    Description: The abundance, distribution and structure of the zooplankton community in southern Patagonia (SW Atlantic Ocean) were studied during late summer (March-April 2000) from samples obtained with Nackthai (390 ~km) and Multinet (150 ~km) samplers. Total concentrations of zooplankton biomass, integrated in the water column, ranged between 1.0 and 14.5 g m-2 (dry weight) and reached the highest values in the mid and outer shelf off Bahía Grande (Santa Cruz Prov., Argentina) (51~'S). The 〈 5 mm size fraction, composed mainly of copepods represented, on average, 45% of the total; amphipods and euphausiids accounted for 20% and 31%, respectively. Amphipods were, almost exclusively, Themisto gaudichaudii and euphausiids most abundant species Euphausia lucens and Thysanoessa gregaria. Drepanopus forcipatus, Calanus australis and Oithona spp. constituted the dominant copepods with high abundance of the first in the whole area that represented, on average, 85% of the total mesozooplankton. The maximum abundances of Drepanopus forcipatus, recorded in outer waters of Bahía Grande, showed a noticeable decrease towards the inner area and to the north of the bay. C. australis and Oithona spp. concentrations, although much lower, distributed more homogeneously within the whole study area. The distribution of the different populations in the water column varied according to the species: D. forcipatus and Oithona spp. concentrated mainly in the upper layers down to ca. 50 m; C. australis was found between that depth and near the bottom. Copepods populations were dominated by late copepodids.

    Description: In principle, measurements of high-frequency acoustic scattering from oceanic microstructure and zooplankton across a broad range of frequencies can reduce the ambiguities typically associated with the interpretation of acoustic scattering at a single frequency or a limited number of discrete narrowband frequencies. With this motivation, a high-frequency broadband scattering system has been developed for investigating zooplankton and microstructure, involving custom modifications of a commercially available system, with almost complete acoustic coverage spanning the frequency range 150–600 kHz. This frequency range spans the Rayleigh-to-geometric scattering transition for some zooplankton, as well as the diffusive roll-off in the spectrum for scattering from turbulent temperature microstructure. The system has been used to measure scattering from zooplankton and microstructure in regions of non-linear internal waves. The broadband capabilities of the system provide a continuous frequency response of the scattering over a wide frequency band, and improved range resolution and signal-to-noise ratios through pulse-compression signal-processing techniques. System specifications and calibration procedures are outlined and the system performance is assessed. The results point to the utility of high-frequency broadband scattering techniques in the detection, classification, and under certain circumstances, quantification of zooplankton and microstructure.

    Description: In order to determine the distribution patterns of phytoplanktonic and zooplanktonic species that constitute the main food of the argentine anchovy (Engraulis anchoita), a study was made within a coastal spawning area on meso-scaled space (approximately 7 miles between stations). It was observed the predominacne of the copepod Oithona helgolandica and copepodites stages of other small-sized species, thus inferring the preponderance of nauplii stages which constitute the main food of early anchovy larvae. A high spatial heterogeneity was found in the distrtibution of both phytoplanktonic and zooplanktonic communities. Phytoplankton showed a patchiness distribution both in horizontal and vertical directions. Diatoms, dinoflagellates and coccolithophoirids showed their own distribution patterns with biomass nuclei centered at different stations. The spatial distribution of the components within each taxonomic group seems to be of the contagious-type distribution. The positive correlation (r= 0,64*)as observed between immature stages of copepods and coccolithophorids seems to indicate a trophic direction of these consumers, which is also supported by the finding of coccolithophorids in copepods pellets. The phytoplankton crop as measured by population census and chlorophyll a concentrations (0,0-0,91 mg/m3)indicates an area of a low productive capacity.

    Description: A study was made on numercial and biomass variations of the zooplankton of the San Jorge Gulf (Argentina), based on samples from five cruises performed during 1985. The sampling was included within a proagramme for the biology and fishery evaluation of the shrimp Pleoticus muelleri. San Jorge, a large gulf of the northern patagonian shelf, comprises major fishery activities. Some fish species of economical importance depend on copepods for their feeding, like anchovy (Engraulis anchoita)or partially on middle-size plankters, like mackerel (Scomber japonicus). As a way for determining the trophic disponibility at the gulf, a study was made in order to express the numerical abundance of copepods, euphausiids and amphipods and other items of lesser importance, as well as their total biomass.
