    Notizen: Rate, endo/exo and diastereofacial selectivities of the Diels-Alder reaction between cyclopentadiene and ( - )-menthyl acrylate were measured in a series of organic solvents and organic-aqueous mixtures. Regression analyses show that a model with the α empirical solvent parameter accounts for most of the changes in rates and diastereofacial selectivities, whereas in the case of the endo/exo selectivity, inclusion of the π* and δ parameters is needed. Theoretical calculations carried out on the model reaction between methyl acrylate and cyclopentadiene using dielectric continuum and supermolecule models do not clearly show the effect of the different solvation mechanisms on rate. However, they agree with the above-mentioned influence of α and π* on the endo/exo and diastereofacial selectivities.

    Notizen: The enhancement factors of the 1H polarization induced in radical pairs generated by α-cleavage of 12C=O- and C=O-labelled ketones deviate from the ratios expected on the basis of the relative abundances of the respective carbon isotopomers. For dibenzyl ketone, the ratio of absolute CIDNP intensities of the 1H(13C) doublet (90% 13C=O) to the 1H(12C) singlet (10% 12C=O) was found to be 〉9:1 at 58·3 kG and 〈9:1 at 21 kG. Similar deviations were observed for other 13C labelled ketones, viz. deoxybenzoin (13C=O) and acetophenone (13C=O or 13CH3). This novel enhancement or suppression effect on the CIDNP enhancement can be ascribed to the presence of a second hyperfine coupled nucleus in the intermediate radical pair. The individual contributions of the g factor difference (Δg), the external magnetic field strength (Ho), and the hfc constants of the observed (aA) and the interacting nucleus (ax) in the enhancement-suppression are exemplified. The experimental results are consistent with theoretical calculations of the mutual effect of Δg, H0, aA and ax on the CIDNP enhancement factor of the observed nucleus.

    Notizen: Rate constants (k2) were determined for the reduction of 1-benzyl-3-cyanoquinolinium ion by phosphonate dianion in mixed solvents consisting of propan-2-ol and water. The reduction product was mostly 1-benzyl-3-cyano-1,4-dihydroquinoline with a trace of the 1,2-isomer. The solvent properties were varied by increasing the fraction of water in the mixed solvent, which increases the polarity of the solvent. Increasing the proportion of alcohol makes the solvent a better electron pair donor. The higher fraction of propan-2-ol in the mixed solvent gives rise to a substantial increase in k2. A quantitative comparison of the solvent effect on this reaction with the solvent effects on related reactions suggests a solvent Brønsted α value of 0·45. This suggests that the PO3- unit of the transition state interacts only weakly with the solvent although the final oxidized product is phosphate.

    Notizen: In constrast with recent molecular orbital calculations on the decarboxylation of O-protonated 2-oxetanone, this experimental work indicates that no decarboxylation of this cation occurs in sulphuric acid solution up to 150°C, but instead a clean isomerization to protonated acrylic acid takes place. Parallel theoretical work shows that the gas-phase model is too crude to account successfully for the experimental facts obtained in acidic media. However, the latter are well reproduced when the effect of the solvent is taken into account. The present findings do not necessarily invalidate the reaction mechanism currently accepted to explain the rate enhancement and change of stereochemistry accompanying the decarboxylation of 3,4-disubstituted 2-oxetanones under acid catalysis.

    Notizen: The enol-keto tautomerism of the Schiff bases formed by pyridoxal 5'-phosphate (PLP) with ethylenediamine (Etd) and ethylamine (Et) was studied by electrochemical and spectrophotometric methods. The spectroscopic results revealed differences between the two reactions, i.e. the enolimine/ketoenamine ratio observed in PLP-Etd mixture is higher than that of PLP-Et. The differences observed in the electroreduction mechanism and stability of the Schiff bases formed provide additional evidence for an unusually high concentration of enolimine in PLP-Etd in buffered aqueous solutions.The results are consistent with a cyclic structure such as that previously proposed by Robitaille et al. [J. Am. Chem. Soc. 111, 3034-3047 (1989)] on the basis of spectroscopic data. Protonation of the terminal amino group of the Etd moiety in the Schiff base involves the formation of the cyclic species. The low basicity of ethylenediamine favours the formation of similar concentrations of the enol and keto tautomers of the Schiff base at neutral pH. This behaviour, also observed in the Schiff base formed by PLP and polylysine, may be involved in coenzyme-protein linkages.

    Notizen: 2,2-Dimethyl-1-(p-methoxyphenyl)propyl p-nitrobenzoate (ROPNB) was subjected to solvolysis in phenol in the presence of tetrabutylammonium [carboxy-13C]-p-nitrobenzoate, in which the ‘common ion rate depression’ was confirmed to arise at the stage of the second ion-pair intermediate (Int-2). The unchanged substrate recovered at 46% reaction contained the isotopically labelled leaving group, indicating the occurrence of common ion exchange to the extent of 41-46%. In the solvolysis of the optically active substrate under identical conditions, the unchanged substrate was recovered with 51·4% racemization and ROPh was produced with slightly (1·56%) retained configuration, similarly to the solvolysis in the absence of the common ion salt. These isotope-tracer and stereochemical outcomes indicate that the common ion exchange in this solvolysis system should be attributable to the retentive nucleophilic attack on Int-2 by the common ion salt via a quadrupole (four-centre ion pair) transition state, accompanying the common ion rate depression, and they suggest that the special salt effect also should proceed by an analogous anion-exchange mechanism to that for the common ion effects.

    Notizen: The hydride transfer reactions of 4,4′-bis(dimethylaminophenyl)methane (Michler's hydride) with p-benzoquinones were studied. The rate of formation of Michler's Hydrol Blue was followed spectrophotometrically. The second-order rate constants and the activation parameters were estimated. The formation of a charge-transfer complex was observed at low temperatures. Stable and unstable paramagnetic species formed during the reactions were assigned by ESR spectroscopy. The observed kinetic behaviour and the stoichiometry were in line with those previously obtained for the systems involving Leuco Crystal Violet, Leuco Malachite Green and Leuco Bindschedler's Green. Hence the reaction is considered to proceed according to the so-far accepted multi-step mechanism. However, when tetracyano-p-quinodimethane or tetracyanoethylene was used as a π-acceptor, a comparatively stable radical ion pair was formed as a result of a one-electron transfer, followed by the gradual formation of Michler's Hydrol Blue. The kinetic behaviour and the stoichiometry of the reaction were examined, together with the enhanced kinetic effects of added triethylamine. A modified mechanism for these systems is proposed. The role of cyanomethylenes was found to be essentially different from that of p-benzoquinones, and therefore π-acceptors are divided into two groups of cyanomethylenes and p-benzoquinones.

