Description: A discussion of several kinds of ether as they can be inferred from Geosciences, and what the existence of the ether could imply for Physics and Cosmology. A tribute to the memory of my mentor Franco Selleri.
Description: This article is written in honor of my mentor Franco Selleri who has helped to consolidate my awareness of the existence of a medium subtended to ordinary matter, and from which everything comes. From my field, the Earth Sciences, come clues converging on an important role of the ether in the geological evolution of Earth and planets, as well as all the structures of the universe. Paleogeographic reconstructions allow a rough quantitative evaluation of the amount of new ordinary matter that is added to the planet in the unity of time, and the consequent statement of some cosmological consequences and on the inner energy balance of the Earth. The concept of central flow of ether defended here is different from the Lorentian stationary ether, but the two concepts could be made compatible.

Description: Oceanographical observations were made along the Colombian coast,in the Caribbean Sea, aboard the R /V ARC San Andres of the Colombian Navy, in September 1972, as pant of the national contribution to CICAR program. This paper analiza the surface sea water physical properties distribution off the Colombian Guajira Peninsula between meridians 71°-75° W and the vertical section crossing the upwelling main area during summer time. Anomalies in the surface distribution of temperature, salinity and density near La Guajira coast, in the vicinity of 72cW were observed; waters with low temperatures (T=25.50 °C) associated with high salinities (S〉36,50 %) were recorded in this region. lt has been possible to determine that these anomalies are due to upward motiones, the intensity of which was calculated by means of a mathematical Model, to be about 11 4 m/ - month. The continuity of the up ward motions was confirmed by the currence of drift currents, which made transport of "upwelled" waters to NW and W, extending its influence along the Colombian coast.

Description: The current of CromweII is one of worid's largest oceanic current which influences the Colombian South Pacific. The present work studied the thermo-haline parameters and the geoslrophlc palterns during two air-sea interactions events as "La Niña" (1996) and "El Niño" (1997). It has been determinad that the Current of CromweII was present during both phenomena. During the coid event (La Niña) it.was slightiy upper, between 75- 200 meters depth with salinities of 34.9 o/oo and for the warm event (El Niño) it was deeper between 75- 300 meters with haline conditions about 35- 35.1 o/oo. It is possible to conclude that under positive anomaly conditions or coId event, the Current is less intense at the Colombian South Pacific than in the negativa one.

Description: The distribution of the upwelling zones in the River basin of the Colombian Pacific has been found by the calculation of the vertical velocities with monthly average of water temperature and salinity data. The calculation is based on the theory of the solution of diagnostic problems with the vertical integration of the equation of continuity and a no lineal three-dimensional model. The results show the existence of the upwelling zones in the CPO during the whole year with 15600 quadrates miles approximately in the thin 0-100 m. Here the vertical velocity of the water going up is in 2x10^-5 cm/s more than the vertical velocity of the water going down. These magnitudes and the distribution of the upwelling zones chance during the year with the migration of the Inter tropical convergence zone, ITCZ. The most intensive and extended upwelling zone can be observed at the first months of the year (february-april) and at the last months (november-december). The upwelling zones start to decrease from May and are minimums between august and october. The upwelling near the Malpelo island, is observed in all the year except in november and December. Around the Gorgona Island upwelling in every month were not appraised, but it is intensive in february, april and december.

Description: This paper present the results of the work that was conducted in Pacific Pollution Center (CCCP). The Coastal Zone to San Andres of Tumaco has been afected progressively in the last 40 years modifying his morphology and the way of life of their inhabitants. The purpose of that work is to identify the sectors that they have suffered this process and causes and effects on the population and his territory. The results evidenced that the coastal zone of Tumaco has been impacted by frequent and continuous erosion sedimentation processes caused by diverse factors such as, the sedimentary contribution of the main rivers (Mira and Patía) and the dynamics of the surge that transports his sedimentary loads. Other physical events to be considered are the Tsunamis of 1958 and 1979 and the ENSO 1982/83 and 97/98. In'this way, five are the sectors that they have been mostly affected: the islands of Bocagrande and Vaquería, Guano, Viciosa and Tumaco, the island of the Morro, and the coastal sector of San Juan Village and Pasacaballos.

