Beschreibung: H2311 + 77, one of the bright soft X-ray sources in the sky originally detected with HEAO 1, has been identified in an Exosat imaging observation with a 7.7-mag late-type star, HD220140. The X-ray luminosity and the optical characteristics of this star indicate that it is probably an RS CVn binary system.

Beschreibung: CCD sensors placed across the focal plane of large Schmidt telescopes have great potential for detecting and measuring the very low flux in space of meteoroids with diameters larger than 1 meter. With the Palomar 'Big Schmidt', a detection rate of 1.4 per hour is obtained for meteoroids between 0.6 and 200 meters in diameter. For the Baker-Nunn 'Satellite Tracking Camera', the corresponding rate is about 0.8 per hour. The key to obtaining such high detection rates derives from approximately setting the sensor integration time equal to the time it takes a meteoroid to cross a pixel field of view. This minimizes signal to noise problems and is accomplished, in practice, by multiple summing of short integration time data records to obtain data records of longer effective integration times.

Beschreibung: Precession corrections, equinox motions and locations, and obliquities for the FK4 are determined from laser-ranging data only by the ephemeris-fitting method of Standish (1982) and compared with those calculated by Fricke (1971 and 1982) from optical observations. The theoretical basis of the comparison is explained, and the results are presented in a table. No significant differences are found in the equinox offset and equinox motion values, and good agreement is found in the equinox location. The ephemeris-fitting obliquity values are shown to be consistent to within 10 marcsec and to be about 20 marcsec lower than the optical values.

Beschreibung: The history of astronomical longitude precession determination is reviewed. Consideration is given to the work of Hipparchus and Ptolemy, the definition of rotation axes, the major 19th-century determinations, and 20th-century studies (using the data of Newcomb; based on PGC, GC, and McCormick/Cape catalogs; using FK3, FK4, and AGK3; involving galaxies; and using the dynamical method). Laser ranging and VLBI are seen as the most promising techniques for future precession measurements. Diagrams, graphs, and tables of numerical data are provided.

Beschreibung: A statistical analysis of IRAS observations indicates that about 20 percent of the nearby main sequence stars, and probably a similar fraction of main sequence stars not detectable by IRAS, shows evidence of significant infrared excess beyond 12 microns. Spectral type A dwarfs are predominant, but not exclusive in showing large 60-micron excesses. The solar system, when viewed from sufficient distance, appears to have, in contrast to this, less than 1 percent of cool infrared excess. These observational facts are consistent with the working hypothesis that cold infrared excess in stable main sequence stars is due to protoplanetary material, observable during the accretion phase in the evolution of a solar system.

Beschreibung: The postbuckling behavior of long rectangular isotropic and orthotropic plates is determined. By assuming trigonometric functions in one direction, the nonlinear partial differential equations of von Karman large deflection plate theory are converted into nonlinear ordinary differential equations. The ordinary differential equations are solved numerically using an available boundary value problem solver which makes use of Newton's method. Results for longitudinal compression show different postbuckling behavior between isotropic and orthotropic plates. Results for shear show that change in inplane edge constraints can cause large change in postbuckling stiffness.

Beschreibung: An analysis is presented of the shear buckling load of an arbitrary simply-supported prismatic plate assembly or stiffened panel configuration. The method utilizes stiffness matrices developed by Wittrick (1968). For the restraint of simple support along edges perpendicular to the longitudinal direction, various wavelengths of response are combined using an energy method that involves only a boundary integral. Numerical results for plate and panel configurations show the accuracy and convergence of the method.

Beschreibung: The application of layered synthetic microstructures (LSMs) to figured mirrors suitable for normal incidence solar EUV telescopes is considered, and initial studies for a single mirror telescope consisting of an f/18, 200-cm focal length off-axis paraboloid demonstrate the feasibility of LSM coatings for moderate sized mirrors. Analytical studies on broadband designs comprised of five layers show a seven percent reflectance at 256 A and reflectivities of over 12 percent for wavelengths above 300 A. Deposition considerations are also discussed.

Beschreibung: In this expository paper a first-order shear deformation laminate theory that accounts for the von Karman strains is described and its finite element model is developed. The element also accounts for Hill's elastic-perfectly plastic material model. Sample applications of the present element to linear and nonlinear bending of laminated plates and shells are presented. Numerical results showing the effects of boundary conditions, lamination scheme, and loading on the deflections and stresses are also presented. It is found that the effect of shear deformation and boundary conditions on deflections are significant.

Beschreibung: A variational approach is used to model the moisture content and distribution profiles which cause swelling in polymers and composites which are used as aircraft structural components. The moisture intrusion stems from humidity, which makes the problem one of diffusion of mass from the environment into a semiinfinite plate with a given diffusion coefficient and thickness. Lagrangian, ordinary differential equations are defined for the mass diffusion, including driving force, mass potential and volume dissipation expressions. Account is taken of the effects of stress on diffusivity, including the dilatational stress caused by inhomogeneous swelling of the material. It is noted that material near the top and bottom of a part undergoes the most swelling, and the evolution of moisture diffusion in the materials is traced. Finally, experimental data are used to define differential equations for predicting the final moisture distribution within the material.

Beschreibung: A model is presented which can be used to determine the appropriate values of the process variables for filament winding a cylinder. The model provides the cylinder temperature, viscosity, degree of cure, fiber position and fiber tension as functions of position and time during the filament winding and subsequent cure, and the residual stresses and strains within the cylinder during and after the cure. A computer code was developed to obtain quantitative results. Sample results are given which illustrate the information that can be generated with this code.

