    Beschreibung: The main goal of this study is to provide moment tensor solutions for small and moderate earthquakes of the Matese seismic sequence in southern Italy for the period of December 2013–January 2014. We estimate the focal mechanisms of 31 earthquakes with local magnitudes related to the Matese earthquake seismic sequence (December 2013–January 2014) in Southern-Central Italy which are recorded by the broadband stations of the Italian National Seismic Network and the Mediterranean Very Broadband Seismographic Network (MedNet) run by the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV). The solutions show that normal faulting is the prevailing style of seismic deformation in agreement with the local faults mapped outin the area. Comparisons with already published solutions and with seismological and geological information available allowed us to properly interpret the moment tensor solutions in the frame of the seismic sequence evolution and also to furnish additional information about less energetic seismic phases. Focal data were inverted to obtain the seismogenic stress in the study area. The results are compatible with the major tectonic domain of the area.

    Beschreibung: In questo lavoro viene descritta l’installazione di una rete mobile nell’area dei Monti Nebrodi in seguito all’evento del 23-06-2011 di Ml = 4.6 e come tale intervento ha contribuito al miglioramento della localizzazione delle sorgenti sismiche soprattutto nella determinazione della profondità degli eventi. Verranno anche presentati i risultati delle localizzazioni ottenute attraverso l’integrazione dei dati acquisiti durante questa campagna, con quelli della rete sismica permanente dell’INGV-Osservatorio Etneo ( INGV -OE).

    Beschreibung: Source parameters of the mainshock (ML=5.3) and of 165 aftershocks (0.8 〈 ML 〈 3.5) of the 2004 Kobarid (Western Slovenia) seismic sequence are investigated in order to determine the corresponding source scaling relations. Data recorded from July to December 2004 by the Friuli and Veneto seismic network (FV), managed by the Istituto Nazionale di Oceanografia e di Geofisica Sperimentale (OGS) and installed in Northeastern Italy, are employed to obtain the SH-wave amplitude Fourier spectra of the selected earthquakes. For source spectra computation, we consider only records with significant values of the signal-to-noise ratio and, to account for local amplifications, we compute standard H/V spectral ratios (HVSR) for all the stations of the network. After correction for attenuation effects, source spectra obtained at stations with negligible site effects show a good fit with a ω-square model. We adopt different approaches to compute the source parameters and final results are chosen based on the obtained misfits between observed and theoretical source spectra. For 21 earthquakes of the sequence the obtained results are confirmed by the Empirical Green Function (EGF) technique, applied by estimating the spectral ratios of couples of events with hypocentral distance differences smaller than 500 m and magnitude differences greater than 1. The mainshock of the sequence is characterized by a seismic moment of 3.5x10^16 Nm and a corner frequency of 0.8 Hz, corresponding, in the Brune’s model (1970), to a fault radius of 1465 m and a stress drop of 4.9 MPa. Aftershocks have seismic moments in the range [3.3x10^11, 1.8x10^14] Nm, corner frequencies between 1.9 and 12.4 Hz (Brune radii between 95 and 638 m) and stress drops in the range [0.03, 1.55] MPa. The observed scaling of seismic moment (M0) with the local magnitude (ML) is consistent with the trend: Log M0 = 1.06 ML + 10.56. The Brune radius (rB) increases with the seismic moment according to: Log rB = 0.22 Log M0 - 0.40. Moreover, in spite of the high dispersion that characterizes the estimates of the Brune stress drop (ΔσB), we observe also an increase of ΔσB with M0. The mainshock is characterized by 2.4 x10^12 J radiated energy (ES) and 1.9 MPa apparent stress (σa). Aftershocks have energies between 2.0 x10^5 and 7.4 x10^8 J and apparent stress values increasing with the seismic moment in the range [0.01, 0.48] MPa. Radiated energies increase with seismic moments according to the empirical relationship: Log ES = 1.53 Log M0 - 12.47. The scaling of both ΔσB and σa with M0 in the range of magnitude between 0.8 to 5.3, evidences the non-self-similarity characteristics of the 2004 Kobarid seismic sequence. Similar results have been obtained by previous studies concerning the source parameter scaling of the background seismicity and of other seismic sequences of the area.

    Beschreibung: Recognizing the seismogenic source of major historical earthquakes, particularly when these have occurred offshore, is a long-standing issue across the Mediterranean Sea and elsewhere. The destructive earthquake (M ~7) that struck western Calabria (southern Italy) on the night of 8 September 1905 is one such case. having various authors proposed a seismogenic source, with apparently diverse hypotheses and without achieving a unique solution. To gain novel insight into the crustal volume where the 1905 earthquake took place and to seek a more robust solution for the seismogenic source associated with this destructive event, we carried out a well-targeted multidisciplinary survey within the Gulf of S. Eufemia (SE Tyrrhenian Sea), collecting geophysical data, oceanographic measurements, and biological, chemical and sedimentary samples. We identified three main tectonic features affecting the sedimentary basin in the Gulf of S. Eufemia: 1) a NE-SW striking, ca. 13-km-long, normal fault, here named S. Eufemia Fault; 2) a WNW-striking polyphased fault system; and 3) a likely E-W trending lineament. Among these, the normal fault shows evidence of activity witnessed by the deformed recent sediments and by its seabed rupture along which, locally, fluid leakage occurs. Features in agreement with the anomalous distribution of prokaryotic abundance and biopolymeric C content, resulted from the shallow sediments analyses. The numerous seismogenic sources proposed in the literature during the past 15 years make up a composite framework of this sector of western Calabria, that we tested against a) the geological evidence from the newly acquired dataset, and b) the regional seismotectonic models. Such assessment allows us to propose the NE-SW striking normal fault as the most probable candidate for the seismogenic source of the 1905 earthquake. Re-appraising a major historical earthquake as the 1905 one enhances the seismotectonic picture of western Calabria. Further understanding of the region and better constraining the location of the seismogenic source may be attained through integrated interpretation of our data together with a) on-land field evidence, and b) seismological modeling.

