    Description: With forty-two extensively annotated maps, this atlas offers novel insights into the history and mechanics of how Central Europe’s languages have been made, unmade, and deployed for political action. The innovative combination of linguistics, history, and cartography makes a wealth of hard-to-reach knowledge readily available to both specialist and general readers. It combines information on languages, dialects, alphabets, religions, mass violence, or migrations over an extended period of time. The story first focuses on Central Europe’s dialect continua, the emergence of states, and the spread of writing technology from the tenth century onward. Most maps concentrate on the last two centuries. The main storyline opens with the emergence of the Western European concept of the nation, in accord with which the ethnolinguistic nation-states of Italy and Germany were founded. In the Central European view, a “proper” nation is none other than the speech community of a single language. The Atlas aspires to help users make the intellectual leap of perceiving languages as products of human history and part of culture. Like states, nations, universities, towns, associations, art, beauty, religions, injustice, or atheism—languages are artefacts invented and shaped by individuals and their groups.

    Description: Henri Hours' book on the end of the League in Lyon is one of the most important works of 16th century historiography in Lyon, although very few readers have had the opportunity to consult it. This is its main paradox and the challenge of this edition. The thesis was defended at the École Nationale des Chartes in 1951, but it has never been published and, in accordance with the rules of the École, it has never been made available. Only those who knew the author were able to read it, which does not prevent it from appearing in all bibliographies concerning the Wars of Religion. Following his death in 2017 and with the agreement of his family, the Collection Chrétiens & Sociétés has decided to publish this memoir for the first time in order to make it accessible to the public in Lyon and to historians of religious confrontations. Henri Hours meticulously analysed the last years of the League at Lyon, the crucial years 1593-1597. Since 1589, the city had swayed to the side of Catholic intransigence to the point of rejecting its sovereign, Henry IV, and maintaining a costly but necessary war effort in a region crossed by denominational borders. The bishop, Pierre d'Epinac, the consuls of Lyon, the governor of the city, the Savoyard and Spanish spies, but also the street preachers and the little people who were very inclined to be alarmed, were the main actors in these events. Here we touch on the political and religious dimensions of urban history. Through municipal deliberations, correspondence, pamphleteering and some contemporary accounts, Henri Hours unravels the skein of the city's political shift towards submission to the king. By looking back at the writings of some of these actors, notably Pierre Mathieu and Claude de Rubys, he also questions the memory of the event in the consciousness of Lyon.

    Description: Les auteurs de cet ouvrage “ Pierre et Archéologie ”, issu du Colloque international qui s’est tenu à Tautavel (14-15 mai 1998) veulent attirer l’attention sur les nombreux aspects de l’utilisation de la pierre par l’Homme depuis la Préhistoire, et les difficultés pour comprendre et expliquer son identification, son évolution et sa conservation. Mise à part l’utilisation lointaine de la pierre par l’homme préhistorique pour assurer sa survie, il reste le domaine très vaste, plus récent dans le temps, de la pierre de taille utilisée par les hommes. Déjà les gallo-romains se sont servis des pierres dites « du midi » pour des constructions que nous connaissons bien. Mais la pierre n’est pas réservée seulement aux monuments, elle fait partie de la vie quotidienne. En dehors des grands édifices, de nombreuses habitations sont bâties en pierre et souvent leur sol est pavé de pierres. Il y a aussi l’amour de la pierre tout simplement, pour le beau, le toucher : c’est par exemple la sculpture qui agrémente les monuments et même les habitations. Les sarcophages en marbre blanc, sculptés entre la fin de l’Antiquité classique et le Haut Moyen-Age, dont le problème de l’origine est traité dans cet ouvrage, montrent bien la diversité des aspects artistiques que l’Homme a su exploiter. L’ensemble des contributions présentées apporte des données originales sur les méthodes et techniques modernes utilisées pour contribuer à mieux comprendre l’évolution culturelle et artistique de l’humanité, le devenir de la pierre extraite et la restauration des monuments. Ceci montre une fois de plus la nécessité d’une recherche pluridisciplinaire, seule démarche pour assurer la protection et la pérennité de tout ce qui touche notre patrimoine.

