Notizen: Abstract We consider a model of spin-orbit interaction, describing the motion of an oblate satellite rotating about an internal spin-axis and orbiting about a central planet. The resulting second order differential equation depends upon the parameters provided by the equatorial oblateness of the satellite and its orbital eccentricity. Normal form transformations around the main spin-orbit resonances are carried out explicitly. As an outcome, one can compute some invariants; the fact that these quantities are not identically zero is a necessary condition to prove the existence of nearby periodic orbits (Birkhoff fixed point theorem). Moreover, the nonvanishing of the invariants provides also the stability of the spin-orbit resonances, since it guarantees the existence of invariant curves surrounding the periodic orbit.

Notizen: Abstract The addition of B2O3 to a Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 catalyst increased the activity of the catalyst for methanol synthesis after an induction period during the reaction. The stability of the B2O3-containing Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 catalyst was greatly improved by the addition of a small amount of colloidal silica to the catalyst.

Notizen: Abstract Well‐characterized catalyst model compounds of KAlO2 and KFeO2 are investigated by thermal desorption of potassium from the material. The desorbing fluxes of ions, atoms and highly excited states (field ionizable Rydberg states) were studied with surface and field ionization detectors in a vacuum apparatus. From the Arrhenius plots the activation energies for desorption of K and K+ were determined. The chemical state of potassium at the surfaces is concluded to be: ionic on KAlO2 (with the K desorption barrier of 1.76 eV) and covalent on KFeO2 (barrier of 2.73 eV). These results agree with the data obtained earlier for industrial catalysts for ammonia and styrene production. They are interpreted in terms of the Schottky cycle, which is completed for KAlO2 and fails for KFeO2. This failure indicates a non‐equilibrium desorption process. K Rydberg states are only found to desorb from KFeO2, in agreement with the suggestion that such states in some way are responsible for the catalytic activity.

Notizen: Abstract We analyze four-dimensional symplectic mappings in the neighbourhood of an elliptic fixed point whose eigenvalues are close to satisfy a third-order resonance. Using the perturbative tools of resonant normal forms, the geometry of the orbits and the existence of elliptic or hyperbolic one-dimensional tori (fixed lines) is worked out. This allows one to give an analytical estimate of the stability domain when the resonance is unstable. A comparison with numerical results for the four-dimensional Hénon mapping is given.

Notizen: Abstract We investigate the significance of long time stabilty predictions in the light of Nekhoroshev's theory by studying the orbits of artificial satellites. As a simplified model problem we consider the so-called J2problem for an earth's satellite, neglecting luni-solar perturbations and nonconservative effects. We consider a wide range of orbits, excluding those which are too close to the critical inclination. Most of the orbits turn out to be stable for times larger than the estimated age of the solar system, thus proving that, as far as dissipation can be neglected, stability in Nekhoroshev's sense may be effective for physically realistic systems.

Notizen: Abstract We give strong evidence that noncrystalline materials such as quasicrystals or incommensurate solids are not exceptions, but rather are generic in some regions of phase space. We show this by constructing classical lattice-gas models with translation-invariant finite-range interactions and with a unique quasiperiodic ground state which is stable against small perturbations of two-body potentials. More generally, we provide a criterion for stability of nonperiodic ground states.

Notizen: Abstract We propose the critical nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a harmonic potential as a model of attractive Bose–Einstein condensates. By an elaborate mathematical analysis we show that a sharp stability threshold exists with respect to the number of condensate particles. The value of the threshold agrees with the existing experimental data. Moreover with this threshold we prove that a ground state of the condensate exists and is orbital stable. We also evaluate the minimum of the condensate energy.

Notizen: Abstract A new mechanism is proposed for the anomalous tunneling transmittance of a double-barrier quantum-well structure doped with a transition-metal impurity and possessing an intrinsic two-dimensional continuum. The new tunneling channels are due to exponentially-narrow single-particle resonances arising near the edge of a 2D band during tunneling. They are temperature-independent and their contribution to the transmittance can exceed the contribution of the Kondo resonance even at temperatures T〈T K .

We employed this method to investigate the spin polarization of 2DESs in a GaAs/AlGaAs heterojunction for filling factors of the magneticquantization levels 0.28〈ν〈0.9. It is proved that in the presence of states of the fractional quantum Hall effect with ν f =1/3 and 2/3 the ground state of a 2DES with ν〉2/3 is incompletely spin-polarized.

Notizen: Abstract The experimental results of a study of the fine structure of the levels of excitons localized in InAlAs quantum dots in an AlGaAs matrix are reported. Transformations from optical orientation to alignment and from alignment to orientation, which occur due to the exchange splitting of a dipole-active excitonic doublet and are allowed by the low symmetry of a quantum dot, are observed in a longitudinal magnetic field (Faraday geometry). A comparison of theory with experiment for a self-organized ensemble of quantum dots enables a determination of the character of the distribution over the dipole orientations for resonance optical transitions.