Beschreibung: The effects of pretwist, precone, setting angle and Coriolis forces on the vibration and buckling behavior of rotating, torsionally rigid, cantilevered beams were studied. The beam is considered to be clamped on the axis of rotation in one case, and off the axis of rotation in the other. Two methods are employed for the solution of the vibration problem: (1) one based upon a finite-difference approach using second order central differences for solution of the equations of motion, and (2) based upon the minimum of the total potential energy functional with a Ritz type of solution procedure making use of complex forms of shape functions for the dependent variables. The individual and collective effects of pretwist, precone, setting angle, thickness ratio and Coriolis forces on the natural frequencies and the buckling boundaries are presented. It is shown that the inclusion of Coriolis effects is necessary for blades of moderate to large thickness ratios while these effects are not so important for small thickness ratio blades. The possibility of buckling due to centrifugal softening terms for large values of precone and rotation is shown.

Beschreibung: The use of an orthogonal set of specially selected Ritz vectors is shown to be very effective in reducing the cost of dynamic analysis by modal superposition. Several mechanical structures are examined, and the Ritz vector approach is compared to the classical eigenvector approach on the basis of cost, accuracy and elapsed analysis (throughput) time. Mathematical proof of the completeness of orthogonal Ritz vectors is provided for the case of a positive definite mass matrix and a symmetric stiffness matrix.

Beschreibung: The buckling of an elliptic delamination embedded near the surface of a thick quasi-isotropic laminate was predicted. The thickness of the delaminated ply group (the sublaminate) was assumed to be small compared to the total laminate thickness. Finite-element and Rayleigh-Ritz methods were used for the analyses. The Rayleigh-Ritz method was found to be simple, inexpensive, and accurate, except for highly anisotropic delaminated regions. Effects of delamination shape and orientation, material anisotropy, and layup on buckling strains were examined. Results show that: (1) the stress state around the delaminated region is biaxial, which may lead to buckling when the laminate is loaded in tension; (2) buckling strains for multi-directional fiber sublaminates generally are bounded by those for the 0 deg and 90 deg unidirectional sublaminates; and (3) the direction of elongation of the sublaminate that has the lowest buckling strain correlates with the delamination growth direction.

Beschreibung: The stochastic nature of the mass extinction model of Rampino and Stothers (1984), based on the vertical oscillation of the solar system about the plane of the Galaxy, can accommodate a few events with large phase discrepancies. The degree of modulation is crucial in that it depends on the scale height of the population of molecular clouds relative to the amplitude of the solar system and tends to zero if this ratio is large and encounters are entirely random. Here data are presented here from CO surveys of molecular clouds both within and beyond the solar circle which permit explicit calculation of the strength of the modulation. The cloud layer near the sun it too extended and, as a consequence, the modulation of cloud encounters is too weak for a statistically significant period to be extracted from the nine extinctions analyzed by Rampino and Stothers.

Beschreibung: A time-domain computational procedure is presented for predicting the dynamic response of laminated anisotropic shells. The two key elements of the procedure are: (1) use of mixed finite element models having independent interpolation (shape) functions for stress resultants and generalized displacements for the spatial discretization of the shell, with the stress resultants allowed to be discontinuous at interelement boundaries; and (2) use of a dynamic reduction method, with the global approximation vectors consisting of the static solution and an orthogonal set of Lanczos vectors. The dynamic reduction is accomplished by means of successive application of the finite element method and the classical Rayleigh-Ritz technique. The finite element method is first used to generate the global approximation vectors. Then the Rayleigh-Ritz technique is used to generate a reduced system of ordinary differential equations in the amplitudes of these modes. The temporal integration of the reduced differential equations is performed by using an explicit half-station central difference scheme (Leap-frog method). The effectiveness of the proposed procedure is demonstrated by means of a numerical example and its advantages over reduction methods used with the displacement formulation are discussed.

Beschreibung: A 30 x 30 arcsec field at the Galactic Center (1.5 x 1.5 parsec) was mapped at 8.3 microns and 12.41 microns with high spatial resolution and accurate relative astrometry, using the 16 x 16 Si:Bi accumulation mode charge injection device Goddard infrared array camera. The design and performance of the array camera detector electronics system and image data processing techniques are discussed. Color temperature and dust opacity distributions derived from the spatially accurate images indicate that the compact infrared sources and the large scale ridge structure are bounded by warmer, more diffuse material. None of the objects appear to be heated appreciably by internal luminosity sources. These results are consistent with the model proposing that the complex is heated externally by a strong luminosity source at the Galactic Center, which dominates the energetics of the inner few parsecs of the galaxy.

Beschreibung: A methodology is presented for predicting stable crack growth and instability of cracked structural components from results of laboratory tests on metallic materials under plane-stress conditions. The methodology is based on the displacement V sub R at the tip of a stably tearing crack. Basically, the V sub R-curve method is a resistance curve approach, such as K sub R and J sub R, except that the 'crack drive' is written in terms of crack-tip displacement instead of K or J. The relationship between crack-tip-opening displacement, crack length, specimen type, and tensile properties is derived from the Dugdale model for the cracked structure of interest. This report describes the laboratory test procedure and calculations used to obtain the V sub R resistance curve from fracture tests of compact or of middle-crack tension (formally center-crack) specimens. The analysis procedure used to predict stable crack growth and instability of any through-the-thickness crack configuration made of the same material and thickness, and tested under the same environmental conditions, is presented. The various limitations of the present V sub R curve method are given. Four example calculations and predictions are shown.