    Beschreibung: Twenty-five lava fountains occurred on Mt. Etna from January 2011 to April 2012. In summer 2012 volcanic activity resumed in a milder form within the Bocca Nuova crater, before it came to an essential halt in August 2012. All these unrests offer rich material for testing automatic procedures of data processing and alert systems, running 24/7, in the context of volcano surveillance. We focus on the seismic background radiation – volcanic tremor – which plays a key role in the monitoring of Mt. Etna. Since 2006 a multistation alert system has been established in the INGV operative centre of Catania exploiting STA/LTA ratios. Besides, also the spectral characteristics of the signal, which change correspondingly to the type of volcanic activity, can be exploited for warning purposes. Here we apply Self Organizing Maps and Fuzzy Clustering which offer an efficient way to visualize signal characteristics and its development with time. All these techniques allow to identify early stages of eruptive events, and automatically flag a critical status before this becomes evident in conventional monitoring techniques. Changes of tremor characteristics are related to the position of the source of the signal. The location of the sources exploits the distribution of the amplitudes across the seismic network. The locations were extremely useful for warning, throughout both the flank eruption in 2008 as well as the 2011 lava fountains, during which a clear migration of tremor sources towards the eruptive centres could be noticed in advance. The location of the sources completes the picture of an imminent volcanic unrest, and corroborates early warnings flagged by the changes of signal characteristics. Real time data processing requires computational efficiency, robustness of the methods and stability of data acquisition. The amplitude based multi-station approach is not sensitive to the failure of single stations and therefore offers a good stability. The single station approach, exploiting unsupervised classification techniques, limits logistic efforts, as only one or few key stations are necessary. Both strategies have proven to be insensitive to disturbances (undesired transients like earthquakes, noise, short gaps in the continuous data flow). False alarms were not encountered so far. Stable data acquisition and processing come with a properly designed data storage solution. The reliability of data storage and its access is a critical issue. A cluster architecture has been realized for failover protection, including a Storage Area Network system, which allow easy data access following predefined user policies. We present concepts of the software architectures deployed at INGV Osservatorio Etneo in order to implement this tremor-based multi approach system. We envisage the integration of seismic data and those originating from other scientific fields (e. g., volcano imagery, geochemistry, deformation, gravity, magneto-telluric). This will facilitate cross-checking of evidences encountered from the single data streams, in particular allow their immediate verification with respect to ground truth.

    Beschreibung: Several fundamental questions (conundrums) about earthquakes and rocks are inexplicable in terms of conventional sub-critical geophysics. These questions have become so familiar that they are now generally accepted as the way earthquakes and rocks behave and are not recognised as presenting conceptual difficulties. These conundrums are resolved by a new understanding of fluid-rock deformation, where fluid-saturated microcracks in almost all rocks are so closely-spaced they verge on failure and hence are highly-compliant critical-systems which impose a range of new properties on conventional sub-critical geophysics. This new understanding of fluid-rock deformation, this New Geophysics, allows earthquakes to be stress-forecast, and has implications and applications to many solid Earth developments.

    Beschreibung: The source properties of the Long-Period events that occurred at Campi Flegrei Caldera (Italy) during the 2004–2006 ground uplift episode are investigated by analyzing the temporal release of seismic energy, amplitude distribution and inter-event occurrence time. Moreover, an entropy-based decomposition method is applied to identify the simpler waveforms thought to be representative of the source mechanism of Long-Period events. On the basis of the outcomes, we propose that the main part of these events is the result of a source process triggered by a mechanism of fluid charge/discharge, which causes pressure drop in a main branch of a dentritic network of the hydrothermal system. In this model, the rate of the Poissonian process (about 15 min), which drives the occurrence of the Long-Period events, provides the average recharge time of the system up to the critical condition. A partial shunting of the fluid flow away from the main conduit activates the ”resonance” of a second branch, spatially separated from the first one. This is a process that occurs whenever the fluid pressure exceeds a critical value and produces less energetic Long-Period events. The mechanism of pressure variation in the two conduits generates signals with preferred amplitude scales, described by a bi-lognormal distribution. From a dynamical point of view, Long-Period events result well described by a low-dimensional dynamical system. Finally, the time pattern of the energy release and its correlation with the diurnal solid earth tide suggest that the whole mechanism of fluid charge/discharge is likely modulated by tidal stress variation.