Notizen: Abstract Photoluminescence spectra of interwell excitons in double GaAs/AlGaAs quantum wells (n-i-n structures) have been investigated (an interwell exciton in these systems is an electron-hole pair spatially separated by a narrow AlAs barrier). Under resonance excitation by circularly polarized light, the luminescence line of interwell excitons exhibits a significant narrowing and a drastic increase in the degree of circular polarization of photoluminescence with increasing exciton concentration. It is found that the radiative recombination rate significantly increases under these conditions. This phenomenon is observed at temperatures lower than the critical point and can be interpreted in terms of the collective behavior of interwell excitons.

Notizen: Abstract When a voltage is applied to double quantum wells based on AlGaAs/GaAs heterostructures with contact regions (n-i-n structures), a two-dimensional (2D) electron gas appears in one of the quantum wells. Under illumination which generates electron-hole pairs, the photoexcited holes become localized in a neighboring quantum well and recombine radiatively with the 2D electrons (tunneling recombination through the barrier). The appearance, ground-state energy, and density of the degenerate 2D electron gas are determined from the structure of the Landau levels in the luminescence and luminescence excitation spectra as well as from the oscillations of the radiative recombination intensity in a magnetic field with detection directly at the Fermi level. The electron density is regulated by the voltage between the contact regions and increases with the slope of the bands. For a fixed slope of the bands the 2D-electron density has an upper limit determined by the resonance tunneling of electrons into a neighboring quantum well and subsequent direct recombination with photoexcited holes.

Notizen: Abstract The optical orientation of electron spins in heavily doped semiconductor structures with a valence band that is split as a result of size quantization or uniaxial deformation is investigated theoretically. It is shown that lowering the Fermi level by doping and by lowering the temperature should lead to sharp changes in the photon-energy-dependence of the average spin of the excited electrons in structures excited by circularly polarized light. This effect is due to an interchange of the dominant contribution of transitions from a light-hole subband and transitions from the heavy-hole subband in absorption.

Notizen: Abstract Screening of excitonic states by a system of 2D electrons (or holes) in GaAs/AlGaAs single quantum wells is studied. With increasing concentration of 2D charge carriers, a threshold-type disappearance of excitonic states is observed in both luminescence and reflectance spectra. The higher the quality of the 2D system, the lower the corresponding threshold concentration. In the best systems, the collapse of excitonic states occurs at unexpectedly low electron densities n e =5×109 cm−2, which correspond to the mean dimensionless distance between the particles r s =8. This value far exceeds the threshold values observed for 3D systems (r s ≈2), as well as the values obtained for quantum wells in previous studies. The problem of measuring the concentration of low-density 2D charge carriers in photoexcitation conditions is solved by applying the method of optical detection of the dimensional magnetoplasma resonance. This method provides reliable measurements of the density of a 2D system to the values about 109 cm−2.

Notizen: Abstract The possibility of performing single-electron computing without dissipation in an array of tunnel-coupled quantum dots is studied theoretically, taking the spin gate NOT (inverter) as an example. It is shown that the logical operation can be implemented at the stage of unitary evolution of the electron subsystem, although complete switching of the inverter cannot be achieved in a reasonable time at realistic values of model parameters. The optimal input magnetic field is found as a function of the interdot tunneling energy and intradot Coulomb repulsion energy.

Notizen: Abstract The radiative recombination spectra of two-dimensional electrons with free photoexcited holes are investigated for a wide variety of GaAs/ AlGaAs quantum wells, with different thicknesses and electron densities. It is found that for certain, close to integral, filling factors an intense line corresponding to an Auger process — radiative recombination with the emission of an additional magnetoplasmon — appears in the luminescence spectrum. The new line is shifted to lower energies with respect to the zero Landau level, and the magnetic field dependence of the energy splitting between these lines agrees with the theoretical concepts of the dispersion of magnetoplasmon excitations. This makes it possible to estimate the magnetoplasmon energy at the roton minimum.

Notizen: Abstract A new class of collective states, which are assumed to be due to the spontaneous formation of a charge density wave (“striped” phase) upon filling high Landau levels, was recently observed in a 2D electron system based on GaAs/AlGaAs(001). The following unsolved problem is considered in the work: what is the reason for stripe pinning along the crystallographic direction [110]? It is shown that the effective mass of 2D electrons is anisotropic for a single heterojunction (001) A 3 B 5. This natural anisotropy is due to the C 2v symmetry of the heterointerface and, even being weak (0.1%), can govern the stripe direction. A magnetic field parallel to the interface induces “magnetic” anisotropy of effective mass. The competition of these two types of anisotropy (natural and magnetic) provides a quantitative description of the experiment.

Notizen: Abstract We studied a biased superlattice and revealed a considerable current response to irradiation by non-equilibrium acoustic phonons with an effective temperature on the order of a few Kelvins. We discuss two phonon source-superlattice configurations, for which the current response is caused by either interwell or intrawell electron transitions. We have shown that the response is sensitive to both direction and spectral distribution of phonons. The results explain recent experiments on the phonon-induced current response and prove that the superlattices can be used for the characterization of a high-frequency phonon flux.

It was demonstrated that, at temperatures below some critical value (T c ∼30 K) and for an excitation power lying in a certain temperature-dependent range, two metastable charge states with two-dimensional charge densities differing in both magnitude and sign can occur in the system under the same conditions. The obtained experimental data agree well with the mathematical model allowing for the transfer of photoexcited carriers to the barrier followed by their tunneling into QW.

