    Description: The condensation pressure of air was determined over the range of temperature from 60 to 85 K. The experimental results were slightly higher than the calculated values based on the ideal solution law. Heat of vaporization of oxygen was determined at four temperatures ranging from about 68 to 91 K and of nitrogen similarly at four temperatures ranging from 62 to 78 K.

    Description: The heat requirements for the icing protection of two radome configurations have been studied over a range of design icing conditions. Both the protection limits of a typical thermal protection system and the relative effects of the various icing variables have been determined. For full evaporation of all impinging water, an effective heat density of 14 watts per square inch was required. When a combination of the evaporation and running wet surface systems was employed, a heat requirement of 5 watts per square inch provided protection at severe icing and operating conditions.

    Description: The trajectories of droplets in the air flowing past NACA 65(1)-208 airfoil and an NACA 65(1)-212 airfoil, both at an angle of attack of 4 degrees, were determined. The amount of water in droplet form impinging on the airfoils, the area of droplet impingement, and the rate of droplet impingement per unit area on the airfoil surface affected were calculated from the trajectories and are presented. The amount, extent, and rate of impingement of the NACA 65(1)-208 airfoil are compared with the results for the NACA 65(1)1-212 airfoil. Under similar conditions of operation, the NACA 65(1)-208 airfoil collects less water than the NACA 65(1)-212 airfoil. The extent of impingement on the upper surface of the NACA 65(1)-208 airfoil is much less than on the upper surface of the NACA 65(1)-212 airfoil, but on the lower surface the extents of impingement are about the same.

    Description: The present status of available information relative to the prediction of shock-induced boundary-layer separation is discussed. Experimental results showing the effects of Reynolds number and Mach number on the separation of both laminar and turbulent boundary layer are given and compared with available methods for predicting separation. The flow phenomena associated with separation caused by forward-facing steps, wedges, and incident shock waves are discussed. Applications of the flat-plate data to problems of separation on spoilers, diffusers, and scoop inlets are indicated for turbulent boundary layers.

    Description / Table of Contents: Metals and TissueThe behaviour of metals when embedded in human tissue and their decomposition by body fluids is examined from the standpoint of the surgen. There is a great demand for metals capable of withstanding corrosion which are at the same time, suitable for use in the human body as supports for injured parts as substitutes for damaged joints. The present shortage of suitable material for this purpose is emphasised by words and pictures. Substitutes for metals (Plexiglas, Paladon etc.,) are touched upon, although these substance are not yet fully capable of taking the place of metals. Tantalum, which has been greatly praised abord, is worthy of serious attention. It is kindly to human tissue, easily formed and worked, is not attacked by body fluids, but, unfortunately, is still extremely expensive in Germany. This metals is now being used experimentally in one or two of the Medical School of German universities.
    Notes: Das Schicksal von Metallen im menschlichen Gewebe, seine Auseinandersetzung mit den Körpersäften wird von Standpunkt des Chirurgen aus beleuchtet. Es besteht ein großer Bedarf seitens der Medizin an korrosionsbeständigen Metallen, die in den Körper entweder als Stütze verlorengegangener Stabilität oder als Ersatz für zerstörte Gelenke gebraucht werden. Die heute noch bestehenden Mängel des Materials werden in Bild und Wort besonders in den Vordergrund gestellt. Es wird auf Ersatzstoffe für Metalle eingegangen (Plexiglas, paladon), die aber auch noch nicht in vollen Maße an die Stelle des Metalls treten können. Unsere Aufmerksamkeit verdient Tantal, das im Ausland sehr gelobt wird. Es ist sehr gewebsfreundlich, gut formbar, wird nicht von Körpersäften angegriffen, ist aber in Deutschland sehr teuer. Dieses Metall wird zur Zeit in einigen deutschen Universitätskliniken ausprobiert.

