Beschreibung: Casein is often used as an eco-friendly wood adhesive. In this study, we used casein for soil cementation by mixing it with Jumunjin sand, sodium hydroxide (SH), and calcium hydroxide (CH) as a standard casein formula. The modified casein binder with different proportions of SH and CH was applied to improve water resistance. Furthermore, a blast furnace slag (BFS) was additionally mixed and reacted with alkalinity of modified casein binder. Thus, three types (standard, modified, and modified + BFS, referred to as STD, MOD, and MBS, hereafter) of casein binders were tested for durability and strength of casein-cemented sand. A piezoelectric sensor was installed within each sample to determine the curing time of the casein-cemented samples. The samples were air-cured at room temperature for seven days and some were repeatedly immersed in water thrice. Unconfined compression and jar slake tests were carried out to evaluate the strength and durability of the casein-cemented sand. Also, the microstructure was analyzed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). We observed variations of peak conductance and corresponding frequency converged as the curing time increased. It was most significant for the MBS samples, which developed strength early. The unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of the air-cured samples was higher than those repeatedly immersed in water due to wash-off of the casein binder. The UCS of the dry MBS sample was 9900 kPa while that of the immersed sample was 430 kPa, which gradually decreased to 60 kPa upon repeated immersion. The samples with STD and MOD had no resistance to durability and showed cracks on the surface, while the MBS sample exhibited significantly improved durability and no cracks. We found that the MBS binder had a positively significant effect on the durability and strength of casein-cemented sand.

Beschreibung: Cu-Ni-Si alloys are widely used in lead frames and vacuum devices due to their high electrical conductivity and strength. In this paper, a Cu-Ni-Co-Si-Cr-(Ce) alloy was prepared by vacuum induction melting. Hot compression tests of the Cu-Ni-Co-Si-Cr and Cu-Ni-Co-Si-Cr-Ce alloys were carried out using a Gleeble-1500 simulator at 500–900 °C deformation temperatures and 0.001–10 s−1 strain rates. The texture change was analyzed by electron backscatter diffraction. The fiber component dominated the texture after compression, and the texture intensity was reduced during recrystallization. Moreover, the average misorientation angle φ for Cu-Ni-Co-Si-Cr-Ce (11°) was lower than that of Cu-Ni-Co-Si-Cr (16°) under the same conditions. Processing maps were developed to determine the optimal processing window. The microstructure and precipitates of the Cu-Ni-Co-Si-Cr and Cu-Ni-Co-Si-Cr-Ce alloys were also analyzed. The average grain size of the Cu-Ni-Co-Si-Cr-Ce alloy (48 μm) was finer than that of the Cu-Ni-Co-Si-Cr alloy (80 μm). The average size of precipitates in the Cu-Ni-Co-Si-Cr alloy was 73 nm, while that of the Cu-Ni-Co-Si-Cr-Ce alloy was 27 nm. The addition of Ce delayed the occurrence of dynamic recrystallization.

Beschreibung: A growing number of severe infections are related to antibiotic-resistant bacteria, therefore, in recent years, alternative antimicrobial materials based on silver nanoparticles (NPs) attracted a lot of attention. In the current research, we present a medical patch prototype containing diamond-like carbon nanocomposite thin films doped with silver nanoparticles (DLC:Ag), as a source of silver ions, and an aqueous mass of the gelatin/agar mixture as a silver ion accumulation layer. The DLC:Ag thin films with 3.4 at.% of silver were deposited on synthetic silk employing reactive unbalanced DC magnetron sputtering of the silver target with argon ions performed in the acetylene gas atmosphere. The average size of the silver nanoparticles as defined by scanning electron microscope was 24 nm. After the film deposition, the samples were etched with RF oxygen plasma, aiming at efficient silver ion release in aqueous media from the nanocomposite film. In the patch prototype, a mixture of agar and gelatin was applied in silicone carrier with cavities, acting as a silver ion accumulation layer that further enhanced the antimicrobial efficiency. It was found that the DLC:Ag thin film on the silk after soaking in water for 24 h was able to release up to 4 ppm of Ag. The microbiological experiments using S. aureus bacteria were performed with the patch prototype and the silver ion saturated water, demonstrated the inactivation of 99% and 79% of bacteria, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy analysis showed that silver NPs destroyed the bacteria cell and the bacteria affected by Ag ions had spots and perforated cell wall areas with cytoplasm leakage out was obtained. A preliminary preclinical study using the laboratory animals demonstrated that using the patch prototype, the methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA)-infected wound on skin surface healed faster compared with control and was able to kill all MRSA bacteria strains in the wound’s bed after 72 h of treatment.

Beschreibung: A new, double hydroxide based on Co and Fe was elaborated on by forced hydrolysis in a polyol medium. Complementary characterization techniques show that this new phase belongs to the layered double hydroxide family (LDH) with Co2+ and Fe3+ ions located in the octahedral sites of the bucite-like structure. The acetate anions occupy interlayer space with an interlamellar distance of 12.70 Å. This large distance likely facilitates the exchange reaction. Acetates were exchanged by carbonates. The as-obtained compound Co-Fe-Ac/Ex shows an interlamellar distance of 7.67 Å. The adsorption of direct red 2 by Co-Fe-Ac-LDH has been examined in order to measure the capability of this new LDH to eliminate highly toxic azoic anionic dyes from waste water and was compared with that of Co-Fe-Ac/Ex and Co-Fe-CO3/A (synthesized in an aqueous medium). The adsorption capacity was found to depend on contact time, pH, initial dye concentration, and heating temperature. Concerning CoFeAc-LDH, the dye uptake reaches a high level (588 mg/g) due to the occurrence of both adsorption processes: physisorption on the external surface and chemical sorption due to the intercalation of dye by exchange with an acetate anion. The study enables us to quantify the uptake amount of each effect in which the intercalation has the most important amount (418 mg/g).

Beschreibung: It is well known that the traditional synthetic polymers, such as Polyurethane foams, require raw materials that are not fully sustainable and are based on oil-feedstocks. For this reason, renewable resources such as biomass, polysaccharides and proteins are still recognized as one of the most promising approaches for substituting oil-based raw materials (mainly polyols). However, polyurethanes from renewable sources exhibit poor physical and functional performances. For this reason, the best technological solution is the production of polyurethane materials obtained through a partial replacement of the oil-based polyurethane precursors. This approach enables a good balance between the need to improve the sustainability of the polymer and the need to achieve suitable performances, to fulfill the technological requirements for specific applications. In this paper, a succinic-based polyol sample (obtained from biomass source) was synthesized, characterized and blended with cardanol-based polyol (Mannich-based polyol) to produce sustainable rigid polyurethane foams in which the oil-based polyol is totally replaced. A suitable amount of catalysts and surfactant, water as blowing reagent and poly-methylene diphenyl di-isocyanate as isocyanate source were used for the polyurethane synthesis. The resulting foams were characterized by means of infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) to control the cross-linking reactions, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to evaluate the morphological structure and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and thermal conductivity to evaluate thermal degradation behavior and thermal insulation properties.

Beschreibung: In the machine, metallurgical, and shipbuilding industries, steel products with alloy and composite coatings based on nickel may be used. It is expedient to improve the physicochemical properties of the surface layer of products as they have a significant roughness value after thermal spraying. It is therefore important to finish the layers applied by flame spraying, where machining is used for this purpose. However, it causes a loss of coating material, which is quite expensive. Therefore, in order to reduce costs and improve the quality of the surface layer, the finishing treatment of nickel-based coatings by means of plastic working is used. Two types of plastic working were proposed: rolling and burnishing. Numerical and experimental tests of the plastic processing of alloy coatings were carried out. The roughness of the coatings after rolling decreased to 1/25 and 30% strengthening of the alloy coating matrix was determined. After burnishing, roughness was reduced to 1/12 and the alloy coatings were strengthened by 25%. Plastic working by rolling and burnishing has a beneficial effect on the surface quality of the workpiece, not only by significantly improving the roughness, but also by increasing the strength properties of the surface layers.

Beschreibung: The targeted separation of oil/water mixtures is a rapidly growing field of research, mainly due to contaminated water becoming an increasingly important environmental issue. Superhydrophobic materials are highly suited to this application; however, growing efforts are being devoted to developing applicable technologies within a range of research communities. The optimal technical solution is one that combines a high separation efficiency with a straightforward fabrication procedure at a low cost. In this report, micronized polyethylene powder has been utilized as a low-cost hydrophobic material to manufacture easy-to-fabricate filters. The effect of heating and solvent addition on the water repellence behaviour has been investigated, according to which the optimum fabrication conditions were determined. The filters show high water repellence (WCA = 154°) and efficient oil/water separation (~99%). The filters are designed to provide a readily achievable approach for the separation of oils (hydrophobic solvents) from water in a range of potential applications.

Beschreibung: Arsenic poisoning in the environment can cause severe effects on human health, hence detection is crucial. An electrochemical-based portable assessment of arsenic contamination is the ability to identify arsenite (As(III)). To achieve this, a low-cost electroanalytical assay for the detection of As(III) utilizing a silica nanoparticles (SiNPs)-modified screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE) was developed. The morphological and elemental analysis of functionalized SiNPs and a SiNPs/SPCE-modified sensor was studied using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The electrochemical responses towards arsenic detection were measured using the cyclic voltammetry (CV) and linear sweep anodic stripping voltammetry (LSASV) techniques. Under optimized conditions, the anodic peak current was proportional to the As(III) concentration over a wide linear range of 5 to 30 µg/L, with a detection limit of 6.2 µg/L. The suggested approach was effectively valid for the testing of As(III) found within the real water samples with good reproducibility and stability.

Beschreibung: In this study, Version 5.16 of the WAVEWATCH-III (WW3) model is used to simulate parameters of typhoon-generated wave fields in the Western North Pacific Ocean during the period 1998–2017. From a database of more than 300 typhoons, typhoon tracks are partitioned into six groups by their direction of motion and longitude of recurvature track. For typhoons that recurve east of 140° E, or track toward mainland Asia, regions of high significant wave height (SWH) values are separated by a minimum in SWH near 30° N. Partitioning SWH into wind sea and swell components demonstrates that variations in typhoon tracks produce a much stronger signal in the wind sea component of the wave system. Empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis is used to compute the four leading modes of variation in average SWH simulated by the WW3 model. The first EOF mode contributes to 17.3% of the total variance; all other modes contribute less than 10%. The first EOF mode also oscillates on an approximately 1-year cycle during the period 1998–2017. Overall, typhoon-induced wave energy dominates north of 30° N. Temporal analysis of the leading principal component of SWH indicates that (a) the intensity of the wave pattern produced by westward-tracking typhoons decreased during the last 20 years, and (b) typhoons that recurve east of 140° E and those that track westward toward southeast Asia are largely responsible for the decadal variability of typhoon-induced wave distribution.

Beschreibung: Gadolinium-Doped Ceria (GDC) is a prospective material for application in electrochemical devices. Free sintering in air of GDC powder usually requires temperatures in the range of 1400 to 1600 °C and dwell time of several hours. Recently, it was demonstrated that sintering temperature can be significantly decreased, when sintering was performed in reducing atmosphere. Following re-oxidation at elevated temperatures was found to be a helpful measure to avoid sample failure. Sintering temperature and dwell time can be also decreased by use of Spark Plasma Sintering, also known as Field-Assisted Sintering Technique (FAST/SPS). In the present work, we combined for the first time the advantages of FAST/SPS technology and re-oxidation for sintering of GDC parts. However, GDC samples sintered by FAST/SPS were highly sensitive to fragmentation. Therefore, we investigated the factors responsible for this effect. Based on understanding of these factors, a special tool was designed enabling pressureless FAST/SPS sintering in controlled atmosphere. For proof of concept, a commercial GDC powder was sintered in this tool in reducing atmosphere (Ar-2.9%H2), followed by re-oxidation. The fragmentation of GDC samples was avoided and the number of micro-cracks was reduced to a minimum. Prospects of GDC sintering by FAST/SPS were discussed.

Beschreibung: The 450-m long spit that extends westward from the northwest corner of Isla San Luis Gonzaga is one of the largest and most complex constructions of unconsolidated cobbles and boulders found anywhere in Mexico’s Gulf of California. The material source derives from episodic but intense storm erosion along the island’s andesitic cliff face with steep northern exposures. A well-defined marine terrace from the late Pleistocene cuts across the same corner of the island and provides a marker for the subsequent development of the spit that post-dates tectonic-eustatic adjustments. A total of 660 individual andesite clasts from seven transects across the spit were measured for analyses of change in shape and size. These data are pertinent to the application of mathematical formulas elaborated after Nott (2003) and subsequent refinements to estimate individual wave heights necessary for lift from parent sea cliffs and subsequent traction. Although the ratio of boulders to clasts diminishes from the proximal to distal end of the structure, relatively large boulders populate all transects and the average wave height required for the release of joint-bound blocks at the rocky shore amounts to 5 m. Based on the region’s historical record of hurricanes, such storms tend to decrease in intensity as they migrate northward through the Gulf of California’s 1100-km length. However, the size and complexity of the San Luis Gonzaga spit suggests that a multitude of extreme storm events impacted the island in the upper gulf area through the Holocene time, yielding a possible average growth rate between 7 and 8 m/century over the last 10,000 years. In anticipation of future storms, a system to track the movement of sample boulders should be emplaced on the San Luis Gonzaga spit and similar localities with major coastal boulder deposits.

