Notizen: We consider the effects of using urethane rubber/epoxide resin blends as matrices for unidirectional glass and carbon fiber and for balanced-weave glass fiber cloth composites. The mechanical properties of the unreinforced resin and various composites were measured for specimens with matrices containing up to 35 percent of urethane. The properties of the unreinforced resin show very marked changes between 30 and 35 percent of urethane due, it is believed, to the existence of discrete regions of urethane polymer throughout the matrix. The transverse properties of the unidirectional carbon fiber composites are significantly enhanced by the presence of 20 percent of urethane in the matrix without, apart from a decrease in the shear modulus, any marked change in other properties. This could prove useful in the applications of carbon fiber composites. Results for glass fiber materials are less dramatic, possibly because of poorer adhesion between the glass fiber and the urethane. If this is indeed the cause of the results, it should be possible to bring about an improvement for glass fiber composites by using fibers coated with a suitable coupling agent.

Notizen: In poly(butylene terephthalate) based compositions, thermal degradation of the polymer matrix during processing has to be minimized to achieve quality products. Experience has shown a temperature-residence time relationship, indicating that for mixing systems with high product temperatures, the residence time of the product has to be reduced to avoid excessive thermal degradation. The power density of the mixing system is related to the specific energy input and the residence time of the product. From rheology, the power density is also known for a simple shear deformation which can thus be used to characterize the shear intensity of a particular mixing process. Comparing two different mixing systems by their power density provides us with a qualitative better understanding why higher shear is permitted with lower residence time. From theoretical considerations it was found that for a temperature-sensitive product, like PBT, the power density in the mixing operation can be further raised, taking into account that with shorter residence time a higher product temperature is permitted. Production-scale test work was carried out on a 200 mm screw-diameter continuous kneader to investigate the effect of running conditions and screw design on the thermal degradation of two different types of PBT. Results have shown that for the high-viscosity PBT a linear relationship exists between product temperature and the viscosity retained upon compounding. In a two-stage kneader only minor thermal degradation is encountered in the melting section, but conditions become critical in the mixing stage due to the viscosity increase after introducing the glass fibers to the melt. A new feature in compounding thermodegradable products is the addition of unmolten polymer into the mixing stage of the kneader since this leads to a reduction in the product end temperature and, consequently, thermal degradation of the matrix material. The limited results obtained so far indicate that an optimum exists as to the amount of pellets added. At a 15 percent level the product temperature was reduced by 20°C as compared to 10°C at 20 percent. An energy balance carried out on the continuous kneader indicates that because of the low melt viscosity approximately 30 percent of the energy put into the product in the melting section of the kneader originates from external heating. A rough comparison shows that the power density of a continuous kneader is twice that of a single-screw extruder designed for compounding PBT, but, can be tolerated because of the considerably lower residence time in the former mixing system.

Notizen: Creep experiments carried out on transparent and translucent polymers permit the observation of irreversible material damage in the form of crazes or microcracks. The formation of such damage is strongly dependent on the applied stress, temperature and environmental conditions. The first appearance of observable material damage seems to be explicable by an energy criterion. The energy supplied by the external load can be divided into conserved and dissipated parts, each of them causing volume (isotropic) and shape (deviatoric) changes. The different parts of the energy can be computed if the creep-compliance is approximated by a Prony-Dirichlet series with a finite number of terms. Computations carried out for experiments with air as the environmental medium under isothermal conditions show the dependence between the appearance of first visible material damage (crazes or microcracks) and the conserved energy.

Notizen: A critical factor in the performance of fillers in plastics composites is the manner in which the particles pack together. This is called the packing fraction; the true volume occupied by a filler divided by its apparent total volume. The means for determining packing fraction and its effect on viscosity and physical, thermal, electrical and economic properties are outlined.

Notizen: Short glass fiber-epoxy laminates of controlled fiber orientation and distribution were loaded to failure under uniaxial tension. The mechanical characteristics of specimens with different orientation patterns, which were determined experimentally, were compared with analytical predictions based on “Laminate Analogy” methods. Results show good agreement between empirical data and prediction in the case of stiffness, stress-strain relationship and strength based on ultimate strain criteria. A methodology is proposed according to which a well-defined, orthotropic, short fiber reinforced plastic system can be prepared, analyzed, and optimized by tailoring it according to the loading pattern in a similar manner to that of the well-established, continuous fiber reinforced laminates.

Notizen: Reinforcement mechanisms of fiber-glass reinforced plastics (FRP) under wet conditions are reviewed with emphasis on molecular structures of glass/matrix interfaces. Included are studies on glass surface, the glass/coupling agent interface, silane coupling agents on glass surfaces as well as in solution, the coupling agent/matrix interface, extending to the interphase of particulate-filled composites, and matrix resin. For a better understanding of wet strength of FRP, the structures under dry conditions are extensively, reviewed. The chemical bonding theory still dominates other reinforcement theories. The importance of other factors such as orientation of silane coupling agents and the restriction of matrix polymer conformations are also considered. Based on recent development in spectroscopy, molecular level research of the glass/matrix interfaces has been initiated in the past decade, yet only a few spectroscopic investigations on the function of water have appeared. It is concluded that the correlation between spectroscopic investigations and mechanical properties of a FRP is indispensable.

Notizen: An experimental study was carried out to investigate the development of stress birefringence patterns of molten polymer during the mold filling and cooling operation. For this study, a rectangular mold cavity with glass windows on both sides was constructed, which permitted us to record on a movie film the changes in stress birefringence patterns in the mold cavity during the molding operation, using a circular polariscope. The mold was equipped with an automatic relay system which closes the shut-off valve when the pressure in the mold cavity reaches a predetermined value. The mold was also equipped with both heating and cooling devices, so that either isothermal or non-isothermal injection molding could be carried out. The mold temperature was controlled by thermistor regulated controllers. During the entire cycle of the molding operation, the mold cavity pressure was continuously recorded on a chart recorder, using a melt pressure transducer. The present study shows how molding conditions (namely, injection pressure, melt temperature, mold temperature) influence the distribution of stress birefringence patterns in a molten polymer while it is being injected into, and cooled in, a rectangular mold cavity.

Notizen: A polybenzimidazole having the structural repeat unit and designated AB-PBI was formed into films by casting or precipitating from dilute solutions. Selected films were swollen in a plasticizing medium arid drawn about 2X. All films were dried in a vacuum oven to aid in the removal of residual solvent and moisture. Wide angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) was used to show the type of ordering found in this material and to indicate the extent of molecular orientation. Neither a glass transition nor a crystalline melting point has been observed for this polymer, A Perkin-Elmer DSC was used to scan the temperature range from -150 to H-400°C in search of secondary transitions. The rheovibron proved more sensitive and a transition was located in the vicinity of -60°C. An activation energy-was determined. The morphology of this polymer is subject to speculation. The ability of the chain to adopt a linear conformation leads to the possibility of a liquid-crystalline nature in solution. A model based on the data in hand is suggested. Stress-strain data was used to compare the mechanical properties of films prepared by several methods as well as to demonstrate the effect of orientation on strength.

Notizen: The volatile products from the thermal degradation of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) resins and compounds are shown to contain trace amounts of vinyl chloride. Data presented show the effect of temperature and resin type on the amount of vinyl chloride formed. At the maximum temperatures involved in PVC processing which may reach 210°C., vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) evolution amounts to less than 1 ppm (resin basis). A technique employing a thermogravimetric balance and charcoal adsorption of volatiles is described for studying thermal degradation of PVC. The volatiles are analyzed for vinyl chloride by gas chromatography. Peak identity was confirmed by mass spectrometry.

Notizen: Corona treatment of films, mainly polyethylene, was studied at commercial levels in a small continuous treater. Degree of treatment was characterized by measuring polar and dispersion components of surface energy, ASTM Wipe and ASTM Adhesion Ratio (“peel adhesion”). The chief factors studied were corona current, applied frequency, web speed, dielectric thickness and air-gap thickness between electrode and film. Other factors less intensively investigated were type of film, film additives, aging time after treatment, humidity and corona atmosphere. The polar component of surface energy, γSP, is the key to understanding the changes in adhesive behavior of the films during treatment. We found that, for the equipment used, γSP is accurately given by the equation \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ \gamma _S^P = 16.91\,D^{0.297}\, G^{- 0.404}\, S^{0.303} (1 - e^{- 1.95\,I/S}) $$\end{document} where D = dielectric thick ness and G = air gap, both in mils; S = web speed, ft/min; I = corona current, ma, and γSP is in dyne-cm/cm2. A similarly structured equation describes ASTM Wipe. Using measured surface-energy components for the pressure-sensitive tape used in the peel adhesion test, it was possible to calculate an adhesion interaction for each film on which peel adhesion was measured and to show that it closely correlates with peel strength. Humidity changes in the moderate-humidity range, number of electrodes used and corona frequency had little effect on properties. Slip additives inhibited development of adhesion until treatment levels became high; adhesion properties gradually diminished upon aging of films stored at ambient conditions.

