Cretaceous. A westward jump in the seafloor spreading center during the Late Maestrichtian (anomaly 34−31) reduced the offset across the Falkland/Agulhas fracture zone system and resulted in the formation of two conjugate aseismic ridges here described as the Meteor and Islas Orcadas Rises. The magnetic lineation pattern in the Agulhas Basin suggests that a tectonic plate (Malvinas Plate) existed during Campanian to Maestrichtian times. Relative rates of motion are calculated for Antarctica, South America, and Africa for the Late Cretaceous.

    Description: Volcanic ash layers, which represent the products of volcanic activity within the ocean basins, are common in sedimentary cores taken near Cobb Seamount and on the actively spreading Gorda and Juan de Fuca Ridges. Petrographic and chemical analyses of the glass shards from these deposits have revealed that they are unaltered and are as chemically representative of local volcanic events as are the glassy margins of fresh pillow basalts recovered from the same areas. The presence of unhydrated glass shards in samples as old as 3.8 my is in direct conflict with published hydration rates of both terrestrial and submarine volcanic glasses. A study of a sequence of ash layers from Cobb Seamount, which spans in time much of the Seamount's history, indicates that the volcanic products from Cobb Seamount have had alkaline affinities and that its eruptions have been becoming progressively enriched in Al2O3. Recent experimental petrological evidence and the data on the chemical compositions of Cobb Seamount and the adjacent Juan de Fuca Ridge magmas are in agreement with the hypothesis that magmas are being generated at progressively greater depths beneath Cobb Seamount as it migrates away from the Juan de Fuca Ridge.

There is a centrosymmetric striated repeat of 22 nm in the system which is based upon dark and light bands of unequal width. The banding is orientated perpendicular to the direction of the major molecular axis of the chitin fibres. The chitin molecules are laid down in sheets with a mutual, though irregular, twist to produce a laminated ‘plywood’ material.

    Description: A deep Seismic reflection profile collected by DEKORP and BELCORP in the western Rhenish Massif was supplemented by wide-angle measurements. Signals from a vibrator source were successfully recorded to a distance of 60 km. A passive recording array was operated that recorded all shots along the profile. The wide-angle and near-vertical data were used to construct a velocity model for the profile. Most of the wide-angle reflections coincide with strong near-vertical reflections or bands of high reflectivity. The North Variscan Deformation Front, seen as a prominent shallow reflection on many profiles in this region, separates an upper crust with rather nigh velocities from a layer with lower velocities underneath. At a depth of 20–22 km a thin (2–3 km thick) layer of high velocities is found. The Moho is not reflective either in the near-vertical or in the wide-angle data, suggesting the presence of a thick crust-mantle transition zone.

    Description: This chapter discusses the carbon turnover, calcification, and growth in coral reefs. Carbon turnover within a total reef community is a function of two distinct, biochemically interacting cycles. The first is the metabolic cycle consisting of the photosynthetic fixation of CO2 and the release of CO2 by respiration and decomposition processes. Superimposed on this are the direct incorporation of organic compounds (dissolved or particulate; living or non-living) originating outside the reef systems (in the adjacent ocean waters), and the loss of organic compounds from the reef system into the out-flowing water. The second is the inorganic carbonate cycle involving the biological and non-biological precipitation and dissolution of carbonates. Superimposed on this is the loss of particulate carbonates in suspension in the out-flowing water. The main chemical component of a coral-reef system is calcium carbonate, which occurs either as high-Mg calcite, aragonite, or low-Mg calcite. The mean calcification values in various environments at One Tree Reef are presented in the chapter. These data may be converted to an implied vertical growth rate potential assuming that accrual is dominantly aragonite (density = 2.89 g cm–3) and that there is 50% porosity after normal compaction.

    Description: The inner Scotian Shelf off the Eastern Shore of Nova Scotia forms an irregular surface that extends some 25–30 km seaward of the present coastline to water depths of about 100 m where it drops off into Emerald Basin. The distribution of Late Quaternary deposits is highly variable both along and across the shelf. These sediments preserve a record of Late Wisconsinan glaciation, ice recession, and late- and post-glacial changes of relative sea level. Glaciomarine deposits occur in a valley complex extending seaward from Halifax Harbour. East of Halifax, we observe a three-part zonation across the inner shelf. The innermost zone extends to water depths of about 50 m. It is characterized by acoustic basement (Meguma Group metasediments), either outcropping or overlain by acoustically unstratified deposits, interpreted as glacial diamict, and by a unit interpreted as stratified outwash. These units are overlain by stratified valleyfill deposits representing Holocene lacustrine and estuarine facies, which have been sampled in a number of cores. Much of the inner shelf is covered by a thin veneer of sand and gravel, generally less than 1 m thick. Further seaward, the sea floor is an erosional unconformity that truncates acoustic units interpreted as glacial diamict and stratified drift. The stratified estuarine deposits found in the inner zone appear to be absent here, but thin patches of transgressive lag deposits occur throughout the area. The outer part of the inner shelf is dominated by outcrop of acoustic basement, with very limited surficial sediment cover. This zone of rugged outcrop occupies half or more of the inner shelf width over much of the study area. The extensive outcrop is attributed to a combination of glacial and/or glaciofluvial erosion, limited recessional deposition, and reworking of any remaining sediment cover by energetic long-period surface gravity waves under lower postglacial sea levels. Seaward of the outcrop zone, there is a transitional area between the inner shelf and Emerald Basin. This zone is characterized by high relief, with exposures of acoustic basement rising up to 60 m above intervening depressions. The depressions are partially filled by stratified glaciomarine and marine deposits up to 55 m thick. Lateral transitions between stratified and unstratified facies along a morainal ridge in northern Emerald Basin suggest the presence of a partially grounded floating ice margin in this area. Late-glacial relative sea level changes remain poorly defined. Several lines of evidence suggest high relative sea level early in the process of glacial recession from the inner shelf, followed by a rapid drop resulting from glacio-isostatic rebound. Samples of estuarine and salt-marsh deposits collected in cores from the inner part of the inner shelf provide evidence of Holocene marine transgression from below −40 m at 11,000 years BP, continuing to the present.

    Description: Horizontal distribution of myctophid fishes were studied from two transects in the Arabian Sea in 1987. Species numbers exhibited a south-north decline in diversity, with only half of the fish taxa occupying the northeastern region. Diaphus arabicus was the dominant species both in the south and north. All recorded myctophid fish species migrate in a diel pattern, residing during daytime at depths of extremely low oxygen levels (〈0.1 ml O2 1−1) and foraging in the oxygen-rich surface layer at night. Feeding patterns were determined for the six most abundant myctophid species. All species appeared to be opportunistic predators that prey on a comparatively narrow food spectrum consisting principally of small to medium sized copepods. Numerically, non-calanoid copepods (with Oncaea conifera and O. venusta dominating) made up to 70% of the diet of D. arabicus and Bolinichthys longipes. Of the 26 calanoid copepod species identified from the six myctophid taxa, the genera Euchaeta, Pleuromamma and Candacia generally dominated in the stomachs, with P. indica constituting between 21 and 95% (by numbers) of the calanoid copepod prey.

    Description: Particulate fluxes of aluminium, cadmium, cobalt, copper, iron, manganese, nickel, phosphorus, lead, vanadium and zinc in the northeast subtropical Atlantic Ocean have been determined from sediment trap samples collected between 1 December 1986 and 30 April 1987 at 1020 and 4120 m below the ocean surface. The fluxes of most elements (except Cd and P) show small variations between the different layers, and are closely associated with the vertical transport of aluminium. Elemental composition and flux rates suggest that aerosol loadings from northeast trade winds are the major contributor of these elements to depositing material. Extremely low fluxes of copper, lead and zinc also indicate that anthropogenic perturbations are of insignificant importance in this region.

    Description: Within the framework of the JGOFS Pilot Study in 1989 mesozooplankton (0.2–20 mm) was sampled by means of a Hydro-Bios multinet in five depth strata (0–25, 25–50, 50–100, 100–200, 200–500 m) during four Lagrangian drift experiments of 8–14 days' duration at 18, 33, 46 and 58°N, to follow the seasonal progress of the phytoplankton spring bloom development in the northeast Atlantic. Mesozooplankton standing stock, measured as dry weight and ash-free dry weight, increased by a factor of about 6 from 18 to 58°N. Day/night differences amounted to 10–20% of the average and were—with one exception at 18°N—not statistically significant. Using the data on weight-specific respiration rates measured by colleagues on the same cruise, the ingestion rates and potential community grazing of mesozooplankton on phytoplankton within the upper 100 m of the water column were calculated. During all four drift experiments, quasi-steady-state conditions were observed in phyto- and zooplankton standing stock, primary production and daily sedimentation at 100 m depth. The maximum potential grazing rate by mesozooplankton accounted for about half of the daily primary production. Since sedimentation of fresh phytoplankton was negligible, it is concluded that the grazing pressure exercised by mesozooplankton together with micro- and nanozooplankton was responsible for keeping the phytoplankton standing stock at a more or less constant level during the investigated spring bloom in the four areas. Particle flux was thus dominated by zooplankton faecal material.

