Notizen: Abstract By studying the behavior of various tracer species in the lungs, one can assess many important characteristics which distinguish normal and abnormal function. Quantitative evaluation of function depends on the use of an appropriate model in conjunction with experimental data. A multi-compartment model is derived from mass balances to describe dynamic as well as (breath-averaged) steady-state transport processes between the environment and pulmonary capillary blood. The breathing cycle is divided into three time periods (inspiration, expiration, and pause) so that the model equations are discrete in time. No other model of tracer species transport in the lungs deals simultaneously with species dynamics, variable breathing pattern, distribution inhomogeneities, and non-equilibrium between alveolar gas and capillary blood. Models currently in the literature are shown to be special cases of the model presented here.

Notizen: Abstract Local stability seems to imply global stability for population models. To investigate this claim, we formally define apopulation model. This definition seems to include the one-dimensional discrete models now in use. We derive a necessary and sufficient condition for the global stability of our defined class of models. We derive an easily testable sufficient condition for local stability to imply global stability. We also show that if a discrete model is majorized by one of these stable population models, then the discrete model is globally stable. We demonstrate the utility of these theorems by using them to prove that the regions of local and global stability coincide for six models from the literature. We close by arguing that these theorems give a method for demonstrating global stability that is simpler and easier to apply than the usual method of Liapunov functions.

Notizen: Abstract The asymptotic behaviour of a logistic equation with diffusion on a bounded region and a diffusionally coupled delay is investigated. An equivelent parabolic system is derived for certain types of delays. Using a Layapunov functional, sufficient conditions for the global asymptotic stability of the constant steady state are obtained. When the global stability is lost, using Hopf's bifurcation theory, existence of travelling waves is shown for ring-like and periodic one dimensional habitats.

Notizen: Abstract It was hypothesized in an earlier work that sensory perception can occur only when the perceiving system is uncertain about the nature of the event being perceived. In the absence of any uncertainty, perception will not take place. The response of the sensory afferent neuron (impulse transmission rate) was calculated using Shannon's measure of uncertainty or entropy. It will now be shown that when the event being perceived is the position and momentum of a particle, Shannon's measure of uncertainty leads to the Heisenberg Uncertainty relationship.

Notizen: Abstract The dependence of the spatial concentration profiles of morphogens on a characteristic dimension is obtained by continuation techniques for Gierer and Meinhardt's activator-inhibitor model of morphogenesis. The study of the behaviour of the system during growth, where the linear and exponential increase of the characteristic dimension is considered, revealed that more complex patterns of morphogen spatial concentrations appear regularly in a reproducible way.

Notizen: Abstract Computer models have been used by various authors to simulate both the growth of normal cellular tissue and the development of cancerous cells within normal tissue. As these models were the result of considerable idealization, the purpose of the present paper is to propose a model in which the degree of simplification is relaxed: the features of simultaneous growth, and cell growth whose rate depends on the free absorbing periphery of the cell are introduced. Simulation experiments have been conducted using the model, and the results are presented.

Notizen: Abstract A model for the nerve impulse due to Zeeman (1972) and based on catastrophe theory is compared with alternative models and criticisms of Zeeman's model by Sussmann and Zahler (1977, 1978) are assessed. The criticisms of Zeeman's motivation for his model are found to carry some weight. Sussmann and Zahler (1977, 1978) list numerous features of Zeeman's model which, they state, are not in agreement with experiment. These statements as they stand are largely erroneous, and the model still remains to be tested by a critical series of experiments. However, a detailed analysis reveals defects in Zeeman's model, not among those claimed by Sussmann and Zahler, showing that the explicit equations of the model cannot be correct. The possibility of a modified approach along similar lines and its ultimate adoption remains open.

Notizen: Abstract A possible mechanism for effects of microwave radiation on the auditory system is the generation of field-induced forces at interfaces that divide materials of dissimilar electrical properties. A general expression for these “Maxwell stresses” is derived and then used to calculate the approximate magnitude of field-induced force within the organ of Corti during microwave exposure. Comparison of the results with data on the force needed to excite cochlear hair cells indicates auditory responses could be evoked by this mechanism at power densities near the threshold of rf hearing sensations.

Notizen: Abstract In the framework of the neural network theory effects similar to hypnotic displays are constructed. They are based on the associative paradigm involving non-linear interaction of excitatory and inhibitory channels with synaptic memory. The non-linearity of long-term memorizing processes may cause effects exhibited by blind spots, which are interpreted as the first stage of hypnosis. More complicated phenomena are discussed in terms of a two-layer network.

Notizen: Abstract Mutation is introduced into autocatalytic reaction networks. The differential equations obtained are neither of repliator-type nor can they be transformed straightway into a linear equation. Examples of low dimensional dynamical systems —n=2, 3 and 4 — are discussed and complete qualitative analysis is presented. Error thresholds known from simple replication-mutation kinetics with frequency independent replication rates occur here as well. Instead of cooperative transitions or higher order phase transitions the thresholds appear here as supercritical or subcritical bifurcations being analogous to first-order phase transitions.

Notizen: Abstract The non-linear behavior of a differential equations-based predator-prey model, incorporating a spatial refuge protecting a consant proportion of prey and with temperature-dependent parameters chosen appropriately for a mite interaction on fruit trees, is examined using the numerical bifurcation code AUTO 86. The most significant result of this analysis is the existence of a temperature interval in which increasing the amount of refuge dynamically destabilizes the system; and on part of this interval the interaction is less likely to persist in that predator and prey minimum population densities are lower than when no refuge is available. It is also shown that increasing the amount of refuge can lead to population outbreaks due to the presence of multiple stable states. The ecological implications of a refuge are discussed with respect to the biological control of mite pests.

Notizen: Abstract In many applications of control theory on plant growth models biomass maximization is postulated to avoid analytically unsolvable problems while fruit maximization is commonly considered to be a more realistic criterion. In a special case, we are able to compare these criteria. Iwasa and Roughgarden (1984,Theor. Pop. Biol. 25, 78–105) have investigated a certain class of plant growth models using a fruit maximization criterion. They proved that, in the vegetative growth period, the organs follow a certain path of balanced growth. We show that this path remains optimal when biomass maximization is postulated. This underlines the importance of the balanced growth path found by Iwasa and Roughgarden. Furthermore, our result suggests that in the vegetative growth period the biomass maximization criterion is a good approximation of fruit maximization. In another theoretical control investigation, Schultzeet al. (1983,Oecologia 58, 169–177) derived a different type of balanced growth path. We apply the theory of Iwasa and Roughgarden to an improved version of the model of Schulzeet al. This leads to a new description of balanced growth between root and shoot that reflects non-linearities in the water uptake process and constitutes an interesting hypothesis for further experimental testing.

