Description: The complex magnetic and gravity anomaly fields of the Southern Tyrrhenian Sea provide a record of the complicated properties and evolution of the underlying crust. Geologic interpretation of these anomalies is hindered by the effects of anomaly superposition and source ambiguity inherent to potential field analysis. A common approach to minimizing interpretational ambiguities is to consider analyses of anomaly correlations. Spectral correlation filters are used to separate positively and negatively correlated anomaly features based on the correlation coefficient given by the cosine of the phase difference between common wavenumber components. This procedure is applied to reduced-to-pole magnetic and first vertical derivative gravity anomalies for mapping correlative crustal magnetization and density contrasts. Adding and subtracting the standardized outputs of the filters yield summed (SLFI) and differenced (DLFI) local favorability indices that, respectively highlight positive and negative feature correlations in the anomaly data sets. Correlative maxima mainly reflect volcanic structures, and secondarily intrusive bodies and pre- Tortonian carbonates of the Maghrebian chain and the basement rocks of the Sardinia eastern margin. Correlative minima mostly mark sediment-filled peri-Tyrrhenian structural basins related to the Pliocene extensional tectonics, and intra-slope marine depressions related to post-Pliocene and still-active compressional tectonics off Northern Sicily. Prominent inverse anomaly correlations mainly reflect crustal features around the southern margin of the Tyrrhenian Sea that include higher density, lower magnetization pelagic-to-terrigenous and flysch-type nappes of the Sicilian-Maghrebian chain, as well as lower density, higher magnetization sediments filling depressions of the chain, and syn-rift sediments of Southeastern Sardinia.

Notes: Summary A member of the young PV Alu sub-family is detected in chimpanzee DNA showing that the PV subfamily is not specific to human DNA. This particular Alu is absent from the orthologous loci in both human and gorilla DNAs, indicating that PV subfamily members transposed within the chimpanzee lineage following the divergence of chimpanzee from both gorilla and human. These findings and previous reports describing the transpositional activity of other Alu sequences within the human, gorilla, and chimpanzee lineages provide phylogenetic evidence for the existence of multiple Alu source genes. Sequences surrounding this particular Alu resemble known transcriptional control elements associated with RNA polymerase III, suggesting a mechanism by which cis-acting elements might be acquired upon retrotransposition.

Notes: Summary A new statistical test has been developed to detect selection on silent sites. This test compares the codon usage within a gene and thus does not require knowledge of which genes are under the greatest selection, that there exist common trends in codon usage across genes, or that genes have the same mutation pattern. It also controls for mutational biases that might be introduced by the adjacent bases. The test was applied to 62 mammalian sequences, the significant codon usage biases were detected in all three species examined (humans, rats, and mice). However, these biases appear not to be the consequence of selection, but of the first base pair in the codon influencing the mutation pattern at the third position.

Notes: Summary The identification of genetically coherent populations is essential for understanding human evolution. Among the culturally uniform ethnic groups of west Africa, there are two geographically distinct populations with high frequencies of sickle-cell hemoglobin (HbS). Although the HbS mutation in each group is found on distinguishable chromosomes 11, these populations have been assumed to be parts of a single population. Analysis of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) in these populations demonstrated that the two populations identified by alternative chromosomes 11 bearing HbS have distinct distributions of mitochondrial genotypes, i.e., they are maternally separate. These studies also showed that, contrary to expectation, the mtDNA of some individuals is heteroplasmic. For nuclear loci, a comparison of the frequency of alternative alleles established that these populations are genetically distinct. Both the mitochondrial and nuclear data indicate that these populations have been separate for approximately 50,000 years. Although HbS in the two populations is usually attributed to recent, independent mutations, the duration of the separation and the observed geographic distribution of the population allow for the possibility of an ancient origin of HbS. Assuming an ancient mutation and considering the known biogeography, we suggest that HbS protected selected populations from malaria in rain forest refuges during the most recent ice age.

Notes: Summary The fatty acid (FA) composition of subcutaneous fat (SCF) was analyzed in 47 German adults. No influences of sex or age on the FA status of the probands could be detected. SCF consisted mainly of monoenoic fatty acids. Linoleic acid was the major polyunsaturated fatty acid. Linoleic acid metabolites were found in small quantities only. In comparison to the results of studies in the USA and the Netherlands the FA composition of SCF in German probands was characterized by lower levels of linoleic acid and higher contents of palmitic acid. The trans-FA content was similar to that in Dutch women, but lower than in American male probands. However, in evaluating the differences in the FA composition of SCF in different countries, it has to be noted that there are wide ranges in the proportions of the major FA in all populations studied.