    Notizen: Rates of hydrolysis of the vinyl ether functional groups of (Z)- and (E)-β-methoxyacrylic acid and (Z)-and (E)-β-methoxymethacrylic acid and their methyl esters were measured in aqueous perchloric acid solution. Additional rate measurements were also made for one substrate, (Z)-β-methoxymethacrylic acid, in buffer solutions down to pH 7, and a rate profile was constructed. The results show that the β-carboxy and β-carbomethoxy substituents produce strong rate retardations, ranging from 2000- to 25 000-fold, for both Z- and E-isomers in both the acrylic and methacrylic acid series. The rate profile for (Z)-β-methoxymethacrylic acid indicates that ionization of this substrate to the carboxylate ion form rises the rate of hydrolysis by a factor of 240. It is argued that this difference in reactivity of ionized and non-ionized forms of the substrate is due to conjugative and inductive effects of the substituents, rather than β-lactone formation as suggested in an earlier observation of the same phenomenon in a different system.

    Notizen: Aromatic nitration is effectively carried out by the deliberate irradiation of the charge-transfer absorption band (hvCT) of the transient electron donor-acceptor complex [ArH, NO2Y+], where NO2Y+ represents common nitrating agents. Time-resolved spectroscopy demonstrates that the charge-transfer nitration effected in this way proceeds via an electron-transfer mechanism, in which the collapse of the reactive triad, [ArH+ ·, NO2·, Y] is critical to the formation of the Wheland intermediate. Comparative product analyses of toluene and anisole nitrations together with the ‘non-conventional’ products arising from NO+ catalysis, ipso attack and addition/elimination show that the activation process leading to charge-transfer (photochemical) nitration is indistinguishable from that leading to electrophilic (thermal) aromatic nitration.

    Notizen: The stereochemistry and kinetics of the methoxide ion substitution reactions (Z)- and (E)-methylbenzohydroximoyl cyanidc [PhC(CN)=NOCH3] were investigated. The reaction of the (Z)-hydroximoyl cyanide with sodium methoxide in DMSO-methanol (9:1) solution at 44·8°C gives a mixture of methyl (Z)-O-methylbenzohydroximate [PhC(OCH3)=NOCH3] and the O-methyloxime of α-ketophenylacetamide PhC(CONH2)=NOCH3. The (E)-hydroximoyl cyanide undergoes methoxide ion-catalyzed isomerization to the E-isomer faster than it undergoes nucleophilic substitution. These observations were interpreted in terms of an addition-elimination mechanism in which the rate-limiting step is elimination of the nucleofuge (AN + DN#).

    Notizen: Nucleophilic substitution reactions of 1-(trimethylsilyl)ethyl arenesulphonates with anilines and benzylamines in acetonitrile and methanol at 65·0°C were studied. The cross-interaction constants, ρXZ, between substituents in the nucleophile (X) and leaving group (Z) are relatively small (0·10 for XC6H4NH2 in MeCN) but similar to those for other SN2 processes at a secondary carbon atom. This provides further evidence for an approximately constant, loose SN2 transition state at a secondary carbon regardless of the size of the Cα substituent. The transition-state variations with substituents X and Z are in accord with that expected from the positive ρXZ value observed: a stronger nucleophile and/or nucleofuge leads to an earlier transition state, i.e. a lower degree of bond making and breaking.

    Notizen: Imidazole (Imz)-catalysed hydrolysis of benzoate esters proceeds via the intermediate formation of N-benzoylimidazoles. This paper considers the second step of this reaction, viz., Imz-catalysed hydrolysis of N-(4-X-benzoyl)imidazoles, X = CH3, H, Cl, CN and NO2, and N-(disubstituted benzoyl)imidazoles, 2-chloro-4-nitro, 2, 4-dinitro and 3,5-dinitro, in water-acetonitrile mixtures (10% or 14%, v/v, in organic solvent). On the basis of catalytic rate constants and the kinetic solvent isotope effect, it is shown that catalysis by Imz is of the general-base type. Unexpectedly, the hydrolysis of N-(2,4-dinitrobenzoyl)imidazole was found to be slower than that of N-(4-nitrobenzoyl)imidazole. It is shown that this reactivity order is due to a combination of a steric effect and stabilization of the reactant state due to a donor-acceptor interaction between the Imz moiety and the 2,4-dinitrophenyl ring.

    Notizen: The critical micelle concentration of solutions of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide and of tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromides were determined by a kinetic method. This involved the determination of the rates of the hydroxydehalogenation of some activated aromatic substrates over a wide range of detergent concentrations. Measurements were made in solutions containing significant quantities of added hydroxyl ion and substrates which were themselves amphiphilic. Conventional methods cannot be applied with confidence to such systems. The effects of changing hydroxyl ion concentrations, added sodium bromide, changing the nature of the aromatic substrate (whether neutral or charged), the identity of the micellar counterion and the temperature were investigated. It was wound that added bromide or hydroxyl ions resulted in a lower CMC whereas increased temperature led to an increase in the CMC. The nature of the micellar counterion (Br, F, OH, SO4) had little effect on the CMC. The presence of a charged aromatic substrate led to a considerable lowering of the CMC, whereas the neutral aromatic substrate used showed very little effect.

    Notizen: Kinetic studies on the reversible reactions of benzyl bromides with N, N-dimethylanilines were carried out for both the forward (kf) and reverse (kr) directions. The equilibrium constants, K were calculated using the ratio kf/kr and the equilibrium cross-interaction constant, ρeXY was determined. The ρeXY value was shown to represent a maximum intensity of interactions between substituents X and Y through covalent bonds within a molecule. The normalized values of ρX (ρnuc) and ρXY indicate that in the transition state the fractional development or loss of polar and resonance interactions in the benzyl system are imbalanced or non-perfectly synchronized. In the forward reaction the fractional loss of resonance interaction becomes enhanced, whereas in the reverse reaction the fractional development of resonance interaction lags behind the corresponding changes of polar interactions by ca 45%.

    Notizen: The acid-catalysed solvolysis of 9-(2-phenoxy-2-propyl)fluorene in mixtures of water with acetonitrile or methanol at 25°C provides 9-(2-hydroxy-2-propyl)fluorene, 9-(2-propenyl)fluorene, and 9-(2-acetamido-2-propyl)fluorene or 9-(2-methoxy-2-propyl)fluorene, respectively. The overall kinetic deuterium isotope effects for the reactions of the hexadeuterated analogue 9-(1,1,1,3,3,3-2H6)-9-(2-phenoxy-2-propyl)fluorene in 90 vol.% acetonitrile in water were measured as (kEH + kSH)/(kED6 + kSD6) = 1·54 ± 0·05, which is composed of the isotope effect kSH/kSD6 = 1·4 ± 0·1 for formation of the substitution products and kEH/kED6 = 4·0 ± 0·2 for production of 9-(2-methoxy-2-propyl)fluorene. Similar isotope effects were measured in other solvent mixtures. The results strongly indicate a branched mechanism involving rate-limiting formation of a common carbocation-molecule pair (with a secondary isotope effect of 1·54), which either undergoes nucleophilic attack by a solvent molecule (with a secondary isotope effect of ca 1), or is dehydronated (isotope effect ca 2·8) by the leaving group or by the solvent. The ion-molecule pair shows very low selectivities. Thus, in 50 vol.% acetonitrile in water, an acetonitrile molecule is as efficient as a water molecule as a nucleophile towards the ion-molecule pair, kMeCN/kHOH ≥ 1 (ratio of second-order rate constants). The discrimination between methanol and water is anomalously small, kMeOH/kHOH = 0·7.