Notizen: Filaments of polypropylene having remarkably high strength and modulus have been prepared by the two-stage drawing process of Clark and Scott (4). In the first stage, un-oriented extruded billet is rapidly drawn to the natural draw ratio of ca 7X in hot silicone oil. The second stage of draw, a post neck draw process termed superdrawing, requires a slow rate of draw at carefully controlled temperatures to achieve maximum property values; the optimum conditions appear to be close to 4 percent/min at 130°C, The highest mechanical properties obtained were a Young's modulus of 22 GPa (240 gdtex, 3 × 106 psi) and a tensile strength of 0.93 GPa (10 gdtex, 1.3 = 105 psi) with an elongation to break of 7 percent. The filaments show a distinctive dead bend lack of recovery, WAXS data indicate high orientation of the molecules. SAXS data show no scattering to a resolution of 40 nm which is interpreted in terms of a continuous crystal matrix in the superdrawn filament. SEM micrographs of fractured filaments reveal a morphology of large fibrils of lath like habit with a thickness of ca. 0.1 μm. A series of experiments relating mechanical properties to the rate and temperature of superdrawing is interpreted in terms of two competing mechanisms; shearing displacement of microfibrils and unfolding of chain-fold blocks. Models are offered to explain the observed mechanical and physical property changes on superdrawing.

Notizen: A discussion of the effect of deformation on mixing leads to reorientation of fluid interfaces as a proposed mechanism for special “mixing sections” in single screw extruders. Based on the kinematics of mixing it is shown how a mixing section can greatly decrease the amount of work necessary to accomplish extensive mixing through orienting the fluid more favorably for mixing by subsequent shear. Mathematical development quantitatively describes favored configurations of mixing sections. An upper bound for the mixing performance of a simple model of an extruder with special sections is shown to be similar to turbulent mixing. Based on this theory the key actions of the special sections are identified.

Notizen: Two models are used to describe vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) diffusion from poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) packages to food simulating solvents. It was found that when the initial solid concentration in a PVC package is 0,35 ppm: (a) For poor solvents such as water and oils, VCM concentration in the solvent, Cl, theoretically will not exceed 20 ppb. (b) For strong solvents, the volume ratio of package solid/solvent should not exceed 0.1 in order to keep (Cl)max below 20 ppb. (c) It was demonstrated that thickness can be adjusted to give a Cl = 20 ppb at the time equal to the shelf-life of the package. The method can also be used to calculate the initial concentration of VCM in a package which will give a proposed level of maximum Cl when the solvent and package geometry are fixed. VCM diffusion from PVC pressure pipe to pipe fluids was similarly analyzed.

Notizen: A graphical method based on dimensional analysis is presented for estimating the injection pressure and clamp force required for injection molding amorphous polymers to form disk-shaped parts with a constant wall thickness. A procedure is suggested for estimating clamp force when the projected area of the mold cavity is smaller than the surface area of one side of the molded part. The results reported here are based on a numerical simulation of a power-law fluid filling a cold mold at a constant injection rate. The dimensionless bulk temperature and the ratios of the nonisothermal injection pressure (clamp force) to the isothermal injection pressure (clamp force) are given as functions of the dimensionless cooling time τ, the Brinkman number Br which characterizes viscous heating, the power-law exponent n, and a dimensionless temperature β which includes the inlet melt and mold wall temperatures and the temperature coefficient for viscosity.

Notizen: A major objective in polymer rheology is to predict a fluid's response to a general deformation from molecular information. A method has been developed which allows one to predict the viscoelastic properties of polymer melts from a limited amount of rheological and molecular data for the polymer. The input parameters are: (a) zero-shear viscosity; (b) molecular weight distribution; (c) temperature and density; and (d) constants relating Graessley's relaxation time to the Rouse relaxation time. The technique then “simulates” a discrete relaxation spectrum using G′ and G″ data from the Rouse theory and finally requires that a continuum model of polymer viscoelasticity be fit to shear viscosity data predicted by Graessley's theory. Examples of the utility of the procedure are given to illustrate the role of molecular weight and weight distribution in determining rheological behavior.

Notizen: The purpose of this work was to determine if capillary extrusion rheometer and mechanical spectrometer data can be used to predict the molding performance of a commercially available diallyl phthalate (DAP) compound. In addition, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) curves of “good” and “bad” batches were statistically analyzed in order to determine if the DSC peak shape is related to the molding performance. It was found that the data obtained from all three techniques correlate very well with the molding behavior of the DAP material studied. Capillary rheometer and mechanical spectrometer results show that lower melt viscosities and lower curing rates are desirable for obtaining satisfactory molding performance. The mathematical moments analysis of DSC curves indicates that DAP batches which molded well give peaks of fairly high symmetry, while all peaks of “bad” batches are skewed to the left. The center of gravity of the former is at a higher temperature and the variance is smaller than the corresponding values of “bad” compounds.

Notizen: Divalent metal salts of ethylene glycol-methacrylate-maleate in the amorphous state were easily soluble in styrene, methyl methacrylate and ethyl acrylate, to give homogeneous, curable mixtures with high metal content. The viscosities of the mixtures varied depending on the metal present. The mixtures were copolymerized to give metal-containing cured resins of increased compressive strength and Rockwell hardness. Moreover, heat distortion temperature could be improved by introducing Mg or Ca. Of the cured resins studied, the Mg-containing resin showed the best physical properties. Resistance of the metal-containing resins to attack by organic solvents was generally high, whereas greater degradation by aqueous reagents was noted. The thermal behavior of the resins is discussed.

Notizen: The operation of a twin screw extruder processing a powder or granular solid is reviewed. The operating variables of screw speed and barrel temperature profile interact with a number of design parameters -  screw design, die geometry, feed zone geometry and with the material properties, in determining machine performance. The factors that determine output and pressure development are specified in a sequence of block diagrams. The dynamic response of an operating machine to disturbances in the steady state conditions is explained in the light of the established relationships and interpreted in conventional control theory terms. Attention is drawn to the importance of mixing in the chambers formed by the screw channels and of the residence time distribution in determining the quality of the final product.

Notizen: Highly oriented filaments of nylon 6 and polypropylene (PP) are shown to craze when deformed slowly at room temperature. A marked yield point occurs at 20-40 percent elongation. After this point extensive voiding occurs until at fracture the overall density is reduced by ∽25 percent for PP and ∽15 percent for nylon 6. SAXS analysis indicates that for PP the voids are elongated in the fiber axis while for nylon 6 voiding occurs both parallel and perpendicular to the fiber axis. Optical and electron microscopy show typical craze structures. The use of etching demonstrates that crazing occurs across the whole filament cross section. This yielding behavior is shown to be associated with the use of a low temperature of drawing during fiber production and becomes less important when a higher temperature of drawing or a separate annealing step are used. The crazing mechanism is thought to involve progressive separation of interfibril boundaries with the production of elongated voids.

Notizen: ABA block copolymers were prepared by the anionic polymerization of α-methyl-α-butyl-β-propiolactone, MBPL (B block), and pivalolactone, PL (A blocks). The MBPL block had a very low decree of crystallinity and a glass temperature of - 13°C, so phase separation with extensive crystallization of the PL blocks gave thermoplastic elastomers when the MBPL block constituted the principal and continuous phase. The observed crystallinity and melting point of 40-45°C in the MBPL homopolymer have not been previously reported. Measurements were obtained by electron microscopy of the initial size distribution of the PL domains as a function of copolymer composition and degree of polymerization, and on the effect of annealing on this parameter. Tensile strengths and elongations at break were both less than those previously observed for equivalent ABA block copolymers of PL and α-methyl-α-propyl-β-propiolactone.