    Description: In recent years, through novels and television series ("Vikings", "Millennium", "Borgen" or "Occupied"), Nordic culture has become more visible internationally. At the same time, researchers are questioning what the North is, its conceptualisation, its cultural implications, its geographical characteristics, its social and political challenges. This volume is part of the current debate on the Nordic imaginary based on a notion, Nordicity, which intersects with borealism. Plural and mobile, the North inspires both scriptural and figurative production based on desire, dream, fascination or fantasy. The real, tangible and contingent North is only the apparent surface of a manufactured and invented North. How can we express northernness today? Is a theory of the North possible? This volume attempts to answer these questions by bringing together contributions from researchers in Nordic studies, literature, linguistics and the humanities: each is given the opportunity to define his own conception of Nordicity. Ces dernières années, à travers romans et sériés télévisées ("Vikings", "Millennium", "Borgen" ou "Occupied"), la culture nordique a gagné en visibilité internationale. Simultanément, les chercheurs s'interrogent sur ce qu’est le Nord, sa conceptualisation, ses implications culturelles, ses caractéristiques géographiques, ses enjeux sociaux et politiques. Ce volume s’insère dans le débat actuel sur l’imaginaire nordique à partir d’une notion – la nordicité – qui interagit tout particulièrement avec le boréalisme. Pluriel et mouvant, moteur constant de redéfinitions, le Nord inspire une fabrication tant scripturale que figurale fondée sur le désir, le rêve, la fascination ou le fantasme. Le Nord réel, tangible contingent, n’est que la surface apparente d’un Nord fabriqué et inventé. Comment dire aujourd’hui la nordicité? Une théorie du Nord est-elle possible?     Description: Vulcano, Sicily 1964. After a meeting with him in Cortona, Helle Busacca, a poet and writer from Messina, began drafting an epistolary diary dedicated to Corrado Pavolini, a well-known intellectual and film director of Tuscan origins with whom she had been in love for over twenty years. Through the so far unpublished pages she dedicated to “una storia senza storia” (“a story without history"), the writer brings to life an incandescent theatre of the self, in which the dramatization of personal experience, the self-representative elaboration and the expression of a living and restless inner self combine in a mixture of strongly hybrid characters, which is conveyed by a disruptive communicative force. As the desperately pursued interlocutor becomes increasingly evanescent and unreachable, the voice of a modern tragic heroine emerges unmistakably between claim and confession.

    Description: In light of the dramatic events which have been shocking Ukraine since November 2013, this work’s itinerary aims at functioning as a basis for the formulation of new contact points, for a dialogue between traditions and cultures which nowadays are again being shaken by the events of history. The author examines the self-identification paths of the literary phenomenon of Russian language in Ukraine. This issue of the subseries “Blokovskii sbornik” continues the series of studies started by Zara Mints in 1964. The majority of works from Section I of the book, “The Art of А. Blok in the Context of 19th–20th Century Literature,” is devoted to the study of the poet’s works, his perceptions of preceding writers’ works, and his biographical and artistic contacts with contemporaries. The articles in Section II, “Silver Age Literature: Creative and Social Strategies,” are mainly focused on artistic works and essays of modernist literati contemporary to Blok or to some extent resonating with his poetry and artistic worldview.

Now, through 1,900 letters from friends and readers, Francesca Nencioni offers a different and more ample overview of the fundamental stages in the life and works of the writer, focusing above all on the years of his university training in Pisa. Of particular interest is the appendix of carefully annotated unpublished texts, which offers 19 letters from Dessí to friends and scholars, the complete two-way correspondence with Walter Binni, and the letters sent to the friend and disciple of the great historian, Delio Cantimori.     Description: Le secret est le “personnage théorique” de ce volume collectif qui essaye de penser les figures particulières que la Modernité lui a inventées. Il ne s’agit donc pas de décrire des structures hors de toute histoire mais de chercher en quoi le secret est intimement lié à une économie nouvelle du langage, à des formes littéraires nouvelles. Car la Modernité a produit une exigence de tout dire qui change radicalement le partage entre dicible et indicible. Journal intime ou roman sont, notamment, deux matrices fécondes d’écriture du secret et leur floraison est, d’une certaine façon, l’histoire de la modernité. On déclinera donc quelques figures narratives du secret, en racontant le “roman du secret”. De Madame de Duras à Huysmans, Proust et Bernanos, de Blanchot à Quignard, ou chez Carrère et Both, le principe même du romanesque réside dans les modalités indéfinies de révélation du secret, ce secret qui se réserve, qui nous fait lire. Par contraste, la poésie choisit le versant du mystère. On en verra chez Maeterlinck, Artaud, Pessoa ou Michaux les modes de figuration, et ce qui fait du lyrisme une science de l’ineffable. Les figures du secret sont infinies, chatoyantes et séduisantes. Les énigmatiques jeunes filles de Balthus nous rappellent la place du visible et les réflexions de Wittgenstein ouvrent à une redéfinition de la subjectivité. Le secret échappe. Il relance heureusement notre désir de savoir, notre avidité de lire, notre besoin de lui donner un contenu. Il est ainsi l’un des noms, secrets et éclatants, de la littérature.

