Notes: Abstract Thermal Difference Reflectance (TDR) Spectroscopy has been used to determinethe superconducting gap parameter for several of the superconducting cupratesover a wide range of energies, ω extending from the infrared (0.3 eV)to the ultraviolet (5.3 eV). A contribution to the pairing is found in eachcase from the phonons, and from an electronic excitation with energy thatranges from 1.6 eV and 2.3 eV for the different compounds attributed to thed 9−d 10 L charge-transfer excitation between Cu and O. In every case thereflectance ratio between the superconducting and normal state, Rs/Rnplotted as a function of photon energy can be well described using theEliashberg theory. The theory also predicted a characteristic shape for thelow energy part of such spectra due to the phonons. We report theobservation of this feature in measurements on films of Tl2Ba2CaCu2O8. Wediscuss the significance of the success of the Eliashberg theory inexplaining these results and successfully predicting new effects in thelight of the correlations that had been thought to invalidate such atheoretical approach.

Notes: Abstract The electronic states have been studied in the quasi-one-dimensional DMET-TSeF system, which includes several superconductors and nonsuperconductors. The origin of the different ground states has been examined by using the tight-binding band calculation. The type of the superconductivity has been discussed, considering the electronic wave functions that constitute the Fermi surface.

Notes: Abstract A series of quenching experiments were conducted to understand the sequence of reactions that occur during the synthesis of doped Hg1223, (Hg, A)Ba2Ca2Cu3O y , A = Re, Bi, and Pb (HgA1223). The formation and decomposition of the intermediate phases during the high-temperature reaction were followed as a function of temperature. HgA1223 phase forms over a wide range of temperatures, 750–950°C, 750–880°C, and 840–880°C for A = Re, Pb, and Bi, respectively. At T〈750°C, HgA1212 phase forms for A = Re and Pb. Based on the results of quenching experiments, heat treatment conditions were optimized for the synthesis of pure HgA1223 phase using commercial BaCaCuO precursor powders. A reduced-temperature annealing stage after the high-temperature reaction helps in grain growth and improves the microstructural characteristics of HgA1223 samples. Control of Hg pressure during the reaction is crucial for achieving phase purity, grain growth, and texture in the final products. A novel approach for the control of Hg pressure during the synthesis of HgA1223, which consists of using CaHgO2 as an external Hg source, is reported. HgA1223 samples synthesized using the new synthesis protocol exhibit improved microstructural and superconducting properties.

Notes: Abstract The high-T c superconducting system YBa2Cu3Oδ:Li (123) was investigated by microwave absorption. The effect of neutron irradiation on the 123 phase as well as the dependence of the resulting modification both on the neutron fluence and on the doping behavior with Li are discussed. The results show a significant improvement of the superconducting characteristics: critical temperature, phase homogeneity, and critical current densities for a certain neutron fluence. We have found that the optinum neutron fluence for irradiation is 4.98×1021 m−2.

Notes: Abstract The Hg-1223 and Hg-1234 phases were synthesized using the program-controlled high pressure chamber. The variation of the oxygen content in the starting oxides mixture “HgBa2Ca3Cu4Ox”, performed by changing BaO/BaO2 and Cu2O/CuO ratios influences significantly the phase formation. Dependence of Tc vs. a-parameter for HgBa2Ca2Cu3O8+δ superconductor has a cupola-shaped character, as it was found for the lower members of the homologous series.

Notes: Abstract The upper critical field B c2 of the organic superconductor λ-(BETS)2GaCl4 has been determined from resistance measurements for orientation of the magnetic field along three perpendicular crystallographic directions. The Ginzburg–Landau coherence length was estimated from the slope of B c2(T) curve near T c as 12.5 nm, 1.6 nm, and 12.5 nm for the a*-, b*-, and c-directions. Angular dependence of the critical field within highly conducting ac plane at 1.5 K was shown to possess two-fold symmetry, which can be related to the band structure anisotropy.

Notes: Abstract The role of pair breaking effects on the isotope effect coefficient is investigated using the generalized Abrikosov and Gorkov theory of superconductors. It is found that the pair breaking effects enhance the isotope effect coefficient. This provides a plausible explanation for the enhancement of the isotope effect coefficient as a function of impurity concentration in yttrium-, europium-, and lanthanum-based high-T c superconductors. It may also explain the very large value of the isotope effect coefficient in Rb3C60 superconductors provided some intrinsic disorder is assumed.