    Description / Table of Contents: Modification in Corrosion Effects through the use of Anti-Wetting Agent IV and its protective Effect against Acid ActionEarlier investigations have shown that the addition of a suitable anti-wetting agent to domestic water supplies would not only prevent pitting, but would also counteract practically any form of corrosive action on the material. The chemical constitution of the surface-active substance is of great importance, since many compounds substantially increase the corrosive action.It has now been determined that the action of dilute hydrochloric acid on steel can be appreciably reduced by the addition of a suitable antiwetting agent. even 0,4%in a solution of 22g HCL in 1,000ccm water has a strong inhibitory of 1% guarantees protection of the steel.
    Notes: Frühere Untersuchungen haben gezeigt, daß in Leitungswasser geeignete Netzmittel nicht nur Lochkorrosion von Flußstahl, sondern auch praktisch jeden Angriff auf den Werkstoff verhindern können. Die chemische Konstitution des oberflächenaktiven Stoffes ist dabei entscheidend, da manche Verbindungen die Korrosion beträchtlich verstärken.Es wurde nun festgestellt, daß auch der Angriff verdünnter Salzsäure auf Stahl durch Zusatz eines geeigneten Netzmittels erheblich vermindert werden kann. 0,4%in einer Lösung von 22g HCL in 1000cm3 Wasser haben bereits eine stark inhibierende Wirkung, und die Anwesenheit von 1% gewährleistet einen bemerkenswerten Schutz des Stabes.

    Description / Table of Contents: The Action of Fluxes in Galvanising Baths, when using Aluminium Alloyed AgentsIn baths using aluminium alloyed galvanising media, the zinc chloride in the flux is converted to volatile aluminium chloride, so that no flux will retain its original composition in such baths. The galvanising agent is thereby robbed of its aluminium, so that, up to the present, the flux had to be applied to the surface of the articles to be treated. Tests made with additions of sodium - aluminium fluoride have shown that, with the aluminium content necessary for dry galvanising, even when aluminium fluoride is added, no flux can be retained on the upper surface of the bath for any length of time.
    Notes: In aluminiumlegierten Verzinkbädern setzt sich das Zinkchlorid des Flußmittels zu flüchtigem Aluminiumchlorid um, so daß sich auf diesen Bädern kein Fluß hält. Die Bäder verarmen aur diese Weise an Aluminium, so daß bisher das Flußmittel auf die Warenoberfläche aufgebracht werden mußte. Versuche mit Zugabe von Natriumaluminiumfluorid haben ergeben, daß bei den Aluminiumgehalten wie sie für das Trockenverzinken notwendig sind, auch bei Zugabe von Aluminiumfluorid kein auf der Badoberfläche dauernd beständiger Fluß gehalten werden kann.

    Description / Table of Contents: Artifical Resins and Body TissuesThe article opens with a brief description of the irritational effects (corrosion, electrolysis, etc.), of metals entering and remaining in the human body, either, as a result of surgical treatment or accidently. The cause and effect of the irritation set up by foreign bodies is then discussed.It has been found that, in actual practice, there are artifical resins which have no effect upon human tissue. They must be chemically stable, cause no irritation of a mechanical nature and must have the physical properties of an insulator.When artifical resins are required to function statically in the human body, certain peculiar difficulties arise, which are due to the physical and chemical properties of the resin. These difficulties are described in detail.It is fact that artifical resin manufactures have not yet been able to produce a resin of a “universal” nature, which can be used as a statically functioning substitute for bones and bony structures.At the moment it would appear possible for manufacturers to produces an artifical resin which has no irritational effects and yet has no irritational mechanical strength.
    Notes: Nachdem die Metalle, welche operativ oder aus Zufall in den Körper gelangen und dort verbleiben, in der Möglichkeit ihrer Gewebereizwirkung (Korrosion, Elektrolyse) kurz behandelt wurden, wird auf die Ursache und die Wirkung der Fremdkörperreize eingegangen.Es hat sich in der Praxis bestätigt, daß es Kunstharze gibt, die keine Gewebereize ausüben. Sie müssen physikalisch einen Isolator darstellen, chemisch stabil und mechanisch reizlos sein.Bei der Übernahme statischer Funktionen innerhalb des Körpers treten bei Kunstharzen durch die ihnen eigentümlichen Eigenschaften Schwierigkeiten auf, auf welche näher eingegangen wird.Es zeigt sich, daß die relative junge Kunstharzindustrie noch kein Universalmaterial schaffen konnte, welches in allen Fällen geeignet ist, statisch funktionstüchtig als Knochenersatz verwendet zu werden.Für die Zukunft erscheint es glaubhaft, daß Kunstharze durch die Industrie erstellt werden können, die sowohl reizlos sind, wie auch in ihrer Festigkeit ausreichend sein dürften.