Beschreibung: The results of an experimental and predictive round robin on the applications of fracture analysis methods are presented. The objective of the round robin was to verify whether fracture analysis methods currently in use can or cannot predict failure loads on complex structural components containing cracks. Fracture results from tests on a number of compact specimens were used to make the predictions. The accuracy of the prediction methods was evaluated in terms of the variation in the ratio of predicted to experimental failure loads, and the predictions methods are ranked in order of minimum standard error. A range of applicability of the different methods was also considered in assessing their usefulness. For 7075-T651 aluminum alloy, the best methods were: the effective K sub R curve; the critical crack-tip opening displacement (CTOD) criterion using a finite element analysis; and the K sub R curve with the Dugdale model. For the 2024-T351 aluminum alloy, the best methods included: the two-parameter fracture criterion (TPFC); the CTOD parameter using finite element analysis; the K-curve with the Dugdale model; the deformation plasticity failure assessment diagram (DPFAD); and the effective K sub R curve with a limit load condition. For 304 stainless steel, the best methods were the limit load analysis; the CTOD criterion using finite-element analysis TPFC and DPFAD. Some sample experimental results are given in an appendix.

Beschreibung: As a result of significant differences in the published results for various methods of analysis involving the use of finite element techniques, there are now some questions regarding the adequacy of these methods to predict accurately the vibratory characteristics of highly twisted cantilever plates. In an attempt to help in a resolution of the arising problems, a joint government/industry/university research effort was initiated. The primary objective of the present paper is to summarize the theoretical methods used in the study and show samples of the obtained results. The study provided 19 sets of theoretical results which are derived from beam theory, shell theory, and finite element methods.

Beschreibung: A theory is derived for the determination of the masses, radii, and orbital elements of the Pluto/Charon, or similar, system based on the prediction of an image distribution over space and time and its comparison with observation. The comparison may be ultimately through the theory of least squares or the application of a matched filter to the observations as a three-dimensional signal stream at an initial or intermediate state. The theory is an approximation correct to fifth order in the diameters of celestial bodies. The theory of astronomical seeing that is used is based on Kolmogorov turbulence in the long-exposure limit. The images must be photometric. Linear tracking errors that can be removed are preferable to either automatic or manual guiding, in the collection of candidate observations.

The search resulted in 269 sources, two of which are the galaxies NGC 1068 and M82. The remaining 267 sources are identified with, or have infrared color indices consistent with late-type stars some of which show evidence of circumstellar dust shells. Seven sources are previously uncataloged stars. K and M stars without circumstellar dust shells, M stars with circumstellar dust shells, and carbon stars occupy well-defined regions of infrared color-color diagrams.

Beschreibung: The infrared emission from the quasar 3C48 has a luminosity L approximately 5 x 10 to the 12th power solar luminosity and dominates the power output of the quasar system. It is shown that the infrared emission, unlike that of most radio loud quasars, is most likely not an extension of the radio emission of the quasar. It is argued that the infrared emission in 3C48 is probably thermal radiation arising in a highly luminous galaxy surrounding the quasar.

Beschreibung: The International Cometary Explorer (ICE) is to investigate the magnetic and electric fields, plasmas, and particles in the Comet Giacobini-Zinner (G-Z) and to study its interaction with solar wind. The ICE can pass through the comet only once and it will take 90 minutes to cross from one side of the tail to the other. Since the Comet G-Z often changes its orbit due to nongravitational forces changing its direction and velocity, ICE's position needs to be adjusted. The probe is aimed 10,000 km from the nucleus in order to be provided the best passage through the Comet G-Z. The 64-meter dishes of JPL's Deep-Space Network (DSN) will receive data transmitted on two adjacent S-band frequencies at the rate of 1024 bits per second. Also NASA has arranged for the radio telescope at Arecibo to record the transmission. The Japanese 64-meter tracking antenna at Usada, equipped with an ultrasensitive receiver for one ICE frequency, will provide pre-encounter and post-encounter tracking. The ICE data may provide information about the dust tail in the Comet G-Z which could be compared to previous research.

Beschreibung: Engineering data management, incorporating concepts of optimization with data representation, is receiving increasing attention as the amount and complexity of information necessary for performing engineering operations increases and the need to coordinate its representation and use increases. Research in this area promises advantages for a wide variety of engineering applications, particularly those which seek to use data in innovative ways in the engineering process. This paper presents a framework for a comprehensive, relational database management system that combines a knowledge base of design constraints with a database of engineering data items in order to achieve a 'generative database' - one which automatically generates new engineering design data according to the design constraints stored in the knowledge base. The representation requires a database that is able to store all of the data normally associated with engineering design and to accurately represent the interactions between constraints and the stored data while guaranteeing its integrity. The representation also requires a knowledge base that is able to store all the constraints imposed upon the engineering design process.