    Notizen: The title sulphenamides were pyrolysed in a stirred-flow reactor at temperatures of 310-410°C, pressures of 8-15 Torr and residence times of 0·4-2 s using toluene as the carrier gas. N-(tert-Butylthio)allylamine formed 73 ± 4% isobutene, 23 ± 3% propene and N-allylthiohydroxylamine. The first-order rate coefficients for the formation of isobutene and propene, respectively, followed the Arrhenius equations kC4(s-1) = 1012·52 ± 0·36 exp(-163 ± 5 kJ mol-1 RT) and kC3(s-1) = 1010·99 ± 0·29 exp(-151 ± 4 kJ mol-1 RT) N-(tert-Butylthio)diethylamine gave 97 ± 1% isobutene, 1·9 ± 0·4% isobutane and N,N-diethylthiohydroxylamine. The first-order rate coefficients for isobutene elimination followed the Arrhenius equation k(s-1) = 1013·45 ± 0·24 exp(-164 ± 3 kJ mol-1 RT). The formation of the products is interpreted in terms of an elimination reaction with a unimolecular, four-centered, cyclic transition state. The reactivity of these sulphenamides was found to be much higher than that of previously studied alkyl or aryl tert-butyl sulphides and disulphides.

    Notizen: The reactivity of 1,3-dihaloadamantanes with diphenylphosphide ions (Ph2P-) in liquid ammonia was studied. 1,3-Dichloroadamantane (1a), 1-bromo-3-chloroadamantane (1b) and 1,3-dibromoadamantane (1c) reacted with Ph2P- ions under photostimulation by the SRN1 mechanism. Irradiation of 1c without Ph2P- ions gave no reaction (〈5%). Three products were found: 1,3-bis(diphenyphosphinyl)adamantane (2), (3-X-1-adamantyl)diphenylphosphine (X = Cl, 3a; X = Br, 3b) and 1-adamantyldiphenylphosphine (4). Compounds 2 and 4 were formed by intramolecular electron transfer (ET) of the radical anion 3a-· (3b-·); whereas 3a (3b) were formed by intermolecular ET of this radical anion to the substrates. It was observed that the product distribution depends on the substrate and reaction conditions.

    Notizen: Transition structures for the Diels-Alder reactions of 1,3,4-oxadiazole with ethylene, acrylonitrile, maleonitrile, fumaronitrile, and 1,1-dicyanoethylene were located with ab initio molecular orbital calculations with the RHF/3-21G theoretical model. The activation energies were calculated by single-point calculations with the RHF/6-31G* and MP2/6-31G* theory levels on the RHF/3-21G geometries. Geometries of two transition structures and the corresponding reactants were generated at the MP2/6-31G* and the energies evaluated at the MP3/6-31G* level. The values obtained are comparable to those generated by MP2/6-31G*//3-21G. The asynchronicity of the transition structures follow the same trend as the corresponding all-carbon Diels-Alder reactions with buta-1,3-diene and cyclopentadiene, but the activation energies are almost in opposite correlation. This behavior is explained by the oxadiazole nitrogen lone pair repulsion with the π-orbitals of the nitrile groups.

    Notizen: The reaction of 2-(p-nitrophenyl)ethyl bromide with hydroxide ion was studied at 50 and 25°C in the presence of cationic chemodegradable surfactants, i.e. [2-alkyl(1,3-dioxolan-4-yl)methyl] trimethylammonium bromides Ia-c (alkyl: a = n-C9H19, b = n-C11H23, c = n-C13H27). The kinetic data were interpreted with the pseudo-phase ion-exchange (PIE) formalizm at both temperatures. The results indicate that the major source of rate enhancement is the increased reactant concentration in the small micellar reaction volume. The surfactant stability in micellar conditions was probed by means of a hydrolysis reaction of the surfactant 1,3-dioxolane ring. The kinetics of acid hydrolysis of Ia-c micelles, as a result of specific hydronium ion concentration, is one order of magnitude smaller than that of unaggregated systems.

First-order rate constants go through maxima with increasing [surfactant]. The rate - surfactant profiles are fitted quantitatively in terms of a kinetic model that treats the distribution of OH- between aqueous and micellar pseudo-phases in terms of coulombic and non-coulombic ion-micelle interactions. Second-order rate constants at the micellar surface are lower than in water by factors that range from 0.035 for 1a to 0.7 for 1c. The thiophenyl derivative (2b) is more reactive than the corresponding phenoxy derivative (1a) and it is more reactive than the corresponding thioethyl derivative (2a). Parathion (3) is the least reactive substrate in both water and micelles.

    Notizen: Carbon and deuterium kinetic isotope effects (KIEs) on the isomerization of methyl isocyanide were calculated by using the geometries and force fields obtained with MNDO, AM1 and PM3 Hamiltonians. These theoretical KIE values were compared with the corresponding experimental values. None of the hamiltonians used proved to be superior to any of the others. The best agreement for the carbon isotope effect was obtained by using the PM3 method; however, the deuterium isotope effect obtained by this method gave the poorest fit to the experimental data. The opposite is true when the MNDO Hamiltonian was used.

    Notizen: Core-electron energies for sulphur in a series of 2-substituted thiophenes have been used to investigate the relationship between electronic substituent parameters as developed by Taft and Topsom and by Charton. Initial- and final-state energies are analysed in terms of familiar substituent effects, such as field, delocalization and polarizability. The results show that the data correlate equally well with both sets of parameters and that there are many common features between the two methods. Both agree that resonance delocalization contributes significantly to the initial state, but has virtually no effect on the final state. In connection with this investigation we have also correlated the parameters for 31 substituents that are parameterized in the two approaches. The results of this more general study indicate some real differences between these and suggest that neither of the parameterizations incorporates all the electronic effects.

The rates and product distribution of the reaction between OH- ion and CCHP are very similar to those previously obtained with alkyl-substituted 4-cyanopyridinium ions. The effect of hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide micelles on the rate and product distribution of CCHP indicated that the cyanopyridinium ring of this compound is distal to the surface of the micelle. CCHP constitutes a probe for ionic composition in the vicinity of positively charged micelles.