Notizen: Temperature was calculated as a function of lateral and axial position within a thin poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) tape traveling alternately over a heated roll and through air. The system consists of a pair of rolls which are internally heated and located in an oven. The centers of the rolls are ten inches apart and the tape makes eight wraps around the roll pair. Three sources of heat transfer to the tape are considered: convection and radiation from the heated rolls, convection from the air, and radiation from the hot oven walls. Calculations were carried out for oven wall temperatures of 100 and 1000°C, air temperatures of 100 and 205°C, and roll surface temperatures of 180 and 235°C. The computations generally indicate that after several wraps the temperature of the outside surface of the tape (i.e., the surface that does not contact the rolls) is essentially the same each time the tape leaves the roll. However, this temperature changes us the tape then travels through the adjacent, downstream air space. Although there is a temperature gradient across the tape, the temperature of the inside surface (i.e., the side that contacts the rolls) exhibits behavior similar to that of the outside surface.

Notizen: The cross section geometry of fully wiped corotating twin screws is derived from simple kinematic principles. A pair of screws can have identical cross sections with each screw running at the same speed, or they can have an unequal number of tips and rotate at different speeds. The more conventional case of equal cross section is reviewed in detail, showing how screw diameter, centerline distance, lead, and number of tips influences design, net volumes, and surface areas. The screw cross section is unique for a given diameter, centerline distance, and number of tips. The construction of the cross section is shown, both for pairs of identical screws, and for screws with a speed ratio. Maps are provided to show applicability of screws with 1, 2, and 3 tips.

Notizen: The effects of thermal treatment, residual solvent, and preswelling on the thermal properties and swelling behavior of solution cast polyblend films of poly(2,6-dimethyl,1,4-phenylene oxide) (PPO) and polystyrene (PS) were determined. Repeated cycling in the DSC analysis of the “as cast” films suggested that the original films contained residual casting solvent and that solvent-induced crystallization occurred in the PPO-rich compositions. Crystallinity was, apparently, eliminated by the first heating cycle in the differential scanning calorimeter. Sorption kinetics and apparent equilibria, characterizing the penetration of these films by n-hexane from the vapor phase, indicated that both the sorption rate and apparent equilibria are significantly affected by the prior history of the film samples. The sorption results presented here are quantitatively consistent with earlier studies of the PPO-PS system. The increased rate and amount of sorption observed in preswollen samples, and the reduced rate and amount of sorption observed in annealed samples are consistent with recent descriptions of sorption behavior in diverse glassy homopolymer systems.

Notizen: This paper deals with two kinds of internal stresses in amorphous polymers. First, the internal stresses connected with molecular orientation are discussed. A framework is presented that describes the interrelations of the various orientation effects (anisotropy, birefringence, etc.) and their dependence on the thermomechanical history of the material. The second part of the paper deals with the residual thermal stresses generated by rapid inhomogeneous cooling through the glass transition range. These so-called cooling stresses are well-known in glass technology. The theory of the quenching of flat glass plates is described, generalized to objects of arbitrary geometry, and shown to be applicable to polymers. The practical importance of cooling stresses is discussed.

Notizen: Kinetic studies on shear degradation of a polystyrene (M̄n = 115,700 and P̄n = 1113) during extrusion in a model extruder were made at different temperatures (170, 190, 210, and 230°C) and shear stresses (340,406, and 472 g/cm2) for determination of rate constants for degradation, reaction order, and effects of temperature and stress on the rate constants. Mechanical energy and effective activation energy (E*) of bond rupture were related to temperature and applied stress. The following results were obtained. The degradation process is found to be satisfied by a second order reaction over the temperatures and stresses studied with respect to the changes in number average chain length (Pt - P∞), thus -dP/dt = k(Pt - P∞)2, where k is a reaction rate constant and t and ∞ refer to degradation times. The mechanical energy of bond rupture has a maximum and the rate constant a minimum at about 180°C, indicating that the least effective temperature for mechanical degradation is about 180°C. E* decreases with increasing applied stress (τ) as a linear relationship, i.e., E* = EA - ατ. At τ = 0, E* becomes equal to the activation energy for thermal degradation with the value EA = 48.6 kcal/mole which agrees well with literature data. Temperature and stress effects on the rate constant are well expressed for our study by the Arrhenius equation proposed by Zhurkov, et al., i.e., k = A exp[-(Ea - ατ)/RT] where A and α are coefficients.

Notizen: Instrumented pendula have been applied to investigate the fracture toughness of some polymeric materials - homopolymers and composites - by fracture mechanics. The method is simple, and can be easily used for routine testing or research work. The load transducer is such that it allows the achievement of very accurate stress-time curves. Data are reported which clearly show the dependence of Kc on speed, temperature, and molecular weight. Kc is the critical stress intensity factor. It has also been found that the Kc experimental values can be correlated with a peculiar feature of the fracture surface for the determination of the intrinsic value of Kc/1 by the use of both the Dugdale model and a simple graphic correlation.

Notizen: The solubility of vinyl chloride (VCM) vapor in poly (vinyl chloride) (PVC) in a water slurry has been measured between 55 and 65°C. The heat and entropy of sorption were shown to be very close to those of condensation. The solubilities measured in this study were higher than those obtained in other studies on dry PVC and PVC latex. The interaction parameter (x) in the Flory-Huggins equation has been shown to vary between 0.34 and 0.61 over the composition range studied. The effect of ageing the slurry in the presence of VCM is also discussed.

Notizen: Ablation produced by 10.6 μm laser irradiation of eleven polymers is reported. Polymers which formed a carbonaceous residue were found to have much higher ablation energies than cleanly ablating polymers. All non-char forming polymers studied had observed laser ablation energies in the range 3.4-3.9 KJ/g except for poly (α-methylstyrene) which had a value of 2.4 KJ/g. The low value forpoly (α-methylstyrene) is attributed to an exceptionally efficient depolymerization. The observed ablation energy of poly (methyl methacrylate) was found to decrease with increasing irradiance up to about 15 watts/cm2, reaching a constant value of 3.5 KJ/g at irradiances between 20 and 2600 watts/cm2. The proposed process of laser ablation is one that involves random fragmentation resulting from the accumulation of vibronic energy.

Notizen: Damage to poly (vinyl chloride) (PVC) compounds due to thermal degradation during processing has an important influence on its subsequent weatherability. High melt temperatures and/or high residence times cause white PVC to become more yellow and colored PVC to fade and bleach more upon weathering. If high melt temperatures are used, then short residence times are needed to maintain excellent weatherability. In addition to careful consideration of extrusion conditions, stream-lined equipment is necessary to produce extrudate of uniform thermal history. Also, relatively high thermal stabilizer levels help reduce thermal damage and, therefore, improve weatherability. Impact resistance is better retained when processing occurs at higher melt temperatures. A reasonable compromise between extrusion rate and temperature must be reached to provide for adequate color and impact retention.

Notizen: The effect of filler particle size distribution on the viscosity of an aluminum trihydroxide/unsaturated polyester resin dispersion was studied. Four basic aluminum trihydroxides with distinctively different particle sizes were combined to generate various particle size distributions systematically. The particle size distribution producing the minimum viscosity was determined by employing a modified extreme vertices experiment design for mixtures to establish a quadratic model which was then optimized. The predicted viscosities in general as well as the particle size distribution corresponding to the minimum viscosity agreed well with the observed data.

Notizen: The tensile properties of high and low density polyethylene specimens produced under careful crystallization and annealing procedures have been determined. A morphologically controlled brittle-ductile transition has been observed for high density polyethylene. Although the lamellar thickness appears to determine the transition, a postulate involving molecular fractional on during crystallization as the cause is offered. For ductile materials, dependence of the Young's Modulus on morphology is interpreted using the fiber-composite analogy of Halpin and Kardos. Yield stress varies as modulus and achieves maximum values consistent with estimates of the critical resolved shear stress of polyethylene crystals.

Notizen: A new technique is described whereby the rate of collapse of an air bubble within a molten polymer may be measured without the need for visual observation. The method involves use of a high speed recording dilatometer, From such data it is possible to measure an apparent elongational viscosity of the melt, and such measurements are presented for two polyethylenes (Tennite, a low density PE, and Plaskon, a high density PE), Limitations of the methods are discussed. This is one of a series of papers (1-3) documenting our development of a new experimental technique, and the corresponding mathematical modeling, whereby one may measure the elongational viscosity of polymeric viscoelastic fluids. Previous experimental work was confined to transparent fluids, since the technique depended on high-speed motion picture photography of the collapse of an air bubble within the fluid. In this paper we describe an attempt, largely successful, to develop a new experimental system which permits the study of molten polymers, including opaque fluids. Sample results are presented for both a low and a high density polyethylene.

