Description: This list is the first result of my researches in literature and in different museums. Dr. KIDSTON looked over the many photographs and notes made for this purpose and in writing the text of our Monograph of the Calamites of Western Europe we found the occasion to controlize the conclusions. The comparison with the numerous beautiful specimens in Dr. KIDSTON’S collection and the many conferences we had on the critical figures and specimens lead to the result given in this list. I am glad to have in the publication of this list another opportunity to offer my sincere thanks to Dr. KIDSTON for his collaboration and for so many kind helps. This list contains the names used for species of the genus Calamites sensu ampliss. (incl. Arthropitys, Calamodendron etc.). From species not occuring in palaeozoic deposits, it brings the names only and no further critical remarks.

Description: The Mollusca enumerated in this paper, have been collected by Dr. L. F. de Beaufort during his stay in our colonies; the majority is from Waigeu. No new species have been named, as the few specimens which are probably new, are in young or in poor condition, but some varietal names have been applied to forms which differ from the types by shape, or which, as for instance in Xesta aulica Pfr. have not been designed by names, as has been done for X. citrina Lin. many years ago, by E. von Martens. I have to thank Mr. G. K. Gude for assistance in naming some doubtful specimens and a few other authorities for the same or for loan of specimens. The few marine species have no special interest.

Two remarkable species viz. Lepidasthenia sibogae and Eulepis malayana, besides three species of Psammolyce are already mentioned before 3); in the present paper we wish to confine ourselves to the subfamily of the Polyno\xc3\xafnae. Only six representatives of this group hitherto are mentioned from Amboina, Borneo, Ceram and Ternate, viz. The great multiplication of genera, nearly all of them founded upon variable, non-essential, or even accidental characters, and none of them clearly and fully defined, has been a serious drawback to the study of these interesting forms 5)." Also Darboux in his elaborate paper \xe2\x80\x9eRecherches sur les Aphroditiens" 6), has not succeeded to give a clear definition of the different genera and it is not unusual to see the

Description: Though not laying any claim to being considered a pioneer in this systematic treatise on the genus Macrophthalmus, a thorough account of which has been given by Ortmann in 1897, I hope a renewed investigation may be not unwelcome to carcinologists. The discrimination of the species of this genus, notwithstanding they are easily to be grouped around certain well-characterized forms, remains a troublesome task. As far as I know Ortmann (Zool. Jahrb. Abt. Syst., Bnd. 10, 1897, p. 340\xe2\x80\x94342) was the first to give an analytical key of the species then known. Several authors, among whom we may name Miss Rathbun, Nobili, Stimpson and Laurie, have since described new species or cleared several yet undecided questions about imperfectly known forms, but it is especially to the accomplished carcinologist de Man that we owe the most important contributions to our knowledge in this respect and the minutest descriptions. 1) The rather rich collection of Macrophthalmus in the Leiden Museum has induced me to give a new account of it, taking as base Ortmann\'s revision of 1897. I much regret, that the terrible war that actually is devastating most of the civilized countries of Europe, has prevented me from getting informations about doubtful species, as it is impossible now to get access to type-specimens preserved in Museums of warfaring countries. 2) So I had to restrict myself almost entirely to the material of the Leiden Museum and it has been impossible to fill all the gaps left open by Ortmann.\nThe number of names used for species of the genus under discussion is rather large. I give here a full list of the names that have come to my knowledge, alphabetically arranged, with reference to the first paper

Unfortunately they are somewhat incomplete, for the elytra as well as most of the cirri are absent. One of the specimens, a female containing ripe eggs, measures nearly 20 mm. in length and has about 40 segments. The head is rounded, broader as long, prolonged anteriorly into the two stout basal joints of the lateral antennae, that are nearly as long as the head, whereas their distal part is only a trifle longer; the species therefore belongs to the group of Lepidonotidae 1). From the middle of the head a large basal joint of the tentacle arises, but its distal part is absent. The palps are stumpy, conical. No eyes are visible. Each segment bears a papilliform tubercle in the middle of the dorsum; this series in combination with the longitudinal rows of dorsal tubercles, elytrophores, cirriphores and notopodia gives the