In einer Nahbetrachtung der diplomatischen und finanztechnischen Aktionen der beteiligten Diplomaten, Politiker und Kaufleute und ihrer jeweiligen Einschätzungen durch Roland Richter wird die Komplexität des historischen Prozesses erkennbar und ein weiterführender Beitrag zur transatlantischen Niederlandeforschung geleistet.

    Description: Originally published in 1974. Focusing on a set of Jewish communities, Robert Chazan tells how, by the eleventh century, French Jews had created for themselves a role as local merchants and moneylenders in adapting to the political, economic, and social limits imposed on them. French society, striving to become more powerful and civilized, was willing to extend aid and protection to the Jews in return for general stimulation of trade and urban life and for the immediate profit realized from taxation. While the authorities were relatively successful in protecting the Jews from others, there was no power to impose itself between the Jews and their protectors. The political and social well-being of the Jews was, therefore, dependent on the will of the governing authorities who taxed their holdings and regulated their activities. During the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, the position of the Jews was constantly under attack by reform elements in the church concerned with Jewish moneylending and blasphemous materials in Jewish books; these reformers were eventually devoted to a serious missionizing effort within the Jewish community. The Jews' situation was further complicated by deep popular animosity, expressing itself in a damaging set of slanders and occasionally in physical violence. Despite the impressive achievements of the Jews in medieval northern France, by the thirteenth century their community was increasingly constricted; and in 1306, they were expelled from royal France by Philip IV. Overcoming the handicap of a lack of copious source material, Chazan analyzes the Jews' political status, their relations with key elements of Christian society, their demographic development, their economic outlets, their internal organization, and their attitudes toward the Christian environment. As it highlights aspects of French society from an unusual perspective, Medieval Jewry in Northern France should be of special interest to the historian of medieval France as well as to the student of Jewish history. This story is also significant for all who are fascinated by the capacity of human groups to respond and adapt creatively to a hostile and limiting environment.

King Roderigo, the last Visigoth king of Spain, rapes (or possibly seduces) La Cava, the daughter of his friend and counselor, Count Julian. In revenge, the count travels to North Africa and conspires with its Berber rulers to send an invading army into Spain. So begins the Muslim conquest and the end of Visigothic rule. A few years later, in Northern Spain, Pelayo initiates a Christian resistance and starts a new line of kings to which the present-day Spanish monarchy traces its roots.Patricia E. Grieve follows the evolution of this story from the Middle Ages into the modern era, as shifts in religious tolerance and cultural acceptance influenced its retelling. She explains how increasing anti-Semitism came to be woven into the tale during the Christian conquest of the peninsula—in the form of traitorous Jewish conspirators. In the sixteenth century, the tale was linked to the looming threat of the Ottoman Turks. The story continued to resonate through the Enlightenment and into modern historiography, revealing the complex interactions of racial and religious conflict and evolving ideas of women’s sexuality.In following the story of La Cava, Rodrigo, and Pelayo, Grieve explains how foundational myths and popular legends articulate struggles for national identity. She explores how myths are developed around few historical facts, how they come to be written into history, and how they are exploited politically, as in the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492 followed by that of the Moriscos in 1609. Finally, Grieve focuses on the misogynistic elements of the story and asks why the fall of Spain is figured as a cautionary tale about a woman’s sexuality.