Notizen: Filaments of ultra-oriented high density polyethylene were solid-state extruded at an extrusion (draw) ratio of 26 and subsequently irradiated under vacuum by a cobalt-60 source at doses of 10,15, 20, 40 and 60 megarads (MRad). Several identically prepared but unirradiated strands were also tested. One set of samples at each dose was immersed in a silicone oil bath for one half hour at 128°C and one set was given no post-irradiation thermal treatment. Characterization of the resultant morphologies included differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), birefringence, thermomechanical analysis (TMA), and tensile testing. Results from DSC measurements indicate that initial radiation crosslinking only slightly disrupts the crystal lattice, but on subsequent melting and re crystallization, the chains are unable to recrystallize effectively in their former habit. In all cases, melting point and crystallinity decrease with increasing radiation dose. Birefringence and TMA results indicate that orientation is not disrupted by irradiation. For unannealed samples, Young's modulus increases slightly then levels off while tensile strength and elongation at break increase initially, then drop, For annealed irradiated samples, Young's modulus rises at first, then levels off at higher doses. Tensile strength and elongation at break increase significantly with increasing radiation treatment, then essentially reach constant values at highest doses.

Notizen: By means of compounding, we have developed a rigid poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) formulation with improved overall combustion properties. Newly developed analytical methods indicate a considerable reduction in the level of gases released during combustion, in addition to excellent flammability characteristics and low visible smoke emission levels. The analytical methods discussed are expected to aid in the selection of a feasible protocol for biological testing and in the interpretation of results obtained from such testing. The under-lying compounding technology is currently restricted to normal impact rigid PVC cube compounds but expected to be expanded into high impact PVC, flexible PVC, PVC powder compounds and cellular PVC.

Notizen: It is shown that the technique of dynamic spring analysis (DSA) gives rise to a dynamic mechanical loss dispersion well above the glass transition temperature, Tg, analogous to the Tu process observed in torsional braid analysis. A mechanical model is proposed which explains why any composite sample consisting of an elastic support coupled to a viscous liquid must necessarily produce such a relaxation regardless of whether the liquid is monomeric or polymeric in nature. Loss tangent measurements performed on a series of polystyrenes of varying molecular weight and on glycerol using both DSA and a Rheometrics mechanical spectrometer show that the relaxation observed in DSA is not of molecular origin.

Notizen: The effect of glass-resin interface strength on the impact energy of glass fabric (style 181) reinforced epoxy and polyester laminates has been determined. The interface strength was altered by surface treatment of the fabrics with silane coupling agents and with a silicone fluid mold release and the interlaminar shear strength was determined as a means to evaluate the interface strength. An instrumented Charpy impact test was used on unnotehed specimens and thus both initiation and propagation energies could be determined as well as dynamic strength. It was found that the initiation energy for both polyester and epoxy laminates increased with increasing interlaminar shear strength, The propagation energy and thus the total energy for polyester laminates displays a minimum at a critical value of interlaminar shear strength (ILSS). Below this critical value, the total impact energy increases with decreasing shear strength and the dominant energy absorption mode appears to be delamination. Above the critical value, the impact energy increases with increasing values of ILSS and the fracture mode is predominantly one of fiber failure. In all cases, even with mold release applied, the shear strength of epoxy laminates was above this critical value and-thus the total impact energy increases with Increasing values of ILSS. The maximum energy absorbed for the epoxy laminate and the polyester laminate is nearly identical. However, the maximum for the epoxy laminate occurs when the shear strength is maximized while for the polyester laminate the shear strength must be minimized. For the polyester laminate when delamination is predominant, it was found that the glass surface treatment affects the amount of delamination as opposed to the specific value of delamination fracture work.

Notizen: The mathematically-analogous equations of elasticity were used to predict the transport properties of anisotropic composite films. Composite films of controlled structural and physical characteristics were prepared by embedding impermeable glass ribbons in a cellulose acetate matrix. Simple but approximately-precise equations of composite moduli developed by Halpin and Tsai were used to predict the composite permeability in terms of the permeabilities of the constituent phases and a structure factor which is a measure of the filler reinforcement and signifies the resistance of the filler phase to the diffusive flow in the composite medium. The discrepancy between the theoretical predictions and experimental composite permeabilities has been explained in terms of diffusive flux lines not staying in a single direction. In the case of glass ribbons the diffusive1 flow lines tend to bend away from the ribbons (regions of lower permeabilities). The extent of influence of the filler phase to impede the overall composite permeation is a function of the geometry, orientation and volume fraction of the filler.

Notizen: An experimental study was carried out to investigate the phenomenon of interfacial instability in multilayer flat-film coextrusion. For the study, a sheet-forming die with a feed block was used to coextrude three-and five-layer flat films. Polymers coextruded were: (a) low-density polyethylene with polystyrene, and (b) high-density polyethylene with polystyrene. It was observed that, for a given polymer system, there is a critical value of wall shear stress at which an irregular (i.e., unstable) interface between the layers sets in, giving rise to a pattern similar to that usually found in a wood panel. Once the instability sets in, the severity of interfacial instability is found to depend on both the total volumetric flow rate (hence wall shear stress) of the combined streams and the ratio of the individual layer thicknesses. An attempt is made to correlate the critical conditions for the onset of interfacial instability in terms of the layer thickness ratio, and the viscosity and elasticity ratios of the two polymers being coextruded.

Notizen: A finite difference procedure was used to solve the equation of conservation of energy with the lubrication approximation. The temperature profiles due to viscous dissipation in the gap formed by a pair of equal sized rolls rotating at the same speed exhibit two maxima in the vicinity of the roll surfaces. The maximum temperatures also exhibit two local maxima and a minimum in the direction of flow. The calculated temperature distributions across and along the flow field reveal the possibility of excessive local heating which might be detrimental for certain temperature sensitive materials such as poly(vinyl chloride) and rubbers.

Notizen: The effect of cold rolling and subsequent annealing on the anisotropy of tensile properties has been studied by annealing 33 percent cold rolled polyoxymethylene at 70, 120 and 170°C and measuring the properties at 0, 45 and 90° from the rolling direction. The mechanical and thermal treatments exhibit a significant effect on the directional nature of the properties. The changes in mechanical properties have been accounted for in terms of the changes in morphology, fracture behavior and orientation as studied by a differential thermal analyzer, electron microscopy and wide-angle X-ray diffraction.

Notizen: The relationship between synthesis factors and the impact resistance of high impact polystyrene (HIPS) is investigated in the light of its morphology and dynamic mechanical properties. A decrease in polymerization temperature results in an increase in Tg, melt viscosity and molecular weight of the continuous polystyrene phase as characterized by gel permeation chromatography. The separated, occluded polystyrene phase however shows an invariant Tg suggesting that the grafting and/or crosslinking effect overweighs the molecular weight effect. The observed high impact strength has been correlated with the homogeneous 1-2 μ rubber particle size distribution, a comparatively sharp rubber Tg transition at lower temperature, and a much lower occluded polystyrene content in the dispersed phase.

Notizen: The viscosity-shear rate functions for polysulfone (PSF) condensates ranging from 0.4RV to 0.95RV were determined using capillary rheometry, The most probable distribution of molecular weights of these resins allowed facile comparison with the polydisperse Bueche theory for viscosity, The agreement in shape of the viscosity function with theory was good but the data were displaced by a factor of 3 to 4 to higher reduced shear rate, a fairly common occurrence for melts. The high absolute value of PSF viscosity was explained with existing empirical correlations as a combination of low critical molecular weight and strong intermolecular interactions. The temperature dependence of viscosity was found to be close to that for polystyrene in the temperature range, Tg + 90 to Tg + 190°C. The die swell, end corrections, and melt fracture characteristics were also determined. The latter was found to occur at a constant wall shear stress of about 6 × 106 dynes/cm2 while the die swell and end corrections were found to be small.

Notizen: The strength and impact resistance of short fiber reinforced thermoplastics are greatly affected by the nature of the stress transfer interface which in turn is influenced by physico-chemical and geometric factors. The geometric factors are controlled by the compounding technology used to manufacture the composite. This paper describes the use of several compounding technologies and a method used to infer the effectiveness of those technologies from studies of molded part mechanical properties and glass fiber length distributions. Resin systems studied were acetal copolymer, polybutylene terephalate, and nylon 6,6.

