    Description: Site 549 recovered a Lower Cretaceous succession which has been shown to include parts of the Barremian and Albian stages. Forty-four species of Ostracoda are illustrated and their stratigraphic distribution used to recognise three major facies units. An high diversity inner shelf facies earlier in the Barremian gives way to a low diversity, outer shelf facies, higher in the succession. The early Albian appears to indicate a return to an inner shelf fauna. The faunas recovered have been compared to similar faunas elsewhere in N. W. Europe.

    Description: We have obtained a detailed carbon-isotope stratigraphy of the Paleocene sections recovered from Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) Holes 577 and 577A. This 13C record is useful in stratigraphically correlating the two holes and in interpreting the magnetostratigraphic data. Comparison with the published data for Site 527 (Southeast Atlantic Ocean) shows that 13C stratigraphy is also valuable for long-distance correlation.

    Description: The Early Cretaceous series of Site 549 have been analyzed from both an ecological and a chronostratigraphical viewpoint. Lithology and microfaunal assemblages allow the division of these deposits into two parts. The lower part extends from the lower Barremian to the basal upper Barremian and possibly down into the upper Hauterivian. Three foraminiferal associations suggest an orderly evolution from a low-energy, littoral environment, in which continental influences dominated, to progressively more open marine conditions. A dolosparite bed (which has not yet been dated) separates these synrift deposits from lower to basal middle Albian postrift sediments that developed in a pelagic bathyal environment on the middle to nearby lower continental slope.

    Description: Cyst assemblages from Sites 548, 549, and 550 were examined and gave evidence of early Eocene to late Miocene age. These assemblages were compared with other North Atlantic DSDP sites and with onshore sections in Denmark, southern England, Spain, and Italy. Some environmental interpretation is attempted for the Miocene assemblages; pollen, spores, and dinoflagellate cyst species were used to interpret the proximity of the shoreline. Key species are illustrated, along with some forms that are not discussed.

    Description: Distribution of mineral assemblages in sediments of both shelf and continental slope of Vietnam is under consideration. Mineral provinces are recognized and their characteristics are given. Principal regularities of formation of mineral composition in marine sediments (with their supply provinces mainly located in the subequatorial belt) are shown on the basis of multivariate statistics methods (correlation, factor, cluster, regression and discriminant analyses). It is established that influence of climate on formation of the mineral assemblages is noticeable, but not determining.

    Description: Ferromanganese concretions from ten stations in the Barents Sea have been analysed for 24 elements. The deposits occur as discoidal and flat concretions and as coatings, in the latter case on lithified or detrital material or as extensive pavements on the Svalbard shelf. The concretions are compositionally similar to Baltic concretions but differ considerably from deep-ocean nodules, particularly in Cu, Ni and Co contents. Statistical analyses reveal distinct correlations between Mn, Na, Ba, Ni and Cu; the Mn-rich coatings showed enrichment of Mo, Zn and possibly Co in a Mn-phase. The iron phase holds high concretions of P and As. Two iron-rich concretions with high contents of P, Ca, Sr, Y, Yb and La were found east and northeast of Spitsbergen Banken, probably indicating upwelling of nutrient-rich, cold polar water along the Svalbard shelf.

    Description: The collection of ferromanganese nodules at Naturhistoriska Riksmuseet, Stockholm, Sweden has been donated by Pr. Boström, K. and Ingri, J. from the Technical University of Lulea. They have been collected in the Bothnia Gulf, the Baltic Sea anfd the Barents sea from 1976 until 1985. In 1997 it is was put to the care custody of the Laboratory for Isotope Geology (LIG) of NRM. As part of the Access Project at LIG, Curt Boman has gone through the collection and established a database with detailed information about the samples it contains. Ferromanganese nodules typically display a rounded shape and are formed by redox processes at the interface between the seabed sediment and water. In addition to iron and manganese they also contain other metal elements. Nodules chemical composition reflects the substances found in the sediment to which they are associated. Since the nodules grow continuously, they reflect changes in the sedimentary environment chemistry on a yearly basis, which makes them very interesting as environmental archives. The nodules can be found locally in large quantities and due to their metal content they are also economically interesting as a source of raw materials.

    Description: An evaluation is made of the sediment transport pathways which lead to the accumulation of the bottom material in the vicinity of the Alpha Ridge. An estimate is also given of the sources of the material, the factors controlling deposition and, where appropriate, on the accumulation rates. Biogenic material, ice-rafted debris and weathered bedrock by- products make up the majority of the seabed sediment. The relative abundance of each component varies from the Alpha Ridge crest to the trough. Minor amounts of eolian-derived debris were detected in the pack ice and yet lower amounts of inorganic debris were measured in the water column. Ice-rafted pebbles and cobbles were generally rounded and calcerous. Which suggests a source from a coastal region on the adjacent Canadian landmass. The recovery of bedrock in the dredging program verifies the occurrence of outcrops on the south flank of the northern Alpha Ridge crest. The samples recovered are (1) well weathered basalts which have an elemental composition similar to floes sampled in the ice pack and water column, and (2) from fine grained sediment samples recovered from adjacent basins. A local bedrock source of bottom sediments had not hitherto been considered significant.

