    Beschreibung: The extractable organic matter in Holocene to early Miocene deep-sea sediments from Site 645 (ODP Leg 105) in Baffin Bay contains almost exclusively biological markers of terrigenous origin. Pentacyclic triterpenoids of the alpha-(ursene) and beta-amyrin (oleanene) type often occur as the most abundant compounds in the aliphatic hydrocarbon, ketone and alcohol fractions of the sediment extract. A specific diagenetic reaction involves the conversion of taraxer-14-ene into olean-12-ene in the upper 700 metres of the sedimentary sequence. The taraxerene-to-oleanene conversion is complete before the onset of isomerisation of diasterenes at C-20. In the sediment as well as in laboratory simulation experiments, olean-12-ene further isomerises to olean-13(18)-ene and olean-18-ene, the latter of which may be the direct precursor of 18beta(H)- and 18alpha(H)-oleanane found in sediments containing more mature organic matter and in crude oils. The subsurface interconversion of these triterpenoid skeletons indicate that oleanane does not necessarily start life as an oleanoid.

    Beschreibung: The Oligocene to Pliocene section from Hole 628A supplied about 100 species of Tertiary ostracodes. Deep-sea psychrospheric? species (Bradleya cf. dictyon, Agrenocythere cf. gosnoldia, Cardobairdia spp., Henryhowella sp., Cytheropteron spp., etc.) are present throughout the section. Starting in the Miocene, neritic species (Hulingsina sp., Puriana spp., Caudites spp., Loxoconcha fischeri, Cytherelloidea sp., etc.) dominate. Redeposition of these species from the continental shelf seems to be penecontemporaneous with sedimentation. Variations in the assemblages indicate biostratigraphic position.     Beschreibung: Three holes were cored at Site 630 during Leg 101 of the Ocean Drilling Program. Whole-round samples were obtained for geotechnical analyses from Hole 630B. Consolidation studies, which relate changes in the coefficients of consolidation, compressibility, and permeability to the overburden pressure, indicate that sediments recovered to 79.4 mbsf (meters below seafloor) are not significantly consolidated. This may be a function of total carbonate content, mineralogy, and type of carbonate constituents. The lower total porosity and permeability of Section 101-630B-2H-5 relative to 101-630B-5H-6 and 101-630B-9H-6 are explained in terms of effective fluid flow, total calcium carbonate content, and type of constituents present. Results from triaxial shear testing and direct shear testing indicate that Section 101-630B-2H-5 has a higher degree of cohesion and a higher angle of internal friction (0) than sediment recovered deeper in the section, although angles of internal friction from all three samples are lower than typical angles measured from deep-sea foraminiferal ooze. Attempts to compare triaxial shear results qualitatively with measurements of undrained vane shear strength from Hole 630A suggest that the latter may be meaningless if taken from sediments dependent on overburden pressure to maintain strength. Calculations based on consolidated and drained shear strength suggest that if the sediment column is homogeneous, the slope will be stable to 14° of inclination. If the inhomogeneities in the section, such as the turbidite layers known to be present, are weaker than the sediments tested, then the stable slope inclination may be less than that calculated. This is substantiated by the abundance of seismic evidence for slumping, sliding, and imbricate thrusting on this gentle (2°-3°) slope.

    Beschreibung: Samples from Cenozoic and Mesozoic sediments drilled during ODP Leg 103 were analyzed for clay mineralogy. Kaolinite, chlorite, illite, and smectite occur in most of the samples studied; palygorskite and sepiolite occur principally in Paleogene and Eocene brown clays. In general, throughout the section deposited in the syn- and post-rift period, the more calcareous-rich pelagic sediments contain greater amounts of smectite and lesser amounts of kaolinite and chlorite than do the calcareous-poor terrigenous sediments. The clay data presented here also lend support to the general paleoenvironmental interpretation of a relatively warm climate throughout the Cretaceous and early Tertiary and a relatively cooler climate from the Oligocene to the present day.