    Notizen: Thermodynamic proton ionization constants, TpKa, of several 4-acyl-substituted pyrazol-5-ones [acyl = trifluoroacetyl (HPMTFP), acetyl (HPMAP), hexanoyl (HPMHP)] were determined in various dioxane-water mixtures at 25 and 35 ± 0.1°C. The TpKa values were determined by glass-electrode potentiometry and refined by using the extensive weighted least-squares FORTRAN program TPKA. Both extrapolation and leastsquares methods were used to obtain TpKa values in pure water (0%). All three acyl derivatives are weak monoprotic acids with TpKa values between 2.5 and 3.9, following the order HPMTFP 〈 HPMAP ≤ HPMHP. The TpKa values do not vary linearly with the reciprocal of the dielectic constant of the medium; however, a plot of TpKa versus the mole fraction of dioxane, n2, is linear at a given temperature. Values of standard free energy (ΔG°), enthalpy (ΔH°) and entropy (ΔS°) changes associated with their protolytic equilibria were also calculated. Temperature, medium and substituent effects are briefly discussed.

Differences in the effects of the aromatic, six- or five-membered heteroaromatic rings are discussed. Spectral analysis enables Z/E configurations to be assigned with confidence and conformational preferences to be qualitatively deduced. Some interesting solvent effects were also observed.

    Notizen: The Z/E photoisomerization of a series of 5-arylmethylenehydantoins and a series of 5-pyridylmethylenehydantoins by direct irradiation in methanol or ethanol solvent was investigated. The isomeric ratios at the photostationary state are dependent on the excitation wavelength and are related to the relative absorption coefficients of the two isomers. Measurements of quantum yields show the absence of quenching effects by oxygen or azulene, suggesting that triplet states either are not involved or are too short-lived for quenching to be observed. Preparative photoisomerization provides a route to the isomer which is not isolated or obtained only as a minor product by the usual method of synthesis.

    Notizen: The equilibrium acidities, pKHA, of 18 dialkyl malonates, five alkyl 2-cyanoacetates and nine malononitriles and the oxidation potentials of their conjugate anions, EOX(A-), were measured in dimethyl sulfoxide solution. The homolytic bond dissociation enthalpies (BDEs) of their acidic C-H were estimated by combining their pKHA and EOX(A-) values. The pKHA values of the dialkyl malonates were found to increase from 15·9 to 16·4 to 18·4 as the dialkyl groups were changed from dimethyl to diethyl to di-tert-butyl, but the BDEs of the acidic C-H bonds remained constant [95·3±0·3 kcal mol-1] (1 kcal = 4·184 kJ). Introduction of methyl, ethyl, isopropyl and tert-butyl groups into the 2-position of diethyl malonate caused the equilibrium acidities to increase by 2·0, 2·4, 3·8 and 8·0 pKHA units, respectively, and the BDE values to decrease by 4·4, 3·7, 2·5 and 0·8 kcal mol-1, respectively. Introduction of a phenyl group into the 2-position of diethyl malonate had no effect on the acidity, but weakened the acidic C-H bond by 10 kcal mol-1. The effects on acidity and BDE of introducing 3,4,5- (MeO)3C6H2CO, CF3, Me3N+, c-C5H10N, p-MeC6H4, p-NO2C6H4, PhO, F and c-C5H5N+ groups into the 2-position of diethyl malonate were also examined.

    Notizen: The relative thermodynamic stabilities of the title compounds were determined by iodine catalyzed chemical equilibration in cyclohexane solution. The main point of interest was a determination of the thermodynamic stability of the —O—C=C—O— moiety found in the exocyclic isomers, i.e. the stabilizing effect of a MeO group on the olefinic linkage of 2-methylenetetrahydrofuran. All three isomeric compounds have essentially similar enthalpy values, which, in comparison with some previous thermodynamic data, shows that the double bond stabilization energy of the MeO group in the exo isomers is only ca 3 kJ mol-1. The entropy difference between the geometrical isomers is negligible, whereas the endo isomer is favoured by an entropy contribution of ca 9 J K-1 mol-1.

    Notizen: A new approach to the long-standing problem of interrelating meta and para substituent constants is presented. An analysis of the unified σ0-scale shows that the interrelation between σ40 and σ40/σ30 can be modelled by a pair of conjugate rectangular hyperbolae, one for normal (n) and the other for special (s) substituents. The latter are characterized by a lone electron pair in the first atom. The equations σ4n0 (σ4n0 - γ0)/(σ4n0 - 2γ0) = λ0 σ3n0 and σ4s0 = γ0 + λ0 σ3s0 are derived and discussed in terms of Taft's separation of mesomeric and non-mesomeric effects. Asymptotic values λ = 0.960 γ = -0.225 were obtained by non-linear least rectangles fitting. A nonnegligible mesomeric contribution to σ0 constants for normal substituents is predicted by the hyperbolic model. The present results are at variance with Exner's analysis of the meta-para interrelationship in benzene compounds with normal substituents. This divergence is ascribed to opposite views concerning the role of the π-inductive effect.

    Notizen: On irradiation on a dry silica gel surface, 2-(N, N-dialkylamino)ethyl 3-benzoylacrylates undergo selective E-Z isomerization. Competing processes, such as remote-hydrogen abstraction via a charge-transfer state, with the photoisomerization in solution are completely suppressed on the surface. The yield of the Z - from the E- isomer increases with increase in the coverage of the E-isomer on the surface, reaching a limiting value. Thermal isomerization of the Z- to the E- isomer occurs easily on the silica gels surface when the alkyl group on the nitrogen atom is small. Benzoylacrylates without any amino group also undergo selective photoisomerization.

    Notizen: Slight structural moiecular variations are known to affect different properties of compounds. In solution, different solute-solvent interactions are known also to alter the properties of numerous compounds. Quantitative structure-activity relationships (QSAR) are used regularly to analyze and predict the variations of different properties of compounds that are caused by structural variations and significant solute-solvent interactions. The relative basicities of n-propylamine, dipro;ylamine and tripropylamine were determined in nine different solvents from potentiometric titrations. QSAR that were developed from these experimental basicity values were used to evaluate the type and significance of the solute-solvent interactions. The important interactions that influence basicity variations for the propylamines studied are dipolarity-polarizability interaction between the solute and the solvent and hydrogen bonds from the propylammonium ions to basic solvents. The role of hydrogen bonds from the propylamines to acidic solvents is minor.