Notes: Abstract From SQUID measurements we determine the basic critical magnetic field values for bcc phase Ba6C60 superconductor and hence evaluate the major parameters of superconductivity in this material. A comparative analyses of these parameters observed for the alkaline-earth-doped vs. alkali-metal-doped C60 superconductors is presented. These two systems are found to differ substantially in their superconducting properties: for Ba6C60 we find that the upper critical fieldH c 2≈2 T, and the Ginzburg-Landau parameterκ≈15, as compared to the values 50 T and 100, respectively, for superconducting K3C60. On the other hand, the electronic properties for all the superconducting fullerenes are rather similar with, for example, the Fermi energyE F∼0.1 eV.

Notes: Abstract A millimeter wave spectrometer for frequencies between 100 and 350 GHz consisting of continuously tunable backward wave oscillators as sources and a quasioptical interferometer in the Mach-Zehnder configuration was used to measure the transmittivity in phase and amplitude of YBa2Cu3O7 thin films on NdGaO3 substrates. From the measured spectra we derived the real and imaginary part of the dynamic conductivityσ=σ 1+iσ 2 in the superconducting state as a function of temperature. Theσ 1(T) andσ 2(T) values at 300 GHz were compared to corresponding values at 19 GHz determined by surface impedance measurements of the same films using a shielded dielectric resonator. Our observed frequency dependence of bothσ 1(T) andσ 2(T) is consistent with a strong reduction of the quasiparticle scattering rateτ −1(T) with decreasing temperature belowT c .

Notes: Abstract A 1201-phase superconductor (Pb0.5Cu0.5)SrLaCuO5±δ exhibiting a zero-resistance (R=0) state at 21 K has been synthesized. Neutron Rietveld refinement of the structure shows substantial oxygen disorder in the (Pb/Cu)-O(3) monolayer and excess occupancy of oxygen at the O(3) sites. The superconducting behavior of (Pb0.5Cd0.5)SrLaCuO5±δ , prepared under identical conditions, yields a value ofT c (R=0) equal to 24 K. The presence of extra oxygen appears to be responsible for trapping of holes within the rock-salt (Pb/Cu)-O(3).

Notes: Abstract Superconductivity has long been speculated to result from charge carriers paired as mobile charged bosons. Although the pairing of carriers as small (single-site) bipolarons is known, small bipolarons readily localize. By contrast, large (multi-site) bipolarons, in analogy with large polarons, should be mobile. It is shown that large bipolarons can form in solids with very displaceable ions, e.g., many oxides. Large-polaronic (but not small-polaronic) carriers produce absorption spectra like the carrier-induced absorptions observed in cuprates. Redistribution of the self-trapped carriers of large bipolarons among sites of carriers' molecular orbitals in response to atomic motions lowers phonon frequencies. The dependence of the phonon zero-point energy on the spatial distribution of large bipolarons produces a phonon-mediated attraction between them. This dynamic quantum-mechanical attraction fosters the condensation of large bipolarons into a liquid. Superconductivity can result when the large-bipolarons' groundstate remains liquid rather than solidifying.

Notes: Abstract The results of studies of new Hg based cuprate superconductors are reported. Several members of a new family of (Hg,Tl)(Ba,Sr)Can−2CunOx high temperature superconductors have been synthesized. These compounds, which are analogs to the Hg-Ba-Ca- and Tl-Ba-Ca-layered cuprates, are multi-phased and have superconducting transition temperatures above 100 K. Incorporation of Hg appears to stabilize several of the Tl-compounds, including a double layer. Tl/Sr system, in a manner similar to the role that Pb plays in the Tl/Sr- and Bi/Sr-systems. It has been suggested that recent reports of resistive Tc's above 200 K in Hg based samples are due to the presence of free Hg. Magnetization measurements of such a sample confirm this hypothesis.

Notes: Abstract Y0.4Pr0.6Ba2−xCaxCu3O7−δ polycrystalline samples were prepared and investigated. The Ca substitution led to a structural variation toward tetragonal symmetry, possibly due to the structural modification within the Cu(1)O layer. Superconductivity and metallic conduction were recovered whenx≥0.2, giving one more evidence for the existence of the ion-size effect at the Ba site.