    Description: The productivity regime and size structure of phytoplankton are described for three different epipelagic systems in the Arabian Sea during the inter-monsoon period in spring 1987: (1) the coast of Oman; (2) the central Arabian Sea; and (3) the shelf off Pakistan. These results are related to the functioning of the specific ecosystem. Off the coast of Oman, the transition from a surface maximum of autotrophic biomass and production to a more oligotrophic system, with a chlorophyll subsurface maximum, was observed. Concomitantly, the size spectrum changed towards a higher significance of picoplankton. In the central Arabian Sea, a typical oligotrophic system with a pronounced subsurface maximum of autotrophic biomass and primary production was encountered. Here, the epipelagic system could be divided into two distinct sub-systems: the surface layer “regenerated” production, the predominance of picophytoplankton and minor losses due to sedimentation, thus a “closed” system; and the subsurface maximum layer at the nutricline characterized by higher sedimentation losses and more diatoms. Both sub-systems showed about the same productivity, the turnover in the surface layer having been much greater than in the subsurface maximum. The system on the shelf off Pakistan is seen as a decay stage of the open ocean system when water from offshore is transported onto the shelf during the onset of monsoon winds.

    Description: Helium (RA = 3.0 to 5.6) and carbon (δ13C from −7.2 to −3.4‰) isotopic compositions, and relative CO2, CH4, N2, He and Ar contents of CO2-rich gases from Lakes Nyos and Monoun, Cameroon; Laacher See, Germany; Dieng Volcanic Plateau, Indonesia, and a well at Mt. Gambier, Australia, point to a common, essentially magmatic origin. Absorption of the original magmatic gases into deeply circulating groundwater and equilibration of the resulting solutions with crustal rock at temperatures of about 300°C fix CO2 and CH4 contents. On further rise, the solutions start to boil separating gas-rich vapors which, on encountering an impermeable barrier, may accumulate to form gas pockets with steadily increasing pressures. In the case of sufficiently high gas contents, the pressures may exceed lithostatic pressures leading to a blow-out or a “pneumatic” eruption (Dieng). Otherwise, gas may accumulate to form a stable pocket (Mt. Gambier). Minor leakage from such pockets may lead to surface discharges of CO2-rich gases as at Laacher See, re-absorption into shallow groundwater to the formation of the low-salinity, CO2-charged waters encountered at Lakes Nyos and Monoun. The occurrence of these high-CO2, low-temperature systems is likely to be favored in tectonically active regions, allowing deep, possibly mantle gases to rise, but with sufficiently low regional heat flows to prevent the establishment of large-scale geothermal activity.

    Description: Nine semipurified diets containing protein/energy ratios that ranged from 73 to 162 mg protein/kilocalorie were fed to young rainbow trout for 18 weeks. A casein-gelatin (70–30) mixture and herring oil were each fed at three levels in a factorial type of experiment. Each of the casein-gelatin levels (36, 44 and 53%) was fed at each of the fat levels (8, 16 and 24%). Cornstarch was added at the expense of the casein-gelatin mix to adjust dietary protein levels. Caloric intake regulated feed consumption; and except for diets low in both fat and protein, no significant differences in weight gains were noted, although feed and energy conversions were markedly influenced. Higher protein/calorie ratios were positively correlated with liver size, level of liver sugars, percentage body fat, percentage body protein, and negatively correlated with percentage liver lipids, size of gastrointestinal tract and gain/gram ingested protein. These correlations were observed for similar protein/calorie ratios regardless of the dietary levels of protein and lipid.

    Description: The levels of four trace metals (Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn) in the whole soft body and in different organs of the ocean quahog Arctica islandica were evaluated from four stations in Kiel Bay, Western Baltic. The relationships between the contents and concentrations of these metals and body size (weight and length) were also investigated. Double logarithmic plots of metal contents and concentrations against dry body weight and shell length, respectively, show straight-line relationships. The results indicate that smaller individuals have higher concentrations of Cu and Zn, two essential metals, while larger individuals have higher concentrations of Cd and Pb, two non-essential metals. The calculated regression slopes of metal content against dry-body weight revealed that Cd and Cu appear to be affected by maturation since two different slopes are observed for both metals before and after maturation. This was not obvious for Pb and Zn. Pooled slopes of metal content against dry-body weight for all animal sizes indicated that Cu and Zn have a one common slope of (0.82) and Cd and Pb another common one of (1.51). Plots of metal concentrations against shell length indicated also that Cu and Zn have one common slope of (−0.54) and Cd and Pb another one of (1.56). Moreover, it was possible to calculate one final slope of (1.53) for Cd and Pb from both content/weight and concentration/length plots. This indicates that A. islandica may have one metabolic strategy for the essential metals and another for the non-essential metals.

The results show several input and output pathways of the anterior and posterior chromatophore and lateral basal lobes. These connections allow coordination and modification of the chromatophore motor program throughout the motor pathway. Unlike other cephalopod species, there seems to be no direct input from the optic lobes to the lateral basal lobes inL. brevis. This species displays only a few simple patterns; therefore the underlying neural pathways for chromatophore control may be different from those of other cephalopods with more extensive patterning repertoires.

    Description: Coccolith and dinoflagellate cyst assemblages have been investigated in five sediment cores from the Norwegian Sea and Fram Strait. Both fossil groups are characterized by similar patterns of composition. The assemblages contain high proportions of single species. The coccolith flora is of low diversity and consists almost entirely of Coccolithus pelagicus and Emiliania huxleyi. The dinoflagellate cysts are generally dominated by Operculodinium centrocarpum and Nematosphaeropsis labyrinthus. Other species, especially Bitectatodinium tepikiense, Peridinium faeroense and Impagidinium pallidum, sometimes contribute considerably to the assemblages. Based on the abundance of the assemblages and the ratio change between the dominating species it has been possible to establish three intervals of distinct major changes in surface water mass conditions. Sparse occurrences of coccoliths and dinoflagellate cysts have been observed before 10,000 yrs. B.P., indicating harsh environmental conditions with a distinct influence of meltwater and temporarily very slight inflow of Atlantic water. The modern surface-water circulation pattern was reinitiated during Termination IB. The assemblages suggest slightly cooler and probably less saline surface water conditions than are present today until 7500 yrs B.P. Solar insolation may have caused a first temperature peak which is responsible for the early Holocene productivity maximum. A considerable change in the composition of dinocyst and coccolith assemblages occurs corresponding approximately to the onset of the Holocene climatic optimum. This change was most probably linked to an almost synchronous reorganization of the hydrographic properties in the entire North Atlantic realm after the ice sheets had vanished. Since 6000 yrs B.P. the Norwegian Current with its modern oceanographic and ecological properties has been fully established.

    Description: A simple method of providing a regular supply of live food for the experimental culture of paralarval cephalopods is described. The primary food source utilized was hatched zoeae of large laboratory populations of the hermit crab, Pagurus prideaux. Zoeal size, swimming behaviour, and distribution in the water column make these zoeae a suitable live prey for rearing early post-hatching planktonic stages of cephalopods and probably other marine zooplanktivores. Ovigerous P. prideaux females were collected from the sea throughout the year at depths between 10 and 90 m in the NW Mediterranean and maintained at densities of up to 500 specimens · m−2. One month after spawning in aquaria, 38% of the females of P. prideaux started to incubate a second clutch of eggs. Other decapod crustacean species, such as Liocarcinus depurator and Dardanus arrosor, were maintained to use their zoeae as a food source for cephalopod paralarvae. P. prideaux zoeae were used as the sole or main food resource for rearing Loligo vulgaris and Octopus vulgaris, during the first 2 months of life. First feeding and initial growth in L. vulgaris and O. vulgaris paralarvae can be successfully stimulated using decapod zoeae with a total length equivalent to 50–100% of the cephalopod's mantle length.

    Description: In February 1988, 60 near surface samples were taken on a track between 2°W in the English Channel, the Pentland Firth and the inner German Bight. Determinations were made on filtered and unfiltered samples. Concentrations of dissolved metals in the North Sea normalized to a salinity of 34.5 were Al 31, Cd 0.13, Co 0.13, Cu 3.4, Mn 6.2 and Ni 3.9 nM. In July 1984 the equivalent concentrations were Al 11, Cd 0.15, Co 0.15, Cu 4.3, Mn 12 and Ni 3.6 nM. Distinct regional differences were detectable which can be related to the origin of the water, differing river inputs, and solution-solid phase exchange reactions. The degree of the influence of exchange reactions was investigated through the concept of Kd, the distribution coefficient. A Kd of 105 ml g−1 for Al is consistent with other observations and explains the relatively high concentrations of dissolved Al detected in the English Channel on this cruise. The data suggest a higher Kd for Mn approaching 106 ml g−1. The high Mn Kd coupled to higher suspended sediment loads in winter may be sufficient to explain the lower concentration of dissolved Mn in winter. Comparison of concentrations across the shelf break suggests that for all the metals studied, the European Shelf is a source of dissolved metals to the deep sea. Calculations based on the limited available data indicate that this export is of similar magnitude to the fresh water input of dissolved metals.