Notizen: Data are presented for the thickness H∞ of liquid coating entrained by continuous withdrawal at speed U of a wire of radius R from the free surface of a large bath. For Newtonian fluids of viscosity μ, density ρ and surface tension σ, the data are carried out to coating speeds beyond the applicability of current theories, to Capillary numbers of nearly one hundred. In the high speed range the data, which cover several orders of magnitude in viscosity, can be well represented by the equation \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ D_\infty = H_\infty \left( {\frac{{\rho g}}{\sigma }} \right)^{{1 \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {1 2}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} 2}} = 0.15\left( {\frac{{U\mu }}{\sigma }} \right)^{{1 \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {1 2}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} 2}} $$\end{document} for Uμ/σ = Nca 〉 3. All data presented are at an essentially constant Goucher number of 0.08, where NGo ≡ R(ρg/2σ)1/2. Data for viscoelastic fluids show phenomena quite distinct, qualitatively and quantitatively, from Newtonian observations. In particular, strongly elastic fluids show a markedly reduced ability to be entrained onto the wire. Further, the coating thickness appears to become independent of Capillary number at high speed.

Notizen: Temperature measurements were made on the adiabatic polymerization of three urethane systems; two casting formulations, one thermoplastic and the other thermosetting, and a commercial reaction injection molding (RIM) formulation with a 10 second gel time. The data were found to fit a simple nth order overall kinetic expression. These kinetic and heat of reaction results were used to model heat transfer in a 3.8 cm diameter cylinder with an isothermal wall. Experimental temperature profiles for the two casting urethanes were in good agreement with predictions. The kinetic data on the RIM material was used to model temperature profiles1 in 3 and 6 mm thick plaque molds. Experimental measurements of temperature near the mold center agreed with the model. Temperatures measured near the wall were higher due to failure of the isothermal wall assumption.

Notizen: The design of wire-coating dies is described using finite element numerical analysis as a guide. Finite elements are able to accommodate awkward geometries and non-Newtonian fluid properties in a realistic manner, and produce streamline and stress patterns within the die. Two basic die geometries are examined and a new design which eliminates recirculation within the die is proposed.

Notizen: The processing of thermoplastics often requires conversion of a solid to a viscous fluid under shear conditions. In this study, solid blocks of polystyrene were softened on a hot, moving surface over a range of surface temperatures and velocities. The conservation equations for mass, momentum, and energy were applied to the fluid layer and simplified by an order of magnitude analysis. An integral method of solution was developed which predicted rates of softening that agreed closely with the measured rates.

Notizen: The high pressure crystallized specimens described in the preceding paper (1) were characterized by X-ray diffraction, density, and differential scanning calorimetry, Nitric acid etching, followed by gel permeation chromatography and DSC on the residues provided further characterization of the morphology. The crystallinity decreased from 100 to 80 percent with increasing molecular weight, over the range Mw = 4.9 × 104 to 4.6 × 106. The crystallites were predominately in extended chain morphology, but the percent in extended chain form decreased from 98 to 85 percent over the indicated molecular weight range. In all cases, there was a wide, bimodal or multi-modal, distribution of lamellar thickness. The physical characterization results were consistent with and complementary to the results from electron microscopy. The large differences in crystallinity and gross morphology readily account for observed molecular weight dependent differences in mechanical properties.

Notizen: An experimental study was carried out to gain a better understanding of the dynamic behavior of gas bubbles during the structural foam injection molding operation. For the study, a rectangular mold cavity with glass windows on both sides was constructed, which permitted us to record on a movie film the dynamic behavior of gas bubbles in the mold cavity as a molten polymer containing inert gas was injected into it. The mold was designed so that either isothermal or nonisothermal injection molding could be carried out. Materials used were polystyrene, high-density polyethylene, and polycarbonate. As chemical blowing agents, sodium bicarbonate (which generates carbon dioxide), a proprietary hydrazide and 5-phenyl tetrazole, both generating nitrogen, were used. Injection pressure, injection melt temperature, and mold temperature were varied to investigate the kinetics of bubble growth (and collapse) during the foam injection molding operation. It was found that the processing variables (e.g., the mold temperature, the injection pressure, the concentration of blowing agent) have a profound influence on the nucleation and growth rates of gas bubbles during mold filling. Some specific observations made from the present study are as follows: an increase in melt temperature, blowing agent concentration, and mold temperature brings about an increase in bubble growth but more non-uniform cell size and its distribution, whereas an increase in injection pressure (and hence injection speed) brings about a decrease in bubble growth but more uniform cell size and its distribution. Whereas almost all the theoretical studies published in the literature deal with the growth (or collapse) of a stationary single spherical gas bubble under isothermal conditions, in structural foam injection molding the shape of the bubble is not spherical because the fluid is in motion during mold filling. Moreover, a temperature gradient exists in the mold cavity and the cooling subsequent to mold filling influences bubble growth significantly. It is suggested that theoretical study be carried out on bubble growth in an imposed shear field under nonisothermal conditions.

Notizen: The analysis of molding operations for thermosetting polymers requires knowledge of the rheology and reaction rates of the materials. The purpose of this research was to measure kinetic and rheological data on diallyl phthalate resins and to integrate these results into models describing the flow behavior. The chemical kinetics of the curing reactions were derived from calorimetric measurements taken with a differential scanning calorimeter. The rheological data were measured with a mechanical spectrometer equipped with eccentric rotating discs. A model based on the theory of ideal rubber elasticity was used to correlate the elastic storage modulus with reaction time and temperature. For the region below the gel point, the dynamic viscosity exhibited a power law dependence on angular frequency and an Arrhenius dependence on temperature.

Notizen: Particulate-filled materials consisting of a continuous matrix phase and a discontinuous filler phase made up of discrete heterogeneous particles are simulated by an elementary model consisting of a single spherical particle embedded in an infinite matrix, the particle being constituted by a spherical core within a concentric spherical shell. The specific case studied is one in which the particle core and matrix are of the same glassy polymer, and particle shell is a rubbery material. The distributions of six suggested craze initiation factors in the region surrounding the single particle are calculated when the material is subjected to a uniform uniaxial tension at infinity. Results indicate that the critical regions for craze formation are located either at the pole or at the equator of the particle (the polar axis being parallel to the applied tension), depending on the criterion considered and on the relative size of the glassy core in the particle.

Notizen: The dependence on frequency of the limiting value of strain, ψL, for which linear Viscoelastic response occurs in eccentric rotating disks (ERD) flow is studied theoretically and experimentally. The theoretical investigations are based upon the general simple-fluid theory of Coleman and Noll. It is shown that according to this theory ψL becomes independent of angular velocity, ω, at relatively high frequencies, whereas ψL becomes inversely proportional to ω at sufficiently low frequencies. The results of previous investigations, based upon some special rheological models, are discussed. The behavior predicted by the simple-fluid theory is confirmed by experiments on polyisobutylene solutions.

Notizen: The recent experimental results on flow-induced crystallization by Pennings and coworkers show that extremely rigid polyethylene fibers can be obtained in a shear flow. On the other hand, the mechanism by which these flow-induced crystals are produced is still open to investigation. In this work a few aspects of fibrous crystal growth are theoretically investigated. The molecular dynamics of chains partly attached to the crystal and partly immersed in the solution is considered. The influence of temperature and of geometrical factors is also discussed.

Notizen: Both real and imaginary components of the complex shear viscosity have been determined as a function of strain amplitude, frequency and temperature for various samples of poly(vinyl chloride), PVC, and chlorinated PVC of increasing chlorine content, with the aid of a Rheometrics mechanical spectrometer using eccentric rotating disk geometry. Different methods of sample preparation (low temperature dry-blending, high temperature extrusion or calendering) were used to study thermomechanical history effects. Results obtained in the region of “linear” viscoelastic behavior were compared with those of capillary flow experiments: at relatively high temperatures the validity of the Cox-Merz relationship was confirmed. Use of time-temperature superposition procedures made it possible to predict the important variation of viscosity over a broad range of shear rates. The experimental results in particular with regard to the strong influence of temperature and thermal history, were tentatively interpreted in terms of a supermolecular structure due to the presence of ordered domains (microcrystallites) of variable amount and size. This interpretation was shown to be consistent with differential scanning calorimetry.