    Description: À un moment où l’on s’efforce de combler le fossé économique, politique et psychologique qui sépare les rives nord et sud de la Méditerranée, il a paru utile de présenter une pratique peu connue - la caravane maritime - qui a, partiellement, joué ce rôle pendant un siècle et demi. Ce vocable quelque peu inattendu désignait la prestation de service que rendirent, de la fin du XVIIe au début du XIXe siècle, les marins européens aux sujets de l’Empire ottoman. Ils assuraient la plupart des liaisons maritimes pour cette immense construction politique à peu près dépourvue de navires de commerce, bien que bordant la majeure partie du littoral méditerranéen. Après avoir exposé les conditions juridiques qui ont encouragé ce type d’association temporaire, Daniel Panzac présente les marins, la pratique quotidienne de la caravane, avant d’évoquer ensuite les affréteurs ottomans. C’est principalement à travers leurs différends que se révèlent les éphémères relations de ces hommes et leur façon de surmonter leur méfiance et leurs préjugés. Ce faisceau dense de liaisons maritimes favorisa la constitution d’un ensemble économique, une « économie-monde », facteur essentiel de cohésion de cet État aussi vaste qu’hétérogène que fut l’Empire ottoman, ensemble dont l’effondrement dans la première moitié du XIXe siècle précéda l’éclatement politique.

En la historia de la literatura el poder recordarlo está restringido a pocas obras, aquellas que se consideran clásicas y monumentos culturales. En el caso de Amadís de Gaula hay un detalle más que hace notable la permanencia en el tiempo, pues también hay que tomar en cuenta que esta obra fue el paradigma de libros tildados de ociosos cuando no de locos o dañinos.

    Description: La famille constitue depuis longtemps un objet d’étude privilégié des historiens des sociétés. Ayant abandonné l’attention presque exclusive accordée autre­fois aux seuls lignages aristocratiques voire royaux, cette histoire de la famille a connu depuis un demi-siècle de profonds renouvellements, tant thématiques que méthodologiques. Directement impliquée dans l’histoire quantitative, notamment par le biais de la « reconstruction des familles », la thématique familiale s’est retrouvée au centre de l’histoire des mentalités. Ultérieurement enfin, via l’importation de problématiques venues des autres sciences sociales et le recours à la démarche « micro-historique », la famille s’est muée en un espace social et anthropologique au sein duquel sont mises à jours les dynamiques qui affectent ces réalités familiales. Dans le même temps, ces réflexions sur le passé d’une réalité sociale toujours vivante viennent en écho aux interrogations contemporaines sur le devenir de la famille nucléaire. La « crise » d’un modèle familial pluriséculaire et les recompositions familiales auxquelles elles donnent lieu placent ces réflexions sur la famille au cœur d’un débat de société particulièrement intense. Dans ce contexte qui fait de la famille un sujet d’actualité brûlant, le colloque organisé à Toulouse a voulu dresser un bilan des travaux les plus récents des meilleurs spécialistes du sujet, il s’est inscrit dans une démarche délibérément comparatiste tout en insistant sur les continuités et les ruptures identifiables tant en termes de problématiques, de démarches que de résultats. Compte tenu de la spécificité du laboratoire à l’origine de cette réflexion, le comparatisme concerne essentiellement les espaces français et ibérique, ce dernier étant compris au sens large puisqu’il intègre les sociétés coloniales ibéro-américaines. Dans le même temps, ce colloque a fait le choix de la transdisciplinarité et de la longue durée, depuis le bas Moyen-Âge jusqu’au xxe siècle. Cette longue phase chronologique coïncide avec l’émergence puis le développement de la structure nucléaire, modèle familial précisément en cours de redéfinition aujourd’hui. À son propos, leurs auteurs y confrontent des approches historiques, sociologiques, anthropologiques et juridiques qui toutes éclairent les complexités de cette histoire tout en contextualisant les interroga­tions contemporaines.

Cet essai vaut, au-delà de la pièce, pour l’histoire de la transmission en général. On y trouve une description des différentes classes de manuscrits, avec une étude des habitudes de lecture et des courants d’érudition de Byzance jusqu’aux écoles modernes. Suivent le texte grec avec apparat, et la traduction. Le livre se clôt sur une analyse qui restitue les mètres des chants de chœur et sur un index relatif à l’introduction. Les trois autres volumes contiennent la paraphrase argumentée (l’argument) des unités scéniques, ouvrant une discussion du détail. L’ambition dépasse celle d’un simple commentaire. La présentation prend souvent la forme de dossiers sur des questions de linguistique, de mythologie ou d’histoire des religions. Elle inclut et situe la diversité des constructions possibles, et légitime équitablement le choix de l’éditeur. Elle retrace en effet les conditions dans lesquelles s’est faite la lecture au cours des siècles selon les nations (et les traditions culturelles, politiques et religieuses). L’analyse remonte partiellement jusqu’à la Renaissance, mais répertorie plus systématiquement les opinions soutenues depuis le tournant décisif du xviiie siècle, montant toute une histoire de la philologie. À la fin du dernier volume un index multiple inclut les orientations idéologiques de la critique et les faits de langue et de style.