    Beschreibung: Several celestite nodules were recovered on DSDP Leg 90 from four drilling sites on the Lord Howe Rise, southwest Pacific Ocean. The sediments at these sites are predominantly very pure calcareous nannofossil oozes and chalks. As a result of a higher-than average accumulation rate, they undergo relatively rapid burial diagenesis, which causes the expulsion of Sr from the biogenic calcite, to the interstitial waters. Another result of the high accumulation rate is the occurrence of microbial sulfate reduction in the interstitial waters. The downcore Sr increase is proportionately greater than the sulfate decrease, and celestite precipitates below about 100 m subbottom at each of these sites. The celestite contains high concentrations of many substituent cations: 4.3-7.8 mole% BaSO4, 1.7-6.4 mole% CaSO4, 1100-2600 ppm Al, and 400-750 ppm K. Ion activity products of Sr and sulfate at each site were calculated from the Pitzer equations and the measured concentrations of porewater constituents, and are in close agreement with the celestite solubility product corrected for in situ temperatures and pressures. Strontium concentrations of the porewaters are nearly at equilibrium with respect to celestite, and are controlled by the extent of microbial sulfate reduction. Celestite solubility increases with increasing water depth, in excellent agreement with values of the standard state partial molal volume change.

    Beschreibung: Radiolarians form a remarkable part of the fossil plankton for Cretaceous sediments of the North Atlantic. Selected sites with long-term sedimentary successions of deep facies were studied (ODP Leg 103 and DSDP Site 398 off northwest Spain and DSDP Site 603 off the east coast of the United States). Preservation of the radiolarian faunas is generally poor, and the faunal abundance and diversity reflect the diagenetic history of the host sediment rather than the original faunal productivity. Several exceptions include abundant and some well-preserved radiolarian faunas from lower Campanian, Cenomanian/Turonian boundary, upper Albian, lower Albian, and Barremian sediments. These increases in radiolarian abundance and preservation coincide with well-established Cretaceous oceanic events in the North Atlantic. Typical faunal associations of these sections are described, and faunal associations from the Cenomanian/Turonian Boundary Event are documented for the first time in the North Atlantic. The relationship of the radiolarian blooms with coeval oceanic events in the North Atlantic is also discussed.

    Beschreibung: Drilling at ODP Site 641 (on the western margin of Galicia Bank, off northwestern Spain) revealed a thin, but pronounced, interval of black shale and gray-green claystone. Our high-resolution study combines the sedimentology, micropaleontology (palynomorphs and others), organic and inorganic geochemistry, and isotopic values of this layer to demonstrate the distinct nature of the sediment and prove that the sequence represents the local sedimentary expression of the global Cenomanian/Turonian Oceanic Anoxic Event (OAE) of Schlanger and Jenkyns (1976), Arthur and Schlanger (1979), and Jenkyns (1980), also called the Cenomanian/Turonian Boundary Event (CTBE). The most striking evidence is that the strong positive d13C excursion characterizing the CTBE sequences in shallow areas can be traced into a pronounced deep-sea expression, thus providing a good stratigraphic marker for the CTBE in various paleosettings. The isotopic excursion at Site 641 coincides with an extremely enriched trace metal content, with values that were previously unknown for the Cretaceous Atlantic. Similar to other CTBE occurrences, the organic carbon content is high (up to 11%) and the organic matter is of dominantly marine origin (kerogen type II). The bulk mineralogy of the CTBE sediments does not differ significantly from the general trend of Cretaceous North Atlantic sediments (dominance of smectite and zeolite with minor amounts of illite and scattered palygorskite, kaolinite, and chlorite); thus, no evidence for either increased volcanic activity nor a drastic climatic change in the borderlands was found. Results from Site 641 are compared with the CTBE section found at Site 398, DSDP Leg 47B (Vigo Seamount at the southern end of the Galicia Bank).