Beschreibung: Over the past decades, extensive studies on municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) ashes have been performed to develop more effective recycling and waste management programs. Despite the large amount of research activities and the resulting improvements to MSWI ashes, the recycling programs for MSWI ashes are limited. For instance, although the U.S. generates more MSWI ashes than any other country in the world, its reuse/recycle programs are limited; bottom ash and fly ash are combined and disposed of in landfills. Reuse of MSWI ashes in the construction sectors (i.e., geomaterials, asphalt paving, and concrete products) as replacements for raw materials is one of most promising options because of the large consumption and relatively lenient environmental criteria. The main objective of this study was to comprehensively review MSWI ashes with regard to specific engineering properties and their performance as construction materials. The focus was on (1) the current practices of MSWI ash management (in particular, a comparison between European countries and the U.S.), (2) the engineering properties and performance of ashes when they are used as substitutes of construction materials and for field applications, and (3) the environmental properties and criteria for the use of MSWI ashes. Overall, the asphalt and concrete applications are the most promising, from both the mechanical and leachate viewpoints. However, cons were also observed: high absorption of MSWI ash requires a high asphalt binder content in hot-mix asphalt, and metallic elements in the ash may generate H2 gas in the high-pH environment of the concrete. These side effects can be predicted via material characterization (i.e., chemical and physical), and accordingly, proper treatment and/or modified mix proportioning can be performed prior to use.

Beschreibung: Fungal prosthetic-joint infections are rare but devastating complications following arthroplasty. These infections are highly recurrent and expose the patient to the development of candidemia, which has high mortality rates. Patients with this condition are often immunocompromised and present several comorbidities, and thus pose a challenge for diagnosis and treatment. The most frequently isolated organisms in these infections are Candida albicans and Candida parapsilosis, pathogens that initiate the infection by developing a biofilm on the implant surface. In this study, a novel hybrid organo–inorganic sol–gel coating was developed from a mixture of organopolysiloxanes and organophosphite, to which different concentrations of fluconazole or anidulafungin were added. Then, the capacity of these coatings to prevent biofilm formation and treat mature biofilms produced by reference and clinical strains of C. albicans and C. Parapsilosis was evaluated. Anidulafungin-loaded sol–gel coatings were more effective in preventing C. albicans biofilm formation, while fluconazole-loaded sol–gel prevented C. parapsilosis biofilm formation more effectively. Treatment with unloaded sol–gel was sufficient to reduce C. albicans biofilms, and the sol–gels loaded with fluconazole or anidulafungin slightly enhanced this effect. In contrast, unloaded coatings stimulated C. parapsilosis biofilm formation, and loading with fluconazole reduced these biofilms by up to 99%. In conclusion, these coatings represent a novel therapeutic approach with potential clinical use to prevent and treat fungal prosthetic-joint infections.

Beschreibung: Concentrated collagen hydrolysate (HC10CC), rabbit collagen glue (RCG), and keratin hydrolysate (KH) were investigated in terms of their extraction from mammalian by-products and processing by electrospinning. The electrospun nanofibers were characterized by scanning electron microscopy coupled with the energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDS), attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and indentation tests. The cytotoxicity of the electrospun nanofibers was conducted on L929 fibroblast cells using MTT and LDH assays and cell morphology observations. The electrospun RCG and KH nanofibers morphology showed an average size of nanofibers ranging between 44 and 410 nm, while the electrospun HC10CC nanofibers exhibited higher sizes. The ATR-FTIR spectra performed both on extracted proteins and electrospun nanofibers showed that the triple helix structure of collagen is partially preserved. The results were in agreement with the circular dichroism analysis for protein extracts. Furthermore, the viscoelastic properties of electrospun KH nanofibers were superior to those of electrospun RCG nanofibers. Based on both in vitro quantitative and qualitative analysis, the electrospun nanofibers were not cytotoxic, inducing a healthy cellular response. The results of new electrospun protein-based nanofibers may be useful for further research on bioactive properties of these nanofibers for tissue engineering.

Beschreibung: As Web applications become more and more complex, the development costs are increasing as well. A Model Driven Architecture (MDA) approach is proposed in this paper since it simplifies modeling, design, implementation, and integration of applications by defining software mainly at the model level. We adopt the The Unified Modeling Language (UML), as modeling language. UML provides a set of diagrams to model structural and behavioral aspects of the Web applications. Automatic translation of UML diagrams to the Object-Oriented code is highly desirable because it eliminates the chances of introducing human errors. Moreover, automatic code generation helps the software designers delivering of the software on time. In our approach, the automatic transformations across the MDA’s levels are based on meta-models for two of the most important constructs of UML, namely Use Cases and classes. A proprietary tool (called xGenerator) performs the transformations up to the Java source code. The architecture of the generated Web applications respects a variant of the well-known Model-View-Controller (MVC) pattern.

Beschreibung: Wild and managed bees provide pollination services to crops and wild plants, as well as a variety of other services beneficial to humans. Honey bees are the most economically valuable pollinator worldwide. It has been calculated that 9.5% of the total economic value of agricultural production comes from insect pollination, thus amounting to just under USD 200 billion globally. More than 100 important crops depend on pollination by honey bees. The latter pollinate not only a wide number of commercial crops but also many wild plants, some of which are threatened by extinction and constitute a valuable genetic resource. Moreover, as pollinators, honey bees play a significant role in every aspect of the ecosystem by facilitating the growth of trees, flowers, and other plants that serve as food and shelter for many large and small creatures. In this paper, we describe how the reduction in honey bee populations affects various economic sectors, as well as human health.

Beschreibung: Dense grass covers are generally recommended for surface protection of sea dikes against mild and moderate hydraulic loads. The standard seeding mixtures were composed to meet the technical requirements and ensure dike safety. These mixtures are, however, limited in their species diversity. In the present study, four differently vegetated surfaces were tested regarding their erosion resistance against wave impacts and overflow. The test vegetations ranged from a species-poor grass-dominated reference mixture to species-rich herb-dominated mixtures. Two vegetations were reinforced with a three-dimensional geogrid. For the unreinforced vegetations, the erosion rate due to wave impacts decreased exponentially with increasing root density and root length density. The geogrid reinforcements functioned as additional protection when the upper vegetation layer was eroded and led to slightly decreasing erosion rate with depth. In overflow simulations, the relatively densely-vegetated grass-dominated mixture experienced least erosion. Erosion was mainly initiated at bare spots emphasizing the major role of a closed vegetation cover and dike maintenance. The present results give new insights into erosion patterns of unreinforced and reinforced vegetated dike covers and the relation between vegetation parameters and hydraulic resistance to wave impacts and overflow.

Beschreibung: At the stage of designing a special machine tool, it is necessary to analyze many variants of structural solutions of frames and load-bearing systems and to choose the best solution in terms of dynamic properties, in particular considering its resistance to chatter. For this reason, it is preferred to adopt a low-dimensional calculation model, which allows the user to reduce the necessary calculation time while maintaining a high accuracy. The paper presents the methodology of modeling the natural frequencies, mode shapes, and receptance functions of machine tool steel welded frames filled with strongly heterogenous polymer concrete, using low-dimensional models developed by the rigid finite elements method (RigFEM). In the presented study, a RigFEM model of a simple steel beam filled with polymer concrete and a frame composed of such beams were built. Then, the dynamic properties obtained on the basis of the developed RigFEM models were compared with the experimental results and the 1D and 3D finite element models (FEM) in terms of accuracy and dimensionality. As a result of the experimental verification, the full structural compliance of the RigFEM models (for beam and frame) was obtained, which was manifested by the agreement of the mode shapes. Additionally, experimental verification showed a high accuracy of the RigFEM models, obtaining for the beam model a relative error for natural frequencies of less than 4% and on average 2.2%, and for the frame model at a level not exceeding 11% and on average 5.5%. Comparing the RigFEM and FEM models, it was found that the RigFEM models have a slightly worse accuracy, with a dimensionality significantly reduced by 95% for the beam and 99.8% for the frame.

Beschreibung: Cement composites prepared with nanoparticles have been widely studied in order to achieve superior performance structures. The incorporation of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is an excellent alternative due to their mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties. However, effective dispersion is essential to ensure strength gains. In the present work, cement pastes were prepared incorporating CNTs in proportions up to 0.10% by weight of cement, dispersed on the surface of anhydrous cement particles in isopropanol suspension and using ultrasonic agitation. Digital image correlation was employed to obtain basic mechanical parameters of three-point bending tests. The results indicated a 34% gain in compressive strength and 12% in flexural tensile strength gains, respectively, as well as a 70% gain in fracture energy and 14% in fracture toughness in the presence of 0.05% CNTs were recorded. These results suggest that CNTs act as crack propagation controllers. Moreover, CNT presence contributes to pore volume reduction, increases the density of cement pastes, and suggests that CNTs additionally act as nucleation sites of the cement hydration products. Scanning electron microscopy images indicate effective dispersion as a result of the methodology adopted, plus strong bonding between CNTs and the cement hydration product. Therefore, CNTs can be used to obtain more resistant and durable cement-based composites.

Beschreibung: It is critical for organizations to self-assess their Industry 4.0 readiness to survive and thrive in the age of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Thereon, conceptualization or development of an Industry 4.0 readiness model with the fundamental model dimensions is needed. This paper used a systematic literature review (SLR) methodology with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines and content analysis strategy to review 97 papers in peer-reviewed academic journals and industry reports published from 2000 to 2019. The review identifies 30 Industry 4.0 readiness models with 158 unique model dimensions. Based on this review, there are two theoretical contributions. First, this paper proposes six dimensions (Technology, People, Strategy, Leadership, Process and Innovation) that can be considered as the most important dimensions for organizations. Second, this review reveals that 70 (44%) out of total 158 total unique dimensions on Industry 4.0 pertain to the assessment of technology alone. This establishes that organizations need to largely improve on their technology readiness, to strengthen their Industry 4.0 readiness. In summary, these six most common dimensions, and in particular, the dominance of the technology dimension provides a research agenda for future research on Industry 4.0 readiness.

Traffic congestion happens not only in cities, but also on highways and other places. The current transportation system is not satisfactory in the area without monitoring. In order to improve the limitations of the current traffic system in obtaining road data and expand its visual range, the system uses remote sensing data as the data source for judging congestion. Since some remote sensing data needs to be kept confidential, this is a problem to be solved to effectively protect the safety of remote sensing data during the deep learning training process. Compared with the general deep learning training method, this study provides a federated learning method to identify vehicle targets in remote sensing images to solve the problem of data privacy in the training process of remote sensing data. The experiment takes the remote sensing image data sets of Los Angeles Road and Washington Road as samples for training, and the training results can achieve an accuracy of about 85%, and the estimated processing time of each image can be as low as 0.047 s. In the final experimental results, the system can automatically identify the vehicle targets in the remote sensing images to achieve the purpose of detecting congestion.

Beschreibung: Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) are increasingly playing a significant role in the aviation industry and space exploration. Moreover, there is a need to study the neutron radiation effect on the MEMS structural members and the MEMS devices reliability in general. Experiments with MEMS structural members showed changes in their operation after exposure to neutron radiation. In this study, the neutron irradiation effect on the flexible MEMS resonators’ stability in the form of shallow rectangular shells is investigated. The theory of flexible rectangular shallow shells under the influence of both neutron irradiation and temperature field is developed. It consists of three components. First, the theory of flexible rectangular shallow shells under neutron radiation in temperature field was considered based on the Kirchhoff hypothesis and energetic Hamilton principle. Second, the theory of plasticity relaxation and cyclic loading were taken into account. Third, the Birger method of variable parameters was employed. The derived mathematical model was solved using both the finite difference method and the Bubnov–Galerkin method of higher approximations. It was established based on a few numeric examples that the irradiation direction of the MEMS structural members significantly affects the magnitude and shape of the plastic deformations’ distribution, as well as the forces magnitude in the shell middle surface, although qualitatively with the same deflection the diagrams of the main investigated functions were similar.

Beschreibung: The sports industry is an ever-growing sector worldwide. With technological advancements in information technologies, the sports industry has merged with the entertainment industry, reaching and influencing billions of people globally. However, to ensure and advance the safety, security, and sustainability of the sports industry, technological innovations are always needed in several manufacturing and materials processes to achieve cost-effectiveness, efficiency, durability, reusability, and recyclability of products used in this industry. For example, 90% of the field hockey equipment produced in the world comes from Sialkot, Pakistan. Most export quality field hockey equipment is currently produced via reinforcement of glass/carbon fibers in epoxy resin. The current study aimed to introduce new materials for field hockey equipment to reduce manufacturing costs and the environmental impact of synthetic materials, without comprising the quality of the final product. Our literature review on natural fibers revealed that they offer excellent and compatible mechanical properties. Based on extensive experimental studies, we concluded that banana fiber reinforced hybrid composites could be an alternative to pure glass fiber reinforced composites, with comparable and even higher load withstanding capabilities. Using banana fiber reinforced hybrid composites for the fabrication of hockey products would cut costs and lower the environmental impact stemming from the uses of biodegradable organic materials. It will also lead to the development of a domestic economy based on domestic resources.