Notizen: Abstract Anomalous intensity fluctuations are observed in the spectrum of radiative ecombination of quasi-two-dimensional (2D) electrons with photoexcited holes in a single quantum well. The fluctuations are observed exclusively under the conditions of the quantum Hall effect (QHE). It is shown that, if the QHE conditions are not fulfilled, the radiation intensity fluctuates strictly following the Poisson distribution 〈δN 2〉/〈N〉= 1), whereas in the QHE regime the fluctuation amplitude increases by several orders of magnitude (〈δ N 2〉/〈N〉∼102). It is demonstrated that the maxima of the emission noise amplitude coincide with the maxima of inverse magnetoresistance of 2D electrons in the QHE regime and correspond to establishing an anomalously high uniformity of the system.

Notizen: Abstract In low-dimensional systems with an asymmetric quantizing potential, an asymmetric electron energy spectrum ε(p)≠ε(−p), where p is the electron momentum, arises in the presence of a magnetic field. A consequence of such an energy spectrum is that momentum transfer to the electron system in mutually opposite directions in the presence of an external perturbation is different. Therefore, in the presence of a standing electromagnetic wave momentum is transferred from the wave to the electrons, which gives rise to a new type of electromotive force.

Notizen: Abstract Dimensional magnetoplasma resonance is observed and studied in a spatially confined, two-dimensional hole system in (001) GaAs/AlGaAs single quantum wells. From the analysis of the field dependence of the magnetoplasma resonance on the diameter of the 2D system, the semiclassical cyclotron hole mass is determined. Its value is found to be equal to 0.26m 0 (m 0 is the free electron mass), which considerably exceeds the theoretically predicted value. A method is proposed for a direct determination of the concentration and mobility of 2D holes from the analysis of the magnetoplasma resonance.

Notizen: Abstract The energy splitting of fundamental localized transverse optical (TO1) phonon modes in GaAs/AlAs superlattices and quantum wires grown by molecular-beam epitaxy on a faceted (311)A GaAs surface is observed by Raman spectroscopy. The form of the Raman scattering tensor makes it possible to observe the TOx and TOy modes separately, using different scattering geometries the y and x axes are the directions of displacement of the atoms and are directed parallel and transverse to the facets on the (311)A surface). Enhancement of the splitting of the TO1x and TO1y modes is observed as the average thickness of the GaAs layers is decreased from 21 to 8.5 Å. The splitting is probably due to the effect of the corrugation of the GaAs/AlAs (311)A hetero-interface on the properties of localized phonon modes.

Notizen: Abstract It is shown that the characteristic features of the chemical potential for 2D electrons in a magnetic field, which lead to sharp dips in the magnetic field dependence of the capacitance of a 2D system, also affect the electrostatic potential distribution in the direction of the transport current flowing through a 2D Corbino disk under conditions of integral magnetic filling factor. The associated details of the temperature dependence of the electrostatic potential distribution, the distances to the screening electron, and the transport potential difference at the Corbino edges are investigated. The possibilities of experimentally observing these features of the electrostatic potential distribution along a Corbino disk with a transport current under conditions of the quantum Hall effect are discussed.

Notizen: Abstract We developed the theory of Coulomb drag current induced in a one-dimensional nanowire by the ballistic nonohmic current in a nearby parallel nanowire under the ballistic transport regime. As in the ohmic case, we predict sharp oscillations of the drag current as a function of gate voltage or chemical potential of electrons. We also study the dependence of drag current on the voltage V across the driving wire. For relatively large values of V, the drag current is proportional to V 2.

Notizen: Abstract For a ballistic ring interferometer based on high-mobility two-dimensional electron gas in an AlGaAs/GaAs heterojunction, the electrostatic potential and the energy spectrum are determined. It is shown that the splitting points in such an interferometer have the form of triangular potential wells. Calculation is performed for the two-dimensional electron transmission through the ring, and the Fano resonances caused by the coupling of the transmitted waves with the levels of higher transverse modes in triangular wells are predicted. These resonances are observed in the experiment.

Notizen: Abstract Interaction of two localized impurity states of Si atoms at a GaAs surface was studied by scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. The effects of a twofold “switching” on and off of the states of each of the interacting atoms, the tunneling-interaction-induced mutual level pulling of these states, and the level stabilization near E F were observed. These effects are explained in terms of the extended Anderson model.

Notizen: Abstract Nonlinear interaction of an intense surface acoustic wave (SAW) with a 2D electron-hole plasma generated by light in a semiconductor quantum well near a piezoelectric crystal is investigated. It is shown that, in a strongly nonlinear regime, the acoustoelectric interaction is enhanced because of the accumulation of carriers in the field of an intense SAW. In addition, in a strongly nonlinear regime, the dissipation of the acoustic wave energy increases and the sound velocity decreases. These dependences fundamentally differ from those observed in a unipolar plasma. For high sound intensities, analytical results are obtained.