    Description: An overview is given of the multinational investigations carried out at 47°N 20°W for the period 24 April–31 May, with the main emphasis on the succession of plankton communities and the flux of organic carbon through various plankton components. The depth of the upper mixed layer decreased rapidly after 25 April, triggering the start of the spring bloom that developed within a 2-week period. Chlorophyll a stocks integrated to 80 m water depth reached peak concentrations during the first 10 days in May. The observed decline was partly due to the seasonal development, but also may have been influenced by changes in water masses associated with a cyclonic eddy. Primary production ranged from 50 to 150 mmol C m−2 day−1 with highest values in the first half of May. After the first bloom phase, dominated by diatoms, nanophytoplankton gained more importance as primary producers when silicate was depleted. Stocks of bacteria, microzooplankton and mesozooplankton increased in the second half of May. Bacterial production averaged 30% of primary production and probably metabolized a large amount of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) per day, but due to uncertain carbon conversion efficiencies total bacterial carbon consumption is difficult to estimate. Largely daily changes in the DOC standing stock could not be reconciled with the measured primmary production and are probably an expression of spatial rather than temporal variations. Microzooplankton was found to consume around 64% of primary production in the second half of May. Grazing estimates for mesozooplankton varied but seem to be small (〈5% of primary production) for most of the investigation period. The small mesozooplankton size classes (〈1 mm) dominated biomass and grazing. Vertical particulate organnic carbon (POC) flux measured by sediment traps in 150 m depth was around 9.8 mmol C m−2 day−1 representing approximately 11% of primary production. The spring bloom pulse of particle flux reached the deep ocean and benthos 4–6 weeks after the surface water peak.

    Description: Altimetric data from Geosat and some critical hydrographic measurements were used to estimate in real time the mesoscale physical oceanographic environment surrounding the Joint Global Ocean Flux Study (JGOFS) 1989 North Atlantic Bloom Experiment. Three cyclonic eddies, including an exceptionally large one, evolved and interacted over the 10 weeks of observations. Subsequent analysis of all available hydrographic data confirmed the real time estimates and provided further quantitative information concerning the mesoscale and submesoscale structure of the upper ocean. Remotely sensed indicators of near-surface chlorophyll content reveal significant biological variability on these wavelengths. The altimetric and hydrographic data have been assimilated into a dynamical model to produce optimal estimates of physical fields of interest as they evolve in time for use in physical and biological process studies

    Description: As long as salinity in the Baltic Sea was high (as it was between 1948 and 1982) the depth range between 70 and 100 m suffered frequent anoxia. However, when salinity was low and when the position of the halocline was deep (as it was in the first half of the century) oxygen conditions were good and long-lived macrofauna occurred. Should the present trend to lower salinities continue (building bridges across the Belt Sea and reducing salt water inflow would be helpful) one can foresee a recolonization by macrofauna in the depth range 70–100 m.

    Description: The influence of increasing amounts of surfactants on the toxicity of hydrocarbons was determined using the bioluminescence inhibition test (Microtox test). Three biogenic and three synthetic surfactants were tested against the water-soluble fractions (WSF) of crude and weathered Ekofisk oil, phenol, and naphthalene. Surfactant concentrations below 100 mg litre−1 lowered the toxicity of the WSF, indicating an antagonistic interaction reducing the toxicities of surfactants and hydrocarbons. At concentrations greater than 100 mg litre−1 the toxicity rose again and was higher than the untreated WSF. The point of reversal seemed to be the critical micelle concentration, at which the formation of oil/water emulsions is possible.

    Description: The reproductive cycle of the sponge Halichondria panicea was investigated at Boknis Eck in the Western Kiel Bight over 2 yr, and over 1 yr on the island Helgoland in the North Sea and was compared with material collected earlier at Tjärnö at the Swedish west coast. Temperature and salinity were monitored at the different stations in order to determine whether different hydrographic conditions could be linked to differences in seasonal patterns of the reproductive cycle. The results showed H. panicea to be gonochoristic at all stations. The ratio of males to females varied between populations and years, but females predominated consistently. Comparison of the reproductive cycle in the years 1987 and 1989 at the brackish-water station Boknis Eck shows that high ambient winter and spring temperatures in 1989 resulted in a shorter period of oogenesis and earlier larval release, as compared to the year 1987. The reproductive cycle of the sponges at the fully marine station at Helgoland in 1989 and the brackish-water station at Tjärnö in 1978 under temperature and salinity conditions similar to those at Boknis Eck in 1989 showed the same seasonal pattern. We conclude that the lower salinities found at both Boknis Eck and Tjärnö do not cause a delay or slow-down of reproduction at these stations as compared to Helgoland. Under favourable temperature conditions, oogenesis was highly synchronous within the different populations, while it was more spread over time under the low ambient water temperatures at Boknis Eck in 1987.

    Description: A theoretical basis is suggested for examining habitat limitations of artificial surfaces for population enhancement of crevice-dwelling, or territorial organisms such as reef fish or lobsters, that takes into account known growth and mortality rates. This approach is compared with the crevice frequency at size in a ‘natural’ substrate, which, it is assumed, corresponds to fractal expectation. With naturally dissected surfaces, fractal expectation predicts that crevice availability declines with size, so that a ‘bottleneck’, limits the population of larger-sized individuals, but that natural mortality, or rate of loss of individuals displaced from crevices, will also decline with age. The paper considers a surface perforated with circular niches of a limited number of discrete radii, distributed at random over a surface, without overlap, and considers what is the size frequency of hole radii needed to complete the life history of an infaunal organism with a given mortality and growth schedule, and a constant occupancy rate. Determining a priori crevice frequency at size before constructing an artificial surface, and for a given packing density, distributing the crevices over it in two dimensions, is referred to as ‘mapping’ the growth and mortality rates onto the surface. Sample calculations are described either for continuous recruitment or where recruitment occurs as a ‘pulse’ during a specific season, and subsequent cohort growth obeys a common scheduling. It is shown that fractal surfaces limit the production of larger individuals unless migration intervenes, but are more suitable for recruitment enhancement. Using units with a limited size range of perforations is biologically inefficient, and depends on natural recruitment elsewhere for stock replenishment by migration. These calculations are relevant to the design of artificial surfaces, throw light on mechanisms limiting productivity of dissected surfaces, and point to effects of individual niche size on abundance at size of niche-limited organisms. The existence of nursery areas which can support large numbers of small individuals but few adults, and migratory stages in the life history of crevice-dwelling organisms, could be functions of the fractal nature of natural surfaces. An experimental field approach (a ‘niche sampler’) measuring occupancy at size of existing habitats is proposed that could be used prior to designing and installing artificial reefs in a given area to determine the optimal hole frequency at size.

    Description: Regional terrane analysis has been combined with a global evaluation of plate kinematics to produce a new tectonic model for the Mesozoic evolution of western North America and its associated marginal seas. The model employs a two-tiered data reliability ranking system to resolve conflicts within data sets. The lower tier of the ranking system involves the assignment of a numerical rank to paleomagnetic and/or paleobiogeographic data based on each data set's reliability. The upper tier of the ranking system places the paleomagnetic and paleobiogeographic data in perspective by assigning a relative order of importance to different types of data. The most reliable data are considered to be “departure” (rift) and “arrival” (collision) times that are tightly constrained by independent data sets. Evidence of subduction and/or strike-slip motion also ranks high in the master ranking system. Paleomagnetic and vertebrate paleobiogeographic data come next in the hierarchy, followed by invertebrate and floral paleobiogeographic data. Application of this approach to a case study, the “Baja British Columbia” controversy, has resulted in a coherent model for the entire region.

    Description: The alimentary tracts of 12 species of Antarctic squid were examined visually and serologically for the presence of Euphausia superba. Only four species, Alluroteuthis antarcticus, Galiteuthis glacialis, Martialia hyadesi and Psychroteuthis glacialis, contained material which was identifiable to species visually. Myctophid fish and euphausiids were the most common prey item. Serology showed that specimens of six species had eaten euphausiids. Where antisera showed cross-reactions with other potential prey species, biogeographical and haul data was used to determine the species of Euphausia consumed. P. glacialis (n=19) had consumed E. superba. Mastigoteuthis psychrophila (n=10) had eaten E. superba and/or E. triacantha. Brachioteuthis picta (n=6), M. hyadesi (n=27), and two Moroteuthis spp. (n=2) had consumed unidentified euphausiids. Bathyteuthis abyssicola (n=13) and Histioteuthis eltaninae (n=13) had not preyed on euphausiids. B. picta appeared to have fed in the net.