Notizen: Abstract In this paper the effects of changing the ion concentration in and around a sample of soft tissue are investigated. The triphasic theory developed by Laiet al. (1990,Biomechanics of Diarthrodial Joints, Vol. 1, Berlin, Springer-Verlag) is reduced to two coupled partial differential equations involving fluid ion concentration and tissue solid deformation. These equations are given in general form for Cartesian, cylindrical and spherical geometries. After solving the two equations quantities such as fluid velocity, fluid pressure, chemical potentials and chemical expansion stress may be easily calculated. In the Cartesian geometry comparison is made with the experimental and theoretical work of Myerset al. (1984,ASME J. biomech. Engng,106, 151–158). This dealt with changing the ion concentration of a salt shower on a strip of bovine articular cartilage. Results were obtained in both free swelling and isometric tension states, using an empirical formula to acount for ion induced deformation. The present theory predicts lower ion concentrations inside the tissue than this earlier work. A spherical sample of tissue subjected to a change in salt bath ion concentration is also considered. Numerical results are obtained for both hypertonic and hypotonic bathing solutions. Of particular interest is the finding that tissue may contract internally before reaching a final swollen equilibrium state or swell internally before finally contracting. By considering the relative magnitude, and also variation throughout the time course of terms in the governing equations, an even simpler system is deduced. As well as being linear the concentration equation in the new system is uncoupled. Results obtained from the linear system compare well with those from the spherical section. Thus, biological swelling situations may be modelled by a simple system of equations with the possibility, of approximate analytic solutions in certain cases.

Notizen: Abstract Many models of immune networks have been proposed since the original work of Jerne [1974,Ann. Immun. (Inst. Pasteur) 125C, 373–389]. Recently, a limited class of models (Weisbuchet al., 1990,J. theor. Biol. 146, 483–499) have been shown to maintain immunological memory by idiotypic network interactions. We examine generalizations of these models when the networks are both large and highly connected to study their memory capacity, i.e. their ability to account for immunization to a large number of random antigens. Our calculations show that in these minimal models, random connectivities with continuously distributed affinities reduce the memory capacity to essentially nil.

Notizen: Abstract A kinetic model is proposed to delineate the factors that determine the coronary reactive hyperemic response (RHR) to transient ischemia. The model comprises of myocardial-interstitial (M) and vascular (V) compartments. Vasodilator metabolites (VM) are produced in the M compartment during the interval of coronary occlusion. The rate of VM production is dependent on the flow rate during the ischemic period, the ratio of excess flow above the control level (R) to the loss of flow during occlusion period (D), the amount of oxygen stored and the degree of vasodilation in the V compartment prior to occlusion. Following a complete release of occlusion, VM are transported from the M to V compartment and are washed out or degraded with time. The time course of RHR is determined by the coronary patency which is proportional to VM concentration in the V compartment. Based on a set of numerical constants, the model is tested by simulating RHR to the various occlusion manoeuvres: a pair of 10 sec occlusions separated by brief release, a 15 sec release followed by a second brief occlusion, a brief release of an occlusion followed by restriced inflow and a period of restricted inflow after occlusion. The simulated results fit the experimental R/D and RH durations data of canine hearts. Factors that determine the impairment of RH capacity in coronary stenosis are suggested in terms of the model scheme.

Notizen: Abstract In the present paper a kinetic study is made of the behaviour of a Michaelis-Menten enzyme-catalysed reaction in the presence of irreversible inhibitors rendered unstable in the medium by their reaction with the product of enzymatic catalysis. A general mechanism involving competitive, non-competitive, uncompetitive and mixed irreversible inhibition with one or two steps has been analysed. The differential equation that describes the kinetics of the reaction is non-linear and computer simulations of its dynamic behaviour are presented. The results obtained show that the systems studied here present kinetic co-operativity for a target enzyme that follows the simple Michaelis-Menten mechanism in its action on the substrate, except in the case of an uncompetitive-type inhibitor.

Notizen: Abstract The relative contributions of mitochondrial β-oxidation and peroxisomal β-oxidation and peroxisomal ω-oxidation to the oxidation of a given fatty acidin vivo can be quantitated by an isotopic method. The approach requires infusion of a fatty acid labelled on two specific carbon atoms (e.g. [1-14C] and [11-14C] palmitate) to an isotopic steady state, with subsequent isolation and degradation of an acetylated conjugate as a product of the liver cytosolic acetyl CoA pool and of ketone bodies as a product of the liver mitochondrial acetyl CoA pool.

Notizen: Abstract Pancreatic β-cells in intact islets of Langerhans perfused with various glucose concentrations exhibit periodic bursting electrical activity (BEA) consisting of active and silent phases. The fraction of the time spent in the active phase is called the plateau fraction and appears to be strongly correlated with the rate of release of insulin from islets as glucose concentration is varied. Here this correlation is quantified and a theoretical development is presented in detail. Experimental rates of insulin release are correlated with “effective” plateau fractions over a range of glucose concentrations. There are a number of different models for BEA in pancreatic β-cells and a method is developed here to quantify the dependence of a glucose dependent parameter on glucose concentration. As an example, the plateau fractions computed from the Sherman-Rinzel-Keizer model are matched with experimental plateau fractions to obtain a relationship between the model's glucose-dependent parameter, β, and glucose concentration. Knowledge of the relationships between β and glucose concentration and between experimental measurements of rates of insulin release and plateau fractions permits the determination of theoretical rates of insulin release from the model.

Notizen: Abstract When a suspension of bacterial cells of the speciesBacillus subtilis is placed in a chamber with its upper surface open to the atmosphere complex bioconvection patterns are observed. These arise because the cells: (1) are denser than water; and (2) usually swim upwards, so that the density of an initially uniform suspension becomes greater at the top than the bottom. When the vertical density gradient becomes large enough, an overturning instability occurs which ultimately evolves into the observed patterns. The reason that the cells swim upwards is that they are aerotactic, i.e. they swim up gradients of oxygen, and they consume oxygen. These properties are incorporated in conservation equations for the cell (N) and oxygen (C) concentrations, and these are solved in the pre-instability phase of development whenN andC depend only on the vertical coordinate and time. Numerical results are obtained for both shallow- and deep-layer chambers, which are intrinsically different and require different mathematical and numerical treatments. It is found that, for both shallow and deep chambers, a thin boundary layer, densely packed with cells, forms near the surface. Beneath this layer the suspension becomes severely depleted of cells. Furthermore, in the deep chamber cases, a discontinuity in the cell concentration arises between this cell-depleted region and a cell-rich region further below, where no significant oxygen concentration gradients develop before the oxygen is fully consumed. The results obtained from the model are in good qualitative agreement with the experimental observations.

Notizen: Abstract We describe a classification scheme for bursting oscillations which encompasses many of those found in the literature on bursting in excitable media. This is an extension of the scheme of Rinzel (inMathematical Topics in Population Biology, Springer, Berlin, 1987), put in the context of a sequence of horizontal cuts through a two-parameter bifurcation diagram. We use this to describe the phenomenological character of different types of bursting, addressing the issue of how well the bursting can be characterized given the limited amount of information often available in experimental settings.