    Description: Karel Teige was one of the leading theorists of the Czech avant-garde, and his activity is bound up with the most enriching cultural contributions made to the Czech Republic in the first half of the twentieth century. Proclaiming himself a Marxist, he was frequently at odds with Czech liberal-pragmatic thought. The emergence of European totalitarianism coincided with a major turning-point in his life when, towards the end of the 1930s, he had to come to terms with the Nazi invasion of his country and with the local version of Stalinism. After the War he was marginalised from cultural life and he died of a heart attack while being persecuted in a ferocious campaign of defamation by the Communist Party. The book offers a portrait of this protagonist of European culture and of the process of rediscovery that in the 1960s reintegrated his work and his thought into the extraordinary cultural revival that blossomed in the Prague Spring of 1968.

    Description: O antigo Paço dos arcebispos de Braga ocupa um inequívoco lugar de destaque na paisagem urbana bracarense, cuja complexa história se entrecruza com a da construção do próprio palácio, constituído por um complexo de edifícios que se foram anexando uns aos outros, entre os séculos XIV e XVIII. Situado nas proximidades da Sé Catedral, o Paço arcebispal desenvolve-se por uma vasta área do centro histórico de Braga, sendo reconhecido como um dos edifícios patrimoniais mais emblemáticos da cidade, que tira também partido das características que foram conferidas aos seus espaços envolventes no contexto da intervenção de restauro ocorrida entre 1930 e 1950. Como exemplar complexo de arquitetura civil, o Paço arcebispal conta-nos uma história longa e dinâmica, associada aos protagonistas que ajudaram a dar forma aos edifícios que formalizam o palácio, um indiscutível testemunho do poder e importância que os arcebispos tiveram na história de Braga. O Paço dá também conta da evolução e do pulsar da cidade ao longo de séculos, pois nele encontramos expressões das diferentes tendências artísticas e culturais que se fizeram sentir, um pouco por toda a Europa, entre os finais da Idade Média e os finais do Antigo Regime. Assim, os seus sucessivos acrescentos e fases construtivas representam exemplos paradigmáticos da racionalidade urbanística e das linguagens arquitetónicas características do longo período de progressiva construção dos “paços” que compõem o Paço arcebispal bracarense. A história da sua evolução representa também um excelente testemunho das mudanças ocorridas nas cidades com vocação senhorial, permitindo-nos entender como foram mudando as estratégias de propaganda e de afirmação pública do poder no espaço urbano medieval, renascentista e barroco.

    Description: Before the Civil War, American writers such as Catharine Maria Sedgwick and Harriet Beecher Stowe had established authorship as a respectable profession for women. But though they had written some of the most popular and influential novels of the century, they accepted the taboo against female writers, regarding themselves as educators and businesswomen. During and after the Civil War, some women writers began to challenge this view, seeing themselves as artists writing for themselves and for posterity.Writing for Immortality studies the lives and works of four prominent members of the first generation of American women who strived for recognition as serious literary artists: Louisa May Alcott, Elizabeth Stuart Phelps, Elizabeth Stoddard, and Constance Fenimore Woolson. Combining literary criticism and cultural history, Anne E. Boyd examines how these authors negotiated the masculine connotation of "artist," imagining a space for themselves in the literary pantheon. Redrawing the boundaries between male and female literary spheres, and between American and British literary traditions, Boyd shows how these writers rejected the didacticism of the previous generation of women writers and instead drew their inspiration from the most prominent "literary" writers of their day: Emerson, James, Barrett Browning, and Eliot.Placing the works and experiences of Alcott, Phelps, Stoddard, and Woolson within contemporary discussions about "genius" and the "American artist," Boyd reaches a sobering conclusion. Although these women were encouraged by the democratic ideals implicit in such concepts, they were equally discouraged by lingering prejudices about their applicability to women.

