Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Global value chains (GVCs) powered the surge of international trade after 1990 and now account for almost half of all trade. This shift enabled an unprecedented economic convergence: poor countries grew rapidly and began to catch up with richer countries. Since the 2008 global financial crisis, however, the growth of trade has been sluggish and the expansion of GVCs has stalled. Meanwhile, serious threats have emerged to the model of trade-led growth. New technologies could draw production closer to the consumer and reduce the demand for labor. And conflicts among large countries could lead to a retrenchment or a segmentation of GVCs. This book examines whether there is still a path to development through GVCs and trade. It concludes that technological change is, at this stage, more a boon than a curse. GVCs can continue to boost growth, create better jobs, and reduce poverty provided that developing countries implement deeper reforms to promote GVC participation; industrial countries pursue open, predictable policies; and all countries revive multilateral cooperation.

Notizen: We can see technology changing people's private and working lives. But what happens when these two worlds collide? This paper explores two small organisations that have taken different approaches to the use of mobile phone technology. This area of contested terrain is becoming increasingly present on the landscape of the employment relationship.

Notizen: This article analyses teamwork in French car manufacturing plants and those of their suppliers. During the 1990s, the introduction of ‘autonomous production units’ was aimed at reducing costs, increasing quality and shortening delivery deadlines. Teamwork in a unit involved delegating responsibilities to workers and led to an increased workload.

Notizen: This article presents findings from a study of control operators that raise concerns about safety-critical knowledge, culture and training. It is argued that the adoption of automated control systems can hinder the transfer of knowledge amongst operators, and this becomes an increasingly serious hazard as tacit knowledge is lost because of employee turnover.

Notizen: This paper reports the empirical findings of several surveys conducted among enterprises in Portugal in order to identify and summarise relevant enablers and constraints that may influence the implementation of telework in the Portuguese business environment. It also provided some common characteristics that will help us draw the profile of a Portuguese potential teleworker.

Notizen: Organisational Intranets provide a testing ground where certain theories of technology and organisations meet with emerging innovative practice. This paper develops a theoretical framework that is used to analyse a case study of the adoption, introduction and use of a company Intranet focusing on the competing representations of the Intranet presented by the staff involved.

Notizen: The concept of emotional labour provides an incomplete account of interactive service work, underplaying its invisible cognitive and non-routine elements. In interactive work, from customer service jobs in the fast food industry to ‘knowledge work’ and at those levels in between on which we focus here, many jobs involve ‘articulation work’—the often unacknowledged management of awkward intersections among the social worlds of people, technology and organisations.

Notizen: Through a longitudinal study of a mature family firm, this paper investigates the adoption and use of information technology in a family business. It is argued that the adoption and use of information technology is influenced by five key factors. These factors are discussed, leading to a presentation of a series of implications and conclusions.

Notizen: New information and communication technologies enable the spatial reconfiguration of work opening up possibilities for work to take place across multiple locations. This paper explores the implications of hybrid workspace through a new empirical study. It argues that spatial hybridity changes the nature of work, organisation and management across domestic space, organisational space and in cyberspace.