Notes: Abstract The effects of addition to YBa2Cu3O7−x of lithium halides (YBa2Cu3O7−x (LiF) y , and YBa2Cu3O7−x (LiCl) y ) on the structural, electric, magnetic, and transport properties are analyzed. Both structural and superconducting properties depend weakly on the lithium content up to y= 0.10. The critical temperature keeps on a value well above 91 K for a small amount of lithium halide (reaching 93.48K. for y= 0.02 in YBa2Cu3O7−x (LiF) y and 91.30 K in YBa2Cu3O7−x (LiCl) y ), but for higher concentration of Li it rapidly decreases (81.68K for y= 0.20). The same behavior is exhibited in the lower intragranular critical field. The intragranular critical current density depends on the magnetic field as a power law:j c∝B −α, with a lithium-concentration-dependent α. The voltage–current characteristics follow a law typical for granular superconductors, V∝(I−I c(B,T)) n(B,T). The dependence of the intergranular critical current, I c, and of the exponent, n, on temperature, magnetic field, and concentration is analyzed.

Notes: Abstract A nanosuperconductor was prepared and characterized in the present work. The nanosuperconductor consisted of nanocrystals with superconducting transition temperature, T c, of 88 K. Dimension of the nanocrystals is dozens nm in diameter and hundreds nm in length. The compound of the nanocrystals has a formula of Y4Ba8Cu12O27. Notes: Abstract A polaronic Hamiltonian is obtained for a dimer of length a, including an Einstein phonon of frequency Ω, a Holstein coupling g 0, and all the electronic one- and two-body terms consistent with a single orbital per site (the latter evaluated in terms of Wannier functions built from Gaussian atomic orbitals). In the quarter- and half-filled orbital cases, the possible ground states for varying a, at given g 0 and Ω, are identified by independent and simultaneous optimization of the electronic and phononic parameters.

Notes: Abstract A new Cd-containing superconductor with nominal composition ofCd0.8Ba2(Y0.7Ca0.4)Cu3.5O y was synthesized and investigated. The obtained Cd and Ca-doped 123 phase exhibits an orthorhombic (T c=80 K) or tetragonal (T c=65 K) modification depending on the reaction atmosphere. It was shown that the combined Cd and Ca substitution facilitates the 123 phase formation. The results of the EDX analysis, as well as the comparison of the obtained lattice parameters with those of undoped, Cd-doped, and Ca-doped 123 have shown that both Cd and Ca enter the 123 phase and form a new Cd–Ba–Y–Ca–Cu–O superconducting compound.

Notes: Abstract We present a systematic study on a large magnetoresistance in NbSe3 as a function of temperature under various pressures. The large magnetoresistance below T c2 is observed as long as the T c2-CDW phase exists. However, when the T c2-CDW phase is suppressed totally by high pressure and the superconducting phase is induced at the same time, no anomaly, including the large magnetoresistance, is induced by a magnetic field up to 12 T. The origin of the large magnetoresistance is discussed by considering normal carriers on the ungapped Fermi surface created on the CDW transition and comparing this magnetoresistance with the pressure-induced magnetoresistance that is newly observed above T c2.

Notes: Abstract The results of a systematic powder neutron study on Y1−x CaxBa2Cu3−y Co y O7±δ for A (x=y=0), B (x=0;y=0.2), C (x= 0;y=0.4), D (x=y=0.2), and E (x=y=0.4) are investigated with a view to understanding the relation between the structural parameters and superconductivity. Rietveld refinements of the structures show that: (a) Co substitutes at the chain Cu(1) sites only, except for sample E, where the presence of a minor amount of Co at the planar Cu(2) site cannot be ruled out; (b) Co substitution reduced thec-parameter, which is reduced even further upon substitution of Ca at the Y-sites; (c) the occupancy factors of the chain O(1) site indicate an average coordination of 4.8 and 5.1 for Co for samples B and C, but only 4 for D and E; (d) Cu/Co(1) atoms for B and C display large thermal parameters, suggesting a displacement from their ideal centrosymmetric location; (e) the apical Cu(1)-O(4) bond lengthens upon substitution of Co in samples B and C but undergoes shortening upon substitution of Ca in the case of samples D and E. The apical Cu(2)-O(4) bond, on the other hand, shows just the opposite trend; (f) samples D and E show a reduction in the separation of CuO2 layers and their oxygen content; and (e) the bond valence of the Cu(2) ion shows the lowest value of 2.127 for the nonsuperconducting sample C.