Price illuminates martial arts as a site of knowledge exchange between Black, Asian, and Asian American people and cultures to offer new insights into the relationships among these groups. Drawing on case studies that include Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s appearance in Bruce Lee’s film Game of Death, Ron Van Clief and the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense, the Wu-Tang Clan, and Chinese American saxophonist Fred Ho, Price argues that the regular blending and borrowing between these distinct cultural heritages is healing rather than appropriative. His analyses of performance, power, and identity within this cultural fusion demonstrate how, historically, urban working-class Black men have developed community and practiced self-care through the contested adoption of Asian martial arts practice. By zeroing in on this rich but heretofore understudied vein of American cultural exchange, Price not only broadens the scholarship around sites of empowerment via such exchanges but also offers a compelling example of nonessentialist liberation for the twenty-first century.

On peut alors s’interroger sur le droit qui guide les actions d’Yvain : est-ce celui du plus juste, ou du plus fort ?

    Description: L’inceste marque de sa monstruosité les consciences collectives. Cantonné dans la sphère du tabou et de l’infamie, nul ne peut le discuter, nul ne peut le pratiquer. Le phénomène existe pourtant sous différentes formes selon les sociétés dans lesquelles il est rencontré et pensé. En France, au xixe siècle, l’inceste a une histoire. Lorsqu’en 1791 les Constituants décident de le décriminaliser, la société française voit s’ouvrir un siècle de débats qui conduit à une requalification profonde du phénomène et de son imaginaire. L’étude croisée des discours entretenus par les élites souligne les étapes qui ont présidé à la construction de l’inceste criminel. À la fin du siècle, il n’est plus l’apanage des aristocrates décriés par les Lumières mais bien celui d’hommes pauvres, devenus les symboles d’une nouvelle dangerosité. La justice, par l’entrelacement de ses échelles et de ses acteurs, contribue également à fabriquer et à imposer progressivement ce masque sur le phénomène incestueux. Mais l’inceste n’est pas qu’un crime au xixe siècle. En tentant de pénétrer au cœur même des familles, cet ouvrage montre qu’il peut également être une sexualité consentie qui se pratique dans la clandestinité de certains foyers français. Réalité multiforme, interdit plus que tabou, l’inceste mérite en ce sens d’être replacé dans une histoire plus courte que l’intemporalité des anthropologues.

    Description: Homme de la frontière, Walter Scott est bien placé pour écrire sur cette limite à la fois concrète, topologique et abstraite, théorique. Né entre deux âges, à Édimbourg, capitale écossaise aux deux visages divisée entre la Vieille Ville et la Ville Nouvelle, il est issu d’une puissante famille frontalière et a passé sa jeunesse dans les Borders, zone de marche entre l’Angleterre et l’Écosse, avant de s’y installer définitivement. Structure charnière et conjonctive, la frontière est la véritable héroïne de sa série des "Waveley Novels" dont le nom est tiré du titre du premier roman publié il y a deux cents ans. L’œuvre de Scott est d’entrée de jeu placée sous le signe du déplacement et plus particulièrement de l’errance qui fait référence à un voyage interminable et sans but précis. Waverley, le prénom du personnage éponyme, vient en effet du verbe « waver » qui, certes, signifie hésiter en anglais, mais qui a aussi le sens d’errer, de vagabonder en écossais vernaculaire où il est employé comme un synonyme du verbe « wander ». Les intrigues romanesques reposent sur ces jeux de traversées transfrontalières, à la fois physiques et symboliques, qui sont l’occasion d’épreuves initiatiques transgressives en accord avec l’autre sens du mot errance, synonyme de défiance et d’erreur. Cette monographie s’interroge sur le rôle de la frontière chez Scott dans le contexte littéraire des récits de voyage sur l’Écosse avec Defoe, Pennant ou encore Johnson et Boswell, et dans le cadre historique de la tradition du voyage au XVIIIe siècle. L’objet de cette étude sur l’écriture de la frontière, et notamment du voyage erratique, est de dégager une voie du milieu que nous qualifierons de scottienne, c’est-à-dire propre à l’écrivain.

Diesen Fragen wird mit Hilfe einer zweiteiligen Untersuchung auf der Grundlage einer umfangreichen Frequenzanalyse von Aufgaben in Geschichtslehrwerken der Sekundarstufe II in NRW sowie einer Korpusanalyse von Lernendentexten zu einer authentischen Vergleichsaufgabe aus einem Geschichtslehrwerk nachgegangen. Die Arbeit verbindet den geschichtsdidaktischen Zugang mit dem linguistischen Ansatz der Funktionalen Pragmatik, um das Vergleichen als Handlungsmuster des Geschichtsunterrichts zu bestimmen und es im Hinblick auf seinen kommunikativen Zweck in Teilhandlungen aufzuschlüsseln. Der Zugang wird ergänzt durch den Bezug zur Schreibdidaktik, der gerade im Hinblick auf wissenschaftspropädeutisches Arbeiten in der Sekundarstufe II eine wichtige Rolle spielt. Aus den Ergebnissen der Untersuchungen wird auf der Grundlage eines Indikatorenmodells ein praxisorientierter Weg zum Umgang mit Vergleichsaufgaben im Geschichtsunterricht vorgeschlagen.