Notizen: Abstract Using a heating rate of 2°C min−1, CaS reacts with oxygen in air from 700°C to form CaSO4, with a complete conversion at 1100°C. Synthesis of CaS from the reaction between CaSO4 containing compounds and carbon compounds in air would not be possible, as the carbon reacts from 600°C with oxygen in the air to give CO2. Heating stoichiometric amounts of carbon and pure CaSO4, synthetic gypsum or phosphogypsum in a nitrogen atmosphere, results in the formation of CaS from 850°C. Using a heating rate of 10°C min−1, the formation of CaS is completed at 1080°C. Addition of 5% Fe2O3 as a catalyst lowers the starting temperature of the reaction to 750°C. Activation energy values at different fraction reaction values (α) differ between 340 and 400 kJ mol−1. The relationship between the activation energy values and conversion (α) indicates that the reaction proceeds via multiple steps.

Notizen: Abstract The thermal properties and devitrification behaviour of substituted InF3 glasses were studied by means of differential thermal analysis. A comparison of various simple quantitative methods to assess the level of stability of multicomponent fluoride glass systems was also made. Most of these methods are based on critical temperatures. In this paper, a new parameter,k d(T), is introduced to the stability criteria. The stabilities of several substituted InF3 glasses were evaluated experimentally and correlated with the activation energies of crystallization via this new kinetic criterion and compared with those evaluated by other criteria.

Notizen: Abstract We modified the isolation procedure of muscle and heart mitochondria. In human muscle, this resulted in a 3.4 fold higher yield of better coupled mitochondria in half the isolation time. In a preparation from rat muscle we studied factors that affected the stability of oxidative phosphorylation (oxphos) and found that it decreased by shaking the preparation on a Vortex machine, by exposure to light and by an increase in storage temperature. The decay was found to be different for each substrate tested. The oxidation of ascorbate was most stable and less sensitive to the treatments. When mitochondria were stored in the dark and the cold, the decrease in oxidative phosphorylation followed first order kinetics. In individual preparations of muscle and heart mitochondria, protection of oxidative phosphorylation was found by adding candidate stabilizers, such as desferrioxamine, lazaroids, taurine, carnitine, phosphocreatine, N-acetylcysteine, Trolox-C and ruthenium red, implying a role for reactive oxygen species and calcium-ions in the in vitro damage at low temperature to oxidative phosphorylation. In heart mitochondria oxphos with pyruvate and palmitoylcarnitine was most labile followed by glutamate, succinate and ascorbate. We studied the effect of taurine, hypotaurine, carnitine, and desferrioxamine on the decay of oxphos with these substrates. 1 mM taurine (n = 6) caused a significant protection of oxphos with pyruvate, glutamate and palmitoylcarnitine, but not with the other substrates. 5 mM L-carnitine (n = 6), 1 mM hypotaurine (n = 3) and 0.1 mM desferrioxamine (n = 3) did not protect oxphos with any of the substrates at a significant level. These experiments were undertaken in the hope that the in vitro stabilizers can be used in future treatment of patients with defects in oxidative phosphorylation. (Mol Cell Biochem 174: 61–66, 1997)

Notizen: Abstract For improving chemical and thermal stability of γ -Al2O3 membranes boehmite (AlOOH) sol-particles are coated with Zr4+-species with two techniques. These techniques are heterogeneous precipitation (HP-method) and “surface-reaction-followed-by-polycondensation” (SRPC-method). A continuous coating layer is formed at relative low Zr4+-concentration, about one monolayer coverage of boehmite particles, and with the HP-method. For larger concentrations and for the SRPC-method small particles (order 1 nm) of Zr4+-species are formed on the surface of the boehmite particles. After drying and calcination up to 1000°C no continuous layer of a zirconia phase could be detected for all samples. However the thermal stability of the porous structure is improved. Phase transitions of alumina occur at temperatures of 1100°C and the porous structure of the membrane material is then destabilized.

Notizen: Abstract The effects of exogenously added Ca2+ on the enzymatic activity and structural stability of methanol dehydrogenase were studied for various Ca2+ concentrations. Methanol dehydrogenase activity increased significantly with increasing concentration of Ca2+, approaching saturation at 200 mM Ca2+. The effect of Ca2+ on the activation of MDH was time dependent and Ca2+ specific and was due to binding of the metal ions to the enzyme. Addition of increasing concentration of Ca2+ caused a decrease of the intrinsic tryptophan fluorescence intensity in a concentration-dependent manner to a minimum at 200 mM, but with no change in the fluorescence emission maximum wavelength or the CD spectra. The results revealed that the activation of methanol dehydrogenase by Ca2+ occurred concurrently with the conformational change. In addition, exogenously bound Ca2+ destabilized MDH. The potential biological significance of these results is discussed.

Notizen: Abstract This paper studies interactions of pipe and fluid and deals with bifurcations of a cantilevered pipe conveying a steady fluid, clamped at one end and having a nozzle subjected to nonlinear constraints at the free end. Either the nozzle parameter or the flow velocity is taken as a variable parameter. The discrete equations of the system are obtained by the Ritz-Galerkin method. The static stability is studied by the Routh criteria. The method of averaging is employed to examine the analytical results and the chaotic motions. Three critical values are given. The first one makes the system lose the static stability by pitchfork bifurcation. The second one makes the system lose the dynamical stability by Hopf bifurcation. The third one makes the periodic motions of the system lose the stability by doubling-period bifurcation.

