Description: Coral reefs are very sensitive to the increment in nitrogen concentrations and phosphorus, since these compounds propitiate the macroalgae growth, resulting in the degradation of coral reefs. With the purpose of assessing the degree of nutriphication of the coral reefs in Los Canarreos Archipelago, located in the periphery of the Gulf of Batabanó, and those located in the outer area of Sabana-Camagüey Archipelago (SCA), three samplings were executed in the reefs of Los Canarreos Archipelago (August 1999, March 2000 and August 2000). In SCA, samplings were done in May 2002 and August 2003. The parameters evaluated were nitrates + nitrite, ammonium, total nitrogen, inorganic phosphorus and total phosphorus. The nutrient contents in the reefs located in the outer border of the Gulf of Batabanó are much higher than those in the Sabana-Camagüey Archipelago, and to the threshold established by Lapointe et al (1992) for inorganic nitrogen (〉1,0 μM/L) and inorganic phosphorus (〉0,1 μM/L), so that the eutrophication processes are developed in coral reef ecosystems. The causes for the higher content of these compounds in the reefs of Los Canarreos Archipelago are related to a high anthropic activity in the Gulf of Batabanó, and also a possibly higher exchange rate of biogenic compounds between the gulf and the adjacent sea than among the different water bodies that conform the SCA and the ocean.

Description: The anthropogenic affectation was evaluated on the coast N of the Gulf of Batabanó in May 2003 (corresponding to the provinces of Matanzas and Havana), in areas located in the line of the coast. The results were compared with the historical information of the sector. In the coast N and the Ensenada of the Broa, the parameters oxygen saturation, DBO5 and DQO showed characteristic high values of eutrofication. The biggest contribution in the Cianoficies was in the near coastal areas to sources of organic contamination. In the case of the nutrients they show specific data of mesothrofic waters with tendency to the eutrofization and the silts presented a high affectation for toxic metals. The area near to Guanímar is distinguished to present conditions of organic contamination that favor heterothrofic conditions, corroborated by a prevalence of the processes of mineralization of the organic matter over primary production and lows values of fitoplankton concentration. On the contrary, in the region of Surgidero of Batabanó, the processes of synthesis of organic matter prevail suggested by a high primary production, and concentration of fitoplankton, with low breathing levels and mineralization of the organic matter, that indicates that the system is behaving autothrofically. In a general way, this sector is very affected by the anthropogenic impact. The information obtained is of great importance for the development of the fishing and tourist industries in the area.

Description: The Almendares River constitutes the most important superficial stream in Cuban capital, that finishes in the Metropolitan Park of Havana, which is an entertaining centre. The objective of this work is to determine the presence of toxic inorganic pollutants in the Almendares River water. 10 samplings were carried out from June 2003 to May 2004 in 14 stations established along the last 10 km of the river and 3 tributaries. The quantification of nitrates, nitrites and ammonium was done by spectrophotometric methods The concentration of heavy metals in the dissolved and particulate phase was determined by atomic emission spectrometry. The total microbial charge was determined by epifluorescency. Were found high levels of ammonium and nitrites, as well as high values of Cd, Co, Ni and Pb. The total microbial charge were high in the 14 stations in spite of the presence of toxic metals.

Description: This report intend to know, if BOD5 of fishing industry waste waters, follows a similar and proportional behavior to different temperatures and from incubation times, where the oxidative processes of organic matter are experimentally developed and to obtain a mathematical equation that allows us to know the job stream necessary, when diminishing the experimental time, if we accelerated the processes by means of thermal increases; besides to determine which of the propose methodologies in the bibliography, is the one that explains better the phenomenon of the BOD completes and the deoxygenating constant, important parameters to design any type of system of treatment to the liquid waste waters of the fishing industry. Finding this relation, will be able to be diminished the working time and increase the number of analysis to make, which helped to obtain evaluations of the environmental quality in short periods of time, besides to represent a rationalization of the analytical working time.