Notizen: Abstract To ensure its sustained growth, a tumour may secrete chemical compounds which cause neighbouring capillaries to form sprouts which then migrate towards it, furnishing the tumour with an increased supply of nutrients. In this paper a mathematical model is presented which describes the migration of capillary sprouts in response to a chemoattractant field set up by a tumour-released angiogenic factor, sometimes termed a tumour angiogenesis factor (TAF). The resulting model admits travelling wave solutions which correspond either to successful neovascularization of the tumour or failure of the tumour to secure a vascular network, and which exhibit many of the characteristic features of angiogenesis. For example, the increasing speed of the vascular front, and the evolution of an increasingly developed vascular network behind the leading capillary tip front (the brush-border effect) are both discernible from the numerical simulations. Through the development and analysis of a simplified caricature model, valuable insight is gained into how the balance between chemotaxis, tip proliferation and tip death affects the tumour's ability to induce a vascular response from neighbouring blood vessels. In particular, it is possible to define the success of angiogenesis in terms of known parameters, thereby providing a potential framework for assessing the viability of tumour neovascularization in terms of measurable quantities.

Notizen: Abstract Due to the increasing importance of the extracellular matrix in many biological problems, in this paper we develop a model for fibroblast and collagen orientation with the ultimate objective of understanding how fibroblasts form and remodel the extracellular matrix, in particular its collagen component. The model uses integrodifferential equations to describe the interaction between the cells and fibers at a point in space with various orientations. The equations are studied both analytically and numerically to discover different types of solutions and their behavior. In particular we examine solutions where all the fibroblasts and collagen have discrete orientations, a localized continuum of orientations and a continuous distribution of orientations with several maxima. The effect of altering the parameters in the system is explored, including the angular diffusion coefficient for the fibroblasts, as well as the strength and range of the interaction between fibroblasts and collagen. We find the initial conditions and the range of influence between the collagen and the fibroblasts are the two factors which determine the behavior of the solutions. The implications of this for wound healing and cancer are discussed including the conclusion that the major factor in determining the degree of scarring is the initial deposition of collagen.

Notizen: Abstract This paper considers the time to extinction for a stochastic epidemic model of SEIR form without replacement of susceptibles. It first shows how previous rigorous results can be heuristically explained in terms of the more transparent dynamics of an approximating deterministic system. The model is then extended to include a host population structured into patches, with weak nearest-neighbour mixing of infection. It is shown, by considering the approximating deterministic system, that the expected time to extinction in a population of n + 1 patches each of size N is of the form a log N + bn, provided that N 〉 N c where N c is a critical patch size below which transits are unlikely to occur. This corresponds to the simple decomposition of the time of an epidemic into the time it takes to spread through one patch plus the time it takes to transit to each of n successive patches. Expressions for this threshold and the coefficients of the time to extinction are given in terms of the transmission parameters of infection and the coupling strength between patches. These expressions are compared with numerical results using parameters relevant to a study of phocine distemper virus in North Sea seals, and the agreement is found to be good for large and small N. In the region when N ≈ N c , where transits may or may not occur, interesting transitional behaviour is seen, leading to a non-monotonicity of the extinction time as a function of N.

Notizen: Abstract When directly transmitted infectious diseases are modeled assuming an everlasting induced immunity (and constant contact rate), there are well-established formulas to deal with, which is not true if we include the loss of induced immunity. In general, the immunity induced by the disease is everlasting. We propose a model considering the loss of immunity and present methods for the estimation of two epidemiological parameters: the force of infection and the basic reproduction ratio. We also analyze the effects of the loss of immunity on these parameters. Based on these results, we conclude that reinfection can play an important role in highly vaccinated populations.

Notizen: Abstract We studied mathematical models for the length distributions of actin filaments under the effects of polymerization/depolymerization, and fragmentation. In this paper, we emphasize the effects of these two processes acting alone. In this case, simple discrete and continuous models can be derived and solved explicitly (in several special cases), making the problem interesting from a modeling and pedagogical point of view. In a companion paper (Ermentrout and Edelstein-Keshet, 1998, Bull. Math. Biol. 60, 477–503) we investigate what happens when the processes act together, with particular attention to fragmentation by gelsolin, and with a greater level of biological detail.

Notizen: Abstract A possible experimental design for combination experiments is to compare the doseresponse curve of a single agent with the corresponding curve of the same agent using either a fixed amount of a second one or a fixed dose ratio. No interaction is then often defined by a parallel shift of these curves. We have performed a systematic study for various types of doseresponse relations both for the dose-additivity (Loewe additivity) and for the independence (Bliss independence) criteria for defining zero interaction. Parallelism between doseresponse curves of a single agent and those of the same agent in the presence of a fixed amount of another one is found for the Loewe-additivity criterion for linear doseresponse relations. For nonlinear relations, one has to differentiate between effect parallelism (parallel shift on the effect scale) and dose parallelism (parallel shift on the dose scale). In the case of Loewe additivity, zero-interaction dose parallelism is found for power, Weibull, median-effect and logistic doseresponse relations, given that special parameter relationships are fulfilled. The mechanistic model of competitive interaction exhibits dose parallelism but not effect parallelism for Loewe additivity. Bliss independence and Loewe additivity lead to identical results for exponential doseresponse curves. This is the only case for which dose parallelism was found for Bliss independence. Parallelism between single-agent doseresponse relations and Loewe additivity mixture relations is found for examples with a fixed doseratio design. However, this is again not a general property of the design adopted but holds only if special conditions are fulfilled. The comparison of combination doseresponse curves with single-agent relations has to be performed taking into account both potency and shape parameters. The results of this analysis lead to the conclusion that parallelism between zero interaction combination and single-agent doseresponse relations is found only for special cases and cannot be used as a general criterion for defining zero-interaction in combined-action assessment even if the correct potency shift is taken into account.

Notizen: Abstract Many models have been proposed for spatial pattern formation in embryology and analyzed for the standard case of zero-flux boundary conditions. However, relatively little attention has been paid to the role of boundary conditions on the form of the final pattern. Here we investigate, numerically, the effect of nonstandard boundary conditions on a model pattern generator, which we choose to be of a cell-chemotactic type. We specifically focus on the role of boundary conditions and the effects of scale and aspect ratio, and study the spatiotemporal dynamics of pattern formation. We illustrate the properties of the model by application to the spatiotemporal sequence of skeletal development.

Notizen: Abstract A model, based on the principles of continuum mechanics, is presented for the analysis of cell-velocity fields within wool follicles. The model requires specification of three follicle characteristics in the form of spatially varying fields: viscosity, cell density and cell production rate. The viscosity is introduced as an attempt to model both complex intercellular interactions and individual cell deformation as the cells move. It is demonstrated that the distribution of cell production is more important than axial variation in viscosity in determining the overall flow pattern.

Notizen: Abstract A microbial trichome extracts nutrients from its immediate surroundings. It may also oxidize electron donors, reduce electron acceptors, and exude the ‘waste’ products of endogenous redox metabolism. Finally, it may effect light harvesting. These exchange fluxes are summed up in a generic model, which covers photoautotrophs as well as chemoheterotrophs. The focus is on endogenous metabolism and the cellular homeostasis of both reducing and phosphorylating equivalents. A novel result is the formulation of four ‘rules’, akin to the Pasteur effect, which govern the compatibility of endogenous metabolism with various assimilatory processes.

