Notes: Abstract In d-wave superconductors, the electronic density of states (DOS) induced by a vortex exhibits a divergence at low energies: N vortex(E) ∼1/|E|. This divergence is the result of gap nodes in the spectrum of excitation outside the vortex core. The heat capacity in two regimes, T 2/T c 2 ≫ B/B c 2 and T 2/T c 2 ≪ B/B c 2, is discussed.

Notes: Abstract An explanation is proposed for the fishtail effect observed in the magnetic hysteresis loops of high-T c superconductors. It is shown that anisotropy of the pinning and curvature of the flux lines in the sample are sufficient for this effect to appear. The design of experiments for checking the proposed explanation is discussed.

Notes: Abstract The Fermi and Bose quasiparticle spectrum in copper oxides is studied in a many-band p-d model taking account of the strong electronic correlations. It is shown that hole-doped systems possess a Bose mode — a spin exciton — which is associated with the singlet-triplet excitation of the two-hole ground-state term of CuO4 clusters. Intercluster hopping leads to fermion-boson interaction with a spin exciton as the intermediate boson. Such a mechanism does not exist for n-type systems.

Notes: Abstract A model with an attractive potential in the s and d channels is studied. It is found that in a definite interval of the ratio of the s and d components of the potential the model undergoes a second-order phase transition from the d to the (s±id) state, with breaking of time-reversal symmetry. The transition temperature and the jump in the specific heat are calculated.

Notes: Abstract Several new copper oxychlorides with the K2NiF4-type and related structures (the 02(n-1)n where n=1, 2 and 3, and the 0222 structures) are synthesized using a high pressure technique. These are (Ca,K)2CuO2Cl2 (Tc = 24 K), Ba2CuO2Cl2 for the 0201; (Sr,Ca)3Cu2O4+δCl2−y (Tc = 80 K) for the 0212; (Sr,Ca)4Cu3O6+δCl2−y (Tc = 46 K) for the 0223; CaLnCuO3Cl (Ln=Y, Ho, Er) for the 0222. Hole carrier doping to induce superconductivity and size tuning of the CuO2 sheet are attained in these new oxychlorides.

Notes: Abstract We performed X-ray diffraction and neutron scattering experiments on high quality single crystals of La1.85Sr0.15CuO4. We found a forbidden (1,0,0) peak, which develops below the HTT-LTO structural transition temperature, and an anomalous behavior of acoustic phonon at (2,2,0). These results indicate that the structural anomaly has a strong relation with an superconductivity.

Notes: Abstract The “washboard frequency” ω of the moving vortex lattice in untwinned YBa2 Cu3 O6.93 may be observed through mode-locking to an externally applied ac current of frequency ωext. The interference between ω and ωext results in jumps in the dc current-voltage characteristics when ω and ωext are harmonically related1. The interference effect disappears in the vortex liquid state. The Hall conductivity σxy below Tc in YBCO contains contributions2 from a positive quasiparticle (qp) term (∼H) and a negative vortex term (∼1/H). The qp term is surprisingly large well below Tc and implies a large gap anisotropy and a long qp mean free path (mfp). The thermal Hall effect3 κxy is closely related to the qp σxy; κxy is produced by asymmetric scattering of qp by pinned vortices. The qp mfp at H = 0, extracted from σxy and extended to low T by κxy, increases remarkably from 90 Å at Tc to more than 0.5μm at 22 K.

Notes: Abstract Experimental studies of local structure by pulsed neutron PDF analysis on manganites and cuprates suggest that these oxides are locally distorted due to a strong electron-lattice interaction, and charge carriers organize themselves most likely into a tweed-like state. Measurements by inelastic neutron scattering as well as calculations on the Hubbard model show that the electron-lattice interaction is strongest at the zone boundaries, enhanced by phonon-induced spin-correlations. Such a strong electron-lattice interaction must be the origin of these local distortions, and may form the basis for the microscopic mechanism of superconductivity.

Notes: Abstract We report tunneling measurements of the electron-doped superconductor Nd1.85Ce0.15Cu04−gd using break junctions. The observed finest gap structure is well expressed by the BCS density of states with the energy gap of Δ = 6.1 meV and a very small broadening parameter, having the ratio 2Δ/kBTc = 8.2 with Tc = 17.3 K. These features are similar to our tunneling results for the hole-doped cuprate superconductors. Therefore we find no essential difference in the gap structure, in spite of a common believing of the pairingsymmetry difference between them.

Notes: Abstract The spectrum of the 2D t-J model is shown to change drastically due to transitions from the long-range to short-range antiferromagnetic order at the hole concentration x ≈ 0.04 and from the short-range order to a completely disordered paramagnetic state at x ≈ 0.19. In the region 0.04 ≲ x ≲ 0.19 the obtained shape of the Fermi surface, the hole dispersion near the Fermi level, and the density of states on it are in satisfactory agreement with experiment in Bi2212. Based on the obtained spectral functions the Eliashberg formalism is used for calculating Tc. The hole-magnon interaction alone is found to be unable to give rise to superconductivity. By adding a moderate interaction with apex oxygen vibrations high Tc are obtained for even frequency $$d_{x^2 - y^2 }$$ pairing in the range 0.04 ≲ x ≲ 0.17. For larger hole concentrations the odd frequency s-wave solution becomes the leading one which can result in s-wave superconductivity in the overdoped regime with the participation of a hole-phonon interaction of the respective symmetry.

Notes: Abstract We have solved the generalized Eliashberg equations for the 2D Hubbard model with interactions due to exchange of antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations and harmonic phonons. We calculate the supression of Tc for d-wave superconductivity, the isotope exponent α, and the resitivity ϱ with different models for the phonon interaction α2F(q, ω). The smallest Tc supression and the largest α values are obtained for interactions which are enhanced atq = 0. At lower temperatures the spin-fluctuation interaction is strongly reduced by the phonon interaction due to feed-back effects. We compare our results with the experimental data on high-Tc superconductors.