Notizen: Abstract The coexisting periodic impacting motions and their multiplicity of a kind of dual component systems under harmonic excitation are analytically derived. The stability condition of a periodic impacting motion is given by analyzing the propagation of small, arbitrary perturbation from that motion. In numerical simulations, the periodic impacting motions are classified according to the system states before and after an impact. The numerical results show that there exist many types of vibro-impacts and the bifurcation of periodic vibro-impacts is not smooth.

Notizen: Abstract A second-order accurate numerical method has been proposed for the solution of a coupled non-linear oscillator featuring in chemical kinetics. Although implicit by construction, the method enables the solution of the model initial-value problem (IVP) to be computed explicitly. The second-order method is constructed by taking a linear combination of first-order methods. The stability analysis of the system suggests the existence of a Hopf bifurcation, which is confirmed by the numerical method. Both the critical point of the continuous system and the fixed point of the numerical method will be seen to have the same stability properties. The second-order method is more competitive in terms of numerical stability than some well-known standard methods (such as the Runge–Kutta methods of order two and four).

Notizen: Abstract In recent years, a number of workers have studied the stability of deep lakes such as Lake Tanganyika, Lake Baikal and Lake Malawi. In this paper, the methods that can be used to determine the effect that the components of lakes have on the equation of state are examined. The PVT properties of Lakes have been determined by using apparent molal volume data for the major ionic components of the lake. The estimated PVT properties (densities, expansibility and compressibilities) of the lakes are found to be in good agreement with the PVT properties (P) of seawater diluted to the same salinity. This is similar to earlier work that showed that the PVT properties of rivers and estuarine waters could also be estimated from the properties of seawater. The measured densities of Lake Tanganyika were found to be in good agreement (± 2 × 10-6 g cm-3) with the values estimated from partial molal properties and the values of seawater at the same total salinity (ST = 0.568‰). The increase in the densities of Lake Tanganyika waters increased due to changes in the composition of the waters. The measured increase in the measured density (45 × 10-6 g cm-3) is in good agreement (46 × 10-6 g cm-3) with the values calculated for the increase in Na+, HCO3 -, Mg2+, Ca2+ and Si(OH)4. Methods are described that can be used to determine the conductivity salinity of lakes using the equations developed for seawater. By combining these relationships with apparent molal volume data, one can relate the PVT properties of the lake to those of seawater.

Notizen: Abstract Purpose. The development of a sustained release formulation for recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) as well as other proteins requires that the protein be stable at physiological conditions during its in vivo lifetime. Poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) microspheres may provide an excellent sustained release formulation for proteins, if protein stability can be maintained. Methods. rhGH was encapsulated in PLGA microspheres using a double emulsion process. Protein released from the microspheres was assessed by several chromatrographic assays, circular dichroism, and a cell-based bioassay. The rates of aggregation, oxidation, diketopiperazine formation, and deamidation were then determined for rhGH released from PLGA microspheres and rhGH in solution (control) during incubation in isotonic buffer, pH 7.4 and 37°C. Results. rhGH PLGA formulations were produced with a low initial burst (〈20%) and a continuous release of rhGH for 30 days. rhGH was released initially from PLGA microspheres in its native form as measured by several assays. In isotonic buffer, pH 7.4 and 37°C, the rates of rhGH oxidation, diketopiperazine formation, and deamidation in the PLGA microspheres were equivalent to the rhGH in solution, but aggregation (dimer formation) occured at a slightly faster rate for protein released from the PLGA microspheres. This difference in aggregation rate was likely due to the high protein concentration used in the encapsulation process. The rhGH released was biologically active throughout the incubation at these conditions which are equivalent to physiological ionic strength and pH. Conclusions. rhGH was successfully encapsulated and released in its fully bioactive form from PLGA microspheres over 30 days. The chemical degradation rates of rhGH were not affected by the PLGA microspheres, indicating that the internal environment of the microspheres was similar to the bulk solution. After administration, the microspheres should become fully hydrated in the subcutaneous space and should experience similar isotonic conditions and pH. Therefore, if a protein formulation provides stability in isotonic buffer, pH 7.4 and 37°C, it should allow for a safe and efficacious sustained release dosage form in PLGA microspheres.

Notizen: Abstract Purpose. The solubility and physical stability of human Insulin-like Growth Factor I (hIGF-I) were studied in aqueous solutions with different excipients. Methods. The solubility of hIGF-I was determined by UV-absorption and quantification of light blocking particles. The physical stability of hIGF-I was studied with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy. Results. Human IGF-I precipitated at low temperature in the presence of 140 mM benzyl alcohol and 145 mM sodium chloride. CD data showed that the tertiary structure of hIGF-I during these conditions was perturbed compared to that in 5 mM phosphate buffer. In the presence of benzyl alcohol 290 mM mannitol stabilized hIGF-I. Sodium chloride or mannitol by themselves had no effect on either the solubility or the tertiary structure. Benzyl alcohol was attracted to hIGF-I, whereas sodium chloride was preferentially excluded. The attraction of benzyl alcohol was reinforced by sodium chloride leading to salting-out of hIGF-I. The CD-data indicated interactions of benzyl alcohol with phenylalanine in hIGF-I. Thermal denaturation of hIGF-I occurred in all solutions with sodium chloride, whereas mannitol or benzyl alcohol had no effect on the thermal stability. The thermal stability of hlGF-I was thus decreased in 145 mM sodium chloride although it was excluded from hIGF-I. Conclusions. The self-association and thermal aggregation of hIGF-I is driven by hydrophobic interactions. Benzyl alcohol is attracted to hIGF-I and induces changes in the tertiary structure causing hydrophobic attraction of the protein at low temperatures.