Description: This study presents some results of monitoring the beaches at East of Havana City, Cuba, during February and August corresponding to the rainy and less rainy seasons, respectively. For the bacteriological analysis were carried out 5 samplings in a period of 30 days, the rest of the samples was collected as punctual samples. The results are compared with those obtained in other samplings, specifically with 2004 period and with the requirements in the Cuban Standard NC: 22, (1999). Practically, the whole area showed pollution indicators deteriorated, such as: the permanganate oxidability value, bacteriological indicators and hydrocarbons, the last one corresponds to a lightly polluted area by hydrocarbons. The most affected areas were the outlet of the rivers Guanabo and Itabo and the lagoon with the same name, which is not beneficed by the circulation régime and are occasionally affected by waste waters disposal. The comparison with previous years indicate as general way a maintenance or increment in the organic matter, nutrients and dissolved and dispersed hydrocarbons, as well as a slight increase in the coliforms and fecal streptococcus concentrations Rincón de Guanabo area, considered as a protected area by the environmental authorities in Cuba was reported as a lightly contaminated area.

Description: The present paper involves their results in the pollutant contributions to the aquatic ecosystems according to the products processed in different productive facilities of the Cuba Island, and concerning to the most significant fishing resources as lobster, white shrimp, tuna, shark, snapper, mackerel, jack and bill fish. The polluting loads in 12 years (between 1955 and 1999) respond to the indicators BOD, QOD, TP, TNK and N-NH4. The captures for those years were approximately between 3 950 and 23 970 tons, with fluctuations of BOD loads between 56 and 342 tons and of DQO between 111 and 676 tons. The principal nutrients contribution was the nitrogen, followed by the phosphorous and finally the ammonium, representing a total contribution of 136,3; 52,7 and 18,0 tons respectively in those 12 years. For the purification of this pollutant concurrence is necessary 600 tons of oxygen that is in correspondence with a contribution of 100 x 106 m3 of seawater, insinuating the impracticable of a natural purification process. The report culminates with the possible affectations caused by discharges of polluted waters on the ecosystems, recommending the use of the information offered in this document, with the objective to elaborate the future plans that allow to establish environmental programs, as well as to estimate the treatment system effectiveness operation, required to implement in the Cuban fishing industry.

Description: Due to the necessity to protect the surrounding environment and very specially the inner and coastal waters, were studied different wastewaters systems for their application in facilities without treatment plants. In the very special case of the fishing industry, where only 14 establishments (from 42 active up to the moment) have treatment system, one requires of the study of different alternatives that contribute with the diminishing of the polluting load until permissible values. By such reasons, in addition to the study that was doing to explore and propose a treatment system by high rate pond with the microalgae Chlorella spp., empirical and kinetic equations were calculated using biochemical oxygen demand values, with the objective to facilitate the prediction of the system efficiency, as well as its design. For the calculation of the empirical equations, the applied and removed organic superficial loads and the applied and removed organic volumetric loads were taking into consideration. On the other hand, it was verified that the first order equation for a batch system adjusts to the purifying process that took place into the system, with the average value for the kinetic constant of the process of 0,47 d -1. The results obtained in this study demonstrate the possibilities having the high rate ponds for the wastewater treatment of the Cuban fishing industry and the knowledge of some design parameters.

Description: The structure of meiofaunal communities was surveyed in 17 stations in Nipe Bay, Cuba in July, 2001. Levels of Nickel (all stations) are higher than in several bays in Cuba, probably due to natural causes. The levels of Copper, Zinc, Fe and Manganese indicate a relative low pollution, likely related to the presence of urban settlements. There is decrease in the total density and number of taxa of meiofauna in the stations with higher levels of metals; the copepods appear to be particularly sensitivity to metal pollution. The stations located at the mouth of the bay have the lowest levels of contamination and the highest total density of organisms and taxa richness, probably due to a more intense turnover of the waters in this area and consequent lower accumulation of pollutants in the sediments. The more inner stations exhibit higher levels of contamination and possess community structures characterized by low richness of taxa and reduced density of meiofauna.