    Beschreibung: A ridge of strongly serpentinized, plagioclase-bearing peridotite crops out at the boundary between the Atlantic oceanic crust and the Galicia continental margin (western Spain). These peridotites, cored at Hole 637A (ODP Leg 103) have been mylonitized at high-temperature, low-pressure conditions and under large deviatoric stress during their uplift (Girardeau et al., 1988, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.sr.103.135.1988). After this main ductile deformation event, the peridotite underwent a polyphase metamorphic static episode in the presence of water, with the crystallization of Ti- and Cr-rich pargasites at high-temperature (800°-900°C) interaction with a metasomatic fluid or alkaline magma. Introduction of water produced destabilization of the pyroxenes and the subsequent development of hornblendes and tremolite at temperatures decreasing from 750° to 350°C. The main serpentinization of the peridotite occurred at a temperature below 300°C, and possibly around 50°C, as a consequence of the introduction of a large amount of seawater, which is suggested by stable isotope (d18O and SD) data. Finally, calcite derived from seawater precipitated in late-formed fractures or locally pervasively impregnated the peridotite at low temperature (~10°C).

    Beschreibung: A ridge of peridotite was drilled off of the Galicia margin (Hole 637A) during ODP Leg 103. The ridge is located at the approximate boundary between oceanic and continental crust. This setting is of interest because the peridotite may be representative of upwelling upper mantle beneath an incipient ocean basin. The composition of the Galicia margin peridotite is compared with those of other North Atlantic peridotites. Hole 637A ultramafic lithologies include clinopyroxene-rich spinel harzburgite and lherzolite, as well as plagioclase-bearing peridotites. Variations in mineral modal abundances and mineral compositions are observed but are not systematic. The peridotites are broadly similar in composition to other peridotites recovered from ocean basins, but the mineral compositions and abundances suggest that they are less depleted in basaltic components than other North Atlantic peridotites by about 10%. In particular, the peridotites are enriched in the magmaphilic elements Na, Al, and Ti, as compared with other abyssal peridotites. The high abundances of these elements suggest that the Hole 637A peridotites had experienced, at most, very small amounts of partial melting prior to their emplacement. The presence of plagioclase rimming spinel in some samples suggests that the peridotite last equilibrated at about 9 kbar, near the transition between plagioclase- and spinel-peridotite stability fields. Temperatures of equilibration of the peridotite are calculated as 900°-1100°C. The relatively undepleted composition of the peridotite indicates that it was emplaced at a shallow mantle level under a relatively cool thermal regime and cooled below solidus temperatures without having participated in any significant partial melting and basalt production. This is consistent with the emplacement of the peridotite during incipient rifting of the ocean basin, before a true spreading center was established.

At Site 639, 1.7 m of brown clay in Core 103-639C-2R is Eocene to Oligocene. At Site 640, 3.5 m of clay in Cores 103-640A-1R and 103-640A-2R contains a Cretaceous to Paleocene sequence, with the Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary between 84 and 103 cm in Section 103-640A-2R-1.

    Beschreibung: Mineral compositions of the plagioclase-bearing ultramafic tectonites dredged and cored seaward of the continental slope of the Galicia margin (Leg 103, Site 637) were compared to mineral compositions from onshore low-pressure ultramafic bodies (southeastern Ronda, western Pyrenees, and Lizard Point), on the basis of standardized (30-s counting time) probe analyses. The comparison was extended to some plagioclase-free harzburgites related to ophiolites (Santa Elena in Costa Rica, north Oman, and the Humboldt body in New Caledonia) on the basis of new analytical data and data from the literature. The behavior of Cr, Na, Al, Mg, Fe, Ni, and Ti in olivine, pyroxenes, and spinel was examined in order to distinguish between the effects of partial melting and mineral facies change, from the spinel to plagioclase stability fields. The peridotite from the Galicia margin appears slightly depleted in major incompatible elements and experienced a minor partial melting. However, it experienced large scale but heterogeneous recrystallization in the plagioclase field. These features are very similar to those observed in Ronda, whereas in the western Pyrenees the minerals exemplify a very minor partial-melting event (or none at all) and have retained compositions corresponding to those of the relatively high-pressure Seiland sub facies. The minerals from the Lizard Point peridotite have characteristics (low Mg/(Mg + Fe) ratio; high Cr/(Cr + Al) ratio in spinel) more related to cumulate from a differentiated tholeiitic melt than related to ophiolitic tectonite. Diffusion profiles of Al and Cr across pyroxenes and spinel show that recrystallization features occurred at different speeds or temperatures in the different bodies. The pyroxenes from Ronda would have experienced recrystallization about 14 times faster than the peridotite from the Galicia margin. The western Pyrenean lherzolites also experienced rapid recrystallization; nevertheless, because they are of a different mineral facies, the data are not directly comparable to that from Ronda and Galicia. The harzburgite at Santa Elena as well as a xenolith from alkali basalt exemplify rapid cooling characterized by very weak re-equilibration. Recrystallization speed is related to emplacement speed in the present geological environment. The slow-rising Galicia margin peridotite was emplaced by thinning of the lithospheric subcontinental mantle near an incipient mid-oceanic ridge. The fast-rising peridotites from Ronda and the western Pyrenees were hot diapirs emplaced from the asthenosphere along transcurrent faults, possibly related to the opening of the Atlantic Ocean.

