Notes: Latexes based on styrene-glycidyl methacrylate copolymers were prepared by the emulsifier-free dispersion copolymerization technique. The main factors affecting the size and morphology of the latex particles and their distribution are the initiator concentration (K2S2O8), the total ionic strength of the aqueous phase, and the total monomer concentration. The existence of critical values for these variables was demonstrated. In the range in which these factors had values below the critical, the synthesized latex particles were spherical, homogeneous, and in varied sizes, depending on the abovementioned parameters in the range of 220-500 nm. Above the critical values of these variables the latex particles consisted of spherical aggregates of smaller particles. The reactive oxirane groups of the latex particles were modified later by hydrolysis, ammonolysis, reaction with Na2S, or periodic acid oxidation of the hydrolyzed or ammonolyzed forms of the latex particles.

Notes: Two finite element algorithms suitable for long term simulation of geothermal reservoirs are presented. Both methods use a diagonal mass matrix and a Newton iteration scheme. The first scheme solves the 2N unsymmetric algebraic equations resulting from the finite element discretization of the equations governing the flow of heat and mass in porous media by using a banded equation solver. The second method, suitable for problems in which the transmissibility terms are small compared to the accumulation terms, reduces the set of N equations for the Newton corrections to a symmetric system. Comparison with finite difference schemes indicates that the proposed algorithms are competitive with existing methods.

Notes: Motivated by mechanical analysis of cancellous bone, a 3D constitutive law describing the simultaneous flow of rate-independent plasticity and damage is developed in the framework of thermodynamics of irreversible processes with internal variables. Following the hypothesis of standard generalized materials, a free energy and a dissipation potential are postulated and the associated flow rules derived with the tools of convex analysis. On the computational side, the classical implicit projection (or catching up) algorithm used in plasticity is extended to account for the additional flow of damage. Due to the existence of a dissipation potential, linearization of the incremental algorithm provides a symmetric tangent operator. Numerical resolutions of several boundary value problems and a biomechanical application are presented to illustrate the potential of the constitutive model and demonstrate the quadratic convergence of the algorithm.

Notes: Investigations on the Thermal Decomposition of n-Dodecylcyclopentane in the Gas PhaseIn the thermal decomposition of n-dodecylcyclopentane at 670 and 750°C in a laboratory tubular reactor mixtures of hydrogen and 57 and 113 hydrocarbons respectively are formed. The mixtures have been analyzed and identified by capillary gas chromatography and by mass spectrometry. The distribution of the reaction products is used for mechanistic discussions.

Notes: Kinetic Investigations of the Pyrolysis of Mono-n-alkyl-cyclohexanesThe thermal decomposition of cyclohexane and six mono-n-alkylcyclohexanes was studied kinetically in a metallic laboratory tubular reactor at 650 to 850°C and atmospheric pressure.Kinetic parameters were found to be a function of length of the alkylic side chain. A comparison with analogous parameters of n-paraffins and the unsubstituted cyclohexane allowed the conclusion that C—C-scission in the alkylic chain is the initial reaction in pyrolysis of n-alkylcyclohexanes followed by radical attacks to all C—H-bonds of the feed molecules.

Notes: In order to simulate geophysical general circulation processes, to simplify the governing equations of motion, often the vertical momentum equation of the Navier-Stokes equations is replaced by the hydrostatic approximation equation. The resulting equations are reformulated and a variational formulation of the linearized problem is derived. Iteration schemes are presented to solve this problem. A finite element method is discussed, as well as a finite difference method which is based on a grid that is often used in geophysical general circulation models. The schemes are extended to the non-linear case. Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the performance of the derived iteration schemes.

Notes: The reversible isomerization of poly(chloromethylthiirane) and poly(3-chlorothietane) represents a new kind of polymer reaction and a new method of copolymer synthesis. In chloroform, in dichloromethane, or in nitrobenzene the reaction is well described by reversible first-order kinetics. A rate increase of ca. 40% on changing the solvent from chloroform to nitrobenzene is consistent with an isomerization mechanism that involves a rate-determining attack of the backbone sulfur atom on the neighboring carbon-chlorine bond and rapid ring-opening of the thiiranium ion intermediate by chloride ion.

Notes: Complexes of acrylamide, methacrylamide, and their homologs with zinc, cadmium, and mercury halides were prepared by various methods. Molecular compositions, the nature of the coordination, and some physicochemical properties (melting points and initial decomposition temperatures) were determined. The effect of the chemical structure of particular monomers, metal ion, and halide on the possibility of complex formation and on the properties of the complex compounds were observed. Most of these complexes have not been described in the scientific literature.

Notes: Radiation-induced solid-state polymerizations of complexes of N-tert-butylacrylamide, N-tert-amylacrylamide, and N-tert-hexylacrylamide with zinc chloride and zinc bromide have been studied. An accelerating effect of temperature and an inhibiting effect of oxygen on the polymerization process were observed. The activation energies have been established. The influence of monomer structure as well as the halide used on the polymerization rate have been discussed and some regularities have been pointed out. The polymers obtained show good solubilities in common solvents, which proves that they are not crosslinked.

Notes: A HPLC method is described for the chiral analysis of the commercially available Jacobsen's catalyst. A hydroxypropyl β-cyclodextrin stationary phase was used in conjunction with a nonaqueous, polar-organic mobile phase. The method can be applied to control the enantiomeric purity of the catalyst, which is of great importance for quality control of that product. High accuracy in the determination of trace levels of the unwanted enantiomer in the presence of large amounts of the desired enantiomer is demonstrated.