    Description: This research offers an integral analysis of the aesthetic thought of the director, playwright and art theorist Nikolaj Nikolaevic Evreinov. The work focuses on the analysis of the treaty The revelation of art, written in Paris in the 1930s, which represents the greatest testimony of the author's research in the aesthetic field. Henceforth, a connection is offered between the known aspects of Evreinov's theatrical thought, relating to the period of the avant-garde in Russia, and others, of a broader nature, which have long been precluded from being known. Through insights on the Russian theatrical history of the early 20th century, reflections touching textual criticism, the history of aesthetic thought and Russian criticism, the complex figure of an artist emerges against the background of the culture expressed by post-revolutionary Russian emigration. An artist who, as an intellectual, begins a dialogue with the Western European cultural tradition. This book thus intends to restore the visibility, as well as an exegetical and historiographic completeness, of Evreinov’s rich legacy as a writer, a philosopher and a critic.

Abecassis traces the recurrent themes of Cohen's works.     Description: La Estoria de España, written under the aegis of Alfonso X the Wise, King of Castile and León (1252-1284), traces the history of the Iberian Peninsula and more specifically of Castile, from its origins to the 13th century. While many renowned researchers have studied the Estoria, all of this work, which is also essential, only offers a partial view of the first part of the chronicle. No comprehensive study has in fact been devoted to the story of the origins. However, in order to measure the richness and complexity of peninsular history, it is necessary to take into account this large time interval between the beginnings of humanity and the year 711. The domination of the Greeks, the Carthaginians, the Romans, the Barbarians and the Visigoths, the collapse of the Kingdom of Toledo and the beginnings of the Kingdom of Asturias do indeed constitute a story of the origins. The author of the book therefore starts from the premise that the first 565 chapters of the Estoria cannot be considered as a mere preliminary without any political significance. Several questions are thus at the origin of this work: how do the new challenges of the 13th century (expansion of the borders of the kingdom, fecho del Imperio, new political conceptions, opposition of the nobility and the clergy, monopolization of writing by the king…) influence the conception of Spain's past? How does the Wise King found the greatness of the Iberian Peninsula, how does he legitimize its foundations and how does he define the exercise of royal power? The analysis of the different episodes, of the numerous portraits, of the relationships between the characters, as well as of the writing processes makes it possible to bring to light the textual and ideological originality of this part of the chronicle and the links between the Estoria and the Alphonsine ideal defended in the other works of the Wise King. Unraveling the biblical, ancient and medieval structures and topics used by the Wise King, the author reveals the different networks of symbolic, political, sapiential and spiritual transmission that are at work in the story and thus highlights the way in which the sovereign, by celebrating a common territory and past, guarantors of Hispanic identity, develops a myth of national creation; which allows Soizic Escurignan to conclude that the story of the origins is meant to be programmatic, and more than that, performative.

    Description: Bilbo le Hobbit, les Chroniques de Narnia et Le Seigneur des anneaux ont habitué leurs lecteurs à rencontrer dans le livre une ou plusieurs cartes des territoires qu’ils décrivent. En allait-il de même pour les lecteurs des fictions de la première modernité, entre les XVIe et XVIIIe siècles ? L’introduction de cartes n’allait pas de soi. Leur impression augmentait le coût des ouvrages, et la capacité des mots à produire des images mentales les rendait inutiles. Néanmoins, les cartes apparurent dans les œuvres d’imagination. Initiée avec les cartes des itinérances de don Quichotte et menant jusqu’aux éditions vénitiennes d’œuvres de L’Arioste et de Pétrarque, cette enquête s’est principalement attachée à deux généalogies. La première, anglaise, donne à voir les périples d’un voyageur imaginaire présenté comme bien réel : elle conduit des Voyages de Gulliver de Jonathan Swift à L’Utopie de Thomas More. La seconde, française et allégorique, a pour origine la Carte de Tendre, insérée dans la Clélie de Mademoiselle de Scudéry, et inclut les cartes galantes ou polémiques qui l’ont imitée. Selon les époques et les lieux, les cartes des fictions ont assumé divers rôles. Elles ont représenté des mondes à l’envers, satiriques, critiques ou utopiques ; elles ont brouillé la distinction entre le monde du livre et celui du lecteur ; elles ont nourri la raison et les rêves, au-delà même de la lettre du texte. Cheminant d’œuvre en œuvre, Roger Chartier offre dans cet essai une nouvelle approche de la mobilité des fictions et de leurs interprétations.