We study optimal harvesting for the metapopulation using dynamic programming. Some rules are established as generalizations of rules for a single-species metapopulation harvesting theory. We also establish rules to harvest relatively more (or less) vulnerable prey subpopulations and more (or less) efficient predator subpopulations.

Notizen: Abstract To analyze signals measured from human blood flow in the time-frequency domain, we used the wavelet transform which gives good time resolution for high-frequency components and good frequency resolution for low-frequency components. Five characteristic frequency peaks, corresponding to five almost periodic rhythmic activities, were found on the time scale of minutes. These oscillations were characterized by time and spatial invariant measures. The potential of this approach in studying the blood-flow dynamics was illustrated by revealing differences between the groups of control subjects and athletes.

Notizen: Abstract The interaction of a pair of weakly coupled biological bursters is examined. Bursting refers to oscillations in which an observable slowly alternates between phases of relative quiescence and rapid oscillatory behavior. The motivation for this work is to understand the role of electrical coupling in promoting the synchronization of bursting electrical activity (BEA) observed in the β-cells of the islet of Langerhans, which secrete insulin in response to glucose. By studying the coupled fast subsystem of a model of BEA, we focus on the interaction that occurs during the rapid oscillatory phase. Coupling is weak, diffusive and non-scalar. In addition, non-identical oscillators are permitted. Using perturbation methods with the assumption that the uncoupled oscillators are near a Hopf bifurcation, a reduced system of equations is obtained. A detailed bifurcation study of this reduced system reveals a variety of patterns but suggests that asymmetrically phase-locked solutions are the most typical. Finally, the results are applied to the unreduced full bursting system and used to predict the burst pattern for a pair of cells with a given coupling strength and degree of heterogeneity.

Notizen: Abstract Hemodynamic forces affect endothelial cell morphology and function. In particular, circumferential cyclic stretch of blood vessels, due to pressure changes during the cardiac cycle, is known to affect the endothelial cell shape, mediating the alignment of the cells in the direction perpendicular to stretch. This change in cell shape proceeds a drastic reorganization at the internal level. The cellular scaffolding, mainly composed of actin filaments, reorganize in the direction which later becomes the cell’s long axis. How this external mechanical stimulus is ’sensed’ and transduced into the cell is still unknown. Here, we develop a mathematical model depicting the dynamics of actin filaments, and the influence of the cyclic stretch of the substratum based on the experimental evidence that external stimuli may be transduced inside the cell via transmembrane proteins which are coupled with actin filaments on the cytoplasmic side. Based on this view, we investigate two approaches describing the formulation of the transduction mechanisms involving the coupling between filaments and the membrane proteins. As a result, we find that the mechanical stimulus could cause the experimentally observed reorganization of the entire cytoskeleton simply by altering the dynamics of the filaments connected with the integral membrane proteins, as described in our model. Comparison of our results with previous studies of cytoskeletal dynamics reveals that the cytoskeleton, which, in the absence of the effect of stretch would maintain its isotropic distribution, slowly aligns with the precise direction set by the external stimulus. It is found that even a feeble stimulus, coupled with a strong internal dynamics, is sufficient to align actin filaments perpendicular to the direction of stretch.

Notizen: Abstract We study a general predator—prey system in a spatially heterogeneous environment. The predation process, which occurs on a behavioural time-scale, is much faster than the other processes (reproduction, natural mortality and migrations) occurring on the population dynamics time-scale. We show that, taking account of this difference in time-scales, and assuming that the prey have a refuge, the dynamics of the system on a slow time-scale become donor-controlled. Even though predators may control the prey density locally and on a behavioural fast time-scale, nevertheless, both globally and on a slow time-scale, the prey dynamics are independent of predator density: the presence of predators generates a constant prey mortality. In other words, in heterogeneous environments, the prey population dynamics depend in a switch-like manner on the presence or absence of predators, not on their actual density.

Since the class of proper plants discussed in the paper is more general than the one commonly used, additional properties of solutions are presented. Two numerical examples illustrate the theoretical considerations. The examples have been performed on an IBM PC using the proposed algorithm. This algorithm is a part of a public ASMCS package developed by the author for analysis, synthesis, and simulations of multi-input, multi-output (MIMO) control systems.

Notizen: Abstract We study the behavior of a Hilbert network (i.e., a finite or countably infinite network whose variables are in a Hilbert space and in which the associated total energy is finite) whose elements are affected by perturbations. More specifically, we will give estimates for a change of the current distribution caused by (a) perturbations of the elements of the nominal network when the voltage sources are fixed, and (b) a change of voltage sources in a network whose elements are perturbed. The conditions given in our theorems imply insensitivity and robust stability of the nominal network. The applications of the results are illustrated by an example of an infinite network.

Notizen: Abstract A new lattice filter structure to model two-dimensional (2-D) autoregressive (AR) fields is proposed. The proposed structure utilizes and extracts the information contained in the backward prediction error fields and their delayed versions. The main idea is to use two sets of reflection coefficients corresponding to two quadrant filters and to increase the number of reflection coefficients with the order of the lattice filter. Increasing the number of reflection coefficients at each stage produces a sufficient number of independent parameters to model AR fields up to order three, which is an improvement over the existing 2-D lattice filter structures. The improvement is confirmed by computer simulations. In addition, a relationship between the reflection coefficients and the AR coefficients is derived. It is also shown that the entropy contained in the backward prediction error field vector of the proposed structure is closer to the input entropy when compared to those contained in existing 2-D lattice filters.

Notizen: Abstract This paper addresses the problem of global asymptotic stability in recursive first hyperquadrant causalm-D digital filters. A set of simple-to-check 1-D conditions necessary for stability of them-D system is given. Generalizations tov-dimensional (v〈m) subsystems are also provided. These derived conditions are useful in determining asymptotic convergence ofm-D digital filters implemented in fixed or floating point arithmetic. The set of 1-D conditions can be considered the analogous result to practical bounded input bounded output (BIBO) stability for linearm-D systems.

Notizen: Abstract Let $L[\,\cdot\,]$ be a nondivergent linear second-order uniformly elliptic partial differential operator defined on functions with domain $\Omega.$ Consider the question, "When is a function u a solution of $L[u] = 0$ on $\Omega$ ?" The naive answer, "u is a solution of $L[u] = 0$ on $\Omega$ if $u\in C^2(\Omega)$ and $L[u](x) = 0$ for all $x\in\Omega,$ " is clearly too limited. Indeed, if the coefficients of L are in $W^{1,2}\cap L^{\infty},$ then L can be rewritten in divergence form for which the notion of a "weak" solution can be applied. In this case there could be infinitely many functions that are "weak" but not classical solutions. More importantly, even if the coefficients of L are just bounded and measurable, the recent results of Krylov permit us to construct "solutions" of $L[u] = 0$ on $\Omega,$ and these "solutions" are generally no better than continuous; the "weak" solutions previously mentioned can be obtained by this construction, too. The preceding discussion provides us with an adequate extrinsic definition of solution (i.e., given a function u we either prove that it is or is not the result of such a construction) that has been used by several authors, but one that is not particularly satisfying or illuminating. Our major contribution in this paper is to show the following. I. There is an intrinsic definition of solution that is equivalent to the extrinsic one. II. Furthermore, the intrinsic definition is just the (now) well-known Crandall-Lions viscosity solution, modified in a natural way to accommodate measurable coefficients.

