Description: The occurrence of gurnard Prionotus stephanophrys was studied in the course of a series of fisheries research cruises on the Ecuadorian continental shelf between 1980 and 1985. The species is common in coastal waters south of 1°S . Its abundance is very variable, possibly associated with sea temperatures. Normally densities are between 0.8 and 1.6 t.km-2. The standing stock varies between 13,000 and 150,000 t wich it is estimated can sustain catches of around 4,000 t pet year, and up to 40,000 t in times of great abundance. P. stephanophyrs is found in large shoals on the bottom during the day but a night moves up into mid-water to feed on euphausids. The fish caught had size range of 12 cm to 37 cm, but the majority were between 16 cm and 21 cm in total length. The growth parameters and natural mortality were calculated. The present fisheries catch large quantities of these gurnards, but most is discarded at sea and the small amounts landed are only used for fish meal production. However, the flesh is of good quality and could easily be used for human consumption.

Description: A study was carried out the white fish landings made by the artisanal fisheries in mainland Ecuador in 1982. There were four main groups of landings: the fishery for large pelagic fish, the demersal longline fishery on hard grounds; the set net fisheries for corvina and other medium and large bottom fish and the landings of shrimp by-catch. The fishes caught and their nomenclature; the gears used, the vessels and the fishing communities are briefly described. The landings of with fish by these fisheries in 1082 are given and discussed. The total landings were between 15.000 t and 20.000 t. Of this about 40% was large pelagic fish; 20-30% shrimp by-catch, 20% good quality demersal fish and 10% shark. It should be possible to increase the landings in some categories, but feasibility studies would be needed any development could be recommended and at present the fishermen are not receiving a good return for their efforts.

Description: 153 experimental sets were made with stackable Antillean fish traps in depths of 5 to 30 m in the waters around the Galápagos Island (Ecuador), between Octobre and April 1983. 1,885 fish were caught of 18 species mainly of the families Pomadasyidae, Acanthuridae, Sparidae and Serranidae. The mean catch rate was 5,5 Kg per lift or 0,4 Kg.h-1, and the mean weight of the fish caught was 0,45 Kg. The optimum set duration was found to be between 2 and 18 hours (possibly indicating a high rate of escape). This study took place during the period of the ”El Niño”, when catches of fish in this area generally were low, and it is not known what effect this had. The catches were good compared with other shallow areas, but the fishes caught were mainly of medium quality. It is thought that significant increases in the quantity and quality of the catch could be obtained with commercial traps in deeper areas, but the efficient use of these would require new vessels and equipment, and the resulting increase in fishing effort could lead to overfishing of the most acceptable species of reef fish. Hence the development of fishery using fish traps is not recommended for Galápagos. A study of the biology of the fish caught was carried out. A bibliography of references on fish traps and their use was compiled and is included.

Description: The present work is a study of the fishery of Panulirus gracilis (Green spiny lobster) in the ports of Chanduy, El Real and Anconcito in the north east of the Gulf of Guayaquil 58, 252 specimens caught in the 10 year period 1970 to 1979 were examined. A comparison was made of the sizes of lobsters caught with the established regulation for the explotation of the crustaceans. It was found that both the monthly and annual mean sizes were maintained above the ”minimum permitted length” which is 25 cm total length. Males predominated over females in the ratio 2:1. The percentage of males was 66,5% and of females 33,5%. During the period of the study, berried females of various sizes were frequently found, being most abundant in the months of May, June and July which corresponds to the period of greatest sexual activity. Although regulations exist, there have been significant catches of males and berried females below the permitted size in some years. Should this continue it may cause adverse effects on the survival of the species. It has been established that there is a sexual dimorphism, with females being slighthy larger than the males, this may be due to accelerated growth. It is hoped that it will be possible to establish a cephalothorax size corresponding to the 25 cm total length and the possibility of permitting the catching of berried females over this length with the aim of exercising better and more efficient control over the fishery.