Notizen: Abstract  The characteristics of poly(oxyethylene) hydrogenated caster oil ether (HCO-10) vesicles were studied for the standpoints of encapsulation efficiency, stability, solubilization and permeability or barrier efficiency. The vesicles of 5% HCO-10 had 6.24% of calcein-entrapment efficiency and 240 nm of mean diameter. The stability of HCO-10 vesicle suspensions was dependent on their concentrations. In the vesicle suspensions of 10% HCO-10 or more, both the size of the vesicles and the fluidity of the suspensions obviously varied with incubation time, indicating that a flocculation occurred; whereas, the vesicle suspension of 5% HCO-10 was relatively stable. The solubilization process of HCO-10 vesicles by SDS was similar to that of EggPC liposomes. The rate constants for permeation of Cl ion and calcein were 2.46×10-3 s-1 and 5.79×10-5 s-1, respectively, suggesting that HCO-10 vesicles possessed some barrier potential for Cl ion and calcein although they were smaller than those of liposomes. Furthermore, the efflux of the solute such as calcein from HCO-10 vesicles was maximum at 37 °C, where the vesicle membrane was presumably destabilized by dehydration of EOs in HCO-10 molecules.

Notizen: Abstract The effect of urea on the stability of α-haematite hydrosols in the presence of various monovalent ions was studied on each side of the pzc (pH 8.2) by measurements of the critical coagulation concentration (CCC) of the hydrosol. It was observed that for pHs lower than the pzc, the effect of urea depends strongly on the nature of coagulating ion and on the pH:The CCC values of IO 3 − increases with urea concentrations but those of ClO 4 − and Cl− decreases. For pHs higher than the pzc, an inversion of the cationic adsorption sequence was observed. This behavior is in a good agreement with the well-known action of urea on the structure of water and also with the general property of the α-haematite water interface.

Notizen: Abstract Low Reynolds number flow of Newtonian and viscoelastic Boger fluids past periodic square arrays of cylinders with a porosity of 0.45 and 0.86 has been studied. Pressure drop measurements along the flow direction as a function of flow rate as well as flow visualization has been performed to investigate the effect of fluid elasticity on stability of this class of flows. It has been shown that below a critical Weissenberg number (Wec), the flow in both porosity cells is a two-dimensional steady flow, however, pressure fluctuations appear above Wec which is 2.95±0.25 for the 0.45 porosity cell and 0.95±0.08 for the higher porosity cell. Specifically, in the low porosity cell as the Weissenberg number is increased above Wec a transition between a steady two-dimensional to a transient three-dimensional flow occurs. However, in the high porosity cell a transition between a steady two-dimensional to a steady three-dimensional flow consisting of periodic cellular structures along the length of the cylinder in the space between the first and the second cylinder occurs while past the second cylinder another transition to a transient three-dimensional flow occurs giving rise to time- dependent cellular structures of various wavelengths along the length of the cylinder. Overall, the experiments indicate that viscoelastic flow past periodic arrays of cylinders of various porosities is susceptible to purely elastic instabilities. Moreover, the instability observed in lower porosity cells where a vortex is present between the cylinders in the base flow is amplifieds spatially, that is energy from the mean flow is continuously transferred to the disturbance flow along the flow direction. This instability gives rise to a rapid increase in flow resistance. In higher porosity cells where a vortex between the cylinders is not present in the base flow, the energy associated with the disturbance flow is not greatly changed along the flow direction past the second cylinder. In addition, it has been shown that in both flow cells the instability is a sensitive function of the relaxation time of the fluid. Hence, the instability in this class of flows is a strong function of the base flow kinematics (i.e., curvature of streamlines near solid surfaces), We and the relaxation time of the fluid.

Notizen: Abstract The one-dimensional reaction-diffusion equations for the process (D) $$A + B \to 2A,B + C \to 2B,C + A \to 2C$$ are extended to include the counteracting reactions (R) $$A + 2B \to 3B,B + 2C \to 3C,C + 2A \to 3A$$ which have a reaction rate α relative to the direct process (D). This process can be seen as a three-component version of the reaction which is described by the Fisher-Kolmogorov equation. The fixed points of the equations are studied as a function of α. It is shown that the equations admit solutions which consist of a series of traveling fronts. Other solutions exist which are traveling periodic waves. A very remarkable fact is that for these waves exact expressions can be constructed.

Notizen: Abstract The dynamical stability of a homogeneous, simple supported column, subjected to a periodic axial force, is investigated. The viscoelastic material is assumed to obey the Leaderman nonlinear constitutive relation. The equation of motion was derived as a nonlinear integro-partial-differential equation, and was simplified into a nonlinear integro-differential equation by the Galerkin method. The averaging method was employed to carry out the stability analysis. Numerical results are presented to compare with the analytical ones. Numerical results also indicate that chaotic motion appears.

