    Description: Three major reasons for the continued study of the weather and climate of Mars are: (1) the engineering support of future unmanned and manned missions, including operations on the Martian surface, (2) the comparative study of the climates of earth and Mars, and (3) the perspective provided by understanding what Mars is really like now and how it got that way. Together, the suite of national and international missions to Mars currently in progress and in the advanced planning stages could provide a credible data base for addressing many outstanding climatic questions, as well as greatly improving current engineering models of the Mars atmosphere and surface.

    Notes: The FORTRAN source code is given for a computer program that calculates the two-dimensional intensity distribution in convergent-beam transmission electron microdiffraction (CBED) patterns from perfect crystals. The program uses the eigenvalue or Bloch-ware method. It allows three-dimensional dynamical diffraction, and so includes all higher-order Laue zone effects without approximation. No symmetry reduction is included. The program accepts noncentrosymmetric or centrosymmetric crystal structures and allows absorption corrections to be included. It uses the “EISPACK” subroutines for the diagonalisation of a general complex matrix. Up to 100 CBED disks may be included. The code is also available via “Bitnet”.

    Notes: At least one member of the TGF-β family, TGF-β1, has been previously shown to inhibit the anchorage-independent growth of some human breast cancer cell lines (Knabbe et al., 1987; Arteaga et al., 1988). Members of the TGF-β family might, therefore, provide new strategies for breast cancer therapy. We have studied the inhibitory effects of TGF-β1 and TGF-β2 on the anchorage-independent growth of the estrogen receptor-negative cell lines MDA-MB-231, SK-BR-3, Hs578T, MDA-MB-468, and MDA-MB-468-S4 (an MDA-MB-468 clone not growth inhibited by EGF) and the estrogen receptor-positive cell lines MCF7, ZR-75-1, T-47D. TGF-β1 and TGF-β2 caused a 75-90% growth inhibition of MDA-MB-231, SK-BR-3, Hs578T, and MDA-MB-468 cells and a 50% growth inhibition of ZR-75-1 and early passage (〈 100) MCF7 cells. T-47D cells responded to TGF-β only in serum-free conditions in the presence of IGF-1 or EGF. The growth of MDA-MB-468-S4 cells and late passage (〉 500) MCF7 cells was not inhibited by TGF-β1 or TGF-β2. TGF-β-sensitive MCF7 and MDA-MB-231 cells did not respond to Muellerian inhibiting substance (MIS), a TGF-β-related polypeptide. TGF-β1 and TGF-β2 were mutually competitive for receptor binding with a similar affinity (Kd 25-130 pM, 1,000-13,000 sites per cell). To determine the time course of the TGF-β effect, an anchorage-dependent growth assay was carried out using MDA-MB-231 cells. Growth inhibition occurred at 6 days, and cell-cycle changes were seen 12 hr after the addition of TGF-β. Cells accumulated in the G1 phase and were thus inhibited from entering the S-phase. These data indicate that TGF-β is a potent growth inhibitor in most breast cancer cell lines and provide a basis for studying TGF-β effects in vivo.

    Description: A search of active deflation basins near Jal, Lea County, New Mexico resulted in the discovery of two meteorites, Lea County 001 and 002. Lea County 001 has mean olivine and low-Ca pyroxene compositions of Fa(19) and Fs(17), respectively. These and all other mineralogical and petrological data collected indicate a classification of H5 for this stone. Lea County 002 has mean olivine and low-Ca pyroxene compositions of Fa(2) and Fs(4), and is unequilibrated. Although it is mineralogically most similar to Kakangari and chondritic clasts within Cumberland Falls, the high modal amount of forsterite makes Lea County a unique type 3 chondrite. Oxygen isotope data for Lea County 002 fall on an 0-16-mixing line through those of the enstatite meteorites and IAB irons, a feature shared by Kakangari.

    Notes: The coronate larva of the ascophoran bryozoan Watersipora arcuata has a ring of 32 large, multiciliated coronal cells that are used for swimming. Fourteen pairs of small cells are intercalated between the lateral margins of adjacent coronal cells. These intercoronal cells are arranged in a precise pattern and are polymorphic: seven pairs have multiple cilia and seven pairs are mono- or oligociliated. Three pairs of multiciliated intercoronal cells have their cilia arranged as a whorl that is recessed in a pocket formed between the adjacent coronal cells, and they are thought to be photoreceptors that sense general light intensity. Two other pairs of multiciliated cells with cohesive tufts of cilia may be chemo- or mechanoreceptors. Roles of the other intercoronal cells in this species are not evident, but it is proposed that the majority, if not all, of them are sensory. The close proximity of all the intercoronal cells to the equatorial nerve ring is compatible with this interpretation. Analyses of the literature on cleavage patterns, pigment cup ocelli, and flagellar tufts that serve as balancers in coronate larvae lead us to propose that (1) an intercoronal cell is the sensory element of most, if not all, pigment cup ocelli of bryozoan larvae; and (2) intercoronal cells are not modified coronal cells but probably are specialized supra- and/or infracoronal ones that have migrated to an intercoronal position.

    Notes: The larva of the ascophoran cheilstome Watersipora arcuata is described on the basis of serial 1-μ sections, light microscopy of whole mounts, and scanning electron microscopy. Using lightly osmicated specimens, it was possible to map almost every cell on the larval surface. Limited observations on hatching and larval behavior are provided in conjunction with the anatomical description. Tissues of the larva are partitioned between those that function exclusively during the larval period and are degraded at metamorphosis as transitory tissues and those that will have postmetamorphic fates in formation of the ancestrula. Significantly, W. arcuata has two possible anlagen for the ancestrular polypide, the infracoronal cells in the oral hemisphere and the epidermal blastemal cells in the aboral hemisphere, rather than only one or the other of these as reported in other species. Also detailed are the supracoronal flange and groove, which are unique to this genus and are involved in the transmission of mycoplasma-like organisms between successive generations of adults; two pairs of complex pigment cup ocelli; multiple intercoronal cells that are presumed to have varied sensory and mechanical functions; and the sensory, adhesive, and locomotory components of the pyriform organ. The larval anatomy of W. arcuata is compared with that of the larvae of the ctenostomes Alcyonidium gelatinosum (coronate), Bowerbankia imbricata (coronate), B. gracilis (coronate), and Flustrellidra hispida (shelled lecithotrophic) and of the cheilostomes Bugula neritina (coronate), Electra pilosa (cyphonautes), and Membranipora membranacea (cyphonautes). This study is the first detailed analysis of the larval structure of any ascophoran bryozoan and provides a necessary platform for subsequent analyses of embryology and metamorphosis.

The Crystal Structure of Cs3[FeCl5(H2O)]Cl and its Topotactic Formation from Cs2[FeCl5(H2O)] and CsClTricesium aquapentachloroferrate(III) chloride crystallizes from acid aqueous solutions of FeCl3 · 6 H2O and CsCl in the triclinic space group P11 with a = 714,1 pm, b = 1 070.9 pm, c = 950,4 pm, α = 105.65°, β = 109.51 °, γ = 89.08° and Z = 2. The compound is formed also from dicesium aquapentachloroferrate(III) and cesium chloride in a solid state reaction. The orientational relationships between the educt and product phases are elucidated, and a topotactic reaction mechanism is discussed.
