Description: ISEE-3 measurements indicate that a broad mantle-like boundary layer plasma often exists within the distant geomagnetic tail lobes at all latitudes, directly adjacent to the tail magnetopause. The presence of this boundary layer at large tail distances indicates that plasma from the magnetosheath often crosses the magnetopause locally along much of the length of the tail, and is evidence that the tail is 'open'.

Description: Details of an investigation of a lone plasmoid encountered by the ISEE-3 spacecraft in February 1983 are reported. ISEE-3 was then at 217 earth radii distance, in the magnetosheath, and had entered the magnetotail. Intense energetic particle, plasma and magnetic field fluctuations were detected, indicating a large electron flux moving tailward, a suprathermal proton flux, a jump in electron temperature, and inverse signatures of an increasing magnetic field. Closed magnetic field lines were also detected as were IMF field lines around the plasmoid and open field lines connecting the earth with space. The hot particles in the plasmoid are concluded to have been magnetically confined in a boundary one earth radius thick. An earthward directed beam was also detected and was found to balance the tailward flux. The origin and characteristics of the beam were not discerned.

Description: It is pointed out that the redeployment of ISEE 3 from its continuous monitoring of the solar wind in a large orbit about the upstream Lagrangian point to an extended magnetotail orbit has afforded an opportunity for deep-tail passage of October 1982, and in the radial range from 200 to 220 R(E) during the near-apogee part of the second tail passage in January-February 1983. Attention is given to instrumentation and data sets, spacecraft positions, and observational data.

Description: The MHD energy principle is applied to the stability of a magnetized atmosphere which is bounded below by much denser fluid, as is the solar corona. The two fluids are treated as ideal; the approximation is consistent with the energy principle, and the dynamical conditions that must hold at a fluid-fluid interface are used to show that if vertical displacements of the lower boundary are premitted, then the lower atmosphere must be perturbed as well. However, displacements which do not perturb the coronal boundary can be properly treated as isolated perturbations of the corona alone.

Notes: The effect of absorbed doses of ionizing radiation up to 2MGy in the presence of air on the melting behavior of high- and low-density polyethylene was analyzed from data obtained by differential scanning calorimetry. Thermal measurements were made during the first melting after irradiation. The first melting temperature of polyethylene irradiated in air decreased with increasing absorbed dose. Above approximately 0.6 MGy bimodal endotherms were observed for high-density polyethylene. The heat of fusion remained unchanged after irradiation in air for absorbed doses of less than 2 MGy. Bimodal endotherms were not obtained for low density polyethylene samples irradiated in air. The changes in melting temperature and the appearance of bimodal endotherms are related to the radiation chemistry of polyethylene in the presence of oxygen.

Notes: The effect of ionizing radiation on the melting behavior of high-density and low-density polyethylene was examined with data obtained by differential scanning calorimetry. Melting temperatures and fusion endotherms were obtained after absorbed doses of gamma radiation up to 3 MGy. The changes in melting temperatures and heat of fusion for the first and second meltings are related to the radiation chemistry of polyethylene. The changes in the first melting temperature are caused by radiation-induced links that decrease the melt entropy and increase the flod surface free-energy-per-unit area of chain-folded polyethylene crystals. These effects are dependent on the lamellar thickness distribution and on the types of links formed (intramolecular or intermolecular). The changes in melting temperature and heat of fusion obtained in the second melting are related to the inhibition of crystallization caused by the presence of radiation-induced links.

Notes: A chemiluminescence multi-sample apparatus and method are described for determining polymer stability by measuring the intensity of the light emitted during thermal oxidation. Depending on the nature of a material analyzed the experiments are performed either under O2 atmosphere at a constant temperature or under N2 atmosphere at a constant heating rate. In the former case applicable to polypropylene (PP) and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymers (ABS), parameters such as induction time and oxidation rate can be evaluated. In the latter case applicable to nylon and polyethylene terephthalate (PET), the extent of oxidation in a certain temperature region can be evaluated by measuring the area under the intensity of light - temperature curve. Along with providing a great deal of knowledge on thermal oxidative stability, the chemiluminescence approach gives the additional information concerning polymer quality. The appearance of the low-temperature pulses on the chemiluminescence curve observed before the onset of autocatalytic oxidation is associated with the history and processing of the sample and with the natural aging of the polymer.

Notes: Quantum-Chemical Calculations on Allyl-Type Radicals: Cycloalkenyl- and Cycloalk-1-enylmethyl RadicalsThe ability of the MINDO/3-HE-method for predicting various molecular properties was tested for cycloalkenyl- (1 to 4), cycloalk-1-enylmethyl-(5 to 8), and for the resonance-stabilized cyclic radicals (9 to 12). Close by it was established that the calculated heats of formation are largely correct. The electronic distribution in the allylic part of 1 to 12 is evidently too levelled.Based on the defination of allyl resonance energy (ARE - SZWARC (1948)) a mean value for the ARE of 1 to 8 is derived to 55 ± 12 kJ · mol-1.

Description: Lindzen's (1967) parameterization for the drag and eddy diffusion produced by breaking internal gravity waves in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere is applied to a modified version of the beta-plane channel model of Holton (1982) in which an isotropic source spectrum of waves is specified similar to that given in 1982 by Matsuno (1982). The transmission for each wave component is influenced by Newtonian cooling and by eddy diffusion induced by the breaking of other wave components. In general the waves with smallest Doppler-shifted phase speeds break first and produce sufficient eddy diffusion to significantly raise the breaking heights for the higher speed components. Thus, the wave drag and diffusion is spread through a deep layer and the resulting mean wind profiles for both summer and winter solstice conditions are more realistic than those computed previously by Holton.

Notes: Wide-line NMR has been used in an investigation of noncrystalline (amorphous) regions in oriented semicrystalline polymers. Nylon 6 was chosen as a model material. The tie-chain length distribution function, the fraction of tie chains in the total number of chains in the crystallite cross section, and the relative number of taut tie chains have been determined. The data on the tie-chain length distribution are used in discussing specific features of vitrification of the amorphous regions in oriented polymers and in prediction macroscopic mechanical properties.