    Notizen: Substituent effects were measured for the reactions of substituted benzaldehydes with allytributylin (1) and allyltriethyllead (2) reagents in the presence of BF3.OEt2 in CH2Cl2. The Hammett p values were small and positive at 25 °C and negative at -78 °C for both 1 and 2. These could be interpreted in terms of the contribution of electrophilic complexation between the aldehyde function and BF3 as a rate-limiting step. A large negative p value was observed for the complex-formation equilibria between substituted benzaldehydes and BF3.

    Notizen: The associationof C6H5O with NO was studied with the cavity-ring-down method by directly monitoring the decay of C6H5O in the presence of varying, excess amounts of NO. The biomolecular rate constant determined in the temperature range 297-373 K can be effectively rate constant determined in the temperature range 297-373 K can be effectively represented by k1 = 10- 12 · 12 ± 0.24e (194±185)/r cm3 molecule-1 with a negative activation energy of 0.8 kcal mol-1 (1 kcal = 4.184 kJ). In order to understand better the mechanism of the reaction, ab initio molecular orbital calculations were also carried out at the MP4(SDQ)/6-31G* level of theory using the HF optimized geometries. The molecular structues and energetics of five C6H5N1O2 isomers were calculated. Among them, the most likely and stable association product, phenyl nitrite (C4H5ONO), was found to be 17 kal mol-1 below the reactants, C6H5O + NO. Combining the measured rate constant and the calculated equilibrium constant for the association reaction, C6H5O + NO = C6H5ONO the rate constant for the unimolecular decomposition of C6H5ONO was obtained as k-1 = 4.6 × 1015E-8580/T s-1. The relatively large frequency factor suggests that a loose transition state was involved in the reaction, akin to those of its alkyl analogs (RONO, R = CH3, C2H5, etc.).

    Notizen: The kinetics of the Menshutkin reaction between triethylamine and iodoethane was studied at 313 K in seven primary and secondary alkanols. An accurate conductimetric method was employed to obtain second-order rate constants at pressures of 0·1-200 MPa. Volumes and isothermal compressions of activation were calculated by different model-based equations which are compared. Activation volumes at 0·1 MPa are in the range -26 to -33 cm3 mol-1. Procedures for dissecting intra- and intermolecular contributions to the volume of activation are discussed. A clear dependence of model parameters on the solvent volumetric properties was found.

    Notizen: The reaction of 2-(p-nitrophenyl)ethyl bromide with hydroxide ion was studied in oil-in-water (o/w) microemulsions at 50°C. The octane-in-water microemulsion systems were stabilized by chemodegradable cyclic acetal-type cationic surfactants as [(2-alky-1,3-dioxolan-4-yl)methyl]trimethylammonium bromides Ia-c (alkyl: a = n-C9H19; b = C11H23; c = C13H27) and butan-1-ol as co-surfactant. The rate constants were also determined in the corresponding aqueous micelles and in water. The hydrolytic lability of Ia-c in the microemulsion systems was achieved at 50°C by acid hydrolysis of the 1,3-dioxolane ring. Systematic synthetic studies of the dehydrobromination were performed in order to develop a preparative approach for the product separation without unfavourable process such as foaming and emulsification.

    Notizen: The hydrogen bond complexes between metyrapone [methyl-1,2-di(3-pyridyl)propan-1-one] and hydroxylic proton donors (phenols, water) were investigated by infrared spectroscopy. The thermodynamic and spectroscopic data determined in carbon tetrachloride suggest that the nitrogen atom of the pyridine ring A [bonded to the C(CH3)2 group] is the main hydrogen bond interaction site. The data are compared with di-2-pyridylglyoxal complexes where the hydrogen bonds are formed on the oxygen atom of the carbonyl function. In the solid adduct of metyrapone with HCl, protonation takes place on the two nitrogen atoms of the pyridine rings. The data from this work are compared with those from chemical oxidation, which leads predominantly to the formation of mono-N-oxide A and di-N-oxide.

    Notizen: The dependence of the amount of water bound to human serum albumin (HSA) suspended in water-dioxane mixtures vs the equilibrium water concentration in the liquid phase was determined by the Fisher method at 298 K. The Langmuir model was used in order to describe the isotherm of the sorption of water by HSA at low water concentrations in the solvent. The calculated equilibrium constant of water adsorption (3.8 ± 0.6 l mol-1) is in good agreement with the adsorption constant obtained earlier from calorimetric data. The comparison of the determined isotherm of water sorption by HSA with the reported enthalpies of suspension formation showed that at low water concentrations in the solvent, water sorption is the only process contributing to the heat effects of the formation of the ‘protein + liquid’ heterogeneous system. From this comparison, the enthalpy of water adsorption by HSA was evaluated as -11.9 ± 1.7 kJ mol-1. At higher water concentrations in the solvent the amount of water adsorbed by HSA increased considerably. This increase in the amount of water on HSA at water activities above 0.5 is assumed to be due to the enlargement of the protein surface area.

    Notizen: Conformational preferences have been measured for 4-X-cyclohexenes (X = Br, Cl, CHO, COOH) in a series of solvents with increasing polarity. The conformational equilibrium exhibits a very weak solvent dependence. ΔG varies at most by 0·25 kcal mol-1 (1 kcal = 4·184 kJ) shifting from a non-polar mixture (CS2-CDCI3) to highly polar (CD3)2SO. The reaction field theory was used to calculate the variation of ΔG with solvent polarity. The calculated solvent shifts δΔG are small and in agreement with the values determined experimentally.

    Notizen: The superaromaticity concept is examined and developed, taking into account what is known about aromaticity. Three new hardness indices indices are defined, and shown to be excellent parameters for characterizing superaromaticity. High superaromaticity indicates significant global annulenoid conjugation relative to local benzenoid conjugation in circularly annealed benzenoid molecules. Kekulene, coronene and corannulene tetraanion all are predicted to be superaromatic. The prediction for the corannulene tetraanion strongly supports the “annulene-within-an-annulene” structure derived from NMR data.

    Notizen: Reactions of diazomethane with butanol, allyl alcohol and β- and γ-halo alcohols led to efficient methylation (giving the corresponding methyl ethers) with the use of a proton-exchanged X-type zeolite compared with H2SO4. The reactions with propylene and isobutylene glycols using the zeolite provided regioselective methylation of the primary OH rather than the secondary or tertiary OH, whereas regioselectivity was not observed in the reactions using H2SO4. The reactions with 2-aminoethanol and 2-mercaptoethanol showed high chemoselective S-methylation and N-monomethylation, respectively, in the presence of the zeolite instead of H2SO4. The mechanism for the reactions is proposed to involve acid-base bifunctional catalysis of the zeolite in which the acidic site reacts with diazomethane to form its conjugate acid, and the nucleophilicity of OH and SH groups is enhanced by the interaction of the basic site with the proton of the groups.