Notes: Abstract QuarternaryHeusler alloys of composition (Ni1−x Cu x )2MnSn were prepared withx=0–1. They were all single phased with L21 structure. Alloys were investigated by magnetic measurements. For Mn, the only atom carrying a moment in this kind ofHeusler alloys, the usual value (∼4 µB) was found and a corresponding μeff in the paramagnetic region. A shallow minimum of theCurie temperatures can be explained on the basis of di-dl interaction.

Notes: Abstract This assessment focuses on the concentrations of some chemicals present in theAgaricus bisporus mushroom, the cancer-inducing doses of these chemicals or mushroom used in the animal experiments, the total amounts of these chemicals or mushroom needed to induce cancer in these mice, and the estimated total amounts of these chemicals or mushroom needed to induce cancer in humans. By adding the estimated amounts of chemicals needed to induce cancer and by comparing it with the amount of raw mushroom needed to induce the same effect, it becomes obvious that we have accounted for less than 2% of the carcinogenic components of theAgaricus bisporus mushroom. Since some unavailable data handicapped this assessment, it should be regarded as tentative and subject to further adjustment.

Notes: Abstract From our interpretation of the Bouguer gravity and aeromagnetic anomalies in south-east Scotland, we conclude that a massive granite batholith underlies the greater part of the eastern Southern Uplands. The granite model which we computed earlier from gravity anomalies in the Tweeddale area fits the observed magnetic anomalies closely, if a normal magnetization of 0.095 A m−1 is assigned, similar to values found for exposed local granites. Further gravity modelling shows that, apart from the Tweeddale boss, the granite shallows to less than 1 km near Lammer Law in East Lothian and extends north of the Lammermuir Fault. A model for the East Lothian volcanics was computed from their aeromagnetic anomalies, then their gravitational effect was combined with that estimated for the Devonian and Carboniferous sediments and the result stripped off the observed gravity field. The residual gravity anomalies were used to generate a two-dimensional model for the granite north of the Lammermuir Fault. The expected tectonic consequences of a massive granite batholith in the eastern Southern Uplands are compared with the known development of faults and sedimentary basins around its margins.

Notes: Abstract Data obtained from the literature on the annual pattern of human conceptions and plasma melatonin at high latitudes indicated that simple annual rhythms do not exist. Instead, prominent semiannual rhythms are found, with equinoctial troughs and solsticial peaks. A prominent semiannual environmental event is the magnetic disturbance induced by the solar wind. The semiannual magnetic disturbances are worldwide, but most pronounced in the auroral zones where the corpuscular radiation enters the atmosphere. Magnetic indices that predominantly reflect these events were obtained from the literature and correlated with the melatonin and conception data. Significant and inverse correlations were found for Inuit conceptions and the melatonin data. The correlations obtained for 48 contiguous states of the United States indicated that only the extreme northern states exhibited this relationship. These data were compared with a previous correlational study in the United States which established that sunshine was correlated with conceptions in the middle latitude and southern states. An hypothesis of dual control by electromagnetic and magnetic energies is proposed: melatonin is a progonadal hormone in humans controlled by both factors, depending on their relative strength. Other studies are reviewed regarding the possible factors involved in determining the annual pattern of human conceptions. Demographic studies of geographic variation in temporal patterns of conceptions, with particular regard to variations of the magnetic fields on the earth's surface, may provide some insight into the efficacy of these different factors.

Notes: Abstract We hypothesized that the viscoelastic properties of the respiratory system should have significant implications for the energetically optimal frequency of breathing, in view of the fact that these properties cause marked dependencies of overall system resistance and elastance on frequency. To test our hypothesis we simulated two models of canine and human respiratory system mechanics during sinusoidal breathing and calculated the inspiratory work ( $$\dot W$$ ) and pressure-time integral (PTI) per minute under both resting and exercise conditions. The two models were a two-compartment viscoelastic model and a single-compartment model. Requiring minute alveolar ventilation to be fixed, we found that both models predicted almost identical optimum breathing frequencies. The calculated PTI was very insensitive to increases in breathing frequency above the optimal frequencies, while $$\dot W$$ was found to increase slowly with frequency above its optimum. In contrast, both $$\dot W$$ and PTI increased sharply as frequency decreased below their respective optima. A sensitivity analysis showed that the model predictions were very insensitive to the elastance and resistance values chosen to characterize tissue viscoelasticity. We conclude that the $$\dot W$$ criterion for choosing the frequency of breathing is compatible with observations in nature, whereas the optimal frequency predictions of the PTI are rather too high. Both criteria allow for a fairly wide margin of choice in frequency above the optimum values without incurring excessive additional energy expenditure. Furthermore, contrary to our expectations, the viscoelastic properties of the respiratory system tissues do not pose a noticeable problem to the respiratory controller in terms of energy expenditure.