Beschreibung: In this paper, we have investigated the deposition of thin films from natural carvacrol extract using dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma polymerization, aiming at the inhibition of bacteria adhesion and proliferation. The films deposited on stainless steel samples have been characterized by scanning electron microscopy, infrared reflectance-absorbance spectroscopy, profilometry, and contact angle measurements. Films with thicknesses ranging from 1.5 μm to 3.5 μm presented a chemical structure similar to that of carvacrol. While the formation of biofilm was observed on untreated samples, the coating completely inhibited the adhesion of E. coli and reduced the adhesion of S. aureus biofilm in more than 90%.

Beschreibung: Fractal’s spatially nonuniform phenomena and chaotic nature highlight the function utilization in fractal cryptographic applications. This paper proposes a new composite fractal function (CFF) that combines two different Mandelbrot set (MS) functions with one control parameter. The CFF simulation results demonstrate that the given map has high initial value sensitivity, complex structure, wider chaotic region, and more complicated dynamical behavior. By considering the chaotic properties of a fractal, an image encryption algorithm using a fractal-based pixel permutation and substitution is proposed. The process starts by scrambling the plain image pixel positions using the Henon map so that an intruder fails to obtain the original image even after deducing the standard confusion-diffusion process. The permutation phase uses a Z-scanned random fractal matrix to shuffle the scrambled image pixel. Further, two different fractal sequences of complex numbers are generated using the same function i.e. CFF. The complex sequences are thus modified to a double datatype matrix and used to diffuse the scrambled pixels in a row-wise and column-wise manner, separately. Security and performance analysis results confirm the reliability, high-security level, and robustness of the proposed algorithm against various attacks, including brute-force attack, known/chosen-plaintext attack, differential attack, and occlusion attack.

Beschreibung: Incorporating reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) into asphalt mixtures achieves astonishingly environmental and economic benefits. However, there is hesitation to use higher RAP content due to the concern regarding the deterioration in pavement performance, especially the cracking resistance. Basalt fiber has been considered an effective additive to reinforce the performance of asphalt mixtures and, subsequently, the reinforcement effect is also expected for high-RAP content mixtures. Therefore, this study investigated the effect of basalt fiber on the pavement performance of asphalt mixtures with 0%, 30%, 40%, and 50% RAP contents against high-temperature performance, moisture susceptibility, low-temperature and intermediate-temperature cracking resistance, based on the wheel-tracking test, the uniaxial penetration test, the freeze-thaw splitting test, the low-temperature bending beam test, the semicircular bend fracture test and the indirect tensile asphalt cracking test, respectively. In addition, a performance-space diagram was developed to determine the mixture performance shift caused by basalt fiber. The results showed that adding basalt fiber compensated for the detrimental effect caused by RAP, leading to significant enhancement in moisture susceptibility and low- and intermediate-temperature cracking resistance of mixtures with high RAP content, along with the enhancement in high-temperature performance, indicating that basalt fiber can contribute to the use of high RAP content.

Beschreibung: This paper presents seakeeping test results for a coastal patrol ship (CPS) in the Croatian Navy (CN). The full-scale tests were conducted on a CPS prototype that was accepted by the CN. The seakeeping numerical prediction and model tests were done during preliminary project design. However, these results are not fully comparable with the prototype tests since the ship was lengthened in the last phases of the project. Key numerical calculations are presented. The CPS project aims to renew a part of the Croatian Coast Guard with five ships. After successful prototype acceptance trials, the Croatian Ministry of Defence (MoD) will continue building the first ship in the series in early 2020. Full-scale prototype seakeeping test results could be valuable in the design of similar CPS projects. The main aim of this paper is to publish parts of the sea trial results related to the seakeeping performance of the CPS. Coast guards around the world have numerous challenges related to peacetime tasks such as preventing human and drug trafficking, fighting terrorism, controlling immigration, and protecting the marine environmental. They must have reliable platforms with good seakeeping characteristics that are important for overall ship operations. The scientific purpose of this paper is to contribute to the design process of similar CPS projects in terms of the development of seakeeping requirements and their level of fulfillment on an actual ship.

Beschreibung: A high positive magnetoresistance (MR), 78%, is observed at 2 K on the ab plane of the diamagnetic RuSb2+ semiconductor. On the ac plane, MR is 44% at 2 K, and about 7% at 300 K. MR at different temperatures do not follow the Kohler’s rule. It suggests that the multiband effect plays a role on the carrier transportation. RuSb2+ is a semiconductor with both positive and negative carriers. The quantum interference effect with the weak localization correction lies behind the high positive MR at low temperature. Judged from the ultraviolet–visible spectra, it has a direct band gap of 1.29 eV. The valence band is 0.39 eV below the Fermi energy. The schematic energy band structure is proposed based on experimental results.

Beschreibung: The fused filament fabrication (FFF) of ceramics enables the additive manufacturing of components with complex geometries for many applications like tooling or prototyping. Nevertheless, due to the many factors involved in the process, it is difficult to separate the effect of the different parameters on the final properties of the FFF parts, which hinders the expansion of the technology. In this paper, the effect of the fill pattern used during FFF on the defects and the mechanical properties of zirconia components is evaluated. The zirconia-filled filaments were produced from scratch, characterized by different methods and used in the FFF of bending bars with infill orientations of 0°, ±45° and 90° with respect to the longest dimension of the specimens. Three-point bending tests were conducted on the specimens with the side in contact with the build platform under tensile loads. Next, the defects were identified with cuts in different sections. During the shaping by FFF, pores appeared inside the extruded roads due to binder degradation and or moisture evaporation. The changes in the fill pattern resulted in different types of porosity and defects in the first layer, with the latter leading to earlier fracture of the components. Due to these variations, the specimens with the 0° infill orientation had the lowest porosity and the highest bending strength, followed by the specimens with ±45° infill orientation and finally by those with 90° infill orientation.

Beschreibung: In this paper, a weight function method based on the first four terms of a Taylor’s series expansion is proposed to determine the stress intensity factors of functionally graded plates with semi-elliptical surface cracks. Cracked surfaces that are subjected to constant, linear, parabolic and cubic stress fields are considered. The weight functions for the surface, deepest and general points on the crack faces of long and deep cracked functionally graded plates are derived, which has never been done before in the literature. The accuracy of the method in this study is then validated by comparing the results with those of finite element modeling. The numerical results indicate that the derived weight functions are highly accurate and robust enough to predict the stress intensity factors for cracked functionally graded plates subjected to non-uniform stress distributions. The weight function method is therefore a time-saving technique and suitable for handling non-uniform stress fields.

Beschreibung: Water-lubricated bearings usually operate under severe environmental conditions, most likely in the mixed regime, in which surface contact between the drive shaft and the bearing sleeve is often significant. This presents great challenges to bearing design, especially material selection. The Tenmat, Thordon, and Rubber are common water-lubricated bearing composites. In this paper, by using a block-on-ring test apparatus, the Stribeck curve, wear rate, and vibration characteristics of three kinds of polymer materials in water-lubricated bearings (Tenmat, Thordon SXL, and Ben Teng Group (BTG) Rubber) under low speed and heavy load were studied. The experimental results show that, under the same working conditions, BTG rubber has excellent tribological properties and vibration properties. The research method in this paper can provide references for the selection of materials used for friction pair, improvement of working performance and vibration reduction of water-lubricated bearings in the future.

Beschreibung: One of the biggest challenges in the commercialization of tin dioxide (SnO2)-based lithium-ion battery (LIB) electrodes is the volume expansion of SnO2 during the charge–discharge process. Additionally, the aggregation of SnO2 also deteriorates the performance of anode materials. In this study, we prepared SnO2 nanoflowers (NFs) using nanocrystalline cellulose (CNC) to improve the surface area, prevent the particle aggregation, and alleviate the change in volume of LIB anodes. Moreover, CNC served not only as the template for the synthesis of the SnO2 NFs but also as a conductive material, after annealing the SnO2 NFs at 800 °C to improve their electrochemical performance. The obtained CNC–SnO2NF composite was used as an active LIB electrode material and exhibited good cycling performance and a high initial reversible capacity of 891 mA h g−1, at a current density of 100 mA g−1. The composite anode could retain 30% of its initial capacity after 500 charge–discharge cycles.

Beschreibung: To speed up the implementation of the two-dimensional materials in the development of potential biomedical applications, the toxicological aspects toward human health need to be addressed. Due to time-consuming and expensive analysis, only part of the continuously expanding family of 2D materials can be tested in vitro. The machine learning methods can be used—by extracting new insights from available biological data sets, and provide further guidance for experimental studies. This study identifies the most relevant highly surface-specific features that might be responsible for cytotoxic behavior of 2D materials, especially MXenes. In particular, two factors, namely, the presence of transition metal oxides and lithium atoms on the surface, are identified as cytotoxicity-generating features. The developed machine learning model succeeds in predicting toxicity for other 2D MXenes, previously not tested in vitro, and hence, is able to complement the existing knowledge coming from in vitro studies. Thus, we claim that it might be one of the solutions for reducing the number of toxicological studies needed, and allows for minimizing failures in future biological applications.

Beschreibung: We consider a rather general problem of nonparametric estimation of an uncountable set of probability density functions (p.d.f.’s) of the form: f ( x ; r ) , where r is a non-random real variable and ranges from R 1 to R 2 . We put emphasis on the algorithmic aspects of this problem, since they are crucial for exploratory analysis of big data that are needed for the estimation. A specialized learning algorithm, based on the 2D FFT, is proposed and tested on observations that allow for estimate p.d.f.’s of a jet engine temperatures as a function of its rotation speed. We also derive theoretical results concerning the convergence of the estimation procedure that contains hints on selecting parameters of the estimation algorithm.

Moreover, citizens and experts asked for a direct contact, not relying on mass-media communication. In this paper, we describe how the Florence and Rome science cafés, contacted by citizens and experts, either directly or through the Florence science shop, responded to these needs by organizing online versions of traditional face-to-face events, experiencing high levels of participation. The science café methodology was also requested by a high school that needed to conclude an engagement experience with students and their families. We also report the results of a survey about the satisfaction of this new methodology with respect to the old one.

Beschreibung: The extreme heating environment during re-entry requires an efficient heat shield to protect a spacecraft. The current method of manufacturing a heat shield is labor intensive. The application of 3D printing can reduce cost and manufacturing time and improve the quality of a heat shield. A 3D printed carbon fiber/polyether ether ketone (CF/PEEK) composite was proposed as a heat shield material. The aim was to develop a heat shield and the structural member as a single structure while maintaining the necessary recession resistance. Test samples were exposed to thermal cycles and ultraviolet (UV) radiation environment. Subsequently, a tensile test was performed to evaluate the effect of thermal cycle and UV radiation on the mechanical properties. The sample’s recession performance and temperature behavior were evaluated using an arc heated wind tunnel. Exposure to thermal cycle and UV radiation have limited effect on the mechanical properties, recession behavior and temperature behavior of 3D CF/PEEK. Results from the arc heating test showed an expansion of the sample surface and better recession resistance than other existing ablator materials. Overall, 3D CF/PEEK has excellent recession resistance while maintaining mechanical properties when exposed to high temperature, thermal cycle and UV radiation.

Beschreibung: The tensile properties, scratch behaviors and sliding wear of an oxide scale obtained on the surface of titanium Grade 2 in the process of isothermal oxidation at 600, 700 and 800 °C were determined in the study. It was shown that the intensity of the oxidation process increased along with an increase in temperature and extension of the oxidation time, which translated directly into the thickness of the deposited oxide layers. The tests showed that isothermal oxidation had an adverse effect on the tensile properties of titanium. After oxidation, it was found that the maximum reduction in tensile strength, Rm, was approximately 17.5%, and of the yield point, Rp0.2, approximately 13.9%. Examination of scratch behaviors of the oxide scale showed that the layers obtained at temperatures of 700 (72 h) and 800 °C (2 and 6 h) had the best adhesion properties. The best resistance to scratching was exhibited by the layer obtained after 6 h oxidation at 800 °C (critical load: Lc1 = 63 N, Lc2 = 85 N). The study showed that after oxidation, a considerable reduction in wear factor of a disc made of titanium Grade 2 was observed for both the friction couples used (Al2O3, steel 100Cr6). The maximum reduction in wear factor of the oxidized titanium disc during interaction with Al2O3 balls was ca. 79%, and with 100Cr6 balls, ca. 96%.

Beschreibung: Stabilization is a traditional strategy used to improve soils with the main objective of ensuring that this base is compliant with the technical specifications required for the subsequent development of different infrastructures. This study proposes the use of commercial nanomaterials, based on a solution of silicates, to improve the technical characteristics and bearing capacity of the expansive soil. A physical–chemical property study was carried out on the additive nanomaterial. Subsequently, different mixtures of expansive soil, selected soil and artificial gravel with quicklime and commercial nanomaterials were developed to evaluate the improvement obtained by the use of nanomaterials in the technical characteristics of the soil. Compressive strength and the Californian Bearing Ratio index were considerably increased. A full-scale study was carried out in which the nanomaterial product was applied to two different sections of stabilized road compared to a control section. The results obtained showed that the use of nanomaterial led to the possibility of reducing the control section by 30 cm, thus achieving less use of quicklime and a mechanical means for preparing the road section. The use of commercial nanomaterial improved the behavior of the stabilized sub-base layer. Through life cycle assessment, this study has shown that the use of nanomaterials reduces the environmental impact associated with soil stabilization.