    Description: Feeding trials in which salmon was fed to captive seals are described and sources of evidence for the presence of salmon in the diet of seals are evaluated. In faecal samples, the recovery rate of salmon otoliths is too low and bony remains are too fragmented to be useful. Protein extracts from the faeces of salmon-fed captive seals will react with anti-salmon antisera, but the reaction is not strong enough for the methods to be presently applied to field samples. In the digestive tract samples from seals, the use of bony remains for the identification of salmon significantly increases the probability of recognising this species. Protein extracts from digestive tract contents will react positively with anti-salmon antisera and this shows that serological methods can provide evidence for the presence of Salmonidae in the diet of seals, in the absence of solid remains.

    Description: Analysis of growth by year of hatching was estimated from the statolith growth increments of the oceanic squid Todarodes angolensis in three consecutive years. Samples were taken between November 1987 and February 1990 in the northern Benguela upwelling system. Growth increments suggested that hatching took place throughout the year and that the life cycle was ≈ 1 yr. From the onset of sexual maturity in the final third of the life cycle, growth rates were subject to considerable individual variation. Growth rate was significant highest in the 1987 year class, presumably because of exceptionally cool environmental conditions in the Benguela region. The response of T. angolensis to interannual environmental variability in the northern Benguela system is discussed. The results from this study suggest that it will be important to consider variability in growth rate in relation to environmental conditions, in future studies of squid age and growth.

    Description: Biological and fishery features of the waves of abundance of Illex argentinus in three fishery regions −52°S (shelf with 180–230 m depths in exclusive economic zone of Argentina—EEZA), 46° and 42°S (continental slope with 600–800 m depths off the EEZA) in April–June 1990 were studied. According to age analysis of 629 statoliths made aboard, age-length structure of each wave of abundance were determined. In April–June active spawning migrations of I. argentinus were observed from feeding grounds located in limits 50–52°S along the continental slope northwards through 46° and 42° fishery regions. Only winter-hatched squids (hatched from June to September of the previous year) took part in migrations which were observed as waves of abundance in all three regions. Each migratory wave of abundance consisted of 2–4 successive monthly generations. The start of spawning movement was corresponded with the age and maturity state of the squid. Squid of all monthly generations began migrating from the 52°S region at a mean age of approximately 250 days, passed through 46°S at mean age 280 days and through 42°S at mean age 295 days. Males migrated 2–3 weeks earlier than females of the same generation. Rates of somatic growth were very low during migrations from 52° to 46°S (RDGR - 0.13% mantle length (ML) in mature males and 0.2% ML in maturing females). During movement from 46° to 42°S and, obviously further, mature squids practically ceased somatic growth. Estimated rate of migrations was 23.2–28.9 km day−1 (including current velocity), or 26–30 cm s−1 (0.47 body length s−1). Spawning was considered to occur on the continental slope of Uruguay and Brazil north of 35°S in July–August. Methodical approaches of efficient determination of squid age, growth and stock structure by means of investigation of squid biological features and statolith microstructure in each distinguished wave of abundance were elaborated.

    Description: The effects of feeding a prepared surimi diet (fish-based) and a prepared pelleted diet (shrimpbased) on the survival, growth and feeding rate of the cuttlefish Sepia officinalis L. were evaluated during a 45-day experiment. One hundred and twenty juveniles of laboratory cultured cuttlefish (74.5 ± 12.36 g) were divided into three treatments and were fed thawed shrimp (control), pellets or surimi. Survival rates on these diets were 95.0%, 67.5% and 22.5%, respectively. Preliminary data indicated that the low survival of cuttlefish fed surimi may have been caused by low levels of copper in their blood (131 vs 244 μg/ml) since copper is required for their respiratory blood pigment, hemocyanin. Instantaneous growth rates were 2.71 % body weight BW/day for cuttlefish fed raw shrimp, 0.33% BW/day for cuttlefish fed pellets, and 0.54% BW/day for cuttlefish fed surimi. The feeding rate of cuttlefish fed shrimp was high (6–8% BW/day). The feeding rate on pellets increased with time (from 〈 1 to 3% BW/day) but never reached the level for raw shrimp. The feeding rate on surimi increased to equal the rate for raw shrimp during days 1–30 (8 to 9% BW/day) and thereafter decreased (〈4% BW/day). In conclusion, there was a major distinction between the palatability of a prepared diet and the ability of that diet to support growth. Surimi was highly palatable but resulted in poor survival, suggesting low nutritional quality. In contrast, pellets were less palatable but produced maintenance growth. Development of practical surimi diets will require supplementation of the surimi with soluble micro- and macronutrients.

    Description: Changes in marine ecosystems can be manifested in many different ways, on different temporal and spatial scales. Seabirds are top consumers in marine foodwebs and offer opportunities to detect and assess the biological effects of changes in physical parameters (sea-surface temperature [SST], salinity, depth of thermocline etc.) of the marine ecosystem. We compare six-eight years' of data on the biology (diet, and breeding success) of four species of seabird (arctic tern Sterna paradisaea and common tern S. hirundo, which feed at the sea surface; and Atlantic puffin Fratercula antica and razorbill Alca torda, which dive 30-60 m for their prey) breeding on Machias Seal Island (MSI) in the Bay of Fundy with both our own meteorological and oceanographic measurements, and with standard measurements from conventional sources. These are compared with fisheries data on changes in the main prey of all the seabirds concerned (juvenile or '0-group' herring Clupea harengus) which are the most direct link between the seabirds and the physical properties of the marine system. We explore relationships between seabird productivity and diet, and other aspects of both herring biology (larval surveys, and fat content) and oceanography (SST data from the island, and remotely sensed data from the entrance to the Bay of Fundy). Timing of laying by puffins followed SST variation at neither the local (MSI) nor regional scales, but at the scale of the North Atlantic, following the trend of populations breeding off northern Norway. The proportion of herring in the diet of terns over 6 years varied inversely with herring larval abundance the previous fall; this relationship was not statistically significant in the puffin and razorbill. A major new finding is the considerable (approximately 50%) inter-annual variation in the energy density (fat content) of juvenile herring that are the main seabird prey; breeding success of both species of tern varied in parallel with the energy density of juvenile herring in the diet until the last two years of the study, when sandlance (Ammodytes sp.) and euphausid shrimp predominated in the diet. Our long-term research approach combines traditional population monitoring (of numbers of breeding birds) with demographic, behavioural and environmental monitoring, to provide new understanding of the marine ecosystem as well as of seabirds.

    Description: A central tenet of Antarctic ecology suggests that increases in Chinstrap Penguin (Pygoscelis antarctica) populations during the last four decades resulted from an increase in prey availability brought on by the decrease in baleen whale stocks. We question this tenet and present evidence to support the hypothesis that these increases are due to a gradual decrease in the frequency of cold years with extensive winter sea ice cover resulting from environmental warming. Supporting data were derived from one of the first, major multidisciplinary winter expedition to the Scotia and Weddell seas; recent satellite images of ocean ice cover; and the analysis of long-term surface temperature records and penguin demography. Our observations indicate there is a need to pay close attention to environmental data in the management of Southern Ocean resources given the complexity of relating biological changes to ecological perturbations.

    Description: The seabird and seal community at Heard Island and the McDonald Islands comprised an estimated total biomass of 27893 tonnes of which the 15 breeding species of seabirds made up 70%. The total annual consumption of marine resources was estimated to be approximately 521 000 t, of which 81% was consumed by seabirds Approximately 165 000 t of fish, 41 600 t of squid and 312 000 t of crustaceans are consumed annually by this seabird and seal community. The annual energy flux to this community was estimated to be 2.17·1012 kJ and approximately 56 000 t of carbon are consumed annually. Breeding populations of King Penguins and Antarctic Fur Seals are increasing, that of the Southern Elephant Seal is decreasing; there are no data on the population trend for Macaroni Penguins, the predominant consumer species. Commercial fisheries are presently operating at the nearby Iles Kerguelen, and similar activities may prove to be commercially viable at Heard Island. The fishery is for Champsocephalus gunnari, a major prey species of penguins and Antarctic Fur Seals at Heard Island during the summer breeding season.

    Description: A seismic refraction profile across Langeland (Denmark) obtained from land stations recording airgun shots allowed to resolve upper crustal velocities to a depth of 8 km. The profile traverses the proposed Caledonian Deformation Front and the Ringkoebing-Fyn High. The Ringkoebing-Fyn High is about 10 km wide and the top basement lies less than 2 km below the surface. Basement velocities as high as 6.4 km/s, at depths between 6 and 8 km, can be best explained by compositional changes between adjoining basement units to the north and south. South of the Ringkoebing-Fyn High another high velocity basement unit is encountered and most probably represents a basement affected by the Caledonian orogeny. Along this profile on Langeland the positions of the Caledonian Deformation Front and the northern limit of the Zechstein deposits coincide.