Beschreibung: Two families of symmetric periodic orbits of the planar, general, three-body problem are presented. The masses of the three bodies include ratios equal to the sun-Jupiter-Saturn system and the periods of the orbits of Jupiter and Saturn are in a 2:5 resonance. The (linear) stability of the orbits are studied in relation to eccentricity and mass variations. The generation of the two families of periodic orbits follows a systematic approach and employs (numerical) continuation from periodic orbits of the first and second kind in the circular restricted problem to the elliptic restricted problem and from the circular and elliptic problems to the general problem through bifurcation phenomena relating the three dynamical systems. The approach also provides insight into the evolutionary process of periodic orbits continued from the restricted problems to the general problem.

Beschreibung: Differential VLBI was simultaneously performed on the source pair GC 1342 + 662 and GC 1342 + 663 (4.4-arcminute separation) using S-band on the Goldstone/Madrid baseline. These measurements were acquired on two separate observing sessions: 30 December 1982 and 14 May 1983. The change in separation of GC 1342 + 662 relative to GC 1342 + 663 between the two epochs was 0.03 + or - 0.08 milliarcsecond. The differences of the relative position measurements between epochs of GC 1342 + 662 relative to GC 1342 + 663 were -0.29 + or - 0.05 milliarcsecond in right ascension and 0.14 + or 0.09 milliarcsecond in declination. These measurements demonstrate submilliarcsecond accuracy and repeatability. The discrepancies outside of the formal uncertainties could be attributed to the intrinsic properties of the sources such as structure and to a lesser probability, proper motion. These discrepancies could also be attributed to excursions in UT1-UTC of about four times the quoted BIH uncertainty.

Beschreibung: In April 1984, fourth contact ended the two year long eclipse of Epsilon Aurigae. An astrometric study of the study of the system was carried out by Van de kamp (1978) leading to the conclusion that the orbit is seen very close to edge on. The eclipse was monitored by a number of groups from the ground and from spacecraft such as the IUE. Ultraviolet observations of the system from IUE have thrown new light on the nature of the system that led to the conclusion that the secondary object is probably a cold, dusty accretion disk surrounding a star that is completely hidden inside the disk.

Beschreibung: The solar-analog method is used to determine the absolute calibration of photometry in the J, H, K, L, and M bands to an accuracy of 3 percent, (5 percent at M). This calibration agrees well with the direct calibration obtained by Blackwell et al. (1983); this agreement gives confidence that the calibration is known to an accuracy of 2 percent to 3 percent. The agreement also implies that the behavior of solar type stars is well understood in the infrared and that such stars make reliable standards for calibration of nonstandard photometric bands and for planetary reflectance studies. Both methods indicate that Vega is slightly brighter than indicated by atmospheric models.

Beschreibung: Two new direct calibrations at 10 and 20 microns are presented in which terrestrial flux standards are referred to infrared standard stars. These measurements give both good agreement and higher accuracy when compared with previous direct calibrations. As a result, the absolute calibrations at 10 and 20 microns have now been determined with accuracies of 3 and 8 percent, respectively. A variety of absolute calibrations based on extrapolation of stellar spectra from the visible to 10 microns are reviewed. Current atmospheric models of A-type stars underestimate their fluxes by about 10 percent at 10 microns, whereas models of solar-type stars agree well with the direct calibrations. The calibration at 20 microns can probably be determined to about 5 percent by extrapolation from the more accurate result at 10 microns. The photometric system at 10 and 20 microns is updated to reflect the new absolute calibration, to base its zero point directly on the colors of A0 stars, and to improve the accuracy in the comparison of the standard stars.

Beschreibung: A scheme to clean cometary digital images from offending background-star trails, and this technique has been applied to a pair of deep Kitt Peak 4-m plates of comet P/Encke, taken in October 1980. Simultaneous and subsequent digital spectra have been obtained at Lick Observatory. The non-polluted coma images show a strong asymmetric sunward-oriented fan/jet, and an extended and rounder (mostly gaseous) main coma, out to approximately 100,000 km radius. The stellar-trail point-spread function has a narrow width (sigma approximately 0.6 arcsec), so that spatial resolution better than approximately 300 km is achieved at the comet. The photometric gradient near the nucleus is very steep, strongly suggesting an icy-grain component which evaporates quickly (at radii equal to or less than 500 km) in the sunlight. Further from the nucleus, the profile becomes shallower, bluer, and more gas dominated. The effect of solar radiation pressure on C2, CN, and other molecules is probably responsible for the rounding of the outer, fainter isophotes. The source of the molecules is likely to be larger than the nucleus itself, and a substantial fraction may originate in the jet. The technique described here may also be applicable in surface photometry of galaxies, in cases where the heavy image pollution by foreground stars is present.

Beschreibung: Presented are several methods to study a system of tiles bonded elastically to a finite flexible plate responding to an impulse. First, a one-dimensional (1-D) approximation to the system is constructed using Timoshenko beam theory and transfer matrices. This simulates a strip one tile wide. Modal analysis determines the transient response to an impulse of short duration. Also presented are parametric studies of the effect of bond stiffness and the effect of stiffening from inplane stresses produced by large out-of-plane deflections. A two-dimensional (2-D) model is constructed from the eigenfunctions of the 1-D model in a Galerkin method using pairwise products of the 1-D modes as trial functions. Comparison of the two models establishes a factor applied to peak impulse pressure for results to agree.

New materials testing systems have been installed enabling research to be conducted in multiaxial fatigue and deformation at high temperature, as well as cumulative creep-fatigue damage wherein the relative failure-life levels are widely separated. A key component of the new high-temperature fatigue and structures laboratory is a local, distributed computer system whose hardware and software architecture emphasizes a high degree of configurability, which in turn, enables the researcher to tailor a solution to the problem at hand.