Beschreibung: Zirconia is a well-known bioceramic for dental and orthopedic applications due to its mechanical and aesthetic properties. However, it lacks sufficient bioactivity to bond with the living bone. This study was aimed to induce bioactivity to tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (3Y-TZP) by simple biomimetic aqueous solution treatment. First, hydrofluoric acid (HF) etching was performed to enhance the surface roughness of the 3Y-TZP surface. Then, the samples were treated with two types of aqueous solutions containing calcium and phosphate ions (Ca-P solutions); one solution additionally contained magnesium (Mg) ions and the other without Mg ions. Finally, hydroxyapatite (HAp)-forming ability was evaluated by the conventional simulated body fluid (SBF) test, and the effect of Mg ions on the adhesive strength of the HAp layer to the roughened 3Y-TZP surface was also investigated. The results concluded that there were no noticeable differences in the effect of Mg ions on the HAp-forming ability, and both types of solution treatments resulted in dense HAp formation in 1 day SBF immersion. However, incorporation of Mg ions in one of the Ca-P solutions significantly improved the adhesive strength of the HAp layer to the HF-etched 3Y-TZP substrate compared to the Ca-P solution with no Mg ions.

Beschreibung: Plastic has become a “hot topic” for aquatic ecosystems’ conservation together with other issues such as climate change and biodiversity loss. Indeed, plastics may detrimentally affect habitats and biota. Small plastics, called microplastics, are more easily taken up by freshwater organisms, causing negative effects on growth, reproduction, predatory performance, etc. Since available information on microplastics in freshwater are fragmentary, the aim of this review is twofold: (i) to show, analyse, and discuss data on the microplastics concentration in freshwater and (ii) to provide the main polymers contaminating freshwater for management planning. A bibliographic search collected 158 studies since 2012, providing the scientific community with one of the largest data sets on microplastics in freshwater. Contamination is reported in all continents except Antarctica, but a lack of information is still present. Lentic waters are generally more contaminated than lotic waters, and waters are less contaminated than sediments, suggested to be sinks. The main contaminating polymers are polypropylene and polyethylene for sediment and water, while polyethylene and polyethylene terephthalate are mainly found in biota. Future research is encouraged (1) to achieve a standardised protocol for monitoring, (2) to identify sources and transport routes (including primary or secondary origin), and (3) to investigate trophic transfer, especially from benthic invertebrates.

The structure and morphology of the as-prepared nanomaterials were systematically investigated. The graphene oxide (GO) was reduced and Fe3O4 nanoparticles were evenly decorated on the surface of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanosheets. The average particle size of Fe3O4 nanoparticles is about 15.3 nm. The as-prepared rGO-Fe3O4 nanocomposites exhibited a good microwave absorption performance because of the combination of graphene and magnetic Fe3O4. When the thicknesses are 1.6 mm and 6.5 mm, the reflection loss (RL) values are up to −34.4 dB and −37.5 dB, respectively. The effective bandwidths are 3.8 and 1.9 GHz.

Beschreibung: This research presents a machine vision approach to detect lesions in liver ultrasound as well as resolving some issues in ultrasound such as artifacts, speckle noise, and blurring effect. The anisotropic diffusion is modified using the edge preservation conditions which found better than traditional ones in quantitative evolution. To dig for more potential information, a learnable super-resolution (SR) is embedded into the deep CNN. The feature is fused using Gabor Wavelet Transform (GWT) and Local Binary Pattern (LBP) with a pre-trained deep CNN model. Moreover, we propose a Bayes rule-based informative patch selection approach to reduce the processing time with the selective image patches and design an algorithm to mark the lesion region from identified ultrasound image patches. To train this model, standard data ensures promising resolution. The testing phase considers generalized data with a varying resolution and test the performance of the model. Exploring cross-validation, it finds that a 5-fold strategy can successfully eradicate the overfitting problem. Experiment data are collected using 298 consecutive ultrasounds comprising 15,296 image patches. This proposed feature fusion technique confirms satisfactory performance compared to the current relevant works with an accuracy of 98.40%.

Beschreibung: Submicron biomaterials have recently been found with a wide range of applications for biomedical purposes, mostly due to a considerable decrement in size and an increment in surface area. There have been several attempts to use innovative nanoscale biomaterials for tissue repair and tissue regeneration. One of the most significant metal oxide nanoparticles (NPs), with numerous potential uses in future medicine, is engineered cerium oxide (CeO2) nanoparticles (CeONPs), also known as nanoceria. Although many advancements have been reported so far, nanotoxicological studies suggest that the nanomaterial’s characteristics lie behind its potential toxicity. Particularly, physicochemical properties can explain the positive and negative interactions between CeONPs and biosystems at molecular levels. This review represents recent advances of CeONPs in biomedical engineering, with a special focus on tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. In addition, a summary report of the toxicity evidence on CeONPs with a view toward their biomedical applications and physicochemical properties is presented. Considering the critical role of nanoengineering in the manipulation and optimization of CeONPs, it is expected that this class of nanoengineered biomaterials plays a promising role in the future of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.

Beschreibung: To prevent cracks caused by shrinkage of the deck of the Xiaoqing River Bridge, MgO concrete (MC) and steel fiber reinforced MgO concrete (SMC) were used. The deformation and strength of the deck were measured in the field, the resistance to chloride penetration of the concrete was measured in the laboratory, and the pore structure of the concrete was analyzed by a mercury intrusion porosimeter (MIP). The results showed that the expansion caused by the hydration of MgO could suppress the shrinkage of the bridge deck, and the deformation of the deck changed from −88.3 × 10−6 to 24.9 × 10−6, effectively preventing shrinkage cracks. At the same time, due to the restriction of the expansion of MgO by the steel bars, the expansion of the bridge deck in the later stage gradually stabilized, and no harmful expansion was produced. When steel fiber and MgO were used at the same time, the three-dimensional distribution of steel fiber further limited the expansion of MgO. The hydration expansion of MgO in confined space reduced the porosity of concrete, optimized the pore structure, and improved the strength and durability of concrete. The research on the performance of concrete in the in-situ test section showed that MgO and steel fiber were safe for the bridge deck, which not only solved the problem of shrinkage cracking of the bridge deck but also further improved the mechanical properties of the bridge deck.

Beschreibung: Bicelles have been intensively studied for use as drug delivery carriers and in biological studies, but their preparation with low-cost materials and via a simple process would allow their use for other purposes as well. Herein, bicelles were prepared through a semi-spontaneous method using a mixture of hydrogenated soybean lecithin (SL) and a nonionic surfactant, polyoxyethylene cholesteryl ether (ChEO10), and then we investigated the effect of composition and temperature on the structure of bicelles, which is important to design tailored systems. As the fraction of ChEO10 (XC) was increased, a bimodal particle size distribution with a small particle size of several tens of nanometers and a large particle size of several hundred nanometers was obtained, and only small particles were observed when XC ≥ 0.6, suggesting the formation of significant structure transition (liposomes to bicelles). The small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) spectrum for these particles fitted a core-shell bicelle model, providing further evidence of bicelle formation. A transition from a monomodal to a bimodal size distribution occurred as the temperature was increased, with this transition taking place at lower temperatures when higher SL-ChEO10 concentrations were used. SANS showed that this temperature-dependent size change was reversible, suggesting the SL-ChEO10 bicelles were stable against temperature, hence making them suitable for several applications.

Beschreibung: Anisotropy can influence surface function and can be an indication of processing. These influences and indications include friction, wetting, and microwear. This article studies two methods for multiscale quantification and visualization of anisotropy. One uses multiscale curvature tensor analysis and shows anisotropy in horizontal coordinates i.e., topocentric. The other uses multiple bandpass filters (also known as sliding bandpass filters) applied prior to calculating anisotropy parameters, texture aspect ratios (Str) and texture directions (Std), showing anisotropy in horizontal directions only. Topographies were studied on two milled steel surfaces, one convex with an evident large scale, cylindrical form anisotropy, the other nominally flat with smaller scale anisotropies; a µEDMed surface, an example of an isotropic surface; and an additively manufactured surface with pillar-like features. Curvature tensors contain the two principal curvatures, i.e., maximum and minimum curvatures, which are orthogonal, and their directions, at each location. Principal directions are plotted for each calculated location on each surface, at each scale considered. Histograms in horizontal coordinates show altitude and azimuth angles of principal curvatures, elucidating dominant texture directions at each scale. Str and Std do not show vertical components, i.e., altitudes, of anisotropy. Changes of anisotropy with scale categorically failed to be detected by traditional characterization methods used conventionally. These multiscale methods show clearly in several representations that anisotropy changes with scale on actual surface measurements with markedly different anisotropies.

Beschreibung: Background: Recently, the defects of the tooth surface in the cervical region are often restored using composite filling materials. It should meet the needs of the patients regarding esthetics and material stability. The aim of the study was to analyze the tooth root surface at the cervical region after the removal of the composite filling material by means of the Erbium-doped Yttrium Aluminium Garnet (Er: YAG) laser or drill using the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and fluorescence microscopy. Materials and Methods: For the purposes of this study, 14 premolar teeth (n = 14) were removed due to orthodontic reasons. The rectangular shape cavities with 3 mm in width and 1.5 mm in height were prepared with a 0.8 mm bur on high-speed contra-angle in the tooth surface just below cemento-enamel junction (CEJ) and filled with the composite material. The composite material was removed with the Er: YAG laser at a power of 3.4 W, energy 170 mJ, frequency 20 Hz, pulse duration 300 μs, tip diameter 0.8 mm, air/fluid cooling 3 mL/s, and time of irradiation: 6 sec, at a distance from teeth of 2 mm (G1 group, n = 7) or a high-speed contra-angle bur (G2 group, n = 7). After the removal of composite material, the surfaces of teeth were examined using the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and fluorescence microscopy. Results: The Er: YAG irradiation allowed to remove completely the composite material from the tooth cavity. The study confirmed, that the ends of collagen fibers were only partially denatured after the Er: YAG laser application. Conclusion: It has been proved that using the Er: YAG laser is an effective and safe method of composite removal for the dentin surface.

Beschreibung: Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) is a conjugated polymer, which recently drew a lot of attention as a metal-free and UV and visible light responsive photocatalyst in the field of solar energy conversion and environmental remediation. This is due to its appealing electronic band structure, high physicochemical stability and earth-abundant nature. In the present work, bulk g-C3N4 was synthesized by thermal decomposition of melamine. This material was further exfoliated by thermal treatment. S-doped samples were prepared from thiourea or further treatment of exfoliated g-C3N4 by mesylchloride. Synthesized materials were applied for photocatalytic removal of air pollutants (acetaldehyde and NOx) according to the ISO 22197 and ISO 22197-1 methodology. The efficiency of acetaldehyde removal under UV irradiation was negligible for all g-C3N4 samples. This can be explained by the fact that g-C3N4 under irradiation does not directly form hydroxyl radicals, which are the primary oxidation species in acetaldehyde oxidation. It was proved by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy that the dominant species formed on the irradiated surface of g-C3N4 was the superoxide radical. Its production was responsible for a very high NOx removal efficiency not only under UV irradiation (which was comparable with that of TiO2), but also under visible irradiation.

Beschreibung: The dynamic mechanical behaviors of Hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) propellant was studied by a split Hopkinson pressure bar apparatus (SHPB) at strain rates ranging from 103 to 104 s−1. The obtained stress–strain curves indicated that the mechanical features, such as ultimate stress and strain energy, were strongly dependent on the strain rate. The real time deformation and fracture evolution of HTPB propellant were captured by a high-speed digital camera accompanied with an SHPB setup. Furthermore, microscopic observation for the post-test specimen was conducted to explore the different damage mechanisms under various conditions of impact loading. The dominated damage characteristics of HTPB propellant were changed from debonding and matrix tearing to multiple cracking modes of ammonium perchlorate (AP) particles, along with the increase of the strain rate. For the first time, the influence of AP particle density on the dynamic response of HTPB propellant was studied by analyzing the strain-rate sensitivity (SRS) index of HTPB propellant with two different filler content (80 wt.% and 85 wt.%), which deduced from a power function of ultimate stress and strain energy density. The result of this study is of significance for evaluating the structural integrity and security of HTPB propellant.

Beschreibung: Patients with RASopathy Neurofibromatosis 1 (NF1) are at a markedly increased risk of the development of benign and malignant tumors. Malignant tumors are often recalcitrant to treatments and associated with poor survival; however, no chemopreventative strategies currently exist. We thus evaluated the effect of mebendazole, alone or in combination with cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitors, on the prevention of NF1-related malignancies in a cis Nf1+/−;Tp53+/− (NPcis) mouse model of NF1. Our in vitro findings showed that mebendazole (MBZ) inhibits the growth of NF1-related malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs) through a reduction in activated guanosine triphosphate (GTP)-bound Ras. The daily MBZ treatment of NPcis mice dosed at 195 mg/kg daily, initiated 60 days after birth, substantially delayed the formation of solid malignancies and increased median survival (p 〈 0.0001). Compared to placebo-treated mice, phosphorylated extracellular signal-regulated kinase (pERK) levels were decreased in the malignancies of MBZ-treated mice. The combination of MBZ with COX-2 inhibitor celecoxib (CXB) further enhanced the chemopreventative effect in female mice beyond each drug alone. These findings demonstrate the feasibility of a prevention strategy for malignancy development in high-risk NF1 individuals.