    Notizen: The visible spectrum of di-tert-butylstilbazolium betaine (DTBSB) was recorded in eight simple amides. The appearance of a ‘coarse’ structure in the main absorption band is due to the shielding effect of the tert-butyl groups, which hinder the approach of the solvent. Since this structure disappears in formamide, it is concluded that this solvent associates through its NH to the carbonyl group of DTBSB. For the other amides, there is a clear relationship between the steric effect, for both the N- and C-substituents, of the solvent-solute hydrogen bond association and the structure of the visible band.

    Notizen: The title compounds (1 and 3, respectively) were studied by X-ray crystal structure analysis. Both are trigonal, space group R3, with lattice parameters a = 27.718(6), c = 8.161(2) Å, Z = 3 and a = 31.267(7), c = 6.560(2), Z = 18, respectively. The dodecamethyl compound 1 is isomorphous with its parent hexakis(4-benzylphenoxy)benzene (2), a known host. However, ‘collapse’ along the c-axial direction has occurred such that the appreciable clathrate cavity of 2 has been replaced by only a very small residual void for 1. Phenol 3 does not pack in discrete [OH]6 hydrogenbonded hexamers; instead, molecules are assembled in infinite chains, linked by OH…O hydrogen bonds of length 2.735(3) Å, which are propagated along threefold screw axes. A variable-temperature CPMAS NMR study of sidechain aryl group rotation in 1 gives a value ΔG≠ of 14.0 ± 0.7 kcal mol-1 (at 42 °C) for the (crystallographically unique) para -disubstituted ring, a similar 14 kcal mol-1 free energy barrier being found hindering rotation of this ring, and of the outer phenyl ring of 1, at 9°C.

The first-order rate constants for the pyramidal inversion of (S)-(-)Se-1 and (R)-(+)Se-1 were determined and the activation enthalpies and entropies were calculated. A fairly large difference was found in the activation parameters between optically active (S)-(-)Se-1 and (R)-(+)Se-1, i.e. a large negative activation entropy was obtained in the case of (R)-(+)Se-1.

    Notizen: Photoelectron spectra of trans-bicyclo[4.1.0]hept-3-ene and two methyl derivatives, 1-3, and cis-bicyclo[4.1.0]hept-3-ene and three of its derivatives, 4-7, were measured. Ab initio molecular orbital (MO) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed on these compounds. By combining the results of the experimental and computational trends, it was established that the highest occupied molecular orbitals (HOMOs) of 1-3 are the ‘twist’ bent σ bond at the fusion between the two rings whereas for 4-7 the HOMOs are the π orbital in the six-membered ring. The DFT ordering is the same as that suggested by the photoelectron spectra whereas at the MO level the HOMO always corresponds to the π orbital. The intensities of the photoelectron spectra were calculated at the DFT level and good qualitative agreement with experiment was found.

    Notizen: A transition structure for the syn and anti attack of formonitrile oxide on both cis-3,4-dichlorocyclobutene and norbornene was obtained using HF/3-21G method. These calculations correctly predict dominance of the syn attack in the reaction of dichlorocyclobutene and 100% syn selectivity, with respect to the methano bridge, in the reaction of norbornene. Analysis of the activation energy shows that the inherent facial bias of dichlorocyclobutene is reflected, at the transition state, in a complex way in the deformation energy of both dichlorocyclobutene and formonitrile oxide and in the interaction energy between them. With norbornene the out-of-plane deformation energy of the olefinic hydrogens clearly emerges as the major factor in controlling facial selectivity.

    Notizen: The recently developed ‘ligated’ technique has proved to be very successful in promoting living anionic polymerization of (meth) acrylic ester monomers. The efficient ligands discovered to date include μ, σ and μ-σ dual types. The roles of these ligands in the control of livingness and stereoregularity of anionic polymerization of (meth) acrylates are discussed in detail. There is convincing evidences that both ligation thermodynamics (electron density redistribution and steric hindrance in the formed active complex) and kinetics (how fast and in which way ligation occurs) are very critical in promoting the livingness. Moreover, steric hindrance appears to be a determining factor maintaining the process ‘living’ under more demanding conditions.

    Notizen: The tetrabutylammonium salts of CH-acidic compounds (malonic acid diesters and diamides, nitropropane, phenylacetic and phenylpropionic acid esters and 9-ethyltfuorene) serve as inexpensive initiators for the anionic polymerization of acrylates and methacrylates at room temperature. Molecular weights of 1500-25,000 can be reached, the molecular weight distributions being fairly narrow (D = 1·1-1·4 in optimized cases). Side-reactions as monitored by GC analyses include backbiting and Hofmann elimination, which means that the process is not a true living polymerization. The x-ray structural analyses of the tetrabutylammonium salts of phenylacetic and 2-phenylpropionic and 2-phenylbutyric acid esters show that anions and cations interact with one another via hydrogen bonding. Therefore, the initiators cannot be considered to be naked anions, a conclusin which very likely also applies to the growing polymer chain end during polymerization.

    Notizen: The mechanism of biologically important (net) hydride transfer from NADH or NADPH to a substrate has been discussed from the viewpoint of physical organic chemistry. It is emphasized that the (net) hydride transfer involves an electron-transfer complex as an intermediate of the reaction. The intermediate plays a crucial role in determining the stereochemistry of the reaction. Orientation of a dipolar functional group such as carbonyl or sulphinyl determines the molecular face for complexation, and consequently defines the face of reaction. Steric bulkiness is of secondary importance in defining the face of reaction. The mechanism observed is called non-steric stereochemistry. Molecular interactions observed in organic reactions and discussed herein are found to be closely related to those observed in biological reactions.

    Notizen: 1H, 13C, 15N and 17O NMR spectra of N-phenylacetamide (acetanilide) and 21 ortho-substituted acetanilides were measured and assigned. The observed NMR parameters are related to the Hammett substituent parameters and conformational characteristics of the acetamido moiety estimated by molecular mechanics calculations. Significant relationships were found for the 13C NMR chemical shifts of C-5 (para to substituent) and the direct spin-spin coupling constant, 1J(C, H), of C-3 (ortho to substituent) with Hammett substituent parameters. For 15N NMR chemical shifts of the amido nitrogen, no general correlation with the Hammett substituent parameters was found. The interactions between functionalities contiguous to the carbonyl group and the amino nitrogen in acetanilides are effectively hampered owing to the increased twist angle between the planes containing the phenyl ring and the H-N-C fragment in derivatives bearing bulky ortho substituents. Especially in ortho-halogen-substituted derivatives the 15N NMR chemical shift of the amino nitrogen is very clearly related to the twist angle between the phenyl ring and H-N-C fragment. For 17O NMR chemical shifts of the acetamido carbonyl, the observed variations can be related to the steric inhibition of resonance between the benzene ring and the acetamido group.

