Description: The Apollo guidance and navigation (G&N) equipment test program, the redesign philosophy, and the actual equipment modifications that were used to limit burn rates in an environment of 100 percent oxygen at pressures of 6.2 and 16 psia are described. The major approach was a serious basic review of the real function of the nonmetallic materials of concern. The result of this review was that the materials could be replaced, eliminated, or covered by nonflammable metallic materials. Although several low-flammability nonmetallic materials were investigated, the direct approach of cover, eliminate, or replace generally proved to be quicker and more effective.

Description: Review of a systematic search for practical solutions in the areas of space shuttle cryogenics, flight operations, ground operations, and safety. The insulation of the main-propulsion hydrogen tanks for both booster and orbiter to prevent water condensation is considered, as well as the insulation of the orbiter's orbital cryogen tanks for ground storage. Two approaches to the feeding of cryogens are outlined - namely, an approach depending on a periodic axial force to settle propellants and refill the basket, and a method of continuous feed through a capillary network adjacent to the walls throughout the tank, the latter method being independent of vehicle thrust. The development of reliable cryogen components is discussed, and the results of studies of launch-abort problems, shuttle approach and landing techniques, and the tolerance of ?deconditioned' crew and passengers to shuttle reentry g-loads are cited.

Description: Discussion of a few novel problems raised by the design and flight plan of the space shuttle and by the dangerous cargos it might carry. Among the problems cited are those connected with the inspection of the bearings of the propellant turbopumps, particularly those of the hydrogen pump, for evidence of spalling, as well as problems arising in the inspection of the high-temperature parts of the combustor and turbine section of the airbreathing turbofan for shuttle booster and orbiter, and problems resulting from the possibility of fire hazard due to spontaneous ignition of fuel vapor in the fuel tank vapor space.

Description: The Apollo 13 incident and subsequent oxygen tank redesign for Apollo 14 placed unique requirements on the flight support activity. A major part of this activity was the integration of the various analytical efforts into a single team function. Additionally, the first flight of the redesigned system without an orbital test required an extensive analytical base. The support team philosophy, objectives, and organization are presented. Various analytical tools that were used during the flight are discussed. Investigations made during the postflight period are considered and their impact upon subsequent flights shown.

Description: Preparation for the Mariner Mars 1971 mission is reported, including an extensive training program for operations personnel during which the primary source of spacecraft data was a computer program simulating the spacecraft. The objectives of a simulation model for training purposes differed from objectives appropriate to a design or analysis model. Model subsystems were designed to provide realistic telemetry data reflecting changes due both to commands and environmental parameters affecting the spacecraft at various times during the mission. The spacecraft is modeled along two separate functional lines. Boolean operations are concentrated in the spacecraft logic model, which determines the spacecraft state or mode, while mathematical operations or algorithms are executed in computational subsystem models. Although logic parameters are interrogated as a part of each computational pass, actual logic model processing occurs only when a change-of-state input is generated by the operations organization. The program design, some of the special characteristics of each of the modeled subsystems, and how the model was used in support of mission operations training are presented.

Description: A computer program has been developed and demonstrated that can analyze the response of space shuttle to atmospheric turbulence. The method developed accounts for propellant slosh, gimballed engine, and stability augmentation system (SAS) coupling with the elastic vehicle. Statistical outputs are generated that relate vehicle loads and accelerations to level of random turbulence. For discrete turbulence descriptions, response time-histories are computed. Preliminary turbulence response analyses of space shuttle were conducted for one ascent and one booster flyback subsonic flight condition. The ascent case considered both symmetric and antisymmetric boundary conditions, while only the symmetric analysis was conducted for booster flyback. The three conditions were analyzed with SAS active and inactive, but apparent instabilities with SAS active (arising from improper gains) invalidated the results. Load and acceleration responses in all cases, however, were well within vehicle design limits.

