Description / Table of Contents: The Arctic has been affected by the ongoing climate and environmental change more than other regions of the earth. For the next century, increasing rates of change have been predicted. Only a few Arctic meteorological records date back to the 19th century. Hence paleoclimate archives are of particular importance for the reconstruction and assessment of past climate variability and its causes. In this thesis, glacier and ground ice from the Russian Arctic, more precisely an ice core from Akademii Nauk ice cap (Severnaya Zemlya) and syngenetic ice wedges from Oyogos Yar (Dmitrii Laptev Strait), both covering the Late Holocene, were studied to contribute new paleoenvironmental information. Both archives were mainly analyzed by using stable water isotopes. This thesis demonstrates the great potential of Akademii Nauk ice core for the high resolution reconstruction of regional climate and environmental variability. In particular, its delta-O-18 data can be used as proxy for temperature in the Western Eurasian Arctic revealing significant changes on different timescales. The 20th century was the warmest period of the last two millennia, with an absolute double-peaked maximum around AD 1920 - 1940. Of particular interest are rapid decadal-scale climate changes, which occured in the 15th and 16th century as well as at about AD 1900, most probably caused by internal dynamics of the Arctic climate system. Deuterium excess d provides valuable information on the participation of regional moisture in the precipitation feeding Akademii Nauk ice cap, which is linked to the regional sea ice extent. Decreasing delta-O-18 and sea salt ion values due to the increasing ice cap altitude prove the growth of Akademii Nauk ice cap in the Late Holocene. A new approach, comprising high resolution sampling and radiocarbon dating, was used to gain paleoenvironmental information from the syngenetic Oyogos Yar ice wedges. Even through no continuous records could be obtained due to still inconsistent dating results, paleoclimatic information could be extracted. Ice wedge delta-O-18 data show evidence that winters in the last decades were the warmest in the Late Holocene. These were accompanied by changes in the moisture sources, related to changes in the atmospheric circulation patterns and / or sea ice dynamics. Envisaged follow-up research will continue the work on the studied objects and will facilitate new insights into the paleoenvironmental history of the Eurasian Arctic.

Description / Table of Contents: The southern Española basin consists of a westward- and northward-thickening wedge of rift fill, composed primarily of Santa Fe Group sediments, that serves as an important aquifer for the city of Santa Fe and surrounding areas. Detailed aeromagnetic surveys were flown to better understand ground-water resources in this aquifer. This report presents a synthesis of these data with gravity data and other constraints. The interpretations were accomplished using qualitative interpretation, state-of-art data analysis techniques, and two- and three-dimensional modeling. The results depict the presence of and depth to many geologic features that have hydrogeologic significance, including shallow faults, different types of igneous units, and basement rocks. The results are presented as map interpretations, geophysical profile models, and a digital surface that represents the base and thickness of Santa Fe Group sediments, as well as vector files of some volcanic features and faults.

Description / Table of Contents: Effectively measuring the usability of any product requires choosing the right metric, applying it, and effectively using the information it reveals. "Measuring the User Experience" provides the first single source of practical information to enable usability professionals and product developers to do just that. Authors Tullis and Albert organize dozens of metrics into six categories: performance, issues-based, self-reported, web navigation, derived, and behavioral/physiological. They explore each metric, considering best methods for collecting, analyzing, and presenting the data. They provide step-by-step guidance for measuring the usability of any type of product using any type of technology. This book: presents criteria for selecting the most appropriate metric for every case; takes a product and technology neutral approach; and, presents in-depth case studies to show how organizations have successfully used the metrics and the information they revealed.Offers a source of information to enable usability professionals and product developers to choose the right metric, apply it, and effectively use the information it reveals. This book explores various metrics, considering best methods for collecting, analyzing, and presenting the data. It takes a product and technology neutral approach.

Description / Table of Contents: Tunneling projects are complex challenges for geotechnical and civil engineers. Tunnels are drilled under increasingly complex geological conditions, and, the most recent projects include extremly long tunnels, some of them with large diameters. Thus, the exploration and monitoring for the tunnel construction are gaining increasing importance. Geophysicists and engineers are required to develop exploration technologies which contribute to make tunnel excavation a safe, cost efficient, and sustainable procedure. Safe and robust technologies are needed which enable to explore geological structures at high resolution and which evaluate, visualize and interpret the resultson-site.

Description / Table of Contents: This textbook describes some of the most effective and straightforward quantitative techniques for modeling Earth surface processes. By emphasizing a core set of equations and solution techniques, the book presents state-of-the-art models currently employed in Earth surface process research, as well as a set of simple but practical research tools. Detailed case studies demonstrate application of the methods to a wide variety of processes including hillslope, fluvial, aeolian, glacial, tectonic, and climatic systems. Exercises at the end of each chapter begin with simple calculations and then progress to more sophisticated problems that require computer programming. All the necessary computer codes are available online at www.cambridge.org/9780521855976. Assuming some knowledge of calculus and basic programming experience, this quantitative textbook is designed for advanced geomorphology courses and as a reference book for professional researchers in Earth and planetary science looking for a quantitative approach to Earth surface processes.

Description / Table of Contents: Die Altersbestimmung der Gesteine ist eine Kernaufgabe der Geowissenschaften.

Description / Table of Contents: Der Tsunami vom 26.

Description / Table of Contents: Geothermal energy is one of the most widely-usedrenewable energies worldwide. Due to the fact thatit is available at any time, independent of the seasonand the climate, geothermal energy has become more and more attractive as the baseload supply for heat and electricity. The investment costs and risks of a geothermal power plant are still high, because the technology is in an early stage of development. Geothermal technology offers a huge potential for development and innovation, as well asfor protection of the climate and environment. If we can develop this huge potential successfully, geothermal energy will contribute significantly to a sustainable energy mix.

Description / Table of Contents: The book provides a systematic introduction into the fundamental ideas of thermodynamics at a somewhat advanced level. And it exhibits many applications of the theory in the fields of engineering, physics, chemistry, physical chemistry, and materials science. The universal equations of balance are strictly separated from the constitutive equations which characterize the behavior of material bodies, mostly gases, vapors, and liquids. Some selected solids like rubber, gels and shape memory alloys are considered as well.

Description / Table of Contents: Eloquent science evolved from a workshop aimed at offering atmospheric science students formal guidance in communications, tailored for their eventual scientific careers. Drawing on advice from over twenty books and hundreds of other sources, this volume presents informative and often humorous tips for writing scientific journal articles, while also providing a peek behind the curtain into the operations of editorial boards and publishers of major journals. The volume focuses on writing, reviewing, and speaking and is aimed at the domain of the student or scientist at the start of her career. The volume offers tips on poster presentations, media communication, and advice for non-native speakers of English, as well as appendices on proper punctuation usage and commonly misunderstood meteorological concepts. A further reading section at the end of each chapter suggests additional sources for the interested reader, and sidebars written by experts in the field offer diverse viewpoints on reference topics.--Publisher description