    Beschreibung: The 2001 Etna eruption occurred from July 17th to August 9th, 2001 and was preceded by several days of intense seismicity and ground deformation. We investigated the seismic activity recorded during November 2000 - June 2001 interval time preceding the eruption, to understand the meaning of the seismicity connected to the dike intrusion, that locally modified the stress field acting in the area. The earthquakes were recorded by the permanent local networks operating during that time and run by the Istituto Internazionale di Vulcanologia (IIV-CNR) and the Sistema POSEIDON. During the analyzed period, 683 earthquakes have been firstly localized by means of a 1D velocity model derived from Hirn et al., 1991 using the software HypoEllipse [Lahr, U. S. Geol. Survey, Open-File Report, 89/116, 81 pp., 1989]. In order to further improve the quality of the seismic dataset, we extracted 522 earthquakes with Gap less than 200°, Erh 〈 1.5 km, Erz 〈 2 km, RMS less than 0.5 sec, and a minimum number of S phases equal to 2. This latter seismic dataset was relocated using TomoDD code [Zhang and Thurber, BSSA, 93, 1875-1889. 2003] and a 3D velocity model [Patanè et al., Science, 313, 821- 823, 2006 after modified]. Using first motion polarity data, 3D fault plane solutions were computed by means of the software FPFIT [Reasenberg and Oppenheimer, U.S. Geological Survey Open File Report, 85/739, 109 pp, 1985]. Then, adopting restricted selection criteria (Npol more than 12; focal plane uncertainties less than 20°; number of solutions 〈 2; number of discrepancies less than 15%), we selected 116 FPSs. This dataset represented the input file for the stress and strain tensors computation using the inversion codes developed by Gephart and Forsyth,[ JGR 89: 9305-9320, 1984] and by Kostrov [Izv Acad Sci USSR Phys Solid Earth, 1, 23-40], respectively. On the basis of P and T axes distribution and the orientation of the main seismogenic stress and strain axes, we put some seismological constraints on the recharging phase leading to the 2001 Etna eruption.

    Beschreibung: We present the first application of a time reverse location method in a volcanic setting, for a family of long-period (LP) events recorded on Mt Etna. Results are compared with locations determined using a full moment tensor grid search inversion and cross-correlation method. From 2008 June 18 to July 3, 50 broad-band seismic stations were deployed on Mt Etna, Italy, in close proximity to the summit. Two families of LP events were detected with dominant spectral peaks around 0.9 Hz. The large number of stations close to the summit allowed us to locate all events in both families using a time reversal location method. The method involves taking the seismic signal, reversing it in time, and using it as a seismic source in a numerical seismic wave simulator where the reversed signals propagate through the numerical model, interfere constructively and destructively, and focus on the original source location. The source location is the computational cell with the largest displacement magnitude at the time of maximum energy current density inside the grid. Before we located the two LP families we first applied the method to two synthetic data sets and found a good fit between the time reverse location and true synthetic location for a known velocity model. The time reverse location results of the two families show a shallow seismic region close to the summit in agreement with the locations using a moment tensor full waveform inversion method and a cross-correlation location method.

    Beschreibung: Understanding the behavior of natural faults at cosesimic slip velocities (v ~ 1–10 m/s or more) has become a challenging achievement for experimentalists and modelers of earthquake instabilities. The rate– and state–dependent friction laws, originally obtained in slow slip rate conditions, have been widely adopted in dynamic rupture models by assuming their validity well above the experimental range of observations. In this paper we consider a modification at high speeds, in which the steady state friction becomes independent on v above a transitional value vT . Our results show that this modification has dramatic effects on the dynamic propagation; as long as vT decreases the breakdown stress drop decreases, as well as the slip–weakening distance and the fracture energy density. Moreover, we found that the subshear regime is favored as vT decreases; we found that for the strength parameter S greater than 1.482 the supershear rupture propagation is inhibited. Finally, we demonstrate that the exponential weakening, often observed in laboratory experiments, can be theoretically explained in the framework of the rate and state laws.

    Beschreibung: To recognize possible spatial clusters and identify active seismogenic zones and structures in the Aeolian Archipelago, in the south of Italy, we analyzed the spatial pattern of seismicity between 1993 and 2010 in a selected area comprising Vulcano, Lipari, Salina and Filicudi and calculated 22 fault plane solutions (FPSs) for shocks with magnitude greater than 2.7. First, we computed a 1-D velocity model for this area including information from recorded earthquakes by a joint hypocenter-velocity inversion (Kissling et al., 1994). Successively, we applied the double-difference approach of Waldhauser and Ellsworth (2000), finding that a certain part of the scattered epicenter locations collapse in roughly linear features. Relocated seismicity evidenced three main alignments, oriented NNW-SSE and NE-SW at different depths that concur well with the known tectonic lineaments and focal mechanisms. A detailed discussion is focused on a seismogenetic structure, NE-SW oriented, 3-8 km deep, located in the northern area of Vulcano island. This recognized element could represent a link between magma accumulation zones, thus representing a possible preferential pathway along which magma may intrude. Two earthquake clusters, located south-west and east of Vulcano, with their focal mechanisms, highlight the Aeolian-Tindari-Letojanni Fault System seismic activity and the existence of a transitional zone going from the N-S compressive domain that dominates the Aeolian Islands to the NW-SE extensional domain characterizing the south-eastern Thyrrhenian.

    Beschreibung: In this paper we investigate nature and properties of narrow-band, transient seismic signals observed by a temporary array deployed in the Val Tiberina area (central Apennines, Italy). These signals are characterized by spindle-shaped, harmonic waveforms with no clear S-wave arrivals. The first portion of the seismograms exhibits a main frequency peak centred at 4.5 Hz, while the spectrum of the slowly decaying coda is peaked at about 2 Hz. Events discrimination is performed using a matched-filtering technique, resulting in a set of 2466 detections spanning the 2010 January–March time interval. From a plane-wave-fitting procedure, we estimate the kinematic properties of signals pertaining to a cluster of similar events. The repetition of measurements over a large number of precisely aligned seismograms allows for obtaining a robust statistics of horizontal slownesses and propagation azimuths associated with the early portion of the waveforms. The P-wave arrival exhibits horizontal slownesses around 0.1 s km−1, thus suggesting waves impinging at the array almost vertically. Separately, we use traveltimes measured at a sparse network to derive independent constraints on epicentral location. Ray parameters and azimuths are calibrated using slowness measurements from a local, well-located earthquake. After this correction, the joint solution from traveltime inversion and array analysis indicates a source region spanning the 1–3 km depth interval. Considerations related to the source depth and energy, and the occurrence rate which is not related to the daily and weekly working cycles, play against a surface, artificial source. Instead, the close resemblance of these signals to those commonly observed in volcanic environments suggest a source mechanism related to the resonance of a fluid–filled fracture, likely associated with instabilities in the flux of pressurized CO2.

    Beschreibung: In this work we propose a high performance parallelization of the software package COMPSYN, devoted to the production of syntethic seismograms, on a cluster of multicore processors with multiple GPUs. To design and implement the proposed high performance version, we started from a na¨ıve parallel version of COMPSYN. The na¨ıve version consists in a simple parallelization on both device side, obtained by exploiting CUDA, and host side, obtained by exploiting the MPI paradigm and OpenMP API. The proposed high performance version implements several practical techniques of CUDA programming and deeply exploits the GPU architecture, thus achieving a much better performance with respect to the na¨ıve version. We compare the performance of the proposed high performance version and that of the na¨ıve one with the performance of the version running on the cluster of multicore processors without invoking the GPUs. We obtain for the high performance GPU version a speedup of 25x over the version running on the cluster of multicore processors without GPUs against the 10x of the na¨ıve version. Regarding the sequential version, we estimate about 380x the speedup of the high performance GPU version against the about 140x of the na¨ıve version.

    Beschreibung: In this paper the history of the Mobile Seismic Network of the Osservatorio Vesuviano (at present Department of Napoli of the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia – INGV) is described. The instrumental development and the main research and monitoring activities since the early 1980’ are reported. Starting from the analog stations with magnetic tape recording to the first digital stations with trigger recording, until the modern multichannel 24bit devices, the technological development of the last 30 years has given a strong contribution to increase the knowledge in the seismology and seismotectonics fields. The Mobile Seismic Network has been engaged in active and passive seismic studies both on volcanic and tectonic areas. Particularly, the contribution of the Mobile Seismic Network for the monitoring of Neapolitan active volcanoes has been very important to improve the Permanent Network. During seismic crises high quality data have been gathered allowing detailed analyses of the seismic activity. Moreover, the time synchronization by means of GPS time code allowed the deployment of the Mobile Network abroad and the collaboration with the main international research institutes. At present, the Mobile Seismic Network of the Osservatorio Vesuviano is developing on multichannel acquisition systems, also in array configuration, to gathered simultaneously seismic signals with a large frequency band.

    Beschreibung: At Stromboli volcano, Italy, continuous seismic monitoring and periodic, visual observations of volcanic activity for surveillance purposes began in the mid-1980s. Since 1985, two eruptions have occurred, one lasting from December, 1985 until April, 1986, and one in May, 1993. There have also been two small overflows, in 1990 and 1994. Since these episodes of lava effusion, the persistent Strombolian activity of the volcano has had several fluctuations during the past 15 years. Some episodes climaxed in powerful explosions. According to seismic records, these paroxysms consisted of a variable number of explosion quakes in rapid succession (i.e. from tens of seconds to a few minutes), associated with a notable increment in the amplitude of volcanic tremor. Throughout these episodes - which are called explosive sequences - lapilli, fragments of old rock, and bombs of varying dimensions were ejected, affecting an area greater than the crater terrace where the active craters are located. In this article, we describe the explosive sequences recorded at Stromboli between 1985 and 1999. We provide a characterization in terms of reduced displacement and duration for nine episodes occurring in 1998 and 1999. Their reduced displacements range from 15 to 124 cm2; their durations are between 6 and 18 min. We find no change in the frequency content of the seismic signal several minutes before and during the sequences. Considering medium- to long-term behavior, the spectral amplitude of the seismic signal decreases or has low values over several months preceding the occurrence of the paroxysms. This feature is common to 20 of the 22 explosive sequences, and is indicative of internal conditions that periodically characterize the feeder. We surmise that the paroxysms are the result of the partial obstruction of the volcanic conduit when the magma column is low or dropping. The onset of the explosive sequence, causing the sudden removal of the material which forms the obstruction, would trigger a sudden depressurization of the conduit and the rapid rise of magma from depth.

    Beschreibung: Crustal tectonic seismicity in the Southern Tyrrhenian Sea is characterized by the high occurrence rates of earthquakes to the west of the alignment of Salina, Lipari and Vulcano islands in the Aeolian archipelago. Only a few earthquakes affect the crustal region east of these islands, whereas intermediate and deep seismicity plays a relevant role. Based on this evidence, two aspects of the seismic swarm recorded at the Aeolian Island Seismic Network between June 6 and 17, 1999 looked anomalous. The first aspect concerned the number of earthquakes (78) that affected the Stromboli submarine edifice in a short time interval. Secondly, despite the low maximum magnitude Md 3.2 reached, the cumulative strain release was conspicuous in comparison with previous swarms in this region. We localized the swarm about 6 km northeast of Stromboli, at a depth between 8 and 12km. The source region was identified using standard methods of hypocentral location, as well as azimuth analysis. It is worth noting that the volcanic activity at Stromboli did not change significantly during the swarm nor throughout the following months. Therefore, the seismic swarm had no link with volcanic activity observed at the surface. Most of the earthquakes shared similar waveform and frequency content, and can be divided into families. We identified some earthquakes - with magnitude up to Md 3 - having relatively low frequency content at different seismic stations. This anomalous feature leads us to hypothesize the presence of fluid circulation and/or propagation of seismic waves in a ductile medium. Our hypothesis is in agreement with studies on marine geology, which highlight various forms of submarine volcanism in the southern basin of the Tyrrhenian Sea.