    Description: This chapter discusses the representation of West and Central African cities in Francophone African narratives of diasporic return. Using as case studies Camara Laye’s Dramouss (A Dream of Africa; 1966), Aïssatou Cissokho’s Dakar, la touriste autochtone (“Dakar, the Native Tourist”; 1986), and Daniel Biyaoula’s L’Impasse (“The Impasse”; 1996), the chapter focuses on the texts’ portrayals of urban mobility practices and transport to explore the role of mobility in the construction of the postcolonial African city as experienced by the diasporic returnee, typical a displaced postcolonial mobile subject. In the discussed novels, various modes of mobility move the protagonists around in their former hometowns, permitting encounters with city dwellers and formerly familial urban landscapes. The texts’ portrayals of the returnees’ urban mobilities highlight the tensions between memory and the present and underline the protagonists’ sense of unbelonging and disillusionment. By focusing on African cities from the perspective of urban mobilities, the chapter contributes to the on-going postcolonialization of literary urban studies and enhances the field’s dialogue with mobilities research.

    Description: Through his literary, historical and political oeuvre, Safvet-beg Bašagić (1870-1934) has formulated the great issues of bosnian-muslim nationalism, at a time when his community retreated from the demands placed upon it by the process of modernisation imposed by the austro-hungarian presence since the Berlin Congres of 1878. Inspired by ottoman, croat and serb nationalist movements of the 19th century, he attempted to establish an identity that was distinct from those of these movements by affirming the religious and cultural specificity of his fellow believers and compatriots. These engagements were intimately connected to the agrarian question in Bosnia-Herzegovina: Bašagić acted as a conservator, stressing that ownership of land was a historical right of the local beylicat, to which he belonged. During his lifetime he did not have the audience for which he would have wished; but the essential elements of his theses, despite their lack of scientific rigor, have flourished today.

    Description: This study deals with the first works by Don DeLillo, from Americana (1971) to Running Dog (1978), but it also extends its investigation horizon to his following works. The work deals specifically with the conception of time, and the way it is represented in the texts of the American author. By integrating the philosophy of time with narratology, the volume offers critical reflections aimed at identifying the type of poetics through which DeLillo articulates time in his work. In particular, the centrality of the perception of time in his novels and, more specifically, the concentration of the plots in certain moments, the oblique presence of the influence of Samuel Beckett's work in the representation of duration and the attention of the author to the double temporality of the cinematographic image and its hidden aesthetic potential are highlighted. Therefore, time becomes the conceptual context in which the textures of these texts, and the themes characterising them, find a resolution. In the representation of time, in the microscopic analysis and in the slow motion of some specific time segments, DeLillo's narrative traces the possibilities of an indefinable and mysterious perception of reality and history.

À partir des embellissements qu’ont connus les villes d’Aix et de Marseille au milieu du xviie siècle, cet ouvrage permet de revenir sur ces événements qui ont profondément marqué l’organisation de nos villes.     Description: A-t-on séjourné chez des amis que la courtoisie oblige à les en remercier par une missive appelée lettre de château. L’auteur de ce livre, qui a eu la chance de côtoyer un peintre (Delvaux), des romanciers (Hyvernaud, Villiers de l’Isle-Adam), des essayistes (Barthes, Quignard), des poètes (Follain, Ghil, Jaccottet, Ponge, Reverdy, Tardieu), a souhaité leur rendre hommage. Il en a résulté ce livre. Son lecteur pourra y discerner des motifs de prédilection et peut-être une méthode. L’auteur n’a pas souhaité les expliciter, persuadé qu’il est que la littérature n’exprime jamais que des singularités. Et qu’il est nécessaire, aujourd’hui plus que jamais, de les affirmer, comme autant de mots de désordre propres à désorganiser les savoirs convenus de la critique.