    Description: Sediments obtained from the NE Thetis Deep during the Sonne cruise SO-29 consist of a manganite-facies and various types of Fe-facies (hematite, magnetite, goethite, and lepidocrocite facies). The sediments have a chemical and mineralogical composition similar to some of the lithological units previously described from the Atlantis II Deep, 160 km to the southeast. In contrast to the Atlantis II Deep, no stable brine pool recently exists in the NE Thetis Deep. However, based on the Fe/Mn fractionation in the Fe-facies types an intermittent brine filling of the NE Thetis Deep has probably existed. We propose that the formation of the brine pools correlate to the volume of discharging fluids. The chronology of hydrothermal deposition in the NE Thetis Deep seems to correlate with similar events in the Atlantis II Deep, suggesting that major tectonic events in the Red Sea may have caused large-scale pulses of hydrothermal activity.

    Description: Productivity regime and phytoplankton size structure are described for two different epipelagic systems in the tropical/subtropical Northeast Atlantic Ocean investigated during 9–11 day drift studies in spring 1989 in the JGOFS North Atlantic Bloom Experiment, 18°N, 30°W and 33°N, 20°W. At the 18°N study site, an oligotrophic system was encountered. The water column above the main pycnocline at about 50–60 m depth was nutrient-depleted, and both chlorophyll and primary production displayed subsurface maxima at the nutricline. Picoplankton was the dominant size fraction, accounting for 78–90% of chlorophyll and 83–98% of primary production. Synechococcus-type coccoid cyanobacteria were the dominant picoplankters. The hydrographic situation was characterized by high small-scale variability; the most interesting feature was the intrusion of nutrient-depleted Subtropical Salinity Maximum Water into the euphotic zone, whose impacts on the productivity regime are discussed. At 33°N study site, a post-bloom situation was encountered. Although the euphotic zone was nutrient-depleted, higher amounts of larger phytoplankton were present, the contribution of picoplankton being 42–53% of chlorophyll and 42–86% of primary production. Over the course of the drift study, subsurface maxima of chlorophyll and productivity evolved, the contribution of picoplankton having increased. Picocyanobacteria again were the dominant picoplankters. At both study sites the profiles of abundance ratios of picocyanobacteria to picoeucaryotes cell numbers proved to be a useful tool to characterize water masses.

    Description: The origin and the spreading of the shallow Mediterranean water core (Ms) in the Iberian basin is discussed with a quasi-synoptic hydrographic data set enhanced by chlorofluoromethane (CFM) measurements. Its characteristic density level is found to be σt = 27.4. Characterized by high temperature and CFM values, Ms enters the Iberian basin in the region of Cape St Vincent between depths of 500–750 dbar. A heat anomaly of 〉11.8 × 109 J m−2 is chosen as the boundary between the presence of Ms and the background field. The core is found in a tongue-like shape as well as in separate isolated eddies of both cyclonic and anticyclonic circulation. Using the optimum multiparameter analysis (Tomczak and Large, 1989, Journal of Geophysical Research, 94, 16141–16149), the North Atlantic Central Water (NACW), which mixes with the Mediterranean outflow to form Ms, turned out to be in the mean 1°C warmer and 0.11 saltier than in regions with minor Mediterranean influence. This points to the Gulf of Cadiz as the origin of Ms, where the Mediterranean oufflows is in contact with NACW of the appropriate characteristics.

    Description: Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analyses of organic concentrates from eastern Mediterranean surface water show that dissolved fossil fuel residues are dominated by unsubstituted aromatic hydrocarbons and heterocyclic aromatics and thus resemble products of incomplete combustion. Deviating from this interpretation, preferential photochemical oxidation of alkyl-substituted aromatics is suggested as the principal causative mechanism, although, especially near land-based sources. the influence of combustion-derived unsubstituted aromatics is not defined. Total concentrations of dissolved aromatics as determined by GC-FID (flame ionization detection) and GC-MS from a limited data subset were in reasonable agreement with UV fluorescence measurements of dissolved/dispersed oil residues. The same preponderance of unsubstituted aromatics over their alkyl derivatives was found in extracts of the particulate phase, but concentrations were small relative to alkanes and/or alkenes of recent marine biosynthetic origin. CPI (carbon preference index) values of higher molecular weight n-alkanes indicated varying contributions of plant waxes to the particulate hydrocarbon pool. CPI values of corresponding dissolved n-alkanes were found to be near unity, indicating fossil fuel origin. Despite differences in higher molecular weight n-alkane CPI values and the predominance of recent biosynthetic aliphatics, the similarity of dissolved and particulate aromatic fractions suggests limited adsorption by particles of fossil fuel derived hydrocarbons and heterocyclics.

    Description: Saudi Arabian coastal waters near sandy beaches, severely contaminated with crude oil released in Kuwait during the 1991 Gulf War, as well as underlying sediments and a few bivalves, were analysed to assess concentrations and composition of petrogenic hydrocarbon mixtures and structurally related oxidation products. Concentrations of dissolved oil residues determined by UV spectrofluorometry (UVF) near oil deposits on beaches did not exceed 3.5 μg l−1; concentrations dropped to approximately 1/10th of this value a few miles offshore. Gravimetric concentrations of unfractionated lipophilic material extracted from large volumes of seawater at the same stations were up to 10 times those determined by UVF. After chromatography on silica gel, individual petroleum hydrocarbons in the low polarity fractions and oxidation products in the polar fractions were characterized by their spectra (GC/MS) and quantitated by Selected Ion Monitoring (SIM) GC/MS. Concentrations of oxidation products (ketones, aldehydes, alcohols) of aromatic hydrocarbons exceeded those of their parent compounds by more than an order of magnitude. Significant concentrations were also found of the presumably pyrogenic triplett sensitizer anthraquinone. Contributions to polar fractions of water extracts by biosynthesized lipids were negligible. UVF determinations appear to underestimate concentrations of dissolved oil residues, because many oxidation products have lower fluorescence quantum yields than the respective parent hydrocarbons. Their ecotoxicological properties are unknown. Concentrations measured in sediments by UVF ranged from 13 to 540 μg g−1 dry wt and 0.5 to 103 μg g−1 as measured by gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (FID GC). Bivalves ranged from 0.8 to 1.5 μg mg−1 extractable organic matter (EOM) by UVF, and 0.1 to 0.3 μg mg−1 EOM by GC analysis. PAHs were identified in sediment and bivalve extracts by GC/MS and quantitated by SIM GC/MS. None of the relatively water soluble alkylbenzene photo-oxidation products found in water samples nor any higher molecular weight quinones could be detected in sediment extracts. However, ion chromatograms strongly suggest the presence of numerous high molecular weight aromatics in that matrix.

    Description: As part of the NOAA/ROPME/MSRC sponsored assessment of the coast of Saudi Arabia, heavily impacted by the large oil spills of the 1991 Gulf War, we measured benthic community respiration (R) and primary production (P) rates in shallow subtidal basins near heavily oiled coastlines. Study sites were located in zones predicted to be basins of maximum deposition of any oiled sediments likely to wash off the adjacent coast and in reference bays predicted to be clean and unaffected. We measured oxygen exchange using in situ benthic respirometers and analysed petroleum hydrocarbon (PHC) levels in the near surface sediments at five stations. We concentrated our efforts in mud habitats to complement related studies in seagrass habitats. Measured community R rates ranged from a low of 700 μM m2 h−1 in coarse sand sediments with total organic carbon content (TOC) of only 0.16% of dry wt to the highest rate of 2184 μm m−2 h−1 in finer mud-sand habitats with 0.39% TOC. All measured rates were in the range of literature values for shallow marine sediments at temperatures of 17 to 19°C. Sediment oil content was 13–540 μg g−1 dry wt by ultraviolet fluorescence (UVF) analysis and 0.5–103 μg g−1 by gas chromatography (GC). Benthic P rates, calculated as light minus dark changes in dissolved oxygen, ranged from a low of 1162 μm m−2 h−1 at the most heavily oiled site to a high of 5216 μm m−2 h−1 at less oiled sites. While a weak inverse relationship between benthic P and sediment oil content was not significant statistically due to the small number of samples, a significant inverse relationship was found between the ratio of production to respiration (P/R) and the total petroleum content of the sediments by UVF. The effect appears to be driven more by differences in production than an effect on respiration which showed little relationship with either oil content or productivity. We conclude that within 1 year after the oil grounded on the intertidal sands of Saudi Arabia, the levels of oil in subtidal benthic sediments had decreased in most habitats to levels that did not show community stress by our oxygen measurements. Rather, long term damage to benthic subtidal habitats was limited only to enclosed bays adjacent to the most heavily oiled coastlines. Preliminary estimates of yearly P converted to carbon units indicates that the shallow mud sediments of the Gulf are at least as productive as most oligotrophic water columns. Since benthic habitats covered by seagrass, algae beds or coral reefs are likely to have even higher production rates, we conclude that benthic processes contribute significantly to the overall carbon flux in the Gulf ecosystem.