    Beschreibung: In this paper we consider a wide catalog of synthetic earthquakes, numerically modeled as spontaneous, fully dynamic, 3-D ruptures on extended faults, governed by different friction laws, including slip-dependent and rate- and state-dependent equations.We analyze the spatial correlations between the peak of fault slip velocity (v_peak) and the rupture speed (v_r) at which the earthquake spreads over the fault. We found that vpeak positively correlates with vr and that the increase of v_peak is roughly quadratic. We found that near the transition between sub- and supershear regimes vpeak significantly diminishes and then starts to increase againwith the square of v_r. This holds for all the governing models we consider and for both homogeneous and heterogeneous configurations. Moreover, we found that, on average, v_peak increases with the magnitude of the event (v_peak~M_0^0.18). Our results can be incorporated as constraints in the inverse modeling of faults.

    Beschreibung: Earthquakes are the result of a combination of (1) physico-chemical processes operating in fault zones. which allow ruptures to nucleate and rock friction to decrease with increasing slip or slip rate, and (2) of the geometrical complexity of fault zones. In this review paper, we summarize recent experimental findings from high velocity (conducted at about 1 m/s slip rate, or typical seismic slip rates) rock friction experiments with an emphasis on potential dynamic weakening mechanisms (melt lubrication, nano-powder lubrication, etc.) and how these mechanisms might be recognized by means of microstructural and mineralogical studies in exhumed fault zones. We discuss how earthquake source parameters (coseismic fault strength, weakening distances, energy budgets, etc.) might be derived from the field and laboratory experiments. Additionally, we discuss what needs to be considered in terms of fault zone geometry and morphology (focusing on fault surface roughness) in order to develop models of realistic fault surfaces and present theoretical considerations for microphysical modeling of laboratory data at seismic slip rates, with an emphasis on the case of melt lubrication. All experimental data and, in the case of melt lubrication, microphysical models indicate that faults must be very weak (mu 〈 0.1) during coseismic slip. Moreover, experiments have shown that the slip weakening distance during coseismic slip is on the order of a few tens of centimeters at most under natural conditions, consistent with inferences from field observations. Finally, we discuss open questions, future challenges and opportunities in the field of earthquake mechanics. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

    Beschreibung: Though mode II shear fractures (primarily strike–slip earthquakes) can not only exceed the shear wave speed of the medium, but can even reach the compressional wave speed, steady–state calculations showed that speeds between the Rayleigh and shear wave speeds were not possible, thus defining a forbidden zone. For more than 30 years it was believed that this result in which the rupture jumps over the forbidden zone, also holds for 3–D ruptures, in which mode II and mode III (mainly dip–slip faulting) are mixed. Using unprecedentedly fine spatial and temporal grids, we show that even in the simple configuration of homogeneous fault properties and linear slip–weakening friction law, a realistic 3–D rupture which starts from rest and accelerates to some higher velocity, actually does pass smoothly through this forbidden zone, but very fast. The energy flux from the rupture tip is always positive, even within the so-called forbidden zone, contrary to the 2–D case. Finally, our results show that the width of the cohesive zone initially decreases, then increases as the rupture exceeds the shear wave speed and finally again decreases as the rupture accelerates to a speed of ~ 90% of the compressional wave speed.

    Beschreibung: The Pernicana–Provenzana Fault System is one of the most active tectonic systems of Mt. Etna and it plays an important role in the dynamic of the eastern flank of the volcano. Earthquakes occurring close to this structural trend have reached magnitudes up to 4.2, sometimes with coseismic surface faulting, and have caused severe damages to tourist resorts and villages in the vicinity of this structure. In the last decade, a large number of shocks, sometimes in the form of swarms, linked to Pernicana–Provenzana Fault System movements have been detected by the permanent local seismic network operating in eastern Sicily. In this paper, we report on the detailed study of the seismic activity occurring during the 2000–2009 time span in the Pernicana–Provenzana Fault System area. Firstly, we located 407 earthquakes using a standard location code and a 1D crustal velocity model. We then applied two different approaches to calculate precise hypocenter locations of the events. In particular, a non-linear code was adopted to obtain an estimate of the a posteriori Probability Density Function in 3D space for the hypocenter location. Moreover, a relative location of correlated event pairs was performed, using the double-difference method. These two different location approaches allowed defining with good accuracy, the most active and hazarding sectors of the structure. The results of these precise locations showed a tighter clustering in the epicenters and in focal depths, in comparison with standard locations. Earthquakes are located along the Pernicana–Provenzana Fault System, and are mainly clustered in two zones, separated by an area with very low rate of earthquakes occurrence, but characterized by the highest energy release. Depths of the foci are very shallow, ranging between the surface and about 3 km b.s.l. Kinematics of the Pernicana–Provenzana Fault System, revealed by the fault plane solutions computed for the most energetic earthquakes, highlights a predominant dip–slip and left strike movements along E–W oriented fault planes, in agreement with field observations.

    Beschreibung: We present the first application of a time reverse location method in a volcanic setting, for a family of long-period (LP) events recorded on Mt Etna. Results are compared with locations determined using a full moment tensor grid search inversion and cross-correlation method. From 2008 June 18 to July 3, 50 broad-band seismic stations were deployed on Mt Etna, Italy, in close proximity to the summit. Two families of LP events were detected with dominant spectral peaks around 0.9 Hz. The large number of stations close to the summit allowed us to locate all events in both families using a time reversal location method. The method involves taking the seismic signal, reversing it in time, and using it as a seismic source in a numerical seismic wave simulator where the reversed signals propagate through the numerical model, interfere constructively and destructively, and focus on the original source location. The source location is the computational cell with the largest displacement magnitude at the time of maximum energy current density inside the grid. Before we located the two LP families we first applied the method to two synthetic data sets and found a good fit between the time reverse location and true synthetic location for a known velocity model. The time reverse location results of the two families show a shallow seismic region close to the summit in agreement with the locations using a moment tensor full waveform inversion method and a cross-correlation location method.

