    Description: From a high sedimentation rate core, obtained from the Yermak slope (Arctic Ocean), we deduced short-term climatic fluctuations of the last deglaciation lasting from 17,000 to 9,000 years BP. By using a coupled organic-geochemical and sedimentological approach, we reconstructed near-bottom current conditions and assessed their significance in relation with comparable global thermohaline circulation patterns and surface water conditions. Highest concentrations and fluctuations of specific marine phytoplankton biomarkers were obtained in the Bølling-Allerød, when the major deglaciation of the Svalbard-Barents-Sea-Ice-Sheet (SBIS) occurred. The marine biomarker record and the sedimentological record are consistent with climate reconstructions obtained from Greenland ice cores and thermohaline circulation variations. However, beginning with the Younger Dryas (YD) episode, bottom currents decreased during this time period, but surface waters remained very productive. The atmospheric conditions of the western Fram Strait (reconstructed from biomarker data) and thermohaline circulation signals (reconstructed from sedimentological data) were decoupled in the YD. Maximum insolation values of solar radiation and ''Föhn''-like winds enabled open water conditions and increased productivity values in the northern Fram Strait, at least in summer.

    Description: The modern Atlantic Ocean, dominated by the interactions of North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) and Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW), plays a key role in redistributing heat from the Southern to the Northern Hemisphere. In order to reconstruct the evolution of the relative importance of these two water masses, the NADW/AABW transition, reflected by the calcite lysocline, was investigated by the Globigerina bulloides dissolution index (BDX?). The depth level of the Late Glacial Maximum (LGM) calcite lysocline was elevated by several hundred metres, indicating a more corrosive water mass present at modern NADW level. Overall, the small range of BDX? data and the gradual decrease in preservation below the calcite lysocline point to a less stratified Atlantic Ocean during the LGM. Similar preservation patterns in the West and East Atlantic demonstrate that the modern west–east asymmetry did not exist due to an expansion of southern deep waters compensating for the decrease in NADW formation.

    Description: The sediment composition of deep-sea cores from the central Arctic Ocean, the Fram Strait, and the Yermak Plateau was analyzed for several parameters to reconstruct the history of marine paleoenvironment and terrestrial glaciation in the last 200,000 years. Layers with high amounts of coarse, terrigenous ice-rafted debris (IRD) and often high contents of smectite were deposited during extensive glaciations in northern Eurasia, when ice sheets reached the northern continental margins of the Barents and Kara seas and discharged icebergs into the Arctic Ocean. Intercalated layers with relatively low IRD and smectite contents, but abundant planktic foraminifers in the coarse fraction were deposited during periods of Atlantic Water inflow to the Arctic Ocean and seasonally open waters (leads) in a sea ice cover with only few icebergs in the Arctic Ocean. High IRD contents in the sediments reflect the presence of ice sheets on the Kara and Barents seas shelves and the hinterland during the entire oxygen isotope stage 6 (ca 190-130 ka), in substage 5b (ca 90-80 ka), at the stage boundary 5/4 (around 75 ka), and in late stage 4/early stage 3 (ca 65-50 ka). These results are in excellent correlation with those from recent field work in northern Scandinavia, European Russia, Siberia, and on the shelves. Relatively low amounts of IRD in central Arctic Ocean sediments from the Late Weichselian glacial maximum (ca 24-18 ka) correlate well with the recent reconstruction of a very limited eastern ice sheet extension during this time. Oxygen and carbon isotope records of planktic foraminifers from the analyzed sediment cores show a number of prominent excursions which can be interpreted as evidence for freshwater events in the Arctic Ocean. The synchroneity of freshwater events and IRD input suggests a common source. Strongest events were associated with deglaciations of the Barents and Kara seas after the ice sheets had blocked the outflow of large rivers for several millennia. The outflow of freshwater from large ice-dammed lakes occurred at ca 130, 80-75, and 52 ka. Freshwater events in the central Arctic Ocean during the last deglaciation (ca 18 ka) were relatively small compared to the previous events. This indicates that during most of the Late Weichselian glacial maximum a river outflow from northern Siberia to the Arctic Ocean was possible. Atlantic Water inflow to the Arctic Ocean and seasonally open waters in the ice (leads) occurred during the interglacials of oxygen isotope stage 1 and substage 5e, during several interstadials (stage 3, substages 5a and 5c), and to a lesser degree within stadials and glacials (stages 2, 4, and 6). With the exception of the interglacials, these periods were times of strong ice growth on the continents as revealed by terrestrial data. The coincidence suggests that open waters in the Arctic Ocean and the Nordic Seas were an important moisture source (in addition to more southerly sources) which fostered the growth of ice sheets on northern Eurasia.