The Leiden Museum of Natural History has received a gigantic Hepialid, sent over by Mr. P. O. Stolz from Soerian (distr. Alahan Pandjang, W. Sum.). As far as I can find in literature, it was till now unknown that in Sumatra such insects are living. In the East-Indian Archipelago Hepialidae are known from Borneo, Java and Amboina, from the Aroe islands and from New-Guinea. Java is inhabited by representatives of three genera: Palpifer Hamps., Hepialiscus Hamps. and Phassus Moore. Their species are not numerous. Mr. P. C. T. Snellen recorded in the \xe2\x80\x9eTijdschrift voor Entomologie", vol. XLIII, pp. 29\xe2\x80\x9433 the following species: Palpifer sordida Snell., Hepialiscus marcidus Butl., Phassus damor Moore and Phassus signifer Walk. From Borneo is only known Phassus signifer Walk.; from Amboina are recorded Hepialus rosatus Pag. and Hepialus tegulatus Pag. On the Aroe islands Casana trichiloides Walk, has been captured. No sooner had we come into New-Guinea, than the number of the Hepialidae begins to rise, till we have reached the Australian regions, where the maximum of species is to be found. These communications are drawn from the \xe2\x80\x9eLepidopterorum Catalogus" by Aurivillius and Wagner, part 4, 1911.\nReturning to the Hepialidae from Sumatra I must mention moreover two specimens of Phassus damor Moore in the collection of Messrs. Piepers and Snellen. For the determination of these species I have used: List Spec. Lep. Ins. Coll. Brit. Mus. by F. Walker, 1856; Cat. Lep.\nIns. Mus. E. I. C. by Th. Horsfield and Moore, 1858\xe2\x80\x941859; Faun. Brit.\nInd. by G. F. Hampson, 1892, and the above cited memoir by Mr.\nSnellen. Judging from these works the specimen collected by Mr. Stolz

Description: Messrs. Henry J. Elwes and James Edwards have carefully studied the species of the genus Ypthima and have published the important results of their researches in the Transactions of the Entomological Society of London, 1893, part I, pp. 1\xe2\x80\x9454. The limited acquaintance with the Dutch language and the want of sufficient Javanese material have prevented the above named authors from doing justice to the species, described by the late Mr. P. C. T. Snellen in the \xe2\x80\x9eTijdschrift voor Entomologie", XXXV, pp. 133 and 135. In recent years, 1910 and 1913, Messrs. H. Fruhstorfer and M. C. Piepers have maked a more particular study of the Indo-Australian and Javanese species of Ypthima. The results of Mr. Fruhstorfer\'s researches are published in the work of Prof. A. Seitz, and those of Mr. Piepers\' in \xe2\x80\x9eThe Rhopalocera of Java".\nThe latter has not examined the anatomical characters and has separated the Javanese species, just as Mr. Snellen did, by the outward morphological characters only. The work of Messrs. Elwes and Edwards has undoubtfully shown to us the great systematic value of the modification of the male genitalia. Arranging the large number of Javanese Ypthimaspecimens in the collection of the Leiden Museum of Natural History, I have taken the fortune at the tide to examine the male genitalia of the species not examined by Messrs. Elwes and Edwards, and to compare the descriptions in the four named publications.\nYpth. fasciata Hew.\nHewitson, Trans. Ent. Description: Among the collection of birdskins brought home by the third expedition to Mount Wilhelmina in the Snow Mountains of New Guinea there are some specimens, males and females, of a bird of paradise, much resembling Falcinellus meyeri (Finsch) from South-east New Guinea, but differing in some points. They likely are representatives of a western form of the above-named species, inhabiting the high mountains of the central part of Netherlands\' New Guinea. I name this form: Falcinellus meyeri albicans nov. subsp.\nThe adult male is similar to that of meyeri, the long feathers of the flanks however are white and not pale yellowish brown; the breast is more pure olive, with less brown tinge. The female much resembles that of meyeri, but the colour of the back, upper tailcoverts and tailfeathers is olive-brown, without rufous tinge.\nTypes, \xe2\x99\x82 \xe2\x99\x80, Treubbivak (2366 m.) on the Treub Mountains, January 30, 1913 and March 8, 1913. G. Versteeg leg., Nos 497 and 630.\nThe expedition has collected near Bijenkorfbivak, on the southern slope of the Hellwig Mountains at an elevation of \xc2\xb1 1750 m., a fine series of the black form of Falcinellus striatus (Boddaert), described by Mr. Rothschild from Mount Goliath (5000 feet) under the name of Falcinellus striatus atratus (Ibis, 1912, p. 110). Mr. Rothschild is right in treating this bird as a subspecies of striatus, but this is not the case with meyeri, as he has done in a paper in the Ibis of 1911, p. 350.\nThe females of striatus and atratus are easily distinguished from the females of meyeri and albicans by the coloration of the quills, the rufous colour of the outer webs of the primaries and of the inner webs of the
