Notes: Abstract The maximum likelihood estimation of earthquake hazard parameters (maximum regional magnitudem max, activity rate λ, and theb parameter in the Gutenberg-Richter distribution) is extended to the cases of incomplete and uncertain data. The method accepts mixed data containing only large (extreme) events and a variable quality of complete data with different threshold magnitude values. Uncertainty of earthquake magnitude is specified by two values, the lower and upper magnitude limits. It is assumed that such an interval contains the real unknown magnitude. The proposed approach allows the combination of different quality catalog parts, e.g. those where the assignment of magnitude is questionable and those with magnitudes precisely determined. As an illustration of the method, the seismic hazard analysis for western Norway and adjacent sea area (4–8°E, 58–64°N) is presented on the basis of the strongest earthquakes felt during the period 1831–1889 and three complete catalog parts, covering the period 1890–1987.

Notes: Abstract A stochastic model, nonlinear site response computations, and Monte Carlo statistics are incorporated into a process which is used to synthesize the uniform-hazard site specific response spectrum. This procedure, termed the SvE procedure, uses the Monte Carlo process for simulating the seismicity in the seismic areas neighboring the investigated site and to quantify the source parameters of the earthquakes in the simulated catalogues. Stochastic simulations are then applied to each of the listed earthquakes to generate the synthetic S-wave ground accelerations. For sites which are composed of thick layers of soil, each of the synthesized accelerograms is corrected for the nonlinear response of the site. The synthetic free surface S-wave accelerations are used to compute the response spectra for a given damping. Simple statistical analysis of the obtained spectral amplitudes is applied to determine the response spectrum where each of its determined spectral amplitudes has the same prescribed probability of being exceeded. The SvE procedure is demonstrated by determining the uniform-hazard response spectrum of an arbitrarily chosen site in Israel to which hypothetical, yet realistic, soil properties have been assigned.

Notes: Abstract On the basis of the recently proposed general fuzzy optimization [1–2], this paper investigates the multiobjective fuzzy optimum design of antenna structures, in which the weight objective, precision objective, lowest frequency objective and safety degree objective are included. This is a successful application of fuzzy optimization to large engineering structures.

Notes: Summary The effect of various levels, timing, and form of inorganic and organic nitrogenous fertilizers on the variation in nitrate content of stem bases over time was measured by means of the Nitrachek test in experiments carried out on sandy soils in Bremervörde, Germany (1985–7) and Helsinki, Finland (1987). There were good correlations between fertilizer use and nitrate content in the stem sap, and it was shown to be feasible to derive standard nitrate values which varied with growth stage. Splitting the application of N gave higher yields than applying all the N in the seedbed. The nitrate contents of tubers at harvest were correlated with the intensity of fertilizer use and was influenced by season. Soil N balances showed that splitting the N dressings reduced the soil N content more than applying all the nitrogen at the time of planting.

Notes: Abstract Finfish culture is a growing industry, and it causes a nutrient loading problem. To investigate the feasibility of an integrated culture of kelp and salmon, 15-cm long kelp (Laminaria saccharina) was grown in salmon culture effluent. The objectives were to test the effects of flow rate and kelp density on dissolved inorganic nitrogen removal (DIN), and DIN uptake and growth by the kelp. NH 4 + , NO 3 − and DIN (NH 4 + + NO 3 − ) loadings were in the ranges 6.2–25.4, 12.9–40.0, 19.7–52.7 μmol 1−1, respectively, over the experimental period. Surplus uptake of nitrogen was not evident, because the C:N ratio (10–11) was constant in all experiments. During light periods, the kelp removed from 170–339 μmol 1−1 h−1, and approximately 26–40% of the incoming DIN. The DIN uptake rate, based on daylight sampling periods, ranged between 6.1–22.5 μmol g−1 dry mass h−1. The highest-flow rate, lowest-density tank had the highest DIN uptake rate. Debris from the fish effluent settling on the kelp thalli in the low-flow rate tanks affected uptake. Mean DIN uptake rate based on 3 days of growth for all flow-density combinations ranged between 5.4–8.3 μmol g−1 dry mass h−1. The kelp utilized NH 4 + and NO 3 − equally. The growth ranged between 6.5–9% d−1. The biomass production ranged from 1–2 g per sampling period. The highest growth rate and biomass production were achieved by kelp in the highest-flow rate, lowest-density tank. Lower DIN concentrations due to higher DIN removal rates in the other tanks and light limitation due to self-shading in the high-density tanks were probably responsible for the reduced growth rate in these tanks.

Notes: Abstract The geostatistical analysis of soil liner permeability is based on 20 measurements and imprecise prior information on nugget effect, sill, and range of the unknown variogram. Using this information, membership functions for variogram parameters are assessed and the fuzzy variogram is constructed. Both kriging estimates and estimation variances are calculated as fuzzy numbers from the fuzzy variogram and data points. Contour maps are presented, indicating values of the kriged permeability and the estimation variance corresponding to selected membership values called levels.

    Notes: Abstract Applying Bittner's operational calculus we present a method to give approximate solutions of linear partial differential equations of first order $$\mathop \sum \limits_{i = 1}^n b_i \frac{{\partial u(x_1 ,x_2 , \ldots ,x_n )}}{{\partial x_i }} = f(x_1 ,x_2 , \ldots ,x_n )$$ with real coefficients and with condition $$u(x_1 ,x_2 , \ldots ,x_{n - 1,} x_n^0 ) = \varphi (x_1 ,x_2 , \ldots ,x_{n - 1,} ).$$