Beschreibung: This study of high-temperature fatigue and creep-fatigue behavior is part of a program to identify the basic features of the effects of temperature, creep, fatigue, and environment on the behavior of a single crystal superalloy, a bulk coating alloy, and a coated alloy system. A system was selected which has had considerable production experience: the Ni-base superalloy, PWA 1480, and the NiCoCrAlY coating, PWA 276. Isothermal behavior was studied first. A series of fatigue and creep fatigue tests of the types commonly designated as pp, cp, pc and cc were conducted. These tests were conducted at various constant total strain ranges. The creep-fatigue cycles employed constant stress dwells at the maximum and/or minimum load. Test results are given.

Beschreibung: Mathematical models based on the finite element method of structural analysis as embodied in the NASTRAN computer code are widely used by the helicopter industry to calculate static internal loads and vibration of airframe structure. The internal loads are routinely used for sizing structural members. The vibration predictions are not yet relied on during design. NASA's Langley Research Center sponsored a program to conduct an application of the finite element method with emphasis on predicting structural vibration. The Army/Boeing CH-47D helicopter was used as the modeling subject. The objective was to engender the needed trust in vibration predictions using these models and establish a body of modeling guides which would enable confident future prediction of airframe vibration as part of the regular design process.

Beschreibung: Between September 1982 and March 1983 I obtained high dispersion spectra of epsilon Aur in selected regions using the Palomar 200-inch coude spectrograph and the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory 48-coude spectrograph. All spectra were taken with the 90-mm ITT image tube and IIa-D emulsion. Radial velocities are listed for the sodium D lines, KI lines, H alpha, and a few other features. While most of the sodium and potassium features are surely circumstellar there is certainly an interstellar component present. In the direction of epsilon Aur interstellar gas is seen mostly with radial velocities between +5 and +10 km s(-1). The sodium D lines and potassium lines show incipient resolution which may involve the interstellar components. The equivalent widths of the sodium and potassium lines are given. For potassium, blending with atmospheric O2 makes the line at lambda 7664 unmeasurable on the dates of these observations. The increase in equivalent widths already noted by Pathasarathy and Lambert is evident. Blending and partial resolution of the circumstellar and interstellar features may account for much of the velocity structure which is only partially discernable at the available resolution.

Beschreibung: After trying astrophotography and radio astronomy it was decided that the best way to do meaningful astronomical research at a small private observatory was by doing photoelectric photometry. Having the observatory located in the back yard of a private residence affors the luxury of observing any time the sky conditions permit. Also modest equipment is all that is needed to do accurate UBV photometry of stars 8th magnitude and brighter. Since beginning in 1980 the Hopkins Phoenix Observatory has published papers on several RS CVn star systems, 31 Cygni, 22 Vul, 18 Tau Per, and has followed the 1982-1984 eclipse of Epsilon Aurigae from its start to the present with over 1000 UBV measurements. In addition the Hopkins Phoenix Observatory has developed several pieces of photometry equipment including the HPO PEPH-101 photometer head and photon counting electronics.

Beschreibung: Three components can be expected to contribute to the emission of epsilon Aurigae. There is a primary F star. There is an opaque disk which occults it, and there is a gas stream which is observed to produce absorption lines. Evidence that the disk is not responsible for the gas stream lines comes both from the radial velocities, which are too small, and from the IR energy distribution out of eclipse, which shows free-free emission that would produce inadequate optical depth in electron scattering. The color temperature of the IR excess can give misleading indications of low temperature material. Free-free emission at 10,000 K between 10 and 20 microns has a color temperature of 350 K. Attempts to mold the system are discussed.

The observations were reduced to absolute flux using the standard stars 109 Vir or xi(2) Ceti. The data confirm that the eclipse is essentially gray over the entire visible spectrum, as others have noted from broadband photometry. High resolution echellograms (450 to 6700 A) made through mid-eclipse and the scans show changes in the equivalent widths of H alpha, Na D, and O I as large as a factor of two.

Beschreibung: Intermediate band blue (4530A), far red (7790A) and H-alpha intermediate and narrow band photoelectric observations of the peculiar, 27 year eclipsing binary, Epsilon Aurigae were made from December 1981 through the present (December 1984). BD +42 1170 served as the primary comparison star because of its angular proximity to the variable star. The analysis of this data along with other available photometry was undertaken to study the characteristics of the low amplitude, semi-regular light variations that appear inside and outside of eclipse. It appears that these short term light variations arise from nonradial pulsations of the luminous f supergiant in the system. Furthermore, the semi-regular light variations found for Epsilon Aurigae are similar to those found for other luminous A-F supergiants. Also, the preliminary results from the analyses of the light variations produced by the eclipse of the F-supergiant by the mysterious cooler component is discussed.

I.A.P.P.P., International Amateur-Professional Photoelectric Photometry, is an organization founded in Fairborn, Ohio by the authors in 1980. Its purpose is to encourage contact between amateur and professional astronomers interested in photoelectric photometry, for their mutual benefit and for the benefit of astronomical research. Aspects dealt with include instrumentation, electronics, computer hardware and software, observing techniques, data reduction, and observing programs. Starting with the June 1980 issue, I.A.P.P.P. has published the quarterly I.A.P.P.P. Communications. The Communications contain articles dealing with all the above aspects of photoelectric photometry, although it does not publish observational results as such. Photoelectric photometry obtained by amateurs is published in the same journals which publish photometry obtained by professionals.