    Description: Oil released into the sea undergoes immediate compositional changes as a result of processes of volatilization, dissolution, particle adsorption, and microbial and photochemical decomposition. Based on our observation of the molecular composition of oil residues dissolved in subtropical ocean waters, we hypothesized photo-oxidation of alkyl-substituted polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and heterocyclic aromatics in preference to their unsubstituted parent compounds. As the ratios of alkyl to parent PAH are used to assign sources to contaminant residues in environmental samples, we tested the hypothesis in a controlled experiment: membrane-filtered seawater collected near the island of Bermuda was saturated with a Nigerian crude oil and exposed to natural sunlight in a quartz flask. Comparison with a dark control under otherwise identical conditions served to differentiate between sunlight-induced and microbially mediated decreases in concentration and changes in composition. We conclude on the basis of UV fluorescence, GC-MS, and microbiological data that sunlight-induced oxidation is responsible for the rapid loss of the UV fluorescence signal for total aromatic hydrocarbons and for the preferential depletion of the alkyl-substituted PAH and heterocyclic aromatics. Structure-dependent selectivity in the photo-oxidation of dissolved oil residues may thus result in residual hydrocarbon blends which could be mistaken as originating from incomplete combustion processes.

    Description: In the Deep Western Boundary Current (DWBC) mean velocities obtained by the F11/F12 dating method are far smaller (1–2 cm s−1) than direct velocity measurements (5–20 cm s−1). To resolve this discrepancy, a simple box model is presented that uses the ideas of Pickartet al. (1989, Physical Oceanography, 19, 940–951) to parametrize turbulent diffusion of the current with its surroundings. In contrast to previous models, however, the boundary conditions include all water masses forming the lower part of the DWBC (Denmark Strait Overflow Water, Iceland Scotland Overflow Water and Northeast Atlantic Water). The model-derived mean velocity of the DWBC leads to tracer concentrations that have to fit the observed F11 and F12 distributions, the F11/F12 ratios, and the tritium distributions. Moreover, the model area is extended from south of the Faroe bank along the continental margin of the American continent to 10°S. The model assumes uniform velocity and uniform turbulent mixing along the flow path of the DWBC, and enhanced turbulent mixing in the vicinity of the current compared to the ocean's interior allows the surrounding waters, which remain motionless, to accumulate tracers. The highest mean velocity of the DWBC, which results in model F12, F11, and 3H distributions as well as F11/F12 ratios, compatible to measurements of these tracers along the western boundary, are 4.8 cm s−1. Variations in the composition of the DWBC as well as changes in the time history of the source water masses do not increase the range of the model velocities.

    Description: Autochthonous organic frameworks from the deeper fore reef (−50 m to −110 m) of the Red Sea are composed predominantly of incrusting calcareous red algae and foraminifera. This foralgal crust facies is represented by three types. The first is a pure foralgal crust community which forms small buildups with bumpy surfaces. Calcareous red algae and incrusting formainifera comprise more than 60 % of the biogenous fabric. The second type is a framework in which foralgal crusts are secondary binders around the hermatypic deep water scleractinian Leptoseris fragilis. The third type occurs on drowned reefs, exhibiting a mixture of Pleistocene shallow water and present day deep water binding species. Therefore, the morphology of this subfacies is more governed by an inherited relief, characterized by pinnacles and barrel shaped towers. This present day deep water foralgal community started to develop within the Cretaceous in shallow water environments, composed predominantly of corallinaceans, peyssonneliaceans, and subordinately of acervulinid foraminifera. With the beginning of the Neogene, the shallow water community of reef binding foraminifera and calcareous algae changed and become dominated by the foraminifera Acervulina. The living foralgal crusts of the deeper fore reef in the Red Sea represent a binding community of Upper Cretaceous and Palaeogene shallow water environments which has shifted in greater water depth with time.

    Description: The usually high concentrations of Zn, Pb, Cd, and Cu in the most recently accreted portions of ferromanganese nodules from the western Baltic Sea are thought to reflect increased metal input due to anthropogenic mobilization. If so, the point of increase represents a time horizon within the structure of the nodule. Similar trace metal distributions of radiometrically dated sediments from the same area suggest that the ferromanganese nodules have grown in thickness between 0.02 and 0.16 mm yr−1. From this growth rate anthropogenic Zn flux to the nodule surface was calculated to be 80 mg m−2 yr−1.

    Description: Microbial decomposition of organic matter in recent sediments of the Landsort Deep—an anoxic basin of the central Baltic Sea—resulted in the formation of a characteristic assemblage of authigenic mineral precipitates of carbonates, sulfides. phosphates and amorphous silica, The dominant crystalline phases are a mixed Mn-carbonate [(Mn0.85Ca0.10Mg0.05)CO3]. Mn-sulfide [MnS] and Fecarbonate [FeCO3]. Amorphous Fe-sulfide [FeS]. Mn-phosphate [Mn3(PO4)2] and a mixed Fe-Ca-phosphate [(Fe0.86Ca0.14)3(PO4)2] were identified by their chemical compositions only. The variability in composition of these solid phases and their mode of occurrence as a co-existing assemblage constrains the conditions and solution composition from which they precipitated. Estimates of activities for dissolved Fe. Mn. PO4, CO3 and S in equilibrium with such an assemblage are close to those found in recent anoxic interstitial water-sediment systems. It is important to have detailed knowledge of the composition and stability conditions of these solid precipitates in order to refine stoichiometric models of interstitial nutrient regeneration in anoxic sediments.

    Description: Sediments of 13 piston cores from opposite continental slopes of the South China Sea, off southern China and Sabah (northern Borneo), were analyzed by sedimentological methods and dated by oxygen isotope stratigraphy. Sediments mostly consist of hemipelagic clay with 20% carbonate off Sabah and 40% off China. We calculated terrigenous and carbonate accumulation rates for up to 11 time-slices from the Holocene to oxygen-isotope stage 6. Terrigenous accumulation rates generally increase with water depth and reach a maximum at the middle slope off Sabah and at the lower continental slope off China. During glacial and interglacial times this distribution pattern did not markedly change, despite an increase of accumulation rates for glacial periods by a factor of 2 to 5 compared to interglacial periods. Rates are negatively correlated with positions of sea level, which controls the partition of fluviatile terrigenous material for deposition on shelf, slope, and abyssal plain. Carbonate accumulation rates are higher off China by a factor of 2 compared to Sabah, probably indicating higher calcareous plankton productivity.

The absolute ages for the zonal boundaries were determined by the paleomagmetic record of Site 94–608.     Description: Goban Spur lies on the continental margin of northwest Europe, southwest of Ireland. It is a marginal plateau underlain by Hercynian granites and Palaeozoic sediments, which form large horsts, grabens and tilted fault blocks with a trend that is approximately parallel to the main Celtic/Armorican Shelf edge. The spur is thought to be a westward continuation of the buoyant Cornubian Ridge, and is bounded to the north and south by large fault lines which probably represent reactivation of Hercynian structural trends. The continental basement is further divided longitudinally into a low-lying outer zone (Intermediate Zone) and a high inner region (Goban Spur proper). The ocean/continent boundary is thought to lie at the outer edge of the Intermediate Zone, Sea-floor spreading anomalies immediately west of the Intermediate Zone suggest that the adjacent ocean crust was created prior to anomaly 33 (say at ca. 90 m.y. B.P.). The sedimentary sequence on Goban Spur can be subdivided into four layers which can be tentatively correlated with the stratigraphic succession on the Meriadzek Terrace (IPOD sites). Such a correlation suggests that the lowermost sediment layer (?Jurassic-Albian) represents a tectono-sedimentary rift infill, and that Layers 2–4 (Upper Cretaceous to Quaternary) were deposited during slow epeirogenic downwarping of the plateau and that the sedimentary processes involved both draping and strong current moulding. The relatively buoyant nature of Inner Goban Spur has inhibited the accumulation of a thick post-rifting sedimentary sequence (700–1000 m), and has shielded the Intermediate Zone from downslope mass movements of material. This has resulted in the accumulation of an anomalously thin post-rift stage outer margin sediment prism (ca. 1000 m) compared to most continent rises (up to 10 km).