Notizen: Abstract We prove a Tauberian theorem of the form $\phi * g (x)\sim p(x)w(x)$ as $x \to \infty,$ where p(x) is a bounded periodic function and w(x) is a weighted function of power growth. It can be used to study the weighted average of the form $(T^\alpha (\hbox {ln }T)^\beta)^{-1}\int _0^T h(t) \, dt.$

Notizen: Abstract The oscillatory behavior of functions with compactly supported Fourier transform is characterized in a quantified way using various function spaces. In particular, the results in this article show that the oscillations of a function at large scale are comparable to the oscillations of its samples on an appropriate discrete set of points. Several open questions about spaces of sequences are answered and applications in the study of commutator operators on the Paley-Wiener space are shown.

Notizen: Abstract Gibbs' phenomenon occurs for most orthogonal wavelet expansions. It is also shown to occur with many wavelet interpolating series, and a characterization is given. By introducing modifications in such a series, it can be avoided. However, some series that exhibit Gibbs' phenomenon for orthogonal series do not for the associated sampling series.

Notizen: Abstract In this paper, we present a new class of two-dimensional FIR-median hybrid (FMH) filters, which we call separable FMH filters, for image noise smoothing. In a separable FMH filter, a one-dimensional FMH filter is applied to the rows and the columns of an image successively. The deterministic properties of separable and cross window FMH filters are discussed. Under certain assumptions, it is proved that a root of a separable FMH filter is a root of the corresponding cross window FMH filter. The noise attenuating properties of a separable FMH filter are studied and compared with those of the separable median filter, the two-dimensional median filter with a square window, and the cross window FMH filter.

Notizen: Abstract The Chinese remainder theorem is a fundamental technique widely employed in digital signal processing for designing fast algorithms for computing convolutions. Classically, it has two versions. One is over a ring of integers and the second is over a ring of polynomials with coefficients defined over a field. In our previous papers, we developed an extension to this well-known theorem for the case of a ring of polynomials with coefficients defined over a finite ring of integers. The objective was to generalize number-theoretictransforms, which turn out to be a special case of this extension. This paper focuses on the extension of the Chinese remainder theorem for processing complex-valued integer sequences. Once again, the present work generalizes the complex-number-theoretic transforms. The impetus for this work is provided by the occurrence of complex integer sequences in digital signal processing and the desire to process them using exact arithmetic.

Notizen: Abstract A method to improve the stability of the forced response of a recursive digital filter with nonlinearities due to finite wordlength is presented. An analysis of applying a stability criterion on the nonlinear filter is performed by transforming the problem into a mathematical problem of finding a zero set. As a result of the mathematical analysis, one can find a maximal sector size that bounds an equivalent nonlinearity, so that stability is ensured. This sector size is influenced by the choice of the desired nonlinearity characteristic appropriate to the problem, and the amount of the input scaling needed. Another improvement of the filter's stability is obtained by adding a feedback gain, the value of which is determined by using the zero set-finding method. Simulation results showing the improved stability properties of a filter designed by this method are presented.

Notizen: Abstract In this paper a fully systolic, bit level, three-port unconstrained adaptor, which constitutes the main nontrivial building block of ladder wave digital filters, is generated. The one-dimensional binary convolution is used as the underlying algorithm for the implementation of a multiplication. The Isb-first input data organization approach is adopted and thecanonical mapping methodology is used to fully systolize the unconstrained parallel three-port adaptor at the bit level with piplining period a=1. The technique is based on a transformation of the adaptor's signal-flow graph, so that unidirectional data flow takes place. A ring-systolic scheme is proposed for implementing communications among adaptors.

Notizen: Abstract A theoretical framework for the investigation of the qualitative behavior of differential-algebraic equations (DAEs) near an equilibrium point is established. The key notion of our approach is the notion of regularity. A DAE is called regular locally around an equilibrium point if there is a unique vector field such that the solutions of the DAE and the vector field are in one-to-one correspondence in a neighborhood of this equilibrium point. Sufficient conditions for the regularity of an equilibrium point are stated. This in turn allows us to translate several local results, as formulated for vector fields, to DAEs that are regular locally around a given equilibrium point (e.g. Local Stable and Unstable Manifold Theorem, Hopf theorem). It is important that these theorems are stated in terms of the given problem and not in terms of the corresponding vector field.

Notizen: Abstract The classical notion of the λ-generalized nullspace, defined on a matrixA εR n×n,where λ is an eigenvalue, is extended to the case of ordered pairs of matrices(F, G), F, G ε R m×nwhere the associated pencilsF − G is right regular. It is shown that for every α εC ∪ {∞} generalized eigenvalue of (F, G), an ascending nested sequence of spaces {P α i ,i=1, 2,...} and a descending nested sequence of spaces {ie495-02 i=1, 2,...} are defined from the α-Toeplitz matrices of (F, G); the first sequence has a maximal elementM α * , the α-generalized nullspace of (F, G), which is the element of the sequence corresponding to the index τα, the α-index of annihilation of (F, G), whereas the second sequence has the first elementP α * as its maximal element, the α-prime space of (F, G). The geometric properties of the {M α i ,i=1, 2,...,τα and {P α i ,i=1, 2,...sets, as well as their interrelations are investigated and are shown to be intimately related to the existence of nested basis matrices of the nullspaces of the α-Toeplitz matrices of (F, G). These nested basis matrices characterize completely the geometry ofM α * and provide a systematic procedure for the selection of maximal length linearly independent vector chains characterizing theα-Segre characteristic of (F, G).

Notizen: Abstract The robustness problem of stability for large-scale uncertain systems with a class of multiple time delays is addressed in this paper. By applying the complex Lyapunov stability theorem, the matrix measure techniques, and norm inequalities, a new approach for solving a general case of the above problem is proposed. Several robust stability conditions, delay-dependent or delay-independent, are derived to guarantee the asymptotic stability and exponential stability of the uncertain large-scale time-delay systems. Moreover, these obtained results can also be applied to the stabilization design.

Notizen: Abstract Successful speech recognition is highly dependent on appropriate speech segmentation. The poor efficiency of the sequential detection of abrupt changes in the signals with relatively short stationary intervals, as is the case with speech signals, can be improved by the off-line maximum likelihood segmentation algorithm. In this paper the new segmentation algorithm is presented. For the a priori known number of segments, the algorithm determines such signal partitions for which the sum of segment distortion is minimal. The generalized maximum likelihood distortion measure has been introduced, and has proven to be particularly efficient on short signal segments. In the case of an unknown number of segments, its estimate is obtained comparing the reduction of the distortion. The asymptotic properties of the distortion sequence have been analyzed, which led to the definition of the presented segmentation algorithm. The introduced measure can be applied both to the AR and ARMA models. The segmentation algorithm is verified on test signals as well as on the natural speech signal, for which the pitch synchronous framing scheme is applied. The experimental results also include a comparison of the AR and ARMA model-based segmentations. The first results show that ARMA model-based segmentation gives somewhat better results than the AR model algorithm.