Beschreibung: QR (quick response) Codes are one of the most popular types of two-dimensional (2D) matrix codes currently used in a wide variety of fields. Two-dimensional matrix codes, compared to 1D bar codes, can encode significantly more data in the same area. We have compared algorithms capable of localizing multiple QR Codes in an image using typical finder patterns, which are present in three corners of a QR Code. Finally, we present a novel approach to identify perspective distortion by analyzing the direction of horizontal and vertical edges and by maximizing the standard deviation of horizontal and vertical projections of these edges. This algorithm is computationally efficient, works well for low-resolution images, and is also suited to real-time processing.

Beschreibung: High strain rate biaxial forging (HSRBF) was performed on AZ31 magnesium alloy to an accumulated strain of ΣΔε = 1.32, the related microstructure, texture and mechanical properties were investigated. It was found that the microstructure evolution can be divided into two steps during HSRBF. In the early forging processes, the refinement of the grain is obvious, the size of ~10 μm can be achieved; this can be attributed to the unique mechanisms including the formation of high density twins ({1012} extension twin and {1011}-{1012} secondary twin) and subsequently twining induced DRX (dynamic recrystallization). The thermal activated temperature increases with the increase of accumulated strain and results in the grain growth. Rolling texture is the main texture in the high strain rate biaxial forged (HSRBFed) alloys, the intensity of which decreases with the accumulated strain. Moreover, the basal pole rotates towards the direction of forging direction (FD) after each forging pass, and a basal texture with basal pole inclining at 15–20° from the rolling direction (RD) is formed in the full recrystallized HSRBFed alloys. The grain refinement and tiled texture are attributed to the excellent strength and ductility of HSRMBFed alloys with full recrystallized structure. As the accumulated strain is ΣΔε = 0.88, the HSRMBFed alloy displays an outstanding combination of mechanical properties, the ultimate tensile strength (UTS) is 331.2 MPa and the elongation is 25.1%.

Beschreibung: Since successful reforestation after the 1970s, Korean red pine (Pinus densiflora) forests have become the most important coniferous forests in Korea. However, the scarcity of evidence for biodiversity responses hinders understanding of the conservation value of Korean red pine forests. This study was conducted to explore the patterns of carabid beetle diversity and assemblage structures between broad-leaved deciduous forests and P. densiflora forests in the temperate region of central Korea. Carabid beetles were sampled by pitfall trapping from 2013 to 2014. A total of 66 species were identified from 9541 carabid beetles. Species richness in broad-leaved deciduous forests was significantly higher than that in pine forests. In addition, the species composition of carabid beetles in broad-leaved deciduous forests differed from that of P. densiflora forests. More endemic, brachypterous, forest specialists, and carnivorous species were distributed in broad-leaved deciduous forests than in P. densiflora forests. Consequently, carabid beetle assemblages in central Korea are distinctively divided by forest type based on ecological and biological traits (e.g., endemisim, habitat types, wing forms, and feeding guilds). However, possible variation of the response of beetle communities to the growth of P. densiflora forests needs to be considered for forest management based on biodiversity conservation in temperate regions, because conifer plantations in this study are still young, i.e., approximately 30–40-years old.

Beschreibung: We assessed the abundance and composition of nematode communities in soil under herbaceous vegetation in reclaimed landfill sites at different ages after closure (3, 10 and 14 years) compared to those in neighboring semi-natural grazed grasslands (reference sites). We further applied network analysis based on the co-occurrence patterns of nematodes. Nematode abundance decreased between 3 and10 years of regeneration, but significantly increased from 10 to 14 years of regeneration. The number and identity of genera were comparable along the succession; however, there were dissimilarities in community composition during early- and mid-succession. The diversity, community composition and abundance at the sites after 14 years of regeneration converged with those at the reference sites. Moreover, changes during succession were not accompanied by the maturation of the soil food web, as demonstrated by Enrichment and Channel indices. In all the networks, centrality and modularity metrics differed significantly from those for random networks, whereas cohesion metrics showed no difference. All the networks exhibited Small-worldness indices higher than one, demonstrating that the networks of the interactions among genera at all the sites shared features that matched both random and non-random networks. The succession trajectory in reclaimed landfills was represented by a sequence of changes that differed in relation to the variable under consideration; network parameters tended to converge with those of a relatively resistant reference community, while the Enrichment and Channel indices did not. Additionally, the succession trajectory was not linear or steady; only the Channel index and Worldness index showed linear responses to succession time. However, across all the successional stages, the resource status remained basal or degraded while the nematode communities had an enhanced ability to cope with sudden changes.

Beschreibung: In this study, we developed injectable intratympanic hyaluronic acid (HA) depots for the treatment of hearing loss. We prepared an injectable click-crosslinking formulation by modifying HA with tetrazine (HA-TET) and trans-cyclooctene (HA-TCO), which crosslinked to form an HA depot (Cx-HA). Preparation of the click-crosslinking HA formulation was facile, and Cx-HA depot formation was reproducible. Additionally, the Cx-HA hydrogel was significantly stiffer than HA hydrogel. To monitor the degradation pattern of hydrogels, we mixed a zwitterionic near-infrared (NIR) fluorophore (e.g., ZW800-1C) in the click-crosslinking HA formulation. Then, HA-TET and HA-TCO solutions containing ZW800-1C were loaded separately into the compartments of a dual-barrel syringe for intratympanic injection. The Cx-HA depots formed quickly, and an extended residence time in the tympanic cavity was confirmed by performing NIR fluorescence imaging. We have successfully prepared an injectable click-crosslinking HA formulation that has promise as an intratympanic drug depot.

Beschreibung: We report on the MoO3 oxides and their derivatives on microscopic 2H MoS2 flakes oxidized in air and high relative humidity at a moderate temperature range below 410 °C. We combine XPS and AFM measurements such as topography, friction, creation of nanoscale ripples and scratches on the MoS2 flakes deposited on Si substrates. We detect MoO3 oxides mostly by measuring selected nanomechanical properties of the MoO3 layer, such as its compressive mechanical stress at the plastic yield. We discuss basal surface coverage of the single MoS2 flakes by the MoO3 oxides. We discuss conditions for appearance of all possible MoO3 oxide derivatives, such as molybdenum(VI) hydroxyoxides and MoO3 hydrates. Our findings agree with an expected mechanistic switch in thermal oxidation in water vapors vs. air.

Beschreibung: The technology is presented for modeling and prediction of marine hydrophysical fields based on the 4D variational data assimilation technique developed at the Marchuk Institute of Numerical Mathematics, Russian Academy of Sciences (INM RAS). The technology is based on solving equations of marine hydrodynamics using multicomponent splitting, thereby solving an optimality system that includes adjoint equations and covariance matrices of observation errors. The hydrodynamic model is described by primitive equations in the sigma-coordinate system, which is solved by finite-difference methods. The technology includes original algorithms for solving the problems of variational data assimilation using modern iterative processes with a special choice of iterative parameters. The methods and technology are illustrated by the example of solving the problem of circulation of the Baltic Sea with 4D variational data assimilation of sea surface temperature information.

Beschreibung: In recent years in the field of biomechanics, the intensive development of various experimental methods has been observed. The implementation of virtual studies that for a long time have been successfully used in technical sciences also represents a new trend in dental engineering. Among these methods, finite element analysis (FEA) deserves special attention. FEA is a method used to analyze stresses and strains in complex mechanical systems. It enables the mathematical conversion and analysis of mechanical properties of a geometric object. Since the mechanical properties of the human skeleton cannot be examined in vivo, a discipline in which FEA has found particular application is oral and maxillofacial surgery. In this review we summarize the application of FEA in particular oral and maxillofacial fields such as traumatology, orthognathic surgery, reconstructive surgery and implantology presented in the current literature. Based on the available literature, we discuss the methodology and results of research where FEA has been used to understand the pathomechanism of fractures, identify optimal osteosynthesis methods, plan reconstructive operations and design intraosseous implants or osteosynthesis elements. As well as indicating the benefits of FEA in mechanical parameter analysis, we also point out the assumptions and simplifications that are commonly used. The understanding of FEA’s opportunities and advantages as well as its limitations and main flaws is crucial to fully exploit its potential.

Beschreibung: The concrete-filled double skin steel tube (CFDST) is a more viable option compared to a concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) due to consisting a hollow section, while degradation is enhanced simply by using carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP). Hence, the stabilization of a concrete’s ductile strength needs high- performance fiber-reinforced cementitious conmposite. This study investigates the behavior of high-performance fiber-reinforced cementitious composite-filled double-skin steel tube (HPCFDST) beams strengthened longitudinally with various layers, lengths, and configurtion of CFRP sheets. The findings showed that, with increased CFRP layers, the moment capacity and flexural stiffness values of the retrofitted HPCFDST beams have significantly improved. For an instant, the moment capacity of HPCFDST beams improved by approximately 28.5% and 32.6% when they were wrapped partially along 100% with two and three layers, respectively, compared to the control beam. Moreover, the moment capacity of the HPCFDST beam using two partial layers of CFRP along 75% of its sufficient length was closed to the findings of the beam with two full CFRP layers. For energy absorption, the results showed a vast disparity. Only the two layers with a 100% full length and partial wrapping showed increasing performance over the control. Furthermore, the typical failure mode of HPCFDST beams was observed to be local buckling at the top surface near the point of loading and CFRP rapture at the bottom of effect length.

Beschreibung: Mathematical models are essential for the design and control of offshore systems, to simulate the fluid–structure interactions and predict the motions and the structural loads. In the development and derivation of the models, simplifying assumptions are normally required, usually implying linear kinematics and hydrodynamics. However, while the assumption of linear, small amplitude motion fits traditional offshore problems, in normal operational conditions (it is desirable to stabilize ships, boats, and offshore platforms), large motion and potential dynamic instability may arise (e.g., harsh sea conditions). Furthermore, such nonlinearities are particularly evident in wave energy converters, as large motions are expected (and desired) to enhance power extraction. The inadequacy of linear models has led to an increasing number of publications and codes implementing nonlinear hydrodynamics. However, nonlinear kinematics has received very little attention, as few models yet consider six degrees of freedom and large rotations. This paper implements a nonlinear hydrodynamic and kinematic model for an archetypal floating structure, commonplace in offshore applications: an axisymmetric spar-buoy. The influence of nonlinear dynamics and kinematics causing coupling between modes of motion are demonstrated. The nonlinear dynamics are shown to cause parametric resonance in the roll and pitch degrees of freedom, while the nonlinear kinematics are shown to potentially cause numerical instability in the yaw degree of freedom. A case study example is presented to highlight the nonlinear dynamic and kinematic effects, and the importance of including a nominal restoring term in the yaw DoF presented.

Beschreibung: Visible near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy (VNIRS) and laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) are potential methods for the rapid and less expensive assessment of soil quality indicators (SQIs). The specific objective of this study was to compare VNIRS and LIBS for assessing SQIs. Data was collected from over 140 soil samples taken from multiple agricultural management systems in New Mexico, belonging to arid and semiarid agroecosystems. Sampled sites included New Mexico State University Agricultural Science Center research fields and several commercial farm fields in New Mexico. Partial least squares regression (PLSR) was used to establish predictive relationships between spectral data and SQIs. Fifteen soil measurements were modeled including the soil organic matter (SOM), permanganate oxidizable carbon (POXC), total microbial biomass (TMB), total bacteria biomass (TBB), total fungi biomass (TFB), mean weight diameter of dry aggregates (MWD), aggregates 2–4 mm (AGG 〉 2 mm), aggregates 〈 0.25 mm (AGG 〈 0.25 mm), wet aggregate stability (WAS), electrical conductivity (EC), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), sodium (Na), and iron (Fe). Overall, calibrations based on measurements irrespective of locations performed better for LIBS and combined VNIRS-LIBS. Measurements separated according to locations highly improved the quality of prediction for VNIRS as compared to combined locations. For example, the prediction R2 values for regression of VNIRS were 0.19 for SOM, 0.30 for POXC, 0.24 for MWD, 0.15 for AGG 〉 2 mm, and 0.13 for EC in combined datasets irrespective of location. When separated according to locations, for one of the locations, the predictive R2 values for VNIRS were 0.48 for SOM, 0.70 for POXC, 0.67 for MWD, 0.60 for AGG 〉 2 mm, and 0.51 for EC. The prediction values varied with the sampling time for both LIBS and VNIRS. For example, the prediction values of some SQIs using VNIRS were higher in samples collected in winter for measurements, including SOM (0.90), MWD (0.96), WAS (0.66), and EC (0.94). Using the VNIRS, the corresponding predictive values for the same SQIs were lower for samples collected in the fall (SOM (0.61), MWD (0.45), WAS (0.46), and EC (0.65)). While this study illustrates the prospects of VNIRS and LIBS for estimating SQIs, a more comprehensive evaluation, using a larger regional dataset, is required to understand how the site and soil factors affect VNIRS and LIBS, in order to enhance the utility of these methods for soil quality assessment in arid and semiarid agroecosystems.