Description: The village of San Andrés Tumaco, in Colombia, has suffer the impact of great magnitude tsunamis events, which have caused serious damage and death in the area. The last tsunami, occurred on December 12, 1979 (M 8.2), affected the population of Tumaco in particular. However, it is believed that the disaster was lessened by the existence of Guano barrier island, a littoral sand island that disappeared in the event, and located in front of city of Tumaco. In this work a comparative study of tsunami action in the Tumaco Bay is carried out, taking the present situation (without barrier island) and the situation previous to 1979 (with barrier island), in oder to consider the viability of regeberating the old Guano barrier island as a protective element for the population in this area. This analysis was carried out by means of the identification of earthquake parameters and focal mechanisms of tsunami generation in the zone, the application of a numerical model of tsunami generation and propagation and the evaluation of tsunami action on the islands of Tumaco. The results of the simulations for Tumaco showed that in the present situation, this zone is vulnerable to the impact and flood by tsunamis from a near source. It was proven that barrier island considerably reduced the energy flow and the flooding level of the tsunami waves upon Tumaco in the 1979 event. However, if this tsunami had occurred during a higher tide, the impact would have been greater. In order to reduce flooding risk due to tsunami upon the city of Tumaco, the alternative proposed in this paper is to regenerate and modify the morphology of the old Guano barrier island to provide better protection for the city.

Description: The flood zones for Buenaventura city were delimited by using the numerical model TIME. The obtained results allowed determining the eventually most dangerous epicenter, inside the Colombo-Ecuatorian fault, for this poputation. Taking into account this origin, the impact of events with different magnitudes and tide levels v^as studied. The study of both, vulnerability conditions and advantages over other towns, suggests Buenaventura as a possible operations center, for near towns, in the case of an emergency.

Description: Six oceanographics observations taken between 1975 and 1986 on the colombian Pacific, were analized and used for the description of its gestrophic circulation; the geostrophic method was calculed using -250 db, as no motion level and the Helland- Hansen procedure. The geostrophics currents on the surface, state the presence of one semipermanent Colombian Current meander at latitud 6°N, north with changes on its intensity and a coastal current off Choco is advise flowing to the south. During events from ENSO phenomena the response of the dynamic topography shows eddies and meanders on the surface related to and increase of the steric level and arrival of waters coming from the west which changed the normal circulation of the study area. On the analysis of the thermohaline distribution was found that subsurface Ecuatorial Water and Central Ecuatorial Water are transported by the Colombian Current alternatively and it was advised the presence of intermediary Antarctic Water and Pacific Deep Water.

Description: This study on the hidrological conditions in the Colombian Pacific Ocean, was carried out based on information gathered by the CIOH. The data of samples were obtained throughout the months of September -March- September of 1990 and 1991, respectively. The studying area was located between 2ºN-6ºN latitude and 77º30' W longitude 82°W A different 30-33 station sampling method was used for each conceming year. Temperature and salinity data were obtained up to 500 m in depth at each station. The superficial and sub-superficial temperature and salinity parameters were analized throughout the study. Temperature analysis was carried out by using horizontal charts from 0.50 to 200 m in depth. This same method was app/ied to determine salinity al 0 and 50 m horizons. After analyzing these parameters, the water structure was determined by identifying the different water masses in the vertical waydown, By using the Shtokman 's method, through T-S curves, the water masses were defined Two masses were identified: the superficial one and the subsuperficial one. Final/y, through a dynamic model, the water circulation was determined at 0,50 and 200 m horizons. The running water characteristics, the stability direction and its penetration depths can be known by using this dynamic model.

Description: This study was carried out in order to apply severa! principies of the physical oceanography to determine the possible reasons for persistent law quality water conditions in ''El Pindo" (Tumaco) area and propase a mechanism to recover physical, chemical and biologica/ conditions. The field work was done to determine different hydrological factors (temperature, salinity, suspended solids, dissolved oxygen, nutrients and transparency) as well as bathymetric, hydrodinamic and meteorological characteristics of the selected area. The obtained data were statistically processed and some of them were considered to outline a box model and consequently determine the residence time of these waters. During the period of the study, it was found that shallaw waters with wide sand banks causing the reduced shipway, are predominant. Salinity in high tide presents a remarkable variation between the surf ace and bottom values which were reported to be between 21.00 - 33.15o/oo and 23.22 - 33.22 aloa, respectively. Temperature variations along the water column were registered oscillating between 23.20 - 29.52 ºC and 26.88 - 29.18 ºC in botton and surface, respectively. This area was found to have a particular hydrodinamic circulation pattern, existing an evident difference in the currents course in each tide period due to the involved water volumes. It is concluded that the low water quality of ''El Pindo" area is not due to the circulation pattern but is caused by the bad bottom sediment quality and that could be improved by dredging to clean the waste area. Considering the calculated residence times far these waters (2 - 5 days), it is recommended that control on sawmill activities should be carried out since these are the main source of material deposits in the bottom that affect the water quality and reduce the deep areas causing a negative impact both on the predominant circulation pattem and chemical and biological characteristics of the bottom sediments.