Beschreibung: The Jeffcott model of a turbopump which was modified by adding deadband (clearance) effects along with fluid seal forces are currently understood. Equations of motion for the model were written in polar coordinates, and a constant side force was added to the model to account for the likely misalignment between bearings and seals. The force models and system equations of motion are described as well as limit cycle, and stability analyses. Studies of systems with rotor imbalance and with or without side effects were studied for three types of motion. Results show that: (1) deadband does not affect stability-in-the-large; (2) stability-in-the small is enhanced by deadband and side force; (3) bearings loads are highest for motion with synchronous or nonsynchronous periodic enclosing origin; (4) side force acting in concert with deadband effects may either increase or decrease bearing loads; and (5) bearing loads in a stable pump are determined primarily by rotor imbalance and side forces.

Beschreibung: An elastic analysis to determine fracture gap motions occurring in the osteotomized and plated canine femur was performed using the finite element program NASTRAN. The femur was idealized as a hollow right cylinder, and transverse anisotropy was assumed for the elastic properties of the bone. A 3-D 360 degree model consisting of 224 isoparametric quadrilateral hexahedral and 11 beam elements was created. A range of plate stiffnesses was tested by varying the modulus of elasticity of the plate from 207 GPa to 1 GPA. Moments were applied in the plane of the plate, about the axis of the plate, and in the plane of the screws. Results showed that, for plates of typical geometry and elastic modulus under 10 GPa, the contribution to fracture gap motion occurring due to deformation in the bone was negligible compared to that contribution from deformation in the plate.

Beschreibung: A fuze assembly, which consists of three major parts, nose, collar and sleeve, was designed to survive severe transverse impact giving a maximum base acceleration of 20.000 G. It is shown that hoop failure occurred in the collar after the impact. They also showed that by bonding the collar to the nose, the collar was able to survive the same impact. To find out the effectiveness of the bonding quantitatively, axisymmetric solid elements TRAPAX and TRIAAX were used in modelling the fuze and direct transient analysis was performed. The dynamic stresses in selected elements on the bonded and unbonded collars were compared. The peak hoop stresses in the unbonded collar were found to be up to three times higher than those in the bonded collar. The NASTRAN results explained the observed hoop failure in the unbonded collar. In addition, static and eigenvalue runs were performed as checks on the models prior to the transient runs. The use of the MPCAX cards and the existence and contributors of the calculated first several nearly identical natural frequencies are addressed.

Beschreibung: Achieving accurate preload in threaded fasteners is an important and often critical problem which is encountered in nearly all sectors of government and industry. Conventional tensioning methods which rely on torque carry with them the disadvantage of requiring constant friction in the fastener in order to accurately correlate torque to preload. Since most of the applied torque typically overcomes friction rather than tensioning the fastener, small variations in friction can cause large variations in preload. An instrument called a pulsed phase locked loop interferometer, which was recently developed at NASA Langley, has found widespread use for measurement of stress as well as material properties. When used to measure bolt preload, this system detects changes in the fastener length and sound velocity which are independent of friction. The system is therefore capable of accurately establishing the correct change in bolt tension. This high resolution instrument has been used for precision measurement of preload in critical fasteners for numerous applications such as the space shuttle landing gear and helicopter main rotors.

Beschreibung: The design and evolution is described of a spacecraft Appendage Tie Down Mechanism (ATDM). Particular emphasis is paid to the mechanical aspects of using dry lubricants to increase the efficiency of acme threads and worm gearing. The ATDM consists of five major components. These are a dc torque motor, a worm gear speed reducer, the tension bolt (or T-bolt), nut capture and centering jaws and the capture nut. In addition, there are several minor components such as limit switch assemblies and an antibackdrive mechanism which couples the drive motor to the worm shaft. A development model of the ATDM in various configurations was under test for some time. In its latest version, it has successfully completed thermal vacuum testing, vibration testing, and extended life testing.

However, litte was previously known of their torque, thermal conductance and stiffness properties at conditions anticipated for their use in space. An investigation of these properties are described. It was found that frictional (Coulomb) torque, thermal conductance and stiffness all show marked dependence on the bearing preload, the housing design, the bearing external fit (i.e., free fit or interference) and on the thermal gradient across the races. Optimum bearing performance is achieved only if these properties are well understood. The necessary data to understand these properties are provided.

Beschreibung: The suitability of traction drives for a wide class of aerospace control mechanisms is examined. Potential applications include antenna or solar array drive positioners, robotic joints, control moment gyro (CMG) actuators and propeller pitch change mechanisms. In these and similar applications the zero backlash, high torsional stiffness, low hysteresis and torque ripple characteristics of traction drives are of particular interest, as is the ability to run without liquid lubrication in certain cases. Wear and fatigue considerations for wet and dry operation are examined along with the tribological performance of several promising self lubricating polymers for traction contracts. The speed regulation capabilities of variable ratio traction drives are reviewed. A torsional stiffness analysis described suggests that traction contacts are relatively stiff compared to gears and are significantly stiffer than the other structural elements in the prototype CMG traction drive analyzed. Discussion is also given of an advanced turboprop propeller pitch change mechanism that incorporates a traction drive.

