Description: Coral reefs are very sensitive to the increment in nitrogen concentrations and phosphorus, since these compounds propitiate the macroalgae growth, resulting in the degradation of coral reefs. With the purpose of assessing the degree of nutriphication of the coral reefs in Los Canarreos Archipelago, located in the periphery of the Gulf of Batabanó, and those located in the outer area of Sabana-Camagüey Archipelago (SCA), three samplings were executed in the reefs of Los Canarreos Archipelago (August 1999, March 2000 and August 2000). In SCA, samplings were done in May 2002 and August 2003. The parameters evaluated were nitrates + nitrite, ammonium, total nitrogen, inorganic phosphorus and total phosphorus. The nutrient contents in the reefs located in the outer border of the Gulf of Batabanó are much higher than those in the Sabana-Camagüey Archipelago, and to the threshold established by Lapointe et al (1992) for inorganic nitrogen (〉1,0 μM/L) and inorganic phosphorus (〉0,1 μM/L), so that the eutrophication processes are developed in coral reef ecosystems. The causes for the higher content of these compounds in the reefs of Los Canarreos Archipelago are related to a high anthropic activity in the Gulf of Batabanó, and also a possibly higher exchange rate of biogenic compounds between the gulf and the adjacent sea than among the different water bodies that conform the SCA and the ocean.

Description: The anthropogenic affectation was evaluated on the coast N of the Gulf of Batabanó in May 2003 (corresponding to the provinces of Matanzas and Havana), in areas located in the line of the coast. The results were compared with the historical information of the sector. In the coast N and the Ensenada of the Broa, the parameters oxygen saturation, DBO5 and DQO showed characteristic high values of eutrofication. The biggest contribution in the Cianoficies was in the near coastal areas to sources of organic contamination. In the case of the nutrients they show specific data of mesothrofic waters with tendency to the eutrofization and the silts presented a high affectation for toxic metals. The area near to Guanímar is distinguished to present conditions of organic contamination that favor heterothrofic conditions, corroborated by a prevalence of the processes of mineralization of the organic matter over primary production and lows values of fitoplankton concentration. On the contrary, in the region of Surgidero of Batabanó, the processes of synthesis of organic matter prevail suggested by a high primary production, and concentration of fitoplankton, with low breathing levels and mineralization of the organic matter, that indicates that the system is behaving autothrofically. In a general way, this sector is very affected by the anthropogenic impact. The information obtained is of great importance for the development of the fishing and tourist industries in the area.

Description: This work presents a diagnosis on the environmental quality of El Doctor coastal lagoon starting from the main physicochemical and microbiological variables indicators of organic pollution, its trophic and hygienic-sanitary state. Three sampling cruises were carried out in February 2006, and May and October 2007. This lagoon shows a high degree of organic pollution; the concentrations of organic matter, nutrients, as well as total and fecal coliforms, and fecal streptococcus are above Cuban water quality standard for fishing and recreational uses (NC: 22-99, NC: 25- 99). The main cause of the lagoon’s pollution state is due to crude wastes originated by Los Cocos community, whose estimated volume is 1 000 m3/day with a polluting load of 250 Kg./day. The application of a biogeochemical model for water quality indicated that the lagoon can only self-depurate around 20 % of the organic load it receives. According to the simulation, the efficiency of the biochemical waste treatment system must be higher than 80 % to allow the existence of life in the lagoon. The use of extensive waste treatment systems is recommended, such as facultative stabilization lagoons or constructed wetlands.

Description: Between 2001 and 2005, the dissolved oxygen and organic matter contents in the aquous phase were evaluated in the bays of Cárdenas, Santa Clara, Puerto de Sagua la Grande, San Juan de los Remedios, Buena Vista, Los Perros, Jigüey and La Gloria. In Puerto de Sagua la Grande and the coastal zone of Buena Vista Bay, dissolved oxygen concentrations lower than the saturation value were registered in the rainy season. There was a predominance of organic matter quantities expressed in terms of Biochemical Oxigen Demand (BOD5) between 1.0 -2,0 mgO2/L, typical of marine water of doubtful quality for fishing use, according to the NC-25:99. The most common concentrations of the Chemical Oxigen Demand (COD) to permanganate in alkaline medium were higher than 2.0 mgO2/L, indicating that there is a tendency to water pollution by organic matter. In Santa Clara, Los Perros, Jigüey and La Gloria bays, organic matter is fundamentally of autochthonous origin. The remaining bays receive considerable amounts of wastewaters with little or no treatment, that enrich these water bodies with organic matter.

Description: The evaluation of the possible environmental changes due to the anthropic impacts that have happened in the last years in this scenario and the redefinition of areas that suffer affectations were carried up. Any environmental alteration of this ecosystem, either of natural or human origin, can have an important economic and social repercussion. According to the proposed chemical and biological indexes, the waters of the Gulf of Batabanó presented mesotrophic conditions with tendency to the eutrofization in four fundamental areas. In the silts of the Gulf the values of organic carbon and sulphidric acid were characteristic of sediments with high concentrations of organic matter. In the coastal sector N, was determinate high concentrations of sulphidric acid and heavy metals, which indicates elevated levels of antrophic affectation. The waters of the reefs of the Gulf showed mesotrophic conditions, while the silts were considered little affected, according to the chemical and biological indexes proposed in this work.

Description: The Gulf of Guacanayabo was studied in 1990 and 1991. The Gulf of Batabanó was evaluated from 1998 to 2003, and Sabana-Camagüey Archipelago was investigated in the stage 2001-2005. The objective of these researches was to evaluate nitrogen and phosphorus contents in these three regions of Cuban marine shelf and to establish the relations existing between both nutrients. The gulfs of Guacanayabo and Batabanó have a greater nitrogen and phosphorus potential than Sabana-Camagüey coastal ecosystem, due to the lesser development of the fluvial network in this ecosystem; although in the three regions the concentrations of these compounds receive a marked anthropogenic influence. The total nitrogen-total phosphorus ratio, N.T./P.T., showed a tendency to decrease in regions with seagrass cover, attributed to the amounts of phosphorus that this biotope contributes to the water matrix, although the predominant values were those in which none of the nutrients is restrictive, and unlike the total inorganic nitrogen-inorganic phosphorus ratio, NTI/P, it does not have a well-defined pattern in the different climatic periods.
