Description: The present work is about biometry study, population structure and habitat Penaeus vannamei, Boone shrimp cultivated in ponds 939 shrimps were analised from March-July 1991 at a shrimp farm located in Hebano-Manabí port. The analysis demostrated that a strong difference exists between the male and female shrimp product of morphological diformis in this species. Also, the calculated correlation coeficient values were always near the unit indicated for us that the relations between the different averages were very narrow. The proportion of the sexes showed a clear predominance of the females over the males. The proportions being 60%/40% respectively. Aside from this, this population distribution remained steady during the period of the investigation. The study about the habitat demostrated that the physical parameters were kept in the following optimun rages: oxigen 4,4 ml/l, water temperature 26,86°C, salinity 24,20 ppt, pH 7,18 and turbidity 0,37 m.

Description: The document presents results from the pelagic acoustic research survey, executed at the East zone of the Galápagos Islands, between April and May 1995. A total of ca., 15 500 km² was covered. The following species were identified in the catch: mackarel (Scomber japonicus), south sardine (Sardinops sagax), mictophids (Lampanyctus spp.), and small specimens of giant squid (Dosidicus gigas). Mean legth and weight for mackarel and south sardine were 26,3 cm FL/0,251 kg and 18,6 cm TL/0,051 kg respectively. The estimated density for small pelagic fish of comercial interest (mackarel and sardine) was of 10,5 km². The estimated biomass for mackarel was ca., 125 000 t whereas for sardine was ca., 36 000 t. The current results coincide with those of March-April 1991 and also de catch composition is very similar to the one obtained in April 1998 and December 1994. In conclusion: it exists a small pelagic fish stock for commercial fisheries in the zone; the diferent densities from the current and the december 1994 results (estimated fish density: ca, 4 t km²), suggest a biomass and distribution stational variation, associated to the oceanic dynamism seen in the zone.

Description: A research survey was carried out in the southeast of the San Cristóbal island of the Galápagos Province (Galápagos Islands, Ecuador), between the 6th and 23th of december 1994; a 9 637 km2 was covered, from ca., 100 m depth waters. The Simrad EK-500 (38 kHz) acoustic equipment was used on board the I/V Tohallí of the National Fisheries Institute. The catch was compounded of 98% of makarell (Scomber japonicus) and 2% of south sardine (Sadinops sagax). The estimated results for biological and acoustic parameters for S. sagax were: sex ratio (male and female): 36% y 64%; furcal length range: 21-32 cm; mean legth: 26,6 cm; mean weith: 0,254 kg; theoreticals target strength and weight target strength (TS, TSkg): -38,9 dB and -33,0 dB. Mictofid catches were not obtained even though their ecotraces appeared in the echograms. The estimated small pelagic fish density (mainly compounded by makarell) was ca., 2,2 t km-2, the mackarell school fish´s biomass was estimated in previous years (1988, 1991); unfavorably enviroment conditions might have affected the distribution of resources (there exists superficial termic anomalies up to 3~'C: even though there might exist seasonal variations in the resources abundance.

Description: 153 experimental sets were made with stackable Antillean fish traps in depths of 5 to 30 m in the waters around the Galápagos Island (Ecuador), between Octobre and April 1983. 1,885 fish were caught of 18 species mainly of the families Pomadasyidae, Acanthuridae, Sparidae and Serranidae. The mean catch rate was 5,5 Kg per lift or 0,4 Kg.h-1, and the mean weight of the fish caught was 0,45 Kg. The optimum set duration was found to be between 2 and 18 hours (possibly indicating a high rate of escape). This study took place during the period of the ”El Niño”, when catches of fish in this area generally were low, and it is not known what effect this had. The catches were good compared with other shallow areas, but the fishes caught were mainly of medium quality. It is thought that significant increases in the quantity and quality of the catch could be obtained with commercial traps in deeper areas, but the efficient use of these would require new vessels and equipment, and the resulting increase in fishing effort could lead to overfishing of the most acceptable species of reef fish. Hence the development of fishery using fish traps is not recommended for Galápagos. A study of the biology of the fish caught was carried out. A bibliography of references on fish traps and their use was compiled and is included.