    Description: The northward extent of the influence of the W African monsoon during humid periods of interglacials is subject to investigations highlighting feedback mechanisms, such as vegetation. To detect this regional variation and the climate system acting farther to the north will be the aim of this paper focussing on the Holocene. We present two very high-resolution Holocene sediment records off NW Africa located at 31°N and 27°N. The well-known mid-Holocene climate change from the "African Humid Period" to present arid conditions is well reflected by the terrigenous input in the southern core. In contrast, in the northern core spectral and wavelet analyses indicate a periodic oscillation of about 900 years of the terrigenous input throughout the last 9000 years B.P. We conclude that the W African monsoonal influence characterized by the abrupt climatic change at 5000 years B.P. can be separated from the influence of the N Atlantic climate system reflected by a periodic oscillation throughout the Holocene.

    Description: The environment of the Fram Strait, the only deepwater connection of the Arctic Ocean to the world oceans via the North Atlantic (Fig.7.8.1; see Fig.7.1.9), is influenced by the distribution of sea-ice and two opposing current systems. The northward flowing West Spitsbergen Current (WSC) transports warm, near-surface water (Manley 1995; Rudels et al. 2000) to the Northern Fram Strait. About 22% of the northward flowing Atlantic waters are re-circulated within the RAC (Return Atlantic Current) between 78 and 80°N, west of Svalbard. At 80°N the WSC splits into the Svalbard (ca. 33% of the WSC waters) and the Yermak Branch (ca. 45% of the WSC waters). On the western side of the Fram Strait, the East Greenland Current (EGC) transports cold and low-salinity water southwards along the eastern continental margin of Greenland. (Fig.7.8.1). Primary production in ice-covered areas of western Fram Strait is limited by sea-ice cover, and influenced by the predominant water mass. Productivity in the interior Arctic Ocean is generally low (0.09 gC/m²/day) (Wheeler et al. 1996; see Chapter 3). At marginal ice zones and oceanic fronts in the Fram Strait, however, primary productivity exhibits strong fluctuations and may exceed 1 gC/m²/day (Hirche et al. 1991). The accumulation of organic carbon in sediments depends not only on the supply from primary productivity, but also on selective degradation in sediments. Efficient vertical transport through the water column by formation of aggregations (ballast effect) (Ittekkot et al. 1992; Knies and Stein 1998) and increased lateral transport by strong currents enable a higher preservation of organic carbon in the sediments. In this region, the WSC is capable of transporting large amounts of suspended organic matter to the ice-covered regions in northern Fram Strait (Rutgers van der Loeff et al. 2002). Numerous studies have dealt with paleoceanography and the associated organic carbon accumulation in the sediments of Fram Strait and adjacent regions during the last glacial/interglacial cycle (e.g. Hebbeln 1992; Hebbeln et al. 1994; Elverhoi et al. 1995; Andersen et al. 1996; Hebbeln and Wefer 1997; Hebbeln et al. 1998; Notholt, 1998; Vogt et al. 2001, Taylor et al. 2002). However, in most of the sedimentary records a low temporal resolution prevents the identification of short-term climatic fluctuations, like those reconstructed from high-resolution terrestrial ice-core records. (e.g. GISP2/GRIP; Grootes et al. 1993). Occasionally, short-term events recorded as enhanced organic matter accumulation have been found in cores from the northern Fram Strait/Yermak Plateau region (Knies and Stein 1998; Vogt et al. 2001). These events are caused by a rapid incorporation of organic matter in fine-grained material followed by rapid transfer to the seafloor. Rapidly changing climatic and oceanographic conditions can be recorded exceptionally well by undisturbed deep-sea sediments, particularly in the distribution and variability of organic carbon in sediments. Yet, there exists little information about the regional response during the last deglaciation and the potential influence of terrigenous material on marine sedimentation of organic carbon in northern Fram Strait. To address this problem, we studied two high-resolution cores spanning the time intervals of the last glacial, the last deglaciation and the Holocene. Here, we present data on the distribution and sources of organic carbon in surface sediments and in long sediment cores. Accumulation rates of total sediment and organic carbon for three different time intervals are calculated and an organic carbon budget for Fram Strait Yermak Plateau is presented for the Holocene.