Notizen: Abstract This paper describes an implementation of 2-D FIR and IIR linear digital filters via VLSI array processors. The underlying realization structures are based on the matrix decomposition approach. The 2-D concurrent processing is used in order to implement the row and column delays within the cycle time. A high degree of concurrency is achieved by exploiting the pipelining of the array processors with the inherent parallelism of the matrix decomposition structure. The resulting structures are modular, and regular, use only local communication and internal local feedback loops, and achieve high throughput and sampling rates.

Notizen: Abstract This article studies dynamical systems under perturbations. We prove an Equilibrium Equivalence Theorem that guarantees that the dynamics of the system remains unchanged under perturbations with certain fairly general assumptions. We also prove that a power system is robust with respect to parameter changes in generic situations. Concepts of equilibrium equivalence and equilibrium equivalence structural stability are developed and are applied to studies of bifurcations of vector fields on noncompact manifolds. A constructive approach to equilibrium equivalence structural stability verification is emphasized. General results on structural stability of vector fields on differential manifolds are established and important applications of this theory to stability analysis are considered.

Notizen: Abstract The problem of designing a stabilizing compensator for a control system to achieve prescribed initial value constraintsυ (i)(0+)=yi is considered. Indeed, modulo certain technical conditions, such a compensator exists if and only if yi=0;i= 0,1,...,r〈p〉 +r〈t〉 −2; wherer〈p〉 is the relative degree of the plant andr〈t〉 is the relative degree of the system input. This theorem is derived and a complete parameterization of the set of compensators that achieve the prescribed design constraints is formulated.

Notizen: Abstract Wideband source location in array signal processing has received much attention in the literature lately. Methods such as the Coherent Signal Subspace (CSS) method proposed by Wang and Kaveh [12], and the signal subspace method used by Cadzow [3], are typical of the approaches used to tackle the multiple wideband source location problem. Most of these methods are variations of the narrowband high-resolution methods. Grenier [5], on the other hand, has applied the idea of time-dependent Auto-Regressive (AR) modeling [7] for a nonstationary process to the frequency domain AR modeling of the sensor outputs in a linear array and has been able to produce good results for a wideband signal. The AR coefficients in the model are expanded in a set of frequency-dependent basis functions. The choice of the basis functions was deemed immaterial and the method works even when only one snapshot of the array output is available. In this paper, we re-examine this method and present an extension of the frequency-dependent AR modeling approach to a planar array. It is shown that the use of a set of sinc functions for representing the frequency-dependent AR coefficients accurately tracks their evolution in the frequency domain, and gives superior performance compared to that when power or Legendre functions are used. We also propose two methods for smoothing the spatial spectra, from which the source locations are determined. Comparison with the CSS method are also presented.

Notizen: Abstract Centralized methods for source location using sensor arrays have computational and communication burdens that increase significantly with the number of sensors in the array. Therefore, these methods may not be usable in the applications involving very large arrays. In such applications, the data processing may need to be decentralized. This paper introduces two methods for decentralized array processing, based on the recently proposed MODE algorithm. For prescribed nonoverlapping subarrays, both methods are shown to be statistically optimal in the sense that asymptotically they provide the most accurate decentralized estimates of source location parameters. The problem of subarray selection to further optimize the estimation accuracy is only briefly addressed. The two methods are intended for different types of applications: the first should be preferred when there exist significant possibilities for local processing or for parallel computation in the central processor; otherwise the second method should be preferred. The accuracy of the two decentralized methods is compared to the centralized Cramér-Rao bound, both analytically and numerically, in order to provide indications about the loss of accuracy associated with decentralized processing.

Notizen: Abstract We present in this paper a recursive-in-order least-squares (LS) algorithm to compute efficiently the parameters of a 2-D Gaussian Markov random field (GMRF) model. The algorithm is based on the fact that the least-squares estimation of the parameters of a 2-D noncausal GMRF model is consistent and the coefficient matrix in the normal equation has near-to-block-Toeplitz structure. Hence, it has a Levinson-like form for the updating of model parameters by introducing auxiliary variables. Moreover, this paper proposes the concept ofrecursive path for 2-D recursive-in-order algorithms, and points out that there exists a tradeoff between fast computation of the parameters and accurate choice of model support; a compromise recursive path is then suggested where the orders change alternately in two directions. The computational complexity of the developed algorithm is analyzed, and the results show that the algorithm is more efficient when either the image size or the model support is larger. It is found that the total number of multiplications (mps) involved in the new algorithm is only about 14% of that in the conventional LS method when the image size is 512 × 512 and the neighbor set of the model is a 17 × 17 window. Computer simulation results using the recursive-in-order algorithm developed in this paper and the conventional LS method are given to verify the correctness of the new algorithm.

Notizen: Abstract In this paper, we present a hybrid space-time-filtered Viterbi receiver using multiple antennas for co-channel interference (CCI) reduction and intersymbol interference (ISI) equalization in a slow Rayleigh fading channel. In this approach, a space-time filter is first applied at the antenna outputs to maximize the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR), and the scalar output is then sent to a Viterbi equalizer. We propose a closed-form solution to jointly determine the weight vector for the space-time filter and the channel vector for the Viterbi equalizer. We also examine the need for a whitening filter prior to the Viterbi equalizer and show that it only marginally improves the performance. Simulation results are provided to validate our approach and to compare the performance of our receiver with that of different existing receivers.

Notizen: Abstract Prosthetic heart valves have been responsible for extending the life spans and improving the quality of life of many people with serious heart conditions. Even though the heart valves are extremely reliable, eventually they are susceptible to the long-term fatigue and structural failure effects expected for mechanical devices operating over long periods of time. In [2] a classification procedure was developed using spectral features obtained from acoustic signals to determine the condition of the prosthetic heart valve. Although this classification procedure has produced very encouraging results, this method still lacks a fundamental physical description of the sounds produced by the valve during normal operation. In order to obtain a better understanding of the valve acoustic response, we have performed a set of anechoic tests. In this paper, we describe the anechoic experiment and also present limited transient response results. This transient information will eventually be used to identify and improve the features used to classify the valve condition.

Notizen: Abstract In this two-part study we present a new design methodology for neural classifiers. The design procedure utilizes a multiclass vector quantization (MVQ) algorithm for information extraction from the training set. The extracted information suffices to specify the hidden layer in a canonical neural network architecture. The extracted information also leads to the specification of neuron inhibition rules and subsequently the design of the hidden layer-to-output map. In Part I of the study we focus attention on the MVQ algorithm and how it is used to extract information from a training set. The extracted information is referred to as thecodebook. The codebook is used to directly specify the hidden layer. This specification can take the form of a perceptron layer, a radial basis layer, or a heterogeneous layer involving a mixture of neuron types. These and otherh-layer specifications are determined directly from the same extracted information. The MVQ codebook also suffices to scale the activation function of each neuron. In Part II we consider the nonsimplistic hidden layer-to-output map design. We note that the MVQ algorithm, as it extracts information, decomposes the design set into disjoint neighborhoods. For each neighborhood we identify subsets of the hidden layer neurons, which are significant sensors for the neighborhood. For each such subset we construct an output map. Inhibition rules are established to ensure that the proper output map is activated. In benchmark simulations the overall design exhibits excellent performance, to the extent that we are hard pressed to identify bounds on performance, if any.