Beschreibung: This study aims at introducing the back stress of anisotropic strain-hardening into the crystal plasticity theory and demonstrating the rationality of this crystal plasticity model to describe the evolution of the subsequent yield surface of polycrystalline aluminum at the mesoscopic scale under complex pre-cyclic loading paths. By using two different scale finite element models, namely a global finite element model (GFEM) as the same size of the thin-walled tube specimen used in the experiments and a 3D cubic polycrystalline aggregate representative volume element (RVE) model, the evolution of the subsequent yield surface for different unloading cases after 30 pre-cycles is further performed by experiments and numerical simulations within a crystal plasticity finite element (CPFE) frame. Results show that the size and shape of the subsequent yield surfaces are extremely sensitive to the chosen offset strain and the pre-cyclic loading direction, which present pronounced anisotropic hardening through a translation and a distortion of the yield surface characterized by the obvious “sharp corner” in the pre-deformation direction and “flat” in the reverse direction by the definition of small offset strain, while the subsequent yield surface exhibits isotropic hardening reflected by the von Mises circle to be distorted into an ellipse by the definition of large offset strain. In addition, the heterogeneous properties of equivalent plastic strain increment are further discussed under different offset strain conditions. Modeling results from this study show that the heterogeneity of plastic deformation decreases as a law of fraction exponential function with the increasing offset strain. The above analysis indicates that anisotropic hardening of the yield surface is correlated with heterogeneous deformation caused by crystal microstructure and crystal slip. The crystal plasticity model based on the above microscopic mechanism can accurately capture the directional hardening features of the yield surface.

Beschreibung: Well-defined linear and multi-arm star polymer structures were used as the templates for in situ synthesis and stabilization of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). This approach led to hybrid nanomaterials with high stability and antibacterial activity to both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial strains. The ecologically friendly so called “green” synthesis of nanomaterials was performed through AgNPs preparation in the aqueous solutions of star and linear poly(N,N′-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate)s (PDMAEMAs); the process was followed with time. The size, shape, and zeta potential of the obtained hybrids were determined. To our knowledge, this is the first time that the antibacterial activity of PDMAEMA hybrid nanomaterial against Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa was investigated and assessed by minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum biocidal concentration (MBC). Completely quaternized with ethyl bromide, star and linear PDMAEMAs were used in comparative biological tests. The modification of the polymers with in situ-formed AgNPs increased the antibacterial properties against all studied strains of bacteria by several times in comparison to non-modified polymers and quaternized polymers. These results yield novel nanohybrid materials that can be useful for applications in medicine and biology.

Beschreibung: Horizontal gene transfer (HGT) plays an important role for evolutionary innovations within prokaryotic communities and is a crucial event for their survival. Several computational approaches have arisen to identify HGT events in recipient genomes. However, this has been proven to be a complex task due to the generation of a great number of false positives and the prediction disagreement among the existing methods. Phylogenetic reconstruction methods turned out to be the most reliable ones, but they are not extensible to all genes/species and are computationally demanding when dealing with large datasets. In contrast, the so-called surrogate methods that use heuristic solutions either based on nucleotide composition patterns or phyletic distribution of BLAST hits can be applied easily to the genomic scale, but they fail in identifying common HGT events. Here, we present ShadowCaster, a hybrid approach that sequentially combines nucleotide composition-based predictions by support vector machines (SVMs) under the shadow of phylogenetic models independent of tree reconstruction, to improve the detection of HGT events in prokaryotes. ShadowCaster successfully predicted close and distant HGT events in both artificial and bacterial genomes. ShadowCaster detected HGT related to heavy metal resistance in the genome of Rhodanobacter denitrificans with higher accuracy than the most popular state-of-the-art computational approaches, encompassing most of the predicted cases made by other methods. ShadowCaster is released at the GitHub platform as an open-source software under the GPLv3 license.

The aim of this study was to quantify the morphological signature of roping to link roughness results with five levels of roping identified with visual inspection. First, the multiscale analysis of roughness showed that the texture aspect ratio Str computed with a low-pass filter of 32 µm gave a clear separation between the acceptable levels of roping and the non-acceptable levels (rejected sheets). To obtain a gradation description of roping instead of a binary description, a methodology based on the use of the autocorrelation function was created. It consisted of several steps: a low-pass filtering of the autocorrelation function at 150 µm, the segmentation of the autocorrelation into four stabilized portions, and finally, the computation of isotropy and the root-mean-square roughness Sq on the obtained quarters of function. The use of the isotropy combined with the root-mean-square roughness Sq led to a clear separation of the five levels of roping: the acceptable levels of roping corresponded to strong isotropy (values larger than 10%) coupled with low root-mean-square roughness Sq. Both methodologies can be used to quantitatively describe surface morphology of roping in order to improve our understanding of the roping phenomenon.

Beschreibung: Double-tee profiles are the most popular members in Europe and the USA for steel structures. However, more efficient cross-sections, such as circular hollow sections (CHSs), could be adopted, since they can provide higher aesthetic, economic and mechanical benefits, with the only drawback of more complex connections such as in the case of I-beams welded to the external surface of circular hollow profiles. Based on the ring model theory, developed by Togo, a rule to design the flexural resistance of such a connection has been included in the Eurocode 3 part 1.8, while no formulations are provided to predict the corresponding initial stiffness. The present work aims at filling this knowledge gap, adopting an approach based on experimental, numerical and analytical work. A monotonic and a cyclic test have been performed on two beam-to-column sub-assemblies; the experimental outcomes have been exploited to validate a finite element (FE) model developed in Abaqus and used to numerically perform the monotonic loading simulations of 30 joints. Afterwards, starting from the extracted information about stiffness, a regression analysis was carried out to define the coefficient of a design equation analytically derived applying the component method approach. The regression analysis is characterized by a coefficient of variation equal to 0.19.

Beschreibung: Grouted soil–concrete interfaces exist in bored piles with post-grouting in pile tip or sides and they have a substantial influence on pile skin friction. To study the effect of grouting volume on the shearing characteristics of the interface between cohesive soil and concrete piles with different roughness, grouting equipment and a direct shear apparatus were combined to carry out a total of 48 groups of direct shear tests on cohesive soil–concrete interfaces incorporating the grouting process. The test results showed that the shear behavior of the grouted cohesive soil–concrete interface was improved mainly because increasing the grouting volume and roughness increased the interfacial apparent cohesion. In contrast, increasing the grouting volume and roughness had no obvious increasing effects on the interfacial friction angle. Interfacial grouting contributed to the transition in the grouted cohesive soil from shrinkage to dilation: as the grouting volume increased, the shrinkage became weaker and the dilation became more obvious. The shear band exhibited a parabolic distribution rather than a uniform distribution along the shearing direction and that the shear band thickness was greater in the shearing direction, and it will become thicker with increasing grouting volume or roughness. The analysis can help to understand the shear characteristics of soil–pile interface in studying the vertical bearing properties of pile with post-grouting in tip or sides.

Beschreibung: This paper focuses on the effects of transverse shear and root rotations in both symmetric and asymmetrical end-notched flexure (AENF) interlaminar fracture toughness tests. A theoretical model is developed, whereas the test specimen is subdivided into four regions joined by a rigid interface. The differential equations for the deflection and rotations of each region are solved within both the Euler–Bernoulli simple beam theory (SBT) and the more refined Timoshenko beam theory (TBT). A concise analytical equation is derived for the AENF deflection profile, compliance, and transverse shearing forces as a function of the specimen geometry, stacking sequence, delamination length, and fixture span. Modeling results are compared with numerical finite element analyses, obtaining a very good agreement. Performed analyses suggest that even in the case of symmetrical and unidirectional laminates considered as pure mode II fracture, a complex compression/tension and bending moment state is present, as well as a slight contribution of anti-planar shear at the vicinity of the crack tip.

Beschreibung: In this work, synthesis and investigations on chitosan-based hydrogels modified with Aloe vera juice are presented. These materials were synthesized by UV radiation. Investigations involved analysis of chemical structure by FTIR spectroscopy, sorption properties in physiological liquids, strength properties by texture analyzer, surface topography by Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM technique), and in vitro cytotoxicity by MTT test using L929 murine fibroblasts. Particular attention was focused both on determining the impact of the amount and the molecular weight of the crosslinker used for the synthesis as well as on the introduced additive on the properties of hydrogels. It was proven that modified hydrogels exhibited higher swelling ability. Introduced additive affected the tensile strength of hydrogels—modified materials showed 23% higher elongation. The greater amount of the crosslinker used in the synthesis, the more compact the structure, leading to the lower elasticity and lower sorption of hydrogels was reported. Above 95%, murine fibroblasts remained viable after 24 h incubation with hydrogels. It indicates that tested materials did not exhibit cytotoxicity toward these lines. Additionally, materials with Aloe vera juice were characterized by lower surface roughness. Conducted investigations allowed us to state that such modified hydrogels may be considered as useful for biomedical purposes.

Beschreibung: Mechanical performance of cast aluminum alloys is strongly affected by the defects formed during solidification. For example, fractography studies of the fatigue specimens have shown that fatigue failure in aluminum castings containing defects is almost always initiated from defects, among which pores are most detrimental. However, elimination of these pores is neither always economically nor technically possible. This work characterizes defects in high pressure die cast aluminum alloy as an illustrative material, but the methods used can be applicable to other types of castings and defects. The defects were evaluated using metallography as well as micro-computed tomography techniques. The variability of defects between the specimens of two sizes as well as different porosity levels are studied statistically. The distributions of defects based on location within the specimens are also analyzed. Moreover, the maximum defect size within the specimens are estimated using extreme value statistics, which can be used as an input to fatigue life prediction models. Extreme value statistics is applied on both 2D and 3D defect data. The accuracy of each approach is verified by comparing the estimated maximum defect size within the specimens with the maximum observed defects on fracture surfaces of fatigue specimens.

Beschreibung: The global spread of COVID-19, caused by pathogenic severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) underscores the need for an imminent response from medical research communities to better understand this rapidly spreading infection. Employing multiple bioinformatics and computational pipelines on transcriptome data from primary normal human bronchial epithelial cells (NHBE) during SARS-CoV-2 infection revealed activation of several mechanistic networks, including those involved in immunoglobulin G (IgG) and interferon lambda (IFNL) in host cells. Induction of acute inflammatory response and activation of tumor necrosis factor (TNF) was prominent in SARS-CoV-2 infected NHBE cells. Additionally, disease and functional analysis employing ingenuity pathway analysis (IPA) revealed activation of functional categories related to cell death, while those associated with viral infection and replication were suppressed. Several interferon (IFN) responsive gene targets (IRF9, IFIT1, IFIT2, IFIT3, IFITM1, MX1, OAS2, OAS3, IFI44 and IFI44L) were highly upregulated in SARS-CoV-2 infected NBHE cell, implying activation of antiviral IFN innate response. Gene ontology and functional annotation of differently expressed genes in patient lung tissues with COVID-19 revealed activation of antiviral response as the hallmark. Mechanistic network analysis in IPA identified 14 common activated, and 9 common suppressed networks in patient tissue, as well as in the NHBE cell model, suggesting a plausible role for these upstream regulator networks in the pathogenesis of COVID-19. Our data revealed expression of several viral proteins in vitro and in patient-derived tissue, while several host-derived long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) were identified. Our data highlights activation of IFN response as the main hallmark associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection in vitro and in human, and identified several differentially expressed lncRNAs during the course of infection, which could serve as disease biomarkers, while their precise role in the host response to SARS-CoV-2 remains to be investigated.

Beschreibung: The first technical factor involved in maritime accidents is related to the lack of intact stability. The current stability criterion, based on fixing a minimum value for each of the different static and dynamic righting arms, is not regarded as satisfactory. Correspondingly, a new criterion based on the transverse metacentric height, dynamic stability up to 70° heel, and critical wave height were considered for fishing vessels less than or equal to 24 m in length. This can be understood as an improvement on the Rahola criterion or an equivalent criterion of dead ship capsize mode, as assumed in the second-generation stability criteria. The proposed criterion, when used in a real case study on the Galician fishing grounds, achieved higher precision. The few vessels that did not comply with the proposed requirement can continue to operate in the area if the Meteorological and Oceanographic Coefficient (CMO) is considered at the time we employ our criteria. As a result, their activity is limited to only a few fishing grounds where adequate weather conditions exist. Finally, the methodology developed can be easily extrapolated to other regions in the world.