Description: This work is a results of project "Hydrologic and Geologic study of the Urabá Gulf" corried out jointly wfth the Technical French Mission from 1988, which hada two year duration. At the CIOH, trough the Centre Nationale de Recherche Scientffique (CNRS) ANIM program the proccessing of a SPOT lmage took place; this image was received on an area during the mean stage (February/89) in order to determine the surface water circulation in the Gulf during such time using a turbidity feather (distríbutíon of material in suspension) of rivers flowíng there (Atrato, León, Turbo, etc). At the Bordeaux Uníversity (1991) a treatment of this image with the Perico/ar program was done for visualing the Gulf shore contour and the incidence of the wave fronts on the Bocatarena surroundings of Atrato river, in arder to analíze about the latter the. energy depositíon and concentration of waves around this section of the coast. The coasta! morpholígical changes (eros ion -sedimentation) ocurred within this area during the last recent years were obtained starting from comparisons of shore fines from nautical charts of 1938 and 1983 and from SPOT lmage coastal contour of 1989. A/so, ft was possible to determine the sea bottom mareations through bathymetric comparisons of the abovementioned charts. The Gulf surf ace water circulation shows two directions: N.S. towards the west sector which determines the East -west direction with a tendíng towards the south ot turbidity feather in front ot the river A trato flowíng; influenced by the action of trade winds during the age (mean) of the year; and N -Son the Gulf west zone where the turbidfty feather are affected towards the north and are loaded with plenty of material in suspension. The loss of large extensions of shore, the formation of /ftoral drifts and the development of deltas have determined important morpho!ogícal changes on the Gulf shore líne in the recent years. Contrary to the shore fine where erosion is predomínant overs sedimentation the Gulf bottom presents a great sediment acumulation towards its own east and central part specifically at Bahía Colombia.

Description: Water circulation and U - V sea velocity components of Colombian Pacific Ocean (CPO) are the results obtained from evolution modeling of thermohaline and dynamic characteristics of CPO. It was observed that superficial layer circulation is under the influence of Inter - Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) migration. This circulation also depends on the influence of superficial and sub-superficial currents (Peru Current, North Equatorial Countercurrent, Colombian Current, and Panama Current), which change their intensity during the year depending on trade winds influence. Vertical distribution of dynamic characteristics under these layers is practically constant. Submarine mountain ranges make it difficult to interchange waters of CPO with those of other regions, forming a local circulation in deep layers. In circulation system, a three layer vertical structure is observed: 0 - 80m, 80 - 200m and 200m - bottom.

Description: The vulnerability of Tumaco region due to the impact of tsunamis generated along the Pacific coast of Colombia was analyzed. Tsunami run-up in Tumaco was evaluated by means of the numerical simulation of tsunamis generated by seismic events, similar to the December 12, 1979 Colombian earthquake; at different locations atong the coast under high and low tidal conditions. The results of the numerical simulation, and the experience of the 1906 and 1979 tsunamis, corroborate the potencial tsunami risk of the region and the need of undertaking actions to mitigate material damages and loss of tíves before the imminent attack of the next tsunami in the Bay of tumaco. Tsunami records of the 1979 tsunami at Buenaventura - Colombia and Esmeraldas - Ecuador, as well as the description of the 1979 tsunami effect in Tumaco were used to qualify the results of the numerical simulation.

Description: The bay of Tumaco, located in the southernmost Pacific coast of Colombia, is a región threatened by the occurrence of tsunamis. Fourteen coastal populations of the municipalities of Tumaco and Francisco Pizarro are settled along the bay. Previous information about the expected arrival time and height of tsunamis generated locally, and of the time lapse in which the populations are threatened after a tsunami is triggered by an earthquake, becomes an essential tool for the effective implementation of local tsunami warning systems. In this study we analyze the arrival of the tsunami at 10 of the populations settled along Bay of Tumaco by means of the numerical simulation of a tsunami generated offshore the Bay of Tumaco. Tsunami amplification by resonance was found in some of the localities. Arrival times and heights were established from the resulting synthetic tsunamis at each one of the localities.

Description: Author(s): Shahab Joudaki, Manoj Kaplinghat, Ryan Keeley, and David Kirkby A “crisis in cosmology” is lurking in recent measurements of the Hubble constant H 0 (the current expansion rate of the Universe), caused by a tension between direct observations through distance measurements and an inferred value, computed with the standard model of cosmology ( Λ CDM) from CMB data. The latter involves an approx. 13 billion years time evolution. The authors use statistical methods to analyze different available data sets from different kind of observations that carry information about different moments from the evolution of the Universe, to determine H 0 in a model independent way, making only minimal basic assumptions, and find that the tension with direct observation of H 0 persists.