Description: The Disaster Warning Satellite System is described. It will provide NOAA with an independent, mass communication system for the purpose of warning the public of impending disaster and issuing bulletins for corrective action to protect lives and property. The system consists of three major segments. The first segment is the network of state or regional offices that communicate with the central ground station; the second segment is the satellite that relays information from ground stations to home receivers; the third segment is composed of the home receivers that receive information from the satellite and provide an audio output to the public. The ground stations required in this system are linked together by two, separate, voice bandwidth communication channels on the Disaster Warning Satellites so that a communications link would be available in the event of disruption of land line service.

Description: The payloads for NASA and non-NASA missions of the integrated fleet are analyzed to generate payload data for the capture and cost analyses for the period 1979 to 1990. Most of the effort is on earth satellites, probes, and planetary missions because of the space shuttle's ability to retrieve payloads for repair, overhaul, and maintenance. Four types of payloads are considered: current expendable payload; current reusable payload; low cost expendable payload, (satellite to be used with expendable launch vehicles); and low cost reusable payload (satellite to be used with the space shuttle/space tug system). Payload weight analysis, structural sizing analysis, and the influence of mean mission duration on program cost are also discussed. The payload data were computerized, and printouts of the data for payloads for each program or mission are included.

Description: In the initial magnetic tests the spacecraft perm moment as received was 43 milliampere-meter squared (pole-cm), which was reduced by deperm treatment to milliampere-meter squared. Facility fluxgate probe bias results indicated Z axis bias at the SSS-A fluxgate magnetometer position to be about one half nanotesla (gamma) after Z axis deperm. The ASCS magnetometers, 01 and 02, were successfully aligned and proper operation of the ASCS system were verified. The spacecraft fluxgate magnetometer was calibrated in both the high and low sensitivity modes after a defective 01 electronics card was replaced. Problems were encountered in the Z axis search coil during calibration and the test was re-scheduled. Final test results indicated that the total perm moment could not be reduced any lower than 35 milliampere-meter squared by deperm treatment. However, the Z axis moment decreased from 22 milliampere-meter squared to 6 milliampere-meter squared after deperm. Correct operation and calibration was verified for all three axes of the spacecraft fluxgate magnetometer and no significant bias was observed during stray field testing. Null and spot calibration of the ASCS magnetometer was completed and the measured spin and attitude coil moments were: 2535 and 9820 milliampere-meter squared respectively.

Description: A comparison was made between the methods of access utilized, or proposed, by the military, commercial airlines, and the space shuttle Phase B contractors. The methodology was subjected to consideration for space shuttle use and similarity to current space shuttle access concepts. The Phase B contractor concepts were in turn examined for degree of use of the state-of-the-art and progressive extension of new cost-effective ideas. This comparison disclosed a need for better definition of the criteria/requirements for space shuttle access equipment. Preliminary criteria, needed prior to initiation of the detail design (Phase C/D effort) of ground hardware for the operational site, are presented.

Description: The impulsive transfer of minimum characteristic velocity between two given hyperbolic asymptotes associated with a real planet is considered. The constraint of remaining above the surface of the planet introduces a maximum natural turn angle. This divides the problem naively into two categories. The first is the case when the turn angle required by the given asymptotes is less than or equal to the maximum natural turn angle. This is the more reasonable situation for a swingby maneuver, and is the case considered in this paper. The resulting optimal transfers are of five basic types. In boundary conditions space, by far the largest area of transfers are either single impulse transfers or transfers through the parabolic level requiring two finite impulses. In no case has an optimal transfer been found which uses more than two finite impulses and three infinitesimal impulses. Complete results are presented for the case in which the given turn angle is less than or equal to the maximum natural turn angle.

Description: An experimental program to determine the power-on aerodynamic flight characteristics of the booster and orbiter vehicles during the abort separation maneuver is reported. An essential contribution to such a test program is the gas dynamic simulation of the size and shape of the plumes emitting from the full-scale orbiter and booster main propulsion systems. The two major effects of the plume which must be simulated are: the interaction of the plume with the external flow field, and the direct impingement of the plumes on surfaces which are enveloped by the plume. To accomplish the objective of correct plume simulation, the similarity parameters developed by Herron and the requirement to match momentum flux per unit area between the model and the full-scale systems, were applied to the orbiter and booster propulsion systems.