    Beschreibung: After an earthquake, rapid, real-time assessment of hazards such as ground shaking and tsunami potential is important for early warning and emergency response. Tsunami potential depends on sea floor displacement, which is related to the length, L, width, W, mean slip, D, and depth, z, of earthquake rupture. Currently, the primary discriminant for tsunami potential is the centroid-moment tensor magnitude, MwCMT, representing the seismic potency LWD, and estimated through an indirect, inversion procedure. The obtained MwCMT and the implied LWD value vary with the depth of faulting, assumed earth model and other factors, and is only available 30 min or more after an earthquake. The use of more direct procedures for hazard assessment, when available, could avoid these problems and aid in effective early warning. Here we present a direct procedure for rapid assessment of earthquake tsunami potential using two, simple measures on P-wave seismograms – the dominant period on the velocity records, Td, and the likelihood that the high-frequency, apparent rupture-duration, T0, exceeds 50-55 sec. T0 can be related to the critical parameters L and z, while Td may be related to W, D or z. For a set of recent, large earthquakes, we show that the period-duration product TdT0 gives more information on tsunami impact and size than MwCMT and other currently used discriminants. All discriminants have difficulty in assessing the tsunami potential for oceanic strike-slip and back-arc or upper-plate, intraplate earthquake types. Our analysis and results suggest that tsunami potential is not directly related to the potency LWD from the “seismic” faulting model, as is assumed with the use of the MwCMT discriminant. Instead, knowledge of rupture length, L, and depth, z, alone can constrain well the tsunami potential of an earthquake, with explicit determination of fault width, W, and slip, D, being of secondary importance. With available real-time seismogram data, rapid calculation of the direct, period- duration discriminant can be completed within 6-10 min after an earthquake occurs and thus can aid in effective and reliable tsunami early warning.

    Beschreibung: Stress can undergo rapid temporal changes in volcanic environments, and this is particularly true during eruptions. We use two independent methods, coda wave interferometry (CWI) and shear wave splitting (SWS) analysis to track stress related wave propagation effects during the waning phase of the 2002 NE fissure eruption at Mt Etna. CWI is used to estimate temporal changes in seismic wave velocity, while SWS is employed to monitor changes in elastic anisotropy. We analyse seismic doublets, detecting temporal changes both in wave velocities and anisotropy, consistent with observed eruptive activity. In particular, syn-eruptive wave propagation changes indicate a depressurization of the system, heralding the termination of the eruption, which occurs three days later.

    Beschreibung: We present a duration-amplitude procedure for rapid determination of a moment magnitude, Mwpd, for large earthquakes using P-wave recordings at teleseismic distances. Mwpd can be obtained within 20 minutes or less after the event origin time as the required data is currently available in near-real time. The procedure determines apparent source durations, T0, from high-frequency, P-wave records, and estimates moments through integration of broadband displacement waveforms over the interval tP to tP+T0, where tP is the P arrival time. We apply the duration-amplitude methodology to 79 recent, large earthquakes (Global Centroid- Moment Tensor magnitude, MwCMT, 6.6 to 9.3) with diverse source types. The results show that a scaling of the moment estimates for interplate thrust and possibly tsunami earthquakes is necessary to best match MwCMT. With this scaling, Mwpd matches MwCMT typically within ±0.2 magnitude units, with a standard deviation of σ=0.11, equaling or outperforming other approaches to rapid magnitude determination. Furthermore, Mwpd does not exhibit saturation; that is, for the largest events, Mwpd does not systematically underestimate MwCMT. The obtained durations and duration-amplitude moments allow rapid estimation of an energy-to-moment parameter Θ* used for identification of tsunami earthquakes. Our results show that Θ* ≤ -5.7 is an appropriate cutoff for this identification, but also show that neither Θ* nor Mw is a good indicator for tsunamigenic events in general. For these events we find that a reliable indicator is simply that the duration T0 is greater than about 50 sec. The explicit use of the source duration for integration of displacement seismograms, the moment scaling, and other characteristics of the duration-amplitude methodology make it an extension of the widely used, Mwp, rapid-magnitude procedure. The need for a moment scaling for interplate thrust and possibly tsunami earthquakes may have important implications for the source physics of these events.

    Beschreibung: A seismic noise recording experiment has been carried out in the Campi Flegrei volcanic area from March 9 to 26, 2009 in the framework of the INGV-DPC 2007-2009 agreement (Project V1 – UNREST). The project aimed at the realization of an integrated method for the definition of the unrest phases at Campi Flegrei. 21 digital three-component seismic stations equipped with broad band seismometers have been added to the existing 11 digital stations already deployed in the area. The preliminary results show a correlation between the seismic noise level and the anthropic activity, whereas the meteorological conditions seem affecting the low frequency seismic noise. These results are important to define the detection thresholds of the seismic signals generated during a possible renewal phase of the volcanic activity.