Notizen: Abstract The governing equation of solid-liquid couple vibration of pipe conveying fluid on the elastic foundation was derived. The critical velocity and complex frequency of pipe conveying fluid on Winkler elastic foundation and two-parameter foundation were calculated by power series method. Compared with pipe without considering elastic foundation, the numerical results show that elastic foundation can increase the critical flow velocity of static instability and dynamic instability of pipe. And the increase of foundation parameters may increase the critical flow velocity of static instability and dynamic instability of pipe, thereby delays the occurrence of divergence and flutter instability of pipe. For higher mass ratio β, in the combination of certain foundation parameters, pipe behaves the phenomenon of restabilization and redivergence after the occurrence of static instability, and then coupled-mode flutter takes place.

Notizen: Abstract The spatial stability equation of moving jet containing dense suspended solid particles was derived out by means of the continuum phase-coupled model. The stability curves of moving jet for different downstream distances, Reynolds number of flow-field, particle properties and velocities of jetting device are got by the finite difference method based on the asymptotic method and the Eulerian conservative difference scheme. Founded on the analysis of the obtained stability curves it is found that the positive velocity of jetting device widens the unstable frequency range of flow-field but the effect of the negative one is contrary. In addition, particles existing in the flow-field curb the instability of flow-field and the effect enhances with the decrease of Reynolds number of flow-field. These conclusions benefit learning the development of moving two-phase jet.

Notizen: Abstract By adopting the energy method, a new method to calculate the stability of the composite shell of revolution is presented. This method takes the influence of nonlinear prebuckling deformations and stresses on the buckling of the shell into account. The relationships between the prebuckling deformations and strains are calculated by nonlinear Kármán equations. The numerical method is used to calculate the energy of the total system. The nonlinear equations are solved by combining gradient method and amendatory Newton iterative method. The computer program is also developed. An example is given to demonstrate the accuracy of the method presented.

Notizen: Abstract The recursive least square is widely used in parameter identification. But it is easy to bring about the phenomena of parameters burst-off. A convergence analysis of a more stable identification algorithm-recursive damped least square is proposed. This is done by normalizing the measurement vector entering into the identification algorithm. It is shown that the parametric distance converges to a zero mean random variable. It is also shown that under persistent excitation condition, the condition number of the adaptation gain matrix is bounded, and the variance of the parametric distance is bounded.

Notizen: Abstract Selective catalytic reduction of NOx by propene has been investigated on Pt-USY and compared to other Pt-catalysts. The catalyst was characterized by XRD, Ar adsorption at 87 K, TEM, and CO chemisorption, and tested in a gas mixture system in excess oxygen. Pt-USY shows an excellent activity in the reaction, with a molar NOx conversion of 90% at 475 K. Stability during time-on-stream and resistance to SO2 and H2O in the feed stream has also been investigated. Pt-USY performs better under lean-burn conditions than other Pt-catalysts on ZSM-5, Al2O3, or SiO2. The selectivity to N2 was similar for all the catalysts (∼30%), the other major product being N2O.

Notizen: Abstract Purpose. PNU-67590A is a water-soluble micellar prodrug of methyl-prednisolone (MP). The major products of degradation of PNU-67590A are MP by hydrolysis and methylprednisolone 17-suleptanate (17-E) by 21 → 17 acyl migration. The effect of ionic strength on micelle formation and stability of PNU-67590A in aqueous solution was examined. Methods. PNU-67590A solutions at pH 2 and 8 and ionic strength of 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, and 0.4 M were maintained at 25°C in the dark to measure MP and 17-E levels over time. Results. The rate of degradation of micellar PNU-67590A at pH 8 was less than that of monomeric PNU-67590A, and vice versa at pH 2. Increase in ionic strength decreased both the critical micelle concentration of PNU-67590A and the degradation of micelle PNU-67590A at both pHs, resulting in improved overall stability of PNU-67590A. Conclusions. Formulation of PNU-67590A in a concentrated solution with high ionic strength will maximize stability and shelf-life.

Notizen: Abstract Purpose. Paclitaxel is currently administered i.v. as a slow infusion of asolution of the drug in an ethanol:surfactant:saline admixture. However, poor solubilization and toxicity are associated with this drug therapy.Alternative drug delivery systems, including parenteral emulsions, areunder development in recent years to reduce drug toxicity, improveefficacy and eliminate premedication. Methods. Paclitaxel emulsions were prepared by high-shearhomogenization. The particle size of the emulsions was measured by dynamiclight scattering. Drug concentration was quantified by HPLC and invitro drug release was monitored by membrane dialysis. The physicalstability of emulsions was monitored by particle size changes in boththe mean droplet diameter and 99% cumulative distribution. Paclitaxelpotency and changes in the concentration of known degradants wereused as chemical stability indicators. Single dose acute toxicity studieswere conducted in healthy mice and efficacy studies in B16 melanomatumor-bearing mice. Results. QW8184, a physically and chemically stable sub-micronoil-in-water (o/w) emulsion of paclitaxel, can be prepared at high drugloading (8-10 mg/mL) having a mean droplet diameter of 〈100 nmand 99% cumulative particle size distribution of 〈200 nm. In vitro release studies demonstrated low and sustained drug release both inthe presence and absence of human serum albumin. Based on singledose acute toxicity studies, QW8184 is well tolerated both in miceand rats with about a 3-fold increase in the maximum-tolerated-dose(MTD) over the current marketed drug formulation. Using the B16mouse melanoma model, a significant improvement in drug efficacywas observed with QW8184 over Taxol®. Conclusions. QW8184, a stable sub-micron o/w emulsion of paclitaxelhas been developed that can be filter-sterilized and administered i.v.as a bolus dose. When compared to Taxol®, this emulsion exhibitedreduced toxicity and improved efficacy most likely due to thecomposition and dependent physicochemical characteristics of the emulsion.