Notizen: Model blends of glassy amorphous polystyrene and each of four different crystallizable and rubbery polyolefins of varying side-chain molecular weight (polyethylene, polypropylene, poly(1-butene), poly (4-methyl-1-pentene)) have been prepared by melt extrusion of the polymeric components. Density measurements, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), swelling measurements, and X-ray diffraction have been performed on the extruded fibers. In all cases, over the entire range of blend composition, the polymeric blends are immiscible and incompatible. The DSC measurements indicated that the polystyrene Tg was not decreased after blending and that the small reductions in the crystallinity and melting point of the respective polyolefins was best explained by thermal and kinetic interference with homo-crystallization of the respective polyolefins in the blends. The volumetric swelling and gravimetric sorption of n-hexane in the various blends increased monotonically with polystyrene content. The companion experiments, relating axial swelling with polystyrene content, indicated that this particular mode of distension actually decreased with increasing polystyrene content. The composite results, including DSC, X-ray, density, volumetric swelling and axial swelling suggest that the polystyrene phase is essentially microfibrillar and oriented in the direction of extrusion.

Notizen: Blends of poly(vinylidene fluoride) PVF2, with poly(vinyl acetate), PVAc; with poly(vinyl propionate), PVPr; and with poly(vinyl butyrate), PVBu, were prepared by solution blending. Solutions containing PVF2 with either PVPr or PVBu exhibited phase separation, and it was concluded that neither of these polymers are miscible with PVF2. Phase separation did not occur with solutions containing PVF2 and PVAc. Dried samples of this blend system were subjected to differential thermal analysis, dynamical mechanical testing, and visual observations of their melts. From these results, it was concluded that PVF2 and PVAc are miscible. The detailed results and the structural implications of these observations are discussed.

Notizen: Pyrolysis of polymer wastes appears to be a suitable means of dealing with an increasingly important environmental problem. To provide background on the pyrolytic behavior of wastes, model mixtures of polyethylene and polystyrene have been pyrolyzed in various gas phases including nitrogen and carbon monoxide, at atmospheric and at reduced pressures and at temperatures from about 300-900°C. When the pyrolyzing temperature is attained by gradual heating, and when pyrolysis occurs at pressures in excess of about 200 torr, the process occurs as if each component were present alone - that is, no evidence for component interaction was noted. In these cases, the known mechanisms for pyrolysis of the pure polymers can be applied to the behavior of mixtures. Complicating effects due to interactions between the starting polymers, or among the pyrolysis products, were observed in low pressure pyrolysis (≲20 torr); further, it was shown that the balance of pyrolysis products depends on rates of attaining the pyrolyzing temperature, more rapid rates favoring the production of carbon-rich solid residues of possible use as carbon blacks. More detailed understanding of pyrolytic processes in polymer mixtures is needed to permit selection of conditions producing the optimum balance of useful products.

Notizen: Experiments are performed on the dynamics of formation of a liquid coating picked up by a cylindrical roll rotating partially submerged in a free bath. Data on coating thickness for Newtonian fluids are found to correlate according to T = H(ρg/μU)1/2 = 0.56 for fluids whose viscosities range from 0.11 to 33 poise. Data for strongly non-Newtonian and Viscoelastic fluids (polyacrylamide solutions) can be forced to fit this correlation by defining an “equivalent coating viscosity.” It is clear that this defines a pseudo viscosity, because the “equivalent coating viscosity” is observed to increase with increasing roll speed. This suggests that strongly Viscoelastic fluids respond to the rapid deformation suddenly imposed in the dynamic meniscus near the pickup point in a distinctly elastic manner that alters the flow through the meniscus.

Notizen: The parison extrusion and the effects of post-extrusion swelling and sagging in the blow molding process have been studied by several authors and some qualitative relationships with rheological parameters have been attempted. The aim of this work is to show that, under some simplifying assumptions, the relevant rheological parameters - the swelling of the parison and its tensile compliance - can be directly determined from the viscoelastic analysis of the process. The reliability of the model has been tested by experiments carried out by the pinch-off mold technique which provides the parison weight profile as a function of both previous extrusion history and mold closing delay. First of all it has been shown that the proposed model is suitable to represent the data. The swelling behavior shows the expected dependence on time and shear rate and the long-time swelling data compare well with those determined by capillary extrusion experiments. It has also been found that the measured tensile compliance is of the same order of magnitude as that determined by conversion of tensile relaxation experiments; however, in the blow molding experiments the compliance of the parison decreases with increasing extrusion shear rate, i.e., by increasing the induced anisotropy of the polymer. As rheological examples, the performance displayed on both industrial and laboratory machines is discussed for three high density polyethylenes.

Notizen: Practical ways of processing thermoset materials by injection molding have been developed. These methods have been used particularly in the automotive and electrical industries. The tensile behavior is discussed for specimens which were injection molded from reinforced and filled phenolic unsaturated polyester and epoxy resin. This behavior aids the layout of flow paths. Under static loads the materials show less creep than most thermoplastics. “Post shrinkage” was observed as a shortening of specimens under prolonged heating. Because of brittleness, the materials failed under dynamic load at low strain. The first microcracks directly initiate the final failure. Before the final failure, the materials craze at a certain strain. By means of different testing methods these strain values were determined. For practical applications, these values should be considered in the designing of thermoset parts.

Notizen: When rubber is deformed an energy input is involved which is released in part when the rubber returns to its original shape. The part which is not returned as mechanical energy is dissipated as heat. The “rebound resilience” is defined as the ratio of the energy returned to the energy applied for deformation by an indentation due to a single impact. In this experiment, a pendulum mass and a test piece, as long as they are in contact, may be considered an oscillating system having one degree of freedom in which the rubber is a Voigt model. The correlation between rebound resilience and loss angle of the rubber may thus be derived. The measurement of the contact time between pendulum indentor tip and rubber surface, in addition to the rebound resilience, allows calculation of deformation, speed and acceleration of the damped sinusoidal motion. The penetration of the spherical indentor under a constant force depends on Young's modulus. Scott found an empirical relationship among force applied, depth of indentation, radius of the indentor tip and the modulus. This relationship has been recently improved by Stiehler and coworkers, The Stiehler formula has been used here for evaluating the storage modulus of rubber vulcanizates by using the maximum force transmitted by the impacting mass and the indentation depth of the test piece at the same time.

Notizen: A rheological model of solid polymers is proposed. Its mechanical analog is a parallel of a linear spring and a Maxwell element with variable viscosity. The viscosity of the dashpot is allowed to change with stress both directly, by an Eyring-type mechanism, and through free volume changes according to the Doolittle equation. Predictions of the model reproduce many of the features shown, especially after yielding, by constant velocity stress-strain, stress-relaxation and creep data taken at room temperature on biaxially-oriented poly(ethylene terephthalate) over a wide range of loading rates.

Notizen: Shear stress and first normal stress difference data are presented for materials which exhibit a constant viscosity and yet at the same time exhibit elasticity levels of the same order as polymer melts. Flow pattern observations in circular die entry flows in conjunction with independent shear and normal stress measurement strongly suggest that these fluids would make excellent model fluids for melt studies. Studies in which the influence of elasticity in the absence of shear thinning and fluid inertia can easily be made. Furthermore it is clearly shown that a realistic solution to the die entry flow problem is not obtained using second order flow theory. In the second order region the secondary cell is observed to be almost identical in size to the cell observed for an inelastic Newtonian fluid in creeping flow. Marked growth in the secondary cell as a function of elasticity is not observed until the shear rates exceed the region of second order behavior. This growth in cell size as a result of elasticity is followed at higher shear rates by a spiraling flow instability like that observed for some polymer melts.

Notizen: A numerical simulation of ballistic impact and penetration on woven textile panels is described which can easily incorporate a wide variety of realistic constitutive and fracture models. The use of this model in assessing Viscoelastic relaxation effects is illustrated, and is further extended to include non-linear Viscoelastic effects. Since a variety of non-linear models is presently available and there is insufficient evidence to indicate the superiority of any single one in this instance, the Eyring non-linear model was chosen arbitrarily to indicate the ease with which these models may be implemented into the numerical treatment. The results obtained using the non-linear model are compared with comparable computer experiments using linear elastic and linear Viscoelastic models.