Notes: K2Fe[P2S6] was synthesized from the elements at 1173 K in sealed quartz tubes. The compound forms transparent orange crystals, stable against air and moisture. K2Fe[P2S6] crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group P21/n (No. 14), with cell dimensions (T = 298.5 K) a = 6.0622(4), b = 12.172(1) and c = 7.3787(8) Å, β = 101.113(7)°, Z = 2. The novel structure type (mP22) is characterized by columns of alternating face-sharing S6 octahedra and trigonal antiprisms (both distorted) parallel to the a axis, which are interconnected by inserted K+ (CN 10; {2,6,2}-polyhedra; d(K—S) = 3.231 - 3.845 Å). The S6 polyhedra of the columns are centered alternately by Fe (d̄(Fe—S) = 2.577 Å) and P2 pairs which are inclined to the a axis by 73.4°. The bond lengths in the hexathiodiphosphate(IV) anions, [P2S6]4-, with approximate 3 2/m - D3d symmetry, are d̄(P—P) = 2.20 and d̄(P—S) = 2.02 Å. The compound is paramagnetic above TN = 28 K with μ = 4.69 B.M. and orders antiferromagnetically below TN. The internal modes of the observed Raman and FIR spectra of K2Fe[P2S6] are in accord with the factor group analysis, and the spectra are assigned on the basis of [P2S6]4- units, taking into account the deviation from D3d symmetry.

Description / Table of Contents: Monomeric and Dimeric Chromium(III) Phthalocyanines: Synthesis and Properties of Hydroxopyridinophthalocyaninatochromium(III) and μ-Oxodi(pyridinophthalocyaninatochromium(III))Heating of „[Cr(OH)Pc2-]“ in pyridine (Py) gives the paramagnetic (T = 273 K) complexes [Cr(OH)(Py)Pc2-] (μCr = 3.84 μB) and [(Cr(Py)Pc2-)2O] (μCr = 1.24 μB) by consecutive substitution and condensation reactions. The UV-VIS spectra are characterized by the typical B, Q, and N regions of the Pc2- ligand being shifted hypsochromically for the dimer with respect to the monomer due to excitonic coupling (1.5 kK). Regions of weak absorbance between 8 and 13 resp. 19 kK are assigned to trip-quartet transitions for both complexes. A weak band at 870 cm-1 in the FIR/MIR spectra is assigned to vas(Cr—O—Cr). In the resonance Raman(RR) spectra v(Cr—O) at 514 cm-1 resp. vs(Cr—O—Cr) at 426 cm-1 is selectively enhanced. Further strong RR-lines of the μ-Oxo dimer at 110 and 631 cm-1 are assigned to a (Py—Cr—O)- resp. internal pyridine deformation of a1g symmetry. An assignment as 2vas(Cr—O—Cr) is proposed for the remarkable RR line at 1740 cm-1.

Description / Table of Contents: Synthesis, Crystal Structure and Magnetism of Sodium Tetrachlorotitanate(II), Na2TiCl4Na2TiCl4 is obtained as single crystals by metallothermic reduction of TiCl3 with sodium (525°C, 90 d, Ta container). Pure powder samples may be prepared by synproportionation of TiCl3 with Ti in the presence of NaCl (950-520°C, 21 d). The structure refinement from four-circle diffractometer data confirms that Na2TiCl4 is isotypic with Sr2PbO4 (orthorhombic, space group Pbam (No. 55), Z = 2 a = 694.2(1), b = 1 198.9(2), c = 385.6(1) pm, R = 0.055, Rw = 0,038). Ti2+ is surrounded by a distorted octahedron of Cl-. The octahedra are connected via common edges to chains, ∞1[TiCl2/1Cl4/2]2-, that run in the [001] direction. Magnetic susceptibility data were recorded in the 2 to 300 K temperature range at various field strengths. The interpretation of the data was carried out with the aid of crystal-field calculations taking magnetic interactions into account. The non-Curie behaviour of the reciprocal magnetic susceptibility of Ti2+ in Na2TiCl4 is due to the influence of spin-obit coupling.

Description: Author(s): Tiago Mendes-Santos, Thereza Paiva, and Raimundo R. dos Santos We discuss how entanglement of strongly correlated fermions is influenced by a superlattice structure by considering a one-dimensional Hubbard superlattice, made up of a repeated pattern of L U repulsive sites followed by L 0 free sites. Lanczos diagonalization of lattices up to 24 sites is used to ca... [Phys. Rev. B 87, 214407] Published Fri Jun 07, 2013

Description: Author(s): Q. J. Li, Z. Y. Zhao, C. Fan, F. B. Zhang, H. D. Zhou, X. Zhao, and X. F. Sun We report a study on the thermal conductivity ( κ ) of Tb 2 Ti 2 O 7 single crystals at low temperatures. It is found that in zero field this material has an extremely low phonon thermal conductivity in a broad temperature range. The mean free path of phonons is even smaller than that of amorphous material... [Phys. Rev. B 87, 214408] Published Fri Jun 07, 2013