Beschreibung: The design and development of a constant-speed solar array drive system for use in high power communications satellites is described. The relationship between continuity of motion in the solar array drive and spacecraft attitude disturbance is investigated. The selection of the system design based on the design requirements including spacecraft disturbance is discussed. The system comprises two main parts: the drive mechanism including small angle stepper motor and reduction gearing and the control electronics including ministepping drive circuits, such that a very small output step size is achieved. Factors contributing to discontinuities in motion are identified and discussed. Test methods for measurement of very small amplitudes of discontinuity at low rotational rates are described to assist in the testing of similar mechanisms.

Beschreibung: The design of a high precision powered hinge is complicated by the unavoidable presence of parasitic drag torque resulting mainly from friction and transfer of power, signals, and fluids across the hinge. Regardless of the type of drive system selected, it is impossible to completely eliminate all parasitic drag. However, the mechanism described here comes very close to providing a drag free system. All sources of parasitic drag torque are collected on a shaft which is powered by an electric motor independent of the main hinge drive. Under control of a sensor, the electric motor applies a compensating torque equal to that of the parasitic drag torque, allowing the main hinge drive to operate in a practically drag free environment with very high positioning precision.

The central feature of using simple cylindrical handles on one side and a type of prism seating on the other is offered as a practical method of achieving a standardized structural interface without freezing continued development of the latches, either technically or commercially. The main emphasis in docking mechanism concepts is in two directions: (1) a very simple docking mechanism, involving mainly the latch mechanism to achieve a structural link; and (2) a sophisticated Docking Mechanism, where the latch mechanism is designed for nonrigid spacecraft and the achievement of very low dynamic interactions between spacecraft during the docking process.

Beschreibung: Commercial air transport passenger safety and survivability, in the event of an impact-survivable crash, are subjects receiving increased technical focus/study by the aviation community. A B-720 aircraft, highly instrumented, and remotely controlled from the ground by a pilot in a simulated cockpit, was crashed on a specially prepared gravel covered impact site. The aircraft was impacted under controlled conditions in an air-to-ground gear-up mode, at a nominal speed of 150 knots and 4-1/2 deg glide slope. Data from a number of on board, crash worthiness experiments provided valuable information related to structural loads/failure modes, antimisting kerosene fuel, passenger and attendant restraint systems and energy absorbing seats. The development of an energy absorbing (EA) seat accomplished through innovative modification of a typical modern standard commercial aviation transport, three passenger seat is described.

Beschreibung: The hoop/column antenna program is directed toward the development of a cost effective, large area, self deploying reflector antenna system. Large surface area antenna systems are required in future space missions involving improved land communications, Earth resources observation, and the study of intergalactic energy sources. The hoop/column antenna is a concept where a large antenna system can be packaged within the Space Transportation System (Shuttle) payload bay, launched into Earth orbit where it is released either for deployment as an Earth observation or communications antenna, or boosted into deep space as an intergalactic energy probe. Various mechanisms and support structures are described that are required to deploy the hoop, which is used to support the antenna reflective surface, and the column that is used to position the antenna feeds and the reflector. It also describes a proof-of-concept model (15 meters in diameter) that is currently being ground tested to determine the adequacy of the deployment mechanisms.

Beschreibung: Traditionally, the use of brittle materials has been avoided in demanding structural applications because of their unreliability. They have been used however, due to other desirable properties, in nonstructural applications or where the mechanical load is minimal. The most common method utilized today for the design approach of brittle materials is the probabilistic, which takes into consideration the flaw and stress distribution within the brittle material. It does not take into consideration the fracture mechanics effect of strength degradation while aging under a mechanical load. This project will combine the two methods, probabilistic and fracture mechanics, into a more reliable design method for brittle materials.

Beschreibung: Due to the stringent design requirement for aerospace or nuclear structural components, considerable research interests have been generated on the development of constitutive models for representing the inelastic behavior of metals at elevated temperatures. In particular, a class of unified theories (or viscoplastic constitutive models) have been proposed to simulate material responses such as cyclic plasticity, rate sensitivity, creep deformations, strain hardening or softening, etc. This approach differs from the conventional creep and plasticity theory in that both the creep and plastic deformations are treated as unified time-dependent quantities. Although most of viscoplastic models give better material behavior representation, the associated constitutive differential equations have stiff regimes which present numerical difficulties in time-dependent analysis. In this connection, appropriate solution algorithm must be developed for viscoplastic analysis via finite element method.

Geometries investigated include the center cracked panel, the compact tension specimen, and the single cracked ring under tension. A Hybrid Experimental Numerical (HEN) procedure has been used to deduce crack growth rates from experimental displacement measurements which are input into finite element computations. This includes the possibility of handling completely general thermomechanical boundary conditions. To demonstrate the scheme, the results of several benchmark problems are presented.

Beschreibung: It has been firmly established that nonradial pulsation (NRP) probably occurs in nearly all sharp-lined early B stars near the main sequence. A recent breakthrough occurred with the discovery of quasi emission/absorption bumps moving across the line profiles of the rapid rotators zeta Oph and alpha Vir. It was found that an intermediate-1 (1=8) NRP mode is responsible for these features in zeta Oph. Some 20 Be and Bn stars were monitored and convincing evidence for NRP in 13 of them was found. Line profile variations suggestive of NRP in the other 7 were also discovered. A search for line profile variables among moderate rotators has turned up NRP in epsilon and eta Lep, with v sin i's of 140 and 70 km/sec, respectively. It now seems that NRP can be present at all rotational velocities with equal frequency (near 100%! . However, at most 20% of these stars exhibit detectable photometric variations.