Notizen: Abstract Cross terms are an inherent consequence of the second order nature of Cohen's class TFDs (Time-Frequency Distributions) [5], [6]. They are manifest in a TFD of multicomponent signals as spurious artifacts arising from interactions between the various signal components, and they can often appear at times and/or frequencies inconsistent with the underlying physical nature of the signal, causing misinterpretation [2], [3], [4]. There are many time frequency distributions that avoid the cross term effect; the best are the Choi-Williams ED (Exponential Distribution) [1] and Levin's IPS (Instantaneous Power Spectrum) [9]. In this paper we combine the cross term reducing philosophy of the ED and IPS to obtain a new TFD that most effectively reduces the cross term effect. Surprisingly, the new TFD also satisfies most desired TFD properties.

Notizen: Abstract An algorithm for the exact computation of the frequency responses of linear interval systems is obtained. For the computation a sectoring stage is added to an elimination algorithm to eliminate interior curves. It is shown that the intersection of a ray and the frequency response set is an empty set or a line segment whose endpoints are extrema of the functions defined. Required mathematical analysis tools for the development of the sectoring algorithm and an illustrative example are provided.

Notizen: Abstract The geometric theory of the domain of an ordered pair (F, G) of matrices or the geometry associated with matrix pencils provides a unifying framework for the study of algebraic, dynamic and feedback properties of linear singular systems. The key concepts and tools of the geometry are the notions of the (F, G)-, (G, F)-invariance and a set of subspace sequences. In this paper, an alternative characterization of these sequences is given based on the properties of the partitioned null spaces of appropriate sequences of Toeplitz matrices defined by the (F, G) pair. The results provide a simple procedure for the computation of the limit spaces of these sequences and clearly cover corresponding problems of the singular, implicit systems theory.

Notizen: Abstract This paper presents a new concept of narrowband and broadband active noise compression (ANCom) systems which improves the conventional active noise equalization (ANE) technique to meet some practical requirements. By using a variable equalization coefficient, the narrowband ANCom system can automatically switch among the four different operating modes of narrowband ANE, according to the primary noise power. As a result, it can “compress” the narrowband noise into a desired power range when the primary noise power varies drastically. Compared to a conventional broadband ANE system, the novel broadband ANCom system not only has the ability to shape the residual noise power spectrum, but can also compress the residual noise power into a predetermined dynamic range as the narrowband AN-Com does. Theoretical analyses are conducted for both the narrowband ANCom and broadband ANCom systems. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithms work well in both static and dynamic situations.

Notizen: Abstract The cornerstone of the theory of discrete-space single-input single-output linear systems is the idea that every such system has an input-output mapH that can be represented by a convolution or the familiar generalization of a convolution. This thinking involves an oversight, which, for the case of bounded inputs mapped continuously into bounded outputs, was recently corrected by adding an additional term to the representation. Here we give a more general result that addresses an important larger family of inputs.

Notizen: Abstract In this paper the problem of robust stabilizing a linear, time-invariant singular system is studied. The characterization is given in terms ofH ∞-bounded perturbations to the numerator and denominator factors of its normalized left coprime factorization. An optimal stability margin is provided in terms of the definition of the Hankel norm of a singular system. The Hankel norm is computed using two generalized Lyapunov equations.

Notizen: Abstract A novel computationally efficient realization of sharp linear-phase finite impulse response (FIR) bandstop filters is proposed. The synthesis scheme for the bandstop filters is derived from variations of the frequency-response-masking technique. Five realization structures are presented in this paper for the synthesis of five different classes of bandstop filters. Approximate expressions for the optimal value of the impulse response up-sampling ratio (M) and the corresponding number of multipliers are derived.

Notizen: Abstract Estimating the covariance sequence of a wide-sense stationary process is of fundamental importance in digital signal processing (DSP). A new method, which makes use of Fourier inversion of the Capon spectral estimates and is referred to as theCapon method, is presented in this paper. It is shown that the Capon power spectral density (PSD) estimator yields an equivalent autoregressive (AR) or autoregressive moving-average (ARMA) process; hence, theexact covariance sequence corresponsing to the Capon spectrum can be computed in a rather convenient way. Also, without much accuracy loss, the computation can be significantly reduced via an approximate Capon method that utilizes the fast Fourier transform (FFT). Using a variety of ARMA signals, we show that Capon covariance estimates are generally better than standard sample covariance estimates and can be used to improve performances in DSP applications that are critically dependent on the accuracy of the covariance sequence estimates.

Notizen: Abstract Results in the study of signal processing based on the use of parameter structural modeling (PSM) are presented. First, we introduce a special form of time-series modeling based on signal-dependent building blocks. Such modeling is used in the design of a nestedform transversal structure, known as a composite filter, based on a shift-invariant finite impulse resonse (FIR) as well as infinite impulse response (IIR) building blocks. The newly proposed composite PSM model (CPSM) possesses a unique feature, namely, its ability to suppress one signal of a given structure, while at the same time being ideally transparent to another one. The intrinsic property of this proposed CPSM is its enhanced insensitivity with respect to noise as well as its ability to fast track, in contrast to the commonly used linear line-enhancer based on conventional autoregressive moving average (ARMA), thus leading to a more practically sound processing of short-duration signals. It is shown that the proposed time-series modeling based on CPSM can be effectively applied towards the separation of superimposed signals of heavily overlapping spectra. Next, the parameter-invariant nonlinear structural signal representation based on shift-invariant CPSM is presented. The use of this model in the design of annihilation operators (AO) is described, and composite parameter-free structural modeling (CPFSM) is developed. Based on this model, two canonical forms of the parameter-invariant null filters (PINF) are presented, and their use in the suppression of a given class of signals, independently of the values of theira priori unknown parameters, is illustrated. The paper also presents some simulation examples illustrating the application of the proposed CPSM and CPFSM in solving problems of detection and parameter estimation in the presence of highly non-Gaussian, mainly signal-like interferences.

Notizen: Abstract This work is motivated by the need forFaithful digital simulation of cellular neural networks (CNNs) that maintains most of their qualitative properties of stability and convergence. An interconnection of nonlinear digital filters mimicking behaviors of the analog CNNs is proposed, and the main properties are studied in detail. The discrete model obtained is proven to have the same convergence properties as the original analog network. The key to this development is the use of anAppropriate discretization scheme. Our discrete approximation to the nonlinear state-space representation of cellular neural networks is such that the Lyapunov function used to show convergence in analog cellular neural networks is still a Lyapunov function (when appropriately discretized) for our nonlinear digital filter network. This is in contrast to other digital simulations of CNNs, which have not been proven to preserve the convergence properties. The network of nonlinear digital filters so introduced thus adds another item to the catalog of digital filters obtained viaappropriate discretization of analog circuits, e.g., wave digital filters, orthogonal filters, and certain other of their more recently studied nonlinear counterparts.