    Description: A bathymetric map of the deep-sea floor off southeastern Africa shows the Agulhas Plateau to be separated from the continental margin of southeastern Africa by a narrow (50 km) elongate depression, the Agulhas Passage, which acts as a deep-water connection between the Agulhas and Transkei basins. Three regionally developed sediment layers occur in the deep (〉 4500 m) Transkei Basin/Agulhas Passage area. With the aid of a simple ocean crust sinking/carbonate compensation level (CCL) model these layers are related to the sedimentation history of the area. The model suggests that acoustic basement (Horizon X) represents Lower Cretaceous limestones draped over oceanic basement, and that this is overlain by an acoustically transparent sequence of pelagic/terrigenous material (Horizon A) that was deposited during a lengthy period (95 m.y.) beneath the carbonate compensation level. Post-Late Miocene sedimentation (Horizons B and C) has probably taken place above the CCL. Local sedimentation has always been influenced by strong sea-floor currents, but since middle Palaeogene times these currents have operated on a regional scale and have generated numerous large ridge and billow-like bed forms.

    Description: Many occurrences of mineral resources in ocean water, on the ocean floor and in its deeper parts have long been well-known. This is readily understandable, because numerous ancient mineral products which are exploited on land were originally formed in marine milieus as far back as the Precambrian , e.g., marine sedimentary iron ores, rock salt, potassium, phosphate and manganese , as well as petroleum and natural gas. This book deals with ores in sediments, and in sedimentary and volcanic rocks. According to the Concise Oxford Dictionary (Fowler and Fowler , 1964), ore is defined as "solid native mineral aggregate from which valuable constituents not necessarily metal may be usefully extracted". Therefore , in tllis chapter only mineral resources of inorganic origin in ocean water and on the ocean floor are discussed and not those of organic derivation, although the existence of petroleum, natural gas and, to some extent, of coal in the subsurface of the ocean shelves is of greater economic importance. The amount of oil and gas produced in 1969 represented more than 90% by value of all mineral resources obtained from the oceans and ocean floors. Ore deposits in bed-rock formations of the shelf region, such as those which are exploited near Cornwall (England) and Newfoundland for example, are also irrelevant, as these are merely extensions of discoveries on the nearby mainland. The purpose of this chapter is to give a general review of the (inorganic) mineral resources of the oceans and the ocean floors . In this respect, not only are the economically important products which are already in use discussed, but also those materials which, in their oceanic environment, can become of economic value in the near or more remote future. For a better understanding of the existence of such materials, some deposits have also had to be reviewed which will not become of economic value . Since some contributions in this book are specifically dedicated to Recent marine ferromanganese deposits and Recent phosphorite deposits, these mineral resources are only briefly discussed in tllis chapter. (For details on Recent marine and lacustrine manganese deposits see Chapters 7 and 8 by Glasby/Read and by Callender/Bowser, respectively, in Volume 7.) The litarature on the mineral (inorganic) resources of the oceans and ocean floors is extremely extensive, so that a choice had to be made and, therefore, the bibliography added to this chapter consists mainly of recent publications.

    Description: Planktic foraminifers Neogloboquadrina pachyderma (sin.) from 87 eastern and central Arctic Ocean surface sediment samples were analyzed for stable oxygen and carbon isotope composition. Additional results from 52 stations were taken from the literature. The lateral distribution of δ18O (Full-size image (〈1 K)) values in the Arctic Ocean reveals a pattern of roughly parallel, W-E stretching zones in the Eurasian Basin, each ∼0.5‰ wide on the δ18O scale. The low horizontal and vertical temperature variability in the Arctic halocline waters (0–100 m) suggests only little influence of temperature on the oxygen isotope distribution of N. pachyderma (sin.). The zone of maximum δ18O values of up to 3.8‰ is situated in the southern Nansen Basin and relates to the tongue of saline (〉 33%.) Atlantic waters entering the Arctic Ocean through the Fram Strait. δ18O values decrease both to the Barents Shelf and to the North Pole, in accordance with the decreasing salinities of the halocline waters. In the Nansen Basin, a strong N-S δ18O gradient is in contrast with a relatively low salinity change and suggests contributions from different freshwater sources, i.e. salinity reduction from sea ice meltwater in the south and from light isotope waters (meteoric precipitation and river-runoff) in the northern part of the basin. North of the Gakkel Ridge, δ18O and salinity gradients are in good accordance and suggest less influence of sea ice melting processes. The δ13C (Full-size image (〈1 K)) values of N. pachyderma (sin.) from Arctic Ocean surface sediment samples are generally high (0.75–0.95‰). Lower values in the southern Eurasian Basin appear to be related to the intrusion of Atlantic waters. The high δ13C values are evidence for well ventilated surface waters. Because the perennial Arctic sea ice cover largely prevents atmosphere-ocean gas exchange, ventilation on the seasonally open shelves must be of major importance. Lack of δ13C gradients along the main routes of the ice drift from the Siberian shelves to the Fram Strait suggests that primary production (i.e. CO2 consumption) does probably not change the CO2 budget of the Arctic Ocean significantly.

    Description: The Vema Channel represents a prominent location for the nortward flow of bottom water in the subtropical western South Atlantic. A recent multibeam echo-sounding survey of the Vema Sill on board F.S. Meteor revealed a narrow and shallow portion of the Vema Channel at 31°12′S, 39°24′W, the Vema Sill. The survey also showed the remarkably asymmetric shape of the sill region, suggesting an interaction between the bottom flow and the shape of the channel.

    Description: Thick sediments (maximum of at least 4900 m) infill the Natal Valley, which lies between the coast of South Africa/Mozambique and the Mozambique Ridge. Eight physiographic provinces are recognised in the valley, and their boundaries can be related to well-defined sediment thickness or facies discontinuities within the basin infill. The acoustic stratigraphy of the area is established by reference to two regionally developed reflecting horizons, which, on the basis of previously published borehole and seismic data, are tentatively identified as mid-Cretaceous (McDuff) and mid-Cainozoic (Angus) hiatuses or important facies boundaries. Sedimentation began in the Natal Valley before mid-Cretaceous times and since then sediment dispersion has been strongly influenced by the disposition of large basement (? volcanic) highs: the approximately NE—SW Almirante Leite and Naudé ridges, and the larger N—S Mozambique Ridge. There is abundant evidence that sedimentation in the vicinity of these ridges has been current-controlled since at least mid-Cainozoic (Angus) times. The two main terrigenous sediment input points have been the Tugela and Limpopo rivers, which have large sediment cones adjacent to their mouths.

    Description: Two major meltwater events are documented in cores from the NW Labrador Sea. One occurred ca. 20,000 14C yr B.P. in association with deposition of a major detrital carbonate unit. Both prior to and after this event, δ18O values of near-surface planktonic foraminifera were 4.5%, indicating fully enriched glacial values. A younger event (ca. 14,000 14 C yr B.P.) is characterized by a dramatic change in δ18O from 4.5 to 2.0% and coincided with the retreat of ice from the outer SE Baffin Shelf, possibly into Hudson Strait. These meltwater events coincide with Heinrich (H) layers 1 and 2 from North Atlantic sediments. The 14,000 14C yr B.P. meltwater event indicates that the eastern margin of the Laurentide Ice Sheet also underwent rapid retreat at approximately the same time as other ice sheet margins around the NE North Atlantic. A third major detrital carbonate event at the base of HU87-033-009, possibly correlative with Heinrich layer 3, occurred ca. 33,960 ± 675 14 C yr B.P.; however, this is older than the accepted date for H-3 of 27,000 14C yr B.P. and may be H-4.

    Description: Four palaeogeographical reconstructions are presented for the southern Cape covering the period Late Permian to Late Cretaceous. This time spans the commencement to an advanced stage of breakup of Gondwanaland, during which the area moved from a mid-continental, high latitude, to an ocean-dominated, middle latitude position. These movements can be traced in facies changes and erosional cycles associated with the rift between West Gondwana and Antarctica (proto southwest Indian Ocean) and the later rift between South America and Africa (proto southeast Atlantic Ocean).

    Description: Ostracod faunas at six locations are compared, and related to distributions in an Atlantic Ocean-wide data base. Five, widely developed, vertical faunal sequences are recognised at particular levels within deep water-masses: Henryhowella Fauna (lower part of Antarctic Intermediate Water); Krithe Fauna (Upper North Atlantic Deep Water); Poseidonamicus-Bosquetina Fauna (upper part of Lower NADW); Dutoitella Fauna (lower part of Lower NADW); Legitimocythere Fauna (Antarctic Bottom Water). These faunas are correlated with previously established deep water benthic foraminiferal assemblages, and their possible palaeo-oceanographic use is discussed.

    Description: The Agulhas Bank, which forms the continental margin on the southern tip of Africa, consists of a thick Meso-Cainozoic sedimentary sequence (up to 6.2 km) resting on and behind pre-Mesozoic continental acoustic basement. The stratigraphy of this sequence is outlined and its history and facies variations mentioned where they are known. Refraction seismic velocity and bottom sample data indicate a basic three-fold subdivision of the Mesozoic sequence, which can be correlated with the onshore succession in the Algoa Basin. It is separated by a major hiatus from the Cainozoic sediments, which consist of a Palaeogene and Neogene sequence subdivided by another well-defined level of erosion. Various formations within the Cainozoic are defined and named. An outline of the bathymetry of the eastern Agulhas Bank is also given.