    Beschreibung: The composition of 31 samples of Lower Cretaceous (Valanginian to Aptian) sandstone from ODP Sites 638 through 641 was analyzed using the Gazzi-Dickinson point-counting method. The results show that the source of the Valanginian to Hauterivian sand was a continental block, dominated by granitic and/or high-grade-metamorphic rocks. Although these petrologic results do not allow discrimination between various potential continental block provinces, they suggest, in conjunction with seismic profiles and regional considerations, that the source was the Galicia margin or western Iberia. In contrast, the Barremian and Aptian sand is dominated by carbonate grains that were derived from a carbonate platform, probably on Galicia Bank.

    Beschreibung: Textural and compositional differences were found between gravity-flow sheets in an open-ocean environment on the northern slope of Little Bahama Bank (Site 628, Pliocene turbidite sequence) and in a closed-basin depositional setting (Site 632, Quaternary turbidite sequence). Mud-supported debris-flow sheets were cored at Site 628. Average mean grain size of the turbidite samples was lower, mud content was higher, and sorting was poorer than in comparable samples from Site 632. This reflects the deposition of proximal, low-energy turbidity currents and debris flows on a base-ofslope carbonate apron. No mud-supported debris-flow sheets were deposited in the investigated sediment sequence of Hole 632A. Many larger turbidity currents from around the margins of Exuma Sound may have reached this central basin setting, depositing sediments that had been transported over longer distances. Planktonic components dominate in the grain-sized fraction (500-1000 µm) of turbidite samples from Hole 628A, while platform detritus is rare. We interpreted this as resulting from the erosion and reworking of a large area of open-ocean slope sediments by gravity flows. In contrast, large amounts of benthic and platform components were found in the turbidite samples of Hole 632A. This may be explained by the fact that the slopes of the enclosed Exuma Sound are steep, and turbidity currents bypassed much of these slopes through pronounced channels, delivering more shallow-water detritus to the deep basin. Erosion of slope sediments, a possible source area of planktonic detritus, is assumed to be low. The small slope area in relation to the larger surrounding platform areas and lower production of planktonic components in the enclosed waters of Exuma Sound may also explain the observed low number of planktonic components at Hole 632A. Turbidite material from both open-ocean and enclosed-basin environments was deposited at Site 635.

    Beschreibung: Paleomagnetic measurements were made on 913 samples from 11 holes (626B, 626C, 627B, 628A, 630A, 631A, 632A, 632B, 633A, 634A, and 635B) drilled in and around the Bahamas carbonate bank during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 101. These samples displayed a wide range of magnetic intensities (from about 1.0 A/m to 1.6 * 10**- 6 A/m) and magnetic behavior. Most samples were weakly magnetized and had low mean destructive fields; however, sediments from sections of several holes were strongly magnetic with stable magnetizations. Magnetic-polarity interpretations were made on a Campanian unit from Hole 627B, a mid-Oligocene unit from Hole 628A, and a Plio-Pleistocene section from Hole 633A. Sediments in the upper parts of Holes 627B, 632A, and 633A have high magnetic intensities that decay 2 to 3 orders of magnitude over depths of 5 to 18 mbsf. The pattern of decline of the magnetism and the change in mean destructive fields and geochemical conditions in these holes are consistent with diagenetic dissolution of the magnetic minerals in a suboxic or anoxic-sulfidic environment. Paleolatitudes were calculated from samples from 16 time units in 7 holes and compared to the apparent polar wander path of the North American plate.