    Notizen: The reductive cyclization of several 2-nitroarylamides was studied by radiolytic reduction, examining the effects of substituents on the nitrophenyl ring and on the leaving aniline and variations in the nature of the link between the nitrophenyl ring and the leaving aniline. The stoichiometry of the reduction and the identification of N-hydroxylactam and aniline products suggest that the major initial products of such a reduction of the nitroamides are the corresponding hydroxylamines. Under anaerobic conditions, cyclization via the hydroxylamines was considerably faster (up to 160-fold) than via the corresponding amines under comparable conditions, but was similarly influenced by changes in geometry. Unlike cyclization via the amines, rates of cyclization via the hydroxylamines were sensitive to substitution on the leaving aniline, being accelerated by electron-withdrawing groups. The rate-determining step in the cyclization of the hydroxylamines is proposed to be breakdown of the tetrahedral intermediate.

    Notizen: A series of mono-, bis- and tetra-acridine ligands were prepared and their effects on the higher order structure of DNA were studied by dynamic fluorescence microscopy. The single-crystal structure of the bis-acridine derivative N-[2-(dimethylamino) ethyl]-4-[2-(9-acridinylamino)benzamido]-2-(9-acridinylamino)benzamide trihydrochloride (4) was determined, and shows that the molecule is sufficiently flexible to fold into an intramolecular stacking interaction in the crystal, supporting earlier hydrodynamic evidence that this compound can bis-intercalate into DNA forming a single base pair (bp) sandwich complex. The corresponding tetra-acridine analogue 1,11-bis[4-[2-(9-acridinylamino)benzamido]-2-(9-acridinylamino)phenyl]-1,11-dioxo-6-methyl-2,6,10-triazaundecane pentahydrochloride (6) was synthesized, and dynamic fluorescence microscopy was used to study the effects of 4 and 6 on the higher order structure of large T4 DNA molecules (166 kbp), by measuring the average long-axis legth (persistence length, l) of the complexes. The mono-intercalating ligand acridine orange (5) increase l, whereas the bisintercalating diacridine 4 has no apparent effect and the putative multi-intercalating tetracridine derivative 6 decreases l by compacting the higher order DNA structure. These results demonstrate the usefulness of the technique for directly observing ligand-DNA complexes, and show that ligands with suitably positioned multiple binding sites can influence the higher order structure of DNA (and thus possibly gene expression).

For all phosphoryl and carbonyl substrates a strong high - field shift of the P=O and C=O signals was observed on the addition of a salt; no shift was observed, however, for the OH group signal, indicating that no chelation takes place in the hydroxyphosphoryl (or hydroxycarbonyl) derivatives. For 2-hydroxy-3-benzoylpropylphosphonic diester the 17O NMR studies, together with conformational analysis based on the 1H spectroscopy, demonstrated the chelation of a metal ion by the P=O and C=O functions (fermation of an eight-membered cyclic structure) with the OH group involved in the intramolecular hydrogen bonding, but not in the complexation to the metal ion.

    Notizen: Semi-empirical SCF calculations using the AM1 Hamiltonian were shown to account for the Hammett σ constants and other properties of a representative series of 22 monosubstituted benzenes in terms of the atomic charges at the ipso, ortho, meta and para positions. The trends of the correlations with experimental σ constants were found to follow the normal expectations of physical organic chemistry. Additional support for the AM1 charge distributions was obtained in correlations with the 13C chemical shifts of 12 of the test molecules. On the other hand, no correlations were found between σ constants and computed force constants for bending peripheral H atoms out of the plane of the aromatic ring, supporting the view that Hammett σ constants reffect charge distributions and not secondary effects expressed in the stiffness of bonds.

    Notizen: Octaethyltetrathiaporphyrin dication, OTP2+, is electrochemically reduced by two successive electron-transfer processes to OPT0. OPT2+ forms intermolecular complexes with a series of π-donors. The association constants of the resulting complexes are controlled by the oxidation potentials of the π-donors and solvent properties. OTP2+ was incorporated into a Nafion membrane cast on a Pt electrode. Formation of OTP2+-π-donor complexes in the polymer membrane was followed by electrochemical and spectroscopic means. The association constants of the OTP2+-π-donor complexes in the Nafion membrane exhibit lower values than a homogeneous phase owing to the high ionic strength in the polyelectrolyte.

    Notizen: The o-iodosobenzoate (IBA-)-catalyzed hydrolysis of the following esters was studied spectrophotometrically: 4-nitrophenyl 4-X-benzoate (series I, a-e, X = CH3, H, Cl, CN, NO2), 4-Y-phenyl 4-nitrobenzoate (series II, a-d, Y = CH3, H, Cl, CN), 2,4-dinitrophenyl 4-X-benzoate (series III, b-e, X = H, Cl, CN, NO2) and 4-Y-phenyl 2,4-dinitrobenzoate (series IV, a-e, Y = CH3, H, Cl, CN, NO2). Direct detection of a reaction intermediate, viz 1-(4-nitrobenzoyloxy)-1,2-benzodoxol-3(1H)-one, the absence of (general base) catalysis by the leaving group, the small kinetic solvent isotope effect and the fast catalyst ‘turnover’ show that the mechanism of catalysis by IBA- is nucleophilic. Catalytic rate constants, activation parameters and application of the Hammett equation show the following mechanistic features: the first step of the reaction, i.e. that leading to the formation of the above-mentioned intermediate is irreversible, the leaving group is the phenol and the rate-limiting step is the collapse of the tetrahedral intermediate that is formed by attack of IBA- on the ester. A comparison of the results of hydrolysis by IBA- and by imidazole (Imz) revealed that IBA- and Imz differ in their sensitivity toward an ester structure and, for the same ester series, IBA- is a much more efficient catalyst. The reasons for the higher catalytic activity of IBA- include nucleophilicity enhancement due to the α-effect, a smaller influence of steric effects and a more favorable entropy of activation.

    Notizen: The octaethyltetrathiaporphyrin dication, OTP2+, forms 1:1 intermolecular donor-acceptor complexes with NiII-, VIVO- and FeIII-octaethylporphyrins. The association constants of the complexes are governed by the oxidation potential of the metallo-octaethylporphyrins and by secondary electrostatic interactions. Octaethylporphyrin, H2OEP, forms intermolecular complexes with OTP2+. Kinetic analyses of the formation of the various complexes revealed the formation of a primary complex exhibiting the stoichiometry (OTP2+)2(H2OEP). This intermolecular complex transforms into a thermodynamically stabilized intermolecular assembly with a stoichiometry corresponding to (OTP2+)4H2OEP. The activation barrier associated with the conversion of the primary complex to the thermodynamically stabilized assembly is Ea = 16·5 kcal mol-1 (1 kcal = 4·184 kJ). The association constant of the complex (OTP2+)2(H2OEP) is K1 = 1·3 × 1010 M-2 and the equilibrium constant between the two coexisting intermolecular complexes (OTP2+)4(H2OEP) and (OTP2+)2(H2OEP) is K2 = 7·4.