    Beschreibung: In this work we present a 3D Finite Difference numerical method to model the dynamic spontaneous propagation of an earthquake rupture on planar faults in an elastic half-space. We implement the Traction-at-Split-Nodes fault boundary condition for a system of faults, either vertical or oblique, using different constitutive laws. We can adopt both a slip-weakening law to prescribe the traction evolution within the breakdown zone or rate- and state-dependent friction laws, which involve the choice of an evolution relation for the state variable. Our numerical procedure allows the use of oblique and heterogeneous distribution of initial stress and allows the rake rotation. This implies that the two components of slip velocity and total dynamic traction are coupled together to satisfy, in norm, the adopted constitutive law. The simulations presented in this study show that the rupture acceleration to super-shear crack speeds occurs along the direction of the imposed initial stress; the rupture front velocity along the perpendicular direction is slower than that along the pre-stress direction. Depending on the position on the fault plane the orientation of instantaneous total dynamic traction can change with time with respect to the imposed initial stress direction. These temporal rake rotations depend on the amplitude of initial stress and on its distribution on the fault plane. They also depend on the curvature and direction of the rupture front with respect to the imposed initial stress direction: this explains why rake rotations are mostly located near the rupture front and within the cohesive zone.

    Beschreibung: In order to verify the duration magnitude MD we calculated local magnitude ML values of 288 earthquakes occurring from October 2002 to April 2003 at Mt. Etna. The analysis was computed at three digital stations of the permanent seismic network of Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia of Catania, using the relationship ML = logA+alog?-b, where A is maximum half-amplitude of the horizontal component of the seismic recording measured in mm and the term «+alog?-b» takes the place of the term «-logA0» of Richter relationship. In particular, a = 0.15 for ?〈200 km, b=0.16 for ?〈200 km. Duration magnitude MD values, moment magnitude MW values and other local magnitude values were compared. Differences between ML and MD were obtained for the strong seismic swarms occurring on October 27, during the onset of 2002-2003 Mt. Etna eruption, characterized by a high earthquake rate, with very strong events (seismogram results clipped in amplitude on drum recorder trace) and high level of volcanic tremor, which not permit us to estimate the duration of the earthquakes correctly. ML and MD relationships were related and therefore a new relationship for MD is proposed. Cumulative strain release calculated after the eruption using ML values is about 1.75E+06 J1/2 higher than the one calculated using MD values.

    Beschreibung: We investigate the effects of non-uniform distribution of constitutive parameters on the dynamic propagation of an earthquake rupture. We use a 2D finite difference numerical method and we assume that the dynamic rupture propagation is governed by a rate- and state-dependent constitutive law. We first discuss the results of several numerical experiments performed with different values of the constitutive parameters a (to account for the direct effect of friction), b (controlling the friction evolution) and L (the characteristic length-scale parameter) to simulate the dynamic rupture propagation on homogeneous faults. Spontaneous dynamic ruptures can be simulated on velocity weakening (a 〈 b) fault patches: our results point out the dependence of the traction and slip velocity evolution on the adopted constitutive parameters. We therefore model the dynamic rupture propagation on heterogeneous faults. We use in this study the characterization of different frictional regimes proposed by Boatwright and Cocco (1996) based on different values of the constitutive parameters a, b and L. Our numerical simulations show that the heterogeneities of the L parameter affect the dynamic rupture propagation, control the peak slip velocity and weakly modify the dynamic stress drop and the rupture velocity. Moreover, a barrier can be simulated through a large contrast of L parameter. The heterogeneity of a and b parameters affects the dynamic rupture propagation in a more complex way. A velocity strengthening area (a 〉 b) can arrest a dynamic rupture, but can be driven to an instability if suddenly loaded by the dynamic rupture front. Our simulations provide a picture of the complex interactions between fault patches having different frictional properties and illustrate how the traction and slip velocity evolutions are modified during the propagation on heterogeneous faults. These results involve interesting implications for slip duration and fracture energy.

    Beschreibung: The northern coast of Sicily and its offshore area represent a hinge zone between a sector of the Tyrrhenian Basin, characterized by the strongest crustal thinning, and the sector of the Sicilian belt which has emerged. This hinge zone is part of a wider W-E trending right-lateral shear zone, which has been affecting the Maghrebian Chain units since the Pliocene. Seismological and structural data have been used to evaluate the seismotectonic behavior of the area investigated here. Seismological analysis was performed on a data set of about 2100 seismic events which occurred between January 1988 and October 2002 in the Southern Tyrrhenian Sea. This paper focuses in particular on a set of data relating to the period from 6th September 2002, including both the main shock and about 540 aftershocks of the Palermo seismic sequence. The distribution of the hypocenters revealed the presence of two main seismogenic zones. The events of the easternmost zone may be related to the Ionian lithospheric slab diving beneath the Calabrian Arc. The seismicity associated with the westernmost zone is closely clustered around a sub-horizontal regression plane contained within the thinned Southern Tyrrhenian crust, hence suggesting that this seismogenic zone is strictly connected to the deformation field active within the hinge zone. On the basis of both structural and seismological data, the brittle deformation pattern is characterized by high-angle faults, mainly represented by transcurrent synthetic right-lateral and antithetic left-lateral systems, producing both restraining/uplifting and releasing/subsiding zones which accommodate strains developing in response to the current stress field (characterized by a maximum axis trending NW-SE) which has been active in the area since the Pliocene. The cluster of the seismic sequence which started with the 6th September 2002's main shock is located within the hinge zone. The distribution of the hypocenters relative to this sequence emphasizes the presence of a high-angle NE-SW-oriented deformation belt within which several shear surfaces are considered to be found sub-parallel to that established for the main shock. The kinematics of all these structures is consistent with a compressive right-lateral focal mechanism.