    Description: Live observations, cytological characteristics and biometrical measurements on Miliolinella subrotunda (Montagu, 1803) sampled from the northern and southern Atlantic Ocean are presented.M. subrotunda facultatively constructs a long, detritic tube lifting the test several millimeters above the sediment surface. A thickened conical base anchors the construction on the sediment surface and a long, flexible tube protrudes into the velocity profile of the bottom currents. The miliolid test is placed on top, surrounded by the uppermost part of the tube. This construction allows the organisms to feed in the particle stream above the sediment surface. In comparison to species living in and on the surface sediments,M. subrotunda apparently shows higher nutritional values in food ingested and larger amounts of reserve substances. Characteristics of the shape and structure that reduce drag on the tubes include a broadened conical base, a flexible tube, and a rounded top. From biometrical measurements it is concluded, that the tubes are constructed over a short period of their ontogeny.

    Description: For over thirty years man has studied “outer space” and installed satellites which watch the surface of the Earth. The great depths of the world ocean are, however, practically unknown and there is an urgent need to put abyssal benthic laboratories into “inner space” in order to study basic phenomena of interest to marine science and climatology as well as man's impact on the oceans. In view of the numerous problems related to global change, as a first step emphasis should first be on the role of the oceans and their inherent processes, which are the focus of such international programmes as the World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE) and the Joint Global Ocean Flux Study (JGOFS). Multi-disciplinary registration of key events at selected key sites investigating the variability in time and space are of the utmost importance. The same methods and techniques must be used for the study of human impacts on the deep oceans caused by mining of metalliferous resources and by waste disposal as well as in basic studies. However, the investigation of the inner space of our planet has certain requirements. As long-term and large-scale investigations become more and more important, development of automized systems, largely independent from research vessels will be required. This will demand high capacities of energy for all technical functions as well as high storage capacities for data and samples. As a consequence the needs for two different—although overlapping—functional approaches are defined for future deep-sea deployments. (A) A system for long-term registration of the natural variability and long-term monitoring of human impacts: (B) A system for short-term observations and short-time experimentations. This report summarizes their technological demands. The envisioned interdisciplinary technology should deliver information on physical, biological and geochemical processes and their variabilities in the deep oceans. The prospected systems need to have the ability for real time video observation, data transfer and experimental manipulation, as well as sensing and sampling facilities with large storage capacities for long-term deployments. Prospective costs of the described multipurpose abyssal benthic laboratory will presumably exceed the funds for deep-sea research of a single country. A joint European effort could solve this problem and help to manifest a leading role for European marine science in international deep-sea and global change research.

    Description: The Houtman Abrolhos Islands, situated at the western passive margin of the Australian continent, consist of a series of shelf-edge coral reefs. The central platforms of the reefs are Late Pleistocene in age and are generally some 3–5 m above present sea level. The uppermost part of the Last Interglacial reefs normally has an upward-shallowing sequence, consisting of coral framestone, coralline algal bindstone and skeletal grainstone to rudstone. This sequence represents deposition in water depths of less than 2 m, and provides a good indicator of sea level. High-precision mass-spectrometric dates of corals from the Abrolhos reefs, including dates obtained from drill cores, arological, isotopic and stratigraphic criteria are established for the selection of suitable samples for dating and for assessing the reliability of dates. Using the screened dates and the stratigraphic evidence, the timing and character of the sea level variations of the Last Interglacial in the Abrolhos region are examined. The data show that sea level of the Last Interglacial in the Abrolhos was 4 m below its present height by ca. 134 ka BP and probably reached about 2 m above present height at ca. 133 ka BP. The exact time at which sea level reached its peak (6 m above present sea level) cannot be determined from our data. But it is clear that the sea level high stand of the Last Interglacial lasted until ca. 116 ka BP and that for much of the Last Interglacial sea level at the Abrolhos was at a height of about 4 m above its present level

    Description: Three groups of REE patterns are observed for the sandstones and shales of the Middle Ordovician Austin Glen Member of the Normanskill Formation. One sandstone sample is enriched in middle and light rare earth elements. The majority of samples are light rare earth element (LREE) enriched with negative Eu-anomalies and flat heavy rare earth elements (HREEs), whereas a third group appears to have lost LREEs and middle rare earth element (MREEs). Homogeneous neodymium isotopic compositions for all samples at about the time of deposition, ϵNd (470 Ma) = −8.2 ± 1.1(2SD), indicate that the source of the Austin Glen Member was well mixed and that the neodymium had a long-term enriched history. The differences in the shape and abundances of the REE patterns combined with the neodymium isotope characteristics of the samples lead us to the conclusion that samarium and neodymium were fractionated and that the neodymium isotopic system might have been disturbed at about the time of deposition (470 Ma). Most samples appear to have been affected by this process. The two most altered shales lost about half of their neodymium and their ratios are higher than the ratios of average shales. These two shales give clearly erroneous mantle-extraction ages, but the average TDM of the provenance can still be deduced (1700–1800 Ma) from the least disturbed sandstones with normal upper crustal ratios. Accordingly, this study demonstrates that the REEs may be transported and neodymium isotopes may be reequilibrated under certain sedimentary conditions (e.g., diagenesis). However, in spite of evidence for REE redistribution, provenance information (TDM, original REE patterns) may still be inferred.

    Description: Petroleum impregnated sediments and massive sulfides have been found in two deeps of the northerns Red Sea. Biological marker distributions in extracts and polar fraction degradation products were analyzed in order to elucidate the source of the petroliferous material. Two organic phases could be distinguished according to their source and maturity. The amounts of n-alkanes show a marked decrease with depth, whereas the concentrations of various branched and cyclic hydrocarbons increase, resulting in a humpof unresolvable compounds in a depth as shallow as 300 cm. Changes in concentrations and distributions of hopanoids in the Kebrit Deep sediments indicate a rapid increase of maturity with depth. The deepest core section (300 cm) and the masive sulfide reveal comparable maturation indices typical for mature oils. By chemical degradation of the polar fractions a series of C40-isoprenoids was obtained, which reveals a considerable contribution from methanogenic and thermophilic archapbacteria to the immature organic matter. The data suggest that petroliferous material ofthermogenic origin migrates through the younger sequences, superimposes the autochthonous organic substances in the sediments and furthermore, forms asphaltic impregnations in the massive sulfides.

    Description: The winter ice-regime of the 〈80 km wide Alaskan Beaufort Sea shelf is characterized by compression and shearing, resulting in the formation of major grounded pressure ridge systems stabilizing the fast ice on the mid-shelf, and essentially no open-water areas. In contrast, the winter ice-regime of the 500-km wide Laptev Sea shelf is controlled by winds blowing from land to sea, and is therefore dilational. A perennial polynya borders the hundreds of kilometers-wide and very smooth fast ice offshore. In this body of open water, rapidly forming ice is continuously advected offshore by the mean wind field, making the Laptev Sea the single major ice factory for the Arctic Ocean and Transpolar Drift. Conversely, with summer warming this dark polynya turns into an area of high heat gain, which results in the retreat of the ice edge to a much higher latitude and greater distance (〉500 km) from the mainland than in the Beaufort Sea. As a result, the annual freeze-up does not incorporate old, deep-draft ice, and with a lack of compression, such deep-draft ice is not generated in situ, as on the Beaufort Sea shelf. The Laptev Sea has as much as 1000 km of fetch at the end of summer, when freezing storms move in and large (6 m) waves can form. Also, for the first three winter months, the polynya lies inshore at a water depth of only 10 m. Turbulence and freezing are excellent conditions for sediment entrainment by frazil and anchor ice, when compared to conditions in the short-fetched Beaufort Sea. We expect entrainment to occur yearly. Different from the intensely ice-gouged Beaufort Sea shelf, hydraulic bedforms probably dominate in the Laptev Sea. Corresponding with the large volume of ice produced, more dense water is generated in the Laptev Sea, possibly accompanied by downslope sediment transport. Thermohaline convection at the midshelf polynya, together with the reduced rate of bottom disruption by ice keels, may enhance benthic productivity and permit establishment of open-shelf benthic communities which in the Beaufort Sea can thrive only in the protection of barrier islands. Indirect evidence for high benthic productivity is found in the presence of walrus, who also require year-round open water. By contrast, lack of a suitable environment restricts walrus from the Beaufort Sea, although over 700 km farther to the south. We could speculate on other consequences of the different ice regimes in the Beaufort and Laptev Seas, but these few examples serve to point out the dangers of exptrapolating from knowledge gained in the North American Arctic to other shallow Arctic shelf settings.