Notizen: The fibrous material obtained by drawing or extrusion exhibits a more than linear increase in the axial elastic modulus with draw ratio, a much slower increase in tensile strength and a decrease in strain to break. The reason for such a behavior is found in the existence of structural defects of fibrous material, which is composed of very long and narrow microfibrillar elements. At their ends the axial connection by taut-tie molecules is almost completely interrupted. Hence the transfer of tensile stress through such a defect is only possible by lateral shift of the load to adjacent microfibrils. The incompleteness of this transfer, the excess straining of the material in the defect area, and the relatively easy axial displacement of the ends of microfibrils favor the local formation of microcracks which grow and coalesce with close-by microcracks until a critical size crack is formed and the strained sample fails. The process is favored by a high elastic modulus of microfibrils which is practically identical with that of the drawn or extruded sample. Hence the fibrous polymer fails at lower strain the higher its axial elastic modulus, i.e., the higher the draw ratio.

Notizen: Amorphous homopolymer blends were differentiated from the corresponding random copolymers with wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXRD) using the diffraction angle and the band width at one-half peak maximum. The diffraction angle was also used to determine the composition of copolymers and of mixtures of homopolymers. A procedure has been developed to predict the WAXRD patterns of polyblends and/or random copolymers based on those of the corresponding homopolymers.

Notizen: A theoretical treatment is presented for the prediction of the rate at which a liquid is entrained by a roll which is rotating partially submerged in a Newtonian liquid, and also for the prediction of the variation in the thickness of the film around the roll. The method involves the integration of the momentum equation after neglecting inertia forces in the dynamic meniscus region and the matching of the surface curvature with that derived for the static meniscus region near the liquid surface. The resulting equation allows the prediction of the relationship between a dimensionless film thickness parameter, T, and the capillary number, Ca, as a function of the radius of the roll, the withdrawal angle and the position of the roll periphery. The liquid flux on the roll can also be predicted.

Notizen: Compressive fatigue experiments have been designed to compare this long term mechanical life property with shorter term stress-strain behavior. Fatigue lifetime curves can be represented by three distinct regions. The fatigue failure curves shift to shorter lifetimes and lower stresses as temperature is increased. The results are discussed in terms of the Zhurkov model of static fatigue failure. Using a Coulomb-Navier yield criterion modified rate expression, it is clear that activation energy and activation volume are functions of temperature. A change in temperature dependence of activation energy and endurance limiting stress occurs near the β transition suggesting that this molecular process is related to the fatigue process. The nearly identical dependence of fatigue and stress-strain activation energies and activation volumes with temperature suggest that both deformation processes may be controlled by a similar mechanism, i.e., localized plastic deformation. Utilizing these concepts, a simple model of fatigue allows correlation of the endurance limiting stress and the number of stress cycles at the endurance limiting stress with measures of resistance to plastic flow as determined from stress-strain data for this polystyrene. These data are used to project the longest and shortest mechanical fatigue lifetimes for these deformation conditions.

Notizen: A theoretical and experimental study of heat transfer to polymer melts flowing through circular tubes is presented. The mathematical model provides for shear heating and expansion cooling effects, and also heat of reaction during flow for various wall boundary conditions. Experimental results, obtained using low density polyethylene, show reproducible temperature and velocity profiles. The measured inlet melt temperature profile and the axial wall temperature profile provide the boundary conditions for the calculations. The experimental data confirm the predictions of the magnitude of the shear heating and expansion cooling effects during tube flow.

Notizen: Chopped aramid fiber reinforced ionomer formulations were investigated as prototypes of military armor materials effective in providing protection against munition fragments. The dependence of ballistic impact resistance upon fiber openness was demonstrated by radiographs. Concentrations of 30 percent or less by volume of 1/4 and 1/2 in. fibers were injection moldable, However, the greater than optimum dispersion of fibers as a result of extrusion compounding or of the injection molding itself resulted in lower ballistic resistance and in usually lower tensile and flexural strength properties than were achieved by compression molding: Compression molding of suitably opened 1/4, 1/2 and 2 in. fibers produced rigid materials with fiber contents as high as 90 percent by volume. Ballistic impact resistance increased linearly with fiber content.

Notizen: Materials and conditions required for constant rate absorption of a liquid into a glassy polymer (Case II transport) have been exploited to produce prototype devices for constant rate delivery of a solute, molecularly dispersed within the polymer, to the surrounding liquid environment. Absorption of n-hexane in polystyrene films, containing between one and two percent of Sudan Red IV dye, resulted in constant rate liberation of the colored solute to the surrounding fluid. The rate of dye release was controlled by the constant rate absorption of n-hexane in these dye-containing films. Companion experiments involving microtome sectioning and photomicrographic recording of dye-loaded films, consequent to immersion in n-hexane for various time intervals, revealed that the unpenetrated central core retained the dye originally dispersed within the film sample and, conversely, the swollen outer regions were completely denuded of dye consequent to n-hexane penetration. The constant rate advance of the microscopically observable sharp boundary, between dye-containing and dye-denuded polymer, was quantitatively consistent with the independently determined kinetics of dye accumulation in the supernatant n-hexane. These results indicate that diffusion of invading n-hexane to the relaxing boundary and back diffusion of dye in the previously swollen outer shell are both rapid compared with the rate-determining Case II transport of n-hexane in these dye-containing films. The delivery of Sudan Red IV to the n-hexane was not confounded by an initial burst of solute, typically common to so-called membrane-reservoir controlled delivery devices. Swelling-induced delivery from glassy matrices appears useful, therefore, for the design of monolithic devices for constant rate delivery over the entire course of the delivery cycle. The concept is not limited to monolithic devices; membrane-reservoir devices could be constructed involving a glassy, solute-containing reservoir which could be activated by penetration of invading liquid consequent to placement in a suitable fluid environment. Development of devices, suitable for swelling-controlled release of drugs to target organs, will be based upon glassy, hydrophilic polymeric hosts.

Notizen: In-plane mechanical properties, coefficients of thermal and hygroscopic expansion, and dimensional changes due to stress relaxation were measured as a function of direction in one, three, and five-mil polyimide films. Although these films were made by a casting process, they exhibited significant anisotropy in the properties tested. This anisotropy was apparently due to preferential orientation of the polymer which occurred during the manufacturing process.

Notizen: A summary of the transitional behavior of blends containing poly(vinylidene fluoride), PVF2, and various oxygen-containing polymers is presented. These data are used to establish the presence of a single miscible amorphous phase. The depression of the PVF2 melting point in those blends judged to be miscible is analyzed using standard thermodynamic arguments to determine the heats of mixing between the amorphous diluents and the PVF2. These heats of mixing are exothermic indicating the presence of strong interactions between the binary pairs. A comparison between the observed interaction strengths and the dipole moments of the various diluents suggests that the exothermic heats of mixing are the result of strong dipole-dipole interactions. Nearly all the miscible blends with PVF2 show Lower Critical Solution Temperature (LCST) behavior. The direct correlation between the temperature location of this phase instability and the observed interaction strength suggests that the instability is more the result of enthalpic considerations than entropic ones.

Notizen: The dimensioning of structural parts made of plastics requires the knowledge of the material parameters which depend on the processing and, loading conditions. In this paper, the possibility of describing the stress-, temperature-, and time-dependent deformation behavior of thermoplastics below the linear viscoelastic limit is presented, using simple exponential functions. The formal relationship of the systems of equations have been ascertained based on a large number of experimental results. They enable a mathematical description of the deformation behavior of the material considered with sufficient accuracy for engineering requirements. This is based on parameters for creep experiments with three different stresses, at constant temperature, extending to 102 h. One experimental series extended to 103 h. As shown in examples, based on these experimental results, the computation makes possible a predetermination of the deformations obtained with the time-factors of 102 to 103. The temperature can vary within the nearly linear region of the semi-logarithmic shear modulus-temperature curve. Within the variation of the stress, cyclic changes of the loading can also very simply be taken into account using Boltzmann's superposition principle. Principally, the computation can be carried out using any auxiliary means which contains the exponential function xy. Simple programmable pocket computers allow an automatic calculation.