Beschreibung: Semen changes the gene expression in endometrial and oviductal tissues modulating important processes for reproduction. We tested the hypothesis that mating and/or sperm-free seminal plasma deposition in the reproductive tract affect the expression of genes associated with sperm-lining epithelium interactions, ovulation, and pre-implantation effects (nerve growth factor, NGF; α/β hydrolase domain-containing protein 2, ABHD2; C-terminal tensin-like protein, CTEN or TNS4; and versican, VCAN) in the period 10–72 h post-mating. In Experiment 1, does (n = 9) were treated with gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) (control), GnRH-stimulated, and vaginally infused with sperm-free seminal plasma (SP-AI), or GnRH-stimulated and naturally mated (NM). In Experiment 2, does (n = 15) were GnRH-stimulated and naturally mated. Samples were retrieved from the internal reproductive tracts (cervix-to-infundibulum) 20 h post-treatment (Experiment 1) or sequentially collected at 10, 24, 36, 68, or 72 h post-mating (Experiment 2, 3 does/period). All samples were processed for gene expression analysis by quantitative PCR. Data showed an upregulation of endometrial CTEN and NGF by NM, but not by SP-AI. The findings suggest that the NGF gene affects the reproductive tract of the doe during ovulation and beyond, influencing the maternal environment during early embryonic development.

Beschreibung: The number of cytosine-thymine-guanine (CTG) repeats (‘CTG expansion size’) in the 3′untranslated region (UTR) region of the dystrophia myotonica-protein kinase (DMPK) gene is a hallmark of myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1), which has been related to age of disease onset and clinical severity. However, accurate determination of CTG expansion size is challenging due to its characteristic instability. We compared five different approaches (heat pulse extension polymerase chain reaction [PCR], long PCR-Southern blot [with three different primers sets—1, 2 and 3] and small pool [SP]-PCR) to estimate CTG expansion size in the progenitor allele as well as the most abundant CTG expansion size, in 15 patients with DM1. Our results indicated variability between the methods (although we found no overall differences between long PCR 1 and 2 and SP-PCR, respectively). While keeping in mind the limited sample size of our patient cohort, SP-PCR appeared as the most suitable technique, with an inverse significant correlation found between CTG expansion size of the progenitor allele, as determined by this method, and age of disease onset (r = −0.734, p = 0.016). Yet, in light of the variability of the results obtained with the different methods, we propose that an international agreement is needed to determine which is the most suitable method for assessing CTG expansion size in DM1.

Beschreibung: The pandemic caused by the spread of SARS-CoV-2 has led to considerable interest in its evolutionary origin and genome structure. Here, we analyzed mutation patterns in 34 human SARS-CoV-2 isolates and a closely related RaTG13 isolated from Rhinolophus affinis (a horseshoe bat). We also evaluated the CpG dinucleotide contents in SARS-CoV-2 and other human and animal coronavirus genomes. Out of 1136 single nucleotide variations (~4% divergence) between human SARS-CoV-2 and bat RaTG13, 682 (60%) can be attributed to C〉U and U〉C substitutions, far exceeding other types of substitutions. An accumulation of C〉U mutations was also observed in SARS-CoV2 variants that arose within the human population. Globally, the C〉U substitutions increased the frequency of codons for hydrophobic amino acids in SARS-CoV-2 peptides, while U〉C substitutions decreased it. In contrast to most other coronaviruses, both SARS-CoV-2 and RaTG13 exhibited CpG depletion in their genomes. The data suggest that C-to-U conversion mediated by C deamination played a significant role in the evolution of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus. We hypothesize that the high frequency C〉U transitions reflect virus adaptation processes in their hosts, and that SARS-CoV-2 could have been evolving for a relatively long period in humans following the transfer from animals before spreading worldwide.

Beschreibung: The range of selective laser sintering (SLS) materials is currently limited, and the available materials are often of high cost. Moreover, the mechanical strength of wood–plastic SLS parts is low, which restricts the application of a SLS technology. A new composite material has been proposed to address these issues, while simultaneously valorizing agricultural and forestry waste. This composite presents several advantages, including reduced pollution associated with waste disposal and reduced CO2 emission with the SLS process in addition to good mechanical strength. In this article, a novel and low-cost Prosopis chilensis/polyethersulfone composite (PCPC) was used as a primary material for SLS. The formability of PCPC with various raw material ratios was investigated via single-layer experiments, while the mechanical properties and dimensional accuracy of the parts produced using the various PCPC ratios were evaluated. Further, the microstructure and particle distribution in the PCPC pieces were examined using scanning electron microscopy. The result showed that the SLS part produced via 10/90 (wt/wt) PCPC exhibited the best mechanical strength and forming quality compared to other ratios and pure polyethersulfone (PES), where bending and tensile strengths of 10.78 and 4.94 MPa were measured. To improve the mechanical strength, post-processing infiltration was used and the PCPC-waxed parts were enhanced to 12.38 MPa and 5.73 MPa for bending and tensile strength.

Beschreibung: Ordered mesoporous Zr-Al composite oxide materials (denoted as OMZA-x) with different Zr contents have been synthesized by a solvent evaporation-inducing self-assembly procedure associated with a thermal treatment at 100 °C. A cooperative co-assembly process of amphiphilic triblock copolymer F127 molecules and inorganic hydroxyl species originated from the hydrolysis of Zr and Al precursors was proposed to explain the synthesis of OMZA-x. Compared to ordered mesoporous alumina prepared without introducing Zr species, the resultant OMZA-x exhibited a much more ordered mesostructure combined with a distinct increase in the pore volume and specific surface area. The highly homogenous doping of Zr into the mesopore walls together with the formation of Zr-O-Al bonds can effectively enhance the thermal and hydrothermal stability of OMZA-x. For instance, the ordered mesostructure and excellent textural properties of OMZA-6 prepared with the optimum atomic ratio of Al to Zr of 6 could be well maintained even after a high-temperature treatment at 1000 °C for 1 h or a hydrothermal treatment at 100 °C for 6 h.

Beschreibung: The so-called Born–Huang ansatz is a fundamental tool in the context of ab-initio molecular dynamics, viz., it allows effectively separating fast and slow degrees of freedom and thus treating electrons and nuclei with different mathematical footings. Here, we consider the use of a Born–Huang-like expansion of the three-dimensional time-dependent Schrödinger equation to separate transport and confinement degrees of freedom in electron transport problems that involve geometrical constrictions. The resulting scheme consists of an eigenstate problem for the confinement degrees of freedom (in the transverse direction) whose solution constitutes the input for the propagation of a set of coupled one-dimensional equations of motion for the transport degree of freedom (in the longitudinal direction). This technique achieves quantitative accuracy using an order less computational resources than the full dimensional simulation for a typical two-dimensional geometrical constriction and upto three orders for three-dimensional constriction.

Beschreibung: The clinical behavior of thyroid cancers is seen to reflect inherent transcriptional activities of mutated genes and trophic effects on tumors of circulating pituitary thyrotropin (TSH). The thyroid hormone, L-thyroxine (T4), has been shown to stimulate proliferation of a large number of different forms of cancer. This activity of T4 is mediated by a cell surface receptor on the extracellular domain of integrin αvβ3. In this brief review, we describe what is known about T4 as a circulating trophic factor for differentiated (papillary and follicular) thyroid cancers. Given T4′s cancer-stimulating activity in differentiated thyroid cancers, it was not surprising to find that genomic actions of T4 were anti-apoptotic. Transduction of the T4-generated signal at the integrin primarily involved mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK). In thyroid C cell-origin medullary carcinoma of the thyroid (MTC), effects of thyroid hormone analogues, such as tetraiodothyroacetic acid (tetrac), include pro-angiogenic and apoptosis-linked genes. Tetrac is an inhibitor of the actions of T4 at αvβ3, and it is assumed, but not yet proved, that the anti-angiogenic and pro-apoptotic actions of tetrac in MTC cells are matched by T4 effects that are pro-angiogenic and anti-apoptotic. We also note that papillary thyroid carcinoma cells may express the leptin receptor, and circulating leptin from adipocytes may stimulate tumor cell proliferation. Transcription was stimulated by leptin in anaplastic, papillary, and follicular carcinomas of genes involved in invasion, such as matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). In summary, thyroid hormone analogues may act at their receptor on integrin αvβ3 in a variety of types of thyroid cancer to modulate transcription of genes relevant to tumor invasiveness, apoptosis, and angiogenesis. These effects are independent of TSH.

Beschreibung: Marine protected areas have been established as essential components for managing and protecting coral reefs to mitigate natural and anthropogenic stressors. One noteworthy example within the Mexican Caribbean is the Arrecife de Puerto Morelos National Park (APMNP), where several studies on the coral communities have been carried out since 2006. In June 2019, we conducted a study in eight sites of the APMNP applying a coral reef assessment method based on biological indicators of both the benthos and the fish communities. In this paper, we present the quantitative results of our study and provide a qualitative criterion assessing seven condition indexes through a scoring system. We also present a statistical comparison with a previous study carried out in 2016. The general status of coral reefs was classified as regular due to the low values of coral recruitment rate and biomass of key commercial fish species. However, living coral cover average was above 20%, with a slight dominance of framework building coral species and the presence of low values of fleshy algae cover, these being positive indicators. Our study found a higher proportion of reef promoter elements and a lower proportion of detractors, compared to a previous study carried out in 2016.

Beschreibung: The study of tardigrade diversity in Mexico is at early stage of development, to date, 56 extant species have been reported. To identify the tardigrade fauna associated with mosses in the Iztaccíhuatl volcano, we performed a systematic sampling along an altitudinal and multi-habitat gradient. A total of 57 moss samples were collected, 233 adults, 20 exuviae, and 40 free-laid tardigrade eggs were extracted from them. Five species were identified, and three putative species were determined. Diphascon mitrense and Minibiotus sidereus represents new records for Mexico and North America, while Adropion scoticum is a new record for Mexico. Additionally, one new species, Minibiotus citlalium sp. nov. was discovered; it resembles to Min. constellatus, Min. sidereus and Min. pentannulatus by the presence of a similar distribution pattern of star-shaped pores in the dorsal cuticle arranged in 11 transverse rows, which become double in the segments of the legs I–III, and by a very large star-shaped pore (5–6 tips) on each leg of the fourth pair. Minibiotus citlalium sp. nov. differs from other Minibiotus species mainly by macroplacoid length sequence, presence of both small and large star-shaped pores on the external surface on all legs, and by egg processes with inconspicuous ornamentation.

Beschreibung: A porous titanium structure was suggested to improve implant stability in the early healing period or in poor bone quality. This study investigated the effect of a porous structure on the osseointegration of dental implants. A total of 28 implants (14 implants in each group) were placed in the posterior mandibles of four beagle dogs at 3 months after extraction. The control group included machined surface implants with an external implant–abutment connection, whereas test group implants had a porous titanium structure added to the apical portion. Resonance frequency analysis (RFA); removal torque values (RTV); and surface topographic and histometric parameters including bone-to-implant contact length and ratio, inter-thread bone area and ratio in total, and the coronal and apical parts of the implants were measured after 4 weeks of healing. RTV showed a significant difference between the groups after 4 weeks of healing (p = 0.032), whereas no difference was observed in RFA. In the test group, surface topography showed bone tissue integrated into the porous structures. In the apical part of the test group, all the histometric parameters exhibited significant increases compared to the control group. Within the limitations of this study, enhanced bone growth into the porous structure was achieved, which consequently improved osseointegration of the implant.

Beschreibung: Deep learning models have been applied for varied electrical applications in smart grids with a high degree of reliability and accuracy. The development of deep learning models requires the historical data collected from several electric utilities during the training of the models. The lack of historical data for training and testing of developed models, considering security and privacy policy restrictions, is considered one of the greatest challenges to machine learning-based techniques. The paper proposes the use of homomorphic encryption, which enables the possibility of training the deep learning and classical machine learning models whilst preserving the privacy and security of the data. The proposed methodology is tested for applications of fault identification and localization, and load forecasting in smart grids. The results for fault localization show that the classification accuracy of the proposed privacy-preserving deep learning model while using homomorphic encryption is 97–98%, which is close to 98–99% classification accuracy of the model on plain data. Additionally, for load forecasting application, the results show that RMSE using the homomorphic encryption model is 0.0352 MWh while RMSE without application of encryption in modeling is around 0.0248 MWh.

Beschreibung: The tailings that remain after the collection and screening of Mn nodules are directly discharged into the ocean and are anticipated to influence the ocean environment and marine organisms. The primary factors determining the influence (diffusion) range are the ocean currents and the settling velocity of the tailings; the latter is directly correlated with the time that the tailings remain in the water column. Flocculation is affected by the actual tailing discharge conditions. The settling velocity of the tailings is expected to increase as a result of flocculation; therefore, data on the size distribution of flocs are needed to compute the settling velocity of the tailings. In this study, a method for estimating the floc size distribution of the tailings is proposed, and the general flocculation process is analyzed using the apparent settling velocity, which is readily estimated by simple settling experiments conducted with standard tailings at different concentrations. The apparent falling time-curve followed a power function, and the flocculated grain size was 3–4 times larger than that before flocculation. In addition, flocculation and falling were significantly inhibited by the time required for flocculation. The method suggested in this study was validated by using a numerical particle-tracking model based on the autoencoder concept, which estimates the apparent settling velocity using the flocculated grain size distribution. The computed time-velocity curve agreed well with the apparent time curve obtained in the experiment, with an error of approximately 5–10% except in the initial time range (0–30 s), despite the qualitative nature of the assumptions.

