Notes: By using a microwave cavity tuned oscillator (MCTO), the relative dielectric constant ε of nonpolar dielectric fluid was measured with high accuracy. The theory of this technique was studied in detail. A new formula for evaluating the uncertainty of the measured ε was derived. From the formula, we have found that MCTO has a locking characteristic and therefore only operates in certain discrete regions. We have also found that a higher resonant frequency f of the MCTO, a longer delay time of the delay line, and a higher quality factor of the cavity Q lead to a higher accuracy of the measurement. When the values of the above parameters are taken properly, the uncertainty measured ε by the MCTO may become as small as an order of 10−5. The ε of saturated liquid nitrogen was measured by this approach and the experimental results agree very well with the values calculated by our formula. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We observed a violation of the normal Raman selection rule in the resonant Raman spectra of interface (IF) phonon modes of the ultrathin (GaAs)4/(AlAs)2 superlattice. Contrary to the prediction of conventional theories, all four IF modes were observed in both (XX) and (XY) geometries. The result can be interpreted as a consequence of the deep penetration of the electron wave function in the GaAs wells into the AlAs barriers and a lack of definite parity of the electron wave function. Furthermore, our result indicates that conventional theory for bulk (thicker) systems may need to be modified and further developed to be applicable to ultrathin systems. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract The theory of structural stability is both an important and a difficult subject, whose main field of application is found in the design of thin wall lightweight structures and shells. It is unavoidable to employ nonlinear model and to use finite element numerical method in order to obtain the critical load under the action of which the instability of structures will occur. Thus, it becomes very important how to simplify such a nonlinear problem that appears in instability analysis. In this paper, an improvement on previous nonlinear buckling analysis is proposed, in which the emphasis is on the shortcut of calculation of pre-buckling fundamental path. The nonlinear equation used to solve the displacement vector is translated into the linear one to solve the load factor by means of the concept of energy conservation. The detailed procedure to calculate the nonlinear buckling load is presented and two simple examples are also shown as the application of suggested method. The theoretical analysing and numerical examples show that the suggested method is valid for predicting the nonlinear critical loads of structures.

Notes: Abstract The present paper treats dynamic instability problems of non-conservative elastic systems. Starting from general equations of motion, the equations of the perturbed motion are derived. The boundedness of the perturbed motions is studied and sufficient conditions for instability and a necessary condition for stability are deduced. These conditions may determine the instability of non-conservative systems and they are expressed in terms of the properties of generalized tangent damping and stiffness matrices of the systems. Thus, they can easily be incorporated with finite element computations of arbitrary structures.

Notes: Abstract A nanosuperconductor was prepared and characterized in the present work. The nanosuperconductor consisted of nanocrystals with superconducting transition temperature, T c, of 88 K. Dimension of the nanocrystals is dozens nm in diameter and hundreds nm in length. The compound of the nanocrystals has a formula of Y4Ba8Cu12O27. The structure of the nanocrystals was found to be an orthorhombic perovskite, and the lattice constants were determined as a = 7.634 Å, b = 7.758 Å, and c = 11.654 Å, respectively.

Notes: Abstract The influence of Sn doping on superconductivity in the Bi-based 2212 phase is studied in this paper. For the samples R–T relations and magnetic hysteresis loops were measured. X-ray powder diffraction analysis was also performed. For Bi1.75Pb0.25Sr2CaCu2.3−x Sn x O y , the experimental results show that by adding the proper amount of Sn the superconductivity of the samples can be improved. As x = 0.15, the critical temperature T c, the critical current density J c, and the magnetic pinning force density F reach a maximum. At T = 11 K, the critical state parameters H c1, H c2, κ, λ, and ξ are calculated and compared with the results reported by other researchers. The experimental results also show that the Sn doping is able to speed up the growth of the 2223 phase. In brief, Sn doping is an effective way of improving the superconductivity in Bi-based superconductors.

Notes: Abstract We present an improved double titration method for high-T c superconductors, in which the major step is adding KSCN as an indicator of the end point after the starch end point. By adding it, a greater amount of Na2S2O3 solution can be added after the starch end point, at least 0.12 ml. We found that adding KSCN can lead to precise measuring results and reduce the experimental error. The oxygen contents of two series of superconductors were determined by this approach. For YBa2Cu3O y , the errors are Δp∼0.003 and Δy∼0.005, which are lower than that of other reports.