Notizen: An empirical model suggested earlier by B. H. Bersted predicting the rheological properties of linear polyethylene from the molecular weight distribution is modified to account for the rheological properties in steady shear flow of branched polyethylene as well. The shear dependent viscosity, the steady shear compliance, and extrudate swell could be calculated from the distributions of molecular weight and long-chain branching in good agreement with experimental data for eight commercial low density polyethylenes. Tanner's equation was used to calculated die-swell from the modified Bersted model. The steady shear compliance was found to be related to \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$(\overline {gM} )_z .(\overline {gM} )_{z + 1} /(\overline {gM} )_w^2 .$\end{document}.

Notizen: To further investigate the nature of the specific interaction leading to the miscibility of poly(vinylidene fluoride), PVF2, with certain oxygen containing polymers, blends of PVF2 with poly(ε-caprolactone), PCL, with poly(vinyl methyl ether), PVME, and with poly(vinyl methyl ketone), PVMK, were prepared. PVMK/PVF2 blends were found to be miscible while blends of PVME/PVF2 and PCL/PVF2 were found not to be miscible. These results show that the specific interaction with PVF2 involves mainly the carbonyl group rather than the entire ester group. The relative effectiveness of having this group in the chain or pendant to it is not yet resolved.

Notizen: A basic study is reported of extrusion and injection molding for melts of polyethylene and polystyrene filled with glass fibers. It is shown that glass fibers cause large increases in end pressure losses and decreases in extrudate swell. Flow visualization of injection molding studies indicates that polymer melts containing high loadings of glass fibers exhibit jetting in end gated molds. This is attributed to the reduction in extrudate swell. To avoid jetting, special care is required in design of gating.

Notizen: In this paper the effect of temperature and filler content φ on electrical resistivity of styrene-acrylonitrile polymer filled with iron or aluminium powders has been investigated. The resistivity of such composites decreases suddenly by several orders of magnitude at a critical volume concentration φc, which depends on the size distribution of particles and on thermal history. For filler content lower than φc, the resistivity decreases with increasing temperature, whereas for φ 〉 φc there is a sudden increase in resistivity at temperatures near the glass transition temperature of the polymeric matrix. This effect is more pronounced than the previously reported data on other composite systems.

Notizen: Co-rotating, self-wiping twin-screw equipment has been developed which incorporates fiber glass or fillers into various plastics to form compounds with superior mechanical properties. Fiber glass bundles are folded into the plastic melt in such a fashion that each glass strand is wetted out with minimum breakage of the strand. The intensity of compounding is controlled externally to condition the basic polymer for optimum filler incorporation. The external control permits compounding a wide variety of plastics over a range of throughputs. The degree of mixing can be varied while the machine is in operation. The fiber resin blend passes through an independently controlled extruder for pelletizing with a hot die face cutter. Either air or water quench systems can be used for cooling the pellets. The gentle handling of the fiber resin blend through compounding and extrusion not only minimizes glass breakage, but also minimizes wear on the equipment. Retention of glass fiber length and good strand bonding impart superior properties to the fiber resin product.

Notizen: The effects of long term exposure to dry and humid environments on carbon-epoxy and graphite-epoxy composites have been studied. Filament wound Naval Ordnance Laboratory rings were fabricated in 1965 and were placed in dry, distilled water and sea water for 11 years. Moisture desorption tests were conducted in order to determine the water content of specimens exposed to the water environments, The effect of the history on moisture absorption characteristics was investigated by re-exposure of partially and completely dried specimens to two different environments: distilled water at 60°C and 98% relative humidity at 60°C. The weight gain was measured and diffusion coefficients were calculated. Horizontal shear tests and flexural tests were performed on “wet” specimens (current properties) and on partially and completely dried specimens (residual properties). The shear strength of the carbon-epoxy composites is degraded by the exposure while that of the graphite-epoxy composite is slightly increased. The composite flexural strengths are not degraded by the exposure. These results are discussed in terms of failure modes.

Notizen: Polystyrene powder was compacted in a cylindrical die at constant compaction speed. Compaction was found to be influenced by test temperature, compaction speed and void fraction of the powder bed. The stress reduction behavior of an axial stress σ1 and a radial stress σ2 was observed at constant void fraction after compaction. The stress reduction thus obtained was interpretable by adopting an octahedral normal stress σoct and an octahedral shear stress τoct which were converted from σ1 and σ2. This behavior was attributable to the deformation of polystyrene around contact points and to a sliding mechanism between particles. It was ascertained that the relation between a shear stress τ and a normal stress σ obtained on compaction differed from that obtained in shear by a mechanism involving movement between polystyrene particles.

Notizen: A class of mathematical models for sorption of swelling solvents in glassy polymers is analyzed. The essential features of these models are the explicit consideration of the kinetics of swelling and of the driving force for swelling. It is shown that, even when all other elementary phenomena are modeled in the simplest possible way, all the experimentally observed features of the processes considered are correctly predicted.

Notizen: A method is presented for calculating the pressure drop in a polymer melt flowing through single or packed screens from orifice-rheometer data, screen dimensions and flow rate. A design plot encompassing standard square-woven and twilled-dutch screens greatly simplifies the calculation. The design relationships are based on the assumption that, for the narrow range of shear usually encountered in a screen pack, the flow behavior is adequately represented by the power law. These relationships were developed from theoretical arguments and wide-ranging experimental evidence reported elsewhere (1). Several examples involving screen packs in extrusion service are worked out in detail, The quantitative implications of the screen-pack equations for extruder scale-up are discussed.

Notizen: Data are presented for the longitudinal and radial growth rates of polyethylene fibers grown from high molecular weight solutions using a seeding method in Poiseuille tube flow. Results indicate growth is a two-step process with the first step the formation of very thin untapered filaments ∼25 μm in diameter which grow very rapidly the full length of the capillary tube. The second step involves radial thickening of the filament into a tapered shape, the kinetics of which have been measured. The discussion includes an analysis of the rapid longitudinal growth and a critical comparison to earlier experiments in both Poiseuille and Couette flow. A possible growth mechanism is suggested to explain the high growth rates found in these experiments as well as the unusual growth observed earlier for Couette rotor growth. A discussion of some kinetic data for the radial growth process is also given along with preliminary results which indicate thickening may only occur in flow of extensional kinematics.

Notizen: Ten linear polyethylenes ranging from Mw = 4.9 × 104 to 4.6 × 106 were crystallized in a dilatometer at 0.51 GPa and 242°C and then cooled slowly. Volume vs time data were used to follow the kinetics of the crystallization. The dilatometer data for the isothermal part of the crystallization were fitted to the Avrami equation. The time exponent was independent of molecular weight and the average was n = 2.2. Electron microscopy of fracture surfaces showed that all of the polyethylenes crystallized in extended chain morphology. The crystalline order and maximum extended chain crystallite thickness decreased with increasing molecular weight. The dominant morphological feature of the crystallized high molecular weight samples was a strand-like network superstructure. Attempts to stabilize the hexagonal structure formed in the isothermal part of the crystallization failed, and all specimens had only the usual orthorhombic crystal structure.

Notizen: A quantitative analysis of the deformation of thin spherulitic polyethylene films was undertaken at the microscopic level with the aid of a gold marking technique. The deformation microstructure which developed was further characterized through the use of a gold decoration technique. The microfibrillar morphology was found to agree quite well with Peterlin's model of the microfibril. Changes in the sample morphology as delineated by the gold decoration, support the proposed mechanisms of the transformation of the folded chain spherulitic morphology into the microfibriliar morphology and the subsequent deformation of the microfibrillai structure.

Notizen: The annealing of drawn samples mobilizes the almost fully extended amorphous tie molecules which try to assume the thermodynamically required random conformations. The sample shrinks if annealed with free ends which permits the crystal blocks on different microfibrils and connected by almost fully extended taut tie molecules to move towards the position they had before plastic deformation. Hence the annealed sample has irretrievably lost most of its high axial elastic modulus which in the sample as drawn was caused by the high fraction of taut tie molecules. With fixed ends no shrinkage is possible so that the partial relaxation of interfibrillar taut tie molecules still lets them connect far away blocks. If their fraction is large enough so that in spite of the high surface to volume ratio which drastically depresses the crystallization temperature they can crystallize they do so after cooling to room temperature. The new axial crystalline bridges restore the high elastic modulus of the material before annealing, partially stabilize the sample against shrinkage during a new annealing, but also cause the dead bend effect which is the consequence of the replacement of flexible taut tie molecules in still amorphous conformation by rigid crystalline bridges. The drawing or extrusion at high temperature produces some annealing effects comparable with those of cold drawn material annealed with fixed ends.