Notizen: Abstract Purpose. To investigate the effect of atomization conditions on particle size and stability of spray-freeze dried protein. Methods. Atomization variables were explored for excipient-free (no zinc added) and zinc-complexed bovine serum albumin (BSA). Particle size was measured by laser diffraction light scattering following sonication in organic solvent containing poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLG). Powder surface area was determined from the N2 vapor sorption isotherm. Size-exclusion chromatography (SEC) was used to assess decrease in percent protein monomer. Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy was employed to estimate protein secondary structure. PLG microspheres were made using a non-aqueous, cryogenic process and release of spray-freeze dried BSA was assessed in vitro. Results. The most significant atomization parameter affecting particle size was the mass flow ratio (mass of atomization N2 relative to that for liquid feed). Particle size was inversely related to specific surface area and the amount of protein aggregates formed. Zinc-complexation reduced the specific surface area and stabilized the protein against aggregation. FTIR data indicated perturbations in secondary structure upon spray-freeze drying for both excipient-free and zinc-complexed protein. Conclusions. Upon sonication, spray-freeze dried protein powders exhibited friability, or susceptibility towards disintegration. For excipient-free protein, conditions where the mass flow ratio was 〉 ∼0.3 yielded sub-micron powders with relatively large specific surface areas. Reduced particle size was also linked to a decrease in the percentage of protein monomer upon drying. This effect was ameliorated by zinc-complexation, via a mechanism involving reduction in specific surface area of the powder rather than stabilization of secondary structure. Reduction of protein particle size was beneficial in reducing the initial release (burst) of the protein encapsulated in PLG microspheres.

Notizen: Abstract The influence of cyclodextrins (CDs) on the chemical stability of the contraceptive steroid progestin, ST1435, in aqueous solution has been studied using reversed phase high performance liquid chromatography. The effects of CD structure, temperature, and CD concentration on the rate of degradation were investigated. It was found that the drug degraded to different extents following a pseudo-first order reaction mechanism. The presence of the host molecules affected the degradation rate as a result of complexation which might result in protection of the labile moiety of the drug molecule against degradation. Hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD) and hydroxyethyl-β-cyclodextrin (HE-β-CD) retarded the degradation in contrast to β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) which accelerated the steroid degradation. The stabilizing action of HP-β-CD is larger than that of HE-β-CD. The degradation rate increased upon increasing temperature and the Arrhenius equation is valid. Lineweaver-Burk equation analysis indicated that the steroid included inside the CD cavity degraded three times more slowly than did the free ST1435 in solution. This equation further supported the formation of a 1 : 1 inclusion complex between ST1435 and HP-β-CD with a stability constant of 934.5 M-1 at 65°C.

Notizen: Abstract The problem of instability of a hyperelastic, thick-walled cylindrical tube was first studied by Wilkes [1] in 1955. The solution was formulated within the framework of the theory of small deformations superimposed on large homogeneous deformations for the general class of incompressible, isotropic materials; and results for axially symmetrical buckling were obtained for the neo-Hookean material. The solution involves a certain quadratic equation whose characteristic roots depend on the material response functions. For the neo-Hookean material these roots always are positive. In fact, here we show for the more general Mooney–Rivlin material that these roots always are positive, provided the empirical inequalities hold. In a recent study [2] of this problem for a class of internally constrained compressible materials, it is observed that these characteristic roots may be real-valued, pure imaginary, or complex-valued. The similarity of the analytical structure of the two problems, however, is most striking; and this similarity leads one to question possible complex-valued solutions for the incompressible case. Some remarks on this issue will be presented and some new results will be reported, including additional results for both the neo-Hookean and Mooney–Rivlin materials.

Notizen: Abstract Intracranial saccular aneurysms remain an enigma; it is not known why they form, why they enlarge, or why only some of them rupture. Nonetheless, there is general agreement that mechanics plays an essential role in each aspect of the natural history of these potentially deadly lesions. In this paper, we review recent findings that discount limit point instabilities under quasi-static increases in pressure and resonance under dynamic loading as possible mechanisms of enlargement of saccular aneurysms. Indeed, recent histopathological data suggest that aneurysms enlarge due to a stress-mediated process of growth and remodeling of collagen, the primary load-bearing constituent within the wall. We submit that advanced theoretical, experimental, and numerical studies of this process are essential to further progress in treating this class of pathologies. The purpose of this review is to provide background and direction that encourages elasticians to contribute to this important area of research.