    Description / Table of Contents: Corrosion Problems in Fire EngineeringA short survey of the equipment and appliances now used in presentday Fire Engineering and Extinguishment is followed by details of the materials of construction and the corrosive action to which they may be subjected, such as extinguishing agents, antifreezing compounds and expelling agents. A number of typical, everyday corrosion problems are then stated and the causes of the corrosion explained. The article closes with references to the possibilities of applying anticorrosive measures.
    Notes: Nach einem kurzen Überblick über die im Feuerlöschwesen heute gebräuchlichen Handapparate, fahrbaren Geräten und stationären Anlagen werden die verwendeten Werkstoffe und aggressiven Medien, wie Feuerlöschmittel, Frostschutzmittel und Treibmittel kurz gekennzeichnet. Dann werden eine Anzahl charakteristischer Korrosionsprobleme aus der Praxis beschrieben; die Ursachen der Korrosionsentstehung werden aufgezeigt. Ein Hinweis auf die Korrosionsschurtzmöglichkeiten beschließt die Arbeit.

    Description / Table of Contents: Acid-resistant CementsAfter some introductory remarks of a historical nature, followed by certain basic definitions, the author discuss silicate cements. These latter are made of water-glass and various fillers, wherby a good strength is obtained. The acid-resistant cements, mortars and putties are then discussed. Hoechst acid-resistant mortar, Keralith. Asplit Kera, Keranol, Kerasolith, etc., Haveg, prodorit and other artificial resin and bitumen cements belong to this class, and are described individually by the author. The article concludes with a description nof sundry other acid-resistant building materials which are known in the trade as phenol cements, Sulphur cements, etc. Cement mixtures and asbestos cements as acid-resistant coatings for cement or concrete foundations are discussed as far as required. The greatest attention should be paid to the various methods employed for testing cement, whereby many difficulties can be avoided.
    Notes: Nach einigen geschichtlichen Ausführungen und notwendigen Begriffsbestimmungen werden zunächst die Silikatzemente besprochen, die aus Wasserglas und Füllstoffen aufgebaut werden, wobei recht erhebliche Festigkeiten erreicht werden können. Sie leiten über zu den Säuremörtel Hoechst, Keralith, Asplit, Kera Keranol, Kerasolitih oder dgl., Haveg, Prodorit und andere Kunstharz- bzw. Bitumenzemente sowie Asphaltmassen gehören, die im einzelnen behandelt werden. Den Abschluß für bilden die sonstigen Säurebaustoffe, für die sich die Bezeichnungen Phenolzemente, Schwefelzemente usw. eingeführt haben. Misch- bzw. Asbestzemente und säurefeste Bekleidungen auf Zement- bzw. Betongrundlage werden, soweit notwendig, gewürdigt. Den Prüfmethoden ist stärkste Beachtung zu schenken, um vor Schwierigkeiten geschützt zu sein.

    Description / Table of Contents: The influence of the External and Electrolytic Resistances on the Functioning of Electrochemical model ElementsThe manner in which the resistances of the external circuit and of the electrolytes influence the potential of the cathode, terminal voltage, etc., are described. The article concludes with a description of a method of plotting current - voltage curves in electrolytes of low a variation in the conductivity. Attention is also drawn to a variation in the conditions necessary to obtain a correct ratio between the current and the substance whose identity is to be determined, which causes the arrangement of the elements to be independent of the salt content of the solution.
    Notes: Es wird dargestellt, wie die Widerstände im äußeren Stromkreis und im Elektrolyten die Potentiallage der Kathode, die Klemmspannung und ähnliche Größen beeinflusst. Abschließend wird ein Weg zur Aufnahme von Strom-Spannungskurven in Elektrolyten mit geringer Leitfähigkeit gegeben und auf eine Variation der Bedingungen zur Erzielung von Porportionalität zwischen Strom und zu bestimmenden Stoff hingewiesen, die die Elementanordnung gleichzeitig in weitem Maße von dem Salzgehalt der Lösung unabhängig macht.