Beschreibung: Pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) has drawn attention as a potential tool to improve the ability of bone biomaterials to integrate into the surrounding tissue. We investigated the effects of PEMF (frequency, 75 Hz; magnetic induction amplitude, 2 mT; pulse duration, 1.3 ms) on human osteoblast-like cells (SAOS-2) seeded onto wool keratin scaffolds in terms of proliferation, differentiation, and production of the calcified bone extracellular matrix. The wool keratin scaffold offered a 3D porous architecture for cell guesting and nutrient diffusion, suggesting its possible use as a filler to repair bone defects. Here, the combined approach of applying a daily PEMF exposure with additional osteogenic factors stimulated the cells to increase both the deposition of bone-related proteins and calcified matrix onto the wool keratin scaffolds. Also, the presence of SAOS-2 cells, or PEMF, or osteogenic factors did not influence the compression behavior or the resilience of keratin scaffolds in wet conditions. Besides, ageing tests revealed that wool keratin scaffolds were very stable and showed a lower degradation rate compared to commercial collagen sponges. It is for these reasons that this tissue engineering strategy, which improves the osteointegration properties of the wool keratin scaffold, may have a promising application for long term support of bone formation in vivo.

Beschreibung: The cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) method is currently the most frequently used approach for the renovation of piping without digging; this technology is suitable for pipes made from all types of material. The authors of this paper examined how chemical substances and increased temperature change samples of CIPP with vinyl-ester resin taken from a simulated installation. Changes were observed at several levels: visually via a digital optical microscope, through changes of short-term bending properties and by observation of the activity of the sample structure by means of acoustic emission (AE). Interdependencies among the observed parameters were examined, specifically, the cumulative number of hits (cnt)/deflection and flexural properties/mechanic wave velocity. The test results prove that after three weeks of immersion in a simulated aggressive environment that mirrors what may happen to CIPP in real conditions, short-term mechanical properties change. This is also proven by the results of the AE measurements. For clarity, the results include images from a digital optical microscope. In addition, this paper proves that CIPP samples have good resistance to the action of organic and inorganic acids and to increased temperatures. After three weeks of exposure to a temperature of 100 °C the CIPP flexural properties of the samples had even improved.

Beschreibung: Surgery is performed to treat various diseases. During the process, the surgical site is healed through self-healing after surgery. Post-operative or tissue adhesion caused by unnecessary contact with the surgical site occurs during the normal healing process. In addition, it has been frequently found in patients who have undergone surgery, and severe adhesion can cause chronic pain and various complications. Therefore, anti-adhesion barriers have been developed using multiple biomaterials to prevent post-operative adhesion. Typically, anti-adhesion barriers are manufactured and sold in numerous forms, such as gels, solutions, and films, but there are no products that can completely prevent post-operative adhesion. These products are generally applied over the surgical site to physically block adhesion to other sites (organs). Many studies have recently been conducted to increase the anti-adhesion effects through various strategies. This article reviews recent research trends in anti-adhesion barriers.

Beschreibung: Satellite data products and high-resolution in situ observations were combined to investigate the evolution and structure of the Kuroshio Extension Front in Spring 2019. The former reveals the variation of the front is influenced by the northward movement of the Kuroshio Extension through transporting warm and saline water to a cold and brackish water region. The latter indicates steep upward slopes of the isopycnals, tilting northward in the frontal zone, as well as several ~300 m thick blobs of North Pacific Intermediate Water between 26.25 and 26.75 kg/m3, where conspicuous thermohaline intrusions occur. Further analysis indicates these thermohaline intrusions prefer to alternate salt fingering and diffusive convection interfaces, and are affected by strong shears.

Beschreibung: Soil microbes are key to nutrient cycling and soil formation, yet the impact of soil properties on microbe biomass remains unclear. Using 240 soil cores of 0–15 cm depth, taken at random points across six cattle-grazed pastures on an undulating landscape, we evaluated the biomass of microbes in soil as affected by naturally occurring variation in soil organic carbon (SOC), clay content, and local topography. The study pastures varied in historic land-use for crops or forage seeding. SOC was found to be greater in topographically low areas. In contrast, clay content was not related to topography, and clay deposition possibly varies with glaciation legacy. Microbial biomass carbon (MBC) was correlated positively with SOC, increasing from 700 mg kg−1 MBC at 25 g kg−1 SOC to 2240 mg kg−1 MBC at 90 g kg−1 SOC. Most likely, SOC promotes MBC through the release of water-soluble organic carbon. However, the response of MBC to clay content was negative, decreasing from 1340 mg kg−1 MBC at 5% clay to 880 mg kg−1 MBC at 30% clay. Small voids in association with clay particles likely restrict the access of microbes to SOC. The relationship between SOC and MBC illustrates the important role of SOC for soil function, in terms of nutrient availability and development of soil structure via the contribution of microbes. Lastly, there was considerable spatial variability in MBC across the 65 ha site, highlighting the importance of land-use histories and gradients in environmental variables, to determine the biomass of microbes in soil.

Beschreibung: Our aim was to study the relationship between the sex-determining genes, sox9a and cyp19a, and water temperature in Gadus chalcogrammus. We assessed the sex ratio based on the expression levels of sox9a and cyp19a at different water temperatures (5, 8, 11, and 14 °C) and at different stages of walleye pollock development (embryos, larvae, and juveniles). Next, we used immature walleye pollock to assess sox9a expression in males and cyp19a and vitellogenin (VTG) expression in females at different water temperatures. Males expressed sox9a in the gonadal tissues, while females expressed cyp19a in the gonadal tissues and VTG in the blood plasma. In the first experiment, cyp19a expression was higher at 5 °C and 8 °C, and sox9a expression was higher at 11 and 14 °C. In the second experiment, sox9a expression remained relatively stable, but cyp19a expression decreased with increasing temperature, decreasing significantly after 14 °C. Similar patterns were also observed for VTG expression. These results indicate that lower water temperatures increase cyp19a expression, which increases the female ratio. Higher water temperatures increase sox9a expression, which increases the male ratio. Therefore, this study highlights the potential of the sex-determining genes and the influence of water temperature.

Beschreibung: The wide application of Nd-Fe-B permanent magnets, in addition to rare-earth metal resource constraints, creates the necessity of the development of efficient technologies for recycling sintered Nd-Fe-B permanent magnets. In the present study, a magnet-to-magnet recycling process is considered. As starting materials, magnets of different grades were used, which were processed by hydrogen decrepitation and blending the powder with NdHx. Composition inhomogeneity in the Nd2Fe14B-based magnetic phase grains in the recycled magnets and the existence of a core-shell structure consisting of a Nd-rich (Dy-depleted) core and Nd-depleted (Dy-enriched) shell are demonstrated. The formation of this structure results from the grain boundary diffusion process of Dy that occurs during the sintering of magnets prepared from a mixture of Dy-free (N42) and Dy-containing magnets. The increase in the coercive force of the N42 magnet was shown to be 52%. The simultaneous retention of the remanence, and even its increase, were observed and explained by the improved isolation of the main magnetic phase grains as well as their alignment.

Beschreibung: This research was devoted to studying the influence of the taper angle on the micro-compression of micro-pillars fabricated from near-amorphous and nanocrystalline Mo-B-C coatings. A series of micro-pillars with a taper angle between 4–14° was fabricated by focused ion beam technique. The deformation mechanism was found to be dependent on the taper and, also, on the crystallinity of the coating. In order to obtain correct values of yield strength and Young’s modulus, three empirical models of stress correction were experimentally tested, and the results were compared with nanoindentation measurements. It was shown that the average stress correction model provided comparable results with nanoindentation for the yield strength for taper angles up to ~10°. On the other hand, the average radius or area model gave the most precise results for Young’s modulus if the taper angle was

Beschreibung: The mechanical characterization of plain foamed concrete (PFC) and fiber-reinforced foamed concrete (FRFC) with a density of 700 kg/m3 was performed with compression and tension tests. FRFC was reinforced with the natural fiber henequen (untreated or alkaline-treated) at volume fractions of 0.5%, 1% and 1.5%. Polypropylene fiber reinforcement was also used as a reference. For all FRFCs, the inclusion of the fibers enhanced the compressive and tensile strengths and plastic behavior, which was attributed to the increase of specimen integrity. Under compressive loading, after the peak strength, there was no considerable loss in strength and a plateau-like regime was observed. Under tensile loading, the fibers significantly increased the tensile strength of the FRFCs and prevented a sudden failure of the specimens, which was in contrast to the brittle behavior of the PFC. The tensile behavior enhancement was higher when treated henequen fibers were used, which was attributed to the increase in the fiber–matrix bond produced by the alkaline treatment. The microscopic characterization showed that the inclusion of fibers did not modify the air-void size and its distribution. Higher energy absorption was observed for FRFCs when compared to the PFC, which was attributed to the enhanced toughness and ductility by the fibers. The results presented herein warrant further research of FRFC with natural henequen fibers for engineering applications.

Beschreibung: We utilized Ni as a floating capping layer in p-channel SnO thin-film transistors (TFTs) to improve their electrical performances. By utilizing the Ni as a floating capping layer, the p-channel SnO TFT showed enhanced mobility as high as 10.5 cm2·V−1·s−1. The increase in mobility was more significant as the length of Ni capping layer increased and the thickness of SnO active layer decreased. The observed phenomenon was possibly attributed to the changed vertical electric field distribution and increased hole concentration in the SnO channel by the floating Ni capping layer. Our experimental results demonstrate that incorporating the floating Ni capping layer on the channel layer is an effective method for increasing the field-effect mobility in p-channel SnO TFTs.

Beschreibung: Continuous fiber-reinforced manufacturing has many advantages, but the fabrication cost is high and its process is difficult to control. This paper presents a method for printing fiber-reinforced composite on the common fused filament fabrication (FFF) platform. Polylactic Acid (PLA) and Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fibers are used as printing materials. A spatial continuous toolpath planning strategy is employed to reduce the workload of post-processing without cutting the fiber. Experimental results show that this process not only enables the printing of models with complex geometric shapes but also supports material recycling and reuse. A material recovery rate of 100% for continuous PET fiber and 83% for PLA were achieved for a better environmental impact. Mechanical tests show that the maximum tensile strength of continuous PET fiber-reinforced thermoplastic composites (PFRTPCs) is increased by 117.8% when compared to polyamide-66 (PA66).

Beschreibung: This paper presents the results of research concerning multilayered epoxy composites reinforced with different materials. The strength of multilayered composites depends, to a large extent, on the reinforcing material. The authors decided to compare the low velocity impact response and perform tensile strength tests on several composites, to ascertain the mechanical properties of the prepared composites. Five different reinforcing materials were provided for the research (two fabrics made from aramid fibers, two fabrics made from carbon fibers and one fabric made from polyethylene fibers). The composites were manufactured by the vacuum supported hand laminating method. The low velocity impact response tests were conducted with the use of a pneumatic launcher. Three strikers with different geometry (conical striker, hemispherical striker and ogival striker) were used. A comparison of the resulting damage to the composites after the impact of the strikers was based on the images obtained using an optical microscope; tensile tests were also performed. The experimental investigation showed significant differences in the mechanical properties of the composites, depending on the applied reinforcing material. It was found that, as a result of the impacts, less damage occurred in the composites which were characterized by a lower Young’s modulus and a higher tensile strength.

Beschreibung: The use of gypsum as an indoor coating material for buildings is very extensive. This means that huge amounts of gypsum waste are generated daily worldwide. Therefore, many researchers in the last years have been working on the generation of new gypsum-related materials and products that incorporate recycled gypsum waste as a replacement for the commercial one. On the other hand, trying to reduce the large amounts of plastic generated globally each year, several studies have used different types of plastic waste as aggregates for the development of new construction and building materials. However, up to now, no previous studies have been found in which any type of plastic waste has been used as an aggregate in a recycled gypsum matrix. This paper presents a study in which two different types of waste were mixed for the development of new gypsum plasters: unheated gypsum waste from industrial plasterboard production (GPW) and polycarbonate (PC) waste from rejected compact discs (CDs) and digital versatile discs (DVDs). In this sense, the mechanical and thermal performance of plasters was evaluated. Finally, in order to evaluate the changes in the microstructure of the composites, a scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis was conducted. The results showed a good performance of the new composites when both types of waste were combined in the mixes. New lightweight eco-efficient plasters, completely recycled, with enhanced flexural strength (by 14.8%), compressive strength (by 26.8%), and thermal conductivity (42.8% less), compared to the reference material, were achieved.

Beschreibung: Fifth generation (5G) is a new generation mobile communication system developed for the growing demand for mobile communication. Channel coding is an indispensable part of most modern digital communication systems, for it can improve the transmission reliability and anti-interference. In order to meet the requirements of 5G communication, a dual threshold self-corrected minimum sum (DT-SCMS) algorithm for low-density parity-check (LDPC) decoders is proposed in this paper. Besides, an architecture of LDPC decoders is designed. By setting thresholds to judge the reliability of messages, the DT-SCMS algorithm erases unreliable messages, improving the decoding performance and efficiency. Simulation results show that the performance of DT-SCMS is better than that of SCMS. When the code rate is 1/3, the performance of DT-SCMS has been improved by 0.2 dB at the bit error rate of 10 − 4 compared with SCMS. In terms of the convergence, when the code rate is 2/3, the number of iterations of DT-SCMS can be reduced by up to 20.46% compared with SCMS, and the average proportion of reduction is 18.68%.