Notizen: Abstract This paper presents in summarizing form a description of halfband filters and the related symmetrical Hilbert transformers. It starts with the two complemetary relations by which halfband filters are defined and the consequences for their impulse responses. The idealized versions of the frequency responses of halfband lowpasses and Hilbert transformers are introduced, and the related tolerance schemes that realized systems must satisfy are described. Using their frequency responses, the transformation of one filter type into the other is presented in general form. The design of finite impulse response (FIR)-halfband filters and their relation to corresponding Hilbert transformers are recalled, using maximally flat and Chebyshev approximations as examples. It is shown that the relation between both types of systems can be used for the infinite impulse response (IIR) case as well. The design of IIR-halfband filters is presented for systems with approximately linear phase and for those with minimum phase again for maximally flat and Chebyshev approximations. The design methods are partly new. The general procedure for the transformation into Hilbert transformers yields noncausal solutions, one of which is already known from the literature. By modifying this operation, phase-splitting systems are obtained, one of them related to corresponding continuous ones, discussed in papers published around 1950. Another system with approximately linear phase corresponds to a paper presented in 1987. Finally, the coupled form of these phase splitting allpasses is found to be a Hilbert transformer with precise phase difference, but with deviations of the magnitudes of the frequency responses.

Notizen: Abstract The matched field processing (MFP) localization performance of very low frequency (VLF) arrays operated in the deep ocean basins appears to be limited more by uncertainty in the sound velocity profile (SVP) than by low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). We present a new robust variation of MFP designed to be less sensitive to velocity error in weakly inhomogeneous environments. We analyze the computational requirements of this and other MFP algorithms. When either the search volume is large of the acoustic array is large, computational efficiency is an issue. We present an efficient MFP implementation for the conventional MFP algorithm and our robust algorithm. We show that parallel implementation of these algorithms may allow real-time performance.

Notizen: Abstract By applying results from homotopy theory, new conditions are obtained for the existence and uniqueness of an equilibrium for a class of continuous-time feedback neural networks which contains the Hopfield model as a special case. Next, new criteria are established for the global asymptotic stability of the unique equilibrium of this class of neural networks by utilizing Lur'e-type Lyapunov functions and the stability theory for systems of differential inequalities. Several practical stability testing conditions are given. As a special case, criteria are derived for the global asymptotic stability of Hopfield neural networks. This is followed by a robustness analysis of the class of neural networks considered. The results obtained are then applied to an optimization problem.

Notizen: Abstract Functional artificial neural networks (FANNs) are artificial neural networks (ANNs) in which the synaptic weights are “functions” rather than numbers. Thus the signals in such networks are analog, and the action of a synapse on a signal passing through it takes place in the form of a scalar product inL 2 between the functional weight and the signal. In this paper, four classes of FANNs are introduced. They result from the solution of a nonparametric optimization problem in a generalized Fock space (GFS) of abstract Volterra series under interpolating or smoothing input-output training data constraints. Two of these classes of FANNs correspond to the interpolating case and are represented by what we call the (two-layer)optimal interpolating (OI) FANN and theoptimal multilayer neural interpolating (OMNI) FANN. The remaining two classes correspond to the smoothing case. We name their representations as the (two-layer)optimal smoothing (OS) FANN and theoptimal smoothing multilayer artificial neural (OSMAN) FANN. In addition to providing the background and the derivation of these FANNs, this paper presents a novel approach to their implementation. This approach does away with the computationally cumbersome use of functional weights. Instead, the effect of these weights is provided by linear time-invariant differential equation models of which those weights are impulse responses. These are implemented by a linear filter bank. This approach thus leads to simple and meaningful causal realizations of FANNs which we call Dynamical FANNs or simply D-FANNs.

Notizen: Abstract In this paper, we study the problem of maximizing an objective function over the discrete set {−1, 1} n using a neural network. It is now known that a binary (two-state) Hopfield network can take, in the worst case, an exponential number of time steps to find even a local maximum of the objective function. In this paper, we carry this argument further by studying theradius of attraction of the global maxima of the objective function. If a binary neural network is used, in general there is no guarantee that a global maximum has a nonzero radius of attraction. In other words, even if the optimization process is started off with the neural network in an initial state that isadjacent to the global maximum, the resulting trajectory of the network may not converge to the nearby maximum, but may instead go off to another maximum. At the same time, another set of recent results shows that, if ananalog neural network is used to optimize the same objective function, thenevery local maximum of the objective function has a nontrivial domain of attraction, and conversely, the only equilibria that are attractive are the local maxima of the objective function. This raises the question as to whether analog neural networks offer some advantages over binary neural networks for optimizing the same objective function. As a motivation for this line of inquiry, we study the problem of decoding an algebraic block code using a neural network. It is shown that the binary neural network implementation has the undesirable property thatall the global maxima of the objective function have azero radius of attraction. In contrast, if an analog neural network is used to maximize exactly the same objective function, the region of attraction of each maximum contains not only the associated “orthant” of the state space, but also some points not in this orthant. In other words, the analog implementation exhibits the desired tolerance to transmission errors, whereas the binary neural network does not have this property. With this motivation, two open questions are posed that provide a program of research for studying the possible superiority of analog neural networks over binary neural networks.

Notizen: Abstract We present a new statistical technique for average power estimation in sequential circuits. Because of the feedback loops, power dissipations of sequential circuits in consecutive clock cycles are temporally correlated. The existence of data correlation makes it unsuitable to apply conventional techniques to average power inference, because the sample variance is no longer a maximum likelihood estimator. The convergence criterion derived from the biased variance estimation will be overly optimistic, causing power simulation to stop prematurely at a lower-than-specified estimation accuracy. To overcome this problem, we propose a systematic approach for modeling the power dissipation behavior of sequential circuits as an autoregressive random process. An accurate process variance can be obtained by the model parameters, which enables the derivation of a robust confidence interval of the average power. The interval is checked for convergence against a user-specified accuracy criterion. An iterative procedure is developed to invoke these steps repeatedly until the convergence specification is met. For a set of benchmark sequential circuits, this technique yields high accuracy and efficiency.

We use numerical examples to demonstrate the performance of the RELAX algorithm for parameter estimation with the COLD array and compare it with the performance of the MODE (Method of Direction Estimation) algorithm. Notizen: Abstract In this paper we present a number of image processing applications using coordinate logic filters, which execute coordinate logic operations among the pixels of the image. These filters are very efficient in various 1D, 2D, or higher-dimensional digital signal processing applications, such as noise removal, magnification, opening, closing, skeletonization, and coding, as well as in edge detection, feature extraction, and fractal modeling. In this paper we present some typical image processing applications using coordinate logic filters. The key issue in the coordinate logic analysis of images is the method of fast successive filtering and managing of the residues. The desired processing is achieved by executing only direct logic operations among the pixels of the given image. Coordinate logic filters can be easily and quickly implemented using logic circuits or cellular automata; this is their primary advantage.