Notes: Abstract The far- and mid-infrared spectrum of antiferromagnetic YBa2Cu3O6.0 was investigated by infrared transmission measurements (→k∥c-axis) in high magnetic fields up to 16.5Tesla at T=1K. A peak at 1436cm −1 which previously was assigned to the excitation of single optical magnons did not show a measurable shift with magnetic field. In the far-infrared, no signature of acoustic magnon absorption has been observed in the magneto transmittance. However, at 83 cm−1 the sixth phonon of symmetry Eu in YBa2 Cu3 O6.0 has been found.

Notes: Abstract Superconducting thin films of HgBa2CuO4 have been grown in situ by using a sputtering method for the first time. (100) SrTiO3 was used as substrates and heated between 500 ° C to 600 ° C during the film deposition. By setting the deposition conditions properly, c axis oriented HgBa2CuO4 films were grown perpendicularly to the substrate surface. It was found that Hg composition in the deposited films had close relation to the sputtering gas, namely, the oxygen partial pressure, Hg could remain in the film when the partial pressure of oxygen was lower than in the case of the other oxide superconductors such as Bi cuprates. The optimum oxygen partial pressure for the crystallized thin film ranged from 0.1 Pa to 0.01 Pa with total gas pressure of 0.6 Pa. The superconducting transition was observed at around 75K.

Notes: Abstract We have recently synthesized new superconducting cuprates containing a mercury-based bilayer, i.e. (Hg,Tl)2Ba2(Ca,Y)Cu2Oy and (Hg1−x Tlx)2Ba2 Can−1 CunOy (x ∼ 0.4, n = 3,4) by a high-pressure technique. These compounds are the n=2, 3 and 4 members of a new homologous series, (Hg, Tl)-22(n−1)n. The effects of Tl substitution for Hg on the formation and superconductivity of the (Hg, Tl)-2223 and -2234 phases are investigated. Both the phases are stabilized for the Tl content x of 0.3–0.6. Tc of the as-synthesized (Hg,Tl)-2223 compound increases from 45 K to 81 K with an increase in x. In contrast, Tc of the (Hg,Tl)-2234 compound is almost independent of x (∼114 K).

Notes: Abstract Measurements of the temperature (T) dependence of the planar63Cu nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate (1/T1)for the63Cu-enriched high-Tc Cu oxides, La2−xSrxCuO4 (x=0.13 and 0.18; Tc∼34K), are reported. 1/T1T shows a maximum around 50 K, similar to that for V2O3 under a high pressure and for the bilayered high-Tc Cu oxides. The T-dependent anisotropy of 1/T1 suggests that the T-dependent antiferromagnetic correlation length ξ can explain the peaked T-dependence of 1/T1T.

Notes: Abstract The pairing state of the cuprate superconductors is a key issue in understanding experiments and in clarifying possible mechanisms. A wide range of experiments now show that the gap function is predominantly $$d_{x^2 - y^2 }$$ in character. Here we discuss the relevant experiments, especially focusing on those which provide constraints on possible mixed pairing states, such as s+d and s+id.

Notes: Abstract We study the critical temperature of s + d−wave superconductors as a function of impurity concentration using a s + d−wave model which is based on anisotropic Eliashberg equations. A spin fluctuation spectrum, is responsible for the d-wave coupling, while a simple Einstein spectrum, is used to describe the s-wave coupling. It is also possible to study within this model how the two pairing mechanisms influence each other. The results are in good qualitative agreement with experiment.

Notes: Abstract We have investigated the anisotropic quasiparticle conductivity in the superconducting state for microwave frequencies in YBa2Cu3O7−δ (YBCO) and La2−xSrxCuO4 (LSCO) with several hole concentrations. Common features were found for YBCO and LSCO. That is, in underdoped materials, the strong two dimensional nature was found to be retained even below Tc. On the other hand, in optimally doped and overdoped materials, the anisotropy decreases rapidly below Tc. In particular, in YBCO, it is suggested that the c-axis transport becomes coherent below Tc.

Notes: Abstract The large low temperature peak in the microwave conductivity observed in the oxides has been interpreted in terms of the collapse of the inelastic scattering time brought about by the gapping of the fluctuation spectrum responsible for superconductivity. It is shown that this gapping also affects the temperature dependence of the magnetic penetration depth and that it shows up clearly in the infrared conductivity.

Notes: Abstract Based on the recent observation of the stripe instability in Cuprate superconductors, we present the hypothesis that the normal state finds its origin in a particular kind of stripe-quantum fluid. The charged domain walls are interpreted as strings on a lattice and the quantum fluctuation of an individual string is driven by a proliferation of kinks. The kink dynamics gives rise to meandering fluctuations of the string as a whole. We identify a special string vacuum characterized by a proliferation of charged kinks. This state carries a Luttinger-liquid like electronic excitation spectrum.

Notes: Abstract Measurements of physical properties were performed on the PrBa2Cu4O8-δ sample prepared by the sol-gel method and sintered in I atm oxygen pressure. Instead of exhibiting superconductivity as for R Y or Gd in the RBa2Cu4O8-δ compound. This compound is unstable, insulating but metallic-like at low temperatures. No superconductivity was observed down to 2 K. Since PrBa2Cu4O8-δ can be re-written as Cu2Ba2PrCu2O8-δ which is a compound of two CuO2-layers and two CuO-chains, the possibility of anomalous Pr antiferromagnetic ordering around 18 K observed from preliminary magnetic data and the effect of oxygen stoichiotmetry parameter δ on the metal-insulator transition are explored.