    Notizen: The original Hammett equation, Δ = ρσ, is transformed in a constrained tetralinear relationship where each straight line with variable intercept term correlates one of the following four groups or subsets of dipolar substituents: normal and special substituents (depending on the absence or the presence of a lone electron pair in their atom next to the aromatic ring) and, in each of these classes, separating meta and para derivatives. There are a total of four fitting parameters in the resulting plurilinear Hammettian transformation (PHT) from which the statistically corrected parameters λ and γ are derived; λ and γ are the asymptotic values in a hyperbolic model for the representation of Δ4 vs Δ4/Δ3. This meta-para interrelationship is assumed to hold in the absence of through-resonance effects which, in turn, are allowed for by the use of alternative sigma scales of substituent constants. By applying the PHT to a large number of selected literature data, parameters λ and γ are determined for the ionization equilibria of 3- and 4-monosubstituted benzoic acids, anilinium ions, phenols and pyridinium ions. In these reactions series, parameter λ, which measures the para/meta ratio of field/inductive effects, is lower than unity and shows a marked dependence on the basic molecular framework. It is best modelled in terms of a through-space field effect approach. The ratio γ/γ0, where γ0 is referred to the unified sigma-zero scale, is shown to correspond to the original Hammett's reaction constant ρ. It is concluded that the PHT constitutes an improved Hammett equation for the analysis of substituent effects in benzene derivatives taking into account statistical errors and making allowance for different transmission coefficients for the field/inductive effect from meta and para positions in different reaction series.

    Notizen: peri-Bridged naphthalenes in which the C-1 and C-8 atoms of the naphthalene ring are bonded to a single atom in a bridging group Z (Z = CH2, CHBr, C=O, NH, O, S, S=O and SO2) were studied by the AM1 semi-empirical SCF MO method. Although in peri-naphthalenes bridged by carbon or sulfur the naphthalene structure is planar, the corresponding nitrogen- or oxygen-bridged molecules are distorted about 15 and 23°, respectively. There are significant variations (from 92 to 106°) of the C-1-C-9-C-8 angle that is calculated in the cycle formed by the bridge. The calculated strain-energy barrier for pyramidal atom inversion in amine 4 and sulfoxide 7 are 32·5 and 174 kJ mol-1, respectively.

    Notizen: The electron-transfer quenching of Ru(bpy)32+ (tris(2,2′-bipyridine)ruthenium(II) excited state by 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP), 2,5-dichlorophenol (2,5-DCP) and 2,6-dichlorophenol (2,6-DCP), in their anionic forms, was studied in de-aerated solutions of neat methanol and 25, 50 and 75% v/v aqueous methanol at 30°C. The quenching rate constants (kq) were determined and their values range from 1 × 107 to 8 × 109 M-1 s-1. In all the mixtures methanol : water the kq values for 2,5-DCP were lower than for 2,4-DCP and 2,6-DCP. This result was discussed in terms of the effect of chloro atom on the quencher oxidation reaction. The photoredox product Ru(bpy)3+ was observed by laser flash photolysis and its quantum yield (ΦRu(+)) calculated by using a comparative method with the formation of zinctetraphenylporphyrin triplet state. The yields of cage escape (Yce) for the different methanol/water mixtures were calculated from the obtained values of ΦRu(+)). Yce increases from 0·1-0·2 in 25% v/v aqueous methanol to 0·5-0·6 in neat methanol. This change of Yce with the solvent composition was discussed in terms of combined effects of viscosity and solvent cage on the rate constant of cage escape (k-d) and the rate constant for back electron-transfer to the ground state from geminate pair (kbc), respectively. The constants k-d were calculated with the Eigen equation. The constants kbc were estimated from Yce and k-d by applying a simplified reaction scheme. The kbc kbc values range from 3·2 × 109 to 1·3 × 1010 s-1.

    Notizen: The synthesis of symmetrical blocked pyrylium derivatives by reaction of a cyclic aromatic ketone with ethyl orthoformate goes through an intermediate which can be isolated under certain conditions. This intermediate is unstable when starting from 1-tetralone derivatives but, surprisingly, it can be isolated easily when the synthesis is performed with 1-indanone derivatives. Further, in the latter case, this intermediate cyclizes hardly into the expected blocked pyrylium derivative. Its ionic structure was demonstrated by mass spectrometry and by 500 MHz 1H and 13C NMR techniques including heteronuclear H-C COSY and DEPT polarization transfer experiments. Hydrolysis of this intermediate in aqueous ethanol solution forms, in acidic or basic media, a pseudo-base, which in the latter case presents strong similarities with that obtained by the base-catalysed ring-opening of a blocked pyrylium ion. In both acidic and basic solutions, the pseudo-base obtained by the two sources shows identical UV-visible absorption spectra. The difficulty of the intermediate (g) originating from 1-indanone derivatives in cyclizing into the blocked pyrylium structure, in contrast to the intermediate formed from 1-tetralone derivatives, is tentatively explained.

    Notizen: Peroxidation of linoleic acid was initiated by azobis(isobutyronitrile) in tert-butyl alcohol and inhibited by α-tocopherol, β-carotene and retinal, either alone or in combination. Significant antioxidant synergism and a novel mutual protection of α-tocopherol and β-carotene were found and the possible involvement of retinal in the process is discussed.

UV spectra of five ethyl 3-hydroxy-3-(p-Y-substituted-phenyl)-propanates (4-Ys) and five 1-(p-Y-substituted-phenyl)-3-butyn-1-ols (5-Ys) were also measured. Correlation analysis results are discussed. Some literature UV data were also successfully correlated by the dual-parameter equation.

    Notizen: The photolysis and thermolysis of 7,8-diaza-3-oxatricyclo[4.2.1.02,5]non-7-enes were studied. Photolysis showed a novel [4π + 2π + 2π] cycloreversion in a formal way, the first example in azoalkane chemistry. This cycloreversion was found to be sensitized by the benzophenone produced. In contrast, thermolysis showed the typical decomposition pattern of azoalkanes, extrusion of nitrogen and subsequent σ-bond formation of the resulting biradical to afford the tricyclic oxetanes

    Notizen: The kinetics of the oxidation of leuco methylene blue and leuco thionine by some p-benzoquinones were investigated spectrophotometrically by means of the stopped-flow technique. Leuco methylene blue and leuco thionine were produced by photoreductions of methylene blue and thionine with triethylamine in ethanol in the drive syringe of the stopped-flow apparatus and their solutions were used as such in the measurement of the oxidation rates. The kinetic isotope effect on the oxidation rate was observed. The results can be explained by the general mechanism with stepwise electron-proton--electron transfers.
