Description: Between September 2001 and September 2002, Ultima Esperanza fjord and Señoret Channel were surveyed, sailing from Puerto Natales. Information on abundance, structure and distribution of aquatic and land birds observed during the sail is presented. We found 30 species of aquatic birds and 3 land birds.: 1 In Danger, 3 Vulnerables and 1 Insufficiently known. Our analysis shows that these fjords contained one of the biggest winter abundance of birds of the region and is a nesting area for many species. Furthermore, we proposed that the fjord constitute a core area for aquatic birds in summer when fresh water lagoons and ponds get dry. Finally, we make special reference to the need to implement a management plan in the area.

Description: The effect of marination on the shelf life of smoked eel (Anguilla anguilla) was investigated. The fish was hot smoked at 80°C for 90 min and separated into two samples: Lot A was immersed in a solution containing 4% acetic acid, 4% lemon juice and 10% NaCl, then stored at 4°C during 7 days. After the marination process, samples were transferred to a diluted solution, containing 2% acetic acid, and 2% NaCl. Lot B was directly immersed in the same diluted solution. Chemical (total volatile basic nitrogen), physical (pH), microbiological (Total viable count, coliforms, pathogen staphylocoques, sulphate reducing bacteria and salmonellas) and sensory analyses were performed on both lots during the storage. The marination reduced considerably the bacterial flora and permitted shelf life extension of both lots. Depending on the acetic acid and salt concentrations, the taste and aroma of the smoked eel were masked by the high acidity of lot A. According to sensory analyses the panellists have chosen lot B. TVB-N, pH and TVC values significantly increased during the storage, and were higher in lot B. Sensory analyses did not show unacceptable values up to 90 days of storage at 4 °C, but microbiological values showed unacceptable values after 7 and 10 weeks of storage for the B and A samples respectively.

Description: Recreational fishery is very popular around the world, being catch and release increasingly preferred. Few studies have been carried out concerning recreational fisheries in Cuba, and not one of them focus on the socio-economic characteristics of the activity. The aim of this research is (1) to socioeconomically characterize recreational fisheries in Jardines de la Reina and (2) to evaluate visitor’s perception concerning natural resources conservation. 93 recreational fishermen from 13 countries were interviewed, mainly from United Kingdom, Canada, Argentina and United States of America. The sample was dominated by males, 41 to 50 years old, married and with university degrees. 37% had visited Jardines de la Reina before, 4 times average. These repeaters currently consider the area in better environmental conditions than in previous visits. Recreational fishery is ranked good or excellent by interviewees and 100 % of them would recommend Jardines de la Reina as a fishing destination. The main attraction is the abundance of target species (first, tarpon (Megalops atlanticus); second, bonefish (Albula vulpes) and third, permits (Trachinotus sp.). It could be concluded that Jardines de la Reina are in a good environmental conservation status. Recreational fishery is compatible with the conservation status of protected area and is ranked as excellent and with international recognition by visitors. Jardines de la Reina exceed the expectation from recreational fishermen when visit the area.

Description: This study presents a framework for analyzing the interactions between aquaculture and capture fisheries in the context of ecosystem-based management. We extend a model of the economic and ecological systems in coastal New England by incorporating an aquaculture sector in a computable general equilibrium (CGE) model and by examining the forage fish and aquaculture link in a marine food web. We show that aquaculture and commercial fisheries interact in a complex way throughout the economic and ecological systems.

Description: The time is ripe for a comprehensive mission to explore and document Earth's species. This calls for a campaign to educate and inspire the next generation of professional and citizen species explorers, investments in cyber-infrastructure and collections to meet the unique needs of the producers and consumers of taxonomic information, and the formation and coordination of a multi-institutional, international, transdisciplinary community of researchers, scholars and engineers with the shared objective of creating a comprehensive inventory of species and detailed map of the biosphere. We conclude that an ambitious goal to describe 10 million species in less than 50 years is attainable based on the strength of 250 years of progress, worldwide collections, existing experts, technological innovation and collaborative teamwork. Existing digitization projects are overcoming obstacles of the past, facilitating collaboration and mobilizing literature, data, images and specimens through cyber technologies. Charting the biosphere is enormously complex, yet necessary expertise can be found through partnerships with engineers, information scientists, sociologists, ecologists, climate scientists, conservation biologists, industrial project managers and taxon specialists, from agrostologists to zoophytologists. Benefits to society of the proposed mission would be profound, immediate and enduring, from detection of early responses of flora and fauna to climate change to opening access to evolutionary designs for solutions to countless practical problems. The impacts on the biodiversity, environmental and evolutionary sciences would be transformative, from ecosystem models calibrated in detail to comprehensive understanding of the origin and evolution of life over its 3.8 billion year history. The resultant cyber-enabled taxonomy, or cybertaxonomy, would open access to biodiversity data to developing nations, assure access to reliable data about species, and change how scientists and citizens alike access, use and think about biological diversity information.

Description: The ocean plays a critical role in supporting human well-being, from providing food, livelihoods and recreational opportunities to regulating the global climate. Sustainable management aimed at maintaining the flow of a broad range of benefits from the ocean requires a comprehensive and quantitative method to measure and monitor the health of coupled human-ocean systems. We created an index comprising ten diverse public goals for a healthy coupled human-ocean system and calculated the index for every coastal country. Globally, the overall index score was 60 out of 100 (range 36-86), with developed countries generally performing better than developing countries, but with notable exceptions. Only 5% of countries scored higher than 70, whereas 32% scored lower than 50. The index provides a powerful tool to raise public awareness, direct resource management, improve policy and prioritize scientific research.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Halpern, Benjamin S -- Longo, Catherine -- Hardy, Darren -- McLeod, Karen L -- Samhouri, Jameal F -- Katona, Steven K -- Kleisner, Kristin -- Lester, Sarah E -- O'Leary, Jennifer -- Ranelletti, Marla -- Rosenberg, Andrew A -- Scarborough, Courtney -- Selig, Elizabeth R -- Best, Benjamin D -- Brumbaugh, Daniel R -- Chapin, F Stuart -- Crowder, Larry B -- Daly, Kendra L -- Doney, Scott C -- Elfes, Cristiane -- Fogarty, Michael J -- Gaines, Steven D -- Jacobsen, Kelsey I -- Karrer, Leah Bunce -- Leslie, Heather M -- Neeley, Elizabeth -- Pauly, Daniel -- Polasky, Stephen -- Ris, Bud -- St Martin, Kevin -- Stone, Gregory S -- Sumaila, U Rashid -- Zeller, Dirk -- England -- Nature. 2012 Aug 30;488(7413):615-20. doi: 10.1038/nature11397.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis, 735 State St Suite 300, Santa Barbara, California 93101, USA. halpern@nceas.ucsb.edu〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22895186" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉
