In:  Supplement to: Noakes, T D; Longton, R E (1988): 2.4 Pathways of water movement in relation to structure and micromorphology in Antarctic Mosses. Polarforschung, 58(2/3), 125-138, hdl:10013/epic.29608.d001
    Publication Date: 2023-07-10
Description: Experimental observations on pathways of water movement are discussed in relation to anatomical and micromorphological features of five moss species from Signy Island, South Orkney Islands. Significant internal uptake of water was recorded only in the mesic species Polytrichum alpinum (internal=〉60% of total) and Bartramia patens (internal=c.30% of total), in experiments in which uptake by cut shoots was compared in individuals with the external pathway blocked, and others with both external and internal pathways open. Internal uptake maintained shoot water content close to full turgor in P. alpinun and at 30% of full tugor in B. patens, whereas water content fell to 12-15% dry wt. in the lithophytes Andreaea gainii and Schistidium antarctici and in the mesic/hydric species Drepanocladus uncinatus, with the external pathway blocked. Where both pathways were open water uptake from below maintained water content at or above full turgor in shoots of all five species. External water uptake by capillarity occurred most rapidly in the lithophytes, and was slower in initially air-dry than in hydrated shoots of the other species. The spreading limbs of leaves in B. patens and P. alpinum are water-repellent, as are the bright green leaves in the apical 1-2 mm of dry shoots of the lithophytes. A central strand of hydroids is well-developed only in B. patens and P. alpinum. These two species have deposits of surface wax on parts of the leaves, and surface wax also occurs on the green apical leaves in some specimens of S. antarcticum and other lithophytes from Signy Island.

In:  Supplement to: Meyer, M A; Huang, G-H; Morris, G J; Friedmann, E Imre (1988): 2.2 The effect of low temperatures on Antarctic endolithic green algae. Polarforschung, 58(2/3), 113-119, hdl:10013/epic.29606.d001
    Publication Date: 2023-07-10
Description: Laboratory experiments show that undercooling to about -5°C occurs in colonized Beacon sandstones of the Ross Desert, Antarctica. High-frequency temperature oscillations between 5°C and -5°C or -10°C (which occur in nature on the rock surface) did not damage Hemichloris antarctica. In a cryomicroscope, H. antarctica appeared to be undamaged after slow or rapid cooling to -50°C. l4CO2 incorporation after freezing to -20°C was unaffected in H. antarctica or in Trebouxia sp. but slightly depressed in Stichococcus sp. (isolated from a less extreme Antarctic habitat). These results suggest that the freezing regime in the Antarctic desert is not injurious to endolithic algae. It is likely that the freezing-point depression inside the rock makes available liquid water for metabolic activity at subzero temperatures. Freezing may occur more frequently on the rock surface and contribute to the abiotic nature of the surface.

Description: The lipids and kerogens of 15 sediment samples from Site 547 (ranging from Pleistocene to Early Jurassic/Triassic) and 4 from Site 545 (Cretaceous) have been analyzed. A strong terrestrial contribution of organic matter was found, and significant autochthonous inputs were also present, especially at Site 545. Both strongly reduced and highly oxidized sediments have been found in the Cenozoic and Jurassic samples of Site 547. On the contrary, all the Cretaceous sections of Sites 547 and 545 are anoxic. Sediments from anoxic paleoenvironments are immature and have a high content of sterenes, diasterenes, steradienes, hopenes, and ßß hopanes. Samples from oxic paleoenvironments are mainly mature and their content of hopenes and steriod structures is below the detection level. Nevertheless, their hopane distributions have the immature ßß homologs as the predominant molecular markers. For Site 545 the most abundant molecular markers are ring A monoaromatic steranes, and their presence is attributed to microbial and chemical transformations during early diagenesis.

    Publication Date: 2023-08-28
Description: Manganese nodules occurring within marine sediments of presumably Upper Miocene-Lower Pliocene age from cores obtained by the Argentine oceanographic vessel ARA Islas Orcadas in 1977 on the Malvinas (Falkland) Plateau and neighbouring Scotia Sea were studied with the aim of comparing them with other fossil nodules found on the mainland of Argentina that were also ascribed to the marine environment. After optical mineralogical, chemical, X-ray and trace element analysis, the studied "nodules" proved to be actually wacke clasts cemented by manganese oxides with a high Fe/Mn ratio corresponding to a continental environment. The studied "nodules" thus differ from the Argentine mainland nodules and are supposed to have been transported from continental environments and then deposited in the marine realms. The wacke clasts became then nuclei for the deposition of the marine manganese oxides of the coatings. The proportion of trace elements, which is high, suggests the growth of the nodules in the marine environment.

Description: Morphological, mineralogical and chemical analysis are reported for a metalliferous encrustation from a seamount in the Gulf of Guinea, South Atlantic. The results are compared with published data on encrustation from similar environments. The morphology and mineralogy indicate a crust formed on the exposed rock surface with some agglutination of foram debris. Comparison of the abundance patterns for transition elements with that of known data suggests that some enrichment had resulted from the high primary productivity at this site.

Description: Mesozoic benthic foraminifers, recovered from five single-bit holes drilled in the southern Gulf of Mexico on Deep Sea Drilling Project Leg 77 are rare, poorly preserved, and scattered throughout the dominantly redeposited sediments. The Mesozoic sequence at basin Sites 535 and 540 consists largely of laminated limestone with smaller amounts of skeletal limestone and pure pelagic limestone, whereas the Mesozoic sediments at basement Sites 536, 537, and 538 (Hole 538A) consist largely of oolitic-oncolitic limestone.

Description: The technique of accelerator mass spectrometry (A.H.S.) has opened up a number of new potential geochronological applications of long lived cosmogenic nuclei- However the absence of any obvious stage leading to equilibrium between the radioactive and corresponding stable isotope(s) in the geochemical cycle of many of these species, complicates considerably their potential dating applications. The radioisotope 10Be (half-life 1.5 My) is formed by spallation reactions between cosmic rays and 14N, 16O in the atmosphere. It is transferred to the oceans in soluble form by precipitation and dry deposition. The 10Be et 16Al having similar chemical behaviours and being influenced by the same geophysical and geochemical phenomena before being incorporated into the marine sediments, their ratio is tested in order to date those sediments. This approach is also applied to manganese nodules and ferromanganese crusts.

Description: The main objective of the cruise was to study the sediments and sedimentary processes in an area known as Great Meteor East (GME) - part of a feasibility study into the ocean disposal of high-level radioactive waste commissioned by the Department of the Environment. Previous cruises (Discovery 118, 126, 134 and Farnella 3/81) had done much of the ground work, consequently the area was already well known but not necessarily well understood for the purposes of our investigation.

Description: The drilling plan for Leg 74 of the Deep Sea Drilling Project was designed to address three main scientific topics: (1) the history of the deep-water circulation in the southeastern Atlantic, (2) the nature and geologic evolution of the Walvis Ridge, and (3) the biostratigraphy and magnetic stratigraphy of this region. In order to study these subjects, a suite of five sites was drilled on the Walvis Ridge that extended from its crest (near 1000 m water depth) down its northwest flank into the Angola Basin to a depth of 4400 m.

Description: Leg 73 was the middle of five legs on South Atlantic paleoenvironments planned by the JOIDES Ocean Paleoenvironment (OP) Panel during the years from 1975 to 1980. The idea of drilling a transect of holes across the 30°S parallel was entertained soon after the drilling on Leg 3, during the first phase of the Deep Sea Drilling Project (1968/69), when the surprising discovery was made that the middle Miocene sediments of the South Atlantic were largely marls and red clays. The deposition of the red clays was obviously related to the intense dissolution of calcite during the middle Miocene, when the calcite-compensation level was elevated. The objectives and tactical planning for a transect across the east flank of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge just north of 30°S were outlined by the OP Panel more fully to the Planning Committee in July of 1978. After a piston core containing Paleocene sediments was taken in 1979 at the site in the Cape Basin at the foot of the Walvis Ridge this area was designated for DSDP Leg 73 and 74.

Description: Site 530 is located in the southeastern corner of the Angola Basin, about 20 km north of the Walvis Escarpment, near the eastern end of the easternmost (or Frio) segment of the Walvis Ridge. It lies on the abyssal floor of the Angola Basin and exhibits a seismic stratigraphic sequence typical for the entire deep part of the basin. It was selected because it appears to have the oldest strata in the region preserved in a sediment pond between low basement rises.

Description: The drilling of Leg 77 is part of an overall program by the JOIDES Passive Margin Panel to study the evolution of the western North Atlantic passive margin. The history of the central North Atlantic is probably the best known of all ocean basins, but the origin and history of the neighboring Gulf of Mexico are very much uncertain. Some geologists consider it the oldest ocean basin still in existence (Paleozoic), but others doubt the existence of "true" oceanic crust under the central Gulf. The nature and origin of the transitional crust and the overlying Mesozoic sedimentary sequences in the southeastern Gulf, therefore, was the main objective of Leg 77.

Description: Analyses of the bulk oxidation state of marine manganese nodules indicates that more than 98% of the Mn in deep ocean nodules is present as Mn(IV). The samples were collected from three quite different areas: the hemipelagic environment of the Guatemala Basin, the pelagic area of the North Pacific, and seamounts in the central Pacific. Results of the study suggest that todorokite in marine nodules is fully oxidized and has the following stoichiometry: (K, Na, Ca, Ba)0.33 (Mg, Cu, Ni)0.76 Mn5 O22 (H2O)3.2.

    Publication Date: 2023-08-28
Description: The major and minor element composition of ferromanganese nodules from DOMES Site A has been determined by X-ray fluorescence methods. Three phases appear to control the bulk compositions: Mn and Fe oxyhydroxides and aluminosilicates. Relatively wide compositional variations are evident throughout the area. Nodules with high Mn/Fe ratios, high Cu, Mg, Mo, Ni and Zn concentrations and high todorokite/-MnO2 ratios have gritty surface textures and are confined to an east-west trending depression with thin Quaternary sediment cover. Nodules with low Mn/Fe ratios, high concentrations of As, Ca, Ce, Co, La, P, Sr, Ti, V, Y and Zr and low todorokite/-MnO2 ratios have smooth surfaces and are confined to shallower areas with relatively thick Quaternary sediment to the north and south of the depression. All nodules in the area have compositions which are influenced by diagenesis, but those with the most marked diagenetic signature (high Mn/Fe and Cu/Ni ratios, low Ce/La ratios and more todorokite) are found in areas of very slow or non-existent sedimentation; many of these nodules are actually in contact with outcropping Tertiary sediment. This paradox may be resolved by postulating, by analogy with some shallow-water occurrences, that the nodules accrete from bottom waters which have enhanced particulate and dissolved metal contents derived from diagenetic reaction in areas remote from the site of nodule formation. The metals are supplied in a bottom flow (probably Antarctic Bottom Water) which also erodes, or prevents modern sedimentation in, the depression. Nodules on the flanks of the depression are not evidently affected by this flow and derive at least pan of their constituent metals from diagenetic reaction in the underlying Quaternary sediment. Apparently, abyssal diagenetic nodules can have an immediate and a remote diagenetic metal source. Metal fluxes derived from pore water dissolved metal gradients may not be relevant to particular accreting nodules if a significant fraction of their metals is derived from outside the area in which they form.

    Publication Date: 2023-08-28
Description: Pelagic sediment recovered at DOMES Site A in the equatorial North Pacific (151°W, 9° 15?N) consists of a surface homogeneous layer, approximately 10 cm thick, overlying a strongly mottled layer that is lighter in color. The radiolarian composition of both units is Quaternary. In areas where this sediment was only a few centimeters thick, the underlying sediment was early Tertiary. Clay mineralogy and major oxide composition of the two Quaternary sediments are uniform. Their similarity to continental shale suggests that the sediment has a terrigenous source. Clay mineralogy and major oxide composition of the Tertiary sediment also are uniform, although they differ markedly from the Quarternary sediment. In contrast to the major oxides, concentrations of Mn, Co, Cu, and Ni soluble in hydroxylamine hydrochloride-acetic acid are strongly different in the surface and subsurface Quaternary sediment. Mn and Ni exhibit pronounced depletions in the subsurface sediment, Ni slightly more than Mn. Cu is also depleted in the subsurface sediment, but less than Mn. It is also depleted in the subsurface Tertiary sediment, whereas the Mn concentration remains high. Concentration of Co relative to Mn increases into the subsurface Quaternary sediment to a constant Co:Mn ratio of 3 %. The trivalent REE (the REE exclusive of Ce) and Fe exhibit little down-core variation. Distribution of elements in these sediments is closely related to their concentration in associated surface ferromanganese nodules. The nodules are of two distinct types: those from the area where the Quaternary sediment is relatively thick have delta-MnO2 as the dominant manganese mineral. The ratios of Ni:Mn, Cu:Mn, and Fe:Mn in these nodules approximate the corresponding ratios of the soluble fraction of surface sediment. Todorokite is the dominant mineral of nodules recovered from areas where the Quaternary sediment is thin. Relatively high Cu/Mn, Ni/Mn, and low Fe/Mn ratios of these nodules mirror differences between the soluble fraction of surface and subsurface Quaternary sediment. These compositional trends of sediment and nodules at DOMES Site A reflect a diagenetic origin for the todorokite nodules and a predominantly hydrogenous origin for the delta-MnO2 nodules.

    Publication Date: 2023-08-28
Description: Measurements of Pb-210 activities, in conjunction with micropaleontological, geotechnical and sedimentological observations, on sediment cores have been used to characterize two distinctive bioturbation regimes on the continental slope and rise east of Newfoundland. On the rise (2600 m), excess Pb-210 is confined to the upper few centimeters of the coarser-grained sediments underlying the axis of the Western Boundary Undercurrent. The geological and geochemical evidence for a low rate of bioturbation in this high bottom current regime is consistent with a reduced population of deeper burrowing macrofauna, particularly the species Maldane sarsi. In contrast, a higher flux of organic-rich, fine-grained particulate material to the middle slope (1500 m water depth), and the comparatively stable sedimentological conditions that prevail in this low bottom current regime, have led to the active colonization of the sediment substrate by bioturbating organisms. Enhanced mixing of middle slope deposits is reflected by comparatively lower shear strengths within the upper 30 cm of the sediment column, and by the reduced variability of the sediment-depth distribution of the most abundant species of foraminifera. Excess Pb-210 has been transported downward from the sediment-water interface to depths greater than 12 cm. Some Pb-210 profiles from the middle slope can be interpreted in terms of a diffusion mixing model for which the biological mixing coefficients are of the order of 0.10-1.0 cm2/yr.Measurements of the two and three dimensional distribution of excess Pb-210 in one middle slope box core indicate that the mixing process in these sediments has a pronounced heterogeneous component on time scales of the same order as the half life of Pb-210 (22.3 yr). Spatial correlations between Pb-210 anomalies and artifacts of bioturbation observed in x-radiographs of the core suggest that Pb-210 maxima observed at depth may be the result of an inclined orientation of burrow structures which have introduced a significant lateral component to the downward transport of surficial sediments.

Description: Pelagic clay and Mn nodules from DOMES sites in the North Pacific and a varved glacial lake deposit from Connecticut were analysed for Os concentration and isotopic composition by isotope-dilution secondary ion mass spectrometry after treatment by NiS fusion or oxalic acid leaching. Bulk pelagic clay from DOMES site C has 187Os/186Os = 6.5 and Os = 0.14 ng/g. Oxalic acid leaches of this same sediment and of Mn nodules from DOMES sites A and C have more radiogenic 187Os/186Os ratios which average 8.3. Bulk glacial Lake Hitchcock sediment has 187Os/186Os = 12.5 and Os = 0.06 ng/g. The total Os flux to North Pacific pelagic clay is 7 to 10 ng Os/cm**2/10**6 y. Lake Hitchcock sediment provides an integrated value for the local crustal 187Os/186Os ratio. The oxalic acid leaches are assumed to attack hydrogenous phases selectively. A simple model in which the only sources of Os to the ocean are continental crust with the isotopic composition of Lake Hitchcock (187Os/186Os = 12.5) and extraterrestrial particles with 187Os/186Os = 1.1 results in a cosmic flux of osmium to the sediment of 4.9 ng Os/cm**2/10**6 y of which 20% is hydrogenous. A model in which the sources of Os to the ocean are continental crust with an 187Os/186Os ratio of 30 (from the model of Palmer and Turekian, 1986), oceanic mantle or crust with 187Os/186Os = 1.04 and extraterrestrial particles with 187Os/186Os = 1.1 results in a cosmic flux of Os to the sediment of 5.7 ng Os/cm**2/10**6 y of which none is hydrogenous. These extraterrestrial Os fluxes correspond to maximum C-1 chondrite accretion rates of between 4.9 × 104 and 5.6 × 104 tonnes/y.

Description: Relationships among Th and Ra isotopes in nodule, sediment and water phases at MANOP Site S establish the most likely source for Th in the nodules, the frequency of nodule turning, and the similarity of micro and macro nodules. Manganese nodules and bottom waters have 230Th/232Th activity ratios considerably higher than other phases at this site suggesting that sea water is the likely source of Th for the nodules. Similar 230Th/232Th activity ratios in nodule tops and bottoms and in certain cases departure from expected 226Ra/230Th activity ratios in nodule tops and bottoms indicate that the nodules rotate every one to ten thousand years. The micro nodules have diffusion coefficients of Ra similar to macro nodule bottoms. I suggest that they may act as a carrier phase for transporting metals through oxic sediments to nodules.

Description: Late Cretaceous and younger sediments dredged from the upper continental slope and canyon walls in the Great Australian Bight Basin between 126° and 136°E broadly confirm the stratigraphy which had been established previously from scattered exploration wells. Late Cretaceous to Early Eocene marine and marginal marine terrigenous sediments are overlain by Middle Eocene and younger pelagic carbonate (fine limestone and calcareous ooze). The samples provide the first evidence of truly marine Maastrichtian sedimentation, with abundant calcareous nannoplankton, on the southern margin of the continent. Other samples of interest include Precambrian sheared granodiorite on the upper slope south of Eyre Terrace, Paleocene phosphatic sediment in 'Eucla' Canyon at 128° 30'E, and terrigenous Early Miocene mudstone at 133° 20' and 134° 50'E. The mudstone is of note as an exception to the uniform pelagic carbonate wackestone and ooze which characterise Middle Eocene and younger sedimentation at all other sites. Fragments of alkali basalt lava of unknown age were recovered in 'Eucla' Canyon. Cores are mostly pelagic calcareous ooze, but those from submarine canyons include terrigenous turbidites.

Description: Ferromanganese micronodules have been found on Georges Bank, off the U.S. northeast coast, distributed throughout the surficial sediments within an area about 125 km long and at least 12 km wide. These coarse, sand-sized concretions have precipitated from metal-rich interstitial waters and contain many of the textural and structural features common to other neritic nodules. Most of the nodules have accreted around detrital grains, and X-ray powder diffraction analyses indicate the presence of geothite and vernadite ( delta -MnO sub(2)) in the ferromanganese layers. Chemical analyses of the micronodules, when compared with similar data on deep-sea manganese nodules, reveal lower Mn/Fe ratios, significantly higher concentrations of V and As, comparable values of Mo, and an order of magnitude less of Co, Ni, Ce and most other, metals.

    Publication Date: 2023-07-24
Description: We analyzed the oxygen and carbon isotopic composition of planktonic and benthic foraminifers picked from 13 late Eocene to late Oligocene samples from DSDP Site 540 (23°49.73'N, 84°22.25'W, 2926 m water depth) from the Gulf of Mexico. An enrichment occurs in 18O of about 0.5 to 0.8 per mil in both benthic foraminifers and surface-dwelling planktonic foraminifers between the latest Eocene and early Oligocene. This early Oligocene maximum is followed by lower 18O values. A 1.2 per mil d13C decrease in both benthic and planktonic foraminiferal data occurs from the late Eocene to the late Oligocene. There is a correspondence of the 13C signal to deep-sea records; however, the amplitude of this change is greater than previously seen in deep-sea cores, possibly as a result of proximity to terrestrial sources of carbon. The covarying isotopic changes in both benthic and planktonic foraminifers suggest global causes, such as ice volume increases and increased terrestrial carbon input to the ocean. However, during the latter part of the record (early-late Oligocene), the increases in the benthic 18O without accompanying increases observed with planktonic foraminifers suggest that changes in only one part of the system occurred; one potential explanation being a decrease in bottom-water temperatures without concomitant changes in the surface waters. The 18O differences between species of planktonic foraminifers and the difference between planktonic and benthic 18O data indicate that diagenesis problems are minimal. These preliminary results are encouraging given that these cores are partially lithified.

In:  Supplement to: Lyle, Mitchell W; Murray, David W; Finney, Bruce P; Dymond, Jack R; Robbins, James M; Brooksforce, Kathryn (1988): The record of Late Pleistocene biogenic sedimentation in the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean. Paleoceanography, 3(1), 39-59, https://doi.org/10.1029/PA003i001p00039
    Publication Date: 2023-08-15
Description: We have generated approx. 300 Kyr records of biogenic opal, calcite, and organic carbon (Corg) for three cores in the eastern and central equatorial Pacific Ocean and have compared the records to determine whether common periods of biogenic sedimentation have occurred throughout the region. We find that Corg has been deposited in common pulses throughout the area, while opal has a much more local pattern of variation. Calcite varies regionally, but the record is shaped by superimposed dissolution and productivity processes. The most intense Corg peak occurs at 18 ka and can have greater than 2 times the Holocene Corg content. Other major Corg peaks occur 150 ka and perhaps at 280 ka. We have compared the Corg record in one of the cores, V19-28, to a model deepwater oxygen record developed from d13C data in the nearby V19-30 to test whether the Corg record has been mostly shaped by degradation or by the rain of organic matter from the euphotic zone. We found no coherence between the two records, implying that the Corg record is primarily a measure of productivity. By comparing the opal, calcite, and Corg records in V19-28, a core which is at or above the lysocline, we found that both increased calcite and opal deposition matches high Corg accumulation. We also found, however, that the calcite and opal records were uncorrelated, so that episodes of high opal deposition do not necessarily accumulate calcite rapidly. We hypothesize that at least two different plankton communities have been dominant in the waters above this site, one rich in opal-secreting plankton and one more dominated by calcite producers. The opal-rich plankton community was dominant during the intervals 10-15 ka and 35-60 ka.

    Publication Date: 2023-07-24
Description: Material from the Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) Site 527 from the Angola Basin, South Atlantic Ocean, has been analyzed to determine whether Upper Cretaceous benthonic foraminiferal taxa are differentially sensitive to calcite dissolution, and, if so, to rank their order of susceptibility. Two regimes of dissolution, established on the basis of the degree of planktonic foraminiferal fragmentation, representing stronger and less prominent dissolution within the section studied, were used as a framework for reference. A total of 60 calcareous and eight agglutinated benthonic foraminiferal taxa were identified at the species or genus level; of these, twenty-three calcareous and five agglutinated taxa were selected for the dissolution study. Relative abundance of each of the various taxa was tested statistically, using t-test, between dissolution regimes to assess the significance of the change induced by increased dissolution. Nuttallides truempyi and Neoeponides sp. intermediate form are interpreted as resistant to dissolution. Pullenia spp., Alabamina sp. a, Anomalina sp. a, Praebulimina sp. fusiform, and Nuttallinella sp. a are susceptible to dissolution. The majority of the taxa (16 in number) are unaffected by dissolution because they show no change between dissolution regimes. Among the agglutinated taxa Gaudryina pyramidata is resistant to dissolution, whereas the remaining four taxa are unaffected by dissolution. At the level of superfamilies, one calcareous superfamily (Discorbacea) is resistant, two (Orbitoidacea and Cassidulinacea) are unaffected, and two (Nodosariacea and Buliminacea) are susceptible to dissolution.

    Publication Date: 2023-07-11
Description: It has been shown that in the Sevastopol Bay during the year primary production and chlorophyll "a" created by picoplankton (0.45-2.5 µm) consisted on the average 20-44% of total production. It was approximately a half of the level for oligotrophic waters of the ocean. Picoplankton of waters studied is represented by eucaryotes, cell diameter of which is, as a rule, about 2-3 µm. Contribution of the finest fraction of phytoplankton (0.43-0.85 µm) to primary production and con¬tent of chlorophyll "a" was insignificant (0-4%).