Beschreibung: Treatment of accumulated fatigue damage in materials and structures subjected to a history of nonsimple repetitive loadings has received a large amount of attention in recent years. A method used for the treatment of complex loading is known as linear damage rule. It was recognized that, this method could result in unconservative predictions of material and structural behavior. An intense flurry of activity followed in the pursuit of alternative methods of analysis that would predict behavior more accurately. So many methods were introduced that it became necessary periodically to prepare review papers placing all the new methods into perspective. The current integrated view regarding the state of the art as it applies to this effort is discussed. The more recently proposed cumulative damage life prediction methods are reviewed. The double linear damage rule (DLDR), which has evolved over the past 20 years, is reexamined with the intent of improving its accuracy and applicability to engineering problems. Modifications are introduced to the analytical formulation to achieve greater compatibility between the DLDR and the so-called damage curve approach, which is an alternative continuous representation of the DLDR.

Beschreibung: PWA 1480 is a potential candidate material for use in the high-pressure fuel turbine blade of the space shuttle main engine. As an engine material it will be subjected to high-cycle fatigue loading superimposed on a high mean stress due to combined centrifugal and thermal loadings. The present paper describes the results obtained in an ongoing program at the Argonne National Laboratory, sponsored by NASA Lewis, to determine the effects of a high mean stress on the high-cycle fatigue behavior of this material. Straight-gauge high-cycle fatigue specimens, 0.2 inch in diameter and with the specimen axis in the 001 direction, were supplied by NASA Lewis. The nominal room temperature yield and ultimate strength of the material were 146 and 154 ksi, respectively. Each specimen was polished with 1-micron diamond paste prior to testing. However, the surface of each specimen contained many pores, some of which were as large as 50 micron. In the initial tests, specimens were subjected to axial-strain-controlled cycles. However, very little cyclic plasticity was observed.

Beschreibung: The interaction of low-cycle fatigue (LCF) and high-cycle fatigue (HCF) was evaluated at the NASA Lewis Research Center on Haynes 188 alloy at 1400 F. Completely reversed, axial-load, strain-controlled fatigue tests were performed to determine the baseline data for this study. Additional specimens for interaction tests were cycled first at a high strain range for various small portions of expected LCF life followed by a step change to a low strain range to failure in HCF. Failure was defined as complete specimen separation. The resultant lives varied between 10 and 5000 cycles for the low-cycle fatigue tests and between 4500 and 3 million for the high-cycle fatigue tests. For the interaction tests the low-cycle-life portion ranged from 30 and 1000 applied cycles while the high-frequency life ranged from 300 and 300,000 cycles to failure. The step change results showed a significant nonlinear interaction in expected life. Application of a small part of the LCF life drastically decreased the available HCF life as compared with what would have been expected by the classical linear damage rule (LDR).

Beschreibung: The engine blade design optimization program STAEBL (Structural Tailoring of Engine Blades) is available at the NASA Lewis computer facility. The analysis capabilities of this program were extended to typical loading conditions for SSME turbopump blades including thermal and pressure loading. Input files for representative SSME blade designs were developed and sample optimization studies for these blades completed. The structural tailoring program combines a general optimization package and a finite element blade analysis package. The analysis package's capabilities include natural frequency, maximum stress, and forced response computation, and fatigue life and flutter analysis. Optimization is performed using the feasible directions method. The current design is modified by perturbing the design variables so that the design constraints are satisfied while the objective function, such as blade weight, is reduced at the maximum rate. The program's geometric design variables include blade thickness distribution, thickness to chord ratios, and root chord.

Beschreibung: A probabilistic study was initiated to evaluate the precisions of the geometric and material properties tolerances on the structural response of turbopump blades. To complete this study, a number of important probabilistic variables were identified which are conceived to affect the structural response of the blade. In addition, a methodology was developed to statistically quantify the influence of these probabilistic variables in an optimized way. The identified variables include random geometric and material properties perturbations, different loadings and a probabilistic combination of these loadings. Influences of these probabilistic variables are planned to be quantified by evaluating the blade structural response. Studies of the geometric perturbations were conducted for a flat plate geometry as well as for a space shuttle main engine blade geometry using a special purpose code which uses the finite element approach. Analyses indicate that the variances of the perturbations about given mean values have significant influence on the response.

Beschreibung: The solid state spectrometer (SSS) on the Einstein Observatory (HEAO 2) was sensitive in the energy range 0.5 to 4.5 keV to fluxes as low as 4x10 to the 12th power ergs/cu cm/s. Good spectra were obtained for 19 stars, including Algol, 7 RS CVn systems, 2 dMe stars, 2 W UMa binaries, 1 GV single star, and 3 0B supergiants, 2 BV stars and 1 07 binary. This is a very incomplete survey of stellar coronae, but it does include coverage of several late and early types and usually more than 1 sample of the class. The results for these stars suggest two generalizations despite the small numbers: (1) there is a broad variety of X-ray spectra of stellar coronae; and (2) there probably are X-ray spectral types (X-ray coronae of stars of similar other properties have similar temperatures). Evidence indicating that some emission distributions are bimodal is discussed. Finally, some remarks are made concerning the spectra of the early type stars and constraints on the presence of very high temperatures.