    Beschreibung: We present a seismotectonic study of the Amatrice-Campotosto area (Central Italy) based on an integrated analysis of minor earthquake sequences, geological data and crustal rheology. The area has been affected by three small-magnitude seismic sequences: August 1992 (M=3.9), June 1994 (M=3.7) and October 1996 (M=4.0). The hypocentral locations and fault plane solutions of the 1996 sequence are based on original data; the seismological features of the 1992 and 1994 sequences are summarised from literature. The active WSWdipping Mt. Gorzano normal fault is interpreted as the common seismogenic structure for the three analysed sequences. The mean state of stress obtained by inversion of focal mechanisms (WSW-ENE-trending deviatoric tension) is comparable to that responsible for finite Quaternary displacement, showing that the stress field has not changed since the onset of extensional tectonics. Available morphotectonic data integrated with original structural data show that the Mt. Gorzano Fault extends for ~28 km along strike. The along-strike displacement profile is typical of an isolated fault, without significant internal segmentation. The strong evidence of late Quaternary activity in the southern part of the fault (with lower displacement gradient) is explained in this work in terms of displacement profile readjustment within a fault unable to grow further laterally. The depth distribution of seismicity and the crustal rheology yield a thickness of ~15 km for the brittle layer. An area of ~530 km2 is estimated for the entire Mt. Gorzano Fault surface. In historical times, the northern portion of the fault was probably activated during the 1639 Amatrice earthquake (I = X, M~ 6.3), but this is not the largest event we expect on the fault. We propose that a large earthquake might activate the entire 28 km long Mt. Gorzano Fault, with an expected Mmax up to 6.7.

    Beschreibung: The Campanian volcanism develops near the sea. Therefore, the geophysical study of the marine environment is a key to a better understanding of the tectonic evolution and the origin of volcanism in the area. An abundance of high quality seismic data in the marine sector, where little direct information is available, is critical to the study of Campanian volcanism. This paper concerns the reprocessing of a seismic reflection dataset acquired in Naples Bay and processed during 1973. Even though the overall data quality was high for that time, of course their acquisition technological limits have been overcome by the new processing. Our reprocessing aimed at: 1) reduction of random noise in the data; 2) removal of unwanted coherent events; 3) reduction of spatial aliasing by means of trace interpolation on Commod Shot Point (CSP) gathering; 4) improvement of resolution of the seismic wavelet with spiking deconvolution algorithms and finally 5) reposition of reflectors in their correct locations in the space-TWT domain by means of dip moveout and post-stack time migration. A comparison between the new and old data shows that the new sections are characterized by a much higher S/N ratio. Diffraction hyperbole has been collapsed. Reverberations, ghosts and multiples have been removed or greatly attenuated, especially between the reflectors of interest, allowing us to follow them with more detail and with greater continuity. Furthermore, data resolution has been boosted by the reprocessing, allowing the interpreter to evaluate reflector position and continuity in greater detail. The reinterpretation phase of such lines, that is already in an advanced stage, will therefore allow us to gain new insights into the structural setting of the bay, with the aim of exploring the connection between tectonics and volcanism.

    Beschreibung: The Gubbio Basin is a 22 km long, 4 km wide depression located within the North-Central Apennines fold-andthrust belt. The basin is bounded to the east by the Gubbio Fault, a W-dipping, normal fault dissecting a large Jurassic-Oligocene anticline. Although located along one of the main seismogenic zones of the Peninsula, both historical and instrumental is seismicity is limited with the only exception for the 29 April 1984, Ms 5.3 earthquake, which occurred about 10 km southwest of the basin. Most of the literature attributes this seismicity to the Gubbio Fault. New geomorphic and geologic investigations based on field and aerial photo surveys and DEM analyses provide new insights on the active faulting in the area and are used to infer potential seismogenic sources. Limited evidence of ongoing deformation along the surface expression of the Gubbio Fault was found, possibly because of low rates of deformation versus fast erosional processes. The western side of the basin appears to be controlled by an east-dipping normal fault, antithetic to the Gubbio Fault. Standard dislocation modeling was used to understand the role played by the Gubbio Fault and its antithetic. The Gubbio Fault was divided into a high-angle section above 3.5 km and a low-angle section between 3.5 and 6 km depth. Based on different tests we conclude that both sections of the Gubbio Fault as well as the antitethic fault contributed to the present setting of the basin. At present the antithetic fault appears to be the most effective in producing a geomorphic signature and controlling the basin width. The high-angle Gubbio Fault played a major role in the basin growth but now its activity rate appears minor. Because of the characteristics and location of the 1984 earthquake, the low-angle Gubbio Fault is assumed to be presently active and seismogenic. Based on the integration of geologic, geomorphic and seismological data we suggest that the low-angle Gubbio Fault is formed by two individual sources capable of M 5.3-5.9 earthquakes. The southern source ruptured in the 1984 earthquake while the northern source did not rupture recently nor historically.

    Beschreibung: The Po Plain is a low-relief area characterised by active shortening accommodated by blind thrust faulting. In this almost flat region depositional rates are similar to tectonic rates and deformation is seldom expressed by noticeable surface anticlines. We adopted a geomorphological approach based on the detailed analysis of the drainage network to identify the location of active thrust faults. A total of 36 anomalies represented by sudden river diversions and shifts in channel pattern were accurately mapped. After comparison with the location of subsurface buried anticlines and of historical seismicity, these anomalies could be related to a tectonic origin and included in a database. Their distribution highlights the activity of the buried outer thrust fronts of both the Southern Alps and the Northern Apennines. Among all the anomalies, we identified one related to the seismogenic source responsible for the 12 May 1802 earthquake (Me 5.7), which struck the Oglio River Valley near Soncino (Cremona). We propose that this earthquake was generated by an east-west trending, north-dipping, blind thrust fault that roots into the Alpine system. If this inference is correct, other faults along the Southern Alpine margin are potentially seismogenic.