    Description: Analyses of benthic foraminifera in sediment cores taken at about 1000 m water depth at the Yermak Plateau and the Barents Sea slope, adjacent to the position of the ice-sheet edge during the Last Glacial Maximum, show that paleoproductivity was reduced to about a third of its present level during peak glacial stadials. These reduced values are still higher than values for modern, permanently ice-covered regions, suggesting that the core locations were at least partially ice-free even during stadials. Paleoproductivity at the core locations was higher than or equal to that of today during initial deglaciations and warm substages. Peak paleoproductivity occurred in samples with low-salinity surface waters as indicated by oxygen isotope values of planktonic foraminifera, and slightly after increased abundance of 'Atlantic species', suggesting that enhanced advection of warmer waters from the Atlantic supported the initial ice-sheet retreat. During the Holocene Climatic Optimum productivity was much less than at present on the Yermak Plateau, high at the Barents Sea site, perhaps because of increased advection of Atlantic water to the latter site and heavier ice coverage at the former. After this optimum, paleoproductivity at both sites was similar, with slightly lower values during cold periods such as the Little Ice Age.

    Description: The size of any organism is influenced by the surrounding ecological conditions. In this study, we investigate the effects of such factors on the size spectra of planktic foraminiferal assemblages from Holocene surface sediments. We analyzed assemblages from 69 Holocene samples, which cover the major physical and chemical gradients of the oceans. On a global scale, the range of sizes in assemblages triples from the poles to the tropics. This general temperature-related size increase is interrupted by smaller sizes at temperatures characteristic of the polar and subtropical fronts, at 2°C and 17°C, respectively, as well as in upwelling areas. On a regional scale, surface water stratification, seasonality and primary productivity are highly correlated with the size patterns. Such environmentally controlled size changes are not only characteristic for entire assemblage, but also for the dominant single species.

    Description: Surface sediments (n=39) from the western Fram Strait and across the Yermak Plateau (Arctic Ocean) were investigated by molecular and isotopic organic geochemical methods to determine the composition, distribution and origin of extractable aliphatic lipids (n-alkanes, n-alkanols, fatty acids). Bulk geochemical parameters (TOC-content, d13Corg) were also determined, including additional samples nearby. Enhanced organic carbon contents of up to 1.6% along the western slope of the Yermak Plateau and north off Spitsbergen, corroborated by an average d13Corg value of -22.3 per mil, indicated most of the organic material to be of a marine origin, despite ice-cover. The extractable aliphatic lipids contributed up to 1% of the sedimentary organic carbon and were dominated by fatty acids (0.7-9.1 mg/g TOC), whereas n-alkanes and n-alkanols contributed only minor amounts (0.1-0.4 mg/g TOC). The detailed molecular and carbon isotopic characterisation of the studied aliphatic compounds enabled assignments of most components to three lipid pools, representing: (a) primary production (marine phytoplankton, sea-ice algae), (b) secondary inputs (by feeding of zooplankton, benthic organisms and bacteria on the former) and (c) terrestrial-derived contributions. The first two compound groups dominated, but varied significantly in relation to the environment and were highest at the MIZ (Marginal Ice Zone), and along the permanently ice-covered western flank of the Yermak Plateau. In contrast, compounds attributable to a terrestrial source were of only minor importance in terms of absolute concentrations and less variable, but showed increasing relative proportions from an average of 8-14% at and southwards of the MIZ up to 27-33% on the Yermak Plateau and towards the central Arctic Ocean as a consequence of the weakening signal of primary and secondary production. This study provides further insights into the Arctic Ocean carbon dynamics, but also an example of the impact of ocean-currents on the deposition and composition of organic matter.

    Description: Approaches to quantify the organic carbon accumulation on a global scale generally do not consider the small-scale variability of sedimentary and oceanographic boundary conditions along continental margins. In this study, we present a new approach to regionalize the total organic carbon (TOC) content in surface sediments (〈5 cm sediment depth). It is based on a compilation of more than 5500 single measurements from various sources. Global TOC distribution was determined by the application of a combined qualitative and quantitative-geostatistical method. Overall, 33 benthic TOC-based provinces were defined and used to process the global distribution pattern of the TOC content in surface sediments in a 1°x1° grid resolution. Regional dependencies of data points within each single province are expressed by modeled semi-variograms. Measured and estimated TOC values show good correlation, emphasizing the reasonable applicability of the method. The accumulation of organic carbon in marine surface sediments is a key parameter in the control of mineralization processes and the material exchange between the sediment and the ocean water. Our approach will help to improve global budgets of nutrient and carbon cycles.

    Description: During the ARK-XI/1 expedition of R/V Polarstern in July-September 1995 12 samples of aerosols were collected in lower atmosphere layer over the Laptev Sea by filtration of air through AFA-HA filters. Element composition of the samples was determined by instrumental neutron activation analysis. Average atmospheric concentrations of Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Zn and As are higher than in other regions of the Arctic. This can be explained by natural reasons: (1) by input of particles from the surface microlayer of sea water enriched by many chemical elements, (2) by atmospheric transfer of organic matter and lithogenic material from the land, and (3) by resuspension of particles from ice-rafted sediments. In some samples anthropogenic pollution was registered.