    Description: Some manganese samples (two crusts and two nodules) dredged around 1,000 m depth on the southern slope of the Tuamotu Archipelago have shown five associations of calcareous nannofossils, which are either included in or printed into the cortex and the nucleus. The location and the age of these associations let us reconstitute the full story of the samples. The growth of the incrustations occurred mainly during two periods: the first one between the middle Eocene and the basal Oligocene, the second one between the upper Pliocene and the Recent.

    Description: In September-October 1982, a joint German-French project to explore the Mazagan (El Jadida) escarpment and plateau was carried out with the French submersible sp 3000 Cyana . The main purpose of CYAMAZ cruise was to observe and sample the steepest part of the escarpment where previous works suggest that the oldest series (since Jurassic) of the infilling of the Central Atlantic Ocean are outcropping. In this paper the authors present the main outline and results of the eighteen dives operated during the CYAMAZ cruise. These results essentially concern the stratigraphy and structure of the sedimentary series outcropping along the Mazagan escarpment. The age of the sedimentary sequence ranges from Late Jurassic-Lower Neocomian until Plio-Pleistocene. Late Jurassic-Early Cretaceous sediments constitute the carbonate platform. They are covered with post platform sediments of differents ages and facies. Observations from the submersible allow us to define two main directions of faulting and fracturation, N 20 degree and N 90 degree.

    Description: Deep Sea Drilling Project Leg 80 investigated the structural evolution and depositional history of the Goban Spur and the adjacent Porcupine Abyssal Plain. From the results of DSDP Leg 48, structural relationships and fossil assemblages indicated that the rifting of the Armorican margin created submarine relief of as much as 2000 m. Seafloor spreading began no later than the early Aptian and was accompanied by rapid crustal subsidence in the form of regional downwarping and tilting. Sites 548 to 551 were consequently placed along a transect across the continent/ocean boundary on the sediment-starved Goban Spur in order to further explore this particular structure.

    Description: One of the most important geologic discoveries of the 1960s was the remarkable uniformity of the basalts produced at mid-ocean ridges. These basalts have a markedly different tholeiitic composition compared to the alkalic basalts from ocean islands. But very little is known about temporal variations in the composition of basalts derived from one or several mantle sources associated with both normal and anomalously shallow sections of the mid-ocean ridges.     Description: SDP Leg 85 was designed to take advantage of a new hydraulic piston corer (HPC) enabling to recover fairly undisturbed samples from the upper 100 to 300 m and thus to carry out high resolution stratigraphic studies. The JOIDES Ocean Paleoenvironment Panel selected five drill sites, two sites (571 and 572) are in the eastern Pacific, and the three others (573, 574, and 575) form a north-south line that lies at approximately 133°W across the equatorial high productivity zone.

    Description: One of the long-standing goals of the Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) has been to study the oceanic paleoenvironment of the western Pacific through deep sea drilling. Leg 86 was planned in the western North Pacific in order to address this problem. The primary objective of Leg 86 was to drill a northsouth transect of four sites across the Kuroshio Current system, from subtropical to subarctic waters. Secondary objectives of Leg 86 included the following: First, to hydraulic piston core the Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary at the Shatsky Rise for midlatitude calcareous biostratigraphic, paleomagnetic, and geochemical studies and Second, to recover a "type" North Pacific red clay section for geochemical, paleomagnetic, and geotechnical studies.

    Description: Ferromanganese coatings have been found on glacial erratics in Lydonia Canyon, off the United States northeastern coast. The coatings, which are about 17 µm thick, consist of an outer manganese-rich layer which covers the top of the erratic, a middle transitional layer, and an internal iron-rich layer that encircles the entire surface of the erratic. Chemical analyses of the coatings, when compared with similar data on abyssal marine ferromanganese deposits, reveal comparable Mn/Fe ratios, higher P and Ti concentrations, and an order of magnitude less of Co, Ni, Cu, and most other metals. A comparison of the Lydonia Canyon coatings with desert varnishes reveals obvious chemical, mineralogical, and morphological differences.

    Description: This report presents the results of chemical analyses of pelagic sediment samples and associated ferromanganese nodules collected at DOMES Site A, located in the equatorial North Pacific. The samples examined in this study were taken from 7.5 cm diameter sub-cores of 66 box cores. The box cores were collected on two cruises of the R/V Oceanographer, cruises RP-23-OC77 and RP-1-OC78. Cores containing two types of sediment lithology were recovered cores containing only Quaternary sediment and those containing early Tertiary sediment overlain by 0.5 to 20 cm of Quaternary sediment. The two sediments of different age can be distinguished by their radiolarian assemblage, color, and mineralogy. The sea floor coverage of nodules tended to be lower in cores which contained Tertiary sediment than in those containing only Quaternary sediment.

    Description: Sediments associated with freshwater ferromanganese concretions in Lake Charlotte, Nova Scotia, contained microscopic precipitates of manganese and iron. These precipitates were dispersed throughout the sediment and were as rich in nickel, cobalt, and copper as deep sea concretions. In addition, the development of the precipitates appeared to be associated with the microbial oxidation of manganese. Results from the deployment of poisoned and unpoisoned dialysis probes or peepers demonstrated that microbial manganese oxidation and nickel binding were closely associated, causing a fivefold enhancement of abiotic processes such as adsorption.
