Description: The study explores the influence of bedload transport and flow hydraulics on the spatial and temporal dynamics of bed roughness and geometry in mountain streams. In order to investigate these complex interrelationships, each topic is treated separately. A new relative roughness coefficient, K3, is applied in the spatial and temporal roughness analyses. Detailed analyses of the highly variable natural fluid and sedimentary interactions are performed in the three mountain streams instead of using an estimated mean shear stress value to predict and describe river bed dynamics. Finally, the spatial and temporal interrelationships between roughness, geometry, flow dynamics and bedload transport are summarised in the new F.A.S.T. (Fluid And Sediment Transfer) model.

Description: Die vorliegende Arbeit "Die Entwicklung der Wirtschaftsstruktur einer traditionellen Sozialgruppe – Das Beispiel der Old Order Amish in Ohio, Indiana und Pennsylvania, USA" erwuchs aus meiner langjährigen Beschäftigung mit dieser Sozialgruppe. […]

Taylor & Francis | Business Interests and the Development of the Modern Welfare State | Routledge
    Publication Date: 2024-03-29
Description: This edited volume provides a synthesis on the question of business attitudes towards and its influence over the development of the modern welfare state. It gathers leading scholars in the field to offer both in-depth historical country case studies and comparative chapters that discuss contemporary developments. Composed of six archive-based historical narratives of business’ role in the development of social insurance programs in Germany, Finland, the Netherlands, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States, and six comparative case studies, this volume also extends the study of business to policy fields that have hitherto received little attention in the literature, such as active labor market policies, educational policies, employment protection legislation, healthcare, private pension programs and work‐family policies. It illuminates why business groups have responded so very differently to demands for increased social protection against different labor market risks in different countries and over time. This text will be of key interest to students and scholars of comparative welfare, political science, sociology, social policy studies, comparative political economy and welfare history.

Description: Sea Urchin is one of the most useful tools in developmental biology studies because this organism has the simplest kind of developmental stages. We aimed to determine developmental stages and timetable of Echinometra mathaei embryo (the species of Persian Gulf). The spawning of E. mathaei was induced by 0.5M KCl injection (1ml) into the coelomic cavity. After fertilization, embryos were placed in beakers and were incubated at 29◦C and a salinity of 39 ppt until embryos reached the pluteus stage. The developmental stages of embryos and the timing of each stage including cleavage, morulae, blastula, gastrula, prism and pluteus larvae were studied under the microscope. Our results showed that after 30 hours from fertilization time, the embryos developed to pluteus larvae. E. mathaei had the shorter development time in comparison to the other Sea Urchin species. Therefore, it may be appropriate as a model organism in biological researches.

Description: Diadema setosum (Leske, 1778), is one of the common echinoids widely distributed in the Indo-West Pacific Ocean, where it occurs from the Red Sea, Persian Gulf and the east coast of Africa to Japan, Australia and Malaysia. To investigate the developmental basis of morphological changes in embryos and larvae, we documented the ontogeny of D. setosum in a controlled laboratory condition at the Institute of Bioscience, Universiti Putra Malaysia, during July–September, 2012. Matured gametes were obtained from the adult individuals and the eggs fertilized at limited sperm concentration (10-5 dilution). The obtained embryos were then reared at 24-25oC. First cleavage (2-cell), 4-cell, 8-cell, 16-cell, 32-cell and multi-cell (Morulla) stages were attained at 01.20, 02.14, 02.44, 03.09, 03.32 and 03.54 h after fertilization, respectively. Blastulae with a mean length of 111.47±1.88 µm (mean±SD) hatched 08.45 h after sperm entry. Gastrula formed 16.36 h post-fertilization and the archenteron extended constantly, while the ectodermal red-pigmented cells migrated synchronously to the apical plate. The pluteus larva started to feed unicellular algae (Chaetoceros calcitrans) in 2 d, grew continuously, and finally attained metamorphic competence within 35 d after fertilization. Induction of metamorphosis took approximately 1 h 30 min from attachment on the substratum to the complete resorption of larval tissues and the development of complete juvenile structure with adult spines, extended tubefeet and well-developed pedicellaria, the whole event usually took place within 1 d post-settlement. The newly formed juvenile (473.16 ± 6.96 µm, n=30) with a complete adult structure then grew on coralline algae to 3-month old juvenile, which represents the “sea urchin seed” for stocking in grow-out culture. This study represents the first successful investigation on embryonic, larval and early juvenile development of D. setosum. The findings would greatly be helpful towards the development of breeding and seed production techniques for aquaculture of sea urchins.

Description: The ovigerous females of Upogebia (Upogebia assisi) were collected from Pacha (24o 50 54"N, 66o 43 E) on October 6 and 7, 1994 and 1995 respectively. They were kept for rearing under laboratory conditions at room temperature (25-32oC) in the filtered seawater with salanity of 35-36 parts per thousand (ppt) and pH 7.8-9. Development of larvae proceeds from first to three or four zoeal and postlarval stages in the duration of 8-14 days. The larval and postlarval stages of Upogebia (U. assisi) are described, illustrated and compared with the laboratory reared larval and postlarval stages of U. quddusiae by Siddiqui and Tirmizi (1995) from Pakistan and Upogebia (U. kempi) n.sp. by Shenoy (1967) from India.