    Beschreibung: Petrographic descriptions and stable oxygen and carbon isotope compositions of microsamples of Campanian-age sediment gravity-flow deposits from Northeast Providence Channel, Bahamas, indicate deep-marine cementation of shallow-marine skeletal grains that were transported to the channel during the Late Cretaceous. Shallow-marine components are represented by mollusks, especially rudists, and shallow-water benthic foraminifers as well as sparse echinoderm and algal grains. The sole evidence of diagenesis in shallow-marine environments consists of micrite envelopes around skeletal grains. Shallow-marine skeletal grains have mean stable isotope values of -3.1 per mil d18O and +2.6 per mil d13C. The d18O values are consistent with precipitation in equilibrium with warm (20°-30°C), shallow-marine water. Deep-marine components are represented by equant calcite spar cements and rip-up clasts of slope sediments. Spar cements, exhibiting hexagonal morphology with scalenohedral terminations, most commonly occur as thin isopachous linings in the abundant porosity. Deep-marine cements have mean stable isotope values of - 1.1 per mil d18O and +2.7 per mil d13C. Deep-marine cements are 18O-enriched relative to shallow-marine skeletal grains, consistent with precipitation in equilibrium with colder (10°-20°C), deep-marine waters. The cement .source during lithification appears to have been dissolution of aragonite and high-magnesium calcite skeletal grains, which made up part of the transported sediment. Interbedded periplatform ooze remains uncemented, or poorly cemented, probably because of lower permeability. Equant spar cements that occur in gravity-flow deposits recovered from Hole 634A have stable isotope compositions similar to spars in Lower and mid-Cretaceous shallow-water limestones exposed on the Bahama Escarpment, to Campanian-Paleocene deep-marine hardgrounds recovered during DSDP Leg 15 in the Caribbean, and to spars in Aptian-Albian talus deposits at the base of the Campeche Escarpment recovered during DSDP Leg 77.

    Beschreibung: The organic matter contained within a series of Albian to Cenomanian, dark gray to black marls was characterized using pyrolysis techniques and analysis (elemental and carbon isotopes) of isolated kerogens. It was concluded that this material had a marine affinity. Variations in geochemical characteristics reflect differences in the extent of preservation, rather than changes in organic provenance. These changes appear to reflect differences in water depth and the position of the depositional site relative to the oxygen-minimum zone. Sediments displaying the most elevated levels of organiccarbon and hydrogen enrichment probably reflect sedimentation within the oxygen-minimum zone. Waters within the oxygen-minimum zone were probably dysaerobic, rather than anoxic. The presence of at least trace quantities of oxygen at the depositional site explains the poor degree of organic preservation and the material's largely gas-prone characteristics.

    Beschreibung: A detailed rock magnetic investigation has been carried out on Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) pelagic sediments from the Central Equatorial Pacific. This comprises hysteresis and thermomagnetic measurements, Lowrie-Fuller test and, for the first time, ferromagnetic resonance (FMR). Nearly stochiometric magnetite in two grain size fractions, single domain (SD) and multi domain (MD), has been deduced to be the carrier of magnetic remanence. Comparatively strong paramagnetic contributions are carried by pyrite, being identified by X-ray analysis. The statistical analysis of paleomagnetic parameters (NRM, MDF, initial susceptibility, Königsberger ratio Q) from a large number (〉 1000) of samples, supported by hysteresis measurements, indicates a latitude and sedimentation rate dependent ratio of SD/MD grains. Possible sources for the magnetic constituents are discussed in terms of bacterial, volcanic, meteoritic and authigenic origin.

    Beschreibung: A reexamination of the agglutinated benthic foraminiferal microfaunas found in the Upper Cretaceous red and brown clays of DSDP Hole 603B and ODP Holes 640A and 641A allows us to refine the initial shipboard biostratigraphic interpretation and to propose a fourfold zonation that can be used with some precautions in the oceanic realm. By means of various calibrations, an attempt is also made to integrate this zonation in a worldwide chronostratigraphic framework. The resulting chronologic control permits us to discern large differences in the rhythm of red clay deposition on either side of the North Atlantic Ocean.
