    Notes: Research has indicated that employees who remain within an organization after significant downsizing or delayering will experience adverse effects as profoundly as those who have left. This phenomenon has been labelled the "survivor syndrome". This article first of all examines data from an employee opinion survey in a large UK financial institution following sequential and significant restructuring. The empirical findings contradict some propositions suggested in former studies in that evidence of "survivor syndrome" was not apparent. Second, the article explores possible reasons for the non-existence of the syndrome. The findings are discussed in the light of the process of the redundancy programme.

    Notes: Interpersonal networks and quality of women and men's close work friendships in three work settings were investigated to assess potential impact of gender socialization and organizational structure factors on patterns of interaction within same-sex and opposite-sex work friendships, and to examine whether friendship quality would predict salary and job satisfaction and if this would differ as a function of the sex of the employee or the friend. Findings indicate that homophilous ties are stronger than opposite sex ties, which support previous research on relationships in the work environment. Work context influenced the nature of relationships among women and men. In contrast to research on friendships outside the workplace, work friendships involving women were not consistently rated as more satisfying and ratings varied across work settings. Quality of close male friendships was more associated with career success and job satisfaction than quality of close female friendships.

    Notes: Considers the architecture and production of everyday life and its positive outcomes, as well as ways of disrupting it, resulting in the loss of these outcomes. Indirectly, such disruption might be brought about by the possible effects of the huge, interacting global changes (in the fields of macro-economics, technology, culture and politics) on our organisations. These changes force organisations to change themselves too, in order to survive. Some of these forms of adaptation are discussed. Looking at their consequences on the everyday life of their employees, the article roughly distinguishes two kinds of consequences. The article indicates a number of possible sources of stress, and some approaches and interventions that may mitigate their possible harmful effects. Moreover, it concludes that such interventions can have more general positive effects for the organisation, because stress-related complaints can be indicators of underlying factors that may negatively affect other organisational goals as well.

    Notes: This article addresses the rationales employed for the introduction of employee assistance or advisory programmes (EAPs) in UK organisations. It examines typological conceptions of rationales for the introduction of EAPs which are appraised in relation to a study of the introduction of UK based EAP programmes and the literature on organisational interventions. The article concludes that more support is offered for organisational change as a rationale for EAP introduction than for more humanistic considerations, which appear to be better related to managers' work roles. An extended discussion examines the residual role that welfare seems to play in modern HRM strategies and how current explanations of EAP programmes based on counselling models would benefit from input from models of consultancy processes.

    Notes: This paper explores the multifaceted nature of commitment in three industrial firms in Jordan. Furthermore, the study investigates the nature of organizational commitment using employees' job performance and five demographic variables. The results confirm that organizational commitment is a three-dimensional concept. The findings also uncover positive relationships between the global form of commitment and its three components on one hand, and job performance on the other hand. Moreover, organizational commitment and its three dimensions present positive and negative relationships with age, sex, education, job status, and organizational tenure variables. Implications for our understanding of the role of organizational commitment in the Middle East are also discussed.

    Notes: Redundancy, delayering and other forms of organizational change have become increasingly prevalent over the last ten years. This paper is based on a five year UMIST-Institute of Management research programme which has been used to explore the impact of redundancy on UK managers' sense of loyalty, motivation, morale and loyalty to the organization. The paper reveals that redundancy is a particularly damaging form of organizational change even on the survivors of redundancy. The research reveals that where redundancy has been used as a means of change surviving managers' perceptions of their organizations are significantly more adversely affected than where change is enacted without the use of delayering or redundancy. The research raises significant questions about how change is managed in organizations.

    Notes: Examines the Japanese management philosophy in organizations, and develops a 15-item, four-factor (family orientation and loyalty, open communication, team approach, and manager knowledge) Japanese organizational culture scale (JOCS). Investigates the differences in JOCS and other work-related variables between 156 non-unionized employees of one Japanese-owned automobile plant and 144 unionized employees of one US-owned automobile plant in the USA. There were no differences in income and education. Employees in the Japanese-owned plant had higher scores for family orientation and loyalty, open communication, team approach, manager knowledge, organizational commitment, organization-based self-esteem, organizational instrumentality, intrinsic satisfaction, and extrinsic satisfaction than those in the US-owned plant. Results are discussed in light of organizational culture and enhancing quality and productivity in the global competitive market.

    Notes: Examines how humor is related to alternative conflict resolution strategies. It also seeks to advance understanding further by examining how respondents' group membership (race and gender) and demographic similarity with the conflict party influence the use of humor. Significant main effects and interactions were found. In short, the results suggest that humor is related to different types of conflict management strategies and that diversity factors tend to moderate this relationship.

    Notes: The practice of tele- or home-working, has been adopted by an increasing number of companies and workers in response to the changing economic and social needs that characterise the world of work today. Working from home brings new challenges as well as benefits, and a variety of studies have examined the impact of tele-working in terms of such benefits and costs. Few studies, however, have focused on the emotional impact that working away from the office may have on workers as they cope with new technologies, reduced support, increased social isolation and other changes. This neglect of the feelings of workers reflects a somewhat wider neglect in the arena of emotion at work in general. The present study aims to redress this balance through a qualitative pilot study that examines the changing emotions that tele-workers experience. The implications of the study for tele-workers and managers are outlined.

    Notes: Using a pre-test-post-test control group experimental research design, this paper seeks to examine the effects of the 20-week structure of intellect (SOI) training programme on the critical thinking skills of a group of participants in a manufacturing facility in Ireland as measured by both Watson-Glaser critical thinking skills assessment (CTSA) and Raven's standard progressive matrices (SPM). The results demonstrate no statistically significant difference in the experimental group pre- and post-test scores on the Watson-Glaser CTSA, but the results derived from the administration of Raven's SPM were significant (p = 0.003). As expected, no statistically significant difference was found between the pre- and post-test performance of the control group on either test. A number of possible reasons for the results are advanced.