Description: This study aims to investigate the relationship between the development of pharyngeal taste buds (TBs) and first feeding of Hucho taimen. Larvae were fed with live food (water flea and tubifex) for 8 weeks. TBs of larval pharynx were histologically examined using light microscopy during the rearing experiment. The results showed that the first few TBs primordia were visible within the pharynx 27 days after hatch (DAH), which coincides with the onset of feeding, and the first few TBs with open receptor areas appear 45 DAH. TBs of pharynx were well developed 76 DAH. The number and size of TBs were quantified during larval development. The average number of pharynx was 8.63±1.15, 11.29±0.50, 14.50±1.06, and 17.78±0.47 TBs at 27, 36, 45, and 76 DAH, respectively. The number of TBs increased in both the upper and lower pharynx. The ratio of height to width of TBs showed an increase tendency, ranging from 0.81 to 1.11. The height of TBs showed an increase tendency after 29 DAH during the development. However, the width of TBs exhibited a low at 35 DAH. In conclusion, the development of pharyngeal TBs coincides with the first feeding, and this should lead to a better understanding of improvement of larval rearing in H. taimen hatcheries.

Description: Scyphozoan jellyfish, or scyphomedusae, are conspicuous members of many ocean ecosystems, and have large impacts on human health and industry. Most scyphomedusae are the final stage in a complex life cycle that also includes two intermediate stages: the larval planula and benthic polyp. In species with all three life‐cycle stages, the metamorphosis of a polyp into a juvenile scyphomedusa (ephyra) is termed strobilation, and polyps can produce one ephyra (termed monodisc strobilation) or many ephyrae (termed polydisc strobilation). In contrast to species with planula, polyp and medusa stages, a handful of scyphozoan species possess modified life cycles with reduced or absent stages. The evolutionary patterns associated with strobilation and life‐cycle type have not been thoroughly investigated, and many studies of ephyra development and strobilation induction are not yet synthesized. Herein, I place the development of scyphomedusae in an evolutionary context. I first review the current evolutionary hypotheses for Scyphozoa. Next, I review what is known about scyphomedusa development across a broad diversity of species, including the first signs of strobilation, the formation of strobila segments, and the morphogenesis of ephyrae. I then review cases where the canonical scyphozoan life cycle has been modified, and take advantage of phylogenetic hypotheses to place these observations in an evolutionary context. I show that the evolution of monodisc strobilation occurred at least twice, and that the loss of intermediate life‐cycle stages occurred several times independently; by contrast, the reduction of the medusa stage appears to have occurred within a single clade. I then briefly review the major natural cues of strobilation induction. Finally, I summarize what is currently known about the molecular mechanisms of strobilation induction and ephyra development. I conclude with suggestions for future directions in the field.

Description: In this study, mouth morphological development and the importance of size of pellet food at the onset of exogenous feeding, with respect to mouth size from hatching through 60s day after hatching (DAH), were studied in larval and juvenile Vimba bream (Vimba vimba). The samples were randomly taken at 1-8 DAH, then with 2, 5, and 10 days intervals until 60 DAH (being released into the sea). Morphological examinations of mouth were followed using SEM. The length of upper and lower jaws as well as the size of mouth gap at 45° and 90° were calculated to estimate the size of pellet food. The larval mouth opened at 1 DAH and filiform papillae, and lips began to form at 2 DAH. The first taste buds developed at 3 DAH. The larval mouth developed a crescent shape at 4 DAH and the structure of papilla became clear. A number of neuromast cells were observed around the mouth at 8 DAH. Finally, it can be concluded that with the onset of exogenous feeding, Vimba vimba larvae is probably able to ingest and digest 110 µm pellet food since 8 DAH. Thus, since 20 DAH until the end of larval rearing period, formulated diets can only be used.

Description: Mutations in the fragile X mental retardation 1 gene ( FMR1 ) cause the most common inherited human autism spectrum disorder. FMR1 influences messenger RNA (mRNA) translation, but identifying functional targets has been difficult. We analyzed quiescent Drosophila oocytes, which, like neural synapses, depend heavily on translating stored mRNA. Ribosome profiling revealed that FMR1 enhances rather than represses the translation of mRNAs that overlap previously identified FMR1 targets, and acts preferentially on large proteins. Human homologs of at least 20 targets are associated with dominant intellectual disability, and 30 others with recessive neurodevelopmental dysfunction. Stored oocytes lacking FMR1 usually generate embryos with severe neural defects, unlike stored wild-type oocytes, which suggests that translation of multiple large proteins by stored mRNAs is defective in fragile X syndrome and possibly other autism spectrum disorders.
